Hi, I will finish my undergraduate studies this year, and I am currently in the process of applying to med schools. I know i might be jumping the gun a little bit, but i've always thought that if i went in to medicine that orhtopaedics would be the field that would interest me most. My question to current orthos is this - Were you guys good at carpentry, building things, etc before you went into orthopaedic residency, or is this a skill that can be learned along the way, just like any other class?

I say this because the actual field of orthopadics fascinates me and it would be a dream job for me, but i'm not by any means a carpenter at the moment.

Any info would be appreciated

My vote is to first worry about getting into medical school, and then--once in--to worry about your grades in medical school. If your USMLE scores and grades are up to snuff, then you might be able to consider orthopaedics. The competition does not stop with undergrad, my friend. That said, it's good to have some idea of what you like, but, at the same time, be sure to get the full experience of every rotation.
