I'm fairly certain I'll be at UM, but haven't received anything regarding classes etc. yet. Are you at the Jackson campus? flash 02-05-2005, 12:38 PM Nice to meet you all. I am probably going to U of M too, but waiting to hear on scholarships until final decision. Have heard nothing since invite. Anyone apply for a scholarship? Heard anything? deuist 02-05-2005, 01:11 PM I've been accepted to Miami as well (Boca campus). I haven't heard anything with regards to orientation or enrollment requirements (e.g., immunizations). I'm about to apply for a scholarship; I'll let you know what happens. the1111gal 02-05-2005, 03:24 PM I got a letter via snail mail regarding a scholarship (20k/yearly) dated 1/12/05. I applied for it very early though...my guess is back in november or december...And I was also accepted very early, 10/15/04...because I interviewed on the first day, I think...Hope the info helps, not sure how things work with scholarships regarding timing for them. 4EverTrue 02-07-2005, 01:38 PM I will be at the Jackson campus. I have met a lot of the medical students already and am impressed by their clinical knowledge and skills! Since I'm already here in Miami (having moved from Boston), I have had the chance to meet a few attendings and residents, and from what I've seen, Miami allows for great teamwork and DEFINITE involvement--even as first years. I am excited to be at such a diverse place with tons of opportunities--clinically, culturally, and research-wise. By the time we finish here, I bet you we will all be fluent in Spanish! or at least getting there!! Congrats everyone, no matter when you heard--or where you're from--or even what you're stats or extracurriculars are/were, we've all worked so hard to get to this point, so we all deserve pats on the back and high fives! Now, we're in the same boat...and should be ready for teamwork! This is going to be undoubtedly one of the toughest years of our lives, but as long as we support one another, we can all survive! Congrats people. 4EverTrue NoNews 02-08-2005, 04:25 PM Put me down for Boca! :D  flash 02-09-2005, 02:14 PM http://www.mededu.miami.edu/Admissions I don't remember how I came across it, but has some information on where to live, reading assignments for last year's class b4 they started school and a biochem refresher thing. Nothing you can really use now, but get's me excited just surfing through it. kenmc3 02-14-2005, 10:07 AM Hello everyone, I will be going to Miami this fall (Jackson Campus) and I haven’t heard anything yet either. I don’t know why but I have been dawdling on my scholarship application – so I plan on submitting that tonight. I called the admissions office the other day to check on when classes would be starting. They said the first week of August but they don’t know the exact date yet. - Ken dradams 02-18-2005, 08:34 AM I'll be one of the Boca people also. :D old macdonald 02-18-2005, 09:11 AM I'll be one of the Boca people also. :D Count me in as one of the mdphd dorks at Jackson! Looking forward to meeting most of you in August at the Jackson campus (those of you who I didn't meet during interviews). I think those of you who choose Miami will be glad you did - apart from the whole med school package, we have 78-degree weather in February! (I spent today studying at the beach  ). Filled out scholarship app in mid December. dradams 03-03-2005, 10:50 AM Good point Flash. Thanks. Hey, 5K is still 5K. I'm probably going to get nada. Arsenic 03-04-2005, 12:18 PM does anyone know if there's anything else we need to do, like for lenders? Just trying to get everything ready... and excited for the beginning. Last thing, NFlow or any current med students, how's orientation like? opportunities to bond? thanks enough from me :) The financial aid office will mail you a packet in the next couple of months with the forms you need to fill out. Thats when you pick the lender. I chose the University of Miami as my lender because there are no origination/processing fees with them, all the loan money goes to your tuition bill and then to you. Some may want to choose the same lender they had in undergrad though to keep it continuous, I didnt really care since I'm going to consolidate the educational loans after I finish med school anyways. Orientation is definitely awesome, PLENTY of time to bond. Last year it was 3 days, Thursday - Saturday. Thursday and Friday you're in school and you meet all the deans, important ppl, upperclassmen, take ID photos, etc... Then Saturday is games day! You go to the undergrad campus and your whole class is involved in activities like tug of war and stuff versus the upperclassmen. That day you also find out what academic society you've been assigned to which is a pretty big deal. Sometime that weekend there is also a deans dinner on Key Biscayne where you mingle with all your new classmates, deans and faculty. Its a lot of stuff to do in 3 days but its awesome! Welcome to Miami! Nflow 03-04-2005, 10:58 PM Dr. Hinkley emailed today about an open house at the Boca campus. Just wanted to throw that out there. CAPT flash 03-07-2005, 10:38 AM Don't know anything for a fact, but I'm a local bar guy too most of the time. Miami is big enough of a city to have many types of "scenes" I would think. I found just regular bars when I interviewed and spent the weekend. It's not all clubs like you see on TV. jcoola 03-07-2005, 08:10 PM Wish I could join and meet those attending the open house at the Boca Campus, but I'll be attending UF's Dance Marathon that weekend. I am actually really really wanting to go to Miami Medical School and would really appreciate any help. I am an out-of stater, but have a very decent GPA...i think! I am planning on taking the mcat this april..but don't know if my best work will be showcased since I haven't had much time to study. Any tips that could help would be apreciated. I want to go visit...but I dont think they give visits?? When should i apply by? Are they rolling? Does it hurt a lot to apply later...or does early app help a lot? I have taken all the pre-req classes...what other classes should I take? I am not a science major. ps. Congrats to everyones acceptances! Thanks! 