Lexian 11-10-2004, 08:50 PM I'm Vietnamese, but I am a first year pharmacy student. There are quite a few here that are also vietnamese (born in Vietnam and become US citizens) at UCSF, and a few of us are thinking about coming over to Vietnam for a medical exchange program for a summer. One of my friends did that in undergrad and said it was the experience that turned him to pharmacy.
bourvier 11-11-2004, 11:33 PM Its so nice to know all of you. My name is Thảo- Im sure that you can understand and pronoun my name :o . Im 22 years old and in the 6th year in medicine school. Im in the last year in the Uni, and after graduation I'll become a general doctor.
If I wanna be a specialist , I must pass some exams. and these exam are very difficulf. But I hope i will pass :D .

DrHopeless 11-13-2004, 12:30 AM Well I am still a third year premed..... Left VN when I was 12. I must agree, I like to visit VN (VN girls are HOT! ), but I would hate to deal with the gov.
Just wondering, are you require to learn english in VN (at the least in med school). It kinda started when I left, but that was in 5 or 6 grade.

We are required to study foreign language, not only English, but also French and Russian, You can choose, and sometime you can learn more than one foreign languages, in some special classes. And in the Uni, of course, you must learn a foreign language, and you have to pass the exams. I choose to study French in the Uni, and I have studied English in highschool.

After 6 years, I will become a general doctor, not like you, you need 8 years : 4 years in PreMed and 4 years in Med Uni. Is it right ? I can apply for resident doctor, and more 3-4 years to work and study in the hospital like you. Right ?

Danang is a small city, but I like it. I love My Khe beach. It is amazing. Another of my favorite places in Danang is a small seafood restaurant called, Ba Thoi. I've had some of the best meals ever at that place. Mmmmm.... But what I miss the most about Danang is the people. I have many friends there that were incredibly kind and generous to me during the time that I lived and worked there. :)

Dogsnout 11-15-2004, 08:29 AM I am wondering on how the quality of medical education is over in vietnam. I'm guessing that the focus is more on clinical aspect of medicine vs a balance between basic sciences and clinical medicine. In the US model of the medical school curriculum, for example, in Pathology, the Robbins book is considered the "bible" of pathology and almost every medical school uses that book as well as have PHD's who have alot of background in the pathology field as well as teaching it. Most students have the necessary materials to read up and learn on their own as well as lectures, but I'm wondering over in VN, what kind of textbooks are used, what kind of professors are teaching the course, and how much emphasis is placed on the basic sciences? Since it is a 3rd world country, I wonder how much a student can learn with such limited resources?

Hi Dogsnout,
Yes, Việt Nam is a 3rd country. And we dont have much resources as most students in the USA or the European countries. The focus of our trainning in the Uni is praticians, may be mot a clinician or a physician. There a bit different of these words ? It means we are the community doctor, after graduation, we come back to work in the community, in the public medical point of a small area. We dont have right to open a private clinical, or harly applying for a job in a hospital. If you want to work in the provine's hospital you must study the post-graduated degree.
We study basic sciences in the first two years, and practice at the Uni's labors. The textbook for these basic sciences is written by the Professor of the Uni. , but we are encourage to research in the foreign language if we can, for example, the A.C. Guyton's text book of Physiology, the ANderson's textbook of Pathology.. In Việt Nam, its easy to find foreign textbooks but they r very expensive, so we can make a photo of them from the Uni's library.
We started clinical practice in the 3rd year, and everyday, we must go to the hospital to practice with the patients. We have right to talk, to exam the patients, and do some small procedures in the patients for example injection, spinal ponction...In the last year, we can note in the profile, give the orders in the profile (under the check of the doctors, of course :) ). We also can participate in a operation when we practice the Sugery suject.
In Việt NAm, there r two big medical Uni, one in H? Nội, the capital, one in Hồ Ch? Minh city, mine. Each Uni writes their own textbook for the teaching. But the students in this Uni can use text of the other Uni. Its Okay, no objection from the teachers. In internal medicine, most the students read the Harrison's and Cecil's Textbook, we also read the Washington's for the therapeutic. We can read it in the Uni library, a few students can buy them :( . I think you also use these book. :) And we can find more resource in Internet, for exam I often browse the New England Journal of Medicine (http://www.nejm.org )and the Britist Journal of Medicine(http://www.bmj.com/ ). These site give the Việtnamese the sposor, and we access for free.
Ofcourse the quality of madical trainning int ViệtNam is lower in the USA and the Europe, but I think not much, especial in the residency training, we have much clinical experients, i think so. But, the disadvantages of us is foreign languages. WE r trying to improve it. :).
I will tell you more about my study in VN.
Regards.
bourvier 11-17-2004, 05:21 AM Wow, I didn't know we have this many Vnamese in this forum. I left Saigon when I was almost 21. Spent a few years (DD91DT1) at DHBK TpHCM (Phu Tho prior 75). I think they changed the name now. I've been back there several times. As always, I miss Saigon. Since when did they combine the two universities (Y and Duoc)? I thought those were separate. My two sis were graduated from DH Y Khoa TpHCM (not the one on Nguyen Tri Phuong). BTW, I'm a pre-dent student.
Hi Luder98.
How long have you left ViệtNAm ? DD91 is your class code ? And I guess you used to be in the Điện tử 91. Hehe, is it right, I have friends in the DD99. :D.
ĐHBK is still the name of your Uni. You right when you think its name have change,(into Đại Học Kỹ Thuật (technic Uni), but after the objection from the students, your Uni got the old name about 3-4 years ago.
There only a Uni named ĐH Y dược tp HCM, there is no combination and it locate in Hồng B?ng street (H?ng Vương before). And there is also a medicine college, the name is Trung T?m Đ?o Tạo v? bồi dưỡng C?n Bộ Y tế tp HCM (I dont know how to translate in English :D ), in Nguyễn Tri Phương street.

