box29, yah that was me. When I said that I have been waiting to meet my classmates, I meant my 2009 classmates (I've already met some 08'ers!).

I thought OMM lab was very interesting. I can't wait to start learning some of it myself. It was really up close and personal.

Yes, I stayed with a female. And as far as how much I enjoyed my stay...I guess it's just more fun letting you guys speculate. :D No, seriously, everything I came out there to check out exceeded my expectations!!!!!

Oh, btw, if you are who I think you are,...um....I think I heard about you while I was out there. (I know kinda vague ;) ) Can't wait to meet you in person. :D

Also, if you have time, could you or Brian, or anyone else get a good picture or two of all your classmates with your names included. I know this is a lot to ask, so I can understand if you don't get around to it, but if you did, I would really appreciate it!

So Cardiotonic... looks like I am learning about why you are so interested in attending TUCOM

The current students were really great at my interview, as they are now with their support. The faculty that I met were all really welcoming and I heard great things about them from students. Roger was also really awesome. I just can't wait to be a part of it and help out future applicants like they've helped us.

What do you plan on doing for housing? I saw some nice houses at the corner when you pull up to the first light when leaving the school. You can walk to school if there is anything left to get there.

Anyway, I look forward to meeting you and our fellow classmates. I have talked to a couple so far and everybody seems great so far. TUCOM's selection process is really good far! :p

P.S. Current students: are classes blocks too? I mean, some schools get like 4 classes but they are intense and finish that block in a month and start a new block of classes. Are we like that? Also, how much free time to you find yourselves having to get away from studying (if any?). Maybe I should post on the class of 2008 but I'll wait to see if I hear back here. Thanks!

 So about housing...oh yah...this is another reason why I love TUCOM-NV. Keep in mind that I'm from St. Louis, where people supposedly live out of barns  , but anyway, I love the architecture in Henderson. Everything I have looked at (apts.) has been really nice. In my opinion there is not much difference between apartment complexes in quality or price. The two bedroom apts. will run you about $440/person/month, and the three bedroom apts. will run you about $350/person/month. I haven't really checked out any houses yet, but this might be a great investment if you can get your hands on something!

You've met other 09'ers (no, I'm not talking on a walkie talkie)? So where they at?

Hey 09'ers!
I can't wait to meet all of you! When are u guys coming to visit us? ;) I talked to some of you guys...and I'm sure we gonna have an awesome class next yr! :) For the housing thing, lots of the people here live in Remington Canyon apartments (rite down the street), Villa Serena (where I live.... 1 mile from school) or Timberlake Apartments... And yeah, it's also a good idea to look at houses (it's a good investment according to many of classmates).
Again, Congrats to all of ya!
Gladys
PS: Cardiotonic.... What about Box 29? Tell me! hehehe jk I remember you too! U were practicing OMM with Brian just rite next to me! :p

:D It's really a good website. I am back and staying here. No, I've been doing some crazy research paper for my Psych elective course ( and I thought Psych would be an easy major  ) and preparing for finals... my last semester as an undergraduate and it's depressing... because I know what awaits me on the other side (MS!!) and I loved my school :( . Anyway, time to let this tequila wear off so I can study some more tomorrow and chat here on SDN during my breaks.

Hey Cardio, sounds like a great deal indeed but unfortunately that's the weekend before finals. Have fun and get vacation "vegas" out of your system as much as possible because soon that's our home  !!

Wow that's a lot of smileys for one post

Congratulations to all of you ... we, the class of 2008, eagerly await your joining us here in las Vegas...

it is exciteing for us to hopefully help you all transition in to medical school...we only wish that we would have had 2nd years to bounce questions off of...

along those lines...if any of you need anything please email us or call us, we know what you are going thorugh and where you're going...if we can, let us help.

email works best for me due to my infrequent visiting of the SDN...

TUCOM-NV opened last year and their inaugral class is currently in their first year. Our class, 2009, will be the second year. The same holds true for LECOM-Bradenton and PCOM-Atlanta.

Hello fellow Touro-nv class mates!
I am going to Touro-NV in next year and wanted to ask some questions.
1. Are anyone buying or renting a home?
Is it a good idea to buy?
2. what will the 3rd and 4th years be like? I know there is have the first year class
but will most of the rotation go on outside of Henderson?
3. any tips for how to pay for medical school?
4. any things that anyone could tell me tabout going to
medical school and the lifestyle there would be great.

OK. Sounds good to me. It would be a good idea for us to plan this trip soon so we can get a good deal for a Spring trip. I just wish that we had more people in on it than just the three of us....which brings up a good question...does anyone know how many students have been officially accepted so far? We should find out and try to recruit as many people as possible. Also, how long are you two planning on staying in Vegas? Can't wait to finally meet you!

