Hey guys, I did a search and could not find a PCOM Class of 2009 thread so I am officially starting one. I hope we can all get to know each other a little better before me make the big transition into med school. Can't wait to meet everyone...

Good idea starting this thread. Anyway, I have decided to attend PCOM as well. Similarly, I was accepted to both DMU & KCUMB but decided that PCOM is the best school for me.

Hopefully, we can get this thread going for us PCOM rookies and establish a small network (army) to facilitate our transition to medical school.

Congratulations to both of you.

I look forward to meeting you in OMM labs.

Dont be afraid to ask questions if you have them (prefer email).

I have heard that some med schools always have a set day for exams, such as once a month on mondays...does anyone know if PCOM has exams structured in such a fashion?

No. You will get a schedule for each repective course that details the lecture dates, topics, and exam dates. You could have several exams a month/week; OMM (written or practical), Cardio, Standardized Patient. You just have to wait until your schedule i ready.

Congrats and good luck. PCOM Rocks!

Are there plenty of areas for quiet studying at PCOM? During my interview, I noticed that the library seemed a bit crowded and most students studied in the lectures halls after class.

PCOM 2009

I usually can find a spot in the library to study whenever I want. Around exam times is gets kinda crowded but if you look hard enough you can usually find somewhere to study if not in the lib then in other classrooms. I used to study in the auditorium but it wasnt because there wasn't room elsewhere. I did it because I felt most comfortable being in there. I'm sure other kids do the same thing for the same reason.

been lazy about replying to this thread. I choose PCOM over CCOM and erie mainly because in my interview at PCOM the dean of admissions said: "You have an acceptance to CCOM, they are the school i feel is the most similiar to ours, that is going to be a tough choice for you".

Anyways, how long is winter break at PCOM?

Is it a bad sign that I am already asking for a break.

It's a good thing that you're bringing up the break idea. Try to start your break now and enjoy as much of it as possible until orientation! You won't see another real break until Thankgiving break, which was 5 days long. Winter break was 16 days long.

Do you think it is a better idea to live within walking distance of PCOM so it is close and you don't waste money on gas, or live 10-20 minutes away and maybe save money on rent?!?

HNS

As long as you are conftorable you are fine. Even if you are in walking distance the weather sometimes blows and you will want to drive. Sounds like you are faily close as is.

As Pitt Panther stated, no

3 Written Exams for SPOM (gross anatomy and Microanatomy)
3 Practicals for Gross
2 Practicals and 2 Quizzes (sp) for Histology
5 Exams for Cell and Tissue
OMM Exam every trimester
OMM Practicals 2X a trimester

Of course this is how it has gone for my class, yours will probably be different.

Yeah shan-bot, I haven't heard a thing yet, I sent them an email to confirm they had everything, which, they did. They also stated in the reply that financial aid, housing, and registrar should shortly be sending out information, but admissions didn't know exact dates. I guess we will just have to hang in, as hard as that may be with all the excitement :D

I'm so excited to be in PCOM's class of 2009! I found out I was accepted in early December! I am so happy to join this post. I was wondering if someone could tell me when freshman orientation is likely to be. I get married on July 23rd, and then I'll be on my honeymoon through the beginning of August. I just hope this doesn't conflict with orientation. Also, I'd like to know which areas around PCOM are safe to live. Where do all the PCOM students prefer to live? I've been looking for housing, and I am just not familiar with the surrounding neighborhoods. Any good information out there?

CONGRATS and WELCOME to the class of 2009. I don't know of any housing info, there is a link on the website that opens a pdf filing detailing apartments in the area, maybe that can help you. I was curious if we need a graphing calculator for any classes? I lost mine and don't want to buy a new one if I can get by with a regular scientific calculator, thanks guys.

I don't think most students live in Manayunk for the bar scene, they live there because you can get rent for around 400 bucks a month. Personally, I don't like the scene there either, which is why I live in the city (Northern Liberties) and will continue to live there if I end up going to PCOM. If anyone has any questions about Philly I've lived there my whole life... hope to see you guys next Fall!

SO excited for august so i can meet you all!! What great news! I fell in love with the atmosphere at PCOM during my interview, got my letter two weeks ago...speaking of the letter - when do they cash your deposit check? I had a nightmare last night that they didn't get my "yes, i'm coming" stuff and i've been unsettled all day. should i call the admissions office to confirm that they received everything, or just take a deep breath and not be mental?

p.s - anyone doing anything fun and exciting this summer now that they know they're "in"?? :luck:

Hello everyone! My name is Katie and I have also been accepted into PCOM Class of '09. I am so excited as PCOM was my top choice for medical school since the beginning of the application process. Otherwise, I am so excited to meet everyone!! :)

Does anyone have any idea when freshman orientation is?

Congrats to 2009 and Welcome to PCOM

There are plenty of things that you guys can do to prepare for August.

