I'm pretty sure that's where I'll be going in Aug. That is unless I get an acceptance to Cornell in March or by some miracle Mt. Sinai decides to finally interview and accept me!
Any one else out there planning on going to NYU?

same here.....interviewed in november, and realized that a lot of people have already received acceptances - trying not to think the worst, but my interview went kinda bad - but i loved the school regardless!

good luck!!! :luck: :luck: :luck:

I second that.. I just interviewed last week (due to complete procrastination in aamcas and secondaries) and I absolutely loved it.... anyone else interview with Dr. Ort, she was amazing!!!

One question.... Anyone kinda weirded out by the co-ed bathrooms??

Yeah the housing is one thing that I didn't like when I saw it. I go to the NYU now and the housing for undergraduate freshman isn't as bad as it is at Rubin. No undergraduate or graduate dorms have communal bathrooms so I think it's really weird to have it for the med students.
Oh well..I still loved the school so I'll still be there in Aug!

NYU is definitely one of my top choices right now, but still also deciding between Mt. Sinai, U mich, and U MD (my state school). I love NYC though!

the dorms @ yale also had coed bathrooms...I stayed there over the summer...They seemed a little newer perhaps than those at NYU, but the ones at NYU really weren't that bad...communal bathrooms are great because you don't have to clean them!!

I disagree... NYU is rolling admissions so if they definitely didn't want you, they would have rejected you already post-interview. If anything, the lack of response you've gotten from them suggests that they put you in a hold/waitlist pile and wanted to wait until the end of the interview season to decide on you. I'm fairly certain you're still in the running. Good luck next week! (Good luck to myself as well lol)

From reading previous threads, I actually heard that NYU's acceptances are given on a rolling basis, but the rejections and waitlists are given on Feb 15th. So, the lack of response could mean either.

I'm in the same situation as the previous poster. I interviewed mid-November and haven't heard anything. My interview wasn't very stellar, so i'm not expecting much. Good luck everybody! I'll be sending out good vibes next week!

to the accepted future class of nyu med -- congrtas on being accepted! i'm a rising 2nd year and am moving into nyu med apartment housing with a rising 3rd year. we're considering a third person for our place, and are open to having one of you lucky incoming 1st years move in with us. we're VERY laid back, clean, respect each other's space and are looking for same. we both work hard and play hard and are looking for someone who's not a complete book worm and not a complete party animal -- someone who can "keep it real." male/female okay. rent is ~ $700/month including everything. deadline is VERY soon -- need to know by the end of this week (3/17/05). sorry for the late notice. write back if interested! you must be sure you're attending.

Hey guys,
Is there any1 whose going to NYU thinking bout doing the honors program this summer.? I was really thinking bout doing it but I don't wanna be burned out from research before school starts. I kinda wanted to relax this summer. I'm having a hard time deciding because if I do the honors reserach this summer I will be able to stay in the city and move into my dorm early although I'll be in the lab from 10-5. What do you guys think?

the1111gal

I think I've posted elsewhere that if I go to NYU I'm def doing it--chance to move in early and get used to the city, etc...In other news, I got my financial aid package from them...eh...I'd be about 195k in debt if it stays constant over 4 years...that's a lot of debt!!!!!!

Yeah, my financial aid package sucked, too. What's the deal? I would have thought NYU could have afforded to give out a little bit more! Come on, NYU! Stop being cheap.

I actually have the opposite reaction to my financial package..I luv it!!! I got 31,000 in NYU scholarship so I'll only have to take out bout 17,000 in loans. My package pretty much finalized my decision to go to NYU :D

Iamajew

damn, that's awesome aar239. I still haven't received my fin aid package yet - when did you complete your FAFSA?

About the honors program, i contacted the coordinator to ask her how students who do not start the summer before 1st year complete the program by the end of school. Here's what she said:

option 1: start summer going into second year, finish during third year elective block option 2: start summer going into second year, finish during fourth year elective block option 3: start third year during elective block, finish fourth year during elective block option 4: take off a year between third & fourth for research

I think i'd rather take the summer off before starting school and just complete the program through options 1 or 2. Working 9 weeks during an elective block seems pretty doable...it's not a huge chunk of time.

Hey everyone, I just got an offer off of the waitlist today, I am just not sure if I want to go yet!! To those of you who received financial aid packages, did any of you NOT get any sort of free money at all? I am just curious if I should expect at least a couple thousand? (1, 2, 3, anything) to help defray the costs a bit. Also, to anyone that is married or in a long term relationship, does anyone know anything about couples housing?? My long time girlfriend will be accompanying me and I was just curious about this aspect. Thanks everyone!!!

