View Full Version : Tulane Class of 2009
stinkycheese 12-27-2004, 01:17 PM So I'll be the dork-ass who starts this thread. Who's coming to Tulane next year? :) (I can almost say "this year!" Freaky...)
I am going to Tulane and couldn't be more excited. I didn't think I had a shot in hell but for some reason, they took me. Where are you all thinking of living? I hear the Garden district is nice, and near the Uptown campus... I really don't know anything about NOLA neighborhoods though, since everytime I've been there, I've stayed in the French Quarter :)
I can't wait to hear from some of my future classmates!
vikaskoth 12-27-2004, 01:50 PM i guess i'll be the first the first dork to reply
I go to Tulane undergrad, and i live uptown right near the main campus. Uptown is a nice area and there are more and cheaper living options here than downtown. Garden district is nice also, closer to downtown, had a friend jus buy a place there, haven't seen it yet. neighborhoods in new orleans are weird, one street will be fine and the next block or the next street over will be a little junky. If you think a place looks shady it proally is, i guess try and talk to people in the area to see if how they like their living situation.

first and second dork!  gotta love those double-posts!
vikaskoth 12-27-2004, 02:10 PM hey, I'll be the first dork to reply. I'm a tulane undergrad and i live right off campus, uptown. Lots of students live uptown, and there are a variety of places to live, shotgun's, apts, split houses. Last year i lived in an apt uptown about 1 mile from campus but it happened that the block i lived on wasn't very nice, but if you went two blocks away in other directions the area was fine. This happens all over new orleans so uptown has its bad spots and good one as does garden district and other areas of new orleans.

no worries, it happens to me, too. that's why i was joking about it ;)
hnbui 12-27-2004, 02:44 PM Tulane is what you make of it. I'm part of class 2008. Like many from the forums already know i'm not really happy here, but that's just from many experiences i have had with the school and the city. Some of my best friends at tulane love the school.
As for the city.... since i ama native of new orleans i can say that the garden district is very very expensive. It would be better if you stay in the dorm first year and then find a aprtament somewhere close to the school. Partying is a big thing at tulane so if you arepremed you will have to plan out your time wisely.
As for the crime. It is high. Now everyone says, oh but every city has crime. That's what many of my friends said too before coming to tulane. But they have changed their minds now. Even though the campus is located in a good part of town there is still a crime every night. Every day you see a new yellow flyer posted in the elevators, etc... stating how a tulane/newcomb college student was robbed at gun point or how a tulane kid was hit on a head with a gun and had blood everywhere. There was even a flyer stating how a group of tulane college students were robbed by two armed men.
The campus is kind of freaky at night to. I'm a guy and i always feel the need to double check to see if there's anyone following me.
Hope that helps. PM me if you want to know the dish about tulane. or need help with class selection.
stinkycheese 12-27-2004, 05:28 PM Thanks hnbui but I was talking about the medical school class. I am a bit worried about all the crime. I am not as worried about the expense of living in a certain area because coming from where I am from (NYC), nothing in NOLA seems expensive to me :) I am looking forward to hearing from more future Tulane med students.

oh yeah sorry my bad.
MechE 12-27-2004, 08:09 PM I have an interview at Tulane for March 9th. For those who have already interviewed there: what did you like and dislike about the school?
pbehzad 12-27-2004, 10:58 PM well I interviewed at Tulane on 12/17, and will hear prolly mid-January. Tulane was amazing, and definitely became one of my top choices after the interview. The only thing im concerned about is whether the price is worth it. The school and the students are all great. Clinicals at Tulane have to be some of the best in the country (charity hospital is ridiculous). I had never been to NO before my interivew, but it seemed like a real cool place to live for 4 years and I think it gets a bad rep for being a dirty city. The students were real cool and seemd to love the school. Match list was pretty impressive too.
Good luck on interview.
Davina3000 12-28-2004, 08:32 AM Yay, this thread is finally active! :)
I'm pretty sure that I will be at Tulane in the fall. I loved the program and the people there. I also liked what I saw of New Orleans. It seems like everyone I talk to either loves New Orleans and is jealous that I may be living there, or hates it and is horrified that I may subject myself to that lifestyle. Not much grey area in people's minds about this city I guess. Anyway, it's the one and only place I've been accepted thus far, so I figure I don't have much say in the matter right now and it's better to be excited about the move than fearful and dreading the next 4 years of my life.
I'm planning on visiting in March and looking for a house in the Garden District/Uptown. I've been looking a little online, but it's obviously really hard to get a feel for what the neighborhoods are like that way. Anyone out there with any good pointers or resources?
Good luck to those still waiting. :luck:
stinkycheese 12-28-2004, 10:00 AM I have experienced the same thing when telling people that I'm moving to NOLA. Either they think it's the greatest thing ever, or they think it's a filthy dangerous city that will be miserable to live in. But I really don't care. I am sure there are safe areas to be found and that NOLA is going to be a great place to train. I love Tulane and am really psyched to start. I am also going down in March over spring break to look at places in the Garden district and Uptown. I hope to meet up with some current Tulane meds to ask their advice about where to live. If anyone has any pointers on specific areas to look within the garden district or near the undergrad campus, let us know!
vikaskoth 12-28-2004, 09:08 PM When looking for places in new orleans, the Gambit Weekly website has lots of listings, just search on yahoo or google. Also i used Later&Blum realtors, their website has lots of listings that you can tailor your search for certain areas and prices. Prudential Gardner is another bigger realtor in new orleans. There are some smaller local ones, but if you want to look at stuff online i would start by visiting some of these sites.
adamj61 12-28-2004, 09:31 PM I will hopefully be trying to do this in march or may...rock on for being able to have time to decide where to live.
stinkycheese 12-28-2004, 09:57 PM Hey Adam, hope it works out for you. Keep us posted. And keep letting Dr. Kahn know of your interest - he really cares about having people in the class who love Tulane!!

if you got into UW and tulane, would you choose tulane over your state school? you have to admit wisconsin is a great school for a great price. tulane is def a great school but at a big financial cost. personally, i think tulane's uniqueness makes up for a lot of that cost
akpete 12-29-2004, 10:36 AM may I have an interview please?
susan96 12-29-2004, 01:02 PM I have an interview on Jan 20, and I was wondering if this is considered late in the game for Tulane...would I still be interviewing for a spot, or is more for a waitlist spot? I'm super excited about my interview, and I hope that it is a chance to actually get in! :D

I have heard that they have enough letters of acceptance to fill the class, but not all of those people are necessarily going to end up at Tulane, so I am sure they will be accepting more people as time goes on. It just depends on how much they want to overaccept, and how cautious they want to play it. :) Good luck.

gotigers 12-29-2004, 06:06 PM hey there--
i'm a proud incoming member of the class of '09! you go-getters are already looking for housing?? i'm just so thankful to have gotten in that i'm still smoking my celebtratory cigar and doing my happy dance. should i be apartment-shopping already?? if so, what's the best way to start looking around new orleans when you're stuck up in the frigid midwest? thanks!
stinkycheese 12-29-2004, 08:59 PM hey there! I'm not really doing a serious housing search already but am trying to get a feel for the areas that would be good to look in when I go down in march :) My advice if you can't make it to NOLA for awhile is to just get the advice of someone from the area that you trust. I hope this spring semester goes fast, because I am ready to staaaaarrrrrtttttttt....
Davina3000 12-30-2004, 06:11 AM hey there--

Definitely still doing my happy dance as well! :)
I don't think you *need* to be looking for housing yet. To be honest, I'm currently just using it as a fun way to kill time at work ;)
I'm planning on moving early summer (my lease here is up in June, so that would be the latest), so I figured that March would be a good time to start. If you're not moving until later in the summer, you probably don't have to think about it yet.
Then again, if I were currently frozen somewhere in the midwest, I might just pack up and move to NOLA right now....

