-The area around campus is in an industrial area, and not too fun at night
-No places around there to eat or shop or get groceries, unless you like McDonald's every day
-Lots of Brown Recluse Spiders & other scary critters
-Next door to government project housing
-$100 more a month than very similar apartments just a few miles south (they arein a less expensive area that has much more to offer, and is in a much more desireable area)

-PM me for other apartment ideas --> I had to do all the research on apartments myself, and decided to live in a more desirable area

osudoc makes some good points. But really, the brown recluses leave me alone. I just feed them a puppy every now and then and they let me live.

However, im lazy and prefer not to commute. Kinda nice to be able to walk back over for lunch. My large bedroom is 525. I think. I prepaid my rent, but that figure seems right.

My large 1 bedroom has the same square footage, and the amenities in the apartment are the same. I pay $399 a month.

The Con is that I drive 7-10 minutes to get to school & Have to bring my lunch, buy it in the cafeteria, or drive 5 miles away to get something good.
The Pro is that I have every gas station, grocery store (Super Wal-Mart), fast food restaurant, and regular restaurant that I really want within walking distance, and I also have several banks and the post office.

Hi! I was accepted to OSU last week. I was very impressed with the campus and everyone seems super friendly!

I have a couple of questions. Does anyone commute from any sort of distance (say 30 miles or more)? What is the traffic like in the morning in Tulsa?
Another question (don't want to annoy anyone, but I want to know). Is the student body really politically conservative? I've lived in the south now for several months and I've felt really isolated about political/social issues here. Is it any different in Tulsa?

DrMom
12-07-2004, 05:53 PM
Tulsa is largely conservative, but nothing exclusive. I'd say the same for the med school.

Most people don't commute any great distance, but there are some. Are you looking for something to rent? I'd be glad to give my $0.02 on drives to Tulsa from various communities.

I drive 10 miles to school everyday, and it takes me about 10 minutes to get to class. There are several people who live in BA, and I know of at least one that lives in Mannford.

As for political conservatism, there are some very liberal students in our class and there are clubs on campus that support those issues if you are interested.

I'll second the congrats and the orders to RELAX while you can. No amount of what you view as preparation will get you ready for first year, so just enjoy your freedom while you have it! You'll have plenty of cause to study once you get here; we promise!

Thanks for the tips... I will probably do some of both... My wife and I have a vacation planed for July... And I will still work at the hospital lab in Stillwater until July so I have time while I am waiting for work to look over some anatomy stuff... Nothing hard core but just reveiw what I've already had... How much free time after classes and studying does a first year have? Is there any? My wife and I have discussed a date night. Do you guys have any ideas?

You'll definitely have time for a date night. In fact, you should make time, even if you don't feel you have enough. Not during finals week, mind you, but just about every other week. Date night is one of the few things that have kept my wife and I sane this year so far.
As for free time in general, you really have as much as you want. You may not pass your classes, but it is up to you. Different people have different needs as far as dedicated study time is concerned. I'd say, hit the books like a madman for the first round of tests, and see where you stand. DON'T do what I did and take it easy for the first round of tests to get a feel for the professors. Man, was that bad hole to dig out of! I passed every one of the first exams but one, but I could have done SOOOOOOO much better. Hope this helps to answer your questions.

You have to make time, but you'll have time for a date night, now, 2nd semester of 1st year is a differnt story, but again, you must make time for your wife and your sanity. if you insist on studying, buy Chung's board review book for anatomy and get the histology book they use, but I really don't see how that will help unless you can learn all of the information down pat,

Hi Ya'll! Thanks for the great time at Admitted Student Day!! Now to the juicy stuff! My husband and I are relocating to Owasso to be alot closer to school this August, and as a result we are selling our home in Beggs, buying a newer, bigger house so that our three growing children won't become closet children. Also, we need to replace our family car, and because I am starting med school, I wont be able to work any more. I've heard from a couple of people there, but I just want to be reassured by the general consensus, will I be able to get enough money in school loans to make it, or do I start looking at Owasso shanties? Let me know your experiences in getting extra moolah at OSU so that I can rest easy or start looking for a beat-up Toyota!!

