UDbiochem 12-08-2004, 03:33 PM I'm pretty sure I'll be going here... I have heard from most of the schools I applied to, and NJMS is the only one who has accepted me. :)
I won't be able to make it to any of the January things though :(, I'll be studying abroad.

drguy22 12-08-2004, 07:46 PM where is everyone else....whos goin to the luncheon Jan 7th?
dbpatto 12-08-2004, 09:21 PM Hey folks,
I'm 99% sure that I'll be going to NJMS.... so, uhh, yeah.
hi.
Umm, well I work in a neuroscience lab at NJMS at the moment (part of my "year-off, gotta do something useful with myself mantra") ...and I commute there every morning from Hoboken, which btw is a _fantastic_ place to live.
So anyway, I might have at least a little bit of insight into what it's like living/working in and around Newark if anyone is thinking about that stuff already.... i'm sure I'll end up voicing all sorts of opinions on the matter at some point anyway, whether asked or not :)
All my mail gets sent to my parents house up near Morristown and I've been to lazy to go get it recently... so is the luncheon actually at the NJMS Health Science building on the 7th? ...or do we have to show up somewhere off campus?

EZV32 12-09-2004, 08:44 AM how did you guys get notified about this luncheon on the 7th? I was accepted to NJMS but havent heard about this yet.
also, isnt the RWJ luncheon on the same day?? Its bad enough having to decide between the two, now I gotta decide which luncheon to go to?
ChickAmok 12-09-2004, 11:17 AM hey,
i'm still interviewing at other places, but i got into njmed and loved it! hello, possible future classmates. ez-something, did you take orgo over the summer at shu?

My commute to NJMS from Hoboken takes me ~25-30 minutes every morning. Coming home can be 30-60 minutes depending on the traffic. (Most often it takes about 35, but very occassionally there's an accident or something, in which case you'll spend the 30 minute or so beating your head against the steering wheel in frustration.)
Distancewise Hoboken is about 8 miles away from Newark.
PublicEnemy 12-09-2004, 11:51 AM that parkway can be killer.
do most students live right near campus? like in Society Hill or Ironbound?
dbpatto 12-09-2004, 12:36 PM From what I understand, most students live outside of Newark. If students do live here though, they live in Society Hill. (Not that I think the area is really all that dangerous, but there's just not much to do in Newark. It would be pretty miserable living there I think. *shrug*) The majority of students live in surrounding towns and commute 20-30 minutes in.
The commute from Hoboken/Jersey City doesn't touch the parkway or Turnpike though. Route 1 and 9 will take you straight to campus. As will Route 580 to 280... all major Holland Tunnel traffic is heading the other direction during both rush hours too, so it's really not all that bad a commute.
EZV32 12-09-2004, 12:59 PM hey,

i think you were talking to me...but no I didnt take orgo at shu this summer. was someone by the name EZ in your class? thatd be a cool name
so how did people find out about this luncheon?...im starting to think my acceptance was just a dream!
vcatz 12-09-2004, 03:18 PM I have also been accepted at NJMS. I was really impressed with the school but am not 100% sure that I will be attending. I have not heard anything about the luncheon in January. Did you guys the invite via snailmail or email?

I would so just take the path if I were you. It's so cheap, brings you right to Newark, and runs every half hour 24 hours a day! Also for those nights you don't feel like going home and just going into the city, just skip hoboken and continue on down the line! :)
drguy22 12-09-2004, 06:58 PM so the Question is........who will u guys choose?? RWJ or NJMS :)
PublicEnemy 12-09-2004, 07:03 PM an hour part? you guys are gonna go to both luncheons aren't you? haha thats funny, just don't decide to go to both schools. i need one of those spots. haha. hopefully i won't get waitlisted.

