i'm most likely going there. :) I love the school but I'm waitlisted somewhere else and have one more interview coming up so I'm going to wait and see.. but really great school, philly is awesome...sounds like a good place to spend the next 4 years.
lulubean 02-04-2005, 08:05 AM i haven't decided yet but i am definitely interested. are you both going to the admitted students day on april 14?
CalApplicant 02-04-2005, 09:28 AM I might be going to Jefferson this fall. So far it's the only place I've been accepted but I'm still on two other waitlists and praying for more interviews, although at this point I doubt I'll get anymore. Can someone tell me about Philadelphia and why it's such a great city? When I visited, I liked the school, the campus and the people but I didn't really like the city itself. I didn't feel safe and I thought the atmosphere was kinda gloomy in general. Thanks for any thoughts!
notsittinpretty 02-04-2005, 09:34 AM I hope to be there with you guys next year!! I'm currently high priority waitlisted...anyone know how many people they accept who are in a similar position. Congratulations on your acceptance.

i got an announcement about it in the mail a couple days ago. yours is probably on the way :)
vcatz 02-04-2005, 12:05 PM I am most likely going to Jeff (99% sure). The new student day is April 14 & 15. Got the invite in the mail last week.
Dr Turninkoff 02-04-2005, 12:09 PM when are we supposed to get our fin. aid packages?

well, it depends on what you look for in a city. that area around jefferson is definitely safe so i wouldn't worry about that.. you're probably just not used to the east coast city feel.. as for gloominess, it's like other east coast cities; it often gets overcast in the winter.. however, the spring and fall are beautiful seasons here.. summer gets a little hot in the city, but the city clears out on the weekends b/c everyone goes to the shore... pm me if you have any specific questions.
vcatz 02-04-2005, 12:58 PM when are we supposed to get our fin. aid packages?
There is a seminar on financial aid for new Jeff students next friday. I think it is for locals but you may want to check into it. When I interviewed the financial aid person said we should get a package from them in early January - I have not recieved anything to date.

I was originally placed on the high priority waitlist at jeff in the middle of december. It was one of my top choices so I e-mailed dr. callahan in the middle of january and asked her what I could do to improve my application and she called me two days and offered me a spot! i've heard that everyone gets off the high priority waitlist originally, so keep calling/emailing them!

do u know where we can get more information on that financial aid seminar??
aingeal 02-06-2005, 07:06 AM yay! i've been waiting for this thread to pop up ...
as far as some of the above questions,
philly is a fabulous city b/c, like jefferson, it has a great population of truly friendly low key awesome people. it's the best of both worlds b/c it has the culture and fun of a city and the comfortable feel of home. it's a city with a lot of heart and tradition. the weather isn't as harsh as a lot of east coast cities more north, but we do experience all seasons fully unlike some more southern east coast cities. (and hey if you like that stuff we're in the middle of it all and you can just take a drive to visit or hop on the train.) the city is also very beautiful with its mix of modern skyscrapers and super old homes and parks. plus there's the natural beauty of fairmount park and river drive, etc. and then there's the food! ... i could go on ....
if you're on the waitlist i recommend contacting dr. callahan asap letting her know of your sincere interest in jefferson. feel free to pm for any specifics.
as far as other philly schools, esp temple, jeff first just has a better location. i don't have much experience with temple so i can't say too much else about it, but jeff has a better reputation as well. on the downside jeff also costs more than temple and penn st if youre instate. ... but you're gonna be in debt anyway.
so who is going to the april reception, and what do you think is appropriate attire?
afr0dite01 02-06-2005, 05:20 PM I'm so glad to see everyone so interested!! Maybe you'll be my classmates next year! :D

you sound like a jeff spokeswoman... tho id probbaly have to say that having 4 seasons isnt all that great... i'd take westcoast weather any day
aingeal 02-08-2005, 07:31 AM hahaha, sorry if i got a little over-excited. but i do have a lot of great things to come home to in philly.

I'll be going I'm sure. Just have to clear the calendar :p I havent gotten a chance to see the invite yet because it also went to my house. However I believe I was told that there is hosting that night because it is an overnight event. Not totally sure though. Hope to see you all there!! :D

Nittany Lion 02-10-2005, 07:53 AM I'm so excited! Just got my acceptance yesterday. I love Dr. Callahan!!! I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up there next year :-)

maryannea 02-16-2005, 11:55 PM hi guys. got the call today and I'm still freakin out. I'm definitely looking forward to meeting the Jefferson Class of 2009. Still waiting on Northwestern and Vandy but I'm pretty sure I'm coming to Jefferson :D
hooniedee 02-17-2005, 07:31 AM Ahhh got the call today too and I'm in. Dr. Callahan is the best she is soo nice and I love love the school.
Most definately going unless I hear something back from AECOM.
I know this is cheesy but I really feel like the weight of the world has been lifted off my shoulders.
I was in limbo hell 2 waitlisted and waiting on everything else until now . . .yeah!! :p :p
Props to Jefferson for being soo fast in their admission decision process.
nycmed8 02-17-2005, 12:18 PM Congratulations maryanne and hooniedee! I'm happy for you guys! How quick was your turnaround time? I interviewed last week, and would be so happy to attend.
Thanks!

afr0dite01 02-18-2005, 05:33 AM So where is everyone from? I've lived in PA all my life and I now attend school at a small liberal arts school in Allentown. Also, anyone know any good deals on apartments besides the on campus stuff?
On a personal note, I love how Jeff sends me mail and how many of the letters have a little msg written on it like "Welcome to the Jefferson Family." It makes me feel tinglely inside. hehe :D

scotchtape 02-26-2005, 10:52 AM As of now, I think I am going to jefferson or maybe einstein. Its a debate. Which would you guys suggest? They are close in ranking on USNEWS but I like the big class size at jefferson and being at the heart of the city is nice too. Did you guys get the IT email with your email address and stuff? It got me really excited.

Well I just replied but the computer ate it and I have no motivation to retype the extensive message I just sent. So in short....I had a similar situation plus I also got into my state school. I am much more fond of the NE where I am from so its a cost vs location issue. But I ended up giving up my seat to Jeff (hope someone cool on this thread got it!) in favor of possibly AECOM. There were many reasons, which you can PM me if you would like to know what they are. I have a friend at both schools in their first 2 years. Good luck, but essentially it boils down to which school "fits" you better. Jeff has good clinical rep and great location in philly. AECOM has more research opportunities and a focus on serving a very underserved population and society (students created socialized med class).....ok so this is longer than I thought and I hope it does not get gobbled up again. Good luck, again PM me if you have more questions.

hooniedee 02-28-2005, 09:39 PM I got the finaid package yesterday but do you guys know when they will be sending out housing info?
Their website only lists avail apts and the price but doesn't really say the specifics like avail move in dates or roomate selection or etc...My lease ends 5/31 and I don't know if I should renew it or not. Do you think they'd let ppl move in June even if class begins in Aug?
To keep my options open I've started apt hunting but gosh Center City is a really $$$ place to live. I haven't even seen a one bedroom for under $900.
What are yall planning to do about housing? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Philadelphia is one of the "cheaper" cities to live in. Boston and New York are even worse. I was paying 800 for my share of a 2BR in Boston, and 1240 for my share of a 3BR in New York. Philadelphia's low cost of living is one of the reasons I'm swaying towards Jefferson right now. A good place to look for off campus housing is Craig's List (http://philadelphia.craigslist.org) . Anyone know waht they're doing to do about the car situation in their third and fourth year? Since the Jeff health system is so large, I don't see how we're going to get down to Dupont Children's in DE for the rotation. I'm not a current car-owner, and I'm reluctant to take on more debt...

