I just got a regional interview too. Do they give you more information about the school since you don't get to see it yet? Where was your regional interview at?

They don't give you any packet of information on the school at my interview, just a broshure, but you can always ask the interviewer about the school. Mine was at Philly, good luck.

Hey nervouspremed and Uegis,
You should definitely visit slu. Its a great place for med school. I don't remember if I got any packet of info, but you can find everything on their website. Good residency matches, awesome clinical training, facilities and faculty.

Hey Pakidoc, I am thinking of visiting the school, and where would you recommed to stay for the night. I know they have the student-run program, but I dont' have a sleeping bed, so I am thinking about staying at a hotel. What's the cheapest way to get from the Airport to the school? Thx

You can take the Metrolink from the airport to the school. It costs about $2 or $3 and it takes about 20-25 minutes. Pretty good deal. If you stay at a hotel, there is one on campus that is owned by SLU. It's called the Water Tower Inn I think. It's a few blocks away from the medical school but there is a shuttle that takes people from the hotel to the medical school and even to the Metrolink station after your interview to get to the airport.

St. Louis is a great city to visit. The SLU campus is also very pretty. I suggest that you visit the campus sometime before or after your interview if your interview is not in St. Louis. My on-campus interview only lasted until 2, so the day was not all that long as compared with my other interviews.

Just a quick question, I know SLU is a Jesuit school; does that mean that they don't perform abortions/condone stem cell research/etc.?

Congratulations on your acceptances to SLU med (and good luck to those of you still interviewing)! As a MSI at SLU who had opportunities to go elsewhere, I understand how difficult of a decision some of you have to make, but I also know that I couldn't be happier with my choice. My advice is to just follow your heart (total cheese I know)

I noticed a question about the first year schedule...

here's a link to the overview of the first year curriculum (what they hopefully gave you in the interview)....

here's a link to this years class schedule....
http://oca.slu.edu/calendar/phase12004.pdf

And as for being a Jesuit institution, yes that means that you are not taught abortion procedures third year. Although the Catholic church opposes stem cell research (I think), as an academic institution the debate is open here. Some researchers/physicians you talk to oppose it, others support it (isn't that how it is across most of the nation?) Other than not being taught abortion procedures, there isn't any impact on your education - just the environment you are in. Not that everyone is Catholic, or Christian, but it is just a more supportive and encouraging environment (in my humble opinion).

If you have any more questions about SLU, I'll try to answer when I have time!

Again congrats and good luck!

I interviewed late October and didn't get my acceptance until January; this was primarily due to my interviewer being on sabbatical until January in Philadelphia and having to get back to SLU in January to present my file. I guess it kind of depends on when your regional interviewer gets to the Adcom?

Anybody know when does the day end with an on-campus interview?

pakidoc
02-12-2005, 09:31 PM
I had my interview early morning... my day ended after lunch, ie, at 1:30
However, some had their interview as late as 3:30. So it depends on when your interview is

Kazema

I think it depends on when your interview is scheduled. Mine is at 3:30 pm so I got a 6:30 plane ticket, hopefully I don't get burned assuming my interview will end by 5-ish.

Hi! I'm the one who pakidoc knows to have had a 3:00 pm interview that went past 4:00 pm. I believe it was like 4:10 pm when I got out. The actual interview day itself, i.e. tour, lunch, talk with medical students etc, ended around 1:00 pm, so I had two hours with absolutely nothing to do but sit in a dingy yellow conference room staring at the ceiling. I interviewed with Dr. Westerman, who according to the admissions staff, is known to give looong interviews. He was very nice, and I'm sure if I had told him I had to get out of there, he'd have obliged. My flight was at 6:50 pm, and I made it just fine. I had to be at work the next day too -- bright and early at 7:30 am,

Good luck on your interview! :D You'll rock!

Just got back from St. Louis. I absolutely loved the school and the city but I can't really explain why. It just felt right to me. Can't explain it.