The Path trains ain't so simple I'm afraid... The Path doesn't run directly from Hoboken to Newark. (I thought it did too when I moved here.)
There is a Path train straight from Newark into World Trade Center though... it just doesn't stop in Hoboken.
To commute via rail from Hoboken to Newark one would have to 1.) possibly take the light rail or bus to the path station. (most apartments within reasonable walking distance to path are ridiculously expensive) Then 2) take a path train from Hoboken to Journal Square in Jercey City. From there at Journal square one would 3.) take a path train to Newark. And _then_ one have to 4.) take the UMDNJ bus from Penn Station in Newark. I've considered it, and 4 forms of public transportation would be a pain in the arse :)
So if anyone wanted a quicker rail ride to Newark, they would have to find a place to live in or near Journal Square in Jersey City. (Which is also a pretty nice place these days... just not as much stuff to do there as Hoboken.)
Anyway hope this helps a bit :)
MonteeC 12-10-2004, 12:15 PM I think you could also catch a train from Grove St. in Downtown Jersey City. It runs straight to Newark without the need for stops or so the PATH website says. The neighborhood in DJC is not bad either plus it's way close to a mall. I'm probably heading in to NJMS myself so hope to see ya'll at the luncheon.
#1SDNer 12-10-2004, 12:17 PM Can you guys give me some advise on hotels and closeby airports (I am not from NJ)
I would also like to know anything about the school such as curriculum, USMLE average scores, surrounding neighborhood etc.
Thank you guys.
Yea it's kinda retarded how NJMS and RWJ have their luncheon thing on the same day. Oh well, I'll be at the NJMS one anyways. See you guys there.
UDbiochem 12-10-2004, 01:11 PM Is anyone going to set up a day at NJMS with the admissions office for a 2nd look type thing? The letter mentioned something like this. I'll probalby do this since I won't be able to go to the luncheon.
just got it too...its the same day as RWJ, except this one ends at 2 and that one starts at 3....hmmm
That a strange coincidence  I would certainly go to both an hour is enough time in between. Now all i need is an ACCEPTANCE from RWJ and I would be set! :)
dbpatto 12-10-2004, 02:18 PM Can you guys give me some advise on hotels and closeby airports (I am not from NJ)
Thank you guys.
Well the most convenient airport to go to is Newark International.
Umm, there's a Marriot on the airport grounds which would probably be about a 20-25 minute taxi-ride to NJMS. I had to stop at the hotel once for diections... yeah. Good stuff.
drguy22 12-27-2004, 09:40 PM ok so whos goin to the luncheon on Jan 7th?

curriculum is as follows for the 1st semester -
Gross anatomy + embryology
MGM - biochem + genetics (+ some molecular)
Core - which is a physician preceptorship (1x per week) and small group class
2nd semester -
Physio + histo
Mind/behavior/function
the surrounding area is not as bad as people think. society hill is literally across the street. about 1/3 of the students live there - some move out eventually to other areas but from what i have seen, its too convenient to do that. I personally like being able to walk home after lab, throw off the damn scrubs and grab some food before coming back to study. its not like u have to worry about traffic (ITS ACROSS THE STREET!!).
it takes me about 5-6minutes of a quick walk to get from door to door - sure beats the 15min of driving in and looking for parking

u know wat the USLME avg is? u like the new curriculum? im def goin to njms...jus wanna know..i already know the admin is GR8!

number that i know of from 2001 were that USMLE step 1 scores were 218 (RWJ 220) and 212 NJMS for step 2 (216 for RWJ)
the curriculum isn't really that bad. We were the first class to run through it and there were just a few bumps but all in all, its not bad.
The only qualm most students had with the curriculum was that we weren't as ready for MGM when it started (it started 1 month later). I suppose most people were used to having to focus on anatomy the whole time that it took some time to adjust to the other class. though the bigger reason was probably that with a 1month late start, this meant a lot of material covered really really fast - even for a med school pace (on top of a fairly detailed anatomy unit). I believe this was going to be adjusted for next year. The advantage you guys would have if NJMS sticks to their current curriculum is that when you start, the 2nd years will be able to give you advice on how to handle it all. The 2nd years this year weren't familiar with this curriculum so it was tough to advise us, though some advice they gave was great.
Did they switch neuroanatomy and microbio/immuno for MS1?

I heard the USMLE avg for 2003 was 228...but tat was just sumthin i heard...so i was tryin to confirm tat.....
When I asked Heinrich about the mean step 1 scores for NJMS students he said "we are consistently above the average." So I'm assuming because he didn't give me a number it prolly means they are only slightly above the average. I mean if they were significantly higher, I'm sure he woudl have given a number. But then again he may have assumed I have no idea what the scoring is like since I'm no where near that point in my medical education.

isnt the avg like 210? or sumthin like tat
4 Ever 12-28-2004, 12:16 PM Did they switch neuroanatomy and microbio/immuno for MS1?
I believe they have - Unless they change something between now and april, MBB (mind, brain, behavior) is the next class for the 2nd semester after physio/histo is over
4 Ever 12-28-2004, 12:24 PM slightly above the avg is pretty consistent with what I have heard - the average usmle score is around 215.
the 228 number seems a bit exaggerated. Maybe the person meant 218 instead of 228?
NeverGettingIn 12-28-2004, 12:30 PM I interviewed the last week before thanksgiving...and I still haven't heard anything from NJMS. Just curious if I'm the only one who hasn't heard diddly.

