NSU-COM 2009
dradams 10-19-2004, 05:41 AM That's awesome. I may be seeing you there next year. We have until Dec. 14 before the deposit is due right? I'm almost positive that is where I will be going also (almost 100% sure).

Yeah we have till DEC. 15 to cough up the $750,... looks like I'm a on a budget for a couple of weeks.
OrthoFixation 10-19-2004, 04:42 PM Hi everyone,
I just got my acceptance by certified mail today! My first interview & acceptance.
I loved Nova and the surroundings when I was there ten days ago. Can't beat the climate. I will accept and cough up the deposit. The only thing that could draw me away is in-state tuition for $22K less per year.
Irregardless, I will move forward to the next stage in this long journey we are all traveling. What a relief :)
Congrats to all 2009ers

Yeah I saw what your were studying monday night....I didn't know you could study gross on a dance floor. :)
again congrats guys on getting in.
be prepared for a lot of hard work but also living in south florida which has some pretty cool perks too.
I am glad you all had a good time visiting campus and its nice to go to a school with so many resources and other health professions as well.

dradams 10-21-2004, 08:19 AM When are we supposed to have our official transcripts in? Not for a while right?
OmedDOC 10-21-2004, 09:06 AM When are we supposed to have our official transcripts in? Not for a while right?
We have a while to go, I spoke to them and they said that even those still attending class next semester have more than enough time to submit their final transcripts so I'm guessing by next summer they are do..
bgworm 10-21-2004, 03:21 PM Plenty of quality studying can be done on the dance floor
Anyway, congrats all for getting in
dradams 10-22-2004, 05:07 AM Ok, thanks for the info.
kaikai128 10-22-2004, 08:06 PM I am not positive, but I am pretty sure that I will be joining you in Ft. Lauderdale next year. I may interview at one more school, but I can't imagine it living up to the location and climate of NSU. :)
HoodyHoo 10-24-2004, 10:29 PM For anyone interested, Next year I will have a room for rent in a two bedroom apartment.
Rent: $600/month
Deposit: $600
Location: Less than one block to Medical school in University Village Complex (6-7 min walk)
You would have your own room in a 1400 sq. ft. split-level townhome. Also has 2.5 baths.
My girlfriend will be living there so I don't care if you are Male or Female.
I will be an M2 next year so I would prefer living with a medical student or any student in health professions atending NSU next year.
And let me just say that housing is very expensive around here and going up every year, so keep that in mind when you guys look for places to live.
dradams 10-25-2004, 06:06 AM Hoody, did you buy the townhome or do you rent? I am married with one child and am starting to look into housing down there.
HoodyHoo 10-25-2004, 09:49 AM Hoody, did you buy the townhome or do you rent? I am married with one child and am starting to look into housing down there.
I just recently bought. It is somewhat difficult to find a place this close (one block) to campus. The campus is pretty much surrounded by rental communities. The community I live in is the one of the only residential communities. There is another place called Rolling Hills that often sell but they are quite expensive.
If you are looking into buying a place, it is as great investment because property has been going up about 15% each year. However, I will tell you that you need to get on the ball, because anytime there is a nice condo available here, people often bid more than the listing price. I offered the list price on two separate places and didn't get a contract for either of them. So, for this last one I offered 2K more than they were asking and finally got a place to live.
If you can afford it, it is pretty much a no-brainer to save money on rent and to have a place that after fours years increases value by 50-75K.
The main residential areas close to school that you can purchase a place are University Village, Rolling Hills, and Arrowhead.
dradams 10-26-2004, 05:36 AM Thanks for the info on locations to buy.
otter1812 10-26-2004, 07:30 AM The market if Ft. Lauderdale is crazy. I'm moving down there in early December so my husband will be able to tranfer, and we've been doing our research and decided to buy a place instead of rent. We had to put in 1000 more then the asking price to get the house we wanted (She had a handful of offers to chose from). It's about 15 minutes from campus, in Pembroke Pines, and is a great area also. I found we could get more for our money if we went a little distance from NSU. Goodluck with your hunt!!

This is true, I've been searching for an apartment to move in for this coming January (renting). And I've noticed that if you just search 10-15 minutes away, the rent goes down about $80-100. But I'll keep searching because it really is a great area around there.

I'm subletting my room for 450/month if you're interested for next semester.

Thanks for the offer HoodyHoo but my girlfriend is also going to be moving in with me so it might be kinda crowded with (4) of us. She's also interested in possibly buying so we're going to keep trying and see where the next couple of months decides to leave us. Thanks again..

That's cool, I would recommend buying over renting to anyone that can afford to do so....good luck with it.
dradams 10-27-2004, 05:07 AM What is the general cost of buying a place if you don't mind me asking? Like a condo, townhouse, or small house.
Thanks.

New condo, adjacent to campus-Rolling Hills, ~1800 SF $325K
~ 5 yr old house, 15 min from campus, 2000 SF $300K
20 yr old house, 20 min from campus, 1500 SF $200K
I've heard deals can be found, just haven't located any yet. 15-20% a year appreciation would be awesome, if I can just find a place suitable with some breathing room for my family of three.
Check out the Sun-Sentinel online, the south Florida newspaper. That is the best cross-section of offerings I have seen.

I bought my 2 bedroom place for 157K and it is less than one block from school. It is a split-level townhome and is actually very nice. So you can find decent prices, even close to school, it's just really hard to.
OmedDOC 10-28-2004, 04:29 PM Did anyone else recieve the proof of residency package from NSU...wow, its intense. If they ask for any more proof I might have to give them a sibling as collateral
OrthoFixation 10-28-2004, 06:38 PM HoodyHoo, I'm glad to hear that deals can be found. Were you looking while living there, or visiting and looking when you found your spot?
OmedDOC, Since I'm a Texan, nobody wants proof
For you people who plan on attending but not sending in your money until the deadline, did you provide any response to the acceptance letter? From strictly reading the letter, no action is necessary. I called admissions, never got a human and left a VM. Unfortunately, they haven't called back in 2-3 days. Maybe I should write a "I coming your way" letter?

Still nothing here. When did you send in your deposit? :)

Its really intense. I filled out mine in Janunary and they have only one person who works on them. She waits till they are all complete to finish the paperwork and do notifications. I was notified of my residency around my orientation week. :)
OmedDOC 10-29-2004, 09:22 AM Still nothing here. When did you send in your deposit? :)
I'm still collecting coins for my deposit so I have not sent it yet. I just recieved the packet yesterday so you'll probably get yours soon.
To the previous post, I am also going to call this week to ask the same question "Is action required if I havent sent my dep. but Im going there", so I will keep you guys updated.
OmedDOC 11-01-2004, 08:01 PM Hey guys, they renovated the COM website. You should check it out, they also came out with the FALL 04 COM OutLook Mag.
Fin-Nor 11-02-2004, 04:23 AM i dont know who designs their sites, but...
they sure as hell can put more money into it and definitely use different colors.
I thought the new one looked a hell of a lot better than it did before.
OmedDOC 11-04-2004, 09:53 AM Hey Guys, I know this has probably been asked around several threads but I guess I want to hear it for myself. For those of you in the transitional year (no school), what are you guys doing? working? studying? taking classes? Also, those of you already in DO school, what would you suggest for the off year? Take biochem, anatomy, phys, do nothing, run for president...??? I'm just asking because I have that feeling that I should be doing something more right now (just working).
What do you guys think???
Thx

I am doing nothing very productive. I am working at a country club as an assistant manage of the golf course and restaurant, fill-in bartend on the weekends, and on my days off at another place. The only medically related anything I am doing is that I shadow @ the ED once a week for 5-10 hours. Personally, I am going to try to brush up on the basic science stuff over the summer...but until then I am just working and saving a bit of $$.
Fin-Nor 11-04-2004, 05:12 PM until aug... do nothing, learn nothing.
trust me.
OrthoFixation 11-04-2004, 05:28 PM I'm working FT & spending 4 hrs/wk in the ER. That's cut back from previous hrs/wk. Saving money too. Must pad the savings account.
You might want to get your tax stuff lined up and ready to fill out quickly after the W-2's go out. That is input for FAFSA and the earlier completed the better.
Enjoy freedom....freedom is a good thing...
Now I am a slave to my books...and not that pricess leia type either....
dradams 11-08-2004, 06:46 AM I have a question for those current NSU-COM students. I know that the campus is wireless but is there some type of firewall or is internet access unrestricted?
Fin-Nor 11-08-2004, 10:25 AM u must setup your wireless card's mac address... until then, you're out of luck
but once you register on the main page your good to go for wireless on campus...
heck a lot of our classmates just hang in the back and webbrose during class...
I am betting they are watching the new star wars trailer or homestar runner!
:)
dradams 11-08-2004, 11:22 AM So there is no firewall? I'm just curious because at my current job web access is highly restricted - I teach at a high school and they block anything that contains certain key words (ie games, aids, sex, etc.). But I imagine it is different there.

are you trying to surf for pr0n?
dradams 11-09-2004, 07:39 AM I guess that didn't come across exactly like I intended. :o
No, just wondering because the web access at my current job is about useless because they block almost anything.
kaikai128 11-09-2004, 05:18 PM To all fellow future NSU Doc Wannabs--What are your plans regarding housing for next year? Buying is definately not an option, I was wondering what others in the same boat are planning to do?
OmedDOC 11-09-2004, 05:45 PM Hey all,,.. I'm back (DSL was down for a couple of days). Thats when I began to think that I really should spend less time on SDN, huh. Anyways, hope all is well everywhere.
To the previous post, I'm moving to Ft. Lauderdale in January. And I'm renting b/c I really dont have the energy to search for a place to buy (that I like). GOOD LUCK with your transition.
I guess that didn't come across exactly like I intended. :o
No, just wondering because the web access at my current job is about useless because they block almost anything.
There really isn't a big firewall as far as i noticed....I watched the starwars trailer from my laptop in class the other day.....

