Hey To any current Texas Tech Med students there....Do you guys know a 1st or 2nd year student named Omar Manalpaz - I think??? Thanks! I know him. I'll let him know. You won't regret coming here, I promise. Hey wait, Van, I am Shane. I think you are the guy I interviewed with before. We talked at nauseum during lunch when you came here. You were applying to the MD MBA program right? If so, congrats man. I was hoping to see what the word was from you but had no way of getting in contact with you. Wake Forest is a good school too. I had a buddy go there. Congrats on getting in,....to several schools. Well good luck making up your mind. Let me know what your final decision is. Later amy2003uva 02-02-2005, 05:40 PM Howdy! :D Congratulations soon-to-be Red Raiders! How great did it feel to check the match and realize that you had gotten into med school?! I know that everyone worked very hard to get this far and I just wanted to let you guys know how psyched I am to meet you all. How about some quick introductions? Undergrad institution/age/location/other random, fun facts? I am officially new to the SDN, though I have perused the interview feedback section before. My name is Amy, and I went to the University of Virginia for undergrad. I moved to Lubbock last June, I am 23, and I work as a paramedic for Lubbock EMS! My boyfriend Robert also got into Texas Tech Med, so he and I will both meet you all at orientation and all that jazz. Anyway, hope to hear from you all soon. Wreck 'em Tech! :D Amy Lily22 02-02-2005, 10:25 PM Great idea, Amy. I am a student at Tech now, 21, finishing in May. Tech is a great school, and I really like Lubbock as well. I am so excited about meeting all of you! I would be glad to answer any questions about Lubbock as well. Congratulations again! :D amy2003uva 02-03-2005, 12:26 AM hey ringworm & thackl - any advice for our summer-before-med-school? besides relaxing and enjoying the last of our freedom ( ), is there anything you wish you'd done? also, when do we learn about financial aid, & when do classes start? so many questions, i know. thanks so much for the help! :) Amy theringworm 02-03-2005, 01:04 PM hey ringworm & thackl - any advice for our summer-before-med-school? besides relaxing and enjoying the last of our freedom ( ), is there anything you wish you'd done? also, when do we learn about financial aid, & when do classes start? so many questions, i know. thanks so much for the help! :) Amy Do exactly what you said, enjoy it. I DO NOT recommend trying to get ahead by starting to study this spring or summer. This is literally the last free summer you'll have for ~10 yrs or more. You do have a summer b/w 1st and 2nd year but most people fill that up with preceptorships or research. So, go on that vacation you have always wanted to go on. Europe, S. America, Tahiti, etc.etc. Don't waste the time you'll regret it. I have no idea when you findout about financial aid. You should be starting your FAFSA app already. I think it was late May when I foundout how much I was getting in financial aid. When you do findout how much they allot you don't freak out. If you need more it's available, and very easy to access. I believe classes start Aug 15th though don't hold me to it. You'll have to be here about 7 days prior to that though for orientation. So as a general assumption plan on being here the first week of Aug. Also, sometime in late March or early April, we'll have a "Spring Training" for all of you and that's when you findout a lot more info about school and get to meet everyone. I highly recommend coming to this. Details to come, just keep checking your mailboxes. So just kick back relax and make this the best spring/summer you've ever had. (man that sounds cheezy) Hope this helps. OrthoFixation 02-03-2005, 09:38 PM Does anyone know how Tech deals with the waitlist? Is it ranked or are candidates reviewed upon openings? Thanks and congrat's to all you new Raiders  I'm not sure and they are pretty tight-lipped about it. I do know that location (ie: living in Lubbock) becomes an issue as things get real close. We had a girl get into our class on the last day of orientation when a budy of mine dropped out to finish some post-doc work. Talk about cutting it close. Hope to see you all at the spring training this April. castaway 02-04-2005, 01:54 AM Congratulations, and welcome to TT Medical School. I am in my 3rd year, and just want to emphasize that you'll get a great education at Tech. Enjoy the summer, because you will be taking on a lot starting this fall. Again, congrats and welcome to the family. amy2003uva 02-04-2005, 06:26 AM Hey current Tech SOM'ers - How many people in your class(es) work/have worked while in med school? I am currently a paramedic with Lubbock EMS, and I would love to be able to stay on part-time/on-call. Unfortunately I am worried about the volume of work and my ability to juggle work and school. I love working 911 and would miss