Hello,
I am a premedical student applying to D.O. schools with the dream of being a FP doctor. A lot of what I read on this forum has to do with the negative side of FP, such as debt and insurance problems. It is not so motivating, but important for me to be aware of. I am wondering if doctors or residents would respond to this thread with the reasons they enjoy FP. I can tell some of you are happy with your choice, so please, inspire us who are still in the "idealism" stage. What do you appreciate about your job?

thanks to any takers!

I am a premed and an NP but can see the good points about being an FP. You get a lot of variety. Patients appreciate seeing the same provider. You can set your own hours. You can choose to perform some minor surgeries, deliver babies, moonlight in EDs, open your own practice, teach, consult, etc. There are a lot of negatives in any area of medicine. just follow what you like.

Variety
Ability to tailor your practice to what you want
Relationships with patients and families
Yes, there are some fellowships
Practice almost anywhere you want
Job security (even with mid-levels, still a great demand)
Salary/Earnings improving for the most part
Three (yes, only three) years residency
I can hold a reasonable conversation with most any specialist (unlike ortho talking to the cards)
For the most part, friendly attitudes (even those who work hard)

I'm starting my last year of residency so the idealism stage is starting to wear off, but I continue to know that I chose the right specialty for me. Take the earnings, hours, residency length and demand into consideration but go where you will be happy. You will soon see too many doctors who made the wrong choice in specialty (for $ or whatever) and are now miserable.