I interviewed about three weeks before you, and I haven't heard anything either. I stopped by the admissions office to ask just yesterday, and all they said was: "No decision yet." This was, of course, after they told me I had to be patient and wait 6-8 weeks. ("So when did you interview?" "Over 8 weeks ago.") Oh well.

last year at the luncheon they told us that most spots were filled and they were just interviewing for the waitlist. don't be discouraged by this because there were different faces at the may luncheon compared to the jan one.
still make sure to make a great impression !! good luck and congrats to the incoming class
dbpatto 01-04-2005, 01:33 PM So... "business casual" for the luncheon, eh?
Does that mean wear a tie? I hate getting dressed up.

My experience with the waitlist last year was that (this from the mouth of Dr. Heinrich last March) the waitlist isn't formulated or ranked until sometime after the 15th of May. So if you've been waitlisted, my best guess is that you'll be thrown in with all the other waitlisters and reevaluated sometime in early to mid may. You'll just have to sit tight for a while before you'll hear anything.

mrgq912 01-06-2005, 02:52 PM I had my interview just before christmas on Dec. 21st, and was wondering how long it would take to receive a reply from the admissions office? How long did you guy's have to wait to hear back after your interview. I heard of cases were people heard within 2 -3 weeks post interview.
I understand that their is a lunch tomorrow for the accepted students so far. If someone could post back of what they hear, that would be great. I really hope the class is not full, cause NJMS is really my top choice.

I have a feeling that a lot of my friends who applied to NJMS are prolly gonna go elsewhere. That should open up a lot of spots. Most overqualified applicants in NJ apply to it as a backup so I'd imagine there would be a lot of waitlist movement.

As someone who commutes to the school every day for work, I maintain the the drive from the Hoboken/jersey City area is relatively harmless. Easily Under a half-hour - been doing it for 6 months now. I've also been meeting more and more people at this school, and very few seem excited about living in newark. (very few actually live in Newark either) Those that do have told me much about the town. Most see living near by the school as something of a sacrifice. I love NJMS, but after living my nights and weekends in such a vibrant area as Hoboken and spending my work days around NJMS, I'll tell ya that Newark just doesn't have much to offer your average twenty-something-year old. Granted we will be spending a tremendous portion of our time studying in and around NJMS, making it the only place we ever see would drive me at least somewhat stir-crazy.
(I draw my experience from living across the street from Gtown Med school while at the Georgetown SMP. I would spend weeks in essentially the same building - w/ same people. Everything had to do with med school classes - drove me and many like me nearly nuts. I wish I had lived further off from the school... would have been easier to cope.)
Anyhow, I just want to make sure you guys consider the area before you get quite so fixated on living Newark. It will be neccessary to separate ourselves from our work environment from time to time... don't mean to rile you up or anything - just a thought.

Well I'm better with towns immediately east of Newark, not so much with towns any other directiosn :)
So east of Newark is Bayonne, Union, Hoboken, Jersey City - although Jersey City and Hoboken are the only areas that have that "young professional" type crowd living there - via there proximity to the Path trains no doubt.
North of Newark is kearny
There are tons of places west of Newark though where I'm sure the cost of houseing isn't so high. Like East, South and West Orange - Hillside not too far off. Milburn and Maplewood are pretty nice areas. Not too much to the south of Newark

There are tons of places west of Newark though where I'm sure the cost of houseing isn't so high. Like East, South and West Orange - Hillside not too far off. Milburn and Maplewood are pretty nice areas. Not too much to the south of Newark
thnx...btw dbpatto...why dont u have NJMS class of 2009 in ur signature  ?

Okay, so I've had two interviews already, made sure to make Dr. H my best bud, and have been calling every three weeks. Anything else anyone else can think of? I figure it's just the wait now.

Good luck man :luck: im rootin for ya!
Blue Scrub 03-03-2005, 04:39 PM Yeah if you can keep in contact with Dr. H via snailmail or email, that would be a huge advantage...I wrote a bunch of letters, as well as emailed him with updates, and he told me later on that it def helped me get in....good luck man, hope to see you in August!! We're all pullin for ya!

Hrmmm, I tend to have a more subdued sense of enthusiasm for most things, say short of a new girlfriend or something. - that and I'm not 100% sure I'll be attending NJMS. I recently found that several of my former Undergrad classmates go to RWJ - all of whom seem remarkably pleased with their experiences there. So if I hear back from RWJ that I got in, (interviewed several weeks ago) I'll take a serious look back at both the schools. Until then, I will just make the assumption that NJMS is where I'm headed. (And it most likely is of course, but we'll see.)
Blue Scrub 03-04-2005, 03:57 PM Both RWJ and NJMS are great schools, so I think anyone who goes to either school will speak favorably of their experiences there...either way, you cant go wrong!