I would have to agree here. You will be lifeless enough once you start med school so enjoy your down time. Study hard when you get here and you'll be just fine.
OrthoFixation 11-13-2004, 08:04 AM bumpola . . .
Boy that weather in FLA sure looks better than the rest of the country :D
Of course, I'm only seeing it online.
well....I am feeling it and let me tell you. Its horrible. There are rotten blue skies. I hate wearing shorts in November. I hate driving in a jeep with the top down. The sun is an evil thing and the beach...don't even get me started on that one. I much rather be where I can't start my car in the snow or I have to go to warm it up and scrape the windshield at least an hour before I drive in the winter. I much rather be where I have to wear multiple layers of clothing and shovel snow.
:D
Well, I think I am going to go outside and lay by the pool now and read physiology. Oh the horror....He He He.
OrthoFixation 11-13-2004, 02:39 PM Robz, don't make me move down there early :D

It is obvious that he is miserable. What a burden he must carry for the cold bound counterparts. He probably never gets to ski or board in winter. One thing is certain, he will have eyestrain from the constant bikini watching. Poor soul.

OmedDOC 11-22-2004, 09:04 AM Hey guys, I just got an interview invite at PCOM. I feel like going just to visit Philly, but my gut is telling me to give up my spot to someone who might go to the school...I know there are other worries, but did any of you guys go to interviews after you decided where to go??

I went almost everywhere cause I wanted to make extra super sure. I did turn down kirksville, dmu, touro, and pikeville for interviews. Mmmmmmmmmmm. Cheesesteak.
oh...and I went and interviewed at penn state and UT-memphis after I got accepted to nsucom.

I just got a PCOM invite today also. I will likely turn it down since I would rather live in Fort Lauderdale for equal tuition bucks. I would rather save my money for a house down payment.
Sharon Lee 11-23-2004, 09:03 AM I went to the PCOM interview after being accepted to NSU, before receiving acceptance from PCOM, I had already decided on NSU though. Their interview day consists on a lot of sitting around and waiting for your name to be called...
To those already attending NSU...when is the best time to start looking for housing, if planning to rent, and what is the best way to find a roommate? Also, are there any one-bedroom apartments that one person could afford with the proposed budget??
Thanx.

I went in the beginning of May and got a lot of options then.
NotShorty 11-24-2004, 11:02 PM Oh man, I can't believe this is the first time I've even read this thread.
Congrats to all! Soon you'll be as happy as the rest of us!
I found my roommate on www.och101.com/nova (I believe that's the right address). Check it out. Tons of info on pretty much all of the housing that a NSU-COM student can commute to/from. I'm a HUGE fan of being walking distance from school in Poinciana Lakes. Once you experience the traffic here, you'll understand why.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, ENJOY YOUR TIME OFF!!! I didn't do anything productive in the 9 months in-between undergrad and med school, and I haven't failed out (yet). Just be ready to WORK WORK WORK!!!
The single biggest piece of advice I can give you is to make every day of medical school into a game. Wynton Marsalis once said "invest yourself in everything you do. There's fun in being serious." And he was 100% right!
I run around and "glad-hand" everyone, everyday. I'm having a blast, and hopefully I'm able to spread some of that enthusiasm.
***for all the guys: I've been here for 15-or-so weeks, and I STILL see a MINIMUM of 3 girls a week that are majorly do-able, whom I've NEVER SEEN BEFORE. No ****. Ask the others.***
Anyway, congrats again. Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Chrishanukwanzukkah, and best of luck to all!

If economically feasible, I'd highly recommend going to every interview that you're invited to. I always regretted not having gone to more schools before choosing my undergrad university, and I'm glad I didn't make the same mistake for med school.
If nothing else, you have a more realistic perspective of the school you decide to attend. Before I came to NSU, I heard a lot of people poo-ing their pants over how "technologically advanced" it is. You want to see a tech advanced school? Go to VCOM. They BLOW US AWAY. However, we have actually graduated students before, so nyah! :thumbdown :p

OmedDOC 11-25-2004, 10:32 AM I just wanted to wish my fellow NSU'ers a Happy Thanksgiving.. I know that this holiday I will definitely be grateful for the great opportunity that I have been given. I know it will be hardder than I even know, but you know what... I cant wait!! :)

Sharon Lee 12-01-2004, 08:23 AM Yeah we have been a little quiet, huh? Well I just thought of a question though...oh, make that two...from the forms available on the COM Orientation Page, there is one for scrubs, if we choose to wear scrubs to class do they have to be royal blue?? I'm in nursing now, and it'd be nice to keep my same scrub wardrobe.
Secondly, the scrub order form is titled "scrub and dissection kit order form," but there's nothing on it about a dissection kit...???
Thanx!!

We're allowed to wear any color scrubs we want. I think those scrubs are the ones that say NSUCOM on them.. but you don't need to buy them. There is a scrubs store in the Sawgrass Mills Mall where you can get them a lot cheaper! :)
NotShorty 12-02-2004, 07:12 AM there is one for scrubs, if we choose to wear scrubs to class do they have to be royal blue??
About the scrubs they'll sell you; I've heard nothing good. My faves are Dickies or Fashion Seal, both available at...oh jeez, I forget the name. It's the uniform store on Broward Blvd. The same one that embroiders our white coats.
The extra cash you'll pay for these brands is WELL worth it. (think comfort). Besides, you're already going several hundred thousand dollars into debt to be a doctor. An added bonus about Fashion Seal is they're reversible, so you can flip them inside out and wear them twice before you have to wash them. You laugh now, but you'll see...doing laundry isn't always an option!
-NS
I bought about 5 pairs of scrubs and I am more than cool with them. I also wash them like once a week and...shhhhh I may wear them more than once as well....(oh the horror).
Find scrubs you like and its like wearing pajamas all day long here.
AUdacious 12-02-2004, 11:54 AM The store you are thinking of is Uniforms of America. You can wear any color scrubs but they are supposed to be solid and match :p The ones from SOMA or SOSA or whoever it is are nice but I would only buy one set since you cant try them on beforehand. About the dissection kit, I am not sure why you didnt get the info. It shouldve been sent with the scrubs - I will see if I can find out for you. I didnt buy a kit. I just waited until I met my group and then we split the cost of two kits and a book and we left them in the lab each week so that no one had to lug them around and both groups could use one stinky book and two stinky kits, which worked out very well. Two more weeks until break!!!! :D

kaikai128 12-03-2004, 12:51 PM All I have to say about medical school starting is BRING IT ON! I am so fed up with my job and my boss who thinks it is okay to cuss me out--that I would do anything to be buried behind a pile of books and stressed out over grades.
I can't wait to see ya'll in the fall...unfortunately, I don't think they are giong to start school early on my account.
OmedDOC 12-06-2004, 04:47 PM Hey guys, are any of you that have already sent in your $750 still getting reminder notices from NSU. I spoke to the Burser's office and they already cashed my check but HPD keeps sending me notices. I have left messages but still no confirmation. Anyone else in the same boat??

