YOu know, of all the times I have gone to Calcutta (6 times), I have never actually made the "official tour" of Victoria memorial hall. We always used to drive past it (and I remember some race-horse track being opposite to the hall), and it didn't look anythig spectacular. We went to the zoo instead.

Polish jokes...ummm...okay:

No offence to any Polish people out there, they are really nice individuals!

"Three guys work on a construction site. One is white, one is black and one is Polish. The bell rings for lunch and the white man opens his lunch bag and sighs deeply, saying, "If my wife packs me a ham sandwich again tomorrow I'm jumping off the building." The black guy opens up his lunch, glares and says " If my wife packs me a ham sandwich again tomorrow, I'm going with you." The Polish man opens his lunch, pulls out another ham sandwich, and says "I'm with you guys."
The next day the lunch bell rings. The white man opens his lunch. He says, "Turkey sandwich. I love my wife." The black guy opens his lunch. He says, "Chicken sandwich. I love my wife. The Polish man opened his lunchbox, looked stricken, and said " See ya guys." With that, he jumped off the building. The black guy says " I feel sorry for him. "The white man replies, "Why?" The black guy said, "Because he packs his own lunch.'"

Now why do sardars go crazy at 12 o'clock?

During the Mughal raids, the Sikhs were outnumbered so fought a guerilla war. Originally they were peaceful with both sides, but when the Mughals began taking Hindu women back, the Sikhs were asked to fight the Mughals, which they did. They did nightly raids on the Mughal camps to release the taken women at around midnight. So this was the time people came out without fear of being taken up or killed. (Incidentally, this is also when the burkha made its appearance in India; women would wear it so no-one could see their face.) Anyhow, the Sikhs were known as 12 o'clock Sikhs. After independance, this became a derogatory comment.

I'm punjabi too...but i never knew the reson for the 12 o'clock jokes....until someone sent me this forward--

" I was standing at the Jalandhar station when my attention went towards a Sikh youth standing near me wearing a Black turban having a long beard and wearing a kirpan over his shirt looking similar to a so called Sikh "terrorist".

After a while, one local train arrived, which was totally packed. The Sikh youth tried to alight the train but failed to do so. Just then a voice was heard from the back coach 'Sardarji Barah Baj gaye' (Sir it's 12 o'clock!)

The Sikh youth looked over at that voice maker who was a young mischievous type of person and instead of showing any anger passed a smile towards him.

The smile made was so enigmatic that it seemed as if some type of truth lies behind it. Not able to resist my temptation, I walked towards him and asked why did he smile at that person who teased him. The Sikh youth replied, 'He was not teasing me but was asking for my Help'. I was surprised with these words and he told me that, there was a long history behind it, which one should know. I was eager to know the History and the Sikh youth narrated:

During the 17th Century, when Hindustan was ruled by Mughals, all the Hindu people were humiliated and were treated like animals. Mughals treated the Hindu women as there own property and were forcing all Hindus to accept Islam and even used to kill the people if they were refusing to convert. That time, our ninth Guru, Sri Guru Teg Bahadarji came forward, in response to a request of some Kashmir Pandits to fight against all these cruel activities. Guruji told the Mughal emperor that if he could succeed in converting him to Islam, all the Hindus would accept the same.

But, if he failed, he should stop all those activities . The Mughal emperor happily agreed to that but even after lots of torture to Guruji and his fellow members he failed to convert him to Islam and Guruji along with his other four fellow members, were tortured and sacrificed their lives in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. Since the Mughals were unable to convert them to Islam they were assassinated.

Thus Guruji sacrificed his life for the protection of Hindu religion. "Can anybody lay down his life and that too for the protection of another religion?" This is the reason that Guruji is still remembered as "Hind Ki Chaddar" - the Shield of India. For the sake of whom he had sacrificed his life, none of the them had the guts to come forward to take away his body for cremation, fearing that they would also be assassinated

Seeing this incident, our 10th Guruji, Sri Guru Gobind Singhji (Son of Guru Teg Bahadarji) founder of khalsa, made a resolution that he would convert his followers to such human beings who would not be able to hide themselves and could be easily located in thousands. At the start, the Sikhs were very few in numbers as they were fighting against the Mughal emperors. At that time, Nadir Shah raided Delhi in the year 1739 and looted Hindustan and was carrying lot of Hindustan treasures and nearly 2200 Hindu women along with him. The news spread like fire and was heard by Sardar Jassa Singh who was the Commander of the Sikh army at that time. He decided to attack Nadir Shah's Kafila on the same midnight. He did so and rescued ALL the Hindu women and they were safely sent to their homes.

