Can a pharmacist volunteer their services just like doctors and nurses to help in need in the U.S.A. or foreign countries? I watch the heartwrenching tsunami footage on TV and wonder, can i help when I become a pharmacist if something like this occurs again? I've always wanted to help people as much as I can and that's why I've chosen to work in the healthcare field. I would love to be able to do something like that. However, I'm unaware of such opportunites available for pharmacists. I've heard of nurses, dentists, and doctors traveling abroad to help others who are in need. Would a pharmacist be necessary? I'm sure that doctors can dispense medications themselves and wouldn't need a pharmacist, right?

Thanks for your input! I look forward to some responses.

Hey, I'll send you a couple of links to relief/health mission organizations, many of which have pharmacists or need them or would want them if they knew they were available............many of these organizations are Christian-based to let you know up front

My school participates in a program where the medical students and pharmacy students go to (I think) Guatemala to help out people there (or somewhere nearby) every year.

Here (http://www.docareintl.org/upcoming.htm) is a little more information about upcoming events.

Thanks a lot! I hope the school that I chose to attend has a program like this.

You could go to work for the Indian Health Service and get paid a little bit to do it.