Benign_foodtube 12-30-2004, 12:11 PM Hey you guys-- what is the match list, and list for percentage of Tulane U SoM grads who get their #1/#2 choice for residency? Is there some online resource that allows one to compare medschools in terms of residency matching/percentages? Please hep me!
I gotta tell ya, I love Tulane too, and have been lucky enough to be accepted. The price is the only part I flinch at.
For all going in for an interview soon-- all I can say is be honest about your excitement and love for the school, if you do indeed click with it. More than for any other program, Tulane's Administration seems responsive to people who really love the school, city and program. And good luck! :luck: :luck:
Davina3000 12-31-2004, 06:05 AM There is a link to Tulane's 2004 match list on this site: www.som.tulane.edu/studentaffairs
That's all the info I have. It's my understanding that the schools no longer receive the information on what percentage of their students get which numerical choice for the match, so I think any stats that are thrown around about this are at least 3 years old anyway.

BIG Ditto! I imagine expressing this interest will also be what moves people off the waitlist. Good luck to everyone! :luck:
boomuntilnoon 12-31-2004, 09:15 AM Howdy y'all...
Kudos to my future classmates! We are in for an unforgettable 4+ years... I hope I don't fail out from having too much fun down there, but hey, if we can conquer New Orleans, then I reckon we can accomplish anything! :)
I actually was accepted last year, but deferred so that I could pursue a couple of my life-long dreams before busting my ass for the next few years.
Any of y'all want to be roommates? I want to live in a loft, or some place with a balcony/patio.
stinkycheese 12-31-2004, 12:25 PM I'm really messy and have pets, so I am not a good roommate, but I *would* be interested in living in the same building as some other med students. I figure if a bunch of people want to get studios or one-beds and we find an apartment building that has a lot of vacancies for the fall, we can make a little unofficial "dorm", but with more privacy and space and a better location than deming :)
Benign_foodtube 12-31-2004, 05:19 PM That sounds like a great idea, actually. I don't know how good a housemate I am either, but gettin a bunch of rooms somewhere in an apartment complex to have the ole unofficial dorm/co op sounds like a great plan. Is the French Quarter outta the question because of prices? Even if on the periphery, the French Quarter is such a fantastic place to live.
Also-- are any of y'all thinking about going down in April/May instead, and doing the MD/MPH thing? An MD/MPH in four years sounds like a pretty sweet gig. What with what's goin down in Asia right now, it seems painfully obvious how increasingly important public health is becoming.
stinkycheese 01-02-2005, 09:29 AM Hey there people! I don't know much about the French Quarter other than the fact that I really like those shops with the alcoholic slushies :) As for living there, I don't know - everyone seems to really rave about living in the Garden district in terms of convenience and safety. We should really compare and get some more native New Orleans people into this thread so we can pick their brains. Hope you all had a good new year!
Davina3000 01-02-2005, 09:47 AM I'm thinking about doing the MD/MPH too. Anybody currently doing this option at Tulane who cares to comment? My main concern is that taking an extra class every semester will be a hassle and that I will want to use my summer between 1st and 2nd years for something other than classes. I'm going to be in N.O. in May and the summer classes don't look so bad (most of them seem to run only for the month of June, according to last summer's MPH schedule), but I just know I will feel differently about spending my summer free time in classes after completing a year of med school classes and not having any free time to travel etc. Plus, stats was my least favorite class undergrad, I don't know if I can stomach taking it again :(
Anyway, I don't know about living in the French Quarter, I think that may be a little too much for me...I'm hoping to have a little house with a fenced area for my dog, and I think I may have a better shot at that Uptown. I'm coming with roommates allready (husband and dog :p ) but I think stinkycheese's idea of trying to get a bunch of us in the same building/neighborhood would be great.
And Happy New Year everyone!
stinkycheese 01-02-2005, 10:15 AM My reservations about the MD/MPH are similar to Davina's. I want to spend the summer b/w my first and second year doing research or clinical work -- not taking more classes :) I also really like Tulane's commitment to early clinical education and want to spend any free time I have (as if I am going to have free time :) ) doing clinical electives. But I admire all of those who are doing the MPH. It's very cool to be able to get both degrees in four years.
Like I said before... I would love to get a bunch of us in the same neighborhood or building. Let's all keep in touch! I am going down in March to look around... woohoo!
clinick 01-02-2005, 07:32 PM Hey Guys - c/o 2009 here. I was hanging out with some students after my interview, and was taken to a really amazing apartment complex with a pool! I heard that it was only $50 a month more than living in Deming - so THAT is where I am planning on living (I'll post the name of the complex once I get it - I'll have to call the guy back).
And one more thing - as far as Tulane and the price. The plan right now is still to go to Tulane (seeing as my interview at UAB is in a few weeks..) because of this: average MCAT 31, average GPA 3.5. MCAT is high, GPA is low. Why is that? My theory: After my interview, I was drinking at a bar at 3pm on a Thursday with a couple current med students. It was a freakin' week day and the afternoon. These kids are partiers! Hence the lower undergraduate GPA. So I'm sticking with Tulane despite the price, because I want to have fun dammit. I think that Tulane is about as fun as medical school gets.
-Camille
Benign_foodtube 01-03-2005, 06:24 AM Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice! Yes, please keep us posted as to what the name of that apt complex is. That sounds perty good... Where is it located? French Quarter? Garden District? Please give a hollar whenever you find out about it.
I dunno if anyone else is going down there before March, but if not, you gotta scope that one out, Stinkycheese, and let us know how it is up close and personal.
Thanks for the 411 on that, Camille!

Yes, partying + laid back attitude about life = lower undergraduate GPA. I think mine would have been at least 0.3 higher (I'm a <3.5-er) if I didn't have so many undergrad nights spent with jose cuervo and friends. But then I wouldnt' have so many fond memories (and I'll admit it, non-memories too :p ) of the experience. I'm definitely attracted to Tulane b/c the students there seem to be this way as well.
Hope you decide on Tulane Camille :)
stinkycheese 01-03-2005, 11:47 AM Hell yeah guys, I am down for that apartment complex! If Camille posts the address I will most certainly be checkin the place out in March :) I will probably be able to take pictures too, so I'll post those here.
I also really like the laid-back attitude of the students at Tulane. I need to go to a place where people aren't constantly stress balls! I think I found a good one in Tulane :)
bbawco1 01-03-2005, 01:46 PM Hey guys,
I'm a T1 here at Tulane and wouldn't mind clearing up any questions ya'll have about the area/school/whatever.
Here's some jewels about housing:
I live uptown on St. Charles Ave. and a ton of our class lives uptown too. Personally, I would not live anywhere else b/c it is a part of the city that has a ton of culture. The best thing to do is to just come down here and pick up a newspaper or a gambit weekly (you can get this off the web) and take a look at all the places. I think ya'll may have been referring to the Saulet earlier which a few people live in. It is sort of a ready made and furnished place that is quite close to school. It reminds me of the big apartment complexes that was all over my undergrad. The apartments uptown (not the saulet which is in the werehouse district) can get pretty nice with high ceilings and traditional wood floors for a pretty decent price. They are mostly homes that have been broken up into separate apartments.
As far as safety, you have to be careful to check out the streets around the apartments you look at b/c new orleans is famous for having million dollar homes on one street and a bad neighborhood on the next.
Anyways, if ya'll have any questions shoot.