4EverTrue 03-31-2005, 01:06 PM I'll try to answer a few questions about the application end on things...(I'm gonna start in the fall.) Sidenote: For all those starting in the fall as well, I called the financial office, and they told me we are to be receiving information on lenders in a few weeks...and that we wouldn't be getting our financial package until June or July--when the seniors are gone. Hmm...just wanted to throw that out there. So on to the application process... I turned in my AMCAS the first day it we were able to do so... The AMCAS application becomes available in May--I forget when--I'm thinking early May. You can save it on the site, and keep on returning to it. It's one of the most complex things I have ever filled out! Plus, you'll have to request transcripts like crazy. But once over, you're all set...after AMCAS verifies everything--and states "you are complete." Then when you think the hard stuff is over, you'll start receiving secondaries from the medical schools. Miami's came, for me, I think in July. Then I was interviewed in October and found out then. It's rolling admission, so once interviewed, you'll find out in a week or two. I say, get everything done as fast as you can. This med school application process is a game of chess. It's totally different from the undergrad application process. What we all dream for, is a seat in the new class--and the earlier you turn in your application, the better your chances of getting an "in"--b/c seats aren't filled yet. As for other classes, I would take any interesting science courses maybe...or medical ethics... Hope that helps. alumafly 03-31-2005, 02:26 PM Sidenote: For all those starting in the fall as well, I called the financial office, and they told me we are to be receiving information on lenders in a few weeks...and that we wouldn't be getting our financial package until June or July--when the seniors are gone. *sigh* bh88 03-31-2005, 05:12 PM hey - do any of you guys remember how many people they took off the waitlist last year? i THINK dr hinkley mentioned a number during my interview orientation, just casually in conversation...but i was either in a daze...or my ears were taking a time-out because i think i heard 100 people...but again, that sounds like a grossly incorrect number...just wondering if he mentioned how many at your guys' interview orientation...thanks! flash 04-03-2005, 08:37 AM for some reason, I remember something like 350-400 people were accepted for the class last year (obviously, many declined eventually). I'll be starting at the FAU campus this August, and I've spoken to a lot of students about the advantages/disadvantages at each campus. From what I understand, the main disadvantage is socially because of the smaller class size. However, even that doesn't seem like a huge drawback because there is a lot of camaraderie between the students, and both campuses interact at academic society meetings and various health fairs. Aside from that, the building is brand new with amazing equipment, and because of the small class size there is a lot of individualized attention. Academically, the FAU campus did not have a lower grade average than the Miami campus. Each class also has their own lounge with individual desks and computers. Anyway, I hope this information was helpful. If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me. MabdulD 06-01-2005, 09:48 AM Hello, 2009ers... Looks like I'll be joining you at the U in August, though I'll be down at the Miami campus. As for the Gators fans among us, the idea of wearing a Gators shirt underneath your UM shirt is a very brave and noble one. However, I have a feeling when that first football Saturday rolls around in early September, and its 95 degrees and humid, you won't be so sure about wearing two shirts. It is then that you will have to choose where your allegiances lie, and if it is still with the Gators, and you choose to wear a Gators shirt, best of luck to you... kevin11982 06-08-2005, 01:41 PM Hi everyone!!! Does anyone know which campus fills up first? When you get the secondary application they give you a choice of Boca, Miami, or No Preference. I would assume the Boca campus fills up first because it has fewer slots. In fact, I would bet that prob all people who end up in Boca selected it on their apps – because I think the demand outnumbers the supply. _J_ (To answer your question) I am actually moving to Miami next week because my girlfriend is starting a job. DieselPetrolGrl 06-08-2005, 09:44 PM hahaha u are all going to be my classmates welcome to miami <3 Arsenic 06-11-2005, 08:50 PM Guys, one of you PM'd me and I thought I should post my response for all of you. Its about the $75 freshman survival pack you were sent a letter about: Last year I didnt buy the entire kit, I just purchased stuff individually from the sophomore class during orientation. I dont know if thats an option this year but here's the breakdown you wanted: - you're not going to need scrubs until close to November when anatomy starts. their price depends on the quality, some scrub sets cost $30 and others that are embroidered with the school logo for example cost $50-$60. The ones in the freshman pack are really basic, something like the scrubs you can buy at the JMH uniform shop for $15 a pair. You could always buy the kind you'd like'd somewhere else, maybe allheart.com or the uniform shop I mentioned. -the dissection kit you will definitely need, again not until November but try to buy it individually if you can if you dont want to buy the whole pack. I think it was $10-$20 last year by itself. I dont remember the exact price. - the freshman lecture CD is a MUST HAVE. you have no idea how much it'll help, its full of