I haven't sent in my deposit yet, but have received the reminder (singular) in addition to the acceptance packet which had a couple of coupons and one envelope.
Feel certain that a cleared check constitutes "consideration" and therefore a contract has been offered (their letter), accepted by you (sent $$), and received/agreed to by NSU (cashed check). Don't lose any sleep over lack of verbal confirmation.
I just wanted to say its 80 outside today.
That is all.
kaikai128 12-07-2004, 02:42 PM I sent in my deposit yesterday--it should be well on its way to Florida!! I'm soooo excited. :D
discover 12-07-2004, 04:04 PM Also if your interested you can pay the $750 with credit card. I called them and payed with my credit card. It was easier for me. :)

OmedDOC 12-09-2004, 03:41 PM So I finally get a call back today regarding my acceptance fee (that I sent and they cashed a month ago) to tell me that they haven't received my deposit fee. Hmmm.. weird I told them being that you cashed it a month ago. So she checks and says oohhhhhh,..o.k. I see it, I'll hold your seat now (6 days before deadline). Lesson being, if I wouldnt have called and hassled them I might have not had a seat. If I were you I would call and check!!

They cashed the check you have the seat....its not a prob.
Now...if they never recieved your check or reciept.....now that can be annoying.
I remember calling them to make sure they recieved everything last year.....but its a pain to catch them at their desks.
So there is no firewall? I'm just curious because at my current job web access is highly restricted - I teach at a high school and they block anything that contains certain key words (ie games, aids, sex, etc.). But I imagine it is different there.
Nova is NOT firewalled per se - it is a typical college setup meaning that all the fun ports are blocked (port 21, kazaa, bittorrent, etc). If you're internet savvy, you can proxy or tunnel around certain restrictions. BTW, there is NOT a cybernanny - so you can surf all the pr0n you want.

Sharon Lee 12-10-2004, 09:40 AM :) I posted a roommate listing on www.och101.com/nova for anyone going to NSU next year in need of a roommate.
I'm interested in living in Cedar Keys with one other person. I'm waiting for them to call me back to get on the wait list for apartments that will be available this summer.
If you're interested in a roommate please feel free to PM me, or email me. I'm very easy-going, clean and responsible (when the need be). I also have a Siamese cat that will be moving to FL with me. She is very friendly and clean, too.
Hope to hear from those of you in a similar situation (looking for a roommate)!

Although I am definately planning on the roomie thing, I have no clue about where I would want to live or even what is available in the area--however, I'm allergic to cats and kittens....AahhhhCHoooo. Good luck with the roomie hunt. :)
Sharon Lee 12-15-2004, 10:04 PM Our link was about to fall off the main forum page due to lack of use so I figured I'd make a posting to save us from being on page 2.
Winter is upon us here in Pennsylvania, and I think it is even worse as I think about warm Florida. It is much too cold here for me, but after noon on Friday, I will be a college graduate and I'll be warm as I celebrate completing 4.5 years of college.
Hang in there this winter to all of you from the North, sunny days will be here eventually.

otter1812 12-27-2004, 09:23 PM Hi Chris. I chose NSU mainly because my family lives down here, but the school also impressed me. I grew up in Fort Lauderdale, and honestly, I didn't hear the most favorable things about NSU (not necessarily about the medical school though). It was the last place I ever wanted to go, but obviously my opinion has changed. I got a great feeling from the school and I was impressed with the students I spoke with (including alumni). The school is up to date and I liked the fact that you take some classes with other health profession students. I don't know if the office staff really care about the students or not, but that didn't bother me. I'm used to a big city and I didn't want to go to a small school (this knocked out close to half of the osteopathic medical schools). I feel we will all get the same education, and you need to go where you will be the most comfortable so you can excel on your own. I wish I could be more helpful to you. Goodluck!
tag_do 12-28-2004, 12:34 AM I'm wondering how you guys decided on NSU.
Here's my short list of what NSU offers that I like 1) third and fourth year rotation sites 2) a "real" campus 3) an established first and second year curriculum
I'm with you about not making an educational decision based on climate ... although Indiana has been pretty cold this week.
Fin-Nor 12-28-2004, 10:06 AM ...I grew up in Fort Lauderdale, and honestly, I didn't hear the most favorable things about NSU (not necessarily about the medical school though)...
their undergrad blows.
Sirius Black 12-28-2004, 12:16 PM Hey guys, looks like I'll be joining you in the fall! I'm still waitlisted at my undergrad school, USF, but I think Nova's facilities are much better so I'll probably end up going there (plus it would feel kinda good to turn down an MD school) :meanie:
twiglee16 12-28-2004, 01:10 PM undefinedHello everyone!! My name is Laura and I am now officially a NOVA class of 2009 student. Please look at my profile if you would like to know some introductory material about me. Hello Sharon Lee (she directed me here and in case anyone doesn't know, she's really nice =))!! I too am looking for a roommate for NOVA. Afterall, who can afford $850 / month in medical school just for rent!!!???!!! I personally think we should just build a tent or lean-to village around the school to stay in ;). It would be much more cost effective and also like we were camping out in a large slumber party every night. Although, it might become a problem if we get as many hurricanes next year as this past season. One step at a time though. Anyway, I hope to live in either Nova Gardens or well..damn....I can never remember the name of the place but it has the word sun in it and it is right next to the campus. I have two chihuahuas, as I said, who will be moving with me. They are very sweet and loving (once they get to know you) and they are usually clean (excepting an occassional tissue or paper towel shredding party...I think in protest of being forced to eat dog food while they watch me eat good food). They do however like to bark at srangers when they come over. Anyway, these two places are the nicest I can find and since everything costs the same down there from slums to castles (at least as far as those terms can describe 2 bedroom apartments) I figure why not live a "life of luxury" as these apartments would have you believe your overpriced rent is purchasing you. I normally wouldn't be willing to pay $1000 for a 2 bedroom apartment, but then they go and throw n the word luxury before apartment and I crack like so much fine china hitting their fancy tile floors. I'm so glad I will be going to school with you all, and I hope to talk to some of you soon. Feel free to email or IM or whatever. Later, Laura :p
petstoreboy 12-28-2004, 05:22 PM Hi everyone! I will be joining the Nova class of 2009 in August with all of you. I just sent my deposit today. I'm currently a student at Purdue, and I'll be moving either in May or July.
stitch62679 12-29-2004, 09:21 AM Hi :)
I'll be attending NSU-COM this August and I wanted to say hello before we all meet then. I'm coming from NJ, hopefully I'll move by May, though I'm not sure exactly where yet. Luckily it costs just as much to live in Ft. Lauderdale as it does in New Jersey! If anyone wants to say hi my aol instant messanger is stitch62679, and my yahoo email is stitch62679@yahoo.com . Talk to you soon, Mike
AUdacious 12-29-2004, 09:54 AM Not NOVA, bad monkey bad! It is NSU - kick the habit of calling it Nova before the Dean kicks you ;) . Anyhow, congratulations on your acceptance everyone! I decided on NSU for many reasons - some personal, some academic. Personally, I liked the school and the vibe I got while I was there. The facilities are nice and the campus is safe. I wanted a good sized town b/c my husband and I hate small towns and he had just graduated with his MBA and would be looking for a job so I wanted him to have a lot of options. You can say that climate isnt a determining factor but when you screw up your knee and cold weather literally hurts, you learn quickly to love the sun. Beyond that, I liked how the second year curriculum was set up and the clinical training in the first and second year. I was also excited to learn on Harvey - the heart and respiration sounds simulator. I like that in your second year you take a general pharmacology course but then you take each system and the pharm is incorporated into the system for you so when you are learning about all of the cardiovascular pathology, the pharm is incorporated so that you dont have to integrate it on your own. I also liked that after your first year you can perform a complete physical on your own and during your second year, you learn to draw blood, insert IVs, do a pelvic, do a rectal, etc. You dont just see pictures about how to do these things. We get to actually do these procedures with the guidance of a facilitator so that when we go on rotations, we have already performed several procedures and have had a lot of patient contact. We have simulated patient experiences which are really cool. You go into a room that looks exactly like a physician's office and you actually interact with an actor. First year it is mostly doing physical type stuff where you just drone on from a memorized checklist. Second year, the patients are given a diagnosis and are trained on how to act to simulate the condition. You go in knowing what type of case it will be (endocrine, cardio, etc) but you have to decide what exams you want to do and what questions to ask. You then make your diagnosis and write up a SOAP note. We have done so many of these that I dont practice beforehand anymore - I just go in and do what I think I should. I think that this will be so valuable once we are on rotations b/c we know how to interact with patients and what to do when we have various symptomology. I thought that was really cool. You can also put these skills to use if you go on one of the mission trips that NSU does such as Guatemala, Peru, and maybe Haiti next year. Also, we do small group sessions based on a case in whatever system we are in - these are cool and you really learn to think on your feet and work together. Things I thought were cool but now are sometimes a hassle :D are that you get to shadow a doctor about once every other week. Depending on your doc, you may get to see patients on your own or stand in the corner staring at your watch. Also, you learn how to read EKGs and radiographs which some other schools dont do. In my opinion, the biggest negative about NSU is that we are in class A LOT! Some people like this b/c they learn from someone standing in front of them droning on about a topic but I hate it. When I started, I thought a lot of this extra stuff we "get" to do was cool, and most of it is, but now that we are so pressed for time, it can just be annoying sometimes. An example is a little anesthesiology course we take. Most schools dont offer that so I used to think that it was a bonus lol. Now, I just think that it was a hassle. Doc2b, I would also compare how much time you have to study for step 1 after 2nd year. We have five weeks (two of which you can take a Kaplan course and the school foots half the bill and the rest are for independent study). At some other schools, students take finals and then turn around and take step 1 within a week or two. NSU also offers a scholarship to any DO student that wants to complete a MPH (full tuition and fees). I am doing it and they really work around your schedule to make it so that you can complete it in your four years with no problem. I would see if the other schools offer anything like that if you are interested. Okay, now that I am rambling, I will bring this to a close. If you have anymore questions, feel free to pm me. Overall, I am still happy with my decision to attend NSU. Again, congratulations!
War Eagle,
AUdacious
NSUCOM Class of 2007
Sirius Black 12-29-2004, 10:51 AM Thanks for all the info, AUdacious! There's a lot of stuff about the curriculum that I didn't know - it all sounds interesting. Our tour guide also brought up the fact that you spend a lot of time in lectures, and this is the only thing deterring me from being 100% sure about wanting to go to NSU. Do you get enough time to actually read the textbooks? A better question is, do you even need to read the textbooks or can you just study purely from the lecture notes?
Also, do you think its possible to do really well on the COMLEX step I with the 5 weeks of studying that NSU gives you? And is the USMLE given at the same time as the COMLEX?
Sharon Lee 12-29-2004, 06:33 PM Well twiglee I thought you had a nice long first posting going for you until AUdacious completely showed you up. Thanks AUdacious for all your comtinued help (listen to her, she really helped me make the desicion that is bringing me to NSU).
Anyhow, I just wanted to interrupt with a little plug that I am still looking for a roommate. The sooner the better. Listen to twiglee, she says I'm nice!! Anyhow, if there is anyone new to the site or sitting quietly and just reading the postings, I'm on the roommate hunt, me and my Siamese cat, Min-Lee. She's very friendly but doesn't do well with other animals. I'm easygoing and like to have fun, or do anything that helps to relieve stress. E-mail or PM me.
Also, if you know of anyone going to NSU next fall direct them to our little group.
Almost time for 2005!!