Hey jodvez,
Congratulations on your acceptance. I got no free money from them. I got the maximum subsizidized stafford amount which helps a little (efc of 0), but that's the best part of my package....just goes downhill from there. I can't wait to attend though and am actually crazy enough to not factor money into my decision to go there. It isn't because i have the money, it's because i really think nyu is a great place. If it is aecom or nyu for you and you like new york city and what nyu has to offer, i don't think you have much of a decision to make.
As for the married housing, i'm getting married in a month and asked a lot about this during my interview and with the housing people. Unfortunately, there is no "couples housing", but you can apply for housing in the Sackler Institute. It is very reasonable there (somewhere around 700-1200 in price range) and the rooms are a little bit bigger than what you can get at Rubin Hall...although they only offer one bedrooms and nothing bigger. If your spouse isn't the medical type (as mine isn't), living in a hospital isn't the greatest either. I think there are some apartments in sackler that don't have more than one window in them. And for being married and living in Rubin, you don't want to even try that...unless sharing a bathroom with other people on your floor is your thing.
I just moved across the street from nyu med in this insane building called kip's bay towers. It is amazing. The complex itself is composed of 4 buildings which pretty much occupy 30-33 streets between 1st and 2nd avenue. You have a private park. You have a great apartment (studios are roughly 700-800sq ft. and one bedrooms go to 1400 sq ft.), a great building where tons of residents, med students, and doctors live, and couldn't be closer to nyu. Apartments there are more expensive to rent than student housing. Studios are 1700 and up and one bedrooms probably start at around 2000. BUT the units are MUCH cheaper here than other neighborhoods in manhattan because of the buidling's location on 2nd avenue (it's a little far from the subway). Go to www.kipsbaycondo.com or www.kipsbaytowers.com and call the number to find any available spaces. I'm having a great time living here.
Basically, unless it is your only option, you will be a lot happer living off campus. The housing department was pretty unhelpful in helping find a place for my wife and me. The woman who works there will help you find a place off campus by working with other brokers...but there is a markup on this type of service and you'll probably end up paying more this way than by going with a no-fee listing. If you need help or have any questions, feel free to PM me. Hope this helps.

Hey there LII. I actually received a snail mail letter informing me that I was admitted. I got it on saturday but it was dated may 13. Not sure if they waited to send it or if it just took a long time to arrive. If you have any additional inquiries let me know. I'm navigating the NYC housing market now to decide if this is the right move.

Wow, this thread has come to life again...I have to say that has gotten me a bit more excited for next fall.

About the beginning of next year, Orientation does start on August 22 (Monday) and we are allowed to move in on August 18 (the preceding Thursday).

I did get my financial aid as well, my EFC was 1000, and I got 3000 in free money. I think it may have helped though that I have a younger brother in college as well. All i nall the money doesn't worry me, because it wasn't going to be much cheaper than the 50 grand a year I am looking at at NYU. I was shocked when my state school sent me a budget of around 41,000 with no scholarship money--all loans. For me, its worth the extra 10 grand a year to be at a better med school in a much better location.

Looking forward to meeting everyone next year.

jdovez, had you received an email in the last week asking about your continued interest?

In fact I did receive an email asking about my continued interest on May 12. The letter offering me admission was dated May 13 (I emailed them back within minutes on the 12th indicating my interest). But I did not receive the letter until the 21st (and in the letter it had my old address, but the envelope had my new address.....go figure). I am not sure if they waited a few days to send it, or if somehow it just took a long time for the post office to find me :) In any event, I am going to call today to see if there is any way that I could receive some sort of financial aide information and/or housing information prior to making my decision. I am heavily leaning toward NYU, but looking at the housing market is a bit depressing!! In any event, thanks to all for the info, and if I do end up going, I will do what I can to keep this thread going strong ahhhnold after drinking a Red Bull.

I have been looking into the cost of NYU and it appears that for the incoming 2009 class, the cost of attendance has increased by 3K over the cost of the class of 2008. Further extrapolation using the MSAR indicated that tuition and fees increased by 2K the previous year (those comprised 2400 of the 3000 increase for the next years class). So, the cost of attendance over the last two years has increased at about 2500-3000 a year. Damn. Schools are expensive, but the rate of increase is pretty ridiculous (I know this same trend holds throughout the nation, though probably not as steep). If it holds, then by the time we are finished, we will owe about 27,500 above the amount if costs held steady at the class of 2008 rate of 51,880 (including health care costs). That would mean the total cost of attendance if you start next year would be about...$234-235K. Interesting.