it if I had to completely resign, so I was hoping to work a few shifts here and there. What do you think - am I totally insane or is this even somewhat feasible? Thanks for the advice. Amy lost 02-04-2005, 08:09 AM Congrats to everyone who matched at Tech! Amy There's a guy in my class (we are first years) who is a EMT at a small town just outside of Lubbock. He does a 7pm-7am shift and is doing fine in school. I think the key for him is that the town he is in doesn't avg. many calls at all. So he is basically getting paid to sleep or study. Lubbock may be a dif. story due to the call load. Try it out, and if doesn't work then quit. TX_Longhorn 02-04-2005, 12:47 PM Congrats to everyone who matched at Tech! I have a question regarding their curriculum. Is it organ based and do they have any PBL integrated into the classes? From what i understand, the teaching method is fairly classical at tech although they said they were reformingit a little. I want to know more about this also. They dont have PBL, but we can form our stugy groups once we start school i guess  amy2003uva 02-04-2005, 02:43 PM Ortho - Here's a posting from the TTUHSC SOM website, concerning the alternate list: A Message for the 2005 Texas Tech Alternates 02/02/05 Those interviewees that have been assigned an alternate status by the Office of Admissions need to know about how the alternate list works. The list is ordered alphabetically. The ranking system used to formulate the original match list is no longer used. When someone is selected from the list, cognitive and interview scores are considered as starting points. Next, many other factors are examined which include the extensive review of letters of evaluation and interviewer comments. Although offers can be made at any time, the alternate list typically doesn't open up until March. Good luck!!! :D Espion 02-04-2005, 06:09 PM First and Second year teaching is still fairy traditional. Last year (in my 2nd year) they started a new class called "Integration and Analysis". This is a class where two weeks worth (I think it is every week now) of pharm, path, and whatever-else have you are integrated into case studies. In retrospect, I was actually very happy that Tech is not organ systems based. Basically, once you go over cardiac physiology during the "heart" block, you never see it again. But with Tech, you go over it in phys, then pharm, then path...get it? Repetition is key. It gets annoying sometimes, and other times, you'll be glad the light bulb went off. Honestly I don't know anything about the current first years because I'm not in Lubbock any more, but hopefully (and most likely) they'll be great and help you guys out. As for working, that is your own perogative. Personally, I couldn't have done it. Enjoy your summer, don't work too hard. theringworm 02-04-2005, 07:36 PM First and Second year teaching is still fairy traditional. Actually, you future 1st years will be experiencing the new curriculum that is being implemented here at Tech. Yes they are going to systems based program. How is that going to change from the way it is now, nobody knows. We are speculating that it will be a lot like UTMBs curriculum, atleast that's what we have heard. I.e. you'll take anatomy for 6 straight weeks, and then start your systems. Remember, this is just speculation. I don't think anyone will know until yall show up for the first day of class. thackl 02-06-2005, 09:54 PM Actually, you future 1st years will be experiencing the new curriculum that is being implemented here at Tech. You will be asked to write a brief paragraph stating your reasons for chosing your top choice. About 50% will go to El Paso, 20% to Amarillo and 30% to Lubbock (these are rough estimates). So this should tell you that you need good reasons to stay in Lubbock or Amarillo. Most of the Lubbock spots get filled with MD/MBA, and MD/PHD students. Whatever is left generally goes to people who are married or have families or whom are established in Lubbock. Basically, if you don't have a good reason to stay in Lubbock you probably won't. However, don't let this distract you from trying. Amarillo is great for people who think they may be interested in surgery, but don't let that be your deciding factor. El Paso is great for overwhelming exsposure to OB and border health. You have plenty of time to think about. Enjoy your time off and worry about this stuff as it comes to you. Tech is great about sending out info to let you know what is going on. Damn, the curriculum board has got everyone's panties in a wad (not you, but this is millionth rumor I've seen/heard! heh) From what I remember, their template was supposed to be New Mexico's curriculum. In regards to the changes, they are thinking about doing away with the the 3rd and 4th yrs rotating with multiple attendings/residents while on a service but instead have one attending/resident with that same student their entire rotation. In my opinion this