it all depends on how much debt you wish to go into, I just bought a 04 Monte carlo with school loans, but I shopped around and got a smoking deal on it. Getting loans isn't a problem, unless you have bad credit

Our credit is pretty good, actually. We own both of our cars, have very little credit card debt and usually pay it off within a month or two, and my husband makes great money. Our problem is, the housing in the Tulsa area is alot more expensive than in Beggs. Our house in Beggs, which we are selling for $86K is equivalent to approx $125K in Owasso, and we are already needing a bigger house bcs we have lived here for 6 yrs and had 2 children since we moved in! The cost of daycare in Owasso is about $100/mo more per child ($300/mo altogether) and that is at the least expensive place we have found (not very comforting to be the least expensive, either!) We are pretty frugal people and dont live extravagantly, but we will need at least enough to continue our current way of life, which means at least $25K for the living expense part of the loans due to the increased cost of living. Is this do-able or am I in deep trouble? LOL. I guess this is the curse of the nontraditional med student!

You'll want to talk with Sandra Hale and see if you guys can develop a budget to help with acquiring the loans.

good school districts that meet your criteria include Jenks, Union (which is partially in Tulsa & partially in Broken Arrow), Broken Arrow (some schools in this dist are better than others), and Owasso.

It also Greatly depends on how close you really want to be to the school and how much you have to spend....

There are great Tulsa Schools also, such as Elliot (36th btw Peoria and Utica) or Eisenhower (incredibly hard to get into unless u live in the neighborhood, but a fantastic magnet school)

Good Luck

My son went to Union and I have good things to say about it. I went to BA, Jenks, and Tulsa and would suggest Jenks for the second choice. There is a more parental money in the Jenks district, sometimes yielding snotty kids. But you can find that anywhere, if you look hard enough . Both have great tax bases: Union (mall and shopping corridor) and Jenks (powerplant).

If I get in the upcoming class, we will go back to Union. Be careful about the traffic situation in south and southeast Tulsa. There is no good way to downtown without major congestion or tolls. If you can get to the BA Expressway (51), the rest is not too bad since they widened it.

So count me in to the class of 2009! I was accepted in January but have been weighing all the options for a few months now. I guess I always knew this is where I'd be at the end of all this. It has just seemed like the right choice ever since I visited OSU. It was a little hard to let go of some other schools, but now its time to leave all that behind and move to Oklahoma. My wife is flying out there this next week to audition for the Fine Arts program at OSU Stillwater. So here's a shout out to all my new classmates!

I don't know what the number is, but even if technically every seat is filled at this point, there is a lot of turnover between now and August. They'll be pulling quite a few off of the waitlist *after* the class is technically full.

In my class, for example, something like 6 people interviewed on the very last day of interviews.

Wow, that's great to hear. I may have picked the last interview date (4/1) when offered the whole week. Interviewing on April Fool's Day . I might have been wondering if they had picked this day! Just imagine showing up with your suit on and the admissions department was MIA.

I've always been comfortable being different in a crowd. When racing motorcross, I used the number 13. On the first day of freshman class, a psych professor mentioned that people sitting in the back row usually made F's. So guess where I sat while earning my A that semester:thumbup:? Just call me a closet rebel. Different but centrist / conservative.

Not very stressed. The longer you are in medical school, the more acustomed to the pace you get. As the great Dr. Paul Evans once said to my class, "at first it feels like trying to drink from a fire hose, but eventually you learn to surf the waves."

When I spoke w/ admission last Tuesday, they had an open seat in the process of being filled from the waitlist. I don't know how fast they move to fill newly opened slots. I'm sure they open up all the time, with most around 5/15 since that is a common deadline date.

Come the end of May, they make another cut. They will cut the waitlist down to the FINAL WAITLIST. This is where many seats come from. I know of probably 10 ppl in our class that got in during the second week of june or so, and 1 that got in the week before orientation in august. But at the beginning of June they cut again, and the ppl left on the FINAL list are at a decent chance of getting in. GOOD LUCK to all on the waitlist..