Dean Willmore is definitely a very laid-back interviewer. But so laid-back that I started to feel a bit paranoid that he wasn't really interested in interviewing me. After my interview (short one, 30 minutes) I kept thinking, "Oh, I should've said this," or "Oh damn I forgot to say this." Now I'm all anxious about this school; I have to say that I'm surprised by how much I liked it.

I can't help feeling that I screwed up but I don't know if I'm just being ridiculous. Probably because my other interviews have all been like an hour long. And I walked out of those feeling really confident about how I did and not so much here. Guess all I can do is wait and hope ;).

Congrats all going to SLU... it is a great school. I'm a STL native, so if you have any questions, feel free to contact me (lurking from the pharm boards). STL is like a really big small town... everyone is somehow linked to everyone else... it's actually a pretty cool atmosphere.
Anyway, best of luck!!

I would say the curriculum here at SLU is the best thing about the med school. We use block scheduling here and have 2 classes going on at the once during the first year and 1 system at a time second year. One makes it great is that there isn't a test every week. Probably more like every 3 weeks, but sometimes on Saturdays. You would be surprised how many of my other med school friends complain about having a test every week with no end in sight. If you have questions let me know.

I had Dr. Willmore too. I too felt that. He has written a book on interviewing for medical school (I later heard) and he's known for taking an unconventional approach to interviewing. He really wants to get to know if each person is right for the school. He wasn't shooting to stump me with riddles, ethical questions, or motivation questions. He was just trying to get a bigger picture, something I totally appreciated but at the same time was hard to get a good read.

For me, I didn't get into my application until the last 10 minutes of my application. And that was only to ask how to pronounce some of the names I had listed on the activities list. Did you see the machine on his desk? I had to guess what it was. I thought it was an interviewing torturing device.

I just heard back and man am pumped. I got to stay with students so I got in the inside scoop.

Does anyone know when class is supposed to start for 2005-06 year?

What should we be doing for financial aid? I filled out the FAFSA in January, and I haven't heard a thing from the school!

Looking through my info I came across that sheet, so maybe I am wrong.

Does anyone know what anatomy book SLU students use?

Beanie
03-01-2005, 12:17 AM
To answer some questions:

First, Financial Aid. Welcome to SLU - aka debt. There is nothing you can do about the cost of tuition (we actually had the lowest rise in tuition for the upcoming year of all schools at St. Louis U), so just learn to accept the fact that you are going to accumulate debt. First years generally don't recieve scholarship money. Starting second year it supposedly starts getting a bit easier to get some more univeristy aid. You won't hear back from financial aid until sometime in April/May when they have compiled your aid package. You will get all the aid you need one way or another (aka private loans), so there is nothing to really worry about.

FREE time in St. Louis? The Budweiser brewery tour is free and you get free samples in the tasting room at the end. Or the arch is always a good option. Forest Park, home of the free St. Louis Zoo, free Art Mueseum, and free History Museum is also a good time. And there is also the ever popular free City Museum and free Science Center. Have I mentioned that this is all free?

Anatomy Books? My my... we have some overachievers. Just joking with you. You will definitely use Netters Atlas in the Gross Lab (and that copy will stay in the lab as your juicy, dirty copy). For personal studying? Most of my classmates and I used Nettters. Some of the professors preferred Grants and used it's illustrations in class (the cross-sections/surface anatomy figures in Grants sometimes appeared on the "slides" portion of our exams). An imaging atlas (X-rays, CT, MRI) is also helpful for the slides portion of the exam. A lot of my friends also bought Rohen's color atlas of anatomy - it is full of actual pictures of beautiful dissections... supposedly like what you do in lab, but unfortunately none of my classmates (nor I) are as talented as Mr. Rohen and friends. Anyways, my advice? Check out the books in a medical bookstore and compare similar pictures. Figure out which one you feel most comfortable with, and get that. Oh, and remember, that no matter what school you go to, there will likely be a book fair sometime orientation week at which you can get gently used books for a good deal cheaper than any bookstore.