I don't think Mr. Corbman would have an issue with giving us an email list so that we can invite others. Anyway, about planning anything, I really suck. So please don't count on me to plan out the trip. But let me know if you want me to contact Roger. If he's not up for it, the three of us will be just fine. Maybe some of those people that just watch our thread will join us too.

TU-NV has their final block next week, good luck to them :luck:

Hey everyone! Congrats on getting into our little warehouse out here in Henderson!

Don't really have too much time to answer a lot of questions right now, as we start block exams next week and we're all in hell!

The reason why people are getting picked up off the waitlist is that Roger wanted there to be a certain number of confirmed people in the class before Christmas. So, people who interviewed early and are high on the waitlist are getting an oppurtunity for admittance at this stage of the application cycle. Probably won't be too many more people taken off right now, but I'm sure there will be more in the late spring.

Again, congrats on your acceptance and we'll see you next year!

First, CONGRADULATIONS!

i have the ones who were accepted in MY cycle. not everyone who has been accepted. But Roger told us that we would get a single group email of all who were accepted in our cycle. As for those who didn't get in, I only have an idea out of who wasn't accepted from my interview day. So it does kindda suck. but it also gives us a contact start on meeting some potential classmates for next year!

let us know what you decide! hope to have you in our class!

hey everybody. as JJ (Tranquility said), i started a group on Google the link is: http://groups-beta.google.com/group/Vegas-Med

essentially, when we get more people on, we can send emails to everybody using: vegas-med@googlegroups.com

it can be convenient if we need it, which hopefully we will.

Anyway, i've been getting in touch with various people so send me an IM, or sdn message, or harrass me over the phone (note: my number is on the google group site) when you get a moment.

I will be going out with Brian, and hopefully JJ this weekend. So if you can rally, try to make it out to Vegas.
If not this weekend, let me know anytime you're going and I will make a special trip...and depending on my winnings, maybe get a limo if we can fill it.

I just got my renewal notice for my Gym and it is going to expire Jan 5 :(

I can only renew for a year at a time so I will be without a gym for a few months until I get to Henderson. Looking at Napa Valley Apartments... they have a gym :)

Also looked at Remington and Ventana Canyon apartments, but Napa is a bit cheaper. I wish I knew how much we will get for financial aid so that I know how much I can afford.

They told me at my interview that they budget 700-900 a month for housing. Any thoughts on this... what about food and other bills?

Anyone know of phlebotomy jobs in Henderson (may just need the blood money)?

hey DrB!

Uhm.... which gym do you go to?

as for housing... yah... it will depend on the complex (and that will also go for your electric, gas, water, sewer, trash) I know at my complex I have my phone, electric, and gas. then the water, sewer and trash is split between the units based on square footage. food depends on how much you eat, how much you eat out... the usual... i don't think the prices here are that much different in terms of groceries... but then again, i don't know, it also depends on where you choose to go grocery shopping. gas is really good here right now (YAY! finally again) low grade yesterday was 1.87 medium was 1.97 and top was 2.07 (at least at the cheveron near my apartment)

go look at the apartment complexes though. that is the best advice i can give you. make sure you like the complex. it is hard to tell over the internet.

i will keep my eyes open for blood jobs ;)

I hear you are living in Henderson now. Where do you live? I am thinking about Remington Canyon Apartments.

If someone would be willing to share a three bedroom apartment at Remington Canyon, that would be swell!

I was in Henderson a week and a half ago. I saw a lot of apartments out there. Has anyone seen the Timberlake apartments? I haven't seen those yet.

:)

I live in henderson already. i am out on pecos and windmill right now in the camden summits apartments. i like them. they have attached garages with direct entrance. But that was an important thing for me when i was looking at apartments.

feel free to contact me. you can pm, im, call, which ever works best for you. i don't know if you have hit up the google site or not. but i think all my contact info is over there. if you don't want to... pm me and i will send it all to you.

take care and hope to talk to you soon

Perfect apartment for a military dude...remington...

I am interested in sharing an apartment... think Timberlake floorplan was best for sharing a 2-3bedroom. I went to Napa Valley apartments while in Henderson and I liked them too.

For everyone else who would like a house-mate when are you thinking of moving? I would like to move in by June 1 latest July 1... I am working night shifts and need a few months to reset my clock before school starts.

Ok guys, I don't really get this, no one has really introduced themselves. I don't know anyone's real name, age, sex, interests....
I'll start:
-I'm Nima (yea there are going to be 2 Nimas in our class)
-I interviewed on Dec 14th.
-I grew up in Europe, in Spain and Belgium
-The girl that I was dating just broke up with me, lots of drama, long story. Here's the summary: I feel like crap.
-I'll probably move into Henderson in June or July. My parents are talking about buying me a condo there as an investment, but I don't know yet, I might just rent a one bedroom apt.
-I'm flat ass broke, so I can't go on any trips to Vegas.
-I live in Valencia, 40min North of Los Angeles.
-I graduated from UCLA, BS in physiological science and psychobio.
-I'm just chilling for the time being, no job, no school. I'll start looking for a job this week, but I dont know if anyone would give me a job knowing that I will be leaving in 6 months.
-Ok, enough for today.
Here's my e-mail: drnima@sbcglobal.net
You can also IM me. I have an away message, but I'm usually in my room, so just write me and I'll get to my computer. Here's my screen name: drnimatoad.