i already received a housing package
you could try an apt in overbrook or on the main line (merion, narberth, wynnewood, ardmore ...) close to the train, but i don't know how they compare price-wise
also in the city you could look into south philly, where i'm sure you could find one-bedrooms for cheaper than 900/mo
also, when is the $100 deposit due, 3/15? thanks

I think the deposit is due may 15th. In terms of housing...I found a pretty cheap apartment complex (http://www.westminster-arch.com/) on 22nd and arch - about 10 blocks away from jeff...its a bit of a walk but the apartments are cheap in comparison to most places in center city (esp the 2 bedroom ones).

i checked out that website and it looks like a nice place, except jeff has apts for the same price which are right across the street. any current students have insight on on-campus living? i heard mixed reviews but no specifics on my interview day. thanks again
EMTLiz 03-08-2005, 09:34 AM Hi everyone!
I just thought I would add my name to the list! I am not 100% sure where I will end up yet (still waiting for some places) but am really excited about Jeff. I've spent the last 4 years in the area going to school and would like to stay :)

I was in Philly today so I stopped by the housing office to look at the on-campus apartments - I looked at a one-bedroom apartment in Orlowitz and a two-bedroom in Barringer - they are actually really nice. I'm more interested in the two bedroom: its fairly big - living room and kitchen in one but the kitchen has new equipment and a bar facing the living room, one bathroom, two bedrooms with nice closets - one bedroom is a little bigger and has a really big storage area off to the side, which i guess both ppl share. For the price and location, it seems worth it!

that's good news, the photos in the housing package look good but i wasnt sure how accurate they were. i'll have to check it out in person when i get a chance.
also those appartments with the link on the previous page are by the schuylkill i think = further than 10 minute walk.
the only negative i heard about on campus is that internet is if-y at times and something about things not getting taken care of that a normal landlord would take care of ... but that was one persons opinion so i really hope to get more info at the reception in april
redruby 03-09-2005, 07:06 PM I just got the call from Dr. Callahan today, which was pretty surprising since I just interviewed last week. I really liked the school but am unsure about the cost vs. my state school. Anybody else feel the same way?

just wondering, what is the price for those?? I remember one of the students told me when I interviewed but I forgot. Oh and I'm most likely going to Jefferson next year too. Nice to meet u all. :D
hooniedee 03-10-2005, 06:11 PM The on campus housing fees for the three different buildings are listed here:
http://www.jefferson.edu/housing/fees.cfm
And does anyone know when is the earliest Jeff send out the finaid packages?
I've already done everything they've asked for: FAFSA, sent in mine and parents Tax Forms, the MPN, and the 3 online forms.

hooniedee,
The office told me "early spring." Can't be more specific than that but it shouldn't be too long.
-Liz
hooniedee 03-10-2005, 06:28 PM Thanks Liz for the info :) but "early spring" seems pretty vague. I'm going to stop by Jeff tommorrow and check out the housing and nearby apt buildings and I'll see if finaid can give us a more definate answer.
I have an AECOM interview next wk that I would cancel if I could be sure that Jeff would give me a pretty decent finaid package. I have a friend who is an MS2 with a 1/2 tuition scholarship. That'd be sooo nice..
lightnk102 03-11-2005, 01:41 PM anyone know when the financial aid packet comes? I've been accepted 2 weeks ago, and I've gotten the second-look invitation as well as the schedule for the upcoming school year, but nothing else. I'm anxious to have my information in before they start doling out the scholarship packages.
hooniedee 03-11-2005, 06:11 PM lightnk102, I was accepted a couple of wks before you but I got the finaid package actually the same time give or take a day that the second look invite and schedule arrived.
It might just be a few days more to wait. . . otherwise it won't hurt to call.

wait, do we have to submit the MPN before they will process aid? i thought that we got that whenever we decided where we would take our loans out??? i guess i better do that now. also, did those of you who have received your packages already do the online entrance interview? i can't seem to find it.

Here you go... they recommended this site somewhere on their financial aid page. I already took the online entrance interview. It was short and easy, especially if you have been working on this stuff already.
Happy interviewing!

I had no problems doing my entrance interview as well. I looked up the entrance interview with Wells Fargo and it did not have Jefferson listed as a school that you could select (at least for the page I found). If you are still unsure, however, I would just check with the office come Monday.
Nittany Lion, no problem, any time!!