jp2004 12-29-2004, 06:54 PM Hello everyone. I'm glad more and more future nsu students and possible nsu students are posting on this thread. Its great to meet all of you and hopefully by August we can put the face on each name :)
I'm Jackie and will be attending NSU in August. Already sent my deposit about a month ago.
I'm still in the midst of interviews but I feel lazy attending them...does anyone feel the same way. I fell in love with NSU during my interview and the more I know about the school, the more I tend to ignore other schools and excited to pack and head down there (I'm from NY).
Just out of curiosity anybody from NY?
I havent decided where get an apt and still undecided if I want a roommate this year.
Keep in touch.
See you in 2005
Doc 2b 12-29-2004, 11:14 PM AUdacious, how much time in class are you talking, 9-12,2,5 :( ? I'm kind of one of those people that like limited lecture, just enough to figure out what I need to know, and enough time to go learn it on my own. So the card thing is really freaking me out. Also are you from AL, I assume you went to Auburn, or oh wait they are the tigers, right...hahahaha
AUdacious 12-30-2004, 11:16 AM Yes, I went to Auburn - War Damn Eagle! Check out the link below for an idea of what our schedule is. The class is divided in half - Group A and Group B so dont be to alarmed when you see the schedule. If Group A is scheduled but not Group B then Group B is off - and vice versa. First year, I felt like I had plenty of time to study. This year, however, I feel a little pushed for time. I am also completing a MPH and stay pretty active though so I do bring a lot of it on myself. The card thing is something you can work around - the M2s will show you when you get here. Another thing is that our class is large so you can always just sit in the back and study if you dont like a specific professor or whatever. I just study in class if I feel like I am not getting anything from a particular lecture. Five weeks to study for step 1 is pretty good. When I was applying, it was one of the longest time periods I could find. Make sure that the schools dont include finals week as a week of study. We have 5 complete weeks after finals etc. To do well in classes, you generally do not have to read any text. First year, you are literally spoon fed the info. They give you the notes all year so you just have to learn the notes and you are good. First year, I only read my CP book which helps you learn proper technique for exams, I had the Rohens atlas and Netters Atlas for Anatomy, and I looked at the pics in the Radiology book (checked it out from the library - didnt buy it). I would buy a First Aid for Step 1 and read that also. Other than that, I wouldnt buy texts first year. If you need a book, I would buy the Board Review Series books instead of the actual text. Second year, you will buy into a noteservice so you and your classmates will work together so that you get all of the notes. We are working to make it so that you are given the notes 2nd year also since we have mandatory attendance but we are hitting a few road blocks so we will see. Second year, I am using Board Review Series, First Aid for Step 1 and 2, and Step Up for Step 1. I do not really read texts unless I just cant get something - then I go to the library and check it out and read the portion on it and thats that - but I am not really a book person so someone else might say something different. Anyhow, point is you can do well on just the notes but I would supplement with First Aid to make sure you are getting what you need for Boards.

NotShorty 12-30-2004, 02:15 PM When it's all said and done, we are the happiest medical students you can find. Maybe it's due to the climate, maybe it's because we like being surrounded by other health professionals to-be...I don't know, there are many, many positives. I love this place.
If any of you are only coming here because you couldn't get into an allopathic school, or you like complaining but are too apathetic to take any postive action, find another place to go to school. Please. We all do our share of complaining - it's med school, but please don't have the perception that this school is "perfect." No school is.
Sometimes the attendance policy gets on my nerves. Sometimes I just want to wear jeans to class. Little things irritate and frustrate me. C'est la vie.
The thing that never ceases to amaze me about this place is how amazing the people are, especially the students. If you are an amazing person, please don't see this post as an attack. :)
There are a few (and I mean VERY few) of my classmates that suck, and I was hoping to dissuade anyone else that would fit into this category from joining us.
To the rest of you: Welcome, can't wait to meet you!

If it makes you feel better we start at the beginning of July next year..........sucks.
AUdacious 12-31-2004, 11:25 AM Its not the starting in July that blows, it is the going to December that really hurts. BUT they do that so that you can have time to study for Step 1 which is soo important. If you can get thru the burnout blues, the extra study time is appreciated in the end. Besides you start off with Mama and Papa Khin and they are both truly brilliant and really care about the students. It makes it bearable.

jp2004 01-01-2005, 08:48 AM Wow, starting second yr in July? What about research in the summer, does this leave enough time?
im quite interested in research too...do i have some time left to pursue this interest???
also, has anyone been to the medical mission guatemala, peru, etc? how was the experience and how much did you have to pay for the trip?
AUdacious 01-01-2005, 11:13 AM If research is a priority for you then you will make time for it. Many people do research throughout the year. As far as over the summer goes, you cant do a large research project but there are a few projects through the CDC that run just under a month. If you wanted to do research with a professor over the summer, then that is not a problem at all. I did not get to go on the mission trips but I know that they do a lot of fundraising to make it as affordable as possible. I have heard nothing but great things from my friends that went - you will never see pathology like some of that in the US and for many of the patients, that is the only time they see a doctor period. See you soon.

It's hard not to get excited about all the possibilities and you're still absorbing the idea that you'll be a physician one day, but if you don't mind I'd like to share some tips I learned from my experiences....my whole one semester at NSU. Research...Guatamala...sounds great but unless you're an academic allstar it's going to be very difficult to pull all the extra stuff off and do well in your classes.
If you absolutely positively HAVE to pick up a science book between now and the start of class...what I would do knowing what I know now is buy a book called:
Cardiovascular Physiology Concepts
Richard E. Klabunde
Lippincott publishes it....
It's an easy read and it will come in handy once physiology starts..
Just my .02 cents
Welcome to Nova You're going to love it :)
NotShorty 01-04-2005, 11:52 AM If my roommate (currently a senior at NSU undergrad) gets accepted to the class of 2009, our apartment will be available for lease because we're going to pool our $ to buy a condo. Two brief posts about my apt. are pasted below.

My roommate and I just talked about this an hour ago. It's quite preliminary, but I just thought I'd put the word out.

I also reeeally enjoy studying by the pool. Just use earplugs to help get un-distracted. It's getting a bit chilly to do so now, but if the pool's not an option, you can just pull a little table onto your patio. Mine overlooks a pond with a fountain. Not too shabby.