is a terrible idea. Some attendings teach better than others and you don't always get along know do you? It's not set in stone but that's what has been proposed. It wouldn't take place for alteast a yr or two so you'll be okay. The next two yrs are going to be full of surprises I think. Espion 02-10-2005, 12:26 PM I did my undergrad in Rochester. Case of the bad internet writing. Sorry, yo. :) Espion 02-10-2005, 12:34 PM In regards to the changes, they are thinking about doing away with the the 3rd and 4th yrs rotating with multiple attendings/residents while on a service but instead have one attending/resident with that same student their entire rotation. It wouldn't take place for alteast a yr or two so you'll be okay. The next two yrs are going to be full of surprises I think. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I diagnose them ALL with Delusional Disorder. There is no way that could/would/should happen. It is not the resident's first priority to teach students. Their job is to take care of their patients and hopefully teach the students something useful in the meantime. Believe me, when the residents get overloaded with work, the last thing they'll think about is the welfare of the students when they are trying to keep patients alive. And yes, that is completely understandable. So far, I think the students that have the worst time during the clinical years (aside from the students with horrid interpersonal skills) are the ones that erroneously believe that the doctors exist to teach them everything they need to know. If you fail to have the motivation to read on your own, then you'll get screwed on the exams. And you have an excellent point. Not all residents/attendings are created equal in reference to their teaching ability, knowledge base, work load and efficiency. To deny a student varied points of view would be truly harmful. hjt 02-13-2005, 01:38 AM Hey everyone, I've also matched to Tech. Where are you in school now? I live in Lubbock now, and I'm totally psyched to start school in August. Espion was going to post something about El Paso, which would be great, because I don't know much about it. You can't go wrong, though - I'm familiar with UMC (the University Medical Center) here in Lubbock, and I've also visited the Amarillo campus, and I've been impressed with both. Are they a lot of student organisations? I'm just wondering as to what living in lubbock will be like.... I can only speak for my class, I'm a first year, and say that we are a very cohesive group. Everyone seems to get a long and are always willing to help each other out. From what I have heard the other 3 classes are just as cohesive. Remember though, it's what you and your classmates make of it. Just because one class is doesn't mean the next one will be. There are more than enough organizations to get involved with. If there's something you want that hasn't been started then you can always start your own club. Lubbock is a layed back town. Not fast paced at all. If you're into IM sports we always have several teams going. If the bar scene is you, then you'll have plenty of options for that as well. Make sure you come out for spring training so that you can experience most of this yourself. It will answer a lot of questions as well as introduce you to your future classmates and upper classmen. It's nice to know that there are other married med students coming to Lubbock this fall. I'm also married, and my husband plans on attending TTU for his undergrad (non traditional student). I plan on going to Lubbock this weekend to ck out some apartments, etc. Also, my husband has never been there and he is very curious to know what the town is like. We are both very excited!! I think this is going to be a great experience for all of us (regardless of the enourmous amount of work we'll have to do), and I'm really looking forward to it. ;) MedicoTre 02-16-2005, 09:18 AM When and where did everybody interview? Trying to find out if anyone else will be there this summer. I'm envious of all of you that actually will get a summer. I was looking over my planned course schedule for June '05 and MWF I have classes 10AM-7PM with no lunchbreak... *sigh* Anyways, HELLO ALL! amy2003uva 02-18-2005, 08:01 PM Hey guys! I found this info about the re-vamped curriculum interesting, so I thought i'd share it with you all. It looks like we may be going to a form of systems. I don't know exactly what the curriculum used to be like, but as MS1's we may be spending the first three months on anatomy, followed by two months of cell bio/histology. After that, the word is that we have 2 week blocks for each of the following: genetics, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, GI/nutrition, endocrine/reproduction, and immunology. Wrap it all up with a month + of microbio and infectious diseases. Throughout the whole year, starting with week 1, we're going to have "clinical experience/foundations of