Thanks for the advice bbawco1. Which part of St. Charles do you think is better to live around? I've been focusing on the end close to Tulane's undergrad campus...is there good housing to be found in the other direction as well?
Do you have any inside information on the new facilities classes may be held in next year? Any thoughts on the MD/MPH program?
Thanks!
gotigers 01-04-2005, 09:12 AM here's a question that can basically be translated as: "how soon can i quit my ****ty job without feeling guilty..."
what's a respectable time to move down to NO before actually starting school? when do leases generally begin down there? come on now, i can't be the only one working at a sub shop counting the days...
NomadGL 01-04-2005, 09:39 AM This is an old topic, but I have an interview at Tulane next week and I was wondering if someone can tell me what is unique about Tulane or why you decided to attend Tulane.

 I love it! This is exactly what I am trying to figure out. If I had known that I was going to be accepted in October, I never would have taken this job....sigh....hindsight
Davina3000 01-04-2005, 10:40 AM This is an old topic, but I have an interview at Tulane next week and I was wondering if someone can tell me what is unique about Tulane or why you decided to attend Tulane.
Congrats on your interview! The one and only thing I spoke about during my interview regarding why I wanted to come to Tulane was that I had heard great things about the students and the general atmosphere there (I used some wonderful adjectives here, that have since slipped my mind). I also mentioned that I had spent some time in New Orleans and liked the city. If you are truly excited about Tulane and want to end up there, let them know. There are obviously unique opportunities to be had at Charity and Tulane's Tropical Medicine program as well if you are looking for something more concrete.
Good luck! :luck:
clinick 01-04-2005, 11:04 AM Hey Guys - the apartment complex I was talking about was in fact, the Saulet. It looked awesome, and the apartment I was in seemed really nice.
And for the person with the upcoming interivew: I think what made Tulane unique was that everyone seemed happy to be there.
Benign_foodtube 01-04-2005, 01:51 PM Thanks to all for keeping the housing forum issues alive-- I think we all appreciate the housing 411 and offers to scope stuff out in person. I think the informal dorm idea is freegin awesome.
As for the job thing, this is how you quit it: F#ck'em, that's how. Unless you are in that rare position of having a compassionate and caring boss/manager/supervisor/team, then it is not a sticky situation. My managers, for example, would have no problem using me for their own ends and comfort, to be a tool of the machine, or mandate me for an extra 8hrs after an 8 hour ER shift, becuase they themselves do not want to work. You shouldn't feel bad for looking out for your own personal/mental space and well-being, and I think being a little selfish with the last lil bit of time you have before the maelstrom of medschool is completely warranted. If you do however have a gentle-spirited boss or someone who really stuck their neck out for you to get you the job, anticipating your presence there until summer, then just take some extra time to explain your situation, apologize, and express gratitude.
Or maybe I'm just an @sshole. Hmmm... I wouldn't put it past me.
Anyway, good luck with it. :)
dopaminophile 01-04-2005, 01:58 PM I'm interviewing on the 20th as well! Is the general consensus that the class is filled or do we still have a shot? If you think the former is correct, what's that based on?
cheers,
dope
bbawco1 01-05-2005, 08:26 AM About which side of the uptown St. Charles to live on varies quite a bit. As you get closer to downtown however it does start to get a little shady and much more commercial. And usually the riverside (southside) is a bit less shady than the lakeside of st. charles.
The MD/MPH is a great opportunity and is definitely one of those "might as well" kind of things for a lot of students here. I did not do it however mostly b/c it required getting more letters of recommendation from my undergrad which I was kind of over. It also costs a decent chunk of money at the end to actually get the degree.
The facilities next year are supposedly going to be awesome. The whole part of the building we bought (9 floors I believe) is supposed to be only for students. And we could definitely use a more aesthetically pleasing building!! You can google (image) 1555 poydras and the first picture is the one of our new building.
hope this helps...YA'LL
Benign_foodtube 01-06-2005, 06:31 AM Thank you so much, bbawco1, for the heads up on N'awlins livin. I'm psyched as hell about the new facilities, too! It's supposed to be up and running this year right?
How tech-y is Tulane in general? I know we are not required to have a laptop or anything, but is there a good focus on tech-in-medicine, the use of handheld devices, the surgery robot, digital radiology images, etc?
And also-- is it a bad idea.com to bring one's car with em to N.O.? When I lived in San Francisco, I loved having may car with me, but it was also a massive pain in the @ss, becuse it was daily parking problems, friends asking to borrow 8 days a week, break-ins because there is no private garage space, not to mention so many parking tickets because haters roll around in those cushman ticket-mobiles like whoever gives the most tickets wins a cheesecake. What's the skinny on havin a car in New Orleans?
bbawco1 01-06-2005, 08:12 AM about bringing your car to new orleans....I definitely could not do without it. Unless you live in Deming (the dorms) public transportation is reliable if you don't mind getting anywhere on time (i.e. the french quarter/bourbon st.) but for school and public service I would say you definitely need a ride. Some people don't have cars but they are always trying to get rides. Parking does suck but most students pay like 60 or 65 bucks a month and park about a block away. I don't know what the parking will be like next year though b/c the new building is further away from the current parking.
As far as techy-tulane...laptops are not required however I would have a hard time functioning b/c everything is online and I study away from home at the uptown coffeeshops. They convert the class schedules to be downloadable on PDAs and a few people use them as planners mostly but I'm sure that will change 3rd year. We have a surgery model that I have not seen/used yet... and last but not least during there is a radiology program that we can use to study from online.
Alrighty,
peace out
Benign_foodtube 01-06-2005, 08:32 AM about bringing your car to new orleans....I definitely could not do without it. Davina3000 01-06-2005, 10:10 AM Thanks for all the info bbawco1! The new building looks great. Almost too nice to be a university building, but whatever, I'll take it. Are all of our classes going to be there, including labs? I have a hard time picturing them moving cadavers into that beautiful building, especially since there are other tenants using it as well.
stinkycheese 01-06-2005, 10:30 AM The new building is beautiful! I was also wondering how they will deal with the anatomy lab. Either way, it is really exciting to have new space. :) Thanks for all the helpful tips on this thread! When I go in March, I will scope out as many housing places as possible, with pics. Hopefully we'll all find well-priced, nice housing without too much trouble. I cannot wait to visit NOLA again. :)

Here is the website with the picture (I think):

You have to search under the Images category off of the google search page.
Are you heading to Tulane in the fall as well?
bbawco1 01-06-2005, 02:47 PM As I understand all the labs will still be held in the old building and I think there will be a shuttle to and from the buildings. Also, the new student lounge supposedly looks over the Superdome which is immediately across the street. Good stuff!!!
vikaskoth 01-07-2005, 06:46 PM I'm interviewing on the 20th as well! Is the general consensus that the class is filled or do we still have a shot? If you think the former is correct, what's that based on?
cheers,
dope
dope, you definitely still have a chance, Tulanes pre-med society had some lsu and tulane med students hold a discussion panel and almost all of the Tulane ones were accepted after Jan. Tulane gets over 6000 apps, and while the class might have a lot of acceptances now, i think there will be a fair amt of withdrawals too, Cause i've heard of people interviewing as late as april and may at other schools and still receiving acceptances.
clinick 01-08-2005, 10:32 PM Q: I was a little concerned after reading a past post on this thread. I'm getting a new car for graduation -- how concerned should I be about theft? Do I need LoJack or a club for New Orleans?
stinkycheese 01-08-2005, 10:42 PM Q: I was a little concerned after reading a past post on this thread. I'm getting a new car for graduation -- how concerned should I be about theft? Do I need LoJack or a club for New Orleans?
I would say it depends on where you're living and what your parking situation is. It can't hurt to get a club, or maybe go with LoJack if you're parking in an open area most of the time (as opposed to a garage). I am going to look for a building with a garage probably so that my car isn't out in the open all the time. We'll see what I can find when I go to NOLA to case the joint in March :)
vikaskoth 01-09-2005, 12:19 AM i dont have a club, i have a similar device that you put on to cover the brake pedal. I used it last year when i had no off street parking to my place. This year I do and i only pull it out if i park on the street somewhere at night. It was $40 so not a bad idea. The thing about new orleans is just to use common sense in most areas. Once your here for 2-3 months you should be able to judge what places are alright and which are not.
Lester 01-09-2005, 02:03 PM Another New Orleans native here - I think it's a great city to live in. It's an old city, and it certainly has a very unique culture. It takes some time to get around and find the hundreds of hidden treasures and hole-in-the-wall places, but it's definitely worth wandering around the city (preferably with a local). My suggestion, on the safety side, is to stick with the main roads unless you know exactly where you're going, and don't walk around the French Quarter after 2am alone! (Similarly, with respect to the French Quarter, my suggestion would be not to go north of North Rampart Street unless you know where you're going.) Having a car in the city is nice, though parking can be a hassle at times Downtown (mostly because people in New Orleans often don't know how to make the best use of the available space). Audubon Park just across from the Tulane Uptown campus is really pretty, and the Lakefront (which tourists never make it to) is really nice too, particularly if you drive up Wisner alongside City Park (where there's a nice sculpture garden) to get there. If you get a chance, check out the following places to eat: Lebanon's Café for Middle-eastern on Carrollton and Jeannette (cheap, Uptown), Dante's Kitchen on River Road (Uptown), the ever-popular Camellia Grille at the River Bend (Uptown), and if you like Dim Sum and have a car, go to Royal China at the East End of Veterans Blvd in Metairie (the suburb to the west of New Orleans, and maybe a 15 minute drive from downtown or 20 from uptown). There's also a nice jazz club east of the French Quarter called Snug Harbor that has a lot of good regular gigs like Astral Project and various members of the Marsalis family.
Enough from me :-)