Blue Scrub 03-08-2005, 08:09 PM congrats Davidthegnome!! when were you accepted to NJMS? Am I just oblivious? Anyway, yeah I've been around the Hoboken/Jersey City area and it is really expensive....i'd like to live in Hoboken but I'd have to look hard for an affordable place....there are also nice places in jersey city, like around grove street...what do you guys think?

davidthegnome 03-08-2005, 08:29 PM thanks! i actually got accepted back in oct. but i have been debating between here and drexel until recently. i guess when it came down to it i realized njms is where i would be happiest at and make the most of my med school experience. plus getting instate tuition helps :D ! i'm glad i took the time to make my decision. when njms is under the microscope, and trust me i put it there, you really see how great of a school it is. i saw drguy is doing nih summer research, very cool, anyone else planning anything?

Yeah I just got a great feeling from the school, not to mention it is a great state school to go to for academics and clinical training....Im actually planning a trip to Europe for the summer, just the opposite of DrGuy! :D
I figure its a good time to go and site see, relax, before med school starts....I never got the chance to study abroad either so I think its a good time to do it....you said you found places for $700, was that in Hoboken or JC? That's not a bad price at all..
thehomez66 03-08-2005, 11:57 PM Hey guys, I'm also in the '09 class, yay :)
About housing, I'm pretty sure there is a 'Housing Day' where they hook us up with roomates and tell us where to look for apartments and such, but I haven't heard of the date when this will be taking place. Does anybody know when they are planning on having it? Thanks in advance.
Wassup gents and ladies. Class of 09 here too.
I can answer questions about Hoboken and JC because I just recently leased an apartment in JC near the Exchange place stop on the PATH. I scoped out both areas pretty closely. JC is a pretty big place and theres some nice spots (near the waterfront, downtown near Hamilton Park, and Pavonia) and some crappy places near the Journal Square stop and the Heights section near Hoboken. The best part of both areas is that you can be in the Village or Midtown in less than 15 minutes on the PATH so its basically like going to medical school in Manhattan.
If you want to live on your own, JC is probably more likely and its cheaper the more west you go. You're defineltly going to need a roomate to swing a place in Hoboken but its a great place to live considering how yuppie it is.
Commute time to NJMS is only 20-25 minutes on the 1/9 from JC and Hoboken. On the PATH, Exchange Place, Grove, and JSQ go directlty to Penn at Newark where the shuttle runs during the weekdays to school.
I read that NJMS is purchsing St. Mary's in Hoboken so it might be possible clinical rotation site in addition to University and Hackensack. I think the hospital in JC got punted to Mt. Sinai.

dbpatto 03-09-2005, 09:00 AM I've posted numerous times about how the commute from NJMS into the Hoboken/JC area isn't so bad, but yesterday was the worst traffic experience I've ever had. Indulge me for a second:
To put this in perspective, according to mapquest, I live approximately 9 miles from NJMS in Hoboken. I take the 1&9 to NJMS in the morning and cut through downtown Newark up Raymond and Market street to the school. NJMS is much closer to the entrance to 280 though, so in the evenings to avoid traffic I take 280 to 580 and back on the 1&9 just before it enters the Holland Tunnel entrance.
OK, so it was warm and raining yesterday morning, then sleet, then heavy snow that didn't seem to be sticking. Once the snow became thick I decided it was time to go home - I left NJMS around 2:30 PM. Want to guess what time I pulled up in front of my apartment in Hoboken?! 8:15 PM!!!!!!!!!!!
That's right, I sat on the road for nearly 6 hours yesterday to go less than 10 miles!!!!!!! There were so many accidents that 280 was a parking lot, as was 580 and forget about 1&9... the temperature dropped so quickly that all the precipitation froze immediately by about 3PM. We were driving on literally 2 inches of ice. The radio mentioned hundreds of accidents.
To be fair though, the radio networks that I was listening too, as I sat for hours with nothing to do in my car, mentioned that traffic yesterday was the worst they'd seen in many years, so this is by no means a common occurence. Man was it awful though...

and dbpatto, that sounds pretty terrible. My friend actually had a similar experience the other day where it took him 4 hrs to drive 8 miles, pretty rediculous, but as you mentioned not a common occurrance.
And about housing, I don't know if this has been answered yet, but whats wrong with Society Hill? I know the area is bad and all but is it really THAT bad? And if anybody actually lives there what has your experience been like and would you recommend for it or against it? Thanks again
Blue Scrub 03-09-2005, 11:01 AM What's up future new classmates! About the housing thing, I think during the next luncheon in June, all the housing stuff will be discussed....I have nothing against Society Hill, I hear its a pretty nice place to live....the only thing is I kind of like having stuff around me, like restaurants, bars, a video rental place, stuff like that, and I hear there's not much around Society Hill....but the good thing is it is just across the street from the school, so its kind of a give and take thing I guess.....Im not sure though, I might end up living there anyway, we'll see....
Blue Scrub 03-09-2005, 11:05 AM dbpatto, so you live in Hoboken? Do you live with anyone else? How is the rent? And is it tough to find a place to park your car? that is, unless you have a parking spot or something....just interested since Hoboken is a sweet place to live! :)
Sorry to hear about the 6hr commute, that totally sux....I feel your pain, I dont think I've waited that long to drive 8 miles though