Hmm, thanks on the TB info. As far as apartments go, there are some cool places just south of 15th between Peoria and Lewis. They're a little harder to find--mainly bigger houses that have been converted into apartment units scattered throughout an older/historic neighborhood. (Not terribly hard to find though as they usually have renting info in front of the building.) One of my friends lives around there and its really nice--totally renovated, hardwood floors, and a cool part of town. I have another friend looking at a one bedroom condo a block east of 38th and Peoria. I think they are called the Shannonwood Condominiums? Anyway, they dont have quite the unique personality, but again, are in a pretty cool part of town (Brookside) and are renting for $525/1br and $575/2br. Smith and Smith Realtors I think. I'm too sleepy to fully remember right now. Thats all the info I have as far as the "hidden apt. jewels" of tulsa, ha. Watch out for the Brown Recluse.....

If you went to Paristology, youd have learned that brown recluses are everywhere, especially in Oklahoma, They are not picky.. Also, that the bite of a recluse is necrotizing to tissue. I have been bitten a spider at Westport, and nothing happend. I still live in Westport and will continue to do so at least through 2nd year. I love it here, you wont find better management anywhere. You also cant beat how close it is to the school. LOTS of COMers live at Westport. Nice gym, free movie rentals, free bike rentals, free office for printing/copying/faxing. If you go anywhere else, dont go to 61st Peoria area, GANGBANGING HOOD. Apts at 91st and Riverside are pretty nice, although a days drive away. Im from Tulsa, there is no such thing as a "crime-free" area. But contrary to popular belief, Westport area isnt even near high on the crime list, ask the police that.. Its actually pretty well monitored, being as that many cops live here...

Best part is there's a 24 hour convenience store/gas station/burger king across from the main gate. What more can you ask from an apartment complex? Be prepared to pay some rent, tho.

Personally, I think you guys are nuts not to live at Westport for the first 2 years. You can't beat the convenience. I didn't see many spiders in my apartment, but I was probably lucky.

First, happy belated birthday osudoc.
Second, an advertisement: Many of you probably know that Mayfest starts today. But, also the "Blue Dome Art Festival" will be going on at the same time down the street at 2nd and Elgin. My friend Kristin Luce will be exhibiting her art, as will many other local artists. with all this talk of new apts, why not go check out some local art to add to your decor? :-)
Third, I live way the heck in south Tulsa. I've found two black widow spiders in my garage in the past year. Not pleasant, but not that big of a deal...they're everywhere.

Thanks! I'm packing for Cancun tomorrow!

Congratulations to everyone who made it into the OSU-COM Class of 2009!

Here's a little bit of advice: take a break this summer, travel, just relax and have fun. If you're looking for an apartment or house keep in mind that commuting sucks. I first thought that it was a good idea to live about 15 minutes from school, but after first semester it got really old. Try to live close to school if at all possible. See you all at admitted student day.

How long are each of the third year rotations? And how many of the electives have to be in primary care?

Each rotation is one month long, except for internal medicine and community hospital, which are both two months. Our class has to have 4 primary care electives and 4 specialty electives, although that may change or already has changed, so I don't know what the new numbers will be. Probably 3 primary care and 5 specialties.

Yep, 1 kiddo who previously attended Union. School district was the first search home filter. If all goes as planned, we'll move the last week of June.

I saw the graduation pages. Everything looked very impressive. I couldn't figure out which one you were. Did you graduate or do you have one more year?

The match list looked varied and strong.

Dr. Mom, have you heard any talk of OSU getting a standardized patient (PC based)? They seem really useful. I'm hoping that some of the new tax windfall will get us one.

DrMom

I still have one year left. It was a good match list (along with lots of family medicine to keep the school happy)

Haven't heard of any PC standardized patients. Of course, I'm not really around the school much.

We're in the Jenks district, but right across the street is Union. My kiddo goes to a private school, though.

Good luck with the move. Hopefully it will go smoothly.

