I have a difficult situation in that my husband is applying to med school while I'm applying for the ophth match. I've matched at a school where he has only recently (mid-Jan) received an interview. He has been accepted at his top choice (4 hrs away from where I'll be) and offered a significant scholarship (he'd pay less than in-state tuition where I'll be).

My question is if anybody has any thoughts/experiences with asking the chair where I matched to make a phone call to the med school admissions. Would this help in getting him accepted? and if so, would it help in getting him a scholarship? Would they be less likely to give him a scholarship upon knowing that he'll need less "persuasion" since I'll be there? If no scholarship, could they grant him in-state tuition? Please, if you've heard of anything like this happening, let me know. I hate to ask my chairman first thing after being matched and I don't know how to handle this.
Thanks.

I think that your best approach is an open approach. The most that you can do is ask your program to help in any way that they can. If your husband is a good applicant then a slight push from a department might help because no real justification for admission would need to be done. Most medical schools are looking for outstanding reasons to accept applicants. I would say that your situation definitely applies.
Most residencies want to make their residents feel at home and make their residents as happy as possible because happy residents work harder. It is definitely in their interest to have your husband there so that you will be around more often and be more focused on your residency and the work at hand.

Good luck!
