Does anyone have any information on Graduate Hospital in philly? Have an interview there in Jan for Gen. Surg., but have not been able to obtain any information about the place so far. They have no website. Would appreciate it if someone could shed some light on the programme.

Thanx

Hola Shaggy,

I just had my interview at Graduate on Friday so all the dirt is fresh in my mind.

First the interview format is the worst that I have ever experienced. I'm still having a hard time evaluating the program separately from the way they interview. Apparently there are only 2 interview days and they interview approximately 45 people each day. You have 2 "interviews" one with the PD and a resident who since he wants to see everyone does group interviews of four applicants; this only lasts around ten minutes. The second interview is more normal and only lasts 15-20 minutes. Other than that you are sitting around with maybe an occasional resident (not many came to talk to us) for over an hour at a time.

The hospital itself is pretty nice, although you rotate through more than one and I didn't see the others. The PD tends to be very accomodating in allowing you to mold some elements of your training. There is a bundled 3 mos of electives in the third year which you can do away if you wish. So if you want to do CT with ______, you can go and do so. Although the program has four spots, they are only going to take 3 this year. (Don't ask why, they're just "trying it.") There is also the unspoken reasearch year. They require one of their residents to do a year of research. If no one volunteers, then they select someone.

I don't know what else you'll want to know. They actually have a website at www.graduatehospital.com which I haven't looked at yet. If you have any other questions let me know and I'll try to recall the answers. (My knowledge is essentially recognition-based, not recall).

Do many programs have this unspoken research year where if no one volunteers they pick someone? I've seen programs where they say they are 5 years long on FRIEDA, but then talk all about this research year on their website and it's gotten me a little scared. I'm not wanting to sign up for a research year, but still want a community program that's associated with a university.

Thanx Saph, for the helpful info. Group interview, hmmm... interesting. I looked at their website, but it doesn't contain any specific info on the programme. Was wandering what they asked you in the interview. It would be difficult to make an impression being 1 in 90! Did they ask any specific questions? Scenarios to deal with? Any pimping? Or do they try and get an idea of who you are and what you're about?

Your help is much appreciated GS, good luck on the trail...

The group interview didn't ask any real questions, just answered them.

The other interview was done with one of several faculty - so my experience likely will not mean much for you. My individual interview was with the surgery Chairman, a kind woman full of gravitas. She mostly focused on why I chose surgery, my strengths/weaknesses, and what was the biggest obstacle that I had overcome.

I have heard the rumor from other applicants that many programs have a rank list already in place and only use the interview to make slight adjustments. While I have not seen evidence to validate that, I suspect that Graduate ranks almost entirely on your paper application.

Good luck to you.

sorry to bump such an old thread.

does anyone have any more info on the Graduate Hospital surgical residency program?