My final words for now...Don't, I repeat, DON'T freak out if you don't hear anything from SLU from now until the beginning summer. Communication with incoming students is definitely not one of our greatest strengths. But please don't let that reflect on the school. (Keep in mind that SLU has a pretty large turnover rate once waitlists start moving). Once you get here, I PROMISE that everyone is more than helpful. You will be asking people to stop helping you and stop giving you information. But until then, if you have any questions, feel free to ask me or call financial aid or call admissions.

Again, Congrats and Good Luck!

I dunno the last time you've been but the City Museum is definately not free. I had to pay an arm and a leg to get me and my brother in there. It's fun but constantly infested with kids. Not to mention the fact that no actual learning takes place there.

All the other stuff is fun and free though.

I still recommend the brewery tour.

For those who have been accepted, What do you like/dislike about the school? Did you noticed that the students weren't too close-knited with each other (perhaps because SLU has no dorms)? Did you find the medical school building a little run-down? the surrounding area a little scary (one guy had his car stolen 3 times in 2 years)? the professors kind of aloof?

I didn't go to an interview where the med school had dorms all year, so SLU not having them seemed normal, though its students did live more all over the city then my other interviews - leading me to feel the same way you did about the class. Facilities were not the greatest, but they werent bad. I really thought the campus was quite appealing. The neighborhood behind campus was borderline slummy. Students are made aware of where not to park, I would be somewhat uncomfortable attending school and not being entirely comfortable around campus. Professors seemed cool, sat in a on seminar, very interesting. For the reasons you said, and I elaborated on, and because of the cost to attend SLU, I will not be matriculating there, though I do feel it is a nice school. Just not for me (or you) apparently.

Does anyone have update on SLU's financial aid procedures? As far as I know, there are 3 applications associated w/ SLU FA:

1. FAFSA
2. Need Access Group Application
3. On-line institutional Aid form

does anyone know the deadline for filing the Need Access Group Application? Also, can anyone access the On-line institutional Aid form?

I got the letter of acceptance from SLU about a week ago. I was pretty surprised since Dean Wilmore although nice, didn't seem that interested in what I had to say. But, I got in so I must've done something right. Congrats to all of you.

You don't know how happy that makes me, because I felt the same vibe from Dean Willmore after my interview.

I think someone else earlier in the thread mentioned that it's his interviewing style.

Quick question for those more familiar with St Louis Med...

I sent in my application in mid February since the first them I sent my application, it was lost in mail and St Louis never bothered to tell me. Does that mean I will pretty much get automatically get rejected soon since my app was received so late?

They told me I could just mail them another check and that my app would be reviewed. I'm pretty sure Ill get a rejection letter because its so late even though my stats are decent but kinda frustrated with the mailing service... Vermont cashed my check but said they didnt get my letter of recs and I had to send UCSD my letters of recs twice too. I knew USPS was bad but not THIS bad.

Alright, I'll take another round at the questions/concerns. Remember this is just my humble opinion or my limited knowledge.

Car theft. Welcome to St.Louis, the 2nd (or 3rd) leading city in crime in the US. Most of the crime though thankfully is just that - car theft. They've started cracking down on it, but it's still a bit rampant. The solution? Buy a CLUB at your nearest WalMart, pay the money to park in the garage/gated lots, pay to park off the street wherever you live, don't leave your car downtown overnight, don't have anything of great value visible in your car. Be smart.

The neighborhood. SLU is an urban hospital with an urban population and has made that to be it's mission. So where better to be than in an urban area? That does NOT mean that you have to live there. Yes the neighbrohood may seem a bit shady (it still does to me every now and again), but again if you are smart you will be safe. Trust me when I say the neighborhood is not the worst of St. Louis. I have never not felt safe on campus. It may just be that I am that naiive, but I like to think that I'm smart about it - walking in the lighted areas or with other people, parking in gated lots, etc. - in addition to the actual campus security (there is always a cop stationed at night near the parking lots and where you walk).