seethrew 01-10-2005, 10:37 AM Hey folks - I just got accepted today! I'm not 100% sure if I'll be going yet, but I'm psyched to have the option. I had so much fun in LA. Love that zydeco.

Thanks! :o I had an interview mid-December and got my acceptance today, dated last week. They offered me a scholarship, so I'm surprised and totally stoked. What a cool place to go to school! Liked how everyone was so friendly and fun. Love the artsy-ness of NOLA. :)

There is another med school right down from where Tulane med will be you know!! :D
You guys will be very close to LSU Med so why don't you come over and have lunch with us LSU med students sometime. Congrats to all of you who have been accepted to Tulane.
pbehzad 01-10-2005, 08:43 PM Congrats to everyone on Tulane, especially seethrew. Thats awesome that Tulane is offering you scholarship. I, however, did not hear as favorable news today from Tulane :( . I was put in the "acceptable range" pool and was wondering if anyone (mainly the current Tulane students) knew if there is still a good chance that someone in the acceptable range will get accepted. Does Tulane accept a good deal of students who are in the aceptable range? I loved tulane, so im a little disappointed about not getting the thick envelope.
Thanks.

Who signed the scholarship letter? Was it Pisano, Kahn, or Beckman?
Davina3000 01-13-2005, 09:28 AM Someone I work with recommended the Lakeview area as a good place to live. Do any students live there? I get the impression that it is a more residential/suburban area (the woman who told me about it is older with a family, plus from what I'm seeing on the internet). Just wondering if the commute would be terrible from there, or if some people manage it. Any impressions of what it would be like to live there?
bbawco1 01-13-2005, 02:33 PM Sure, some people live there and there can be a significant commune (my guess would be maybe 20 min depending on which side of Lakeview). This is not quite as bad as if living in Metarie or Kenner where the commute can be as much as 45 min. or I heard of someone driving an hour regularly due to traffic. Lakeveiw is DEFINITELY much more suburban and residential which can be all the good reason to live there. Hope this helps...
akpete 01-14-2005, 12:11 PM I just found out today that I got an interview at Tulane for March 17. I'm excited even though it's really late in the season. The ironic part is that you guys will all be down there looking for housing for the upcoming school year, and I'll be just interviewing!! :D

Yay! Congrats on the interview akpete! March may be late in the season, but Tulane ends up taking a bunch of people out of the waitlist pool eventually, so regardless, you have a great shot. Enjoy your visit to New Orleans and good luck! :luck:
Benign_foodtube 01-14-2005, 12:31 PM Yeah, good luck my dude! Haha! It's just what you were lookin for, huh? Make full use of your interview man, and tell them how much you're into the school and city, which it sounds like you are! :luck: :luck:
aegis 01-16-2005, 12:21 PM Hey include me on the list for class of 2009!!! I’m glad you guys are talking about housing, for the last few weeks I have been trying to search rent.com and places like that without much luck. I did find one place that looked pretty sweet called Julia St. apartments, although it looks a little pricy too. I was trying to find something fairly close to the school because when I interviewed a lot of students said they rode their bikes to school, which I thought would be a cool idea. I imagine it is fairly safe to ride your bike around the city?? Does anyone have any thoughts on that? Has any one found any one bedroom places that are decently priced, meaning under $800/month. I am also planning on heading down there the second week of march for spring break to check out some places, if anyone else is gonna be down there and wants to hang out let me know.
kcernak 01-16-2005, 01:15 PM I'm an undergrad at Tulane now, and I'm living uptown. If you have a car and are looking for off-campus housing, I live in a pretty awesome complex. Apartments are:
$650 a month + utilities (for a one bedroom: includes bedroom, full bath, loaded kitchen+living room)
$900 a month + utilities (for a two bedroom: two bedrooms, two bath, loaded kitchen + living room + washer + dryer)
$1100 a month + utilities (for a larger two bedroom).
The complex is on S. Carrollton Ave, a pretty major street that runs into St. Charles. There is a street car stop right outside my door, and I am right around a lot of restaurants and stores and coffee houses. You can always take the street car or a bus downtown towards the medical school, but its a pretty decent ride, so i wouldn't really recommend it.
Oh, and parking is either $60 a month in a lot, or $5 per half a year for a residential permit as a student, which is clearly the better deal. There is a little-driven-on side street that is pretty awesome for parking.
Anyway, if anyone is coming down here to check out the town or wants to talk to my land lord, send me a PM and i'll send you his number. Usually at peak move-in times there is a waiting list (that is, beginning of may with the end of the school year or the end of august with the beginning) but if you set something up now, you'll probably get a place.
My landlord also has a few other properties in even better spots (closer to downtown and on st. charles) but for a lot more money ($900 for a single, 1500 + for a double).
Also, safety is definitely something to be aware of in New orleans, but i'm on a major street, and I've never heard of any problems around me. The apartments are also gated.
I have some pictures, too, so PM me if you'd like to see 'em.
How long does a post-interview response typically take?
dopaminophile 01-16-2005, 01:39 PM Ditto on the response q! Also, did anybody come up with a firsthand indication that the class is full or is there reason to think straight accepts are out there still?
akpete 01-16-2005, 02:01 PM I sure hope they save some acceptances for me in March!!

Apparently some people have been getting waitlisted since october. check it out http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=2192607#post2192607
dopaminophile 01-16-2005, 02:33 PM I'm sure they've been giving out waitlists since oct, the question is if they are only giving out waitlists now because they've met their quota of accepts. There are rumors to that effect on this thread, but they don't seem to be substantiated. I'll see on thurs and report back next weekend!

Davina3000 01-16-2005, 08:45 PM How long does a post-interview response typically take?
My acceptance arrived about 4 weeks after my interview and that was the longest I have heard of (straight acceptance, not a wait list acceptance). Average is probably 2 weeks.
I have no idea if the class is "full" but even if it technically is, you could still get a straight acceptance as I'm sure people will be withdrawing from their seats as it gets closer to May. They don't have to fill a newly empty seat with someone on the waitlist, they could give it to a new interviewee, so I'm sure you guys all have a great shot. Good luck! :luck:
aegis 01-19-2005, 08:34 PM I dont know if this seems dumb and too obvious, but can you call the school and ask them if they are full?