Santa Cruz phlebotomist, UCSC grad, 25 years old, born in Kansas, hope to move into a single apartment, but think shared housing is better for the budget... all we get is 1200/month to live on.

To Marianne,
Hey you have a really good chance of getting in if you are on the waiting list. I know some people who were waitlested and have gotten in-even at low tier. Just keep on updating them by writing letters on how you are trying to strengthen your application. You have to keep reminding them that you are seriously interested in becoming a TUCOM-DO.

Marianne11 was interviewed because of her stats... they looked good already. She was wait listed because the adcoms need to know that she wants to go to their school more than the other student who has good stats. I was a previous wait lister. This is a game you can't prepare for, only hope for the best, keep the faith, and bug the sh!t out of them.

Time out DrB

How do you know the critieria for earning an interview? or the reasons that someone was waitlisted? Do you sit on the admissions committee? (FYI: Secondaries and interviews are granted on many factors, not just MCAT score and GPA)

I congratulate you on earning a spot in the class of 2009, but securing said spot does not give you the authority or insight as to how TUCOM-NV selects members of its various cohorts. As a first year I have been extremely lucky to work fairly intimately with the office of admissions. As close as I might be with those who do make the final decisions, I would never be so brash as to say I know why or why not a person may or may not earn an seat in the class.

I understand that you are only trying to be helpful, but in my humble opinion, "(bugging) the sh!t out of them" isn't the most constructive course of action.

I think a letter of intent is good. I would also keep Roger updated as to any additional ecs, experiences, grade changes that would help you out. And positive thinking is always good. Just don't go overboard with it. Keep in touch. I am sure you will do fine.

I graduated with a 3.85 GPA, MCAT sucked though. :) I thought the interview went really well, but I was already in med school last year and am on a leave of absence, so they might think I don't need this acceptance as bad as someone else, but it is my first choice school. Hey All!

My name is Cory and also recently got the acceptance letter. I had a question about a laptop purchase. I was wondering if Touro had any special specifications that needed to go along with the laptop.

Currently I am looking at either a dell 700m, which I really like, but I'm concerned that the screen (12 in.) will be too small for certain things. I'm also looking into the dell 600m which is heavier but has a larger screen (14 in.)

Any suggestions?

Congratulations Cory  I had the same concerns with those two Dells so I'm just waiting to see if anything else comes out. Weight is a big factor because I have a really bad back, but a big screen is also important. The laptops with the combination of the two are very expensive. As far as specifications, I am pretty sure the new laptops have what we need.

Thanks Nate! I appreciate the information about rotations. I know that Dr. Forman has already started a PGY-1 internship at UMC this year. From the MISL webpage on "Rotations" (http://forums.misl.info/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=3), I have heard a lot of good things from the Mare Island Students who have done or are currently doing their rotations in Nevada.

I still think we should have a bi-monthly column in either the SUN or Review-Journal Newspaper, that provides health tips, and or information regarding health awareness for the community in Southern Nevada.

Hello everyone,

That sounds like a great idea, let's see what we can do. I decided finally to be a little more vocal on the site so if anyone has questions for me feel free to email me. I think I saw on of you is from Tucson and that's where I was born and raised (go cats!). All you ASU guys that's just another story ;) Looks like we'll have a great incoming class next year. Good luck to everyone.

That was me. I am from Tucson, and I like to hear there is another wildcat fan! Going to watch them beat Washington tonight at Mckale Center. I didn't want to get this ASU vs. UA thing started, but since you already have, I'm so glad to be on the winning side.

I'm going crazy here wondering if I will get off the list. For those of you who are in the 2008 class and were waitlisted, how long did it take before you heard anything? Does anyone know how many spots have been accepted for 2009? Once someone reserves a spot & pays, do they actually change their mind and drop? I sent in a letter of intent. Hope it helps. :scared:

As of the email I got on the 25th, there are 74 people who have put down their deposit for the c/o '09.

Some people do drop after putting in their deposit. They are just holding their seat and could be hoping for an offer at a different school. TUCOM-nv only gives your two weeks to think about it. So it is almost safer to put in the deposit, especially if you are waiting on other schools, or uncertain of which you really want to go to, then deciding later that you don't want to go to one or the other.

As for waitlist movement and hearing anything about it. I don't know. I was a reapplicant this year after being waitlisted last year, but i didn't interview until may, so my wait wasn't as long. And i know a few people got pulled off the waitlist right before Christmas, but I don't know how that worked other then hearsay.