Sorry for my absent for a long time. Im praticing in Pediatric in the hospital. Its so tire, many things to learn, it takes a lot of time. Is there any one in this forum like pediatric ? I like children but I cant like pediatric :o . It seems very difficult !!! Taking the examination in a child so tired and complex.
You right when you have suspicion about the quality of medical training in Viet Nam. I agree with you. I know that we need many years to catch the high qualification of the USA's and European's training. Sad for 5 minutes !!!! .
We have a room with 60-70 cadavers for pratice anatomy. This is the first med subject of med students. And there is a long list of people who wanna devote their cadavers for medicine after dying.
We study the fundamental science as Math, Physic, Chemistry, Bio, ... and basic sciences as Anatomy, pathology, pathophysiology, histology, Bio-chemistry, physiology, parasitology, micrology..
In the 3rd year, we start studying the special subject as Internal Med, Genaral Surgery, pEdiatric surgery, Nerology, Neuro surgery,... A lot of subject. i think we have to study all. So we dont have much time to research more. We only study the basic of each subject, except the 4 main subject : Internal med, General Surgery, women's health, and pediatric. In the last year, I have to study only these four subject. But its so hard !!!
Chickenfeet720 12-19-2004, 08:44 AM I'm a Vietnamese prospective student in the midwest...just want to give a shout out to all Vietnamese brothers and sisters from a different mother out there conquering the medical field...hihi...actually, I suppose to be in med school this year, but my lazy butt doesn't want to start...hihi...I defer a year to chill, travel...hihi living the good life before my life will be deprived...I'm going back to VN in January....it's been 14 years...I will probably feel like being "2 lua" going back there...

ctlst5 02-23-2005, 11:44 PM Hi everyone,
I'm a 4th year from California and starting my Emergency Medicine residency in June this year. I left Saigon when I was 5 and ended up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for 16 years. Dont ask me why...but found my way to California for medical school. woohoo! ;)
Too bad now i will be leaving again but this time to Chicago for 4 years. :(
I did an elective Pediatrics rotation in Vietnam last November that was phenomenal! It was sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics and through University of California - Irvine. I spent 2 weeks helping teach ACLS and PALS at Cho Ray Hospital and Ho Chi Minh University Medical School. We then went to Lang Son Province for 2 weeks and performed over 65 cleft palate and strabismus repairs. I got to do all the pediatric intubations I wanted. I also got very comfortable using Anesthetic meds like midazolam, propofol, etc and learned all about fluid management. It was one of the best rotations I've done in medical school. Best of all I met a lot of great new friends - other med students, surgeons, pediatricians, EM docs, volunteers from all over.
If you are interested. Here is the website.

hey bourvier,
question:
1) why do people in Vietnam want to donate themselves to the medicine. i dont think many people here in the US do. i recall that our school purchased cadavers through the city.
2) what is going on with the chicken flu over there. I was planning on visiting saigon and thailand after i finished my last rotation in April but with that going on over there i may plan somewhere else.
thanks,
Randy