I totally agree with what you said, and its still up in the air for me too. Right now I go to TCNJ and me and my roomates live about 10-15 minutes from the school, probably the farthest commute of all the commuters minus the ones that live at home with their parents, and I love where we live. Its a much nicer area, more things to do, shoping malls, movies, restaruants, etc and that more than makes up for the commute. So I think it might be a better choice to live in hoboken or another neighboring town for those reasons amongst others. Plus I hear Society Hill is quite costly.
dbpatto 03-09-2005, 11:48 AM Well I have a roommate in Hoboken - we each pay about 900 a month. Incredibly nice apartment though - located way off center from the town up around 10th and Jefferson. Mostly open lots (with luxury apartment buildings all set to go up) surround us, so the parking on the street is no problem. There's a brand new Shoprite only a few blocks away as well. (video store, local retraunts, local bars, etc... are all within a few minutes walking distance.) It was a pretty lucky find actually, especially for hoboken. I'm not sure if I'd keep the apt for next year, but it's just such a greatplace to be. Who knows... If you'd like to know more about the area feel free to PM. I'd be happy to give you the name/number of the company that found the apartment for us.
davidthegnome 03-09-2005, 05:39 PM by the way, anyone who reads on the withdrawl thread that i'm withdrawling form njms please ignore it, its definitely NOT going to happen.

drguy22 03-09-2005, 07:45 PM read this! just came out yesterday!
External Research Awards Climb to Unprecedented Amounts
03/08/2005
Office of Research and Sponsored Programs
NJMS has nearly doubled its extramural research awards portfolio within the last five years, with external awards totaling more than $104 million for Fiscal Year 2004. In Fiscal Year 2003, research awards reached $64.9 million, up from $38.2 million in 2002. Such growth in funding is helping to foster research collaborations between individual investigators and departments. In addition, many NJMS clinical researchers are serving as principal investigators for major NIH-funded clinical trials and patient-care initiatives.
monalisa83 03-09-2005, 08:11 PM Hello all, this is my first time posting on this thread but I am also a class of 2009 incoming freshman. I saw one apt today that is literally one block away from Penn station. Convenient to take the city subway to classes, but I kinda like the idea of living one block away from school. I'm doing an internship this summer at the hospital so I need a place to move in by May 1. I like Society Hill in that its convenient, newly furbished, and includes washer and dryer (no hiking up four blocks to do my laundry). I'm curious as to what other locations you all are considering. I keep checking out the newark housing postings and it seems like the range is about 650-700 for a room. Are there any other sites where ppl post available rooms in society hill or in newark? Thx.

monalisa83 03-11-2005, 01:42 PM Yeha so I got there and the ad said the apt was like a block away from UMDNJ.. so Im thinking great.. and the price was so awesome.. as I walk up the block to the street it suddenly became really dark.. and really quiet.. I continued and passed several abandoned buildings ... and felt goosebumps (not just because it was cold).. just didnt get a good vibe.. so I paused and turned around. I called the owner of the apt and told her the first thing that came to mind..."umm this place is too freaky" .. yeah i couldnt think of nething better to say.. :)
oh well.. still hoping for something in Society Hill (crossing fingers).. and to top it off the apt wasnt a block away from UMDNJ... :)

lol..ya u gotta be careful...i called the student affairs office today and they told me that they were putting something regarding housing together and will send something out in April....i dont know what though.
Happy613 03-11-2005, 06:36 PM I am a 2nd year at njms and I live in hoboken. Its a great place to live, but parking can be bad depending on where you live. There are about 10 people from each class that currently live in Hoboken, the commute is not bad, and there are lots of places to study.
The downside to Hoboken is the price, but if you search around you can find something in the 650-750 range.
Also, regading St. Mary's, even though umdnj hasn't bought it yet, it currently is a site that you can do your third year family med clerkship at (most other sites are private doctors offices...its the only one I know of that is inpatient for family med).
Congrads on your acceptances! njms is a great place :)

That's cool, Hoboken looks like a nice place to live.....where are some good places to study in Hobo? Finding something in the 650-750 range would be nice, but are those places like really crappy or can you find a decent place for that?

