I've been reading through handbooks. Question: The book says that if you do a civilian residency after med school, your active duty will be delayed. Will it not be delayed if you did a military residency? I was under the impression that active duty begins following residency.

Also: how is active duty determined? Like, does the military just tell us where to go and practice? Or do we have any choice? Can we choose a particular facility, or is it up to them?

If you match in the military, you will be on active duty for payback, you just won't be paying off you time untill you finish residency. Your residency site is chosen through the match -- similar to the civilian match. After residency you get to tell them where you want to go and then they send you to Fort Sill. Actually, you'll get sent to a place where they need someone in your specialty. Just remember that the good billets will be stocked with higher ups.