1. Apartment search
There are plenty of search sites for apt in the philly area. The complexes close to the school are pricey but they come with cool benes like utilities paid, w/d, security, fitness center, etc (Greenbriar, Iriquios, Beekman Place, Presidental, Lincoln Green, Duffield House, Fairmount Terrace). Roxborough and Manayunk are cool places to live, but when it snows - you may need x-ctry skis, snow shoes and a sled to get to school. East Falls is also cool there are some homes that are reasonable that you can rent with a roommate. And if you just prefer the suburban life there are always Bala Cynwyd, Wynnewood, Bryn Mawr, and Narbreth.

2. Rest, Rest, and More Rest!
Once your search for housing is done. Relax and enjoy your summer. For most of you this should be the most stress free summer of your life so enjoy. {NGANTT, you are the exception. I was married on June 19, 2004 and immediately after my wedding I left for a medical mission tour for 5 weeks. (I did not get to enjoy a real honeymoon :( ) But your wedding will be bliss, enjoy! I believe your orientation is 8/9 - 8/12. Just don't let the last minute stuff stress you out.} Travel, spend time with family, enjoy the sun, beach, and your friends. This is not to say that you will not to have fun during first year, but you will need the time to adjust to the schedule and the work load. This is the lesson of BALANCE. But you will achieve that zen mode and be able to resume some normalcy in your life.

3. Money, Money, Money!
After traveling the world this summer, remember to stash away some extra loot for the little things - equipment purchases, club dues, PCOM gear, books, etc. - that you will need to begin the school year off right. During orientation week all the clubs will be clamoring for your attention (for you are the new superstars of PCOM :D ). The average 4-yr membership is in the range of $40-$70/club. Textbooks are textbooks and we know that horror of purchasing expensive books from our undergrad experiences. Once you get the book list - price shop. There are plenty of sites out there that have books for cheap and some offer NEXT - DAY shipping @ NO CHARGE (B&N!!!!!). Finally, EQUIPMENT! You can't be a good doc without the necessary tools. Yes, you will get your complementary stethoscope and white coat, but the rest is on you to purchase. During orientation, you will receive an order form from Welch and Allyn for the purchase of your BP cuff, otoscope, and ophthalmoscope that will be due with the money by the following Monday when Anatomy begins. The average cost for this package is around $400-$600 depending on how high tech you are (there is this awesome spy gear type scope you can buy - but most likely if you are not a military scholarship person, you will be envying them).

So, I hope that this information was useful and not overwhelming. I just thought that it was my civic duty as a fellow PCOMer to help prepare you for the road ahead. You are now apart of a noble profession that is committed to life long learning and the pursuit of serving others. I look forward to meeting you soon.

If you need any info, feel free to email any time. malliem@msn.com

God Bless.

I just got the mailing about the $2,000.00. It is interesting that this was never mentioned before. The only thing I heard about before was the $250.00 which, honestly, did seem kinda low for a medical school deposit but I wasn't going to complain. They must know that we are paying for everything on loans, so how do they expect us to keep comming up with this money before we get our Staffords in? Are there any other suprise bills ahead?

Congrats Rbt!! I didn't know you lived in Philly now. I'm in Northern Liberties, the neighborhood north of Old City and it's almost as fun, but definitely much less expensive! Commuting from Center City to PCOM is very doable, you can take W. River Dr straight to City Ave instead of having to go 676 to 76 which is hit or miss sometimes with traffic.

I agree with Surrender. In fact, I was just about to post this same info but he beat me to it.
Just to add a little bit to this, there are two courses offered in the summer. In 2004, the SummerStart program was offered to select applicants who were out of school for a while and it was free. These people then got to take the 2-week summer biochem class for free too. I paid and took the biochem class just as a warm up and it was verrrry helpful because almost all of the info showed up again.

P.S. if you take the biochem class, be sure to make your metabolism charts. You will use them again :)

I actually choose the opposite (pcom over ccom). At the core the schools are exactly the same, reputation, people, location, etc. CCOM campus is nicer, but its colder. In the end, I decided there was no real advantage to moving out there.

MasterShakeDO

Hey rbt,
gotta preface this by saying i'm going to neither, i chose TUCOM cause I want to be in CA and my girlfriend goes there. That being said, I liked CCOM better because of the campus and their attractive clinical rotations at the best hospitals alongside all the other Chicago med students. Though the teaching hospitals may be good, they don't have the prestige of the likes of Cook County. Both schools have been established for over 100 years and both cities are DO friendly. But PA healthcare is in shambles and you also need to do that extra year to be accredited in PA, but not IL. I also thought i needed to leave philly because I get no studying done here b/c all my friends are here. I think you should at least go for the interview and see how you like it. Best of luck to ya, and if you want to talk about it over a few beers I'll be in town for a while.

group_theory
03-09-2005, 05:16 PM
you also need to do that extra year to be accredited in PA, but not IL.