I used Craigslists. I searched room shares (which means your own room just in an apartment with someone else).
It might take a while but you can definitley find something. I got a great deal, 700 a month, a brownstone with four other roomates (none go to med school, but all are in their low to mid twenties).
I have a friend in my class who also lives in Hoboken and pays 625. While these are not standard rates, they are around if search long enough.

Cool, thanks Happy! Two of my friends recently moved to Hoboken and they also used Craigslist....So when is everyone going to start looking for a place to live?? I know there is the luncheon in June where they will discuss everything about housing, but are any of you guys going to start looking before the luncheon? Will all the good deals and places be gone after the luncheon?
DrOctopus 03-17-2005, 06:26 PM Time to jump in here for the MS-I opinion on things.
The housing sitation of the 1st year class is very diverse. Many live in the suburbs (Hoboken, Nutley, Bloomfield, Montclair, etc). Biggest complaints:
1. Parking--it sucks big time. Since they started building the new apartment complex, we lost the "dirt lot" next to the Norfolk St. garage and about 100 spaces with it. Parking is an absolute nightmare if you get to school any later than 10AM.
2. Commute--Rush hour commute on 280, 1&9 and especially the GSP after the Union toll plaza coming North is an absolute nightmare. Learn the back roads, I have been told.
I live in Society Hill and lucked out on a sweet deal with rent that is $75-100 less/month for a larger apartment with a private bathroom, closer proximity to school, and more amenities than many other students. I agree with the previous comment that approximately 1/3 of the MS-I class lives in Society Hill.
As for the "need to get out of the school environment/have to have things to do around where I live" argument, I find most of that to be a non-issue. Most students own or have access to a car and travelling out of Newark to do things isn't a big deal. Most of the time the "class activities" involve lots of students leaving their suburban neighborhoods and going to NYC or Hoboken or another bar in a different suburb.
Also, forget about trying to take the PATH to school. Newark City Subway from Newark Penn is a decent option, but at night it runs infrequently. Forget about commuting on the Morris & Essex line to Broad St. It's an incredibly sketchy station. Keep in mind when selecting housing that you will have many late nights at school studying. How much of your schedule do you want public transportation to be a part of? We have a student who commutes from Manhattan, so it is definitely doable, but for the average student I would recommend against that

thehomez66 03-17-2005, 07:24 PM Time to jump in here for the MS-I opinion on things.
We have a student who commutes from Manhattan, so it is definitely doable, but for the average student I would recommend against that
Great advice DrOctopus but could you or anyone else please comment on the issue of saftey and security at Society Hill. Is it as dangerous as people say? Have you heard of any robberies or cars being broken into etc? Thanks again for your help
Blue Scrub 03-17-2005, 07:31 PM Great post Dr. Octopus, really helpful....I have a question about Society Hill: Are all the apts there 2-bedrooms? Or are there studios, 1-bedroom, 3- or 4-bedroom apts there as well?
DrOctopus 03-17-2005, 07:43 PM Society Hill is really 3 separate complexes. Society Hill I is down S. Orange Ave. a little bit. Society Hill II is between 13th Ave. and W. Market Street (probably where the apartment near the "abandoned buildings" was). Society Hill III (the newest) is between Warren St. and W. Market. [These are not exact locations because I am not really familiar with the other two complexes. Most of the people who live in the complexs are well to do, professional students, or families. I haven't heard of anyone's apartment being broken into, but that being said, my room has an exterior door and there are 4 locks on it. I have heard a story about a girl who's car was broken into and another student who was robbed on campus. Both perpetrators were caught very shortly after the incidents.
The thing about Newark is that it's a city, not the greatest city, but certainly not the worst. That doesn't mean you should be out walking alone in the middle of the night, but it also doesn't mean that people are getting robbed or jumped every time you walk outside. As long as you're smart about things, you should be fine.

4 Ever 03-18-2005, 11:24 AM Great post Dr. Octopus, really helpful....I have a question about Society Hill: Are all the apts there 2-bedrooms? Or are there studios, 1-bedroom, 3- or 4-bedroom apts there as well?
there are no studio nor 1 bedroom "apts" in society hill - though the term condos have been tossed around in describing these homes, they have a townhome condo setup. Some homes are completely town home style so you dont have anyone above you OR under you. Some "condos" are two stories with a neighber either above you or below you (depending on which one you pick).
safety is always a concern but as long as you dont walk home in the middle of the night by yourself with your headphones on, its not as bad. I'm not saying its completely safe but use common sense when you are in such a city. As for society hill, their security vehicles patrol quite often. They dont just say they patrol - they actually have sensors stationed at various parts of the area and they scan the sensors to confirm that those locations have been visited. During the snow storms that we've had, they have been great at plowing our streets AND driveways AND our doorsteps.
some parts of the hill are easier to walk to from but others arent so close - so just look at the various parts of SH and decide.