Keep your fingers crossed, and positive thoughts and it will all work out like it is suppose to.

Nate and Nik,
I also have a few other ideas.
I think it would be great if TUCOM-Nevada would organize a bi-yearly Health Fair, where Doctors, Nurses, Teachers, and Students can come together to Provide health tips, immunizations, health and wellness education, etc., for our community. All of the Hospitals and Clinics around town could get together in a collaborative effort with Touro University.

Another idea that I have, is to create a monthly newsletter, where students, and fellow faculty write about current health issues, and health topics that are of interest to the medical community and to the public at large.

I found this website, that might help some people find an apartment/house with a roomate: roommates.com

If I can, I want to only pay $500-$600 max for an apartment.
I can imagine the difficulties students will have, if they have spouses that need to relocate and find new jobs.

My wife Mona is a Health Unit Coordinator on a General Surgical Floor at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Hospital. I hope to come out in March to help her look for a job at St Rose's Hospital.
I my self may have to work at least once a week. So I will also be looking for a job.

I really hope TUCOM-Nevada will build a Health Sciences Center/Hospital were people can come from all over the world to study, learn, teach, and do research. It would be a bonus to receive NIH funding, and have M.S. and Ph.D. programs available. Plus we could have our own teaching hospital... I suppose I am just a day dreamer..

I know I'm not a student yet, or accepted, but my last school did a few cool things for M1s. Around June we received the email addresses of all the accepted students. We got a lot of mail from students looking for roommates, to meet up & do things before orientation etc. It was really helpful. So if someone was moving to the area, other students would offer to let them stay why they looked for a place. And, if you didn't want the emails they just removed you. The other really cool thing was that they had a freshman facts book. If I'm accepted, fingers crossed, I could volunteer to do this. Basically everyone accepted sends or emails a recent pic, and answers basic questions like hometown, birthday, single/married/etc, pets, hobbies, etc. The first day of orientation everyone gets a copy so you can put names/faces together, plus be able to find people from your undergrad or that have similar interests. My class had over 200 students so it was necessary. It was the most used book at orientation. I can imagine that the Touro NV book would totally rock. My last school was well, hate to say it, b o r i n g....so the book helped but then what you have is what you have. Let's just say the students were nothing like the awesome people I met in the class of Touro NV 2008. :)

I second your wish for this hospital. I think exposure to the field as an early med student is an important learning experience. It can be an invaluable gift to the community as well as give us hands on experience working with patients.

It was 100% optional, and you only answer questions that you want to. About 99% of the class did, but only put what they wanted. So not everyone answred the age question, etc. It is just a name & face book with a little personalization. So when someone new sees you they can think oh yeah, he's from Cali and has a pet turtle etc. It wouldn't be a big deal to create, just mail merge/forms/set fields in Word. :)

I am still working on that, I have the loans, now I am looking for a place. I have found that condos are the way to go. As for the development of student housing, I don't think this will happen any time soon/ever. TUN's location was picked because of the "affordable" housing in the area.

If you are interested in buying, try eloans.com, lendingtree.com, ditech.com
Then look at the many sites for resale homes: reviewjournal.com, homestore.com, craigslist.org

For my own $0.02 I think renting is the best idea in your situation. Then try apartments.com, reviewjournal.com, and craigslist.org

I am intersted to know what kinds of electives we will have at TUCOM-Nevada.

Here is the list of Electives at TUCOM-CA:

ELECTIVE COURSES

Human Growth and Variation(elective - 1 credit hour)
In this seminar-discussion course, the biological and behavioral foundations of human growth and variation are considered: what is normal, abnormal, common to all people or exclusive to certain groups? How does the body grow from birth to adulthood and what genetic, environmental, and cultural factors influence the outcome? Clinical conditions related to the growth process and congenital diseases that reflect the recent histories of ethnic groups are discussed. Modern human ethnic or "racial" variation is considered as it relates to models for global dispersion and colonization. The course also considers behavioral aspects of culture, such as diet, nutrition, and activity levels as they relate to the spectrum of clinical problems in our society.

Summer Clinical Preceptorship(elective - 0.5 - 1 credit hour)
This class is intended to provide students with the opportunity to apply basic science knowledge in a clinical setting during an otherwise non-academic time; i.e., between the first and second years. Students will, with approval of the course coordinator, work with a faculty member of TUCOM, a clinician at another institution, or a licensed physician in the community, in order to observe medical practice in an area of medicine and a clinical setting of their choice.

Special Topics in Medical Ethics(elective - 1 credit hour)
Physicians in all fields of medicine are frequently faced with difficult decisions that they must make or assist their patients in making. This course will: consider the underlying structure and means of ethical decision-making; identify resources for working through difficult ethical decisions; examine several important ethical dilemmas facing physicians today, and facilitate the student's gaining insight into his/her own ethical principles and ideals. Among the general topics that may be included are: ethics and patient care; ethics and research; ethics and new technology.