Let me know what they say!
coincidental 01-19-2005, 08:43 PM I dont know if this seems dumb and too obvious, but can you call the school and ask them if they are full?
I have no idea...but they just accepted me on the 12th (got the letter on the 18th...). I was amazed at the turn around...I interviewed there January 7th. But, if they're still accepting people, the class probably isn't full, right?
2tall 01-19-2005, 08:49 PM Good Point. Of course they've probably given out more acceptances than seats in the class...they send out 400 acceptances for around 150 seats.
I wonder if that's 400 by March 15th or by the first day of orientation.
Either way...I'll be waiting.

stinkycheese 01-24-2005, 04:06 PM Apple offers discounts for all students, but Tulane may have contracts with PC makers as well. Call them and ask! Hey Indo my brotha,
It sounds like yer into Tulane quite a bit. More than any other school, Tulane is receptive to unique students, students of different backgrounds, students enthusiastic about Tulane, and students who have much to offer the student body culturally or whom look forward to the student body's unique outlook and diversity. So, what I'm sayin here, man, is DON'T PULL YER PUNCHES> Get in there like swimwear, be enthusiatic as you can be, tell them how you feel about the school and the city. I'm sure yer gunna get in off the waitlist man! Don't try to hide who you are, be yerself unashamed and unabashed, and you will find a receptive ear and heart.
Kick some @ss brotha!

FYI, I just received the Financial Aid package in the mail yesterday (1/24). It includes a hard copy FAFSA and lots of information to go over. A little overwhelming, but certainly glad to start working on it...
stinkycheese 01-25-2005, 12:57 PM Got mine today too! :D
aegis 01-25-2005, 09:40 PM I checked out that dell link on the tulane website, it really is a pretty nice deal. I think its like a 12% discount. The only way I can figure to get to it is go to the the normal tulane.edu site and search for dell. They give you a member code that you can use. It seems like anyone that can get to the site would be able to use the discount. So it begs the question whats to stop anyone from using it. Or stop us from using another universitys discount. I'm gonna search some other med school sites just for kicks.
stinkycheese 01-26-2005, 04:32 AM I would imagine that tulane gets a list of people who purchase using the discount, and then checks it against their student list. Surprising that the access code is so... accessible! I can't wait to get a new laptop for school. I'm going to hold out as long as possible so that I can figure out what I really want.
FYI, my sister who is currently on residency interviews met a Tulane student on the interview trail. The Tulane person was really enthusiastic and friendly when my sister told him that I was going there. Just one more affirmation that this is a cool school :)

yea, after i ordered my computer, i thought it was interesting how easily accesible the code is also. Since i've ordered it I haven't had any other contact with dell or the computer dept here trying to confirm if i'm a student.
eckertle 01-28-2005, 09:46 PM Congrats, everyone! I didn't realize there was a Tulane acceptance thread! :-) I'm deciding between LSU N.O. and Tulane (because of the price difference). Is anyone else having this problem with their state school? Tulane is pricey, but I loved going to a private school for undergrad. Is Tulane worth the cost?
I'm originally from New Orleans (just left for undergrad and grad school), so please let me know if you have any questions about moving here. It's actually a safe city if you know where you're going. I've never even known anyone who has been robbed, mugged, etc.
During my interview, the tour guide and student interviewer both lived at Deming. Is it nice?
freaker 01-28-2005, 09:58 PM During my interview, the tour guide and student interviewer both lived at Deming. Is it nice?
I would live elsewhwere. Deming was very...sterile. It's convenient, sure. But in a city full of character like New Orelans, why go sterile when it is so expensive?
Talking with the students, it seemed most people lived uptown. There was one very popular complex with the med students, but I can't place the name.

hey, i'm going to my lsu-no intvw monday. I wanted to stay in NO for school so i cancelled any other interviews. The money is a pretty big diff but I really like Tulane and i think i would enjoy myself and succeed at the same time. I had the comfort of my mom tellin me that i can go wherever i want, and just see where i would like to go the most.

I'm at Tulane as an undergrad, and July will be brutal, but once October hits and it is still beautiful out you'll be happy :) It is beautiful here right now!!
vikaskoth 01-29-2005, 04:32 PM the heat in july and summertime blows, but there are plenty of times during the year where the weather is very nice, This day after christmas it was in the 60's and 70's, it really only gets cold 30-40 for one or two weeks max, and then the occasional cold front will bring a few days of cold weather. The spring and fall are generally pretty nice around here. Although in Louisiana the weather is never predictable.
MechE 01-29-2005, 06:53 PM Is Tulane worth the cost?
Tuition and fees at Tulane are about $30,000/year. Room and board will cost around $10,000 - $15,000/year. It's going to cost some major money to go to school there for four years! How is everyone planning to pay for it? Does Tulane give out a lot of scholarships and grants, or does everyone take out loans?

Everyone keeps talking about how expensive Tulane is. Sure 30k a year is a lot of $$, but I went on three other interviews and every school was in the same price range, and two of them were in state! So what is considered a fair price? It just seems like the majority of med schools will put you 200k in debt no matter how you play your cards.. Unless you sell your soul to the Air Force like I did.

The thing is, Tulane is a great deal more expensive if you consider the other medical schools in Louisiana. Tulane's tuition and fee cost approaches $39,000 a year (http://www.finaidhsc.tulane.edu/som_faq_cost.htm). That's about three times as much as LSU Shreveport and LSU New Orleans, which both cost around $13,000 a year in tuition/fees alone (http://www.medschool.lsuhsc.edu/admissions/aid.asp ; http://www.admissions.lsuhsc.edu/for_accepted_students.html).
As a person who was born and raised in New Orleans, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Tulane. Certainly, one can argue that Tulane is well worth the cost of attendance. I'm sure that Tulane hands out plenty of scholarships and financial aid opportunities. And of course, one could always get a scholarship though HPSP or another program. But it's also clear that Tulane packs a significant financial wallop compared to the LSUs.

That's true for any private v. public school, though, so its not unique to Tulane. People always say how expensive Tulane is, but its not more expensive than most other private schools, which I think is our point.
Tufts is more expensive than tulane plus Boston's cost of living is higher, from what I've read.
shirleses 01-30-2005, 09:16 PM So I'll be the dork-ass who starts this thread.
I can't wait to hear from some of my future classmates!
i'll be there! i think -- deciding between tulane (which i loved  ) and ridiculously cheap state school (even though a little too close for comfort to parents, i.e. 6 miles) is becoming a very stressful decision...but we're cheering for tulane!
all the students i talked on my interview day told me to live off campus..but my big issue with that is driving around new orleans. the no-left-handed turn thing is really going to cramp my style..
but anyways. cross fingers that my parents will come to their senses and send me far far away! :D

The point of the question was: How is everyone going to pay for Tulane? If I go there next fall I think it would have to be all loans. Unless they give me a scholarship...
akpete 01-31-2005, 09:17 AM Hi everyone! So I've gotta book my hotel for my Tulane interview in March (3/17). Also, what touristy stuff should we do while we're there? What's a "can't be in town and miss this"? Oh, and what's the weather like in NO in March? Thanks for all your help in advance!! :D

I stayed at the Holiday Inn that's on the list Tulane gives you (330 Loyola I think). It's between Tulane and the French Quarter and walking distance to both. With Tulane's discount you can stay there for $99/night as I recall. It's pretty nice with a good view if you stay on one of the upper floors.

