I do remember couple of incidents which still make me so happy happened during that one year love commute.

Once she gave me a cadbury's toffee on her birthday. I ate that toffee and preserved that choclate wrapping for several years inside my school book cover. My little sister destroyed it after a fight with me. I did not speak with my sister for 2 months because of her evil act. even now i feel that cadbury sweetness in my tongue when i think abt that cutie or if i see any cycle ricshaw in india during my visit.

The other incident happened during the last day of our school. She tripped and fell down while getting down from richshaw. She bruised her right knee due to fall. I immediately jumped out of the richshaw and held her for support. Then took some spit from my mouth and covered her knee bruise as first aid. I did not know that i would become a doctor in future at that time.
She profusely thanked me in her eyes without a word for my kind act.
I did not declare my love even at that tender wonderful moment. i was too shy. I still remember my first love whenever i examine any knees as a doctor. Tears fill my eyes during knee exams and my patients think that i am a very sensitive and sympathetic doctor.

I should have declared my love to that fourth grader. who knows? she could have been my wife now.I did not see that pretty girl next year. My mother said their family went to america. May be that little girl is aarti who has grown into a beautiful woman. world is too small anyway. you never know.

I think aartii's picture rekindled my love. I hope you guys understand my feelings and please be sensitive. dont make everything in life as joke. thanks.

the only thing why i wrote that is because new yorker's story comes straight out of some bollywood love story
i think he saw that movie yesterday and came out with this big story
but he narrated it so well that I think he should be a story writer and give competition to javed akhthar and others in bollywood :laugh:

unfortunately, i wasn't the little girl on the rickshaw (but how cute would it be if i was?!?) i never went to school in india...:o

but as desi as I am , I am begining to get worried because he is loosing his indian identity
his heroes are spiderman, sponge bob square pants , yugiho kids , mr incredible etc etc
and he does not speak my language though we speak our language at home all the time

here is my advice...
let him keep going the way he is. listen to the indian music and watch the movies...and he'll pick things up, and eventually, he'll realize that it is so important and he'll develop his own interest in the culture...

(but what do i know...i don't have any kids!)
one other thing, make sure he has indian friends his own age. i can't think of a better way to make it easy for him to integrate his indian heritage and surrounding american culture. i'd think that'd make for a good buffer/social support system for him.

and, as you say, you can't "make" him indian. he won't be. he's indian-american, and while that may not make you completely happy, it'll be far worse if you force things onto him and he lashes out against you or takes a path through life you dont' want him to take.

i don't have any kids, either. that i know of. so there's that.

Upbringing plays a major role in the cultural development of the kid. It is good that you guys talk in an indian language at home. I think the early years of childhood are very very crucial. You are a parent, don't make it easy for yourself, if you want the best from your kid in the future. Play your role, play it smart. If you have joined an indian community yourself, make sure that he gets to hang out with other indian kids. That community should certainly have a religious thing. For one, I saw your kid in garba dress in the pic. Encourage those kind of social functions. Like parasite mentioned, take him to india during his holidays, take pictures, have him look at them time and again, so that his pleasant memories attached with with india will get further reinforced in his mind. It is important that those memories develop because as he grows up he will be able to make more connections. The process will eventually lead in him being proud of being a indian and not opposing the culture. When you tell him something is not right, explain to him why it is not right. I am sure that since you are a modern generation parent, you believe in explaining things logically and satiatingly rather than scolding yelling and hitting. I would exemplify the process of ingraining the cultral values by comparing it to how over time people start prefering McDonalds to fresh fruits. People take their kids to McDonals since the age of one, have them relish the taste of fries and voila, fries are a life long commitment, doing utterly no good to the soul or the spirit. Getting addicted to Mcdonals is like getting addicted to cigarette. the receptors just wont do without a Big Mac anymore and orange juice which is easily grossed upon over 10 spoons of sugary soda. Take the responsibility. I am sure you have a awesome wife who'll cook yummy food for your kid rather than feeding the garbage 3$ fast food.
I have seen many of my indian accomplices who are more indian than I am, even though they were born in the US. Its the role of the parents thats so crucial. If you let him select his way, he'll stumble in the way. He'll take time figuring out what is right for himself.. Well then I ask, what are parents for? Don't be one of those careless parents who care only about money and ignore their cute little saplings who need to be nurtured and supported since day one, until the day out of teens. When he tries to employ his own methods and tastes,and you dont like them, employ methods and plans that will make him think against it. Be a friend, not a hitler person who is dominating. kids tend to oppose dominating behaviors and tend to embrace what their friends have to say... get to his level of intelligence and express them in the same way..let it be fun and not a cage for him. He'll love you for all this as a kid and as an adult.

