Hey.. Excited? That's just the beginning of it. I've wanted to go to UT-Houston for so long and after this long and drawn out process it's finally all over with. One of my friends from undergrad is going to UT-Houston as well, so I already see the beginning of a great class. See everyone there.

Getting my work on. The real world is a cold cruel place. But, on the bright side, I work near UT-H and am considering going over there later in the week or next week to gather some additional info. What info? Not really sure. But info nonetheless.

Part of me saw all the excitement the UTSW people were creating and I feel like maybe that would have been a better choice. I need you guys to help excite me about the school!!!

Unfortunately I'm at work today as well. UT-Houston was definately my top choice. It was a toss up for a while between Houston and San Antonio, but in the end I realized that there was so much more to love in Houston. I'll check back on the forum later tonight after work. Congrats again to all of us. This is just one more step towards acheiving our dreams.

I picked UTSW first, but I live in Dallas and could have mooched off of my parents better there.

We are going to have a rockin' time in Houston. I can't wait to get an apartment picked out and all. This is going to be truly fantastic. The medical district in Houston is unique and huge and we are all going to find our niche there. They have every specialty you could think of and many you may not even know about even if you work in the medical field already.

Here's to taking the "wham bam tram" to school!

That's no lie Emily. Classes over the internet, awesome student body, the Texas Medical Center, being close to friends and family... perfect. I can't wait to meet everyone. We should have a meet up for all of us to celebrate and get ready for 4 great years together. I'm not from Houston so I'm not sure on any good places.

Ylime

of course it was, but 2 long yrs ago ;) but most importantly I would still rank it #1 if I had it to do all over again knowing what I know now :)

 congrats everyone and welcome to a great school!!!!!!

I think there might be a SDN celebration tonight somewhere near the Village for all SDNers so look in the Texas thread because I think details will be poster there later! :D

No work today! I knew a couple weeks ago that I would need this day off - either to start making plans or to formulate a convincing reason as to why I didn't match (they lost my application?).

I'm positively elated I matched with my number 1. My selling points for UT-Houston: TMC, nice area surrounding school, not an overly competetive student body, TMC, attractive hospitals, good amount of PBL, thorough curriculum, streaming videos, new cadaver room and the TMC.

Can't wait til I get my acceptance letter. Congratulations everyone!!!!!!!!! Y'all have definitely earned it.

Hey jdovez, yeah we're excited...just hung over! Last night was a long night, but I'm glad I matched to UT-Houston. It was #1 for me as well. Just think...in 4 years we are going to be M.D.'s! :)

UT-Houston, C/O 2009, BOOM SHOCKALOCKA! #1 choice and in six months I will no longer be relegated to a life of checking salt and pepper levels and pretending to know a thing about wine.

So what's up classmates? Here's to five years of living in a cubicle in the LRC! KICK ASS

Hey guys! I also matched at UT-Houston. It was my third choice but I am still very excited about it. I was so worried that I wouldn't match, LOL. A little about me, I go to Univ. of Houston (GO COOGS!) but my state of legal residence is Nevada, so I'll probably be the only out-of-stater in the class. Anyways, you guys seem like a great group and I'm very happy to be a part of it! :) :)

don't worry, I'll remove all names :p

Hey there,

I am thinking about staying where I live currently for first year and wanted the opinion of a current student. I am about a 30 minute drive from the med center (non rush hour) and was wondering if commuting is a logistical possibility (ie wasting that much time a day just getting home). I hear MS1 is pretty rigorous, so I was wondering on your input. Also, where do the UT-H students that commute park and how much is it a month. Right now I do smithlands and its like 56 a month. Thanks a lot!

Most single/non-married students live pretty close to school the first 2 yrs. After that they spread out a bit more after to getting to know the area better. Married (esp w/kids) tend to live in Pearland because of good cost of living (bigger houses for the $) and good public schools.

I think it is good to live nearby (get a roomie if you're worried about $$) ESPECIALLY first year since this is when you are getting to know your class and learning how to deal with the stress of med school. No one wants to drive 30 min to 'hang out' and there will be a ton of actitivies going on near school. You'll get plastered with emails about outings/parties/dance lessons/athletic events/etc the first few weeks of school. Just remember giving up an 1hr+ of your day will be alot unless driving calms you and counts towards your veg time. People who it would be a bad idea to live with are parents and those who party any time they can because they just won't get your lifestyle.

Tons of people live in condoland or somewhere along the metro line. If you drive in you will continue to park in an external parking lot like you already do and ride either the metro (for free, part of your parking fee) or one of the free TMC shuttles. I personally live in an apt complex right by the free Blue shuttle and that is how I get to school. Look on the TMC and Metro site for details.