Financial Aid. The easiest way to have your questions answered is to just call the FA office. They are all really nice and know how confusing all this money stuff can be to us, so don't be shy. 314. 977.9840

Student living. Yes we do seem to be spread out a bit over the city. But I think that is because St. Louis offers so many different (and affordable) living options. If you want to live Downtown, or in a happening neighborhood (Central West End), or in a quieter part (South county) or in a house, STL has got you covered. Does that impact our class dynamics? Nope. We still all manage to study together, and go out together, and relax together. While St. Louis is a city, it's not New York, DC, Chicago, or LA. It's very quick to get from one part of town to another.

Second Look. We don't have a second look weekend :( Sorry. Hopefully, maybe, we can get something put together over this next year to offer it then. (Although that is of no help to you).

Orientation/Start Date. Man, I haven't gotten through this year and you already are asking me to think about next? Just kidding with you. I believe we start school August 8th so orientation week would be the week before that. At least that is the date that has stuck in my head for some reason. Plan on early August!

Remember that you have to make this decision for yourself, that may seem pretty obvious, but I think it is sometimes easy to get caught up in others opinions (I know I struggled with that last year) - a good school for you may not be the right school for everyone else!

Hope that helps! Again congrats, and good luck to all of you!

The 1st and 2nd year classes have a housing website for recommendations on places to live....

http://medschool.slu.edu/housing/

It is in the process of being updated so things may be changing a bit. But for a good overview of various areas you can live in St. Louis check out "Getting to Know St. Louis".

Another site to check out is the housing forum (especially if you are looking for roommates) You will have to e-mail student affairs for a passcode.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me and I'll try to help the best I can or find someone else to help you out!

'Sup fellow SLUMed declining buddy! I just received my financial aid offer from SLU as well (a week later than they said it would come, I might add). All I received was loan offers at SLU, the most expensive school I applied to. I received far better offers at cheaper schools, even a state school (UMich).

I wouldn't expect to hear as quick as they told you (3-4 weeks). I interviewed at the beggining of March and they told us the same thing. After over a month of waiting I broke down and called. They told me that they are way behind processing applications this year, and that I would have to wait a couple more weeks. My acceptance came on May 7, so it was around 2 months before I heard. Who knows though, maybe with May 15th fast approaching they are getting more on the ball.

I didn't really get too much exposure when I was back there. It sounds sweet to be able to walk to class, but not if its in a bad neighborhood. Also, if anybody knows, what is safety like around the SOM. Can you walk around after dark? Thanks for calming (or fueling) my paranoia.

Is it me or does this actually happen to most people admitted to SLU?! I called them at least 6-7 times during the past 2 weeks (on many different days, too!), and the phone is always answered by this girl who says that she knows NOTHING! and seriously, she doesn't even know the estimated budget for the M1 class. not just that, when i asked her whether it's possible to speak to someone with the knowledge, THAT someone is ALWAYS NOT AROUND--either out of the office, in a meeting, or on a phone call. I left my number once, and that lady never called back. It's already been 1 week.

So, I received my financial aid pacakge, which is pretty lousy. At the very bottom, they listed a financial aid counselor. When I called, I found out that it's the same lady who's never to be found! I think I can safely presume that for the entire university--undergrad or med school, there's ONLY ONE financial aid advisor. :scared: Maybe that contributes to the lousiness of the financial aid package that most of us end up getting, huh... :thumbdown anywayz... I'm really pissed off with that. Sorry about the venting.

P.S. Is it possible to negotiate for financial aid, given that I finally get a hold of that lady..? Any advice is appreciated.

the lady who answers the phones is actually a temp. She has no real affliation with the SLU financial aid office, let alone SLU. The officer we're all supposed to contact used to be the SLU undergrad's financial aid coordinator and she's just filling in for the school of medicine until they find a replacement. It seems like she's frazzled and beseiged by people bothering left and right. I feel for her. But still I get a sense we're all getting shafted here financial aid wise. I pulled out of SLU for other reasons but the financial aid package was like icing to my decision cake.

The best I could find out is that the White Coat Ceremony is Sunday July 31st and Orientation is the week of August 1st. Then classes start the next week. Apparently (according to the SLU website) you're expected to have a dissecting kit and a lab coat for the first day b/c some students will be dissecting cadavers on that first day.

