Hi, I'm a 4th year at a top 10 med school on the East Coast. Step 1 score 243, mix of honors and high passes on clinical rotations (HP in medicine), couple of publications pre-med school, really no extracurriculars in med school. I'm hoping to match into an academic internal medicine program on the West Coast (at a place like UCLA or Stanford). Would this be a stretch? Should I apply to programs outside of California (I feel VERY strongly about going back to the West Coast)? Thanks for your help. Feel free to let me know I don't have a chance in hell - I'm looking for honest feedback here...

I don't know if your screenname is something subconscious, like your story or your chances.

A classmate of mine transferred from a Caribbean school to the Chicago Medical School, and matched UCLA for medicine.

Edit: On recollection, though, she DID have 3 pubs before med school (including 2nd author in the NEJM), and 3 "in the pipe", and she will get her FACP on completing her residency this year.

You'll have no problem getting into a good program in California. I don't know about Standford but you have a good chance at UCLA

hey, i'm in similar shoes. i'm looking in particular at stanford, ucsf, ucla, ucsd, and harbor-ucla. these are the only programs i know anything about...does anyone, having gone through the process already, know of other programs in cali that they would strongly recommend? e.g. i know nothing about what training is like at any of the kaiser programs...

UCSD and UCLA: I heard they're brutal. Residents at those hospitals just aren't happy

Kaiser programs: The only one I might consider would be Kaiser UCLA. The others aren't all too great if you want to pursue a fellowship.