It didn't happen only once but thereafter whenever any Abdaalis or Iranis had attacked and looted Hindustan and were trying to carry the treasures and Hindu women along with them for selling them in Abdal markets, the Sikh army although fewer in numbers but were brave hearted and attacked them at midnight (under the cover of darkness),12 O'clock and rescued the women.

After that time when there occurred a similar incidence, people started to contact the Sikh army for their help and Sikhs used to attack the raider's at Midnight, 12 O'clock. So the news spread that at 12 O'clock, the Sikhs go off their senses. But, its the historic fact, which was the reason that made me smile over that person, as I thought that his Mother or Sister would be in trouble or need and calls out for my help and was reminding me by saying off 'Sardarji Barah Baj Gaye'
Its easy to joke on a Sardar, but It's too difficult to be a Sardar......"

I had no idea of all this before...

03-19-2005, 04:48 PM
Most of my friends just happen to be girls, and a lot of them are Punjabis and Gujjus (they are the majority of desis over here). And Gujjus "can" be cute you say?? They usually have that look from the get-go :D . The one problem I've encountered is that there are some desi girls who try and put waaay too much emphasis on looks rather than smarts. I can't stand a girl that talks gobor and doesn't have a clue what she is talking about (most evident during class discussions or when they are put on the spot). Sunny doens't like rambling girls.

Funny story, there was this one girl that wanted me to sit beside her on the bus ride home (which is about 30-45min from our campus). She kept talking and talking about some boy problem she had (which I think she made up), and I kept nodding my head. At some point she asked me if I was boring her with her conversation. Forgetting that she asked me a question, I replied "yes". She was like "what???" I then quickly covered myself and said, "I mean yes I understand your problem, and I wasn't bored at all". I couldn't really tell her to keep quiet :D .

 awww... i know Indian girls can be drama queens... but the emphasis on looks rather than brains on their part really is a reflection of what the guys prefer themselves... No its not true for everyone...but come on now  -- it is with most people...you might not be one of them...so  to you
...And the poor girl in the bus was just trying to get your attention...indian girls can't be direct..so they have to figure out creative ways to do it...
I'm just surprised that you sat through the entire rant with your mouth shut---from what i gather about you from this forum---you always have an opinion....so must have taken a lot for you to stay put and just listen... ;)

^ This girl was in my Post-Colonial lit class, and when she found out we took the same bus home, she always found ways so that we would go home together. That particular bus ride home, I arrived late and the bus was packed like crazy. All of a sudden, someone started tugging on my jacket. Guess who it was?? :D My options were to stand or to sit down and put up with her. So I sat hehe. The thing with this girl was that she had the same story to tell me, with no end in sight. So when she was done (approximately 20 minutes), I told her to drop the guy that she was interested in, to tell her parents that she was interested in a boy, and that I could not go with her to be her escort when she met this so-called boy. I was very a blunt with her near the end, but then she started revealing personal stuff (IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BUS) and my friend was sitting right behind us and he couldn't even believe that she was saying this stuff. Really unusual girl if you ask me.

I know Indian girls are somewhat more restricted by their parents than guys, but the one thing I tell everyone is not to hide behind your parents' back and lie to them when you are going to meet another guy/girl. Poeple don't know how to face their parents. My parents would freak out if I had a gf, but they would have to deal with it.

I've even started testing the waters concerning my "future wife", such as telling them I'd get me a Turkish lady (HAHAHAA :D ), they grudgingly and wearily said ok, but then offered to take me to India and start looking LOL!!! Anyways, I even told them upfront if I did get a gf, then they'd know.