I had an interivew with a student first and then a faculty member in teh afternoon. My student interview was VERY relaxed. I think that they have some questions that they have to ask because they fill out a form right after the interview is over (q's like why medicine, why Jefferson etc). Just be yourself and you should be just fine. My faculty interview was the same way. It was in the afternoon and as I recall, we talked about my home town and my family for most of time.
It seems like you are very interested in Jeff so I would just express that interest at some point and enjoy the day :D
The interview day is low stress as well. You have interviews with students, lunch, a tour, then faculty interviews and a wrap of session if you so choose. I beleive that Dr. Callahan sometimes comes to this session and there are students around so it may be worth sticking around for. If you stay, I think the day ends around 4 or 4:30 but don't hold me to that because I was there back in November and can't remember all the details.
Good luck and let us know how your day turned out :luck:
wends 03-13-2005, 08:18 AM my interview was fine, but it was really short. i felt really bad afterwards cause i travelled all that way and i guess i should have taken it by the horns more and talked more, but i was so surprised taht i just left. :o
Dr Turninkoff 03-14-2005, 07:34 AM I just called the office of financial aid because I was concerned that I wouldn't be processed soon since I just completed my MPN. Apparently, the MPN and online entrance interview (which will be updated soon on the website) are not required for initially processing your aid. I then asked when we could expect to hear about our aid packages, since it seems that some people have already received awards on this page. She told me that they haven't even started going through applications for the 2005/2006 year so it would be a while. When I asked about people that have already received aid packages, she assured me that nobody has. Just thought I'd pass it on since aid for me will determine whether or not I can go to Jefferson. Is anyone expecting anything more than just loans from them?
lightnk102 03-14-2005, 07:59 AM i was hoping for grants of some sort, but i'm not sure how often grants are doled out, or what the criteria is for grants (need-based? merit-based?). i don't know if i qualify for either need-based OR merit-based, but i'm hoping for grants anyways :)
Whether I go to Jefferson or not is going to be based on finaid also. Instead of trying to decide which med school to go to, I decided to roll the dice and let the financial packages decide. I'll consider it a sign from God. ;)
hooniedee 03-14-2005, 08:59 AM Dr Turninkoff, I did stop by the finaid office, Friday and they said the same thing. I misspoke earlier when I said I had gotten the "financial aid package" what I meant was finaid application package.
And to lightnk102, I think the majority of Jeff scholarships/grants are primarily need based only. There's a list of the criteria for each loans, grants and etc in the welcome packet they give out.
Nittany Lion 03-14-2005, 12:51 PM Clearly you all did something right during your interviews - any tips for a nervous chick who's interviewing there on Wednesday? I'd love to go to this school...
Liz
Definitely don't be nervous... it was totally low-stress and relaxed when I was there. There's a student interview first, which is basically just a chance to talk to a student and ask them questions about what life at Jefferson is like. Then, there is a "faculty interview"...but it turns out that mine was with a retired doc who had graduated from Jefferson in 1955!!! This interview was completely different from any of the other interviews I had at other schools. It was "closed file", meaning that he purposely hadn't read my application materials beforehand. When I got there, he said "I don't read any of the files before the interviews and I don't like to ask questions so...go ahead." I was a little thrown off for a minute, but I basically had to just give him the low-down of my application and tell him about myself without him asking specific questions. I know that sounds like it would be really nerve-racking, but it totally wasn't....it was actually made me feel more relaxed because I didn't feel like I had to "defend" any parts of my application. I just talked to him about the things I had done in undergrad and where I was from and stuff I said in my personal statement, and we just had a conversation about it. Then we talked about how medicine has changed since he was a med student and since he started practicing. It was actually really cool and it was a great interview experience.
Oh and just so you know, not all of the interviews will be like that... some are open file and some are closed. But either way, pretty much everyone I've talked to had a good experience there. Only one person I know had a somewhat antagonizing interviewer, but that was it.. and she didn't really want to go there anyway so who knows, maybe that showed. Just definitely convey your interest in Jefferson and you will have a great time. Good luck and let us know how it turns out!
davedavedave 03-15-2005, 02:41 PM did anyone else not get the housing packet yet?
nycmed8 03-15-2005, 02:57 PM me i got it...... but i am debating just getting a nearby off campus apartment and moving on in for the next 4 years....anyone else?
lightnk102 03-15-2005, 06:29 PM me i got it...... but i am debating just getting a nearby off campus apartment and moving on in for the next 4 years....anyone else?
i'm debating the same thing. right now, i'm leaning towards moving in off campus. i don't want to have to move twice, and i'm sure after the first year of on-campus housing, it gets stifling. besides, i don't think the buildings allow pets, do they?
since jefferson is right near washington square, i'd love to live in one of the little rowhomes (or anywhere along pine, so cute!). the victory building in the pamphlet looked like it had a bit more character than the rest, but the rental rates weren't listed, which tells me they're extraordinarily expensive.
rebeclette 03-15-2005, 07:06 PM Hi guys,
I'm a current jeff student so I thought I'd just weigh in on the housing. I live on campus, and I'm very happy with it. Its great to be so close to everything. Our internet isn't really iffy, i've had maybe 3-4 times all year where the internet was knocked out overnight, but Its free, and I've found the Jeff IT guys to be very helpful in responding to problems. When we moved in it was difficult to get them to respond to fix problems because there were so many people moving in at once, but now they respond quickly.
The biggest pluses for me are that I feel very safe, its all jeff students, and its also VERY quite, which was a big plus for me since when I'm stressed and its noisy I can't sleep. Orlowitz is a nice cement building, and I almost never hear my neighbors. And if people are being noisy, I feel that they would be more understanding than other neighbors because its all Jeff students and residents and they know what its like to have a test the next day. Plus the appartments, I think, are quite nice.
i hope that helps, Welcome to Jeff!
nycmed8 03-15-2005, 07:30 PM thanks for the info.... do students that move into the school housing tend to stay there for more than one year? Just curious.... the prices for the Victory building are indeed expensive.... anywhere from 875 to 1500 for a one bedroom, more for a 2 BR.
rebeclette 03-15-2005, 08:09 PM Just about everyone I've talked to is staying. In general from talking to people it seems that you can find nicer two bedrooms for about the same price or a little bit more in the area, but one bedrooms are harder to come by. Plus we just have to pay for electricity, so there isn't the added expense of water and stuff like dsl that you might have to pay for off campus.
nycmed8 03-16-2005, 08:00 AM thats great! thanks so much for the help rebeclette.... it seems that the on campus housing option is not a bad one.
brucecat 03-16-2005, 08:41 AM hey everyone, i just made the decision that i'm definitely going to jeff. i'm still waiting to hear from brown and bu, but i'd rather go to jeff anyways. on the housing question, i don't think that the on campus housing really offers a better deal than off-campus. especially the bigger apts, 2 and 3 bedrooms. you can find cooler places off campus for less money. for those looking, probably the best two places are philadelphiaweekly.com and philadelphia.craigslist.com. if anyone has questions about the different neighborhoods, feel free to ask. i've lived here a while and know the neighborhoods well.

If I end up at Jefferson, I think I'm probably going to take the same route you are. Jefferson is in such a great area that I'd like to be part of the neighborhood.
wends 03-16-2005, 04:25 PM hey guys, i just got the call from dean callahan!!!!
im so excited!
Dr Turninkoff 03-20-2005, 04:59 PM anyone NOT get the housing packet? maybe it's because I didn't send a deposit. i've was accepted around jan. 10. ??? i'm just waiting to send the deposit until I know whether or not i'm going there for sure.
iv03erson 03-20-2005, 08:41 PM im pretty sure ill be at jeff next year also.... its a great school and ive been in philly for the last 5 years or so, and i love it. plus, i got u2 tickets for october, so i cant really leave now can i?....
as far as housing goes.. those buildings are run by philadelphia management... and i live in a philadelphia management building now. if they run those buildings like they run mine, i would recommend living elsewhere. however, the dorms are remodeled, and pretty nice inside.
craigslist is definitely a good place to look for alternatives.
AthensBeth 03-20-2005, 08:55 PM Hey Nittany,
Sounds to me like we were interviewed by the same person! Was your interviewer a priest? Mine was, also graduated in 55 and is retired as a doctor. Maybe he wasn't wearing his collar the day he interviewed you. He has to be the same person because he prefaced my interview with exactly the same thing. I agree, he was really nice and didn't make me nervous at all. I hope I get a call from Dean Callahan soon! It may be delayed because of spring break next week.

I didnt send my deposit but I did get my housing packet. You might want to call and check it out.
krebse 03-21-2005, 09:07 AM I had my interview and it felt like it went well, I hope so because I loooooooved Jeff, and thanks to you all for the tips/words of encouragement - did anybody interview with a female doctor who's the director of the University Health Services? She seemed to like me, the interview seemed to flow well, but she was pretty hard to read - any thoughts? thanks

CalApplicant 03-21-2005, 09:37 AM Hey All,
It looks like I'll be attending Jefferson this fall and I was wondering if any of my future classmates will be coming from California/Bay Area too? I'm excited about starting med school at Jefferson but I'm worried about having to uproot my entire life and starting new all the way across the country. Has anyone out there made a cross-country move and would like to share some advice (i.e. what to take with you, how to ship all your stuff, how to find an apartment without seeing it first, transportation needs, etc.) I was also wondering when everyone will arrive there. According to one of the letters they sent me, registration starts August 1 so I'm guessing I'll have to be there before that so that I can move/settle in? How does registration work? Will there be events plan for the week of orientation?
Thanks everyone!!!
wends 03-21-2005, 10:01 AM thanks liz, im sure you'll here good news as well!
and calapplicant, im not from cali or the bay area, but i am from the west coast (vancouver!) i moved cross country for undergrad and it was fine....it was really refreshing to start new and see a different part of the country.
do we have to shell out $$ for the second look weekend? its the thick of my final exams, but i really dont want to miss it....... :o
i would like to go a week before school starts to get settled, and i would really like to be in an apartment near campus with some other ppl. but i have to get through the rest of school first, so much work!