I will be joining everyone in the fall at SLU-- right now I'm looking for housing, just like a lot of people. I found that the school has a great housing website at http://medschool.slu.edu/housing/ where it gives past student opinions on several complexes and neighborhoods in the city. There's also a housing bulletin board through that link somewhere that has other students looking for roomates or giving info on specific houses.

my 0.02, as a recent SLU med grad-
don't live close to the med school, i.e. on Grand. learned this the hard way first year. in st. louis county, i would recommend affton/shrewsbury. easy commute on I-44, close to lots of shopping. as far as the city, i would recommend Soulard. not as overpriced/crowded as the Central West End, and in my opinion a little safer. easy ten minute commute to school on city streets. TONS of nightlife- bars on every block. Enjoy it while you can during first and second year. If you're looking for a more laid back area of the city, St. Louis Hills is nice.

The information on orientation will be sent out sometime in the next week or so (fingers crossed). White Coat will be Sunday June 31st and orientation starts August 1. The first year, excuse me, second year, class is busy planning a whole bunch of fun things all that week - including plenty of picnics (=free food), a Cards game, golfing, a pub crawl, the Muny, and much more. Plus you have the ever exciting fun filled day of CPR training :)

As far as anatomy goes... yes some will dissect the first day of class. You will likely need scrubs or grungy clothing, a dissection kit, and a Netters. Most of which are probably pretty easy to acquire during orientation.... dissection kits are resold at the book fair and Netters are given out with memberships to AMSA ,or juicy dirty Netters can also be bought at the book fair, and I believe that AMA gave out scrubs with membership.

one thing i didnt know though. ppl there said that one should not park at the meters near and around the buildings coz cars are often broken into even during day time. the parking garage is relatively safe however n we folks are gona be getting permits for it during orientation week.

Is there anyone else out there who hopes to be accepted to another school besides SLU? I am on waiting lists at 3 other places and I am 100% certain I would choose 2 of them over SLU. However, I think that movement on waitlists is pretty infrequent at this point and I am therefore planning on making the move to Saint Louis within the next two weeks. The next 4 years at SLU will be an interesting adventure for me because the only time I've ever been to Saint Louis, or Missouri for that matter, was when I visited the school for the interview. Would anyone like to comment on what they think might be unique about medical school at SLU or life in general in Saint Louis? Did anyone turn down other schools to go to SLU? If so, why?

Hey man, I too am hoping (kinda) for an acceptance from one of my waitlist schools(UC's and Loma Linda), but I don't think it will happen. I did choose SLU over a couple of other schools (MCW, Creighton, and UHSUS?) and did so for a lot of reasons. I really like SLU though, don't get me wrong, I am pumped to be there and think Saint Louis is a fun city. All the students seems cool and chill (especially compared to the "other" school in the STL.) I am from California, so like you, the only time I have been to St. Louis is during the interview. I have always heard good things from doctors about SLU and think you don't have to worry about the school's name when it comes to residency placement.

hi there~

glad to see new posts from my future classmates. ;) originally i was waiting for cincy; however, there's very little movement up till now. interestingly, my family doctor actually rated SLU above cincy. i'm definitely happy about that.

i started looking for housing at st. louis 2 weeks ago, and now i'm holding a 1 bdrm unit at hampton gardens. because i had a regional interview at SF, i haven't had the chance to visit st. louis. i'll be flying there to check out the school, my future apartment and take care of other miscellaneous thing. hopefully i will be ready for the coming school year soon. :o i look forward to meeting all of you soon!~

Did anyone turn down other schools to go to SLU? If so, why?

I turned down BU for SLU. The biggest reason for me was that the students at SLU seemed to be enjoying their medical education a heck of a lot more than students at BU. I was also really impressed with the respect that faculty and staff at SLU have for their medical students.