Living walking distance from school is worth its weight in gold...well, I guess that doesn't weigh anything. Hmm, you know what I mean .
I actually like driving around here quite a bit (it's like street racing all the time) but just to not "have to" drive to and from school every day is SUCH a perk. One of my classmates commented that at the end of a long day, the last thing she wants to do is sit in traffic. She actually commuted further than anyone else I know of, but is moving closer to school so she has a little more time to cook for herself. (remember, one of the biggest challenges of med school is time management. despite my protests, there are still just 24 hours in a day ). Not to mention I only fill up my gas tank every 3 weeks at the most.
The pond with a fountain I referred to in my last post was the one on the north end of Poinciana Lakes. For anyone who wanted to live here, the extra $ to face the water is totally worth it because I can't hear the traffic on University Dr, plus it's a totally pimp view.
If you want to live close to school, you could pretty much just spend a weekend driving around and touring complexes (as Robz and I did last year). I'd do so ASAP, since apartments fill up all the time. If a complex you really like is currently full, don't dismay. Tenants vacate all the time - often without much notice.
Hope you guys and gals had a good new year's eve. Mine rocked!

wizzo 01-04-2005, 05:28 PM hello fellow classmates. I think I've posted on here before *this thread anyway* but I wasn't too firm about my attending NSU, but after sending in that first deposit, I think that pretty much cinches the deal for me. I haven't read people's post *going to do that right now* but people can pvt me about looking for roommates and all that happy stuff that comes along with moving. *thank god I only have a few more moves in my life*
Cheers

jp2004 01-09-2005, 01:07 PM It's hard not to get excited about all the possibilities and you're still absorbing the idea that you'll be a physician one day, but if you don't mind I'd like to share some tips I learned from my experiences....my whole one semester at NSU.
Hi there.
Did you participate both at research and the guatemala trip all in one semester? How's the guatemala experience? Did you like it?

wizzo 01-16-2005, 09:44 AM So what is everyone doing for housing? I called the school and they said they aren't going to offer graduate on campus housing, which I guess is for the better...never really liked staying on campus, but it would have been nice not to have to worry about finding a place. Are most people married? families? Second career?
So with all those questions, here's a little about me. I'll be moving from CA, but I've lived all over the place, including England. I was in the Air Force for a few years and then a contractor for the Air Force. I'm 32 years old, single...well, I guess that's about it.

I am trying to figure out what I am going to do for housing as well. I'm moving down to Davie sometime before the summer and I am planning on buying a house or a condo. Wont be down to the area for good until mid-July because of a summer job in New Mexico.
Currently I'm in Gainesville, working for UF as a researcher. I am single, twenty four and have been out of school for the last three years. Whats everyone else doing for the summer? I am planning on working in conservation in northern New Mexico.

Hi kai,
would you mind giving us pointers later on after you have checked out the apts.
I'm also looking for an apt., single 26, from NY and works as a researcher at CU.
Just out of curiosity, are most of looking to share apts or prefer to have their own???
Sharon Lee 01-19-2005, 07:59 AM www.och101.com/nova and www.apartmentguide.com are good sites to go to to check out the apartments close to school and those futher away if you want to drive. Most of the apartment complexes also have their own sites that you can check out with links from those websites.
I'm planning on moving down to school in July sometime to get to know the area a little bit and enjoy some time on the beach before the start of school. I'm looking for a roommate through the och101 site. Just about found someone, just making sure we are compatible now though.
As to summer plans, I graduated college last month so I'm just going to be working as a CNA at a local hospital until it is time to pack up and head South.

Hey Everyone!!
My name is Marina Udowenko and I am going to be a first year at NOVA. I am looking for a someone to share an apartment with. I enjoy volunteer work--I am really excited about the community medicine opportunities abroad as well as being a spanish interpreter in a clinic. I am serious about my work, but I definately like to go out and have fun (dancing, swimming, running races, musicals, art museums). I am currently looking at housing in Cedar Key, but I am definately open to suggestions. I was thinking about coming down to Ft. Lauderdale in February to check out some of the places. Anyone want to join me--US3000 has some great deals for flights! Email me or give me a call at 215-266-3481.
ciao! :)

Sure...I'll let you know what I find. I am going to be most interested just to see what the area is like--I didn't really get a chance to see much of the Ft. Lauderdale area when I was down for my interview.

GregsAnatomy 01-24-2005, 04:14 PM Just some housing advice for you future NSUCOMers.... :p
I HATE dealing with traffic and University Drive is the WORST!!! Taking 30 minutes to go 3 miles is not my idea of fun! It also takes forever to get in to the parking garage from University. So that was a major decision in finding my apartment. If you want to walk to class every day, sure go for Cedar Key or Sunforest. I like to have my car on campus so I can get around for lunch and run errands after school. My apartment complex, Palm Trace Landings, is completely accessible on "back roads" with minimal traffic. Other great complexes by me are the ones on Nova Dr. like Nova Gardens. But I really like Palm Trace because it's brand new, has very nice amenities, and it VERY accessible to both school and 595. On the other side of University Dr., many students choose to live at Pine Island Ridge, which is also very nice.
Commuting from downtown Fort Lauderdale takes about 25-30 minutes, and is a really cool place to live! :o
Just my $.02...good luck with finding a place!!! :D
kaikai128 01-24-2005, 04:14 PM Hey guys, my bro interviewed 2 wks ago at NSU. Do u think if i call them they would tell me whether or not he got in, seeing as that i have been accepted? Adcom met today and he called, they said they wouldn't give that info over the phone.

Well, I live a couple of miles away and my commute takes me 12-15 minutes with the worst area being near 595. I avoid university as much as possible. I drive down pine island under 595 till 30th and take that to the garage. Its quick, simple, and fairly uneventful. Of course you can't move anywhere around 5ish cause the traffic is insane around some places. I jsut study during those times or leave eariler. Today i got out at 3...I went home and was in my apartment by 3:20 on the couch chilling. Its true there are some sucky days but you need to go and check out the apartments for yourself. I know I wasn't impressed with cedar key cause they knew they were walking distance and they knew they would fill the room so their service was take it or leave it to me.
(plus other complexes offered more amenities and at least a free months rent)

You know...its kinda funny. I have met the girl in charge of the interview day a few times. Mainly cause I have done the tours and went to eat the great food they have this year too. MMmmmmmmmm. I don't know if she was as friendly as Dr. Chaffin was to me last year though. He personally told me that he would call me on wednesday to let me know...it was late on wednesday and I called...he told me I got in...I was happy...I went and had a drink. Maybe they changed the way they do somethings or you got one of those people that answer the phone who arn't the most ...ummm....proactive.

Once they have gotten the letters together from the acceptance groups, they will tell you over the phone, but usually not before that. I called the friday after the adcom met (that monday), answered a verification question, and they told me. Just give them a few days to get their computer and paperwork in order. Hope that helps, also I would suggest that he call, not you.

I can't say that it bothers me that much. I have always been the kind of person who feels guilty when I miss classes, so I don't expect the attendance policy to bother me. Regardless, I feel as if I have made an informed decision and taken all the factors into consideration.

MagnumDR 02-01-2005, 03:09 PM I interviewed at NSU 3 weeks ago and am wondering how/when I can expect to be contacted. They said the committee would meet like the 26th of January or somewhere around there, I can't remember. Doc 2B, has your brother heard yet?
Doc 2b 02-01-2005, 03:17 PM No he hasn't magnum. I think that is just poor form, it shows flagerant disregard for a students aprehension. I can understand it takes time to send out the letters, but a week is more than enough and there is no reason they can't email.

You can get cheap gloves at walgreens across the street from school or one of the many around the area. 2 boxes is fine and I bought the more expensive ones that have less in each box. I still had some for looking at brains in neuroanatomy too this semester.

I would if I could. I'm going to the keys this weekend (at the expense of the immuno test on Monday). Its about a 3 hour drive from here. It would take less but the roads are one lane and have a 45 MPH speed limit on them. Its always slow driving there. Its a great place for scuba though!

Welcome to the dark side Doc...LOL sorry, but I just couldn't help myself. The SCUBA is a great idea. I think I can get my cert extra cheap on base before I head down there...I've always been wanting to do that. As far as getting a place to stay, I was thinking about making a trip down there in May time frame to secure a place for the beginning of July. Then I can move myself down there and have close to three weeks of just relaxin' in the sun!
stitch62679 02-13-2005, 10:50 AM I'm hoping to be down there in late May, June the latest. Basically cause class goes on til May 15th here. Otherwise I wouldve transferred my job and moved a while ago!
I started looking at apartments now online, and I'm thinking of headed down there to check out the area again in person this month too, not sure if that's jumping the gun at all though.
OmedDOC 02-13-2005, 10:58 AM I would suggest to begin looking for a place ASAP. I live in Miami right now and I've already begun to look for a place and let me tell you its not that easy. Most places are full right now and will only put you on a wait list. Just a bit of advice because it would suck to be in may/june and not have a place yet. GOOD LUCK..