medical practice". Clinical experience starting week 1... if it's true, that is pretty cool. Anyway, this isn't official by any means, but I was psyched to hear about a rough outline. To current students - how similar/dissimilar does this sound to your 1st year experience? civic4982 02-19-2005, 09:51 AM I know him. Later Wait I think that was me, Vinh :) . I'm working in CA and doing MD/MBA. I met so many ppl I forgot all the names by now. O wait Shane, I think that was you that I met. You went to UNT right? I remember you telling me about it since I was a 2nd time interviewer there at Tech and you'd mentioned you got ni your 2nd time too. Alos, does anyone know med students looking for a subleaser? I know summer subleases can be a little bit cheaper since when I subleased back in austin we usually did it for about 70% of the usual rent cost. Tht way I saved the 70% and didn't have to pay the utilities instead of eating the costs all summer long. If you guys know anyone looking for someone to sublease give them my e-mail, vqnguyen@gmail.com . Thanks. techmed 02-19-2005, 01:32 PM Hey guys! That's great, especially if you are trying to pay off debt. But, try and make time for yourselfs prior to school starting. You may regret busting your hump all spring and summer instead of enjoying it. You'll get more than enough money in financial aid, so don't let that be your reason for working so hard. In regards to your classes, everyone will be in the same class, all 140 of you. civic4982 02-20-2005, 12:22 AM hey is anyone going to be in Western Europe in April? Just wondering if any of you are taking a trip since I'll be there. Shane: how much is the max we can get for fin. aid for first year? Do you remember how mcuh they allowed you to take out? Any tips on place to rent from that are nice out there and where I can find a 1 bedroom for less than 650-700? Lily22 02-20-2005, 09:55 AM Thanks for the info about the curriculum, Amy. Sounds like they haven't tied up the loose ends on it yet though. I like the block idea, but it seems like we won't be able to use old tests or upperclassmen for as much help. We'll all be in the same boat though, and I'm psyched to see they are trying to modernize it a little bit. As for apartments, living in Lubbock is cheap and the majority of places will be under 700 for a one bedroom. Plus it doesn't take very long to get across town so you can be pretty open as to where you want to live. amy2003uva 02-21-2005, 01:33 PM hey is anyone going to be in Western Europe in April? Somewhere inbetween those dates will hopefully be the biggest single adventure of my life. I've never traveled alone to a foreign country with n oone I know living there before so this will be exciting. The plan so far is to spend some time in France/Spain/Italy/Greece. I'm picking up my internal frame backpack and eurorail pass this week! I wish I was like the rest of you and got to start in the fall. I'd save up more money and go see Asia as well. I have to start May 30th so I'm packing my trip in ASAP. With the extra program I think I lose the next 2 summers and then the 2 summers after that will probably confine me to some type of preceptorships from what my friends have told me. SOOO... this is my last break before going to prison for the next 8+ years. Anyways there was a point to this and that is : If you're gonna be in any of these 4 countries in April we should meet up! theringworm 02-21-2005, 06:46 PM hey is anyone going to be in Western Europe in April? Any tips on place to rent from that are nice out there and where I can find a 1 bedroom for less than 650-700? Vinh, according to FAFSA they alotted me around ~31,000. Now keep in mind I have a kid and a wife. The funny thing was though, my buddies who were single were getting just as much. So this is how it will play out. You'll send in your FAFSA (hopefully real soon), then it goes to Tech and Tech comes back with a figure on how much they are going to loan you. For some it's enough for others it's not even close, esp. if you are working in a high paying field right now. If you need more, go up to Student Services and talked to Sherrie (I think that's her name) and tell her you want a budget revision form. You'll take this form, put in the exspenses that are more realistic and then give it back to her. Generally within a day or two, she'll notify you of how much more you are eligible for. It's literally that simple. The max from the fed. govt you can loan is 38,500. You can always go to the private sector if you need more, though I would try to avoid that (hihger interest rates). Just as an example, I have a guy in my class who is taking out about 60,000 a yr in loans. He has 4-5 kids, and is making two mortgage payments. If you need the money it's accessible. One more thing, Spring Training for you guys is April 8th-10th so put it down on your calendars. Friday night will be a nice dinner/get together w/ all your classmates