Quick clarification

The AOA internship year requirement should not be a factor in where you go to school. If you go to TUCOM, PCOM, or CCOM and don't do the AOA internship (or get the AOA approval for ACGME internship), then you can't practice in the 5 states and also can't be board certified by an AOA board (board of osteopathic surgery, board of osteopathic pediatrics, etc)

You can graduate from PCOM and practice in IL, just as you can graduate from CCOM and practice in IL (all w/o doing an AOA internship)

Of course, if you want to do a residency in IL, then going to CCOM will be better. Of course, if you want to do a residency in PA/NJ/DE, then going to PCOM would be better.

Anywya, just a quick clarification. Have fun at Touro.

And good luck to the PCOM Class of 2009 - before you know it, your bedmate will soon be Netter and Grant :)

I just posted the same question in the cranial sticky, but i was afraid y'all might not see it. How is cranial taught at PCOM? How much time is spent on it? A semester? More? Is it part of the osteopathic principles class? What year do you start it? How "out there" is it at PCOM? I have heard of schools lighting incense and candles. Does PCOM do that? Tell me everything you know about it at PCOM! Thanks!

newyorkcougar, under your name it says "DMU 2009" - why would someone in DMU Class of 2009 want to know more about the cranial education at PCOM? Just curious

Cranial was taught during 2nd trimester of 2nd year. We spent 2 maybe 3 hours in lecture, and1.5 hr in lab. It wasn't tested on the practical.

For those interested in learning more about cranial, there was an extracurricular course offered in cranial.

Cranial consisted of background/history, theory behind cranial, relevant research on CRI, and biomechanics of SBS (i.e., torsion, lateral strain, compression, etc). There was no candles or incense.

I was wondering what the name of the apartments adjacent to PCOM are called and any info about them, rent, quality, etc... thanks guys. I would like to have an apartment within walking distance to the school, any recommendations?

Group Theory...thanks for the info...and the heads up on my out-of-date profile. I have decided to go to PCOM instead of DMU. So was cranial that entire term? I have heard that it is heavily tested on COMLEX...is that true?

LHUEMT911,

To NewYorkCougar,

Welcome to PCOM :). Since I haven't taken the COMLEX yet, I can't say with first hand experience whether the cranial education is enough. However, judging by the Savarese's "OMT Review 3rd ed" book and DiGiovanna's "Osteopathic Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment", the school seems to have covered all the major concepts of cranial.

Congratulations to everybody that made it into PCOM's Class of 2009. I look forward to meeting all of you shortly. Right now I'm more concerned with where I'm going to live next year than anything else. I'm thinking about going to Phili in a week or two so if anybody wants to recommend some "good" apartments to live in I would appreciate it alot

I agree. I have lived in Duffield House for almost 2 years now. However, all the apts surrender903 listed are within walking distance of the school. If you have a day, you can come to Philly and see them all in one day. I personally love Duffield House and will probably be staying here for the next 4 years. I would say the most positive thing is that the rent includes all your utilities. So I don't receive separate bills each month, I have unlimited utility use, and the rent is still so cheap. Most studios around PCOM are about $650+utilities (at least in the buildings listed above) or more. Duffield is $670 with all utilities included. Hope that helps a little. Also, I will be at the April 10th welcome brunch. So hopefully I will see many of you there!

Hey everyone,
I got admitted to the class of 2009 about a month or so ago. I have lived in philly for a whille (old city) and if anyone wants some help getting around or for some housing advice while you are apt shopping, you can always pm me.
To students already at pcom... I really want to stay in my apt. Do you think it is a major hastle living in the city and going getting to class? I have a car so i'm guessing no.

Do you think it is a major hastle living in the city and going getting to class? I have a car so i'm guessing no.
I live in Northern Liberties, and it took me less than 15 minutes to get to PCOM from where I live, and this was during the morning rush hour when we'd be driving there.

I also work out near PCOM, and I've found it's fastest to take the Vine St. Expressway to the Parkway Exit, then go around the Art Museum circle and take West River Drive straight to PCOM. It took me 13 minutes, but I drive fast.

I really prefer living in the city as opposed to out there near PCOM, and I advise anyone with a car to do the same. City Ave is OK. (It's nice to be across the street from Saks.) But I like it more in the city, and I'm sure it'll be nice to feel some distance from school.

I'm already looking forward to meeting everyone this August!

Hi everybody,

I just found out that I got accepted today, and I will be joining you all in August. It feels really great, and I no longer have to run home to check the mail everyday. I am a masters student here at PCOM and live really close by if anyone needs any info on the area. As far as grading goes, I believe it is A,B,C with +/-'s. At least thats how it is in my program. As for living in the city, it can be done, but it can also be a real pain if you need to go back and forth a couple times in a day. Anyways, I look forward to meeting everyone soon.

Grades are numerical, with 70 being passing

There are some pass/fail courses, but you won't encounter them until well into your first and second year.

