Hey guys - I was thinking about getting a masters in physiology before pharm school.. good idea or bad? I'm applying to both programs right now but I have a better chance getting into the master's program than rx school. It's a 2 year program and I was wondering if it was a good idea to give up 2 years or to just take some upper division classes and reapply next fall.

How much more easier is it to get accepted into a Master's program?...any stats?

Well I remember I attended a workshop for students that wanted to go to Med School and I think they said it would be better to do a post bacc program rather than get a masters.

Post Bacc is usually for a student who has not completed the required prereqs. MS degrees are for students who completed the prereqs but have lower stats and want to beef up their application with better grades in graduate level programs. This is in general and applies to the med school world.

I would say if chem is your weak spot do a master's in pharm chem, pharmacology, or something of that nature. If Bio is your weak spot do a master's in biomed or physio if you desire or just apply widely and take a spot where you get accepted.

Well I was thinking a postbacc would be better than a Masters if someones GPA was really low b/c most schools just look at your performance in your prereqs when granting interviews. Getting a Masters would enhance your application but if you're undergrad GPA is really low I doubt it would help.

oh! this is some great info - thanks for the help! my stats are kinda low.. definitely not as impressive as some of the applicants on this forum - gchem is actually my sore spot but i was looking fwd to applying for a masters in physio. but would a post bacc help if i've done all the pre-reqs? i got 2 C's in g-chem and did well on the 3rd gchem class... :confused:

I would suggest emailing maybe 2 or 3 pharmacy schools that you really want to attend and ask their opinion regarding this subject. I think it would give you piece of mind b/c it's really hard to say what schools actually look at in those situations.