and the current first years at the Caprock winery. Sat will have a golf tournament, a picnick at the lake, and apt shopping. Sun morning will be breakfast. You'll get a letter about this in the mail. I just wanted to give yall the heads up b/c last year we got our letter in regards to this a little late. civic4982 02-21-2005, 09:30 PM One more thing, Spring Training for you guys is April 8th-10th so put it down on your calendars. The positives about going to spring training are that you get to meet your class mates, you'll have an opportunity to look at several apts for rent, and you'll have a good time. If you don't go, you'll meet your classmates when school starts and you'll end up looking for a place to stay after you get here. So in my opinion, go to Europe and enjoy yourself. Spring training is fun and all, but it's definitely no where close to Europe. Besides, if you need a place to stay for a couple of days before you find an apt to move into, I've got an extra bedroom as I am sure so do others here. civic4982 02-22-2005, 10:06 PM Vinh, in my opinion I would skip the training and go on the trip. I haven't really made any arrangemetns for living yet so... it's very flexible at the moment. Unfortunately the pre-med office here has been of little help in advising me as a non-trad. You know the typical "3.7GPA 30 MCAT, lots of EC's, research, etc." I do not feel that the MCAT will be my toughest hurdle but rather my overall GPA from my original undergrad (Accounting/Finance 3.1). I left a position in commercial banking in Austin to return to school and I have a 3.86 since coming back (1 B in Gen Chem). Anyway, there is a little background info if it is worth anything. The phys department is rough but hey I actually know my stuff (pathophys in 2nd year isnt bad thanks to tech) so they are doing something right. I don't personally care that much, but there is a certian amount of randomness associated with this test that could be a problem. I'm not talking about low averages or individual questions, but the fact that many at the top of the class failed and several who have never been near the plus side of the class average beat it on this test. After a few regrades and tossing out 10 questions, the ave stands at a 71. On some level, I think this might be good for certian students, but then again, the action needs to be taken against the phys dept for writing such a rediculously irrelavent test. techmed 02-26-2005, 11:32 AM Have any of you gotten another information packet from Tech yet besides the one with the acceptance letter in it? amy2003uva 02-26-2005, 04:19 PM Have any of you gotten another information packet from Tech yet besides the one with the acceptance letter in it? techmed - nope! just the all-important acceptance letter. on another note: how many of your classmates are going to be in our som class? i wish they'd put a listing out of acceptees so we can see who's on it! to everyone looking for housing - i don't know how hard it will be to find a place once school starts, since there are soo many students here. however, i do know that the options are plentiful and the houses for rent/purchase here are inexpen$ive (and in most cases, spacious with fenced yards). in particular, tech terrace is a great neighborhood; i highly recommend it. the tech terrrace park is two houses away from our house, and it's great for our german shepherds (as it would also be for those of you with children). the park is well-manicured and it's also very safe. the neighborhood is well-kept, established, quiet, and affordable. there are frequently a few homes for rent, so you just have to hit it at the right time. there are mostly single families in tech terrace, with some undergrad students and even more graduate students. our next door neighbor is an accounting professor and across the street is a resident and his family. anyway, if any of you want any more info about the neighborhood or living here in general, give me a holla! ps - tech terrace is located in the vicinity of 20-30th streets and indiana-boston (check out a lubbock map to see what i mean). basically this area is MUCH closer to the SOM than places further south. the med school is located around 5th and indiana, for reference. some housing recommendations have been south of the loop, and these places are definitely newer and nice, but they can be located at 60-100th street; this would put you almost 100 blocks from class, versus 20 blocks. personally, i plan to bike to class on nice days - definitely a perk of living close to campus! hope this information helps you all!! :) amy 2tall 02-26-2005, 05:47 PM civic...amy...your comments about my post were incredibly kind. Should give you all a head's up instead of just searching around on the internet like I did. I don't know that I'd just show up before orientation & try to find housing then. Remember, there's a whole application process & they have to prepare the apartment before