hey priyanka , you look like a very matured person ,
very good tips on bringing up a child
i am sure you would prove yourself to be an excellent mother
I want my son to get good points from both the western and indian culture
we keep the atmosphere at home as much indian as we can
also he has lots of indian friends in his school
yesterday we took him to an south indian restaurant and when he tasted paper masala dosa, he said ," Dad this is the best indian food I have ever had", it is so yummy!!!!
as priyanka said correctly , you can get addicted to mcdonalds like you get addicted to cigarettes,
and you are also right in suggesting that we parents should not be very dominating because the kid would not like that and will eventually rebel against us
i should constantly feed him on what are good things and what are bad things in life
All I want folks is that my son becomes a good human being and values the importance of life and love and be caring to others

hey, just wanted to say about bringing up children in US -

my parents taught me to respect other cultures, food, religions.. we always had different people at our house visiting, etc. so when i grew up i had friends from different countries,e tc but i also grew strong in my faith and culture. now people who just come from india are surprised that i am the way i am. they think that i'm more indian than them!! and can't figure out why... but this is my choice..
not all of american culture is bad just as not all of indian culture is good. i know i'm over simplyfying.. but my parents taught me the differences and to respect different people and i hope to instill the same in my daughter.
i have worn sarees and churidars to parties... some people appreciate the clothes some don't... i don't waste time with those who don't...
i do educate the ones who are interested. i have friends who are christian, hindu, muslim and jain. from india and from other countries. hopefully i will be able to teach my daughter as my parents did.. if i can do half the job they did with me,,, i'll be happy.
funny isn't it, in learning to appreciate the differences, i have become stronger in my own identity and faith...

well....isn't the indian society a mixture of all kinds of ppl ?? the younger generation in cities r open i guess.....but i think that those in the towns or villages have yet to undergo that transformation....think an indian girl (what about a guy ??!) in a small town would go to ...lets say....a disco ? i dunno if i'm rite ...but i think the answer would b no.....
well....this may come as a bit of surprise but there r a lot of discos even in small towns in india.....ofcourse they r a little bit indianised but they do exist!!!

hey.... just to let you know - i grew up in india(for 17 years!!)! so i know the culture very well thankyou... you seem to forget that there are all kinds of people in india just as there are in any other country. i just meant that his family is not very open - mostly because they haven't been exposed to other cultures and as such he was surprised to see me with friends from other countries - very good friends whom i trust to this day.

I am not sure whether it is appropriate to write my personal feelings in an internet forum read by thousands of anonymous good and bad people. I have hardly written letters to anyone in my life. I have written a couple of letters to my dad who lives in india. My dad replied to my letters by marking the grammatical mistakes i committed in my letters to him ( in red ink) and wrote how sad he felt after reading my letter with gross grammar mistakes. well, comparing aarti to monalisa is like comparing Newyorker with Romeo. I think aarti's picture is more beautiful than monalisa. monalisa did not have guts to show her teeth though. It was a dressed up smile..aarti's smile is a naked smile with utter confidence.i simply love it.

As you brought up the grey matter issue- did you hear about the research study comparing grey matter of men and women?

American neuroscience researchers have proved without doubt that women have less grey cells than men. That is the reason they have less mathematical abilities excetras. excetras. In summary, they are not as smart as men.( according to me this study excludes aarti from other women)

Even Harvard president has confirmed this statement even before this study result was published. I want to stress that this is not my personal opinion.
I am quoting only scientific evidence. I dunno why i am thinking abt parasite while reviewing this study. may be scientists are right.

I am born and raised in denmark, and this is why I chose to study medicine here. Desipite this, I am Indian at heart:-) I can imagine it would be difficult to complete an M.D. degree in denmark without being fluent in danish (since all our lectures and classes are in danish).

I am not sure where I want to practice medicine in the future. The States have crossed my mind, but they are not my frist priority. I might even stay in denmark for the rest of my career.

Very pleased to hear about you offering free dental services :D
If my research project is a success and gets published (I hope it will be) I will be sure to provide my colleagues on SDN with the link :)

As I said, we're looking at how acute hyperglycaemia occuring immediately after SAH affects outcome. It is a well-known fact that hyperglycemia aggrevates ischemic neuronal damage due to the lactate-induced acidosis. In vitro studies have shown that glucose per se can be damaging to neuronal cells. Since we're using rat models, we will measure outcome using in vivo microdialysis (which uses the principle of diffusion to gather a sample representative of the extracellular fluid).