Hello all. First let me congratulate you on getting into a great school. The reason I am writing is because I am trying to gain some insight into the schools I am very interested in. So I figured what better source than future students who already made the decision I soon will make. What drew you to PCOM? Were there any aspects of the school or curriculum that really were fascinating or cool? When do you start patient interaction? Where are the rotations? I figure with so many top hospitals in the Philly area you will have a great selection. And with the history of the school, there must be a lot of great connections. So any help you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance and congrats again.

Hey guys-
I got my letter last week and It is such a reflief to know I am going there in August!! I am getting married in may and I leave for my bachelor party in vegas on thursday! I can go have a great time and not even think about medical school until I get back. I was wondering if anyone knows a student that commutes to PCOM. I live in newark DE- about 50 min by car and less by train- I checked today and its 163$/month for a train pass. We are still undecided if I will live close to school or just commute. I do plan on attending the brunch on april 10, and look forward to meeting some of you.

Im looking into getting a studio at Greenbriar. One of my buddies just got a place there and its pretty nice with a decent patio area for barbeque. I think hes paying 695 with utilities included. Im looking into getting a place either there or Duffield. But I havnt looked at Duffield yet.

Can anyone post the details of the lunch on the 10th, I havnt recieved anything about it yet?

Some thoughts on PCOM housing:

After checking out many apartments this past weekend, talking to several current PCOM students and alumni, and checking various websites, ( ie www.apartmentratings.com ) I agree with the above listing of good/close apartments. I personally chose Beekman Place and would highly reccommend it. I felt it was imaculately maintained, had a great location and had every amenity/ utility that I would ever want 100% included. Greenbriar was a close second.

If anyone wants to go a little further from the school, as in 4-5 miles, Ridge Carlton, Woodmere and Henry on the Park were all great looking and highly reccommended places. Much more of a suburban/residential area then around the school.

From what I've heard/seen/read, places to stay away from are any of the Woodward Property Apartments ( Bala, Bryn Mawr Suites, Parkside Village and a few more). The only other place near the school that I have heard consistant negatives about is the Presidential City. I could be wrong, but I have yet to hear any postives that come close to outweighing the negatives about these places. All of them continually seem to have big problems with management and maintainence. They are very reasonably priced overall, but I have to side with the old saying of "you get what pay for" at these places.

Hope that helps a few people....

Hello everyone. I'm excited to say that it looks like I'll be joining PCOM's class of '09. Just as a heads up, I see nobody has mentioned the Andorra section of Philly for housing. It's just outside of Manayunk, safe, plenty of shopping, 11 miles to center city, and six miles to PCOM. It's on the outskirts of the city so rent is cheaper and there are plenty of Apt. Complexes out here. Not many studios, though, so you'll likely need a roommate to make them work out price wise. Good luck and I hope to see everyone this fall.

Their adcom meetings are usually around the 15th of each month. I got lucky and interviewed the day before the meeting last month, so it only took 2 days for me to find out. So two and a half weeks seems about right for you. Good luck.

Just wanted to say that I'm a first-year and I lived with two second-years this year. It was the best thing I could have done. Seriously. Hello Future Classmates,

A few questions:
-I had signed up for the Welcoming Brunch but ended up not being able to make it, did I miss anything vital?
-(maybe a question for the 2008ers) Other than having to have a car, is it much more expensive to live in Center City? Do a lot of students do this? I am moving from NYC (well, Brooklyn) but I fear suburban life...I know I will be studying non-stop but I prefer Philly proper so I just want to make sure I'm still being somewhat financially prudent.
-Very silly question: do you say "PCOM" with "com" pronounced as a word? or "P." "C." "O." "M."?

newyorkcougar

Hey Brooklyn...I live in Manhattan. Nice to see other New Yorkers going to my school!

The brunch was really fun and it was nice to meet other students. There were speakers, but all they said was "welcome to PCOM" and they gave us a few little PCOM imprinted treats. So you didn't really miss any vital information...just a lot of fun.

Everyone officail spelled the name of the school out, "P-C-O-M." But current students and other Philadelphia locals tended to call it "P-COM."

We should hang out in the city some time!

Since I am in the class of '08 I can't speak about the brunch but I can give you my opinions regarding your other questions. I'm from Brooklyn too so I have an idea where you're coming from.

As far as the cost of living in Center City vs. City Line, I have no idea. I pay around $500 and I am 2 minutes from campus. I know people who are 2 minutes away that pay over $1000. I think the area immediately around PCOM provides an urban lifestyle comparable to Staten Island. My experience this year has shown me that as much as I like the city lifestyle, 99% of my life has been preferentially spent within 2 miles of PCOM, which exclues Center City. It's nice because you really get used to needing a quiet environment. I know Center City is fun but I don't feel the need to go there too often, unless I'm going to a game or a post-exam party. Also, the numbers of first and second years that live downtown are pretty low. Most people live within a 10 minute car ride. If you like to attend lecture, limited Center City parking and the traffic situation on 76 creates a definite pressure to be as close to campus as possible

Lastly, the school is officially called "P.C.O.M." but we all call it "P-COM" anyway.