you move in so it could take longer than you think. I found mine on the internet (too lazy to drive 9 hours to Lubbock), called to get an application sent to me, sent that back with the application fee, & then called a week later to make sure I was good. The whole thing took nearly a month. I showed up the day before orientation with my deposit check & 1st month's rent. I wouldn't suggest doing it this way, but it's possible if your summer is hectic. Hey Ted, stop complaining about the Phys test! The typical overachieving students did poorly b/c they were actually required to apply information instead of just regurgitating it!!! Lily22 03-01-2005, 10:07 PM I'd probably also agree not to wait until right before orientation to find a place to live. You may luck out and find a good place, but since there are so many students, they fill up quickly. Also, I'd agree that tech terrace is a great neighborhood with a nice mix of people, plus it's super close to campus. I live south of the loop and I love it out there, though. I am right by restaurants and shopping, and I can make it to campus in 10 minutes, which is close enough for me. Be careful of a couple of apartment complexes right around campus-a couple of them are full of undergrads and are like the dorms (loud and lots of parties). And even when i did it wasnt a big deal. It is really quiet, great management, great workout room. It's also like 2-5 minutes from the mall, a bunch of video places, theater, clubs, starbucks, restuarants, fast food, etc.. Another good place to check out is Canyon Crossing. It's real cheap and has huge rooms, and even closer to campus (5-10 minutes). Enclave is 500 for a 1-1. Lily is absolutely right. Anything that's right on top of Tech's campus is going to be a horrible place to live - over priced & loud. I'd also be a little careful with Canyon Crossing, lots of our classmates live there, but several of them are having issues with maintenance. I know at least 2 students who have roofs that are leaking that have taken forever to be repaired. If I were you, I'd do some of my own research online - only you know what really matters to you most in an apartment, and once you have it narrowed down to a few, post em here or email a current student (Possibly your Big Bro/Sis) for their thoughts to help you decide. Like say if it says NW/NE/SW/SE Lubbock what that should mean to me? hey civic - those NW lubbock complexes are v. nice - bear creek and ashton pointe. a big plus to those, also, is that all you have to do to get to campus is head down 4th street and - bam - you hit TTU. also, i don't think a lot of undergrads are in that area. quail creek and heritage are in the SW parts of town, which is much removed from the university and thus will tend to be quieter. in terms of safety, both NW and SW lubbock are comfortably safe and friendly - i think the key word here is "west". east lubbock tends to have higher crime/higher drug use. i know this b/c as a medic we go to the overdoses, shootings, stabbings, etc. predominately on the east side. granted, lubbock is not the crime hub of the country, but i'd stay to the west of ave Q or university ave. like i said, NW lubbock has some nice complexes, ashton pointe and bear creek being two that i have seen in person. running 911 calls, i've been able to see a sampling of virtually all areas of lubbock. i hope this helps! amy techmed 03-05-2005, 01:06 PM When is the information in the packet they sent us due? Helen (hjt) hjt 03-05-2005, 06:18 PM Oh, i've also been looking over this website to get some ideas http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate/TX-Lubbock.html Right now, I'm considering for 1 bedroom (starting rate from $450 to $577) the following. Some of them have already been mentioned. Bentwood Summertime Villa ($450) Dakota Arms ($577) The Fountains Hunter's Way Oakridge Sagewood Sundowner Willage West Willow Hill ...still looking. Looks like plenty of options, good options. Most of them have good reviews (or no really bad ones...especially on noice/UG) and have good floor plans =). Helen 2tall 03-05-2005, 09:51 PM When is the information in the packet they sent us due? It went to my permenant address for some reason and it may be a while before I get it. Also is it from admissions or student affairs? Thanks. I think March 25th or 30th. It's not in front of me now, but it's one of those dates. DualSuperLead 03-05-2005, 11:08 PM Hey guys, Congratulations on getting into Texas Tech! I just wanted to let you all know that I am from Amarillo and would be happy to answer any questions that you might have about going to Amarillo for your 3rd-4th years. I also interned at the Amarillo campus for 3 summers and worked with quite a few faculty members in various departments. I can answer anything from "what is the surgery department like?" to "is it true that you have hail the size of softballs up there?" (Yes). I know that relatively few