I stayed at a place that was right next to the school, I mean it took me a total of maybe two minutes to walk there. I think it was called the park plaza or something like that, formally the radisson. It was pretty cheap if you use the Tulane discount I think it was about $85 a night. It's on that sheet of hotels that they send you. I liked it because I could wake up a little later and just walk over there with no worries about traffic... But Good luck, oh and let me give you one good tip. Before you break off from all the other applicants for your interviews Dr. Kahn comes into the conference room and has a little Q&A session with everyone (hes the dean). Read through the handbook that is online and write down some questions so you sound prepared, otherwise there tends to be an awkward silence. It was my luck that I was asking a bunch of questions and my first interview just happened to be with him, so its like we had already been talking.

there have been previous posts in this thread stating that Tulane's class is full right now and that they are interviewing for the waitlist, the people that posted this have said they've heard this info from adcom members. If you're going to be in New Orleans anyway, you may as well call and see if you can move up your interview, they very well may have a cancellation. Can't hurt as long as you are polite about it and don't mind hearing "No" if they are booked.
There has been much talk about the class being full, etc, etc. I just want to stress that Tulane's waitlist seems to typically have a lot of movement and the movement does not only occur after May 15th (although obviously that is when a lot of it happens). Once you are placed in the "acceptable pool" they will consider moving you out of it whenever there is a spot open. It is completely possible to get an acceptance from them within a "normal" time frame, even if technically their class is "currently full"...don't be discouraged, just do your best at the interview and let them know how you feel about Tulane. One student I talked to at Tulane was placed on the waitlist after her interview in March and was accepted a week later.
Good Luck! :luck:
And I'm SO jealous that you're moving to Jackson Hole! Wish there was a med school there ;)

Naw, not so much, brotha. I stayed in the French Quarter at this lil joint called the Provencal Hotel, but it was kinda expensive, and I had to cab-it to Tulane the morning of my interview. Sorry, blood, wish I had more for you. Just pick somewhere close where you can get some good sleep. Oh-- and don't need to be so conservative for this interview-- I wore my most colorful silliets tie, and got complements on it from each of my interviewers- it had all these different animals on it, playing musical instruments. You can have more fun at this interview than at others, so be yerself and know that that is absolutely good enough.
Cheers! And good luck man!! :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

Totally true, and I wish I had known this before my interview so that I would have brought comfortable shoes to walk around in instead of heels. One of the girls pulled out her pink slipper-like moccasins around lunchtime! Everyone there is super cool :) Have fun.
akpete 02-02-2005, 12:14 PM Thanks guys!! As for attire, I have a brown suit, so I've already been a little different from anyone else (paired with a bright pink striped shirt). Hmmm...maybe this will be the interview I whip out my pink heels instead of my boring brown shoes.
As a side note, it kinda stinks that I got my invite in mid-Jan, for an interview 3/17, while people getting invites in the last couple days are being scheduled for 3/10ish. Bunch of people must be cancelling?? Oh well, I can't really move it up anyway - I'm in Cancun 3/6 - 3/13, and too hard to schedule with work earlier than that.
Thanks for the well wishes everyone.

eckertle 02-03-2005, 08:56 PM My tuition outline arrived last week. Although Tulane amounts to approx. $54,000 (that's the average loan given) per year, it's not more expensive than other private schools. Basic tuition is $37,000. Damn those books, lab fees, and living expenses! Let's hope that we all get amazing scholarships!
:-)
I just wish that Tulane was the price of a state school.

clinick 02-07-2005, 10:06 PM Hey Guys - I haven't posted in a while b/c I was seriously thinking about going to UAB, but I decided to attend Tulane Med next year (and am really excited about it!). I'm looking for a roommate, and I definitly want to live in The Saulet. Seth Cohen, a current T2, took me to it during my interview, and it was amazing (pool, fitness facilities, fully furnished apartments, etc.). It is very reasonably priced (but coming from a Boston burb, almost anything seems reasonably priced). I hear the apartments are not exactly easy to get, so that's why I'm looking into it now. If anyone is interested, instant message me (Camaryllis) or message me through SDN, and we can talk about how compatable we might be. You can also look at the apartments they have at the Saulet online (I just googled it).
And yeaaah, that financial aid package - VERY intimidating. I took out loans for undergrad... I guess I'm just takin' out more!

Who knew there were places in the world where you could live in a concierge-d highrise one-bedroom plus study for less than $1000? Who knew there were places in the world where you could live in a concierge-d highrise one-bedroom plus study for less than $1000? DREAM COME TRUE!!! :) If I were going to school up here, I'd be paying $1000 for a tiny studio in a crappy neighborhood anyway, so this just feels so great to be able to pay the same amount of money for such a great apartment.
I’m from Oklahoma where the cost of living is dirt cheap. My 2-bedroom, 1 ½ bath, 1200 sq.ft. townhouse in a pretty nice neighborhood is only $500 a month. So for me and my roommate it’s only $250 a month plus electricity and cable modem . Not too shabby.
akpete 02-12-2005, 10:13 PM I live in Southern MN right now, and our 4-bedroom apartment directly across the street from campus is only $995 a month. So basically, no matter where I go to med school, it's gonna seem super expensive. Although, next year, the apartment I've heard is going for $1200...that's a big jump.
stillpremed 02-13-2005, 07:18 AM Hi,
I was REALLY interested in Tulane med. I was wondering how much movement there is on the waitlist in year's past? Do a lot of students elect for the cheaper instate schools by the May 15th deadline?
Thanks!
stinkycheese 02-13-2005, 08:40 AM There is supposedly quite a bit of waitlist movement, but the best way to find out would be to search for waitlist threads from the last few years and see. Good luck.
Benign_foodtube 02-15-2005, 02:01 PM Hey, are any of you crazy cats out there who are accepted to Tulane looking at the Financial Aid addendum that they sent out and realizing that you don't know yer @ss from a hole in the ground? I have my FAFSA off and sent, got my SAR, and made appropriate changes to it, finished my taxes and sent them off, and I'm lighting a fire under my folks to get their info all set so that I can report it.
Now I look at the addendum, and I'm like "I don't know what the hell I'm doing, and I don't know who is a good private lender for me should I need one..." :scared:
Anyone else have this problem? Anyone out there know what they're doing with this stuff? If so, would you be willing to have a yahoo IM or other type of IM pow-wow to help us sucker-chumps out? I wanna get the addendum done and sent off so I can start the next steps. Plus, I wanna get in there like swimwear if there are any scholarships available. Holla if ya hear me!!

Hey check out Nellie Mae, i am a MSPH student at Tulane and on the 2009 waitlist. i have my private grad loan with them, they are great- no B.S. charges, and its really easy to apply for the loan. I should mention that private loans are entirely credit based.

MabdulD 02-23-2005, 09:57 PM Howdy. Do any of you fine folks have any information on Tulane's merit scholarships? I saw in another thread that they had started to give them out. Anyone know about how many of these suckers they give out? Or whether there are any left to give?
I ask because I really liked Tulane, but its starting to look a little costly.

I'm going down there with the intention of locking down a place for July, I won't be moving down there till july 1st. I plan on just hanging out for a week and checking out a bunch of places. I'm not too worried about it, besides it will be a good spring break to be in New Orleans. There are some leads on gambitweekly.com that I'm gonna follow. I also found some interesting places through rent.com and sites like that. I'll make sure to report my findings. I don't think any of us have much of an idea what were doing. Thats the fun in it.

I know if your applying for the MD/Mph program they give out a merit scholarship of 10K, the entire program costs 18K for four years. This is only if you get your application in by april I think. I'm not sure if there are merit scholarships for the MD program straight up?

vikaskoth 03-01-2005, 10:54 AM i posted this earlier in this thread, but if you are looking for places they have prudential realtors and later & blum realtors that could help you as well. One of the papers or booklets with the financial aid stuff says to submit the FAFSA by March 15. I haven't started it, but will probably do it this week. Does anyone know if you need to submit your $500 deposit or FAFSA in order to be considered for merit scholarships?

