I did an elective at NYEEI and had a chance to speak with a lot of the residents. First off, both are excellent ophtho programs. Both are large, taking 7 residents/year. Both will train you to be good ophthalmologists. In terms of reputation, I believe there's no real difference between the 2 since the merger between NYU/MEETH. Before the merger, NYEEI had a better reputation. At the NYEEI you do everything in 1 location for the most part. There's only 1 affiliated hospitals (Beth Israel, where you do some peds) but no VA rotations and no separate pediatrics hospital. At NYU, the set-up is more spread out. You rotate through 5 different hospitals (Bellevue, Tisch, their VA hospital, Lenox Hill & MEETH) There are pros and cons to both. I personally like the variety of going to different hospitals. The main difference I believe is the quality of life for the residents. Residents at NYEEI work notoriously hard. They have a reputation for this and it's well deserved. The chairman, PD & residents will tell you this on interview day. The typical day starts at 7:30 on non-surgical days and usually goes past 6:00 pm. The worst I've heard was till 9:00 pm on a non-call day. Calls are usually pretty busy too. Then there are the Saturday clinics which most residents hate. According to the grapevine, only a handful of programs in the nation work its residents as hard as the NYEEI. There's also the reputation that residents at other programs are happier. Not sure if this is 100% true but some of the residents I've spoken with confirmed this, saying their friends at other NYC programs have a lot more time to relax and enjoy the city. If you want to work hard, NYEEI is definitely a place you'd want to consider. Again I think both are outstanding programs. It all depends on what you're looking for. singkwon 01-09-2005, 09:02 PM I've done electives at BOTH NYU and NYEEI. So here are my $0.02. I must say that NYEEI is much better than NYU. The residents at NYEEI are much more thorough in their exams, they are much more confident in their skills, and they are happier with their teaching. At NYU, speaking to the more senior residents, they say that there is not enough surgical volume, residents fight to get enough cases (and this is due to the fact that NYU is overshadowed by NYEEI's reputation of being an "eye hospital" in NYC), and there is not enough faculty guidance. It is true that residents at NYEEI work very hard, but that is because of the tremendous volume and they come out extremely competent. If you were going to hire a graduating resident, wouldn't you want someone who has done 150+ cataracts (like NYEEI residents) versus someone who has barely met the minimum requirements? Even residents at NYEEI who don't go on to a retina fellowship get to do 5-10 vitrectomies before they finish. You would be lucky at NYU to get these kinds of numbers. I definitely think that NYEEI is a higher caliber program than NYU for training. They are programs that are in different leagues. orbitmd 01-10-2005, 03:25 PM Since the topic is on some of the NY schools, does anyone have any opinions on the Long Island Jewish/Northshore program? speyeder 01-12-2005, 09:56 AM I've done electives at BOTH NYU and NYEEI. The numbers I've been told regarding cataracts were closer to 130 than 150+ at NYEEI. TeddyKGB 01-18-2005, 07:11 AM Thanks for your help everyone. |