I didn't know had to send in our final official transcript  good think you guys mentioned it, but like drguy said, is it ok if i send mine in after graduation as well, or is that too late?
davidthegnome 03-21-2005, 11:50 PM just ask for a copy sent post grad. many registrar offices offer that service for applicants to grad school. by the way, the closer august gets the longer it seems to take.

UDbiochem 03-22-2005, 11:01 AM Congrats and welcome!! One question: What will happen if you get off the waitlist at Penn?
If Penn took me off the waitlist really soon and offered me money (not going to happen), I'd consider it. But I've gotten nothing but love from NJMS and very little love from Penn. Lately I've really felt I wasn't cut out for the ivy league anyway. And I know some cool people who are probably going to NJMS too.
But yeah... 99.9999999999% sure going to NJMS! I want to start planning my life next year and stuff soon.
So all you NJMSers, do you think it'd be reasonable to live at home first year? Would commuting be soo horrible if I commuted from Bergen County for a while? I'm trying to save money and it's possible I might try to live at home for a little while.
4 Ever 03-22-2005, 12:16 PM commuting from home can be done in your first year - if your commute is longer than 30minutes non-traffic, i wouldnt recommend it.
also with commuting you need to manage your schedule very tightly - you lose a lot of time commuting and you can't afford to lose studying time by adding some unscheduled relaxation every so often.

Welcome, and about commutting, I wouldn't recommend it, just like 4ever said, it takes alot of time out of your day and its just a hastle that can add more unneeded stress to your life. Also, you won't get the same experience out of med school if you lived at home, the same goes for college. And if funds are tight, hopefully FAFSA will help you out and pay for your housing. But either way welcome classmate :)

That's a pretty good percentage! :) As far as saving yourself some money, I think it would be fine to commute as long as the commute doesn't kill you (more than 30-45 min), and as long as it doesnt affect your studying...otherwise we all know the perks that come with living at home...

It's probably a 20-30 minute drive, not too bad. I figure if I can save a little the first year, I should. If I meet an awesome roommate at housing day, this might change. :) I'll consider all my options.

The 3 big books that you can't avoid are :
- Moore's clinical anatomy
- Netters Anatomy Atlas (there are others but this is everyones favorite - combined with lab time, you can do really well on practicals with this)
- Grant's Dissector
every year AMSA bribes new members by giving away netters by joining their organization. Both the membership and the book cost the same so if you really want to be AMSA, you get the added benefit. For others, they choose to just buy the book and have nothing to do with the organization
during the luncheons they also usually give away a free Netter's or two for anyone who's birthday falls on that day or around that day
so if you want, you can hold off on the netters
Aside from that, there are plenty other anatomy books that can put a dent in your wallet if you go book happy. I unfortunately spent more than i should have on books and i believe i have a total of about 8 anatomy related books in my library. Combined with 3 biochem/genetics books and thats easily over 500dollars. most of my books sit collecting dust. my suggestion is to RESIST THE URGE TO BUY NUMEROUS BOOKS - THERE ARE BOOK SALES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR WHERE YOU CAN BUY THE BOOKS FOR MUCH CHEAPER!!!
if you really WANT to buy a book, get Moore's anatomy to satisfy your itch.
as for MGM class, i personally think u dont need ANY books besides some pre-test and a BRS book to complement. the class is heavily based off from the slides presented in class
you can ask about the Physician's core class at a later time

There is a tiny workout room where students can use one of several running machines and a few other assundry workout devices. It's accross from the gym near the cafeteria. I wandered by it today and glanced inside.
thehomez66 03-24-2005, 12:29 PM Awesome, thanks guys :)
Thanks 4Ever. Any need to buy stethoscopes or other thingamajigs?
I think a new Moore's anatomy (the big one) is supposed to come out this summer so I guess theres a going to be a price drop on the older editions.
Ive read somewhere that you can get a free Netters if you sign up for a credit card but my memory is a little hazy on that.
Yeah the lack of decent fitness center definetly blows. Its a small room with one treadmill, a bench and some assorted dumbells. RWJ has us beat in that regard.

vish57 03-24-2005, 01:55 PM Got into NJMS but I'm not sure I want to go there over RWJ where im waitlisted. My decisions is almost solely based on location because I know from past threads that both schools are great. New Brunswick seems like a nicer place than Newark with Rutgers campus nearby, with a nice gym, soccer fields, less crime, etc. There are also a lot of apartment complexes nearby.