I read somewhere in that book they sent us that the deadline for our financial aid info was based on our program, which set the deadline to april 15th. I'm assuming that includes the FASFA, but you are supposed to get your FASFA in a month ahead of time anyway, so maybe it fits.

i'm right with you in the 500 range my friend. i couldn't possibly justify spending 7-800 dollars a month on an apartment i'll only be sleeping and stressing in. plus i need the extra money to support my heroin addiction.

I was too lazy to double-check the financial aid info before my last post. Tulane recommends submitting your info by March 31. That seems weird because most people will not be finished with their taxes two weeks before the due date.
Does anyone have info on Deming? I'm thinking that living on campus will be the only way to get myself to class (considering traffic between uptown and downtown can be a nightmare), but I don't want to live in a dump. How are the apartments and exercise room?

Just an FYI -- Deming kind of sucks, but it's good for the first semester if you want to get to know people and have all-hours access to the cadavers. Otherwise, uptown is not a bad place and traffic really isn't that bad. Claiborne is usually pretty quick, even at the worst point of rush hour. I lived uptown for a couple of years and found it to be a nice break from the med school. There is a grass and trees uptown, something you won't see downtown. And, you'll realize pretty quickly that you don't have to go to class and there goes your main benefit of being down there.
Good luck

Any recommendations on where to live uptown? Is it mostly houses for rent or apartment buildings? I know this sounds dumb, but what is considered uptown? Is it west of the free way by the universities north of the garden district? What is considered downtown then? I should probably learn these things considering I'm going to be there in a few days.

aegis 03-07-2005, 03:55 PM Hey everyone, I’m actually in New Orleans right now. I just drove down from Michigan yesterday to start looking around for places. I quickly learned a few lessons about renting down here. I come from a small college that doesn’t ever have enough housing, so I’m used to reserving a place in November for the following August. Not the case down here, if you pick up a paper or search for apartments everything is available right now! I talked to some people and they said that there is so much stuff available at any given time that you would pretty much be ok just driving down here not knowing where to stay, and find a place within a matter of a day or two. So now we are just driving around checking out what are some good areas to live so I will know for later. I checked out the Saulet today, and I think it’s a rip off for a one bedroom. The bottom of the pack one bedrooms they had were $860 and you had to rent a washer and dryer for an extra $50 a month. The grounds were awesome though, there were pools and hot tubs, with a nice gym. But still over $900/month is crazy if you ask me, plus its in kind of a crap area. I also went back to the med school today and talked to a lady named Charlotte Steyar. She worked at the admissions office, but was also a realtor and gave me some good tips. She said some time in may or so Tulane is going to send us a password to a link on the SOM website that advertises housing, she said this is basically a classified ad for medical students. They review different places and I guess you can find roommates. She gave me a generic password if I wanted to check it out, which I will of course share. If you go to www.som.tulane.edu go to students- office of admissions- entering class of 2005 (she said it still says 2004) – housing and roommates . The user ID is Admissions, password is Tulane2004, all case sensitive. Most of the things on there now are only immediate availability, but keep an eye on it later. She also told me that if you go looking for places make sure you look at the street behind the apartment. New Orleans is very polarized. You might live on a great street, but the hood might be right behind you. Let me know if anyone wants me to check out anything while I’m here.
Triggity02 03-07-2005, 07:11 PM do any of ya'll know about waitlist activity at Tulane? is there a large portion of the class that gets in off waitlists? i got my waitlist letter and it said that peak activity is in May but i could be accepted at any time. this waiting could lead me right to Betty Ford....thanks.
stinkycheese 03-08-2005, 07:11 AM hey guys, I just got back from New Orleans too. I liked the Garden District a lot. I will probably live in one of the smaller apartment communities there. I ended up going around with a realtor so I didn't see a lot of the bigger complexes like the Saulet, but I did see the Georgian apartments and some of the other complexes in the garden district and they were all very nice! I think you can't go wrong with the Garden District, feels like a nice safe residential area. Well, safe for NO :P
BabyDoctor 03-09-2005, 07:08 AM Everyone keeps talking about how expensive Tulane is.
So are you in the June class? I have a MEPS inspect in the morning and an interview left... we're cutting it close to the wire since the deadline is March 15!
Any other HPSP '09ers out there?
BabyDoctor 03-09-2005, 07:12 AM I will be buying a home in NOLA, but I don't know how much advice I can really share since I am a complete novice to real estate. You can search the MLS to see what houses are on the market. Latter-Blum has a good site, but most any realtor with a website gives you access to the MLS. The more desirable the neighborhood, the higher the prices will be. If you are willing to move a bit farther out, there are nice properties at very affordable prices. There are also many condos available at good prices. The NOLA market is a little tricky b/c a newly renovated very nice property may strike your eye as being listed at a very reasonable price...until you realize that the area is NOT good at all and it is not worth the lower price to live there. But there is some good stuff out there!
I'd be happy to share notes with you, Babydoctor and anyone else who is looking to buy. Feel free to PM me, I've forsaken my SDN obsession for real estate site obsession, but I'll check my PMs on occasion ;)
I've found pretty much all of this to be true. Personally, I like the idea of rehabbing to some extent -- I'm looking in transitional areas for properties which are structurally sound but the cosmetics are less important. Painting is stress relief to me, as are things like moldings, fixtures, tile, gardening... I'm looking forward to this, can you tell? ;) I've moved 16 times in the last 10 years and am sick of renting and just inhabiting a house/apartment/room instead of living there. We'll see how this works out in practice, but I'm excited. :)
Doxie 03-09-2005, 09:33 PM I am interviewing at Tulane next week and I was wondering about what time to expect to be finished with the interview and if anyone thinks it is possible to leave before noon (would work out much better with flights) i.e. would I only miss like a tour or nonmandatory presentations or do they interview into the afternoon (I wasn't given an actual time, just to be there at 8:15).
Also, does anyone know much about or has interviewed for the TRUmed program..is it difficult to get accepted to and how much $ do they typically offer?

You definitely can't leave before noon... then you'd only be there for about three hours which isn't really appropriate  The first half hour is introductions and a talk by Dr. Kahn; then you are taken off for faculty interviews throughout the morning. You have a (mandatory) student interview over lunch, then a tour, then you're free to go around 2:30/3:00. I think it would be application suicide to leave early, but that's just my opinion.
Also, does anyone know much about or has interviewed for the TRUmed program..is it difficult to get accepted to and how much $ do they typically offer?

marina 03-21-2005, 08:44 AM Babydoctor,
You said you got accepted a few months after you interviewed. I'm on the acceptable list. Did you send Tulane any letters or call or anything? I was thinking it would be hard to get off of the acceptable list because they probably have about 700 people on it. I sent an LOI. I was wondering if there was anything else I should do.
They can't look at all those charts again, so I thought a letter might get them to think about me again.
Thanks!
Marina
exgatr 03-23-2005, 09:30 PM You're right about the party thing. We all know how to kick back and not take ourselves too seriously. There are a few people here who are competitive, but not in a bad way. They're just shooting for the more difficult specialties so they have to work harder.
My advice is DON'T GO TO CLASS!! (except maybe the first semester). We have a good note service and good note packets from the profs. Without class, you have much more time to do the things you enjoy. In my case, I golf at least once a week, fish from time to time, and during the season, I enjoy a very politically incorrect sport (which Louisiana is known for).
Get yourself a good group of friends and med school won't be hard on you at all.
Hey Guys - c/o 2009 here.
I think that Tulane is about as fun as medical school gets.

exgatr 03-23-2005, 09:34 PM Whatever you do, don't get a nice car. The roads in New Orleans are terrible and it'll get trashed. If I were you I'd get a pickup truck--they're about the only things that can take the beating of driving around here.
Q: I was a little concerned after reading a past post on this thread. I'm getting a new car for graduation -- how concerned should I be about theft? Do I need LoJack or a club for New Orleans?
What day of the week does the adcom meet?
I want to know because I'm going to either a) send 'em a butt load of donuts or b) kick in the door, jump on the table, and strip. My student interviewer told me she tried B and it really worked for her. I've got my fingers crossed.
Well Tulane is officially full. I just interviewed on Thursday and this comes from multiple adcom members mouths. So, all interviews at Tulane from this point on are for waitlist spots.
damn.