Yep, sounds like the same guy! I thought he was such a sweetheart. Anyway, good luck and I'm sure you'll get the call any day now! :)
Blinky_1 03-21-2005, 12:33 PM Does anyone know what the website is to complete the entrance interview. The financial aid office is mailing me the packet but I don't want to wait. Thanks in advance! :D

My friend moved from San Diego to Boston, and all she brought were clothes and toiletries. She brought two large suitcases onto the plane with her, and shipped the rest. Bought furniture after she arrived. I think she considers her biggest mistake to be finding an apartrment without seeing it first. She ended up trapped in a one-year lease in an apartment that was too far from campus, with people she didn't like. I'd highly highly recommend that you get here a little earlier to find an apartment. In the case of Jefferson, you can probably just sign up for on-campus housing and avoid the hassle. If its a month-to-month lease on campus, you can live there until you find a permanent place. Personally, I like to settle in before classes start. If you're like that too, you might want to come end of June to find a place with a lease starting mid-July or so. This way, you have 2 weeks or more to unpack, find furniture, and get acquainted with the area.
davedavedave 03-25-2005, 04:48 PM just out of curiousity, does anyone know when we have to pass a drug test?
I have my Jefferson interview on March 30. I'm so nervous. Does anybody know if this interview is for a waitlist spot or do I have a chance to get accepted. If I get accepted, Jeff is where I will be headed next year. It's weird because I was notified back in January for a March 30th interview. Any thoughts?
AthensBeth 03-25-2005, 10:17 PM They made it clear when I interviewed that they don't interview for waitlist spots. When they interview, they always keep available spots open. That's why they waitlist people early on. I got invited in January for a March interview too, by the way, so I guess that's common for them.

you can get a student host but you have to foot the bill for getting there just like the interview.
AthensBeth 03-30-2005, 07:42 PM I interviewed on 3/16, and I got the call from Dr. Callahan today!! I loved Jeff when I visiting, and I'm so excited that I got in! Did anyone else hear today?
Beth
nycmed8 03-31-2005, 09:51 AM congrats Athens Beth! Sinxaritiria! ;-)
Does anyone have any opinions on this - i have been accepted to Jeff and just got an interview invite to NYMC.... worth it to go?
Thanks!
lightnk102 03-31-2005, 09:58 AM i just got my finaid forms yesterday and it says they're due April 1st!
salfrankador 03-31-2005, 09:59 AM AthensBeth, congrats on your acceptance!!
That's awesome that Dr. Callahan got back to you in such good time.
I was just wondering if any of you recent acceptances have gotten in off the waitlist.
I am currently on the "High-priority" waitlist right now, and even though they say it isn't ranked would anybody in-the-know have an idea about how many people they accept off this waitlist each year??? How about the timecourse of waitlist movement??
I loved everything about Jeff and would go there in a hearbeat. So, I would appreciate any info or advice that would help put my mind at ease as I continue to sit here at work staring at my telephone waiting for thatcall from Jeff.
thanks guys!
aingeal 03-31-2005, 10:48 AM have you sent them a letter of intent? i was waitlisted, sent a letter of intent, and received my acceptance within a week. this was back in january.
continuing to update and show interest is your best bet.
if you have questions about my letter of intent or anything else regarding your situation feel free to ask!
Dr Turninkoff 03-31-2005, 11:14 AM congrats Athens Beth! Sinxaritiria! ;-)
Does anyone have any opinions on this - i have been accepted to Jeff and just got an interview invite to NYMC.... worth it to go?
Thanks!
I wouldn't. I was accepted to both and while NYMC was nice in terms of location and facilities, I found Jefferson to be a far better school for the money (which is a lot in either case).
krebse 03-31-2005, 01:06 PM Beth you lucky dog...I interviewed with you on 3/16 and haven't heard - congratulations though - I loved it too and am crossing my fingers soooooo hard! I just called the office and they said that no decision's been made on me yet which means that my interviewer wasn't able to make it to the committee meeting this week I guess...the fact you got in gives me hope though! They obviously weren't just telling us all that we weren't only interviewing for waitlist spots
Liz
AthensBeth 03-31-2005, 02:25 PM I've got my fingers crossed for you! They meet Fridays, I heard somewhere. So maybe your interviewer will make that one and you'll here something Friday. Let us all know if you do!

if they meet Fridays, and everyone was off for Spring break last week, how did you hear yesterday?
AthensBeth 04-01-2005, 03:47 AM Hmmm, maybe my interviewer was able to meet the Friday after our interview day. They made the decision then but didn't send it out? I don't know.
lightnk102 04-01-2005, 07:40 AM i interviewed on a wednesday, and my interviewer was 10 minutes late to our interview because he was at an admissions committee meeting that ran late making decisions on the last batch of applicants. maybe they meet on different days each week?
redruby 04-01-2005, 07:51 AM With this financial aid stuff, I just completed the entrance interview. Is the office supposed to send more paperwork?
vcatz 04-01-2005, 08:11 AM The Jefferson Ad Com meets on Wed of each week. Dr. Calahan calls accepted applicants after those meetings.
krebse 04-01-2005, 08:27 AM nice, thanks guys
nycmed8 04-01-2005, 09:20 AM I wouldn't. I was accepted to both and while NYMC was nice in terms of location and facilities, I found Jefferson to be a far better school for the money (which is a lot in either case).
thanks a lot for the input....i kind of got that impression, but wasn't entirely sure.
wends 04-01-2005, 11:33 AM hey guys, im a bit confused about the health form
1. when is it due?
2. do all the immunizations have to be new? or are they asking for a history of immunizations
3. and which is our program? it didnt say medicine, just nursing and a whole bunch of other stuff that i dont htink applied to me.
thanks
vcatz 04-01-2005, 12:05 PM I had similar questions so I called the student health office. They forgot to put Jefferson Medical College on the student health form. The lady in the office said that they have a major problem keeping track of all of the students in the allied health programs that they re-did the forms to include what program the student is in. Unfortunately, until I called they did not realize that they left JMC off of the list. She said just write JMC class of 2009 on the front of the form.
I think the forms are due in July - not sure of the actual date.
As for the immunizations I think they want new shots or serology demonstrating that you have antibodies for the vaccines they list.
wends 04-01-2005, 02:32 PM thanks vcatz.....ugh i hate getting shots!!! but i think im going to get my physical done and over with so they have a record and i can get my doc to fill it out for other med schools.......
anyways, i cant get my key yet, what is the information that they wanted us to see??
brucecat 04-03-2005, 09:18 AM Hey, is anyone going to the reception on April 14 & 15th??? I personally will definitely be going. What do you think the appropriate dress attire is?