Im a medical student in VietNam !!!!!!!!!!! :)
chemist199 02-24-2005, 12:11 PM Hello, I am also Vietnamese. I am going to do my family medicine residency in June 2005. I would like to do a geriatric fellowship in future. I hope to be able to practice in Vietnam after I pay back my loans and have some capital. I'm going to visit Vietnam in May, so excited about this trip (first trip back in 22 years!! ). Good to know everyone here! Let's form a vietnamese gang!!
txmhn 02-24-2005, 08:20 PM Hello all,
I'm currently a senior U.S. medical student. I will start my residency in General Surgery this coming June 2005. I will be visiting Saigon, Vietnam this coming March 2005 and will be staying until the middle of May 2005. Would love to visit and see what the state of medical education in Vietnam is like if any medical students in Vietnam are interested. Just let me know.
confuse 02-25-2005, 01:53 AM Hello all,
I didn't realize that Vietnamese medical students browse through this forum. Nice to meet you all. I left Saigon in 92 and came to NC. I am currently in CA finishing up my undergraduate career. I am a hopeful applicant in this cycle. I had the opportunity to travel extensively in VN in 02 and taught English at Hue College of Science that summer. I fell in love with the country, especially the people there. I miss my friends in Hue and my extended family in Saigon and hope to go back this summer. Keeping my fingers crossed. I am very curious to learn about the medical training in VN. Question: Is there currently alot of motivation for Vietnamese students to enter the medical profession over there? How do medical students get matched for their residency? Are they forced to work in the rural or underserved area? The reason I asked is because I have heard many horror stories about medical students quitting their professsion because the government would assign them to posts in the countryside where they practically have no means of living.
Another medical exchange project for those on the west coast: http://www.stanford.edu/group/vnmp/
Hello everyone,
I was surprised that there's a Vietnamese forum here, & that's the reason why I register this nick :D . Normally I just read info on pre-pharm forum & then ...disappear... Anyway, nice to meet u all.
Vietnam, esp Hue... hic...miss so much. If I can get into pharm school this yr, I'll probably go back there this summer. Otherwise, stay here & wait for next yr, next next yr ... or who knows :(
I heard VN has changed a lot even though I just left VN 3.5 yr ago. I'm glad that VN is getting much better & better  My major is pharm, but it's interesting to know the differences in med education b/w VN and here.
bamboo5280 03-20-2005, 01:07 PM Omigod, I'm so happy to find this thread. I'm a MS1 @ the University of Colorado School of Medicine. I've been browsing through this forum for a while but I didn't realized that there are other vietnamese students in here also.
Even though I'm only a first year student, I'm looking into doing a possible clinical rotation in Vietnam this summer. I'd love to meet up with anybody who might be in Vietnam from the end of May to Mid-July. I'm planning on doing lots of biking and potential rocking climbing around Da Lat and Ha Long. I don't know that many people in Vietnam so I would love to make some new friends.

Any thoughts on why people are content with a communist regime that executed more people the year after Saigon fell than the battle deaths of the combined ENTIRE course of the Vietnam war? Im sure piles of human skulls make for an interesting tourist attraction, but it seems a bit cruel....

LocutusofBorg 09-26-2006, 02:11 PM hey I am not Vietnamese, but no thanks to my roommate, I am officially addicted to Nuoc Mam!
In response to LA doc, I think every country is sitting on a whole bunch of human skulls. We, Americans, have exterminated thousands of American Indians, suffocated in transit countless African slaves (and killed a whole bunch more when they got here), and don't even get me started on all the people that die needlessly today because the working uninsured poor and middle class are not getting basic health coverage, the way they do in nearly all other first-world countries. Nonetheless, i love the US, I am proud to be an American, and I don't blame anyone for feeling the same way about their country. It takes a lot more than a nasty history to make one question their national identity...

Hey guys, This is such a great forum, let's keep it going. This is an off topic question but I have a cousin who is finishing up her last year at Saigon school of medicine and pharmacy and she is very interested to travel here to have some perspectives on the US medical education and then go back to Vietnam to practice her profession. Does any of you guys know if there is such a program that allowing doctors from Vietnam to come here, study or observe for a few months so they can have another perspective in the medical profession that are offered here. Your opinions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I know that New York State can give a temporary license to practice medicine to M.D's regardless of citizenship/residency status, as long as they agree to work in a "high need" area. I think I read this somewhere on the New York State Medical Boards website.

