I am a future DDS and I am also Sikh. I find it very interesting the amount of respect Indians give MDs over a dentist. ie My uncle asked my what ultimate aim in life was. I told him i wanted to be a successful dentist. He started laughing and said "why would u want to pull out peoples teeth when you can be an MD for the same amount of education"

hey aman (same name as my bro, also from Toronto)

anyways, I dont know what your uncle is smoking...dentistry is gaining a lot of respect, especially within the Indian community (like I care anyways), mostly because people are realizing that doctors are screwing themselves working as slaves for the insurance companies....of course dentistry will never surpass the prestige of medicine due to the homeland, but this is how I would answer your uncles? stupid question:

Why would I want to be an MD, when we have the same education, make the same money, yet I work half as much, dont do a residency and have complete autonomy over my life and practice. That should shut him up!

Sure, you could be an MD...and spend three to five years in residency earning peanuts, spend your entire career at the mercy of managed care, work long & unfriendly hours, and pay out half of your ever-diminishing salary back out in malpractice insurance.

Heck, now that I've made this list, what was I thinking going into dentistry? I should've been a physician! ;) :D

Why do you feel it necessary to compare the 2 professions. Just be happy doing your trade. :)

I once made a thoughtless comment to my dentist friend, " don't you get bored just looking in peoples' mouths all day?".

Before he got a chance to fight back, I realized that at that time, I was in the midst of doing my OB/Gyn residency, so I quickly shut up.

Cosmetic dentistry is not a specialization...

Not an ADA specialty, but dentists can specialize in it, for sure.