Medical Spanish (elective - 1 credit hour)
The overall objective of this course, which is intended to be a beginner's course, is to help the student to determine the chief complaint of the Spanish-speaking patient, provide basic medical instructions, obtain information about the patient, and answer the patient's most common questions. These objectives will be achieved through teaching of Spanish medical terminology, colloquial words and phrases, and some basic grammar, as well as through practice sessions in conducting histories and physicals in Spanish.

Pregnancy Partners(elective - 1 credit hour)
This program is designed to allow students without extensive clinical training (first-year students) to observe and act as advocates in the prenatal care, labor, and delivery of a prospective mother. The prospective mothers are clients of "Great Beginnings Prenatal Services" operated through Sutter-Solano Medical Center in Vallejo, CA. In the program a TUCOM student is matched with a prospective mother, attends all prenatal office visits, and is present during labor and delivery, as well as for the first postpartum office visit. The student will observe the relationships developed between the prospective mother and her health care providers and the protocol of the labor and delivery rooms. The student will act as an advocate only, e.g., encouraging the prospective mother to ask any questions she might have at her office visits, reminding her of her visits, but never dispensing medical advice. The course will also include lectures on a variety of topics related to maternal and fetal health.

Religious Liberty in a Post 9/11 World:
Reflections on George Washington's 1790 Letter
to Touro Synagogue

by Eli N. Evans

Eli N. Evans was the keynote speaker on August 18, 2002 at the annual reading of George Washington's 1790 letter to Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island. This article is adapted from the speech.

In just a few weeks, on the anniversary of the September 11th disaster, America will reflect on the meaning of the attack and its lessons for history. In New York City, sensitive to the victims and their families, the Mayor has announced that there will be no speeches by political leaders that day, only readings from the Declaration of Independence and the Gettysburg Address-two of America's sanctified documents. There is another sanctified document that I would nominate for that celebration as well: President George Washington's 1790 letter to Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island. Though less well known, this message from the Father of our Country summons up the underlying spirit of the times in which our young nation was born, and by which we still live today.

Washington's message resonates powerfully in our post 9/11 world:

The Citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud themselves for having given to mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal policy: a policy worthy of imitation. All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship. It is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people, that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights. For happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it on all occasions their effectual support.

George Washington recognized that the American Revolution was launching a worldwide revolution and the idea of the "natural rights of man" would circle the globe to inspire the hearts and souls of men and women everywhere. He saw toleration not as the "indulgence of one class of people" for others, but owed as an obligation to all.

Washington described a tolerance virtually unique in the world at that time, a tolerance expressed in deeds as well as words. He was inaugurated as the first President of the United States just a few months earlier, on April 30, 1790, at the Federal Hall in New York City, a building even now standing in Lower Manhattan, only a few minutes walk from the plot of land that would eventually become the World Trade Center. And among the invitees was Gershom Mendes Seixas, spiritual leader of Congregation Shearith Israel in New York, generally considered the first American rabbi and one of three clergy invited to participate in the inauguration. Joint participation in such an imposing public setting could not have been imagined in any European city at the time.

One of Washington's first trips as president was his visit to Newport; he traveled there with Thomas Jefferson, as part of the campaign for passage of the Bill of Rights. When he arrived, Washington was handed a letter from Moses Seixas, a member of the New York Seixas family and the warden of Touro Synagogue, which by inference complained about the denial of the vote and the inability to hold office for Jews and Catholics in Rhode Island.

As the proposed Bill of Rights contained the clause "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of a religion or prohibit the free exercise thereof," Washington was able to illustrate that, in America, faith, any faith, was to be a private matter, beyond state interference. In so doing, he fulfilled a political need of the moment, but he also articulated principles that, with a sense of awe and even gratitude, we continue to commemorate today.

Americans in the late eighteenth century, like Americans now, were a people with strong religious beliefs. But as Arthur Hertzberg, distinguished author of The Jews of America, has stated, "the separation of church and state in America asks something very new and quite remarkable, of all religions in America. . . . self-limitation," the kind of voluntary restraint that must be adopted by all majority faiths.

This principle had particular relevance for the Jews who had come to America seeking religious freedom. Here in America, President Washington made clear, Jews were not a religious sect, a minority group merely tolerated by the government and the ruling establishment. Rather, he said emphatically, in America, all people were free to worship as they chose. Indeed, the bedrock value that God is universal and we are all God's children--that no one faith is more true than another-has been, I believe, America's gift to the world. Only through the embrace of religious freedom, religious tolerance, and religious liberty will the peoples of our diverse world find their way to an era of religious coexistence.

Although the September 11 attackers left no written statements explaining their motives, subsequent events have revealed an intent to attack the very idea of America itself--its religious freedoms, its principles, its central purpose. The World Trade Center, like the Pentagon, was a symbolic target, and the New York attack occurred in the shadow of another revered symbol, the Statue of Liberty.