We will induce a subarachnoidal hemorrhage in the rats by injecting blood from the heart or the jugular vein into the subarachnoidal space through the cisterna magna. Afterwards we will inject either inject the rats with glucose/saline or destroy their beta-cells using streptozotocin. After this we will bore a hole in the skull of the rat and place a probe in the corpus striatum.

Two days after we will gather ECF samples from the rat brain using microdialysis. By looking at certain parameteres such as glucose, pyruvate, lactate, glycerol and glutamate we can see how hyperglycaemia has affected the brain mileau as compared to normoglycaemia.

We don't perform any sort of scans.

Not much to say about Denmark. I haven't really been to north america yet, so it is difficult for me to compare. Denmark is alot like Great Britain in many respects.

You have been working with head trauma patients? Please tell us more. Are you currently a medical student in NY?

Do u have other indian medstudents in your class? In america..there are so many medstudents of indian origin. they rule!

I am not aware of any CT-scans for rodents, but there might be. However I don't think there's much potential in such scans, since it's far easier to just open the whole damn thing and see what's inside. :D

Unfortunately there aren't so many Indians at my university. We're some 3000 students, and I suppose there are around 10-15 indians. Yeah I've heard america is loaded with indians. Must be really good to be surrounded by so many indians at school. :thumbup:

What is ugliness? I dont consider anyone is ugly to my eyes. As i said in my deleted post yesterday everyday i learn about life and get maturity every single day.

Today i saw this patient in my clinic 34 year old man with severe burning facial pain who could not sleep, could not eat properly and cannot lead normal life. He got this maxillary facial tumor with spreading mets which has distorted his face after multiple facial surgeries. Now, he is suffering from complex regional pain syndrome. He wears mask to cover his mid face and wears sunglasses because to avoid exposure keratitis. He cannot close his eyes because of lid surgeries. People like him are high risk of suicide.
His wife has divorced him.

His 80 year old father brings him to regular appointments. You cannot see him for more than 2 mins because it disturbs you and makes you sad. he still lives with hope that some doctor could help to reduce his pain. My heart shed tears for this unfortunate guy. He is one of the kind of case who is going to remain im memory for a very long time.

Do i feel envy towards those hottest indian males like salman butt khan or arjun dick rampal? not anymore! Am i depressed for not having sculpted nose like hritik? Do i give a F&*# about not having a candy face or butter butt? I am just happy for what i have. I believe in my brains more than fragile looks.

Honestly, this has to be the most ridiculous crap I have ever read in my life. If you are seriously, seriously resorting to this as a way of finding your life partner, then you have issues.

I am curious to know, why are you making this so public? Im not trying to get anybody riled up....its so true. My mom always sees me going out with non-Indian girls and gets mad at me.....but I tell her that 99% of Indian girls are so sheltered and protected by their parents, they really dont have any life experiences and thus have very little personalities and they become like the people in this thread....clueless losers with horrid sense of humours.

Also, I tend to see Indian girls (and just Indian people in general) always hang out with other Indian people....now there is nothing wrong with having friends within your culture, but gimme a break...its almost always exclusively Indian people hanging out together. ANd the result? Indian people are just not cultured outside of the Indian culture....

sorry, I guess its a personal preference, but to me, there are other wonderful cultures out there other than the Indian culture, and that shows with my friends and girlfriends....its always been a cultural mosaic with me.

It would be nice to just meet an Indian girl who wasnt controlled by her parents for her whole life, actually knows stuff other than whats in science textbooks, independent (thats a big one which will be impossible to find), and is well-cultured (well-travelled would be the best way to do that in my opinion). Does that girl exist? Im sure...but its just a Needle in a haystack my friends....

i was gone for sometime... had to have a lap chole done! i didn't fit the profile so the docs had some difficulty even with the ultrasound showing the stones! it was quite educational!! :D

My wife is too shy to come on a public forum and besides she is ultra busy as she is a full time student at Mcmaster university in hamilton which is about 2 hours one way from where I live , She is doing a Medical Laboratory Technologist course and will be finishing in June
Besides that She has to do the cooking as I only know how to make "omlette"

Hey guys, I realised that I never really introduced myself :idea: ( I guess, I just barged in..... :o ). Well, looking at my username you might think I am a guy (I remember newyorker calling me brother....), but I am a gal and the username is my son's name. :) Before I rarely visited India forum for the reasons others mentioned (I guess I agree with some of the "Villans" on this thread :laugh: ). After I started reading the love story, I just wanted to see the progress. And now I think it is one BAD love story between a psychologically impaired person and a sweet young lady( Newyorker Kinda reminds me of Sharuk in Dar. :laugh: ). people have called New yorker all kinds of things ranging from "mentally deranged, looser, sick,insane,gutless,etc etc but we have to admit one thing about him
he has the power to attract many people to read his long stories
that is why this thread which started as a picture thread has become a big love story and like a soap opera,people come to see what will happen next??

of course nobody is taking it seriously

Also I did my undergrad at the University of Toronto - Erindale campus which was basically a 100% Indian university...wouldnt call that a closeted community....but it was always teh same story with every Indian person I met.....a funny stereotype if you will...and still...never met one "worldly" person...