Something else I REALLY REALLY REALLY wish I had done was buy a condo! You can get a 1bdrm and live alone or 2+bdrm and get roommates. I hate throwing away my rent every month and many areas around here would be a great investment and you'd probably make money instead of just breaking even (or losing money on rent.)

I don't know about the new housing but I think the old housing had 1br for about $550/600 per month and is right by the athletic center (which rocks by the way)

I know there will be new housing and it looks cool from what is built so far. Either way university housing goes fast because it is cheap and is on our our free shuttle line. I'm guessing you should contact student affairs.

Another thing I forgot to mention, as a UTH student there is another free shuttle for you and many drive and park by one of its stops for free and ride that in to school.

Hey guys,
Congrats on UT-Houston. I'm not going there for med school, but I currently attend grad school here. Anyhow, here is the scoop on university housing.
http://ae.uth.tmc.edu/housing/index.html
Click on 1885 El Paseo.

If you're interested in housing you need to complete an application ($50) fee and put $200 for deposit. The sooner you do this, the better. The new waiting list started the 12th of January, and if you wait too long you won't get an apt.

Hey LuLu....thanks for the link. I was just wondering, if I wanted to rent one of these apartments if it would be a problem if I wanted someone to live with me (ie a 1br with my gf). Thanks. I know at a lot of out of state schools they cram multiple med schools into 1 apartment (ie NYC)

No it's not a problem. You just need to make sure that one person is connected with an academic institution in the med center(Baylor, UT-H, etc.)

The second look weekend is probably a good time to check out places. I've learned from experience not to get a place without looking at it first. I'll probably move there in mid-July.

I'm in for the UT-Houston. I'm still waiting on Baylor and I'm on the waitlist for UTSW but i don't see that working out. Most likely I will be heading to Houston. I'm really anxious about getting the acceptance letter. I want to hear some official news.

I think it might be a good idea for those of us on www.thefacebook.com to chat with each other so we can get to know each other better. I'm on there right now, feel free to look me up... Stephen Metting at UT Austin.

Seabass, I have a question for you. Do you know who I can contact at UTH about financial aid? I have a question and when I called the number from the website yesterday, the lady who answered didn't have any idea what was going on and she wasn't exactly helpful.

Thanks!

I may be able to answer your question, but probably not. :(

Your suggestion about real estate is something that I have been pondering for a while. Could you give me some suggestions on where good areas (safe neighborhood, relatively close to TMC, relatively non-money gouging) are? I would really appreciate your comments! Thanks.

I would suggest looking into getting a real estate agent or spending a day driving around getting a feel for the area. It really helped me to just drive around for a couple hours and you have to figure out how to get around at some point anyways. ;)

There is the area south of the TMC called CondoLand, kinda btwn Reliant Stadium and the TMC. Lots of condos but lets face it, just lots of condos. People are also really starting to buy condos in Midtown and the Museum District. Some areas have a couple blocks which are nice, then it goes ghetto, then nice again. Maybe more likely to get a bigger return on your investment and more in a neighborhood.

Hey Trish... Congrats on UTH!

I think having a get together would get a great idea. If we do it we should plan at least a couple weeks in advance because I know a couple of us would have to ask off of work and plan on driving to Houston. Anyone have suggestions on a date and place??? Did anyone get their packet from UTH in the mail today? I didn't.

I think planning a day is a great idea. I live in Houston so most any weekend is good for me. I'll only be gone feb 18th-20th so if we could avoid that weekend it would be best for me. If anyone is interested in attending and have a weekend preference please post so we can accomodate as many people as possible. Can't wait to meet you all. and Congrats again :)

I got my letter today as well, but I'm in Houston so it should definently get here faster. It was postmarked feb 1st. In the packet you will get in the mail it says that they have to have written confirmation that you accept their offer by Feb. 15. The packet contains a letter that you sign saying that you accept which you send back with an enclosed envelope.

I wish I could go ahead and move to Houston in the next few months but I've got to keep working to save up a little more money before then. I think I will look for an apartment in June hopefully.

OK, I don't know the least bit about real estate, but it seems to me that in order to get a condo you have to have a decent down payment. Is this not correct? Also, does it not cost money to maintain and in taxes and the like on top of the mortgage? Does anyone know the average (or range) of lower to mid ranged condos in the med center area? I haven't really considered this because although I don't like pissing away my money on rent, I figured it would be too $$ of a proposition to purchase something. Any thoughts?