As beaurocratic as they are, she's right. Couples housing as a first year is kinda tough- there are these two-bedroom suites in Rubin (the dorm) that I know one of my classmates lives in with her husband and the rest of our classmates who are married/engaged/living with sig's just live off campus.

So i say, get that info in fast, and cross your fingers and toes

That's hard to answer probably even for the housing office, but I would say if you are a single person then its pretty likely you can have a spot. They have quite a bit of housing. SOmeone I know even was placed in a couples housing suite with no roomate for a year because they just didn't have another person to put in there. That tells me that it is likely they have enough space. Good luck.

I actually just called to ask that question today. They said that it is scheduled for August 26, and that it is pretty certain it will not change again (it sounds like it may have been moving around a bit prior to now).

Also, for previous posts in this thread, I will be living in Rubin and moving in on the 18th when we are first allowed to.

quick question for everyone: did anyone get awarded less money on the preliminary financial aid award letter than the budget calls for? Has anyone in this position contacted the financial aid office about this (i'm waiting for a reply after the weekend)? Do you know if we are allowed to request more unsubsidized loan money to fill the gap?

I have come to this same realization. I imagine that you would be able to request more, but only if you don't hit the maximum. There is a maximum for unsub student loans, and I am 99% sure its 20k. If there is a gap in the prelim award with the federal loans maxed out, then you have to make it up with a private loan. There are a bunch of options for this, one of them being Medloans, which is run through AAMC. You hae to watch on these loans however, because they are the ones that can get pretty expensive.

Thanks for the info. I contacted the financial aid office, but probably won't hear back until next week. Don't you think it's crazy that nyu's budget is ABOVE what federal loans can give? It seems kind of ridiculous to me.

FaytlND
07-03-2005, 01:10 PM
It is kind of crazy. Unfortunately, many private schools have these kind of budgets...even some state schools if you are not a resident. And if you think about it, the federal loans will cover the actual tuition, which is all the government should be concerned about doing. The actual living expenses are what really make the cost high, and in NYC, that can't be helped. Also, its better if they overestimate your budget, if they were conservative so loans could cover it all, then many might find themselves unable to find enough money to attend.

just as a note, from my package it seems that the max unsub. amount is $30,000. They give 10,000 automatically and I have another optional 20,000 of which I can ask all or some part.

i got it about three weeks ago, and i didn't have any problems aside from the frustration of dishing out more money, $35, for the vaccine.

i don't know how accurate this is, but the nurse who gave me the vaccine said that the vaccine doesn't even cover the most common type of meningitis. how messed up is that, no?

I went to the student clinic today to get the PPD done and asked about the meningitis...they said that you do not have to get it if you will be living off campus or in a room with a privet bathroom...so I got the familiar waiver of vaccine to sign.

It was nice to find out that the student clinic is in one of the dorms (the one across the street from the med school). No need to run around in the snow when you are already sick.

I look forward to meeting everyone soon! Are we certain that the white coat ceremony is the 28th?

Well it doesn't sound like there is too much movment on the waitlist either. I just think SDN attracts people who go to certain schools for some odd reason. I mean look at the Yale thread, it has like 10 posts, and I know that their class is full.

In any event, I just had my physical today, and its really started to hit me that we will be starting in a little over a month. I definitely can't wait.

I saw that info about testing out of MGB, but I figure that the refresher won't be a bad thing, especially since we will have to review it again anyway for the boards. I would prefer not trying to spend my last month before school studying, considering that there will be more than enough during the year.

Also, does anyone remember about how big the rooms are in Rubin? I need to start figuring out how much stuff I can bring, and it would be great to figure out their dimensions. I am also hoping the bed they provide is a double, but I am afraid that's just a pipe dream.

Having worked in the NYU undergrad, I know firsthand how disconnected the different offices are in terms of getting things done and financially. I think the orientation stuff is probably mainly in the hands of the students to run, and they were probably given a limited budget. However, to be able to see Avenue Q for $25 bucks, or to have an all day outdoor event for $15 bucks means that there is heavy subsidation. Plus, this is optional stuff, so eh if you don't want to do the $$ stuff, you don't have to.

Oh and Sinephera, I didn't get a chance to go up to the rooms. I actually saw one a few years back (a friend of mine was in it), but I didn't think I'd be living there so I didn't take notes on it. The bathroom will have somewhere to bathe and somewhere to handle your business and thats about all I remember. If you get any more info, please let me know. Also, did you guys get your actual housing assignments in the mail yet? I still have it on word that I got a place, but I would feel much better seeing it in print. Oh yeah, and congrats on actually getting a room, persistence often is the key.