On September 11th, people will come together to listen to our founding documents, and to ponder their meaning for the age we live in and the future we face. The words of those documents - and Washington's words to the Touro Synagogue -- take on new meaning in light of the destruction of dreams and lives in the World Trade Center and the Pentagon a year ago. In the long shadow cast by those events, the Washington letter shines like a beacon and can show us the way.

What a timely message for all Americans to hear: to remember that pluralism, diversity and respect for differences is, in the end, the only way for humanity to survive.

Oh! Ok, I’ll go back to my allopathic thread, since you said so...It’s pretty obvious that you either have literacy issues or you just can’t comprehend. So let me explain this to you in the simplest way possible, my question was obviously directed toward those who are already attending Touro/other D.O schools at the present time, so it doesn’t even concern you. Furthermore, I never doubted anyone’s performance in the OMM class, also I never said that the COMLEX covers only OMM, I simply implied that the USMLE (which obviously does not test on OMM) is more important when it comes to applying to competitive allopathic residency programs. Next time, try to comprehend (I know it must be hard for you) what the other person is saying, before you post something that makes you look like an immature pre-med.

Hey buddy, why do you care? In four years we will all be licensed physicians. It has been discussed to nausea the compatibility of the USMLE and the COMLEX. If it worries you so much then take the USMLE and if you would like take the COMLEX. Just because the USMLE doesn't include OMM doesn't mean it is a better test, or is the crown jewel of competitive residency slots. You should take the question back to an allo forum for they will give you the bias answer you seek. Since you posted it here... :meanie:

The COMLEX is a much better exam for testing the physician's ability to care for patients.

Just because the USMLE doesn't include OMM doesn't mean it is a better test, or is the crown jewel of competitive residency slots. You should take the question back to an allo forum for they will give you the bias answer you seek. Since you posted it here... :meanie:

Why are you making false inferences and assumptions? Go back and read the my statement, I never said that USMLE is better than COMLEX or vice versa, all I’m saying is that most, if not all the top competitive residency programs prefer or most likely require you to take the USMLE, this is not my opinion, it’s a fact, if you don’t believe me contact the individual programs or ask the DO residents accepted into these programs.

The COMLEX is a much better exam for testing the physician's ability to care for patients.

I’m sure that the above statement is based on your informed opinion, BTW, you’ve taken both USMLE and COMLEX, right?

Maybe you didn't read the title to this thread? It is for the official class of 2009, now you are welcome to post here, but don't expect a warm reply if you question our school's methods. I went back and read your post... your question is "what if everyone performs poorly on a test"? Then we all perform poorly. The system is designed to help us pass. Poor grades reflect back at the school and as such they would work with us to improve them. I am not sure which forum Medicine1 got your other questions. I agree with him they are irrelevant and deceptive. We are all trying to understand where you are going with this Frank, maybe you can elaborate on your questions because it seems we have a miscommunication. And if you decide not to post again... we won't hold it against you.

You’re now changing the subject, the reason for the presence of irrelevant information on this thread is because medicine1 took my question from this (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=178660) thread and posted it on this thread. Like I mentioned before, my questions concerne the students attending Touro at the present time, not you. BTW, you are not the spokesman for this thread so avoid the phrase “we”.

Hey take it easy Frank. You came to the 2009 thread asking questions and tell a 2009 student to not respond? Your questions are very valid, but go start a new thread and title it " Attn Touro-NV c/o 2008" and hold your discussions there. And by the way DrB is one of the spokesman as he is part of class of 2009.. the name of this thread. Capiche?

Hey Guys,

I just got the e-mail on friday, and I will most definitely be joining all of you in the fall!!! I just can't believe it still. It's so surreal to me. I thought I was going to end up moving to the midwest, but heck, now it's only going to be 4 hours away! I originally had my interview invite sent out on Nov. 29th, but for some reason, it got lost in the mail and out of some strange twist of events I ended up calling them 2 months later to find out I could still visit the place; I was so amazed with the school, and it literally became my #1 choice within 5 minutes of being there. You know how a lot of people tell you that you need to find a school that's the right fit for you? Well, I kinda believed in that to some degree, but I was really worried in the beginning about getting at least one acceptance in the bag and wondering about whether or not I would like the place until afterwards. Totally different experience at NV! The curriculum is great, the school is new and beautiful, the location is awesome, and most importantly, every single person I met from the class of 2008 was so friendly and welcoming! I could tell that's the kind of environment I wanted to be in for the next four years.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting each and everyone of you! I'll probably be joining the Google Group real soon, and my family and I are thinking about heading on a trip back to Vegas in the next 1-2 or weeks to go check out the housing. I still have no idea what type of living arrangements I'm going to have, but we'll see soon enough!

