Yes. A recent journal article stated that 8% of all Emergency Medicine Residents in the US are DOs.

I know of several DO's who have worked at one of our ED's and currently a DO is head of the other ED and with at least one DO working there with him.

it all depends on where u are in the country. Im in PA and i can tell u that there are a crap load of them in my ED. In fact, the director of emergency medicine was a DO here in the hospital i work at in PA.

just to add to the big picture, one of my LORs are from a DO that I worked with in the ED...

Hopefully it's a good letter as I'll be applying this June to follow in your footsteps.

I believe these responses answer your questions. For further information regarding DO's in EM residencies, go to www.saem.org or www.acoep.org
Furthermore, you can look at all the residencies you are interested in, and click on "residents" and see how many DO's each residency has.
www.emra.org has a page specifically for the demographics of each residency and lists how many DO's accepted a year and in the past 5 years.

I would say at least 1/3 or more of the ER docs in Maine are DO's

If your interested in a specific allopathic EM program and if they accept DOs, go to www.emramatch.org The programs specify how many DOs they have now and have taken in the past five years. Keep in mind though that not every program in the country has filled out the survey.

Definately good information there. However, don't let the fact that a DO hasn't been to a program mean that they won't accept DOs. You should still apply *and push for* a program that you are interested in. But I have a feeling this is quite a few years away for you.

bleydet17,

I know you wanted to know about ED docs being DOs, but I came up with some other numbers for you.

At the Hospital I work at in WV, we have the following:

Emergency DOs 4 out of 21

We also have DOs in these fields as well:
Family Practice 13 DOs
General IM 1 DO
IM Peds 2 DOs
OB/GYN 2 DOs
Opthamology 1 DO
Pediatrics 3 DOs
Pulmonologist 1 DO

Hope this helps you some.