Tech students get to stay in Lubbock, so I know at least some of you will end up in A-town. Let me know if I can help. hjt 03-06-2005, 05:12 AM This might be useful for those who are still trying to decide on MS3/MS4. You can find other posts by searching for "Texas Tech Class of 2008" ***************Post from last Year************* If u want to do ortho (from a previous post) I think what matters most is ur grades, ur step 1 score, research( publications in anything is impressive and theres alot of opportunites here at tech), grades in ur 3rd year which u can accomplish at any of the 3 campuses. Now this is what will probably happen: U come to med school do great ur first 2 years, get published, get a high USMLE score, then u do really well ur 3rd year at any of the campuses. In ur 4th year do ur away rotations at a bad ass ortho program and impress them, then when u apply for ortho u can use that away rotation as a means into getting into that competitive program or many others. So it really doesnt matter where u do ur 3rd year as long as ur grades are good. Here is what I've heard about the various campuses: lubbock: u will learn alot here, u are forced to. amarillo: a whole lot of surgery exposure, there are no residents, its very laid back and ive heard some people get a false idea about surgery here cuz no resident to tell them how it is, and the attendants are kinda laid back. So when some people actually started a surgery residency, they ended up hating it cuz it was nothing like there rotations. However, this place is easy and chill El paso: a lot of partying, everyone has fun here, alot of drama, residents hooking up w med students etc... its easy to sneak out of rotaitons and slack off cuz its so busy and noone cares like they do in lubbock. So u can learn alot here if u are motivated. Its easy to switch to el paso, so if u are unsure, u can pick lubbock or amarillo now and change later on. Again, im only a first year, so what im saying is just what fourth years have told me; i really dont know so take it for whatever its worth. if u got questions about the first year holler at ya boy Omar *******************another post********************** "Its easy to switch to el paso, so if u are unsure, u can pick lubbock or amarillo now and change later on. " Actually, that's not true. I'm a second year at Tech, and I was fortunate enough to get the switch to El Paso, but I know of at least 4 people who didn't get to switch. One of my good friends didn't get to switch, and she was devastated, leading to much heartache all around. I think it's a really crappy thing to make people decide where they want to go four months before school even starts, since we know nothing about the school, the facilities at any of the campuses, or who our friends are going to be. So I would recommend doing as much research as possible before making your request. Making the switch is not as much of a slam dunk as many people have suggested. And for the most part, you need to be either married or and MD/MBA to stay in Lubbock. But congratulations to all who were accepted, and I'm sure you will love Tech as much as I do. ********************************************** Luck! Helen....El Paso? thackl 03-06-2005, 08:17 AM Unless you have a good reason for being in lubbock, I've been told by past students that Amarillo is the way to go. The call it "They Country Club" for a reason and you will get expirience and exposure there that you may not see until 2-3rd yr of residency. Past students have told me that you have to work to remember that you are not a Dr yet when in Amarillo. This is just what I have heard and if I wasn't bound here in lubbock with wife and kids, that's where i would go. amy2003uva 03-06-2005, 05:01 PM hey all - do any of you raiders know any current students in el paso who might be willing to show me & my boyfriend the hospital/campus there? we're going down there for the last weekend in march b/c we've never been there and are unsure of how to rank el paso for the 3rd and 4th years. my bf is into the idea of border medicine and he thinks that there would be a lot of good trauma in el paso, but i am interested in surgery and am leaning towards amarillo (between ranking the two 2nd and 3rd). we are hoping that visiting the campus in el paso will help us make the decision, but we have no idea where the school is/what would be good to see while we're there. since we'll be driving 8 hours, i want to make the most of our time there! if any of you have any contacts or other info, that would be MUCH appreciated!!! thanks so much for your help. :D amy civic4982 03-06-2005, 11:38 PM ok I've postponed my trip to Europe until April 12th so I:could make Spring Training! :D Is anyone driving up from Dallas that w/end? I'm flying into Dallas from Orange County just about a week earlier and I'm not sure if I'll be able to buy my new car by then or if I might have to wait a while for them to have it