Hi, guys, I already finished my interviews for IM. In the future, I want to do a fellowship in ID. My options are Baylor, UAB, WashU and UTSW. How do you recommend me to do my rank list? Thanks in advance

View Full Version : Which one is best for doing a fellowship in ID? shindaigua 02-06-2004, 10:09 AM Hi, guys, I already finished my interviews for IM. In the future, I want to do a fellowship in ID. Thanks in advance Kalel 02-06-2004, 10:50 AM ID is currently a very noncompetetive fellowship, so you should have no problems getting into a top-notch ID fellowship from any of those residency programs. As far as prestige goes though, I would rank UTSW>Wash U >UAB > Baylor. Many people may disagree with the Wash U and UTSW switch, but my experience in Wash U is based on my interview there which left me with a poor impression with their residents and program itself (poor computer system, O'N call for interns, team or firm system); and the good things that I have heard about UTSW. Baylor does not have a very strong rep in IM. ID4me 02-18-2004, 09:15 PM Kalel is right, ID isn't a very competitive fellowship, aside from a few elite like Mass General and UCSF. ID is, among all specialties, probably the one that requires the firmest foundation in general medicine. So in looking for a good residency, you want to look for a program with both a strong general medicine department and a strong ID department with good exposure to ID patients. That having been said, of the programs you listed, UAB probably fits that bill best - excellent GenMed training, an excellent ID department, and good variety of exposure to patients. WashU has a strong GenMed dept. and strong ID dept. but the variety in ID patients isn't quite there as a resident. UTSW has a strong GenMed, and good variety of cases, but not as strong ID dept. Baylor has the weakest IM and ID depts. of the 3, but a strong variety of ID patient load. |