The guide recommends using that and dropping whatever connection we use now. I have aol now and I would definitely drop it for something free, but I'm assuming that the NSU connection only has access numbers that are local to the school, so I wouldn't switch until I got to school anyhow, right?
Thanx and Happy St. Valentine's Day
NotShorty 02-13-2005, 09:35 PM Maybe you're referring to NSU's campus-wide wifi network? I don't know of any free dial-up service.
You could definitely get by on using the school's computer labs, or going wireless if you have a laptop. You could save cash by not paying for internet connection at home (definitely a viable option), or just having NetZero at home for dial-up, Comcast broadband if you have to have hi speed.
From my experience, AOL doesn't provide anything that you can't get for less money from someone else.

tag_do 02-14-2005, 10:16 AM When are you guys heading down to find a place to live? [...] I'm thinking of going down during March, good time? Or too early?
You can always start apartment shopping online apartmentguide.com and rent.com are pretty good places to start. I made a trip with my future roommate last month down to apt shop and was really glad I had put in the time online before going.
If you want to actually sign a lease when you're down there, try to go sixty days before you want to move in (that's the notice the current renters have to give as to whether they will renew their lease). Good luck.

Yeah, what he said. He is right. ;)
It was very nice to have a good plan forumalted as to where all the apts were, what their price range was, and what order would me most efficient to see them in. I am glad that someone who was long on my trip down took the time to take care of all those details.

Did you guys check out Palm Trace, it looked pretty cool. How far would the drive be with traffic, anyone know?
Coca Cola 02-14-2005, 10:45 PM Palm Trace is worth looking into. I live at these apartments and I have to say they are the nicest apartments for the price (2 bedroom) in Davie. It takes me about 10-15 minutes to get to class. It is about 3 miles. Most importantly you don't have to get on University Dr.

Unless you really want to drive, my advice would be to go with one of the following complexes: Cedar Key, University Village, Poinciana Lakes, Sunforest, or Rolling Hills. All of these you can walk from, which IS EXTREMELY NICE. it's nice being able to walk home and eat lunch or go sleep, and it's nice not getting stuck in traffic on the way home during rush hour. IMO, it's worth paying a little more per month for the proximity.
NotShorty 02-15-2005, 08:58 PM Most of the time, you don't even have to pay "extra" to be in walking distance, but if you do this cost will pay for itself very quickly (save gas $, plus traffic can be a major hassle if you're stuck in it often).
I live at P. Lakes: http://www.gannonintl.com/Poincianalakes.htm
My place may be up for rent next year, but nothing's definite right now. There are about 25 HPD students living here, but that's a really rough estimate. There are different colored scrubs walking around here all the time.

Hola und Willkommen. :D
kaikai128 02-17-2005, 03:46 PM Oh, one thing...that just came up in a conversation with my roomie for next year.
To those who are looking for apartments, find what works for you. I personally like to have a pretty distinct separation from work and my pesonal life as well as enjoy driving as a form of therapy and winding down. We have significantly discussed this and would both dislike greatly the idea of "walking out my back door to class." We are purposly living a few more minutes away from campus in accorance with our personalities.
Find what works best for you.

NotShorty 02-19-2005, 10:50 PM Yaaay! Saturday night and I cleaned my kitchen, now I'm sitting down to a little SDN. Maybe then I'll have a snack and go to bed. Aren't you excited to get to med school so your life can be as exciting as mine! :horns: :hardy:
Just kidding. If you saw my post in the Class of '08 thread, you know that last night more than made up for tonight. :D
  Welcome, welcome! You're (more often than not) gonna love this place. Life starts getting pretty stressful, but also infinitely more interesting and meaningful.
If you haven't already found a place to live, make sure to take a look at www.och101.com/nova/
I don't know what else to tell you...Everyone tried telling me to "enjoy life while I still could" but I was way too ready to leave Ohio far behind and get this show on the road.
If you've got the cash, you could do some travelling. I spent 6 months in Australia, so I could point you to a few "must-see" spots if you want. Just pm me.
Ok, time for that snack, then:

discover 02-22-2005, 09:14 PM Hey
I had a question regarding finding roomates. I'm a guy who's looking to hopefully room with a fellow 1st year med student. I went on the www.och101.com/ site but didnt find much. It doesnt really give you the option of picking "osteopathic medicine/ or medicine" in the field category.
Anyway, if anyone knows of a good way to find a roomate or needs one PM me.
Thanks
kaikai128 02-22-2005, 09:47 PM Look back thru the historic posts in this thread...I know I have seen several ppl broadcast the need for a roomate. I can't help you out; but I know there are several others in your situation. Good luck!
NotShorty 02-22-2005, 10:03 PM If nothing else, once you get your NSU email address, you'll be able to email all your classmates by sending a message to 1 address (that's a ListServe, FYI). I forget how soon that happens, but that's always a good way to find a roomie.
Most def try to contact other SDNners.
NS
fbdo79 02-24-2005, 04:02 PM Another thing you could do, that the class of 2008 did, before schools starts, is for everybody to give out their AIM, Yahoo, or MSN screen names for the different messenger programs. That way you could chat with your future classmates and get to know some of them, and possibly find a roommate that way.

luckestar 02-27-2005, 12:05 AM Hey everyone!
I know everyone has been posting their thoughts and opinions about the best way to go about searching for a place to live and also about some of the apartment complexes, but I noticed as I was trying to take in all of this that I had not seen anyone mention Davie Crossings. When I interviewed several students recommended the apartment complex and I wanted to know what everyone else thought of the property. Maybe some of you who have taken recent trips to scope out apartments could help me out??
Thanks so much!!

OmedDOC 02-27-2005, 08:55 PM Hey ALL, I was just wondering if you guys have already paid the final deposit ($1250) that is due by March 15. I mean, I'm really trying hard to save up the money and I dont want to put it on my CC. Do you guys think an extension is out of the question (probably). But I guess there could be other worries...I just gotta skip happy hour from now till then
Doc 2b 02-27-2005, 09:25 PM I haven't paid it yet. I was planning on putting it on my CC, how do you do that? Can you do it through webstar. I would call the admissions office, but they haven't even gotten back to me for others reasons from two weeks ago, and they never answer the phone! The immunization form says that you have to have a titer for Varicella, do we have to have that if we have had chicken pox?

Hey would you mind telling me when we got the immunization form. I dont remember getting one in my admissions packet. So other than geting the deposits in before the deadline is there anything else we have to do secure our spot.. I'm just worried about missing something, thanks
kaikai128 02-28-2005, 07:42 AM I believe that this form as well as the white coat form, etc are all located in the Orientation section of the NSU website. I have not actually received these forms from the school, but that may come after the second deposit.
AUdacious 02-28-2005, 08:08 AM I remember getting a crapload of info after I paid my complete deposit. The current M1 and M2s always sell their books. You will get emails and fliers when you get here about people selling stuff. As far as books go, I really didnt buy all that many. Even the ones I bought, I usually bought a BRS rather than the actual text BUT I am not a book person. I bought a Rohens, got a free Netters (SOMA), split the cost of a anatomy lab manuel with my group, physio BRS, the CP book, and the CP survival guide (from a club), the biochem guide (from a club) and the histo cd (from a club). The First Aid for Step 1 is good to use in your classes during your first year and the for Step 2 is good to use during your second year. There are always required books but honestly, I didnt touch most of them and did very well, especially first year. For the most part, everything you need to know will be given to you as a handout. Also, all of the required text can be checked out of the library on reserve if you decide you need to read a chapter. I did buy the Foundations of OPP book which is huge and costly and I have used it once for one chapter - some people think all D.O.s should have this book but that is up to you. I also bought a histo atlas b/c it said it was required - I never opened it. My point is that unless you are a book person, dont buy every book listed. Use your money more wisely on review books and books that you will use for the boards so that when you study for the boards, you have already been through the book while you were in that class. Lately, I have also bought the Green Saverese OPP book and BRS Pharm cards to study for the boards - I wish that I had gotten these earlier to use throughout OPP. I did very well in pharm but it was so much so fast so I think the cards will help. A lot of people are also buying the micro cards. When you guys get here, we will have taken Step 1 so a lot of people will probably be selling these as well.
As far as apartments go, I would check out www.apartments.com - put in Davie and then click see all listings or put in the restrictions you want. If you hit, see all listings then SunForest, CedarKey, etc will be at the top. You can also click Search for Apartments in the upper left and then sort by zip code - 33314 (the school) - and then put in a radius. You can pick within 5 miles, 10 miles, or 20 miles. Good luck.

