View Full Version : lack of responses
Oranit 11-11-2004, 10:08 AM It has been about 1 month since my application was submitted in full and 1.5 weeks since the deans letter went out and I still haven't heard from about 2/3 of the programs I applied to. Should I be worried? do programs just not reply if not interested? Can people who went through the match before please let me know in general when programs finish sending out interviews.
Thanks
unless you get a rejection, you are still in the game. looking at last year's thread, people were still getting interviews in december. just relax, and you should hear more (good or bad) in the coming weeks.

would it be a waste of money to apply to more programs right now? I am in the same boat, I think I applied to too little community programs. What do you all think?
Oranit 11-11-2004, 06:05 PM I don't know if it well help but it can't hurt, I just went into panic mode and applied to 30 more programs. Blew the bank account, but hey its my future on the line.
sunflower2020 11-11-2004, 06:36 PM how many programs did you apply to originally? Did you get any interviews at all?
I got two interviews and about six rejections so far, all in this week. Most of the rejections were from big universities.
brendang 11-11-2004, 06:44 PM i originally applied to 60 IM cat programs, mostly throughout the northeast... started hearing from programs in late sept-early oct... got 5-6 interviews right off and then received 15!!! straight rejections... don't know if my being canadian has anything to do with it, but most (80-90%) were from community programs in nyc, while the 7 interviews i have are all university programs... funny, i applied to ophtho to simply go fishing, didn't really expect much. i've gotten 3 interviews so far (15 rejections, but i applied to ANOTHER 50 programs) for ophtho, yet sh*#holes like maimonides and harlem hospital (all were SUPPOSED to be safety programs) rejected me for IM... but as far as my IM applications, i too hit the panic button and applied to 12 more yesterday... still haven't heard from 2/3 of them... let's see what happens this week... seems like a lot of my classmates are in the same boat as us...
ya, applied to 30, yes from 5, no from 4, not a peep from the rest of them...
kinetic redux 11-12-2004, 11:07 AM I've thought about this circumstance (because I'm in it). Here's my conclusion. The answer lies in where the programs are in their interview schedule. In other words, if the programs have handed out all of their interviews, you're up the creek even if you apply to 500 new programs. I tend to think that most programs hand out interviews to their "first-tier applicants" before the Dean's Letter even goes out. Yes, yes, I know they say that places don't make up their minds until after Nov. 1, but we all know lots of people who got interviews before the Dean's Letter. After that ruckus has cooled off, the Dean's Letter goes out and they give out their "second-tier interviews" to a bunch of other people. At that point, a lot of people will have to turn down at least SOME interviews and they fill in the rest with their "third-tier interviews." I think they are in this last group right about now. I doubt that applying to a lot of places at this point would change anything.
brendang 11-12-2004, 11:24 AM that idea really does make a lot of sense, however, i really doubt that programs are really that systematic as far as interviewing... it seems as though there really is no rhyme or reason as far as who they invite, or when they do it... many of my friends, as i had previously mentioned, are in the same boat as me (still waiting from 30-40 programs)... i have recently called up some 20 or so programs inquiring about the "status" of of my application. most said that they were still in the process of reviewing applications and that i should expect to hear from them in the next couple of weeks; particularily the university programs... so hold tight, and try not to freak out too much... and yes, i'm still checking my email every hour on my cell phone.
kinetic redux 11-12-2004, 11:29 AM No offense, but by being Canadian you're in FMG status, which is probably why you haven't heard from most of those programs. FMGs usually get the last few interviews.

Ya I'd say this makes a lot of sense. I've gotten a pretty good amount of inteviews but I've also gotten about 5 emails basically saying I didnt make the first cut but I am still being considered for a possible interview at a later date.
mikegoal 11-12-2004, 02:53 PM I dont believe that canadians are considered fmgs
still haven't heard from like 25 out of 36 programs.
anyone else in the same boat?

i guess its just me :(

no It's not just you, I have applied to 59 programs, got about 7 interviews and 10 official rejections nothing from the rest. I don't know if this is it or what.
Any opinions??
irlandesa 12-04-2004, 06:56 PM I have heard from most of the programs I applied to, but have not heard a peep from Sinai, BIDMC, or UConn. I kind of understand places like Mt. Sinai and BID taking their time b/c of the prestige, but UConn? Not that I really want to go to UConn, but to keep someone hanging like that is really rude, if you're going to reject me, just send the e-mail already. And yes, I'm a US grad who according to the theory on here, was in the "first tier" for Brown-RIH, Dartmouth, GWU, Rochester, and BU, so UConn makes no sense.
Does anyone know if BIDMC hands out rejection e-mails?

im guessing this means we are the bottom of the "acceptable" applicants list. i'm sure the programs have given out interviews. maybe they dont want to outright reject us until they have gotten a comfortable number of interviews.
but its weird because some of the programs i got interviews at i would have thought would be much more competitive than alot of the programs i haven't heard from. i haven't heard from community programs that barely filled half their slots last year while i've been interviewed by some really nice large university affiliated community programs.
seems like there isn't much rhyme or reason to it.
im wondering how many interviews i need to be "safe" in matching someplace.

Most people agree that if you rank 10 programs your chances are pretty good(I've heard ranking 10 puts you in the 90 percentile for matching[no quotable sources though]). Of course this is no guarantee...you can theoretically match with just 1 interview and go UNmatched with 50 interviews!