PM me or e-mail me or what not. I'd be happy to talk to any one of you! I really do think we should all meet up and have a social get-together sometime before class starts though. It'd be kinda neat knowing who everyone already is on the first day!

I read on a recent thread that some people were unclear on Nevada's malpractice situation. Here is a thread (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=159472&highlight=good+news+nevada) from a few months ago about what's being done to stop this problem in Nevada.

Those are some very competitive residency programs. I would love to know how you answered some of those questions. I got 1. Hematology 2.Nephrology 3. General Surgery 4. Ob/GYN 5. Nuclear Med 6. Neurosurgery...
I am not sure how close these really are to one another in aptitude. ;)

I was thinking about oncology/hematology, and they are #9 & #19. I wonder what I said that would give me those specialties. I thought I answered that I wanted a life outside of medicine and short working hours. J/K. It was interesting though. Anyone know how many have been accepted now? When I was interviewing, I spoke to Mr. Corbman about this, and he said that ideally although they only want 100 matriculants, they will accept up to 108. I think they have approval from the AOA to do this. I have also heard talks about accepting 120 deposits, with the idea that 12 or so people generally will drop by the time the fall class starts. When I spoke to Dr. Haight at the TUCOM-MI interview, he informed me that it is impossible for them to admit anything over what they are approved for by the AOA (108, in this case), otherwise there would be some serious problems.

Elmer, good luck on your interview. I'm sure you'll do just fine. Be confident and be yourself. It's a very conversational, relaxed atmosphere. Nothing to stress about.

Wow, this thread is becoming a beast (255 posts). Now that block exams are done I can catch up on the internet. I want to share a photo of when I saw the campus for the first time, and it was after I interviewed, accepted and sent my deposit in. It was a sort a gamble, no pun intended, but in the end I am very happy where I am. I just took a look on weather.com at where I was going to go, Kirksville, and with a high of 36F low of 22F tomorrow I like where I am. It's going to be 65F here tomorrow, :), I dont think my desert Arizona blood could take the low, low temps they see. Oh yeah, and that pic of the AOA president, that's me on the left!!

Here I am with good o' Roger Corbman (IMO the best Director of Admissions you'll ever find) in the "atrium/commons area". That's me on the right (not the greatest picture but ah well)

I posted this on our google group too.
Hi everyone! I have recently purchased a two bedroom/two bath town house 5 minutes from school in Stephanie Court. It is a gated community and the place is only a couple of years old. It has a full sized washer/dryer, parking everywhere, community pool, fireplace, and I’m really excited to move in to say the least! Speaking of moving in, I will be moving the beginning of July. I am looking for a roommate, so I thought I would write a little about me so if anyone needs a roommate and thinks we may be compatible can contact me. I’m from Tucson, Arizona and am 26 years old. I went to Northern Arizona University for undergrad and have moved around the last few years before starting my life. Not so much on purpose, but we all know that this getting into med school thing can be challenging. I love sports and pretty much anything to do with sports (except nascar, but that’s another discussion whether it really is a sport):) I enjoy playing all sports and watching all sports…I hope this med school thing doesn’t get in the way of the final four (ASU sun devil fans not welcome…go wildcats, just kidding), world series, superbowl, NBA championship, and Tiger or Agassi. I currently work as a personal trainer. I have been doing this for about 5 years and really enjoy training young athletes. I run a youth athletic training program where kids from the age of 9 to 16 can come do athletic training. While in Washington, DC I had the chance to work with college and professional athletes as well and that was a great experience (except for egos). Anyways I don’t want to make this too long. I am clean, but far from anal about it. I would also like a non-smoker. Contact me if you need somewhere to live or not, I want to get to know everyone. IM address: mikesf210 email address: mikesf210@yahoo.com
Look forward to meeting you all. Michael.

Hi, I am a first year Dental student at USC, but have a house in Henderson that I am going to rent out in July (this is my personal home, so it is in nice shape). It is a 3bed/2bath 1500 square foot house with 2 car garage. the master suite is large and one of the bedroom's has it's own private entrance. Rent would be $1300/month. ( although I may be interested in selling it as well). It has a 2 car garage and fenced rear yard with grass. The house was built in 2001. Send me a private message if you are interested or would like to take a look at the house some weekend.

The house is on Pacific Cascades drive, which is near Paseo Verde & Gibson, just south of campus.

P.S.
For a cheap place to excercise and swim, I go the the Henderson Multigenerational Center on Green Valley Parkway. Its a cool place, membership is like $12/per month, and even cheaper if you purchase a yearly or 6 month pass. It is the cheapest and closest gym that I know of near Touro Univ, Although they are building a Gold's Gym at Stephanie and I-215.

If one train leaves New York at 6:53pm on Thursday and another leaves from San Francisco at 10:26am Friday, there is a strong southern wind and a low front coming in from the north, then the train from New York has to make a stop to pick up some eggs in Nebraska, but doesn't get the full dozen so it has to move to Colorado to get the rest and the train from San Francisco has two dogs, one named scruffy and the other fluffy, how much change does each conductor have in their right pocket?