That's the orientation link - you can download all the forms there. According to the checklist, it says that we need to turn in the $1250 deposit along with the Immunization Form, Physical exam form, and transcript form by March 15th.
I paid with a credit card last year. In fact the only reason I own a credit card was to pay for my deposit. I believe I called it in to admissions.
tag_do 03-01-2005, 09:02 AM [...] it says that we need to turn in the $1250 deposit along with the Immunization Form, Physical exam form, and transcript form by March 15th.
I spoke with Delia last week and she said to just make sure the deposit is in by March 15 (that's what changes your status in their system to confirmed class of 09). The rest of the requirements have a more absolute deadline of before orientation. I hope this helps.
stitch62679 03-01-2005, 01:18 PM Hi, does anyone who's been looking at the apartments, or already lives there, see Sunforest or Cedar Key as one being better than the other??? My goal is to really only pass at this point. I mean we can get straigh C's and have a 2.0 last semester and they wont care. Am I wrong to assume this?
Thanks

I don't know, but although in theory this sounds okay to me...I know that by the time the first day of class is over I will be back to my "Must do better" attitude and strive to do the best that I can. There is always giong to be some motivation...In high school it was college scholarships, in college it was med school admission, in med school it will be residency slots, etc...the path of achievement will never end. :)
daniquepasa10 03-04-2005, 09:04 AM Anyone take you up on that offer yet?
For anyone interested, Next year I will have a room for rent in a two bedroom apartment.
And let me just say that housing is very expensive around here and going up every year, so keep that in mind when you guys look for places to live.
mandar 03-04-2005, 01:43 PM Hey Guys,
I got the official acceptance letter from NSU this morning.
Thanks to Sharon Lee for answering all my questions.
And Kai has been anything but helpful to a fellow Hoosier and boilermaker throughout this interview process (Thanks a lot).
NSU was my top choice when i started this application process 4 months ago due to their reputation and impressive clinical facilities. But in the meantime I have interviewed at other DO schools and was really impressed by PCOM-Atlanta. It is a new school but the people who interviewed me were fantastic and I won't be suprised if PCOM-Atlanta becomes a reputated stand alone DO school like AZCOM in less than ten years due to their extremely friendly administrators. But being a new school , the system may have some bugs which the first batch may have to deal with.
I have heard that NSUCOM administrators are not very good dealing with students, but in their defense they don't have to prove anything because NSU already has a impressive match list which says it all.
I would like to make the final decision over this weekend so I can free up the seat at the other school (the one which I decide not to go) as their may be some other deserving students who are waiting for their chance to get accepted (I feel sorry for the guys who check the mail ten times a day so they can get some love from schools as I was in the same boat not too long ago)
I may email some of you if I have any specific questions.
I really liked NSU dean Dr. Shilvagni ( I would like to have moustache like him  )
Mandar
NotShorty 03-04-2005, 03:18 PM And Kai has been anything but helpful...
 That appeared to be phrased like a compliment
So, PCOM-A or NSU-COM? Begin the Jeopardy music...
Trailblazers always have hell to pay. Of course they also have administrators that bend over backwards to please. I'd disagree that NSU admin has nothing to prove, not because of anything specific, but because there is always room for improvement.
Yeah, my answer isn't very definitive. I just want to start some dialogue with everyone who has some opinions on this.
Anyway - Cheers to those accepted to the class of 2009! Please fight the urge to pick up those medical books...put a margarita in your hand instead! There's plenty of time to get motivated, plus we're really eased into our studies for the first month or two.
If you're like me, you'll be shirtless and wasted until late September (uh oh, did I reveal my identity? ).
mandar, one thing I'll say is that you'll have amazingly wonderful classmates here...not to mention a class of 2nd years that will guide you through your first hellish year (top that, PCOM!).

Notshorty and OmedDoc: thanks for the support
I am going to be at NSU this fall.
It was a pretty tough decision to decide between two good schools and I am sure lot of people on this forum went through the same experience.
What swing my decision in favor of NSU was the big school environment. I went to ug school which was big (around 40k students), took post Bacc. classes at a big school so i may be more comfortable at a big school.
Looking forward to seeing you all in fall.

I have a couple questions regarding the acceptance letter from Vice Chancellor for Student Services and Professional Coordination Marla Frohlinger:
1) When do we receive the NSU tuition invoice?
2) It says that transcripts must be received by the Office of Admissions 90 calendar days from the date of registration. When is the date of registration?
One more thing... I just found out that I got a 4-year U.S. Navy scholarship (HPSP). Any current students having the military pay for med school via HPSP? If so, I've got questions for you... Thanks guys.

They run 'em pretty quick if I recall. I'd wager no more than a few business days. If you're running into a credit limit prob, I'd get on it ASAP. If possible, you may want to get a credit card with 0% interest for balance transfers.

Oh, and I guess it goes w/o saying that I'll be in next years' class now. Cheers.

Palm Trace Apartments seem to be the nicest, while Cedar Key are definitely nice and really close to campus. It would be fun if all of us M1's lived near each other next year. anyways... i cant wait to get out of cold ***** chicago and into florida's sunny weather!

Hello and welcome.
I am going to be a MS-1 next year and my roomate and I are both from Indiana. We are targeting to be about 10-15 minutes away from campus. During an analysis of factors that were most important to us in an apartment (that amazingly predicted our #1 choice in apts), the places closest to campus didn't even come up on our list of top 20 places to visit.
I'm going to quit mumbling now--welcome, it will be good to meet everyone next year. I can't wait for July1 to be here....(as that is when I will be in our new apt). :)

Hey Kinjal,
Welcome to NSUCOM 2009 class forum. I am also going to be MS1 at NSUCOM this fall. I am from indianapolis and very often used to go to chicago for clubing when I was a ug student at Purdue.
I am jealous of you that you could quit your job :meanie: . I wish i could do that, I am working on a project and have to complete that before I quit. But man it so hard to focus on work after you have come to know that you have been accepted to school.
I am inclining towards Cedar key apartments, how much i would have loved living away from campus, I am kind of lazy bump in the morning and scared that if I live away from campus I may run late for my morning classes. So i am thinking of sticking to the ones close to campus.
I will PM you if I am in Chicago any time soon.

Just to let you know all of my friends that chose to live that far away from campus truly wish they lived right next to school. The places next to school are okay and not really much pricier than places you'll find at a distance.
Just thought i'd throw in my 2 cents from personal experience. when you're in class all day, everyday, the last thing you want to do is be stuck in traffic for 20-30 minutes during rush hour.
Sharon Lee 03-19-2005, 09:59 PM My roommate and I are on the wait list for Cedar Key, we got on it in January so we hope that we'll be one of the lucky ones that get an apartment...anyone know if anyone has been unfortuante and never made it off the wait list?
Also, I'm moving from PA and at first I was thinking about U-Hauling all my stuff (furniture, bed, dresser, desks, yada yada) with me, but now I think I'll save the U-Haul money and buy new (or used) when I get to FL. Are there usually a lot of graduating students looking to get rid of stuff, or any good furniture stores nearby campus?
Thanks,
Sharon Lee

Thanks for the warning.
I am sure those are nice apartment complexes, but Cedar Keys didn't even list 3br apts (and we won't look at anything smaller)..and Palm Trace is about 300-400/mo more expensive for same sq footage to be 10 minutes closer to school--with floor plans that don't work near as well for us on top of it. We have VERY specific things that we were looking for and made our decision based upon twenty factors that were weighted and calculated based upon our own personal preferences. MUCH thought has been put into this decision (probably much more than most ppl).
I actually think I (meaning my roomie) spent more time analyzing which apratment complex to live in than I did which school to go to or who to live with--I think I'm covered on this one. :)
Thanks again! :)

People do not realize they are there, they are off colege ave. right behind school.
It takes me 1 min. to drive to school and I never get on University (traffic) Drive.
I live in a 1200 sq. ft. 3 bedroom for only 1200 a month....
Good luck to everyone finding a place

Guess maybe I came acrossed a bit harsh. I was just trying to get acrossed the point that not everyone likes to live on top of campus and on top of a whole bunch of other ppl who are in all your classes.
...I guess I am a bit more analytical in my decision process and I just don't understand how anyone could possibly make a decision on where to live based upon seeing (or not even seeing) one or two places. Regardless, happy hunting everyone.

hey Kai kai
since you have done the research do you mind sharing your apartment picks with us?
i have no idea where to start, my main objective is comfort
i would rather spend more each month and be comfortable than try and save a 150$ and be distracted by my apt
Fin-Nor 03-21-2005, 08:27 AM gaud... i sure am glad i dont live on university or anywhere near nsu's campus. so much better, imo. i dont mind the driving time to get to school in the morning either, so i guess im an odd ball.
pine island is the way to go if u want less traffic yet still not too far away. im literally 5 min. away from my favorite stores (best buy, compusa, circuit city :)) sam's club, sawgrass mills mall, target, walmart, and 2 min from broward mall, publix and winn dixie.