i'm definitely going too and i'm also wondering about the dress attire - i'm thinking its probably along the lines of dressy casual?
davedavedave 04-03-2005, 07:15 PM i'm definitely going too and i'm also wondering about the dress attire - i'm thinking its probably along the lines of dressy casual?
whats dressy casual? suit and no tie? or khaki's and button down?
lightnk102 04-03-2005, 07:54 PM whats dressy casual? suit and no tie? or khaki's and button down?
i imagine its no sneakers/sweats/babyT's (or just no t-shirts for the guys since i imagine you won't be donning a baby T). i was thinking jeans and a nice sweater.
afr0dite01 04-03-2005, 09:18 PM I was going to wear something nicer for the reception cause it was such a nice invitation (maybe like a skirt). But I think for Friday I definitely won't go so nice. (Jeans or Khakis and a sweater)
aingeal 04-03-2005, 09:22 PM i was curious about attire, too. i would go for pants other than jeans though - especially for the dinner thursday night. nice pants and a button up for guys are safe.
yancantcook 04-04-2005, 01:11 AM i'll be there to see you guys on that friday for the clinical tours...however, i wont be in the 05 class as I deferred my admission until 2006. however, i'm still excited to meet everyone in the 05 class and get a feel of the student body.
wends 04-04-2005, 07:29 AM i cant make it to the second look cause im low on dough and because i have an exam that day and i dont want to make it up in may..........but i hope everyone has a great time and tell me what happened!! :D
rdavid 04-04-2005, 11:18 AM JMC Admissions said to wear "business casual" attire for the admitted students day. Specifically, they said no jeans. Business casual consists of slacks and button down shirt/polo shirt for guys and mini skirts for girls (just kidding, I have no idea what consists of business casual for women). I also assume that this means no sneakers.
aingeal 04-10-2005, 10:40 PM thanks for getting the official word!
did anyone else receive 3 identical frat emails? = woops. also, scheduling the open house for a popular college graduation weekend isn't great either; not that it's likely to affect me ...
afr0dite01 04-11-2005, 05:01 AM Yeah I definitely got a ton of the medical fraternity emails. Oh well.
Who is all going this weekend to second look?
susan96 04-11-2005, 07:45 AM Count me in...still haven't figured out what to wear though. Not in the mood to be business-y :p
yancantcook 04-11-2005, 09:36 AM is everyone here going for both days of second look or just the clinilcal tour day?
i am from the philly area and may just goto the clinical tours day instead of the dinner the night before since i'll have to skip lab to goto that.
mtndoll 04-11-2005, 09:39 AM Hey, i'm new to this thread...but i'm most prolly goint to jeff next year.
I'm attending the second look but I live in NC and they still havent found me a host :(
anyone else on the same boat?
rdavid 04-11-2005, 09:51 AM Flying up from RDU (in NC) Thursday after work, thus not going to the dinner on Thursday (I think you have to be more dressed up for that then on Friday). For those of you going to second look this Thursday, just out of curiosity, who's staying with student hosts? i'm staying at one of the co-ed medical frat houses, so that should definitely be interesting haha. see everyone on thursday!
mtndoll 04-12-2005, 09:01 PM I'll certainly be there on Thursday. But they STILL havent found me a host! But in any case, I'm kind of excited about Jeff.
rdavid, you're from NC right? I've been checking the unc/ecu thread 40 times a day...I interviewed at unc in october, still havent heard a word...
rdavid 04-13-2005, 09:36 AM What are most of ya'll doing about housing? I got another letter from the Jeff Housing department encouraging the on-campus apartments. Do we get to see these on Friday? Any advice?
lightnk102 04-13-2005, 09:54 AM i'm holding off on sending in a housing application until later. i didn't read the fine print too closely, but i didn't want to commit myself to a full-year lease of on-campus housing without seeing all theother options out there. unless on-campus housing is month-to-month. anyone know?

the on-campus housing is a year lease but you can send it in now anyway - you don't commit to anything until they actually find you housing. if you send it now, you'll be one of the first offered housing - once they find you something, then you can say whether you want that or not.
krebse 04-16-2005, 12:31 AM Finally, I can legitimately add my name to this thread - I just got that glorious call today and I am definitely coming to Jeff this fall or next! Originally, I planned to defer, but I'm having second thoughts now...still not sure though...anyone know about defering, Yan, didn't you say you're deferring? Mind if I ask your reason and what you had to do to request it? I still can't quite believe this is real, I'm just so, so happy and relieved...hope you all had a great time at the second look, I couldn't have afforded the trip even if I had heard earlier, so oh well...anybody know about how far Jeff is from PCOM? Also, no one ever touched back on the needing a car for years 3 and 4, is this true?

wends 04-16-2005, 11:44 AM congrats liz!!! i know you've been wanting this one for a long time now! :D
dmk724 04-16-2005, 01:05 PM Finally, I can legitimately add my name to this thread - I just got that glorious call today and I am definitely coming to Jeff this fall or next!
Liz
Congratulations on getting in! If you'd like to defer, call/email Grace Hershmann. She's very understanding and will be happy to talk to you about making the decision and what to do if you end up deferring.
You could probably get along without a car during 3rd and 4th year. If you end up doing a rotation out at Geisinger or Pittsburgh, you could probably carpool with someone.
Jefferson is kind of far from PCOM (at least in my mind). PCOM is in the western part of the city, along City Line Avenue. It's not far from St. Joe's University. Jefferson is Center City, so it's probably around 10-15 miles away. It's probably accessible by SEPTA, though.
krebse 04-16-2005, 01:12 PM thanks guys...I'm going to miss my Mazda...I have a friend that will be attending PCOM this fall and we were considering trying to live together, but I really want to be within a 5 mnutes walk of campus and she doesn't want to be farther than a couple minutes drive, so I'll just give up on that idea right now! DMK, how difficult is it to get into the coed frat? The living situation is exactly what I'm looking for...