I'd be happy to answer any other first-year related questions from anyone on this forum.

I'm 99% sure it goes straight towards your tuition... though you may eventually get a loan refund close to that sum within the first trimester.

LHUEMT911

I believe the money is put towards your tuition. If you are getting a scholarship or if you want the money back and want your loans to cover it I would assume they will refund it, as long as they get the 2000 from somewhere. Hi guys! Just hopping onto the thread...apparently, I received my acceptance letter today (off the alternate list). I don't have it in my hands, as it was sent to my home address and I'm still away at college (2 weeks until graduation!) I am SO thrilled.

I know there's been some discussion about where to live. Seems like most people live around Manayunk, but some people do live in Center City. My significant other will be attending UPenn Law and he won't have a car (though I do have a car), so we're thinking of living in/near University City. Would it be difficult to commute from that area? It didn't seem like a long drive when I was there in March.

You have to call the tech office and ask for your password because i'm pretty sure it is only a digit off. I figured this out last week and sent them an email regarding the incorrect password information. I would have hoped they would have gotten back to everyone by now. Looking forward to meeting you all soon.
On a side note, if you have already moved to philly...
does anyone want to get together sometime for a few drinks downtown? I think it would be cool to be able to hang out with our new class before we have a silly amount of work to deal with. I'm down in old city so just reply on this thread or we can start a new one. Have a good day.

Yeah I called the Student Affairs office today, spoke to Bernice I believe her name was, and she was very nice. Transferred me to the tech people, and my password was indeed only off by one digit. So now my email works fine. But for some reason I can't get on the network because I can't get past the windows workstation login prompt, despite my following their directions. Still, it's a start...

Hi! I elected to join PCOM '09 and wanted to say hello to everyone here. Hopefully I'll be moving out to Philly in July, and until then, trying to figure out where to live, finishing work, etc. Can't WAIT to start classes and meet everyone! Anyone else moving from Ann Arbor/Michigan?

Hi everyone!

First off, congrats to those of you who have gotten in already. You've worked hard. You deserve it. I got off the WL last year the day before orientation was to begin and so far I have really enjoyed my time at PCOM. It's a great school and will provide you with a solid education.

HOUSING: Whatever apt/house you rent, try to get "utilities included." The cost of electricity is really high in Philly (compared to where I'm from, Virginia/DC) and can cost an extra $200, especially in the summer with the A/C blasting. Thankfully, I had a friend living in Philly who gave me this advice when I was hunting for places to live.

I live in "Greenbriar apartments" (down the street from PCOM campus) in an efficiency and pay only $695/ utilities INCLUDED. It's close, it's cheap, and it's quite. Thats why it's so popular with the students at PCOM. So...

****IF YOU PLAN ON MOVING TO GREENBRIAR APARTMENTS, PLEASE SEND ME A PM ON SDN**** (sorry for the all caps).

G'luck with everything...see you in August!

Hey all!

Congrats to you on your achievement--PCOM is a really excellent school. I wanted to let you know that my husband and I will be moving out of our apt in Manayunk (really large apt, 2br, 2bath + huge loft), vaulted ceilings, skylight, brand new kitchen, free parking, wonderful management company, super safe neighborhood and building, for around 1450/month. If anyone is interested (this is a great place for roomates, and it's about 7 minutes to school), please please feel free to pm me or respond to this post. Thanks and congrats to you all again! See you this fall!

I recieved my acceptance letter this week (off the alternate list). I am soo excited to come to PCOM!! I am curious on how to find a roommate....does the school provide a roommate list or anything like that? I am just looking for ways to cut down costs..

also, this question is for those who currently attend PCOM. I believe classes start Aug 15 and I will away for a family event from Aug 18-21. How will this affect me? What was first week of classes like? is a lot of material covered? Will I be left behind in work if I miss 2 days of classes and weekend of studying?

ANY advice will be very helpful!! Thanks

Still no luck here. I suppose it's as easy as placing another call to student affairs, who will transfer us to the tech folks, who will probably be able to resolve the problem in 10 seconds. I called yesterday, thus I haven't called back, as I don't want to be a pain. So it's your turn!

for those who are familiar with the summerstart program... does anyone, know how busy I'll be during this program? Would it be possible to hold down a summer job while attending this program? I wanted to see if I could squeeze a few dollars into my wallet before starting school in the fall, but I also want to do the summerstart program.

Unless you've taken medical school level gross anatomy before, I'd really recomend changing your plans. Anatomy goes so fast that even when you're there everyday, you feel like you're behind, at least for the first few weeks until you're used to it. In addition there are oral pop quizes in anatomy lab. They don't count for much, but you'll get really behind if you're not around for dissections the first week. In addition, the scribes notes for the first few weeks of the first year tend to be very unreliable bc the scribes are all new and inexperienced. The first few weeks of med school are stressful enough, and you'll make it a lot harder on yourself by missing a few days. On a lighter note, after anatomy is over in the 2nd and 3rd trimester, it's not a big deal to miss a few days. A lot of people don't even go to class at all, except for labs. But for anatomy, you just miss too much if you don't show up. Good luck next year.