built to my specs. I might think about just flying to Lubbock but just seeing if anyone was going that way anyways... Oh and where are we gonna stay that w/end? Should I start booking hotels now? Will I need to rent a car when I get there or will the bus us around that w/end? Thanks. Dr.Isabella 03-07-2005, 09:06 AM Hi everyone! I've been trying to figure out a way to be able to attend the spring training, but it doesn't seem like it will be possible for me to go. I was hoping that any of the current med students would tell me how important is it to attend this training? I'm afraid that I'll be missing out on important stuff. What do you think? Thanks Dr.Isabella 03-07-2005, 09:11 AM I forgot to mention that I was in Lubbock a couple of weeks ago, and I've already decided on a place to live so I won't be needing to look for apartments anymore. civic4982 03-07-2005, 09:14 AM I forgot to mention that I was in Lubbock a couple of weeks ago, and I've already decided on a place to live so I won't be needing to look for apartments anymore. What complexes did you see? Any ratings on them? What'd you end up getting and for how much? sallazar 03-07-2005, 12:34 PM Congrats to all of you who will entering the class of 2009. I am a 1st year who lives at Canyon Crossing. For the most part, it is a nice place to live. Although what Arsenel Gunner said about the roof leaking is true--that was my roof! The maintenance is a little slow at getting things done. Other than that is a great place to live. I pay $500 for a very large one bedroom facing the pool. One important piece of advise though for all of you incoming students signing leases for apartments. Many apts in Lubbock will give you a better deal if you sign a year lease instead of 6 or 9 month leases. They do this to keep the apts full during the summer when many students leave. Make sure you will be staying for the summer here before you sign the lease!! Otherwise you'll be stuck paying the summer rent whick will be far more than the discount they gave you for signing the 12 mo. lease. I got sucked into this and will now have to stay here or go somewhere for the summer and still pay the rent. If anybody has any other questions about anything feel free to PM me. theringworm 03-10-2005, 07:55 PM ok I've postponed my trip to Europe until April 12th so I:could make Spring Training! :D Is anyone driving up from Dallas that w/end? Hey Vinh, we are trying to make some housing available to you guys so that you don't have to fork out the extra cash for a hotel. There should be somewhere on those papers that says something in regards to you RSVPing for this. If not let me know and I'll see what I can do. dndn 03-11-2005, 09:52 AM For the spring training weekend are we all going to drive to the different events around Lubbock in our own cars or will we all be going in a school van? TX_Longhorn 03-11-2005, 01:58 PM For the spring training weekend are we all going to drive to the different events around Lubbock in our own cars or will we all be going in a school van? good question. arsenalgunner 03-11-2005, 04:46 PM Trying to address the last couple of pages of questions... Those looking for housing, try www.lubbockapartments.com The site is so-so, but you can order a free apartment guide from the site which is very good & has pics of all the places. During spring training, members of our class are currently signing up to drive you guys around to various events. So, unless you want to drive yourself, everyone should have a ride to each of the events & for apartment browsing. Campus selection: Don't sweat this decision too much, it's not as important as it seems. Everyone who has an opinion on the topic will have a biased opinion b/c they have either never been on a rotation at either hospital as of yet (like me), or they selected one or the other so they only know what their location was like. I've never spoken with a student unhappy with their decision. The rumors are...go to Amarillo to be a surgeon, go to El Paso for primary care/internal med. Despite your decision, you will still be able to go into whatever field you want no matter which site you choose. The bad thing is, that Tech forces you to make this decision too early. You'll find that a lot of your friends will be going to a different campus than you are. It sucks, but on the other hand, you are going to be given more responsibility than almost any other 3rd & 4th years in the country due to the nature of these hospitals, which will, in the end, make you a better doc. Spring training: Fun, but certainly not mandatory. Don't sweat it if you can't go. We're going to golf, eat, drink, listen to bands, tell you all to relax & enjoy your summer, and the single 1st & 2nd years are going to ogle you. If you can't make it now, they'll be plenty of time for eating, drinking, & ogling during orientation! civic4982 03-11-2005, 05:57 PM ...and the single 1st & 2nd years are going to ogle you. ...