aingeal 04-20-2005, 10:07 AM I went all the way to page 8 to retrieve this thing, but I think we should make an attempt to keep all Jefferson conversation here since it's the oldest and longest and most informative thread so far.
so how did everyone find the reception this past weekend?
rdavid 04-20-2005, 10:23 AM First, I am going to state that I love Jefferson and am looking forward to school there. Now, about the past weekend. I was unimpressed with the day in general. Too much talk about things we have either heard about already (financial aid) or things that were insignificant (how to pick your rotations for 3rd and 4th year). I wish they would have focused more on descriptions of classes/labs for the first two years and possibly a tour of the labs or apartments. Also, the clinial tour kind of sucked and consisted of the doc basically teaching a class with not much a tour. That said, I thought the international opportunity part was interesting.
If you have any questions I may be able to answer some questions, I am a first year. I am not sure about the second look weekend and how it went because I didn't attend this year or last. As for general stuff on classes and labs I can answer most of your questions.
AmieJ5757 04-20-2005, 10:52 AM Hey I visited Jefferson not knowing what to expect, but I loved it. I got in in January, and I am so excited!! :D One of my friends told me about this site. I'm in New Orleans -- graduating Tulane in a month. I'm sad to leave NOLA, but I have a good feeling about Philli. It has major culture, and I love that!
I am also interested in the medical fraternity. The living situation (and rent) sounds SUPERB!! I am graduating on the day that they have open house. Does anyone know anything about the co-ed one??
I can't wait to meet all of yall!
rdavid 04-20-2005, 12:16 PM If you have any questions I may be able to answer some questions, I am a first year. I am not sure about the second look weekend and how it went because I didn't attend this year or last. As for general stuff on classes and labs I can answer most of your questions.
Thanks 222, but I just wanted to get a better feel for the buildings/campus and life in general. Simple stuff like where is the gym, where do students eat lunch, what amount of time do you spend actually interacting with patients during your first couple years, were all topics that were not addressed. I guess I do kind of understand them trying to highlight stuff like rotations and international opportunities because alot of people there were still deciding about jeff. But, for those of us that had already decided, the whole day was kind of boring.
aingeal 04-20-2005, 01:15 PM I agree, I would have appreciated more talks given by students -- nobody was really paying attention when students were speaking during lunch.
And I would rethink financial aid being first thing in the morning (= ) and so long. They should maybe use that time to talk about scholarship opportunities.
Seeing apartments and learning more about the first year curriculumn and opportunities during M1 would have been great, too.
However, I did enjoy the friendly atmosphere, which is, for me, one of Jeff's biggest draws.

I can answer one of those questions at least. The gym is basically a floor below the area we had the reception and lunch at second look day. We saw it when we were on our tour on interview day.
I can say one thing about 2nd look day however. Could they have fed us anymore? If I were choosing on food, I would definitely pick Jeff.

I was one of the 1st years helping out at second look, and I can understand where you're coming from. The problem is, most of what you want to know depends on the individual student. I eat lunch in the student lounge, but I also live off campus. Other people go home, and some people don't eat lunch at all. There are 3 mandatory clinical office visits during your first year, but, again, some people have a lot more patient exposure (I know of someone who's been out to JeffHOPE 8 times now), and a few people opt to have less (especially if they're married and have kids, etc). Med school, in many ways, is the exact opposite of college - the basic science curriculum is standardized between students to the point where you don't get to choose your classes or what time you go to class, but your experience outside the classroom is very individual. There isn't much of that universal "college experience" that everyone talks about in undergrad.
There probably would have been more student talks if second look day didn't overlap with so many things - diversity week, final exams, end of the year stuff, preparing for Step I, etc. Since all student groups are student-run, everyone was really busy. I did think that it was a shame that they made Dr. McManus talk about JeffMentors when everyone was focussed on eating lunch - it's a really good program, and Dr. McManus is a great faculty advisor. I was also surprised that they didn't have more talks about things like JeffHOPE, JeffYES, JeffMOMs, JeffELECT, Move for Health, SNMA, etc, but they probably ran into time and space constraints. Plus, that's what orientation is for, anyhow.
Hope that helps!
HeavyA 04-20-2005, 07:58 PM Hi guys. I was wondering if anyone who is going to be living off-campus has had any experience with Philadelphia Management (the realty company). I found a few of their apartment buildings that I wanted to look at, so I e-mailed two of their leasing agents a few days ago. I still haven't heard back from them. I just wondered if anyone else has had any experience with them, either positive or negative. I am sort of rethinking living in one of their buildings if this is the kind of service they give their residents. Thanks for any feedback.
Kikinin 04-20-2005, 08:32 PM Hi guys,
My name is Olga C Nin, but everyone calls me Kiki. I am from Puerto Rico and I currently live in Miami. I am very excited about this coming August but I agree that during the interview day they didn't talk much about class schedule or showed us the labs. Anyone knows how many students per cadaver for anatomy? What is a tipical day like? What are the hours of class time, labs or meeting times?

hi there,
how was the gym at jeff?
does jeff have a pool to use? basketball courts? squash?
etc?
thanks!
wends 04-21-2005, 01:18 PM just got my housing package today.......is there anything in phili that is cheaper than the $540 for the three bedrooms? i like the residences, but I'd like to live off campus and share an apartment with ppl........or is the three bedroom the cheapest there can be?
dmk724 04-21-2005, 02:07 PM Hi guys,
My name is Olga C Nin, but everyone calls me Kiki.
Hi -
Just so everyone knows, student tour guides are NOT allowed to bring people into the anatomy lab. The course coordinator for anatomy has a rule that anyone who doesn't have a legitimate reason to be in the cadaver lab (i.e. as an anatomy student, as a 4th year TA, or teaching the course) cannot be allowed into the lab, even under supervision. It's out of respect to the cadavers who donated their bodies, and to their families. Plus, some people aren't prepared to go through the lab, so it's not fair to ask them to go in. The histology lab, while not off limits, is very boring - everyone locks their microscope and slides in cabinets, so there's nothing to see.
6 students per cadaver, divided into teams of 3. Each group switches off dissection session, and then comes in to teach the other group what they dissected. You need about 3 students per dissection session, to help flip the cadavers onto their stomachs/backs, lift up the legs, etc.
There is no typical class schedule. You receive a schedule at the beginning of each block that details your day-by-day class schedule. There are some days where you start at 10, and finish by 12, and other days where you start at 8, and your last lecture ends at 5 or 5:30. You might also have lab from 8-12 or 1-5, and small group around twice a month, although that also depends. Generally, your lecture schedule will be heaviest right after an exam, and gradually lighten up right before the next exam. You have an exam every month or so. Your schedule is probably not the same from week to week, which was a big transition from college, where your weekly rhythm stays the same throughout the semester.
Hope this helps! Good luck, and hope you all have smooth transitions to med school! :)
lightnk102 04-22-2005, 07:32 AM are there syllabi handed out to study from, with the info condensed? or do most students study from the textbooks?
mtndoll 04-22-2005, 07:51 AM I asked one of the first year students at jeff and she told me that they post the lecture materials online and one of the profs at second look said they will be distributing (at least the anatomy) lecture slides and lecture notes during the first class in a big binder to all students free of charge (which i think is pretty cool.)
This is what the first-year student told me:
"Yes, all lecture materials are posted online or distributed out to students by the faculty. And it doesn't cost you anything. I think that you're thinking of back notes, which can be purchased - I don't know how much they cost, though. Front notes are now free if you agree to scribe at least one lecture per block, I think."
AS FOR SYLABI: Anatomy is the ONLY course that doesn't give you a formal sylabus but all lecture materials are posted online and student notes are posted online. I heard that for this falls entering class there will be a sylabus for Anatomy, not positive about this though. BUY NETTER'S AND NETTER'S FLASHCARDS--> THESE ARE KEY.
FOR ALL OTHER CLASS BLOCKS THERE ARE COMPLETE CONDENSED SYLABI. The sylabi are complete with basically everything you need to know. The only books that you may want to get are BRS (Board Series Review) study guides because these give you questions similar to whats on our exams. There are also some books that are "suggested" because they give extra background info that may help some people get a better handle on difficult concepts. STUDENT NOTE SERVICE, is a great part of Jeff and is posted online for students to look over notes completed by fellow students. We also have "Discussion Boards" where we post exam study guides, jokes, relavent articles, ect.
krebse 04-22-2005, 11:14 AM I'm yet to recieve a big old envelope full of info, but I've been trying super hard to get info on Frat living (particularly the coed one) and coming up empty - anybody have any info? How do we apply for it? When do they typically let newbies move in? How hard to get is it? thanks!
Liz
davedavedave 04-22-2005, 12:37 PM do they also have mp3's of the lectures? this would very nice... to have the lecture slides and the audio of the lectures freely available.
im assuming the gym at jeff is fine since there were so many frat guys that were completely jacked.