Will it affect you? Yes, especially in the beginning. The first week of classes was brutal b/c you are not used to the material coming at you in light speed. Nothing in undergrad or any other graduate school compares. It is not conceptually difficult material just a Sh*t load of it. You would likely miss lab which could mean you will miss a quiz and/or a case conference. Hence your grade will be affected.

Greenbriar uses verizon avenue. You prob wont need to even bother setting it up, there are tons of unsecured wireless networks in that place.

congratulations to everyone coming to PCOM next year! I read through a few of the recent forums & as a current 1st year I think I can provide some definite answers to some of your questions..here I go..

1. Roommate info: I believe you will be getting a housing packet in the mail from student affairs. In addition, they have a large book they keep in the office that has all information regarding housing available from landlords and current students-I think they may also do a computer based database, but I don't know for sure. Give them a call..they don't mind

2. Tech stuff-Don't worry about calling too much-if they made a mistake, they expect you to call & would probably rather you call now then have you miss out on information & stuff because you waited until school started to get your password

3. Orientation/Financial Aid-Although it seems so close, it's only May and you will find out your financial aid info in plenty of time. I remember panicking b/c I didn't have housing/ financial aid info during the summer only to realize that I was ahead of schedule..so don't worry. About orientation, the girl in our class organizing it told us tentatively it is Aug 7th or Aug 8th and will last throughout the week-you will have a few days off definitely, it will be a lot of fun, & I think we got mailings and stuff about it last year, so you should, too...

Those are all the questions I remember seeing. So, RELAX and have fun this summer & don't worry, it'll be great next year. Look forward to seeing all of you around in August

:p -soon to be PCOM OMS II

I have a few questions regarding the Histology place-out exam. Any input would be much appreciated.

1) Is is a place-out for just the lab portion or the entire class, as I've heard differing answers from future students so far?

2) Is this a recommended thing to do, as in will I be at a disadvantage for PCOM's Pathology class after not taking their Histo?

3) Any details about the difficulty/style of the exam for someone who has previously taken Histo in undergrad? (as in very very detailed q's or not, comp. simulated vs. through microscopes, how many questions)

Thanks in advance for any input that you can provide.

Thanks in advance for any input that you can provide.

1) The place out exam is only for the lab portion of the class, we'll still be responsible for the lecture material. Basically we just wont have to take practical exams, and will not be required to attend Histo lab. Histo lab really sucks by the way.

2) All of my friends that are current first years recomend it. You can spend the extra few hours a week that you would be spending in histo lab studying anatomy. And if you do well on the test, its nice to start the year with an A as 20% of your grade. I'm not sure what the implications are for path, maybe some current students can shed more light on this.

3) The style of the exam is digitized images taken from slides inserted into a powerpoint presentation. I think like 25-30 questions, but there will be info on the specifics posted later on blackboard. As for preparation, I'm planning on using Histotime. Its a CD-Rom they have in the library that gives you a pretty good overview of each tissue and has quizes at the end. I used it for my masters histo class and got an A.

Question: If I try to test out of Histo and do not pass, this will not effect me right? Meaning that I will just have to take the lab and earn my grade then?

Also, how difficult is it to pass this test without having taken Histo in undergrad? I am planning on studying this summer though

You cannot test out of Histo without taking it before, whether post-bacc or undergrad. No it will not hurt you, it gets graded and you decide to take the grade or take the lab.

As to the book list there is really nothing hard and fast but I used the following this year.

Anatomy : Netter (Chung helps for review and Rohen helps when too burnt out for lab)
Development : Before we are born
OMM : Foundations
Primary Care : Bates
Biochem : Lippencott's Review of Biochem and my fiancee's undergrad book
Immuno : Parham
Microbio : Microbio Made Ridiculously Simple
Physio : Dubin for EKG, Board Review Series for Physiology
Pharm : Katzung
Path : Robbins
Medicine : Harrison's

Start the collection of board review books...

I'm looking into getting a new laptop as my one from college is old and struggling. Does anyone have any recommendations on specs so that it will be sufficient for the next four years (processor speed, ram, hardrive etc)? Also, for a wireless card, to be able to access the network when on campus would a b/g card be sufficient, or would I need an a/b/g card?

Thanks!

While I'm sure that you will find many people to disagree w/ me about Dell.....but for the price I paid I am thrilled w/ my Dell 600m. Perfect size and weight for me....and for under 1900$, with dell's weekly discounts, I have 4 years unconditional warrantee, 1.8 gig Pentium M, 1 gig RAM, 80 gig hard drive, wireless a/b/g, cd/dvd burner, svga+ screen, 64mb radeon video card, internal bluetooth and a carrying case.