Funny story: I interviewed at tulane a little while ago and the dean referred to this post and said it was untrue. haha.

CoffeeCat 03-25-2005, 02:07 PM Hi -
Can anyone reliably confirm that class of 2009 is full??

I think that we can confirm by the posts above, with people getting their acceptance a week or two after interviewing, that they are still accepting people directly after interviewing. I'm sure the class is full or close to it, but people drop acceptances all of the time and it seems like there's some space left.

The negative interview feedback for tulane all reports being interviewed by the same person. Have any of you had this person?

i think it's an older guy. i remember at my interview, everyone came out seeming pretty comfortable and confident...but the one guy that came out of his office looked awful. i can't remember his name for the life of me though... great lot of help i am :)
aegis 03-27-2005, 10:04 PM For those of you who don't live in New Orleans, when are you planning on moving down? I wanna get there early, like at least three weeks before classes start just to explore the city some more.

I had him. I can't remember his name either. Harmless. Nice guy. He just monopolizes the conversation. It was first interview (second of the day). Definitely a learning experience.
eckertle 03-29-2005, 01:58 PM Is anyone taking classes at Tulane this summer? A friend recommended that I take Histology.

rme04 03-29-2005, 02:47 PM Hi -
Can anyone reliably confirm that class of 2009 is full??
Thanks
My interview group was told that the class was already full. That was on January 14th.
There is significant waitlist movement at Tulane once spots open at top 50 schools and some people say goodbye to beautiful new orleans. suckers.
Son of a Sailor 03-29-2005, 04:25 PM Granted, its an admirable feat to receive and interview at Tulane, but does everyone who doesn't get an acceptance get waitlisted?
Also, how does the waitlist work. First come first serve? Randomly?
So many questions.
vikaskoth 03-29-2005, 04:56 PM people get rejected, i've seen people on these forums say they were rejected. It would silly to have a waitlist of 800+ people anyways. Since the school is rolling, i would think those waitlisted earlier (oct-dec) would have a better shot than late ones (mar-apr). Maybe a current tulane student will reply
MechE 03-29-2005, 05:10 PM Since the school is rolling, i would think those waitlisted earlier (oct-dec) would have a better shot than late ones (mar-apr). Maybe a current tulane student will reply
Although that’s not to say those who interview in the last few weeks don’t get accepted. The student host I stayed with interviewed on the last day of interviews last year. He was waitlisted and got an acceptance phone call on May 15th. There's still hope for us late interviewers.
vikaskoth 03-29-2005, 05:29 PM my reply was pure speculation concerning the waitlist. maybe its a ranked one, thats constantly updated. either way, good luck to anyone waiting it out.
BabyDoctor 03-30-2005, 02:28 PM Babydoctor,
You said you got accepted a few months after you interviewed.
Thanks!
Marina
I was accepted about a month after I interviewed, but that's mostly because I interviewed just before Christmas, and the adcom didn't meet again until January. I sent the usual thank you notes and all, but nothing beyond that. Wish I could help more! :/
Meg603 03-30-2005, 03:48 PM I interviewed on 3-11-05 and still haven't heard anything (they said we would hear within 2 weeks and someone else who interviewed on this date posted that they got their acceptance on last week). Is it a definite bad sign that I haven't heard yet? I'm soooooo anxious, I'm waiting to hear about 3 schools and tulane is my top choice. Do you think it is too early to call?

I interviewed 3/8/05 and heard that I was waitlisted last week (got the letter 3/28) so hopefully you two will have decisions soon.
call the office. But, make sure you do so when there won't be 12 interviewees sitting in silence listening to the lady inform you of your fate over the phone.
By the way, when you call in and she punches you up on the computer a giant picture of you appears on the center of the computer screen that faces toward the hallway that leads back to the conference room.
clinick 04-04-2005, 11:54 PM See, to me, coming from Boston, these rents seem like a dream come true.
I haven't been on SDN for a while so I was going through the Tulane thread.. I am soo with you on this one. My place is 500 a month for a cardboard box in Waltham! I'm really looking forward to living in a nice place for a reasonable amount of money next year...
Amida 04-05-2005, 07:24 AM What are the financial aid packages like at Tulane? Are there any scholarships and grants or do you have to get by on only loans? $39,000 + living in loans sounds like a lot to me.
Meg603 04-05-2005, 10:46 AM I ended up calling and was told that I'm in the acceptable range. From what I got out of the letter and the secretary, it is not ranked so it shouldn't matter when you interviewed. Basically, its not exactly a "waitlist" it's a pool of candidates that they can look at when they have more available spots open up.
MechE 04-05-2005, 02:47 PM I decided to follow Meg’s cue and call the admissions office. The secretary told me that one of my interviewers had not yet turned in his evaluation. So this means the committee has not reviewed my file yet. She said they’re expecting the evaluation sometime this week and I should know by next Wednesday. More waiting.

So you'll have $200,000 in debt...After you finish your residency/fellowships...you'll make at least $100,000 (depending on specialty). So you could live on $50,000...and pay your debt off in 4 years.

Don't forget taxes and malpractice insurance.
vikaskoth 04-19-2005, 04:08 PM you actually would be potentially losing money by trying to pay of your loans that quickly, I think loan payments are on a 20 or 30 yr plan and you could invest the left over money you have in something with a higher return than your loan interest rate. Thats the answer that has been given by many all over this site.

So in effect you're borrowing money to invest. Makes sense to me (sarcasm).

captbadass 04-19-2005, 04:41 PM So in effect you're borrowing money to invest. Makes sense to me (sarcasm).
he's referring to the excess income you have after making the minimum loan payment. for example, say hypothetically your payment plan on the loan requires you to pay 1000/month, but you can afford to pay 2000. rather than pay 2000, invest the extra 1000 in something that earns more interest than your loan costs.
2tall 04-19-2005, 04:41 PM Don't forget taxes and malpractice insurance.

I understood what he was saying...but...if one chooses to invest money that one could use to pay off their debt...they are (in effect) borrowing money to invest. That makes no mathematical or financial sense.
vikaskoth 04-19-2005, 04:52 PM no, the borrowed money has already been used to pay for med school
so its just that your not paying back your debt as quickly as possible.
i'm not saying you should take out student loans and then take that money and put it in some investment with a high return

yes. mine prolly was done fast since all they had to do was plug the debt into loans. they used nice round numbers. too many 0's if ya ask me. maybe a longer wait is good luck. ;)
to all the other $$$ stuff... sheesh. my mind cannot compute. *owww* it hurts. *reeling* hard nuff to think about relocating, yet again. not to mention 30 yr plans fer debt.

exactly, what you are saying is clear. it seems common sense to me. paying a 3% loan off fast as possible is just plain dumb. this is not credt card debt with some exorbitant interest rate. this is why even people who can afford to pay tuition without loans still take them out when rates are this low.

there was a check box on the addendum that asked if you want to be considered for the low interest primary care loan, there was a yes, no, and not sure box, so maybe if you put not sure they offered it to you?
eckertle 04-21-2005, 03:44 PM I think that I put "not sure" and did NOT get offered the primary care loan. Maybe you accidentally marked "yes." If so, you can always decline the loan. As far as i know, it's not too late to apply for a private loan.

thanks again,

I'm an undergrad at Tulane now, and I'm living uptown.