Hey fellow SLU-ers: When are people getting into town? I was thinking of having some SDNers over for dinner Monday or Tuesday the week before orientation if people aren't too overwhelmed? I know that's still a bit away, but if people think they might be interested, PM me so I know if I should plan. :)

Hey guys and gals, I am waiting on my state school, but at this point, I should start looking for apts in St louis. Has any of you start going down to st louis and actually visited those apts that are on their website? I might plan a trip next week to go down there and check out the apts. Good luck to those that are still waiting. :luck:

Hi dm~

Thanks for the warm offer! I'm still not quite sure about when I'll be moving to St. Louis, so I might not get there in time for the dinner. :( But I definitely look forward to the social events during the orientation week. Do you mind letting me know which events you've picked? I'm still in the process of figuring out what to check.

Would anyone like to comment on what they think might be unique about medical school at SLU or life in general in Saint Louis? Did anyone turn down other schools to go to SLU? If so, why?

Hi there,

By this point you've probably already made your decision about SLU, but I figure I'll reply anyway. I was seriously considering going to SLU but ended up going with another option. I've lived in St. Louis for a while, though, and I have to say that it's a really fun city.

Perks: Midwestern people are so friendly. Your social life = drinking. Down-to-earth classmates. Good residency placements. Inner city hospital, so you'll see a variety of ailments...including gunshot wounds....

Drawbacks: Your social life = drinking. As a general rule, midwesterners will neverever move...so unless you want to stay in STL forever, forget dating one. Med campus is separated from the undergrad campus. $$Tuition$$

Anyway, I doubt you'd regret choosing SLU. STL is a great place to live for a few years!

Best of luck!

Ahh!~ I can't drink. I'd fall asleep right after. Does that mean I'd have no social life? :(

Hey there,

I'm moving out of my apartment in the Villages of Wyncrest (www.villagesofwyncrest.com) on August 1, and I'm wondering if anyone wants to sublet. I'll have the month of August and September left on my lease, but the managers are really cool and would definitely let you keep renting longer than that. My apartment's in a great, *safe* neighborhood that's only a couple mins from The Loop and about 10 mins to SLU. There's also free parking out the wazoo in the subdivision. Another perk is that the maintenance is 24/7. My specific apartment is 550 sq.feet, it has a ton of closet space, and it's got central air (of course). It's also directly in front of the laundry room/work-out facility, and - even better - it's super close to the pool. (Seriously, the pool here is amazing. It's water temp is perfect, there are tons of plants and pretty flowers everywhere, and there are lots of sunbathing chairs). Anyway, let me know if you're interested! I pay $550/month, but I'm only asking $400/month to sublet during August and September. In addition, gas/electric should run about $40/month, and I can leave the cable internet on for you for $30/month if you'd like.

Gimme an e-mail if you'd like to check it out! There are tons of Billikens here, as well as Wash U and UMSL students, so you'd be in good company.

Take care,

Emily

I'm excited to meet y'all in the STL. 314's....

Yeah, seriously go for the Sally (Salvation Army). There are tons of 'em around here, and you'll only have the furniture for 4 years. Otherwise I'd just buy used furniture off of the 4th years. (I did get a pretty sweet, cheap desk at Office Max, tho.)

Also, you might want to check out this place called Weekends Only.

Its a furniture outlet that is only open on Fri, Sat, and Sun but they usually have wicked deals on good furniture

I always overdress...I am sure I'll wear a suit, but ditch the jacket once I get there if I'm the only person wearing one.

It seems like it'll be too hot for a jacket. Plus you really can't wear a jacket under your white coat. I think I'll just go with a dress shirt and tie.

dress shirt and tie will do; no coat necessary as you will be wearing your white coat. It is a pretty nice ceremony held in the cathedral.

For those of you on the waitlist, don't lose hope just yet. I heard a couple of people in my class got in the Saturday or Sunday before orientation. That being said, for those of you coming here, consider this. I am from Cali, and I love it here, it lacks pretty much all that's great about Cali, but it has many other things that Cali doesn't - like cheap beer and a better bar scene in general (I said bar not club) I truly believe that students at other medical schools don't have as much fun as we do.