People may complain about Dell's quality sometimes (which I find unfounded), but my 4 year complete coverage warrantee puts me at ease. Also, when configuring this computer with IBM/Sony/Toshiba it ends up at well over 3000$.

I'll admit that this is a bit of overkill for what we'll need during school...with all the discounts I got I maxed out a lot of the options above the necessities. If you check online you can find 750$ coupons for dell inspiron notebooks and if not, every few weeks the comp's are at least 20% off. Buying a comp is like buying a mattress in this regard...always on sale and no one should ever pay full price.

One other point is that I would have loved to get a mac powerbook, but I've heard that there may be some software that we get with textbooks, etc that are only pc compatible and I don't want to deal with the hassle of that later on down the road. Also, potential problems with future PDA's working with Macs were another reason.

Good luck with your decision. I'm sure some more technically inclined folks on here will offer some more advice.

Taus

As for what will be sufficient, I'm no expert, but I would assume that a 1.3 Pentium M (the min offered on some new laptops), 40gig hard drive, 512 RAM, and wireless b/g would get the job done just fine.

You will have to get a complete physical w/ immuno records before you matriculate, you will get a packet in the mail. Regarding the laptop, you don't need one, but if you are going to get one for school activities only, you can get away with the Pent M 1.3 / 40G HD / 512M RAM / b/g. You could even get a celeron if you are really strapped for cash. Taus did the right thing by getting the extended warrenty since Dell has a poor build quality reputation but I wouldn't get more than 2 years. Most problems are going to rear their head in that time frame and you are going to be more PDA based in your clinical years.

Ill add my two cents to what Ultimate said as we worked together alot our first year...

Anatomy : Netter (Chung helps for review and Rohen helps when too burnt out for lab, i also had a copy of atkins anatomy review on DVD, i loved using it, and i found that it really helps)

Development : Before we are born ( I never used this book)

OMM : Foundations (again never used it, i bought green savarese, enjoyed it and our class for the last two OMM exams put a packet together for the readings, your class may do the same)

Primary Care : Bates

Biochem : Lippencott's Review of Biochem (key for cell and tissue)

Immuno : Parham (read it to clarify various topics in Immuno, helpful

Microbio : Microbio Made Ridiculously Simple (learn to love this book)

Physio : Dubin for EKG, Board Review Series for Physiology (Ultimate is on the money, learn to love Dubin, BRS once again FTW  )

Pharm : Katzung (i did not use katzung but bought it, i felt comfortable using Lippicotts review of pharmacology, your mileage may vary)

Path : Robbins (learn it, love it, live it)

Medicine : Harrison's (see above for Robbins)

some people hated robbins, but then there were uber nerds like me who totally loved reading it, my cats also found it fascinating to sleep on occsionally....

As far as the PDA is concerned, am I correct in assuming that I will have no real use for it until clinical years?

Also, regarding the 2 year vs. 4 year warrantee, I agree with your thinking about when problems occur, however Dell's "Complete Care" accident coverage will 100% cover me should I spill or drop my computer at any time within these 4 years. Also, I'm going to be in no position financially to buy a new comp during these 4 years, so if something happens to my comp 3.5 years from now, I'll gladly accept a new one from Dell for free....

I've been looking up prices so I can budget for these books, but need a few things clarified, as several of them exist in a few variations.

1) Regarding Robbins for Path, is it:
a. Robbins Basic Pathology or
b. Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease
c. Robbins Review of Pathology
d. combo of text and review

2) Regarding Katzung for Pharm:
a. Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (Lange Basic Sciences)
b. Katzung and Trevors Pharmacology
c. Katsungs' Pharmacology: examination and board review
d. a combination of text and review

3) Harrisons' for Pharm
a. Harrisons' Manual of Medicine
b. Harrisons' Principles of Internal Medicine

It has something to do with when you were accepted to the school. I sent my in because it is due on the 25th. They gave two months. All it really requires is blood work showing you have titers to all the major disease MMR, Hep B (you can opt out), a tetnus and diptheria in the last 5 years and a TB test. You could go to your doctor ahead of time and get this done while you are waiting for the form.

I am wondering more about the finacial aid at this point.

You're correct, as it does depend on when you were accepted. I called to verify this when I had not recieved a few mailings that others had. Also, about the financial aid mailing, I got the fafsa/stafford one in the mail yesterday. I guess I'm going to put the pieces together for the private loans after the seminar this Friday.

I talked to financial aid the other day about when we will find out about private loans. The woman I spoke with said that they were still certifying loans for 2nd year students and would begin processing for incoming 1st years in 2 weeks. So hopefully we will know whats up by the end of the month.

On a side note...myself and others on this thread have expressed interest of having some sort of class meet up for those of us hanging around philly for the summer. So I'm going to throw out the idea of this Friday after the Financial Aid seminar. I figure alot of us will end up going so it would make for a good day to get together for a few drinks with our future classmates. I propose happy hour somewhere in Manayunk since its only like 5 mins from campus. If anyone else has any other ideas feel free to chime in.

