Hello Everyone!

I was excited to find this site where so many people are going through this process. Currently I am completing my pre-req's for vet school, this has been a long time coming. I have my BA in communications which I completed a year early to go to school to become a veterinary technician. I thought that being a tech would be enough to satisfy me but it has not. Now I only want to become a DVM more than ever. It has been hard for me working as a tech, mainly due to the stigma that is attached to that profession. Does anyone else think that they (techs) are seen negatively? But I would like to change those views, or at least attempt to. I have been working with horses for many years and would love to be in an equine practice. Anyways, I guess thats enough for now. I hope to hear from you guys.

I thought about going to tech school briefly, but decided vet school was a much better way to go. My main reason is that I currently work as a non-registered tech with no RVT on staff and get to do everything a RVT can do. Even is practices that had a RVT on staff we all still did the same stuff. Only difference was she got paid a little more. As far as the over all opinion of Tech's in general, I don't see it as being bad. I don't think that people know enough about the profession. Meaning anyone other than the vet is just a helper. I don't want to start anything, but if people looked at Techs similar to RN's than it could be different. The only time when I feel bad as a tech is when the owners don't understand why I need to restrain an animal and than the animal starts flailing about and than I just look like a big bully. That sucks.

For me being a tech has always been just a stepping stone on my way to vet school. I did not go to school for it either, but agree that I did the exact same stuff as the RVT but for less money. I never considered just being a vet tech, I guess I just prefer the title of DVM to RVT? :) Anyhow, it would also be easier to have a back up to the constant "My ____ is doing ____, or has ___. What is the matter?" questions. :) Good luck.
