Hello Fellows:
Could anyone advise me? If after doing a yr of FP, not satisfied, now thought of peds or ob, did i just waste a yr doing FP or it could actually towards my new specialty?
Incidentally, does usmle step 3 score matter significantly when i re-apply after internship? or is it still mainly step1 and 2 score, c/ step 3 score only serving to hurt you?
Sincerely
I believe most programs will not count a FP year as a year of thier program, unless its another FP program of course. At best I have heard some IM programs will give you maybe half a year of credit towards their IM program. I am not sure about peds or anything else.

it could count for a prelim year for those requiring it (i.e. anesthesiology, rads).

Hi Leydig,
it has ben a long time since I have posted anything on this forum. I take it that you are not in an fp program right now. This is all hypothetical ,right.
Avery strong step three score will help but a step three score that is much worse than the other two steps may cause concern among some. You would be better off finding something that you like now instead of thinking about changing later. If you are undecided a transitional year may be helpful. They are difficult to snag now, however b/c you are competing with a lot of strong canidates who are using the TY to fulfill the requirements of gas,em, dr and rad onc.
Your main question was did you waste a year so you must be in an intenship now. No clinical experience is wasted time. The question is will you get credit for the year. The ob people probably would not give you anything. Peds nada.
Medicine may give you a few months.
I would think that you can find a position in ob right now, especially if you are a male.
If you are in a program now keep your mouth shut until you are certain as to what you want to do. Begin to research your options. Again, do this quietly.
Work hard while you decide. You want the program to be sad if you decide to leave. Get to work early and know your patients very well etc. Of coure, this is just my .02 cents.

I know of someone who completed FP internship and was given 6 months credit by an ob program. I am in a similar position. I completed an FP internship and now I'm in the process of applying for ob. Hoping to get some credit but I don't look at my internship as "wasted time" regardless.