There are ways of getting around having a down payment. I know someone who bought a condo in Las Vegas without one. I can ask him about it next time I talk to him if anyone is interested. And yes, you do have to pay taxes (which I heard are steep in Harris County) on top of a mortgage and association fees. However, I've heard of several med students doing this so it can't be that bad. You could probably take a roomate to help with the expenses. One benefit to buying is that you'll build up equity and not be throwing away money as you mentioned.

You usually do need a down payment to purchase a home, but the amount of the down payment really depends on how much the house costs. I've been looking at them on the internet; I did a google search. On the remax website, they gave you an estimate of the monthly payments. Some of the condos I found were really reasonable...though I'm not quite sure how close some of them are to the TMC. A lot of them that I saw the monthly fee includes your utilities, so it might not be as bad as you think.

Basically, for a $100,000 piece of property, you need a downpayment around $5,000 (about 5% of property value). However, a larger downpayment is a much better idea, as it will save you a substantial amount of money over time in the way of finance charges (smaller principal=less interest accrued) and will reduce your monthly payments. Additionally, since borrowing rates are rising and are likely to continue rising courtesy of Alan Greenspan, those finance charges become even more substantial and thus a larger downpayment is more beneficial now than it would have been 5 years ago. This is the best investment you could make here! I've seen property values double in the six years that i've been in the area. If you are looking for a 1/1 in condoland, I'm sure you can find one anywhere from 80K to 140K. I've seen small 2/1.5 or 2/2 range from 100K on up.

First off, let me congratulate all of you on your acceptance into UT. Our school is an awesome place, and you will all be given the opportunity to become great physicians.

While I will not be here by the time you all arrive, I offer my advice to any and all of you with questions about anything to do with the coming years (in four years, you'll find that you have a lot of free time during your senior year, especially when residency interviews are finished). I'll try and address the questions I've seen so far:

Re: Hep B- if you've finished the entire series of vaccinations (3), just provide records of it and you'll be fine. If you don't know where those records are, ask someone at the administrative office at your undergrad institution, as they should have them. Either that, or go where you had the vaccination placed. PeterGriffin is correct in that if you don't have the series finished by time you get here, it's ok, but try to get it started.

Re: housing on rail- There are quite a few apartment complexes on the rail line. The Greenbriar, Lanesborough and Archstone Medical are along the line in condoland. There are other apartment complexes in mid-town along the rail as well. There is also a free school shuttle that picks up on El Paseo. It is close to UT housing and many other apartment complexes in condoland. Also, many people (such as myself) park their cars on El Paseo and take the shuttle into the Medical Center (cheaper than paying for parking).

Re: scholarships- They are a bit of both. Most are need based, but there are some that are merit based, and some you get and you don't know why. Financial aid is good at taking care of you when it comes to things like this.

I just spent some time on the financial aid website. It's not very helpful. If they're going to use family income for these scholarships, it won't be worth me filling it out even though I'll be paying for this degree myself. I guess I'll just do it anyway because the worst they can do it tell me no. I think the major disadvantage of the Texas system is that we can't compare financial aid and scholarships from one school to another, even though I really think this it is very important criteria. There's a rumor going around that they're switching to a more rolling style of admissions. Anyone know anything about it?

You do not have to use family income if you don't want. Certain scholarships/grants require this information, but as far as the amount of money you can receive, it doesn't have to include family income (unless you are married...then I'm really not sure about income information).
As far as rolling admissions, I haven't heard anything about it, but it doesn't mean it isn't true.

Hey Brain,
I ran into alot of the same questions last year. Everyone that applies for financial aid will get packaged for the same amount $30,218. Don't get too excited as this includes your tuition. If you get a scholarship ( I did and I still dont have a clue why I did  ) they will not increase your aid or budget as they call it but will only reduce your loan amount. I have been really amazed how much they take care of you once your in. Just make sure and get your FASFA in and stuff like that.

BTW there is a question on your FASFA that classifies you as a independant stuident (because your seeking a graduate / doctorate degree) so there is no need to put info about your parents any longer.

so is anybody trying for that scholarship where you have to write an essay and get a letter of rec. Honestly, I'm sick and tired of writing essay's and getting letters, haha. But I guess its worth a shot, huh?

Still deliberating on that one. I got recs from those that would provide good info for this award and would not want to get ANOTHER letter from the same person, so I'm not sure. Also, I am pretty tired of writing as well. Oh, well, that said I guess its worth a shot.