God...!! don't even get me started on people who try to keep their affairs from their parents...Its ok if you want to do it...but gets awkward for the friends...I just hate having to lie and cover up for them later...it happened to me with a frnd who told her mom she was coming over to my house...and then went someplace with her guy...and then suddenly Big B drops by my place...asking to speak with her...and I had no idea where she was...i jumped into my car and was turning right from the driveway when I saw her parents coming...waving at me...scared coz I had no idea what to say...I took a quick left and just drove away...then I went to all the places I knew they went together..I drove around for like 1.5 hours.....and then ultimately decided to go to her bf's house...who then told me that he had dropped her off 15 minutes ago at my place!! And this guys mom ...looks at me...looks at him...and goes "how many gf's do you have?!!" ...I left there and got home...only to be confronted by her parents !! <<...they saw her get off his car and run to my house...they were hiding in the neighbors garage...how sneaky!! >> and then my parents as well...By the way ..I had forgot to tell mine that I was heading out... because at that moment I kind of panicked coz my frnds mom was...well...scary :scared: .....really strict....so I had just left...and so it was about 11pm in the night when I got back...and they had no idea where I had run off too......Lets just say..it was a loooooooonnng long night...had a lot of explaining to do...all while her brother "all protective- crazy types" promised to beat the guy up....

Well... I really would hate to hurt my parents the way hers were that night...so they know about everything from day 1... but they trust me not to do anything stupid...they know I value my future to much to waste it away in a sec...But then again....some parents are so rigid and strict...this is not possible with them then....

already talking abt marriage...how old are u?...WHen it comes times for marriage...oh you are going to luv it...my cousin is going through that ..my grandpa (don't picture an old guy here...he's an ex-army officer...and people usually take him for our dad!!..plus he's mr. stubborn alright) back in india keeps talking to prospective matches...and sending him pics and stuff!! They are all so "not for him" he says...but we like to tease him...like putting up all the pics in his room--on his bed...or on his mirror...and then he walks in and his "not funny!!" "i'll kill you guys!", or "ok...it's not happening!" resounds through the house... poor guy...he is so fed up ...!

sunny123
03-20-2005, 03:22 PM
^ that must have been some night. When I go to my friends house, she is always scared that her cousin (who lives a few houses down) will see my car and decide to "stop-by" (by stopping by, I mean that he will come into the house, and sit in the living room and watch what I say to his cousin). He is a protective guy, which I understand, but my friend is kinda nervous when it comes to guys at her house (one phone call from her aunt goes to her parents, who will drive up to her place). As for the whole marriage talk, I'm only 22, so nothing is in the works for me (until after I get my MD), but I already see how the other aunties with daughters are eyeing me and are introducing their daughters to my mom. It is soooo funny, cause I know they wouldn't be my type. You know, just to keep their daughter in mind. Maan, there was one girl who was introduced by her mom and she was such a dunce that it was too funny.

My grandpa was doing the same thing with one of my cousins (picture an elderly man :D ), and he wanted to take out some advertisements in the paper. Apparently my cousin objected and wanted to be left alone lol. As for sending pics as prospects... my gujju friend showed me this email she got from some guy in Houston, and we were all making fun of her hehe.

I guess that is Indian life, as soon as you finish uni/college, your parents go on a bride/groom hunt cause for some reason it's open season!

People, instead of feeling homesick or reading Sunny's comments (j/k :p ),

Let us try to make an effort to create India here in the West. A cultural bond, a desire to help make India better in any way possible. Let us be good ambassadors of India (unlike Sunny who eats too much junk food :p ) in any positive way possible.
I think we need to realize that migration from India will continue so we should try to network, form better organizations and have fun at the same time. That way we are making things easier for those who come here after us and also benefit from what they can bring to the table.
Unless we do something constructive, we are bound to feel empty. (Like Sunny who simply does nothing :p )

Thanks for the sector explanation meet and hopeful. In Calcutta, specifically the area of Salt Lake, the whole area is based on water tank numbers (which is totally weird).

Ohh ok, then who is Johnny Walker?
Johnny Walker was another comedian who had long distinuished career as a comedian in Hindi movies. I personally have seen his Pyasa, Madhumati, Naya Daur and Chachi 420 (released in 1998). Though his career spanned nearly half a century majority of his movies are from 50's and 60's. I think he is no more now probably he died 2-3 years ago. I personally remeber him for his song "champi Malish" from film Pyasa (One of Guru Dutt's classics and my personal favourite).

As far as Johnny Liver is concerned I love some of his jokes. I also have some of his audio cassettes. Recently a week ago i have seen him perform live at GMC's college festival called Astitva 2005 where he was judge for many of intercollege cultural competiotions.