I started with Apartment Guide Online (http://www.apartmentguide.com). I believe there are ~80 apartments listed in Broward County, and the search process is pretty easy to use.
Hope this helps.
Kinjal350z 03-21-2005, 11:28 AM for me, convenience is the most important thing. all i really looked for was my own room, bathroom, parking, and to be as close to school as possible. in undergrad, i was always a 5 minute walk from campus, and i never drove to school. so basically it would be easier for me just to stay close to campus. im sure that those of u who are putting in alot of thought and being very particular with what u want will have the nicest apartments of us all, so make sure to invite us to your cribs!

im coming from chicago, and there is no way i would uhaul my stuff. like u said, it is an expensive process. im planning to move down at least one week early to bu my furniture and get adjusted. im hoping there is an ikea or something in the vicinity.

Ah; I love Ikea...but sorry, there is NO Ikea in the entire state of FL. If you are set on them, I think you will be ordering online (but then the shipping rates kill you anyhow). Unfortunately the nearest Ikea to me is in Chicago, about 3 hours away so I don't visit often.
I don't know how expensive your furinture is that you currently have; but if anyone is wanting to hold onto it--regional carriers like Mayflower who go to FL from the Midwest often may be a better option than a U-Haul for moving. Also, I know there are several ppl (at least 4 from the top of my head) moving from the midwest--so sharing cost may be an idea also.
Kinjal350z 03-22-2005, 08:25 AM so me and my roommate were talking, and neither of us has anything to bring to the apartment, because I am coming from out of state, and he simply has nothing. what do you think we should do? we could maybe get a furnished apartment, but i think the rent would be super high. should we then rent or buy furniture? any stores you would reccomend?
brent311 03-22-2005, 10:05 AM Hi everyone, I applied to NSU a while back and I believe that my file was complete in December but I havnt heard a word. I have sent several emails with no response and called several times and left messages with no return phone calls. If I havnt heard anything yet does this mean that I dont have a chance? Does anyone know if the class is almost full or if they are even giving interviews anymore? Thanks .

I have no clue what your chance is, if the class is full (but it wasn't a few weeks ago), etc; however, I do have advice. Call them again and again and again and don't leave messages because they don't generally return your calls. The admissions office seems to be severely understaffed (or they just don't like their voicemails). Call and keep calling until you get to talk to a real person...at least then you may get an idea of where you stand.
Good luck. :)

Brent,
It took a while for NSU to give me an interview or even look at my file. I was complete sometime in october and didn't heard a word from them till almost end of january. I was getting kind of impatient by end of december as NSU was my top choice, so this is what i did and it may help you:
1) I called NSU office and ask for Delia Celestine (It took me atleast 3 or four calls to get hold of her, i never left a message because i read on sdn that they never return calls). When i finally got hold of her, i told her that NSU was my top choice and I am desperately waiting to hear back from them (Try to show some interest in school and be nice). It would help if you have any connections with NSU like you live in Southern Florida and have visited the campus etc.
2) I send a certified letter address to Admission Committee with all the reasons why i want to be a student at NSU. I also mention about the grad classes which i took last semester and what grades I got. I also mention about the two research publications which i had in last six months. (So try to pin point all your new accomplishments) I also send my resume.
I don't know if any of these things help.
If you need any other help, PM me and I would be more than happy to help in any possible way. I know how depressing waiting to hear from schools is.....
Good Luck.
NotShorty 03-23-2005, 01:29 AM Does anyone know if the class is almost full or if they are even giving interviews anymore? Thanks .
Nothing's impossible, but start working on Plan B. It's pretty late in the cycle.

brent311 03-23-2005, 05:05 PM thanks everyone for the responses. I finally got in touch with someone today and she said that they arnt doing anymore interviews until they see how many people decide not to go to nsu. They also said that they will send out letters soon either rejecting people or telling them they are still under review for the few spots that people turn down. So it looks like my chances are slim but not impossible.

This is what it says on their website

WE DRIVE the trailer to your new destination. The transportation industry recognizes ABF drivers for their outstanding safety record.
YOU SAVE money! There are no unknown costs like there are with renting a truck. You can even save thousands of dollars over full-service movers, since you pay only for the space you use.

Mobile Container Terminal-To-Terminal from www.upack.com. It is cheaper than the other option (Door-To-Door from U-pack)
Mobile Container Terminal-to-Terminal gave me an estimate of 600$ to move from Indianapolis to Miami (They don't have a terminal in Fort Lauderdale so they will deliver the container in Miami.
This is the information from the website about Mobile Container Terminal-To-Terminal Moving:
With this option, you will pack and load your belongings in a U-Pack Mobile Container at the ABF terminal nearest to your origin location. This weather-proof container is approximately 5'x 7'x 8' (LWH) and can be locked with a personal padlock for additional security. Once packed and loaded, ABF will transport your container to the nearest destination terminal where you will unpack and unload your container. Your estimate for the container is an all-inclusive rate for transportation of your belongings on a terminal-toterminal basis.
redwings54 03-25-2005, 04:59 PM Hello all. First let me congratulate you on gaining acceptance into such a great school. I will soon be applying to schools and am trying to gain an insider's view into certain schools I am highly considering and NSUCOM is one of them. So if I can pick your brains a little, I would really be appreciative. So here goes: Are there any cool features of your curriculum, besides Harvey I think it is, that are unique or that you do really well? When do you start patient interaction? How is the general atmosphere down in sunny Florida? Can you actually study with the beautiful weather? How are the rotation sites? With so many people close by I assume they are pretty good, but I dont know. What differentiated NSUCOM from other schools you applied to? I am also looking at those of you that are students there now, NotShorty, looking to you, is NSU really as great as it sounds? Any insight would be really apreciated and maybe I will see you there in the future. Again, congrats and thanks.

So if I can pick your brains a little, I would really be appreciative. So here goes: Are there any cool features of your curriculum, besides Harvey I think it is, that are unique or that you do really well?
Harvey is cool but you don't see him much as a first year. he is mainly for 2nd years to work with. We have access but were all too busy to play. Maybe I'll play with him in a few weeks when our load drops dramatically. I think we do clinical experiences really well at this school. By the time you hit the wards I don't think many are afraid of the patient or have worries about just going up and talking to them.
When do you start patient interaction?
1st year with simulated patient exams and shadowing primary care physicians.
How is the general atmosphere down in sunny Florida?
I studied by the pool today with sunscreen on. No joke. But the atmosphere is one of constant studying or being in class. at least for me my free time (like now) I feel bad for not studying. In all though I smile every day as I walk past palm trees to school...
Can you actually study with the beautiful weather?
Yes....depends on who you are if you see it a little or a lot....but its nice to have around when you actually do get free time.
How are the rotation sites?
I think they rock but I hate having a lotto system like so many other schools. Kinda annoying but I really like some of the rotation sites. My favorites are Mt Siani, Broward, Memorial, and the VA hospital in West Palm. Others will tell you different. This last year Orlando was the most requested at Orlando East Regional Hospital.
What differentiated NSUCOM from other schools you applied to?
Tuition, friendly students, weather, and proximity to a large airport and city. I lived in small rual areas and wanted to have access to lots of shops, resturants, and a life if I ever got out of a study room.
I am also looking at those of you that are students there now, NotShorty, looking to you, is NSU really as great as it sounds? I'm Not NotShorty but every school has its issues. We have the scanning in and dress code....of course at the current moment we really don't have either but its still in place and the administration can decide to enforce it hard core if they wish. In the end they do want us to be great physicians but thats just what I know is annoying. Other schools have other issues. Do your research. I am still happy I came here and I just got back from Peru on a Medical Mission which made me realize a little of why I am working so damn hard. Good luck to you.
HoodyHoo 03-30-2005, 10:00 PM I'll fire off some really quick replies as I avoid neurophys studying....
what up Robz, i also studied by the pool today.........actually I took my notes into the pool as I stood in the water probably for about 3 hours. It was the first time i tried studyin outside in the beautiful weather, but man, it was awesome.
Now that my head is filled with Globus Pallidus and i'm thinking about how inhibition of GP doesn't allow GP to inhibit SNr, leading to excitation of SN which acts to excite GPi and SNr, which ultimately works to inhibit the thalamus leading to decreased muscle activity.........please, a gun would help right about now.
anybody got one?