I appreciate your honesty. I myself feel that i have some obsession over this and have admitted before that i suffer from minor OCD. Actually this OCD had helped me in my career. Studies have proved minor OCD is cool.
I also suffer from Narcisstic personality disorder.
Give me some hints tinker regarding my pursuance. It is OK people hurt my feelings all the time.

Perhaps your right....everyone at my uni was basically caught up with getting into med or law school that they simply had no life....but its weird that when I goto Indian family functions, most Indian kids were the same, so I just assumed that this was a common thing among Indians...

Actually, Toronto has the most Sri Lankans outside of Sri Lanka and one of the largest Indian population outside of India. IT also has the most Italians outside of Italy and the second most Greeks outside of Greece. Also, more people speak Mandarin as their native tongue than English in Toronto.

According to the United nations, Toronto is the most culturally diverse city in the world (not NYC like most people think).

well, we hang out with everyone (don't have to be indians). we do other stuff than just going to those indian parties/clubs. we can pretty much relate to most cultures and have a good time with other non-indian ppl.

myself...i've traveled a lot and lived in two other countries.
btw i know a lot of indians (in my undergrad) who hung out with only indians but that's probably just because they feel like they can relate more with each other. nothing wrong with that, right? :idea:

Also I did my undergrad at the University of Toronto - Erindale campus which was basically a 100% Indian university...wouldnt call that a closeted community....but it was always teh same story with every Indian person I met.....a funny stereotype if you will...and still...never met one "worldly" person...

well, we hang out with everyone (don't have to be indians). we do other stuff than just going to those indian parties/clubs. we can pretty much relate to most cultures and have a good time with other non-indian ppl.

myself...i've traveled a lot and lived in two other countries.
btw i know a lot of indians (in my undergrad) who hung out with only indians but that's probably just because they feel like they can relate more with each other. nothing wrong with that, right? :idea:

Well I think I had already mentioned this in another thread, but I think of myself as a globetrekker.....I love independent travelling and just grabbing a backpack and backpacking around different countries.....I am very fond of visiting and studying rural areas, because they are usually untouched and display the utmost extreme of most cultures...plus the people in rural areas are extremely friendly and welcoming......staying at a strangers home, hitchiking, going to dinner with locals you just meet....doing stuff like that and not the typical touristy stuff really allows one to experience a certain culture I have found....

I have backpacked to 27 different countries so far, and have lived in 5 different countries. I plan on travelling to tons more countries and am currently doing a dual dental degree with a focus in International pediatric dental public health so I can spend my entire career abroad and working with children of different cultures. I have had so many adventures and life experiences along the way and have met so many people from around the world. I have plenty of friends around the globe, and as I already mentioned, my friends at home are a cultural mosaic from all parts of the world.

I am extremely proud to be Indian-Canadian, and I think the most rewarding thing is to teach my friends from around the world about the Indian culture.

So hopefully that answers your question aarti.

i have travelled to 20 countries, and am adding spain to the list (im leaving next friday) and greece (in march). i dated a white guy for 4 yrs, and then an indian guy for almost a yr. the white guy is a great guy who im still friends with, while the indian guy is an *******. that doesn't mean all indian guys are *******s...just cuz 1 was. it seems like you got burned by 1 indian girl, and are now bitter at all of us. and yeah i hang out with indians, but i hang out with tons of other people too. i lived with indians my last 2 yrs in college, and it just a different experience. this is the indian forum so we are OBVIOUSLY going to be talking about indian stuff.

and no one on this thread has said ONCE even that they are only doing med/dental/pharm b/c their parents wanted them to. :thumbdown

Yeah I'm in high school. Well it can't hurt to start too early right? I'll be attending MIT next fall (early admission) and am pretty scared about the pre-med process.

haha..to make this more cryptic for people who don't know what we are talking about:

i have nothing against that girl. i honestly have never talked to her or had any real interactions around her. she just acted all wierd around me b/c of said guy. but i honestly have no thoughts on her (good or bad). (although i do hear lots of bad from people, and not just the guy). me and the guy don't talk anymore, and its so much better that way. :D :thumbup:

i can kind of play a dhol. my younger brother learns tabla and is pretty good. i play a lot of instruments so im sure i can pick up some indian instruments even though the scales are different.