Alright, here is what I got. It is an on-line course starting with an introduction on July 7th. Lecture and lab presentations start July 11th. The course ends August 5th. You will be expected to participate each day by viewing materials on-line. There will be at least 4 major exams given on Fridays and the last Thursday. Students will be required to participate in discussion groups by virtual chat, discussion board, and e-mail. The cost will be $500-600 for three hours credit with the textbook as an additional cost. The course will appear as pass/fail on your transcript. Registration for the course begins sometime in June. Thats about everything I think.

Begin with the back muscles and work your way to the neck anatomy. I would recommend studying your Netter's Anatomy for the last 3 weeks of summer before school starts. That test is a monster! :scared:

On top of that, some moron made a sudden left at an intersection in front of me and I T-boned his Honda Civic. His fault. My car is possibly totaled. Plano cop on scene "What an idiot this guy is . . . not much question about what happened here." No injuries, but my family is very sore. while we're on the subject of anatomy, I checked out this book called something like "Anatomy Lessons from the Artistic Masters," and have been messing around with anatomical sketches, trying to make my life drawings as realistic/detailed as those of the Italian masters (ha). Granted this particular book is geared more towards artists wanting to learn anatomy as opposed to having a medical slant...but it made me wonder: how often do you all use sketching as a study tool in anatomy? What have been your best study tools and techniques?

Yeah, I was totally kidding about the exam thing. I have no idea if they're doing that this year. (That sucks for Fenrezz's class though.) I hope I didn't stress anyone out too bad. Athena, for me, it was important to be able to sketch out arteries (especially in the arms and legs) and nerves (especially brachial plexus). Sorry, no interesting events at admitted day. I met someone who had gone to the 1st one and she said it was pretty much the same. There only seemed to be maybe around 5 students interested in the Pre-Histo course, as publicly polled by Dana. Otherwise, just don't forget to turn in required paperwork by July 15th.
Oh yeah, but here's something that I would like to hear opinions on if you're up for it.... apparently OSU wants us to be "top of the line" in our medical equipment. For example.. pan optic ophthalmoscope is required instead of the standard type.. which means spending $600-700 on one versus $300-400. How often would we really make an official, specific diagnosis on a patient's eye without referring them to an ophthalmologist first?? However, I do understand the desire to produce absolutely the best PCP's possible. Any comments?

DrMom
06-20-2005, 05:36 PM
I don't think I've used my pan-optic since our clinical skills class, unfortunately. I use the vast majority of the other equipment we had to order pretty regularly (although mostly when some friend calls up and asks me to check their kiddo's ears ;))

All that said, I don't know that there's any way for you to get around buying all of the equipment. Wait until your class orders b/c you'll get a good discount. Don't even bother getting a stethoscope until then.

The only equipment I use from the stuff I bought is the stethoscope and pen light. Anything else you would need is usually provided in a clinical setting. But it's true, you can't get around getting all that stuff because you'll need it in clinical skills class (and for the occasional health fair, if you volunteer).

Bit of advice though. In my opinion, when they talk about length of stethoscopes and sound quality, I would highly advise getting the longer one. You'll appreciate it a lot more on internal medicine. I had the shorter one, got frustrated with it, and ended up buying the longer. Sound quality was no different to my ears.

If you have to buy an ophthalmoscope, the pan-optic is the way to go; its head and shoulders better than the coaxial (if that's what it's called). You can see so much more with the pan optics. You'll probably rarely have opportunity to use it after second year, but like drmommy says, always nice to have around when someone is asking for medical advice, especially if they just cooked dinner, because then they will feel obligated to give you free food.

If you find out that your 2nd year isn't selling their microscope, consider renting one-unless you really really want to own one. I freaked last year and bought a brand new one because I forgot about the renting option. Also, it doesn't take very long to get one so don't worry too much about time.

thanks for the info. Do you remember when you got your mentor info?

The OSU-Tulsa campus has a decent gym that I plan on using, not too extensive, but a good variety. I saw a Bally's in town, but it was a little far away.