Hey Brain,
I ran into alot of the same questions last year. Everyone that applies for financial aid will get packaged for the same amount $30,218. Don't get too excited as this includes your tuition. If you get a scholarship ( I did and I still dont have a clue why I did  ) they will not increase your aid or budget as they call it but will only reduce your loan amount. Thanks for the info Adam. Unfortunately, some schools still require parental information (though for what reason I am not sure considering we are independent) so I guess all the schools will get it if you fill it into the FAFSA. I wonder if it would count against you if it was included. Oh well, I hope UT-H is as good at taking care of us as you say.

Does anyone have any idea when they send out aid packages??

Thanks for the info Adam.

I'm definately not putting my parents' info on the FAFSA. I was wondering about that extra paper work we got in our acceptance packet from the financial aid office. This does ask for parental info and like jdovez I was wondering if this can count against us.

I'm also debating whether to write the essay. I've been so lazy since Feb 1st. I'm also wondering who should write the letter because I've had to cut out a lot of my activities so I could get my thesis data collected and cleaned. I did a ton of stuff for the state health department and a county health department this past summer. Maybe I could ask someone from there to do it, but I haven't seen them since August.

Wow! You're getting started early. It's hard to believe we still have about 6 months until August.

I'm stuck in an apartment lease in GA that I'm not sure I can get out of. I may end of just staying here for at least part of the summer because I have a decent paying part time job that doesn't require too hours. I'm thinking about moving to Houston in the middle of July and just relaxing until school starts.

My wife and I are in GA right now but planning on visiting Houston to look at apartments etc over spring break. I was wondering if any of yall knew how likely it would be to find a decent place near medical center that we'd be able to start rent on in may. This may seem like a stupid question, but I just wanted to get a feel for how available/unavailable things are in that area.

I will start looking for apartments in the area in March, with the hope of moving in during June. Looking up places online pretty much confirmed the high cost of living all the other Texas medical schools said was a drawback to Houston, but I can definately live with such a minor inconvenience.

Last year they had a picnic type event for us near the rec center. They had a couple of kegs, margarita machines, mexican food, vollyball if I remember correctly. Then we went out to the bar that night and we got free drinks for a couple of hours. Saturday we all went to Astroworld. It was pretty fun and I got to meet a bunch of people. Several people found roommates that weekend too. We have a class meeting this Friday and should have almost everything settled by then so I'll let everyone know

I am, as I will be in Houston for at least another 5 years (MD/MPH) which means that I am now hunting for a better paying job in order to save up some scrilla for a downpayment. Here's what I'm thinking:

Pros:
-Don't end up wasting four years of rent money
-Build equity and your credit
-Have your own place

Cons:
-the initial expense is much higher than that of an apartment
-Responsible for all maintenance
-It's an investment, so there is risk that the price may fall or that you may incur serious maintenance costs, which could kill your return
-You have to spend the time and money to buy it and eventually sell it
-If you get a 2-bedroom, finding a roommate could be tough
-UT-H housing is really convenient, affordable and you'll be surrounded by students and not post-menopausal women bitching that your studying is making too much noise

Bottom line, my credit sucks, the 'rents are interested in buying real estate in the loop and are willing to invest with me (which will lower my monthly payment), I have time to find a place, my bro works in Houston and would be willing to live with me (whether I am willing to live with him remains to be determined) and I hate the idea of wasting my money on an apartment over the course of five years when I could be investing it instead. That's about as much incoherent thought as I can muster on the topic for now. I'd be interested to hear what other people are thinking about this. Late

Don't buy Netter yet. If you wait until school starts, you can get one when you join AMSA. If you really can't wait until then and you want to buy an anatomy atlas, I'd suggest Rohen. It's pictures of amazing dissections of actual cadavers, not just drawings like Netter. It's great for studying for practical exams because, unfortunately, things don't usually look like they do in Netter.

I'll just call around until I find an apartment locator that I'm more comfortable with. Worse comes to worse, I have a few places in my mind that I found on rent.com & apartments.com so I'll take a look at those. I have several requirements (cats, w&D in unit, near rail/shuttle) so that should narrow it down. And my Mom is coming with me (hahaha she's paying for the hotel - i love you mommy!)

Yeah, I called to make sure that they got my letter because I sent it from Connecticut where I am stationed with the Navy. I wanted to make sure it got there on time. And I don't really totally trust the postal service. Plus, on the topic of 5:55 am, they probably have a central mail room for the HSC, and that is where the post office notes that the letter was received. I wanted to make sure the letter wasn't lost between the mail room and the admissions office. Now that is paranoid.

Instead of us all calling separately to confirm that they received our letter, they can just cut and paste the list of those they have heard from right here on this page.