Thanks for replying. It's sound great but she doesn't want to work here. She just want to come here, study or observe for a couple of months then go back.

As long as you graduated from:
Hanoi Medical School
Hue Medical School
Medical and Pharmaceutical University of Ho Chi Minh City
University Center of Health Professionals of Ho Chi Minh City
University of Saigon Faculty of Medicine
You should be fine in most, if not all 50 states, including California. However, you would need to take the American Boards (USMLE), TOEFL (english exam), and attend residency training in the US in order to become a practicing physician here.
duchien 11-27-2006, 11:12 AM Thanks lotusofBorg. Can I ask what is your professional background? are you in U.S. currently?
CatsandCradles 12-08-2006, 07:56 PM Osteopaths have full practice rights in Vietnam I heard. Any Viets who are in osteopathy?

vancouver 12-24-2006, 04:17 AM Wow, I have never seen so many smart Vietnamese students in the same room before. For those who came here when you were like >16 and got into professional school-How do you do it without knowing very much English when you got here? You guys must be extremely smart. For you guys in Vietnam medical school as well, because Vietnam University is extremely competitive. I haven't been back in Vietnam in a decade but I heard it has changed drastically as well.
Good luck to all.

kelvin81 01-06-2007, 04:04 AM hello all,
I am so stoked to read this thread. I came here when I was 20 and I am going to med school in august 2007 ( I am 25 now). So far, I got in Creighton and NYMC. By the way, I really like the idea of going back to Vietnam for one elective rotation. Anyone with me on this? We should plan ahead .LOL
Vietomatic 01-22-2007, 11:02 PM Hi all! I'm an American-born Vietnamese 4th year med student who is going to do a 1-month elective in Saigon. It will be my first time in Vietnam.
I will be there Jan 29 through Feb 21, 2007. I'm pretty excited, but a little nervous. My Vietnamese is OK, but I will need considerable help, especially when it comes to medical terminology! Hopefully the medical students there will help me out. :)

Don100 02-06-2007, 10:26 AM Hi guys! I'm glad to find this VN forum. Here is my question:
I know that it doesn't matter what to choose your undergrad major for applying to med school. Since I haven't had my BS degree yet, is it good idea to take Nursing route(ADN-->BSN) ---> Med school? because when choosing medical field as the future career so get BS degree(to qualify for applying med school)working as a nurse to get clinical experience for my application later.
Thanks for your answers.
Don.

cangsaigon 02-07-2007, 10:44 AM Hi Don, you can check on amcas website for stats; numbers of nurses applying to meds school are low; when they applied the percentage accepted is also low. My guess is that it is hard to get a high gpa in nursing school. Medschool admission is all about gpa and mcat.
cangsaigon 02-07-2007, 10:50 AM Hello Thay Cuongoc, I'm currently a resident in family medicine in usa. I see a good number of vietnamese patients, most of them had bcg vacination. Are they still giving that in Vietnam? if yes if you can provide the reason? If it stopped can you provide the year it stopped. Thanks so much.

well, is it any true ? Let s post something about yourself and your association as well...long to hear about that!
Well as posted above, it is not that impossible for V medical students to enter residency in the states after they finish the first 6 year medical education in VN. Indeed you guys in V med schools have the equal opportunity as Indian, european students or ones from anywhere else in the world...providing you finish the ECFMG requirements and become certified ( in VNese, let s translate a little bit, thi bằng BS tương đương và được công nhận )
It s also true that international medical garaduates in the US are much more than what people often think about , the ratio being 1/4...
BTW, i m not in the state nor have i ever been there but thinking ab' US lights me up. Hope to have some friends there.
to all : I must agree that Viets are really friendly and enthusiastic. So, anyone here deciding to take a rotation in Vn should consider the Vnese medical terminology difficulty but with the help from doctors ( who can understand Eng much better ) and students there ( who may do whatever to help you ), it is not that hard and boring. Hope you guys have a good time in Vn. Enjoy food, the beach and many untold never-heard experience and entertainment there or you ll reget for the wholly life. I am not in VN currently but i hope to come back home in the summer and for some more words, i am a med student from SG too. SG is really interesting once you have a friend there to take you around...
Let s talk about Vietnam ( the country itself) and VNese and do not lead this forum far toward any political debates coz it s from the beginning a clean and nice topic of Saigonese medical students...