I wish you all the best, you have a chalanging year ahead of you but it really does fly.

I can't seem to find the paper PCOM sent us about the financial aid presentation. What time are we supposed to arrive at? and where?

The financial aid presentation is at 1:00pm in the OMM lab in Evans Hall. It's supposed to run until 4. They are having a lunch before that I believe.

Thanks JonnyG. I was accepted on 2/16- were you accepted well before that? BTW- Thanks for the info. It's a relief since I've already had blood work showing titers, tetnus, HepB vacc, and TB testing- I guess I just need PCOM's forms so I can have my DO fill them out and send them in for me. There are specific PCOM forms to fill out, correct?

Hey everyone!
I don't know if many people are already familiar with myspace.com, but it's becoming really popular lately. I figured I'd start a group for the PCOM class of 2009. That way we can post pictures, get a better sense for who we all are, and maybe arrange to get together before orientation. If you're interested, here's the link:

Hey guys, I hope everyone is enjoying their last few weeks of sanity. I was curious how many of you are taking the optional biochem class. A lot of the people I spoke to at the finaid workshop said they were not taking it and was beginning to wonder if I would be the only one at the course.

I can't make it, as I'll still be in MI/PA. However, a friend of mine (to be MS II) said the course was worthless. Just what I heard though.

Where are you moving to? I'll be in Philly the last week of July. I'll be looking to relax and kick back in Philly with my classmates before school starts! PM me if you'd like to try to form a group to meet up!

Got the letter, but not interested. I guess it's probably that $2000 deposit thats keeping people from having a last minute change of heart.

Ok, so here are two questions:

1. Do we really need to have our books in class? Or are they the outside of class/at home reference and study material. Becuase quite frankly i cant remember the last time I actually brought a book to class, its not like we're going to take turns reading paragraphs are we!?

2. I'm fairly sure that i purchased the heaviest laptop known to mankind. The Dell Inspiron 5150 has a beautifully slender carry weight of about twice that of a normal laptop, weighing in at just under 10lbs. I was thinking about buying a second (less powerful and half as heavy) laptop to bring to class if necessary. I know LECOM requires their students to own and tote a laptop around to class, but how useful are they to us at PCOM????

Should I get back to heavy lifting at the gym to prepare to lug all this stuff around, or can I make it through with the paper and pen method???

Question 1. NO for in-class. Outside reading/reference - maybe. Now whether you really need it for outside reading/references dependings on the individual students and their study habbits

Question 2 - PCOM doesn't require any computers/laptops. They only require you have access to the internet (somehow) should you need to check your email while not-on-campus (since almost all major announcements occur via email). Many students get by w/o having any computers and just using the computer labs. I have never seen the computer lab completely FULL. Anyway, PCOM also offers wifi access throughout the first 2 floors and the 2 lecture halls (ginsberg and zedeck). Might be helpful to have the powerpoints on your laptop during lectures. But that's individual preferences. Most students like to print out the powerpoints so they can write down notes. Paper and pen method will work just fine if that's what you are used to.

Hope that helps

To all current/past PCOM students:

How useful do/did you find the "big" textbooks, ie Harrisons, Katzungs Pharm., Robbins Path., etc?

Do you need them in conjunction with lecture notes in order to adaquately prepare for exams or will the notes suffice? Or does it depend on the individual class/professor?

I am asking because in undergrad I stopped buying textbooks after 3 semesters, as I studied solely from my lecture notes. Will this get the job done w/ most PCOM classes or are the texts a necessity (ie more then the occasional, brief reference)? I did buy Netter and Rohen for anatomy as I've heard those, or at least Netter, are indispensible.

Thanks for any input/advice that you can provide.

So, Studenet Affairs hasn't sent me any love, after I asked them to (re) mail info re: white coat ceremony. Can someone tell me when (day and time) it is? Much appreciated!

They didn't put VARICELL-ZOSTER VIRUS on the form. You need titers and a vaccine immunization date.

i read in a couple of letters that we "will be receiving information in july" regarding lockers, parking, getting ID photos taken, white coat ceremony invitations, etc...but i didn't get any of that stuff. am i the only one here, or did you guys not get it either?

and that is ridiculous about more bloodwork. this will be the third time i have to get it done because the nurse wrote the wrong order for it the first time. oh, my arms...

I had to call the student wellness center and asked for the forms for the physical to be faxed to my house. Evidentally they just did a mass mailing on the 15th of July (not sure what all was mailed out besides the paperwork for getting a physical). The only thing that I heard about photo ID pics is that there is normally a lot of people in line during orientation week and they reccommend going before Aug. 9th. Again, not sure if we need paperwork before you can get the ID, you probly only need to show up with your driver's license. Already got parking information (parkade already full, but room in other lot), but still no word on lockers.