The gym is ok. They have a weight room, aerobics room, cardio room, pool, and a gym....im not sure about squash. It seems kind of small but I'm not sure how busy it gets. Im just excited they have a pool.
For those that want info on the frats, I think theyre having rush the weekend of May 21st. If you got the emails from them, you might want to email them with questions. If you didnt, then you can pm me cause I have their email addresses.
susan96 04-23-2005, 11:05 AM I have a question about the financial aid process. I filled everything out, including the MPN, so what will happen next? Do they just offer me a loan amount, and then I get to decide whether I want to take it or not? I'm just wondering because I am still not sure if I am going to Jefferson, so I'm getting a little freaked out that this is going to bind me to going.
dmk724 04-23-2005, 04:01 PM do they also have mp3's of the lectures? this would very nice... to have the lecture slides and the audio of the lectures freely available.

Yes - they post free mp3s of the lectures. The people in charge of the mp3 recorder are really diligent about recording them. The only heart stopping moment this year has come when a lecturer swung his arm around and knocked the recorder onto the floor. The lecture still recorded fine, though.
Those "completely jacked" frat guys aren't actually real students here...we just hired them for second look day to attract students to come here.
Just kidding. I haven't heard any complaints about the gym, though, so I'm sure it's fine. If you really hate it, there are other gyms around Center City that you could go to, and might not be that expensive.

afr0dite01 04-26-2005, 04:43 PM we have summer reading!
I think its funny too. Ive never had summer reading in my life. Oh well. I read anyway in the summer. :p
AthensBeth 04-26-2005, 05:01 PM We have summer reading? They haven't sent me anything about this.
I had summer reading once in AP English in high school, and I think I only read the ones that interested me. Sorry Thomas Hardy.
Dr Turninkoff 04-26-2005, 05:25 PM my financial aid info is now available on banner. unfortunately, it is what i expected. it says something like, "Your estimated cost of attendance is 57,xxx dollars. You have been awarded 42,xxx dollars in aid" no institutional aid at all. 42k a year in stafford loans. it's too bad, i really wanted to go there, but i guess i sort of knew this was coming.
susan96 04-26-2005, 05:59 PM I don't read as much as I should, but amazingly, I have already read this book. Random
lightnk102 04-26-2005, 08:05 PM was it jefferson that gives carrels in the library so each student gets their own private assigned carrel?

davedavedave 04-27-2005, 12:45 PM do u know if we are gonna have any other summer "work"? will they send us material to review? i heard of some schools doing this.

Summer Reading? Haven't had that since 12th grade, ;) but that's cool. I heard going to med school's a lot like going back to highschool anyway...Anyone know what this book's all about??
What kind of aditional work would you be talking about? I've not heard about this at all!!
I am a current first year at Jeff looking for a female roommate. I could either keep the two bedroom I have in Barringer which you could move into or move off campus. There are some luxury buildings nearby but they are more pricey. There's the Cosmopolitan which would be about $1775 a month divided by two and there's 1500 Locust which has a rooftop pool, fitness center, etc. that starts at about $2150 a month. Both buildings have 24 hour doormen, maintenance, etc.
I am social and friendly but not a party person. I'm 24 years old. I have several good friends here but they are either married or living in one bedrooms and don't want to live in a two bedroom, which is why I have not yet found a roommate.
If you are interested in speaking with me, e-mail me at inagailm@aol.com. I don't really go on SDN much.
Thanks and hope to hear from you!
mtndoll 04-30-2005, 08:20 AM I'm obviously not from a very wealthy family....I did not expect much but I got my fin aid package from jeff a couple of days ago...54K in loans
I expected it but I really hoped that they would give me some money...I dont know why I hoped but oh well. I really wanted to go to jeff but I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to pay back 220K plus my college loans. I talked to my parents and they told me they are not really going to help. (Well they said they'd pray for me and that they'll email me for emotional support  )
In any case, I've been depressed for over 4 days. I really dont know what to do anymore or what to think or how to act. I dont even know why i'm posting this...I just thought some of you might want to offer me some encouragement or some words of consolation coz i'm seriously contemplating suicide at this point.
vcatz 04-30-2005, 09:12 AM Have most of you receved your financial aid info? I had all of the paperwork complete by early March and have not heard anything.

dude...seriously...not to belittle your suicidal thoughts, but really, is your lot so bad? YOU GOT IN TO MEDICAL SCHOOL!!! AT A SCHOOL THAT YOU WOULD REALLY LIKE TO ATTEND!!! YOU'RE BEING OFFERED ENOUGH LOANS TO COVER THE ENTIRE COST!!! My EFC from my FAFSA was $3000 or so, but I'm certain I'm going to be in the same boat you are right now, with $50,000 in current personal debt (much of which I'm going to have to keep paying off while I'm in med school - private loans are a bitch but they got me where I am today) to pile on top of whatever we accrue over the next four years. Think about how many people would KILL to put themselves a quarter of a million dollars in debt in order to become a physician. Think about how many physicians you know of, any specialty, that are living paycheck to paycheck. There's a difference between crabbing about not being paid what you're worth and having malpractice insuarance suck you dry and actually not making enough money to live comfortably - I don't know a single doc that doesn't live comfortably...Again, I don't want to make you feel worse, but you've got to put things in perspective a bit more effectively - making statements about how the prospect of insane amounts of debt are putting you on the verge of suicide is really, really not cool...most of us will be your classmates next year, don't start out with everyone thinking you're lame :)

but knowing that I'll be in so much debt at the age of 26 is kinda overwhelming...
krebse 04-30-2005, 10:16 AM yeah, well, I'll be there when I'm 28...so will countless number of other people...it could just be soooooooo much worse
rdavid 05-02-2005, 09:10 AM You could always consolidate your loans when you graduate. It will then take about 30 years to pay off and you'll be paying much more interest, but your payments will be a few hundred dollars cheaper each month then if you tried to pay them off in 10-15 years.
I never got anything about the summer reading. Are we tested on it?
aingeal 05-02-2005, 11:24 AM I never got anything about the summer reading. Are we tested on it?
We need to read it for our medical ethics class: "Doctors in the 21st Century" or something like that.
shawty ya'head 05-02-2005, 11:35 AM there will be a final exam immediately after registration on the summer reading.
only number 2 pencils and graphing calculators allowed. there will be no breaks for bathroom use - unless a dire need to drop a number 2 is expressed.
g'luck
AmieJ5757 05-03-2005, 11:50 AM I picked up the summer reading today. It looks good... and it's about an Hmong immigrant family from Laos... I'm backpacking southeast asia this summer and am going to visit there :) I just think that's cool!
VCatz -- I haven't heard anything from fin aid yet either... hopefully I will soon... Good luck to ya! Let me know if you hear anything...
krebse 05-03-2005, 12:23 PM I've read it - it is good...I personally think it should be mandatory reading for everyone, not just future docs...