I think it was August when we got any mentor info. It seemed like it was really close to orientation week.

Some people joined the YMCA...I think I heard that St. John's has a workout facility that is nice but may be expensive. For those in South Tulsa/Jenks, there is The Grand Health Club, which is nice and had a student special last year (~$30.00/month). I think Westport has a workout facility too. I believe OSU-Tulsa's gym is free to us since the health sciences center doesn't have one.

OSU-Tulsa has one.

You can use equipment/facilities at any OSU campus for free, as you are a student.

Alright, I'm a pretty patient, "go with the flow" person. However there is this lady I work with who is always passive-aggressively implying that I'm not going to quite be a real doctor. It's getting so old! Some scenarios off the top of my head: "You're going back and getting your MD after your DO right?" "Back when I was growing up, we used to call that the cat and dog hospital (referring to Tulsa regional)," "my son's pediatrician says you better be sure and 'go MD' when youre picking your specialty. He tells me a couple of DOs he's met can't even look in a kid's ear and tell if it's infected."
All this coming from one lady! It drives me nuts. Sometimes I bluntly tell her that she's been misinformed, sometimes I just let it wash over me, sometimes I try and explain similarities/differences but its like shes not even listening!

Have you guys had experiences like this? Have any snappy (but subtle...she's above me in the company) comebacks/statistics/ways of dealing?

I have found that most people who are not in the field, including "pre-med" advisors, don't really know much if anything about D.O.'s. The bottom line is that they can gain licensure to practice medicine. Don't worry about what these people say or think. If you ask others in the health profession, like nurses, they usually know what a D.O. is and agree that there is little if any actual difference.

Oh, I'm still happy I chose OSU. I'm excited (orientation is one month from today, eek!) and hearing comments like those of my co-worker doesn't deter me or make me second guess myself. It's just frustrating to have the "average joe" act all high and mighty in their opinions when they've not taken the time to figure out why they even have that opinion. I'll probably print off some info and put it on her desk, maybe highlight the key bits. :-) Thanks, and sorry for the downer of a post! (TGIF!)

I would not waste my time puttin the info on her desk... the fact is, when she has to go the emergency room and a DO treats her, tell her to ask the DO what the difference is then.
welcome to OSU, it gets better here, i promise

Only four weeks left until orientation!

I must get some home projects completed in the interim :scared:

Anyone up for a Tulsa SDN social gathering? I think meeting some fellow students would be great.

You guys really need to do that. :) My class of SDNers got together for dinner a couple of nights before orientation. It was very nice to walk into orientation having some faces I recognized.

Maybe we could set a date of Saturday 7/30 or 8/6. That would provide time to drum up interest and allow more students to arrive in town. Days other than Saturday are OK too. Any suggestions?

Since I am enjoying my current unemployment, my schedule is pretty flexible.

I don't move to Tulsa until July 30th...so I would be more up for an August gathering. I may be in Fort Worth the weekend of the 6th though.

Hmm, Tuesdays tend to be pretty uneventful. Want to plan on the evening of Tuesday the 9th? I think most of us will be unemployed by August...so really, any week nights can work for me too. Where did everyone decide to live?

August 6 or 9 works for me. Anybody that is currently in town and wants to get socialize earlier, let me know.

I bought a home at 85th & Mingo (south Tulsa). The drive is 15-20 minutes.

just wanted to welcome everyone to OSU-COM. if any of you are in the campus, come find me at the student senate office (nicely hidden inside the student lounge) - i'm usually here Mon to Fri, 8-2, working on orientation and health fair stuff. so, if any of you are freaking out about school starting soon and need somebody to talk to, i'll be at the senate office :) . congratulations to all of you, and do get together before school starts. we might even come by  .

Thanks for the kind words Elaine. I might be dropping some info off next Mon/Tues and will try to stop by. I've never seen any office in the student lounge, but then again I've only walked by or through it a few times.

Has every body got the immunizations, insurance, and financial aid done? I just did the MPN through T.H.E. in the last couple of days. I also finished up the second TB test an