Stethescopes are a must have item - To save you the trouble of finding out WHICH one to buy (though you can search threads but the answer is the same), you can't go wrong with either of the following choices: Master Cardiology or the Cardiology III
The cardiology III has a peds side which you can take the cap off to reveal the diaphragm. The master cardiology has a feature which allows you to listen to both low pitch and high pitch depending on how firmly you press against the body. My personal preference is the cardiology III (mostly because thats what I have) but I like using some of my friend's master cardiology too
Don't bother getting this ahead of time - the companies will have an hour to talk to you about all their items and to get the rebate, you need to buy THEIR things at the same time. So if you save a little now, it wont matter since you'll get the same price later. Just wait til orientation for these things.
There are plenty of other "required" items that are needed. I have felt no need to use all of them (Hell at times I think the required book isn't really needed either). Most doctors that you will shadow will have all the equipment in the room for you to use and the only piece of equipment that I need is my stethescope - once in a blue moon i take in my otoscope and opthamoscope because its easier to walk around the patient without having that wire hanging off. NOT ALL PRECEPTORS LET YOU DO THE PHYSICAL EXAM or the HPI for that matter - it all depends on who you have.
Advantage of getting someone like this: you get to practice on live patients and go through the whole process
Disadvantage: you seriously CANT do a full history AND physical every time you see a patient so you end up doing the essentials (moreso than what doctors do though). You also dont see as many patients this way - some people who follow get to see more cool things and more patients.
on the OSCE at the end of the year, regardless of if you've had "hands on" experience, you will still need to abide by the checklist and that requires you to practice on your own. The only thing is that when you get to 2nd year, you will most likely have to purchase a kit then anyway.
If you get the panoptic head for the ophthalmscope, all the equipment will run near 1000dollars.
It's really tough to resist the urge to buy these things but trust me, you will save MUCH more money if you just wait it out. On that note, the scrubs can be bought from the Student Council store for 20bucks a set i believe. You will NEED these for anatomy - unless you want your regular clothes to smell after lab
drguy22 03-24-2005, 06:52 PM Stethescopes are a must have item - To save you the trouble of finding out WHICH one to buy (though you can search threads but the answer is the same), you can't go wrong with either of the following choices: Master Cardiology or the Cardiology III

Rent in SH varies - some are known to pay around 550/month + utilities while others pay sometimes upwards of 750+/month
the average is around 650/month ---- more or less depending on your room size and if you have your own bathroom.
My suggestion would be to find one in either Society Hill I or II

drguy22 03-25-2005, 11:51 AM To All Entering NJMS Students:
The below article appeared last week outlining the new residence hall
being constructed for students in Newark. The following link is a
rendition of the building:

UMDNJ building first university housing residence
The Associated Press State & Local Wire
October 26, 2004
NEWARK, N.J.
The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey has begun
construction on the first university housing residence in its 33-year
history.
Ground was broken Monday for the $92.3 million, 14-story building. It
will house 465 students in 234 apartments, many of which will have
views
of downtown Newark and the New York City skyline.
The building is expected to be finished by August 2006. It will have
nine stories of residential units above a five-story parking garage
and
will include a fitness center and several retail establishments.
Several other major projects are under construction on UMDNJ's Newark
campus:
-The UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School-University Hospital Cancer
Institute, a $103 million facility to open in June 2006.
-The Oral Health Pavilion, a $26 million facility housing clinical and
teaching activities of the UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School.
-A $60 million Ambulatory Care Center for UMDNJ-University Hospital
scheduled to open in June 2005.
drguy22 03-25-2005, 11:55 AM this is from NJMS's FAQ site...
Is housing available to students?
Construction has already begun on the newark campus for the very first university housing residence. The 14-story will be completed in the summer of 2006; the building will house 465 students in 234 residential apartments (a mix of studio, one bedroom, two bedroom, and three bedroom models). Views of downtown Newark and the New York City skyline. Included will be a fitness center, laundry facilities, a courtyard, parking and retail stores.
In addition, a great deal of off-campus housing is currently utilized by a significant number of NJMS students. The Office for Student Affairs assists NJMS students by providing valuable resources to address student housing needs. A Housing Day in June has proven to be extremely useful for sharing information about available off-campus housing to accepted students.
drguy22 03-26-2005, 09:49 AM 4Ever, did you guys get a copy of the NJMS match yet?...i know there was an email sent with a summary, but id be cool to see the actual match results...
thnx
thehomez66 03-27-2005, 08:53 PM Thanks for your reply drguy, I forgot the details that were in the email, you the man bro :)
o, and from what you posted and my own assumptions, I think we will get first picks on the housing over the other UMDNJ schools, right? Or is the housing just for NJMS students? And if so, who do you guys think will be guaranteed housing (MSI, MSII, etc.), even though it seems as if there are more than enough aparments to house the entire NJMS school.
4 Ever 03-27-2005, 09:54 PM the match list has been posted but from what i know, not online or in any soft copy format... will let you know if i hear