Also, I was unaware that the building was not air conditioned. Looks like I will be buying a window unit, and I am going to be unmerciful with the thermostat. One of the benefits of the utilities being included in the rent.

Also, now that i think about it, I wish I would have kept my bed loft from undergrad.

Room Size: There are two types of rooms, large-10x17 and Small 10x14. The suites have one of each

Construction: is on the North side of Rubin where the large, odd numbered rooms are. :(
The work is 7am-6pm weekdays. And they claim they’ll be done by Dec. 2005.

Also, for whoever asked earlier the suites are $990/month.

Finally, for those of you who have parents that are flying in for White coat etc. are they going to be here for the orientation week? It sucks that we are busy before White coat and have class right after...some of us are mommy's girls and need some bonding time...any words of strategic wisdom?

I still have to try my ID. Do you guys think we will still need an AC by late august? Im thinking maybe itll be a bit cooler by then (or hope so at least). As far as the meningitis vaccine goes, it wasn't bad at all. Just expect that your deltoid will be sore the rest of the day and less so the next day (at least that was my experience). I got that and the tetanus at the same time and it was pretty neat feeling the difference in absorption rates (ie the tetanus was more sore the next and subsequent days).

Also, does anyone know if the dorms in Rubin have closets/dressers? I am assuming they have closets, if not that would be a little ridiculous, seeing that they provide bed/desk/bookcase.

Also, for those concerned about the email address length, etc., you can set up your account so it forwards to another email address. I have a gmail account that I really like to use (for the features, if not for the fact that it should allow me not to change my email addy for more than 4 years), and I had them set up my nyu email to forward to that address. You just have to send an email to the tech people requesting it.

To answer some questions,

There are closets in Rubin, I believe the pamphlet should say what Rubin comes with.

There are 14 flrs in Rubin, 15 would be the roof.

Rubin's ceiling is tall enough to fit most furniture, you did visit the dorms didn't you?

As for AC, if you can tough it out for a few weeks, you can buy 2nd hand ac cheap next summer when people start moving again. Though some people use the ac to counter-balance our heating system, which tends to turn the room into a sauna. I personally just open the window.

You can bring whatever you please into the rooms, no one is gonna check. Swords, fridges, halogen lamps, microwaves, etc.

Yes you can change your e-mail but I am to lazy to do it so I don't know how that's done.

Hope that helps, enjoy your summer people and don't worry too much about moving and orientation.

I don't think it's ever required but it seems like more and more med students and physicians are buying them... I've used one just for scheduling and whatnot in college and it is useful. I'd think that if you don't have one now, you'd want to wait until 3rd year so you have the most advanced technology when doing clinical rotations. Nellie Mae? I am actually working out the financial aid details. I called the bursar's office today, and they said you can pretty much pick and choose which loans to take. I will send out a check to them tomorrow along with a letter explaining which loans I am declining. Did anyone else also get charged $3600 for Rubin (i have a small room-$600/mth). I thought the bill was only for the semester (6 months though for housing?).

Yeah, I have been wondering about this as well. I called the Fin Aid office, and they said there should have been an email with instructions. I did not receive such an email,so i was gettinga bit nervous. I called Nellie/Sallie Mae myself, and they gave me the website for the MPN: http://www.opennet.salliemae.com

EDIT: SO I realized the NY Higher Eduation one was for a PLUS loan. I filled out the MPN on the Sallie Mae site, and it seems to have worked.

I think we are still pretty much at the wear whatever floats your boat unless you are doing something with patients stage of life.

ABSO-F*CKNIG-LUTELY last chance to really wear whatever you want

except a bunch tend to wear ties to the exams but that ends by head-neck

regarding the SallieMae lender, I got the email today, started an account, but basically NYU has done all the work for you, you just "sign" it.

There will definitely be pots and pans in the kitchen, but if you're picky about what you like, feel free to bring your own. They also just put in some great big freezers so you can stock up on food too.

Anyone know what the closest ATM is to Rubin?

Hey everyone,

So I went into Rubin on Friday to see my room and the surrounding. As for the construction the building adjacent is taller but it is parallel to the river while Rubin is perpendicular...so if you are on the north-east side of the building (higher en odd numbers) you get a view if you look diagonal out of your window...a nice view.
The new

The rooms have a desk and a drawer cubby with book shelves on top...
My suite has a small freestanding closet in the big room, and a narrow walk-in closet in the small room.