Everyone says it's great!! I can't wait to start it!!
AthensBeth 05-09-2005, 06:57 AM Has anyone looked into the school's health insurance plan yet? I can't find anything in detail about it on the website-- just that it costs 2,079 a year.
lightnk102 05-09-2005, 08:37 AM hey all.
i've been debating for a long time between jeff and bu, and i think i've decided to come to jeff. does anyone know whether its too late to send in the housing form? i'm considering living off campus as well since the neighborhood is so great. is there a housing online bulletin board for current jeff students who have a room opening up?
AmieJ5757 05-09-2005, 10:02 AM There is something if you go onto pulse.jefferson.edu and sign on... they have JMC forums and there are posts up from and for people looking for roomies... GOOD LUCK! :)
I'm going up to Philly in a couple of days to look around! Can't wait!!

It shouldn't be too late to hand in the form. I was told I won't hear from them until May or June when rooms become available. I would get it in as soon as possible though, becomes rooms are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. (Keep in mind all first years whose permanent residence is outside of Philadelphia (check the contract for specifics) are guaranteed housing, so don't stress too much!)
Good luck!
Hey everyone,
I am also going to be at Jefferson in the fall! Can't wait to get started! I am going to be living in the student housing! I'm sending in all the forms this week! :)
See you all soon!

Amie, thanks for the info on that book...how do you like new orleans? I just declined my tulane acceptance, it broke my heart coz i loved the city and the school...but oh well...I belong to jeff!
absps1983 05-10-2005, 05:18 PM hey guys, i'm going to be at jeff in august too!
a couple quick questions... i got accepted just over 4 weeks ago, and aside from the actual acceptance all i have received is a to-do checklist and the IT packet. i haven't gotten any financial aid info or housing stuff. also, i registered right away for my campus key but it doesn't work. when did you guys receive financial aid/housing info? can anyone else sign into pulse?
AmieJ5757 05-10-2005, 05:49 PM Tell me about how rough it is to say no to NOLA, I can't even fathom that I have to leave new orleans...I finished my finals yesterday and I've been out partyin' in the city all day... I'm gonna miss it so much but I think Philly will be really cool...
I love nola, but ask any local... it gets under your skin... i feel the need to get out before I'm stuck... I can always come back... LOVE THE PLACE SOOOOOOOO MUCH... It's like a drug -- and i sound psychotic (appologies to any new JMC classmates... I swear I'm relatively normal)... maybe we'll all take a trip down here after block exams next year... Philly has SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH to offer... can't turn that down....
My campus key works...
Sorry to everyone... I've had quite a few cocktails ..... i swear my next post will be sober...
Cant wait to meet y'all.. going up to Philly to visit tomrorow! :) SO EXCITED!

Hey everyone, I was just there today visiting Philly/Jefferson... can I just say, the city is so beautiful at this time of year...the streets around Jeff have lots of pretty trees lining them, and I walked from there down to Independence Hall/Liberty Bell (about 5 blocks away)... soooo pretty... I'm getting excited! Hope everyone else is too!

ABSPS1983... WELCOME AND CONGRATS!! you should call and check on your campus key not working because it's helpful in the fin aid app process... there's also a JMC forum on pulse with lots of info about off campus housing...They sent me on campus housing info a few weeks after I was accepted (in Jan)... I'm sure you'll get yours too... But if you want to do that I'd suggest turning the form back around to them ASAP... I had all of my fin aid stuff in by March 1 (with the exception of my parent's tax forms which got there shortly thereafter) and just yesterday got my fin aid package (it's not the prettiest but I'm taking what I can get... NO help from Jefferson, but I was kinda expecting that) I need to come up with about 18,000 in private loans to meet the projected budget... But, I heart Jeff so it's worth it ... Get your stuff in ASAP and you'll have a better shot at any sort of Jeff help on your package...Good luck with all that!

My campus key works for Pulse, but I can't access Jeff Mail. I've sort of ignored the problem so far. Are people getting important communications in their jeffmail that isn't being sent via snail mail or to their outside email accounts?
absps1983 05-11-2005, 07:48 AM thanks AmieJ, i think i will call them today about the financial aid info and campus key issue. yesterday my housing packet came, but i actually just secured an off-campus apartment.

good luck talking to jefferson IT. the woman i just spoke to in that department copped some major attitude, gave me garbled directions on how to fix it (contradicting herself multiple times), and then talked to me like I was a 6 year old when I asked for clarification.
but. my email now works.
shawty ya'head 05-11-2005, 08:39 AM so how do you fix it?
i had the same issue...along with other social issues that i will not discuss on this open forum...PM me if you'd like me to inundate you with my problems..
AthensBeth 05-11-2005, 08:57 AM I've heard from current Jeff students that the IT dept really sucks. There's even an initiative/club you can join for improving IT there. I've been lucky so far (with my mail and campus key), but if ever have the experiences you guys are having, I'll definitely join!

i'm not sure if you had the same problem as i did, but if you did, here it is:
PROBLEM: campus key/password worked on pulse portal, but could not access email (gave "incorrect campus key/password combination" message)
SOLUTION:
1. log into pulse with your campus key and password
2. click on 'change password'
3. enter your campus key. enter the same thing for the three fields:
old pw, new pw, confirm new pw (assuming you want your ss# to remain your password)
4. give the server 15 minutes to refresh its list and synchronize
5. log into pulse and click JeffMail.
nycmed8 05-11-2005, 09:37 AM thanks lightnk!! that totally worked.... and now i am reading email from way back in april :)
Wow! Thanks for the info on the e-mail. I was wondering why it wasn't working. Changed my password, and now I finally can get into my e-mail. It is awesome!
can't wait to start school! :)
AmieJ5757 05-12-2005, 10:11 AM Ok i'm such a nerd... i've been walking around philly all day... wanted a place to sit down so i came to the Jeff Library... and my key and password worked to get on the computers... I feel like a student already :) Like I said, I'm a nerd...
Anyway, the people here have been amazing. I went out to this bar "monks" with some M1's last night... great atmosphere... I'm getting soooooo excited!!
shawty ya'head 05-12-2005, 10:44 AM thats tight!

lightnk102 05-13-2005, 03:55 PM i just withdrew from the last of my schools. so... i guess this means i'm going to jefferson for sure. it's a little scary. i've been pretty sure i was going to jefferson for the past week or so, but actually writing that letter and withdrawing gives me this strange melodramatic feeling of a door slamming shut in my life forever. my mom says i have a 'fear of commitment' and that it pervades all aspects of my life. but, i guess proximity to slopes for snowboarding wasn't a good enough reason to go to BU. especially since I liked Jeff better.
but it looks like i'll be seeing you |