No, that one didn't come up, but you should read the interview feedback forum... ;)

You can find it on the Dean's Message at TU-Nevada's website.
http://www.tucom.edu/nv/tunv.html
Dr. Forman wrote the following:

'Orientation for the class of 2009 will begin on Monday, August 8th at 8 A.M. and end on Wednesday, August 10th. It is a requirement that all students attend this orientation. Formal classes begin on Thursday, August 11th. I am planning to have a "White Coat Ceremony" on either Sunday, October 9th or 16th. You will be notified in the near future of the final date. This ceremony traditionally serves as a right of passage from neophyte to clinician. Some schools celebrate this event at the completion of the 2nd year of medical school but I favor doing it earlier. It is a wonderful experience to share with your family.'

EZB, when we get the list of accepted students, I suppose we will match you up and hook you up.

I will spread the word in our group that there are people who want in.

Our school is really growing! We will have nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech pathology, physician assistant, and osteopathic medical students attending Touro University-Nevada. That is really cool that Touro University-Nevada will have Dr. Crovetti around as well!
I was really hoping Touro University-Nevada would join UNLV to start a Pharm.D program, but their were politics and money involved.
I cannot wait to see what other things are in store for TU-Nevada.

I know that the UNLV dental students already go to Touro for specific lessons. That is really cool that Touro University-Nevada will have Dr. Corvetti around as well!

UNLV students go to Touro for specific lessons? I didn't know that! The only time I remember UNLV students visiting the campus was an optional meet and greet to let them visit our anatomy lab and to begin communications between the schools...

Perhaps I was just hearing things. I know in Dr Forman's Message, he wrote the following, "[TU-Nevada's] other partnerships are with the University Southern Nevada College of Pharmacy and UNLV's School of Dentistry."

I also spoke to a UNLV Dental student, and she told me that they would participate and or receive some instruction at Touro University.

I may be dead wrong.
I apologize if I am.
Thanks for the input Brian

From what I understand from speaking with the anatomy department is that there have been talks of perhaps something going on here at TUNCOM Dept. of Anatomy and UNLV Dental. Granted, this was a while ago and I do not know what has come of it. Unless it has been formally announced from school administration, it is just rumor and/or still in the planning stage.

In this message you use the word "would" which infers a potential or future activity. Dean Forman refers to partnerships with several schools, but he, nor anyone I have talked to has said anything to the effect of "I know that the UNLV dental students already go to Touro for specific lessons." I beleive that Student Doctor box29 has correctly assessed the situation when he says that "Unless it has been formally announced from school administration, it is just rumor and/or still in the planning stage."

I love my school more than anything, but I don't like it when misinformation is provided about my school, even though it may or may not increase its reputation.

That's it.

So I take it you are all chatting on the list serve...anyhoo, were you able to purchase a house, townhouse, or condo?

Well, its a sad, sad story...

I was in escrow for a condo, but within the last two weeks it went under litigation and my lender pulled out. I had already made plans to move (notice at work, notice at my apartment) within a few weeks I had to move... so I ended up renting.

Not so bad, I am at Timerlake, its nice here....

Just chillin for the rest of the summer!

I hope everyone is staying nice and cool indoors, or with the air conditioning on here in Vegas and Henderson, Nevada!!!

This heat is killer. I guess we are already reaching record highs!

Hmmm...my car said 113 degrees on Sunday. It is going to get worse folks. Roger is going to have an idea of the wait list ranking etc. in early June. Keep your fingers crossed for me. :luck: He said that 104 have paid both deposits so far. But that maybe 20-30 will come off the waitlist. I can't imagine anyone losing both deposits at this stage. What do you guys think? I'm a nervous wreck with only a few months left to go. :scared:

Hello All!

I just received an acceptance to Touro - Nevada in the mail yesterday! Class of 2005 here I come! (notified by email last Friday)

I have been reading the SDN message boards for some time now, but just signed up for an account today. My google groups account is still pending, but I hope to start getting caught up and posting there soon.

My elation and excitement at finally receiving an acceptance is starting to settle in, but is gradually being replaced by the sheer panic of realizing how much I have to do in the next couple of months.

I will obviously be sending in my deposit, and the other person that was accepted in my email will be accepting also. So for those who are counting, add two to the class size.

Congrats to the accepted and good luck to the waiting! Thanks for the donation from those who change schools after paying the deposits. :p

Marianne11, are you going to have to reapply in June or are you just waiting?

HopperAZ, congrats again, you are going to have a lot to read on google...

Well if I don't get off the waitlist, I will be considered for early decision in August. I plan to retake the MCAT in that case and re-apply if I don't get in. I'm going to start the re-app process in July just in case. :)