The kitchen has a couple of microwaves, toaster ovens, a stove, and a fridge...all the basics. Though the freezer is not there the renovation crew there did say it is coming (they are now fixing an painting everything).

However, I saw quite a few rooms had personal mini-refrigerators so I'm shopping for one now.

Hope this helps...

Also, for the dorm charge...you are going to get charged for 6 month at a time...and you do NOT have vacation time from it...if you plan to be away for the summer you must sublet. The sublet instructions are in the housing packet.

Anyone know what the closest ATM is to Rubin?

150 ft, Bank of America, in front of the Library right near the new ticket booth.

Is anyone else still having problems with the email login?

I still cannt log in, and I've been calling the help desk all this time and they're just telling me to call back in a couple of days, and then nothing is fixed again and they again say to call back later. Now the last time I called the guy told me to come in in person after I get my photo ID (which is during orientation week).
Has anyone else been having these problems with the help desk ?

Anyhow, since I cannt check my mail, I would greatly appreciate if you guys told me if there was/is any significant information that you have recieved from NYU through the school email.
thanx

Mostof what I have receved is pretty inconsequential, and doesn't really apply to me. I will try and give a quick rundown:

***-The one important email was a reminder that you need to fill out two surveys before school starts. One is on AAMCs website. The other you needed to follow a specific link in the email, because I assume each persons link has a different code so they know you filled it out, as there was no where to enter your name, etc on the survey. You should email lisa.murashige@med.nyu.edu to get this email sent to an address you have access to.
-Welcome from Student Affairs, with website for orientation info (electronic copies of the stuff they mailed) at http://www.med.nyu.edu/studentaffairs/orientation
-Reminder to send in Photo for ID badge
-An email about Dell specials through the computing store (these weren' even good deals...you can get better prices by waiting around for dell coupons and ordering directly from them)
Some email about the Institutional Review Board which seemed like it shouldn't concern us
-A invite to the welcome gathering of the Deans Committee for Women
-Something about Fiscal Year deadlines for accounts payable (again, don't think this is for us)

So for those living in RUbin and planning on getting a window AC unit, have you started looking for one? I have been looking around on the web, but all the ones I have found say max window width is 36". This would seem to be a problem since they said in the info that the windows are 37.5" wide. Anyone have any luck with a unit that would fit this?

Not only dowe get scrubs, I seem to remember a rather cool scrubs "dispenser". You putin youdirty ones, and can get a new set. I think the one we saw was only for MS2s, and they were in the process of getting one for MS1s. Or perhaps I have that backwardsand the already had one for MS1s. In any case, I am fairly sure that we do get them.

Well, its sort of snuck up on me, but I am leaving today and driving to NJ, then into the city and moving in tomorrow. Its exciting and anxiety-filled, all at the same time. See everyone this weekend.

Wow I moved in some stuff today and got a preview of the incoming class. All I can say is wow. It seems like it's a prereq for all the girls to look amazing (can't say much about the guys) - but then again I only saw a small sample and with so many family members there helping with the move-in, I had no idea who was in the class.

hahaha blz!!! FYI...I got this info from a friend going to NYU grad school . apparently there is a bed, bath and beyond special for NYU students on aug 28th from 8-midnight. It's only open for nyu students, and there is free shuttle service and free next day delivery and free prizes.

Also Best Buy sale on Sat. 10% off everything for students. However, sale items and open box are excluded.

Also, ACs are a little hard to come by since its the end of the season. I basically got the last one at Best Buy, which was an open box. There was however an appliance place across the street from it on 23rd between 5th and 6th that had a ton, and were all on sale. Just FYI.

Also something that would have saved a lot of time and frustration, we had a car here, and made the mistake of driving it around to pick up odds and ends. Not a great idea. Its much easier to just take cabs an throw the stuff in the trunk.

Does anyone know roughly what your chances for acceptance at NYU are post-interview? The USnews data I have indicates that more students were accepted than were interviewed (846 interviewed/943 accepted). I know Columbia has a long waitlist, is NYU similar? Also, is NYU rolling or not? Thanks.

As far as I could tell from this thread many of the people that were accepted ended up coming off a very long waitlist. I think this had more to do with the extreme increase in applications last year because of the addition of nyu to amcas. I imagine they may have worked the "bugs" out of the system though (ps I am sure that 943 is a type-0). Good luck. If I remember correctly, it is not rolling either. Good luck.