Seriously though, I am going to call today or Monday.

It would really suck to lose your admission because either the USPS or someone getting the mail at 5:55 am lost it.

Were we instructed to do this by the school? Because if not, I am not certain this is for medical students (it may be intended for grad students). Just let me know.

yeah, I hadn't heard anything about it either. I don't even have all of my financial aid stuff in yet  Is this for sure?

I think it is required of all entering students. If you go to the financial aid website it says that all are required to do it. It isn't hard, just time consuming. You have to answer questions that the answers to are right above....

It looks like it MIGHT be required of all students, but until the medical school states that we must do it, I think you are giving yourself a little extra work prematurely (just my opinion). Additionally, on the financial aid website there is a link for "Medical Students", but not for members of any other branch of the school (indicating the possibility that our financial aid is handled separately)......

OK just looked through the site some more and it appears there is a place on the institutional aid form to check medical student, but again, until they tell us the hows/whys I for one am going to wait. Maybe I'm just a procrastinator.

Hmm....Im sleepy, naptime.

Very good advice. I know you are all really excited to get started, but don't worry about it too much. The school will let you know about everything you need to do. The only thing that I can advise you to do early is get your FAFSA complete.

Today I received a letter from UTSA that stated they needed my W2's so that they may offer me a financial aid package. I find it very generous of them to assist in paying for my UT-Houston tuition. Three cheers for UTSA.

I must confess that I called yesterday to verify that they received my letter of intent. They were really nice about it if anyone else feels the urge to call on Monday. I was also told that we'll be getting a packet with more information at the end of the month.

I called too, the only thing is mine DID get lost in between the mailroom and the admissions office, so I faxed them a copy.

I'm going apartment searching next weekend and I thought y'all living in Houston might be able to provide some advice. Are there any areas/streets/ghettos that I should steer clear of? I was warned to stay away from the Astrodome. Do the Astros still play there?

Also, what do you think of the area north of the TMC (museum district)? Seems more expensive, but is it worth it?

P.S. I am a single, paranoid female.

Does anybody know how many people applied to UTH last year (or this year), or what the % acceptance rate is? Just curious. (Really, though, I want a bragging data point to give my mom).

No, the astros do not play in the astrodome- it was scheduled for demolition but now I think they are going to develop the inside and such. The texans play at reliant stadium which is ptty much right next door tot he astrodome. The astros play at minute maid park- both of these stadiums are brand new and have retractable roofs.

That particular area of Houston is hit and miss. There are MANY nice areas in that area but they will quickly fade into ghettos very soon. The third ward is notorious in that area. The museum district is very nice- a little more pricey than other places. I'm originally from Houston and I think my dad will be looking at 2 bedroom condos along the rail line or something convenient. Your best bet is to just drive out there and see what you like!

I've lived in South Hampton or the Museum District my entire 4 years here. It is a little bit more expensive, but it is nice to live in a non-cookie cutter apartment or duplex with wood floors and a neighborhood where you can walk at night to a bar or restaurant without the fear of being run over. If you can afford it (or get a roommate), I would suggest it; not living in an apartment is very nice. That being said, condoland (by the astrodome) does have some nice, safe apartment/condo complexes. The better ones are the Greenbriar and the Lanesborough (although I hear the management at the Greenbriar is difficult at times). Many med students live in Archstone Medical and are happy there, but I remember once being there visiting a friend during my first year when a man shoot himself in the parking lot with a 12 gauge (it was an interesting site to see). I would also look in midtown, as there are nice places there that are on the rail line. If I had to stay here another 4 years, that would be my second pick (behind where I am now).
Good luck, and if you need any more help, let me know.

I just talked to the admissions office and the Welcome Weekend ("Second Look" type event) will be on Saturday and Sunday, April 9th and 10th. On Sat, 12:30 to 4:30 at the Rec Center with food, pool, basketball, partying, hopefully beer, etc. On Sat night, there will be a social, didn't get the time or location of this. Sunday will be a housing open-house for the student housing (I guess the one that is run/owned by UTHSC, and maybe some houses owned by students, but she wasn't sure about that. I think the whole welcome weekend is run by first year students, and the retreat in August is run by second year students.

I don't know if I will be able to make it to the W/W since I am in Connecticut, but I hope everybody else is going!

It's the same class, it is just that in August, you will be the first year class.

One of my friends that matched at A&M was telling me how they've got this incoming class list serve going...I was wondering if we had one that I just didn't know about. It seems like a pretty good idea?

Actually... who cares as long as we've got the UT-Houston SDN page :D