Johny Lever is the dark short guy in all contemporary hindi movies- a good but loud comedian!
this is him

Johny Walker was a comedian in old black and white indian movies- usually a side kick of Dev Anand and many more- but quite better at it then the Johny Lever see him

Find out just what it is like to have a Tamilian Girlfriend:

* Her mother looks down at you because you didn't pass out from Anna
University/Loyola.
* Her father starts every conversation with `I say...'
* She shudders if you use four letter words.
* She shudders when you eat eggs.
* Eat non-veg, and she'll throw up on your face.
* She has long hair, neatly braided.
* She uses the word `Super' as her only superlative.
* Her name is another name for a Goddess or a flower.
* Her first name is longer than your first name, middle name and
surname combined.
* She seduced you. And then told all her cousins.
* When she mixes milk and rice you are never sure whether it is for
the Dog or for herself.
* On weddings she sports a mini jasmine garden on her head and wears
silk saris in Madras heat without looking too uncomfortable while you
are melting in your singlet.
* She thinks Arvind Swami is the sexiest man alive.
* Her favourite cricketer is Kris Srikkant.
* Her favourite food is dosa though she has tried `North Indian snacks
like Chats (pronounced like the slang for conversation)'
* She doesn't mind if you wear white trousers with contrasting
undergarments.
* She bursts into song with her cousins in every movie. She bores you
by telling you which raaga each song you hear is based on.
* You don't have to give her jewelry, she'll be happy if you got her
flowers instead.

Johny Lever is the dark short guy in all contemporary hindi movies- a good but loud comedian!

Johny Walker was a comedian in old black and white indian movies- usually a side kick of Dev Anand and many more- but quite better at it then the Johny Lever

Cleared??
Yup it's all clear now :D I haven't seen any Johnny Walker movies but definitely seen Johnny Lever. Thx

Except from gujarat, Andhrapradesh tried to put a ban but it failed lately and they took up the alcohol ban! There is alcohol ban in Himachal Pradesh too!

Casinos are banned in the whole of india! Indians go Nepal to gamble- if they cannt manage to find illegal clubs nearby!!! ha ha

..........In Calcutta, specifically the area of Salt Lake, the whole area is based on water tank numbers (which is totally weird)..............

I don't think so. Either, you travelled too many times in those public buses or, in ricksaws. Salt Lake is the only part of Kolkata that is scientifically divided into Sectors and Blocks. Bujhlen Bhai.

What does me travelling in a bus or rickshaw have anything to do with me noticing tank numbers posted in Salt Lake?? I may not be from Salt Lake, but that is where we stay whenever we visit India, and all the directions are based upon where such and such place is close to what number tank.

And I'll squeeze the rasogolla if I want to. Bujhlen Bhai. :)

Umm...Nainital is a hill-station in a valley surrounding a beautiful lake....in UTTAR PRADESH....near Almora and ranikhet....Its beautiful...i loved the boat rides....and they specialize in candles....and the flowers their are beautiful too....and the monekkys are notorious for stealing food....and waking people up by jumping on the tin roofs early in the morning....also most of the time you can see the mist over the lake...its gorgeous...so you went there..ok...but weren't allowed further into kashmir?...from UP?
or are you mixing nainital with some other place?
although...i must say that its true...even normally...all parts of J & K are not accessible to civilians...but thats for your own safety...but you can make it to leh-ladakh....and that is just beyond imagination....it is beautiful....alot of foreign travellers make it there...you can see them biking up and down the hills...mostly down the hill though!!
But there are alot of buddhist temples to go to...interesting people and very diff. lifestyle....the silver jewellry in their markets drove me crazy.... but be careful...i got a serious allergy to some flower pollen while i was there...that sucked!!

I read somewhere that Konkanis in the US make it a point to meet every year.

The CEO of Infosys is a Konkani !

Nandan Nilekani

yeah they do, my fam and i just keep a huuuge distance between us and all that. -- it's all just gossip anyway. mad waste of time. i went to ONE in my entire life- it was this picnic and oddly enough i felt as though i didn't fit in. like you'd think their priorities lie in preserving their konkani identities... well def not. i was the only young adult there who spoke konkani at home, the rest were all "americanized".. it was such a hypocritical situation.. hard to explain any further.
i didn't know the CEO of infosys was konk. very cool.