outlines, review sheets, tips from the sophomores, etc... best thing you can buy in 1st year. again though, you should be able to buy this individually. i think it was somewhere between $10-$20 last year by itself. BUY THIS CD, IT WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE MUCH EASIER. It is also only available from the sophomores, you cant buy it in the bookstore. - the other 2 things you dont really need. you can buy a nice id badge holder that says UMiami on it and has the UM logo from the bookstore for $5. You also dont need the tshirt for the same reason, though they are much more expensive in the bookstore. Bottom line: Last year I only ended up buying the CD and dissection kit during orientation. A lot of people just bought the kit to save them time later from having to shop around, etc... Like I said, you'll need to buy scrubs and a dissection kit but not until November. You'll be using the CD right away. Just as a heads up too.... you're going to have to spend about $500 that week buying a stethoscope, opthalmoscope/otoscope kit, etc... Those arent from the sophomores, the school worked out a deal with a distributor to get the costs down and will offer you an order form. Whats even more painful is that the equipment is required for clinical skills. If you have any other questions, just PM me. Remember... Also we had some nice FREE items e.g free heart CD, a practice eyeball, free pocket eye chart and more etc. Again if you get enough people, you can probably get no shipping, plus there is no tax. I think that's enough info, if you are interested PM me. The company is actually working on creating a site for UM students to shop at their convenience, more info later. They sure do. Whenever I had to call the registrar's office at UF, I would spend 10 minutes on hold, get shuffled around from one person to the next, and finally the six person would say, "Oh, that's not available here. You'll have to call another office." Whenever I call Miami, on the other hand, someone answers the phone on the first ring and usually is the person who can answer my question. I'm really impressed that I can call Hinkley and talk to him directly about whatever's on my mine. Also, the staff at Miami usually takes care of faxing and mailing documents the same day that they are received. I'm looking forward to see how the instructors act. Nflow 07-02-2005, 10:05 PM Really? That sounds good. I guess UM does it up right. What does the orientation entail and what is the appropriate dress (do we need a suit)? Thanks. The dress code is business casual and it is enforced, meaning no flip flops but not really a suit either. Most guys wear a nice business shirt and tie. You spend the first day being introduced to the staff, the curriculum etc, then you have lunch with some of your classmates, upperclassmen and a faculty member (mine was an Ob/gyn resident). Second day, you get your ID, more lectures and other things. Saturday is "games day" basically getting to know your classmates and the day you get assigned into your academic society. I think that is all. I know some of you are a little nervous about starting medical school, at least I know I was. UM is awesome, and I seriously do not regret my choice. My classmates were cool, the curriculum is great. Sure there are some flaws, but they usually try to fix it, and take students input very seriously. I love it so much, I am spending my summer break doing research at school, while some of my other classmates are in Europe etc :). Have fun enjoy your summer and see y'all in August. However, I don't think that happens during orientation. I seem to remember it occuring around the time of my interview, which was probably in November. I don't know what other people are doing as far as having their families come, but my guess is there's very little reason to have them there, unless you're still settling in and you need help with moving in, etc. Of course, I have no idea what's happening during orientation, but I doubt any of it will interest your family all that much. However, as I'm sure you know, there's that thing on Wednesday from 6:30-8:30 for families. I'll be there with the fam, since I'm from South Florida anyhow...it's less than an hour's drive. But other than that, I don't think they'll be around. Arsenic 07-27-2005, 12:12 PM I have a quick question for everyone. Is anyone having their family come in for orientation? Basically, they save it until your almost done with MS1 so that its a symbol that you've overcome a year of med school. Parents are invited and its nice because you'll finally get the pin that seperates you from the upperclassmen. Even though we dont have the white coat ceremony other schools have, Miami allows med students to wear long white coats - not the short ones that only go down to your waist the way most med schools require. DieselPetrolGrl 07-27-2005, 12:51 PM the short ones were white coats?? ok um yeah i was mocking them at the uniform shop in the breezway behind the campus mc donalds. i thought they were wacko jacko replica jackets - minus iron on Llama alex that whole saturday play day thing - its really hot out these days - are you sure its going to be ok? any chance if it rains they will let us hang out at the RAT ? MabdulD 07-29-2005, 11:11 AM So, anyone remember a few months ago, Dr. Hinkley sent us a mail, and somewhere in there was a username and password to poke around the education website and see class schedules and lecture videos and whatever else is on there... Anyway, could someone PM me that? I just want to check out the schedule. USFpremed21 07-29-2005, 12:19 PM Following is a PM from a fellow UMiami MS1. I hope this helps you all !! I was surprised to find out that our schedules are already available via UM website. My question is what is "Doctoring I" course? Are they like clinical skills class or something? Yep, doctoring is a group of classes ranging from professionalism, behavioral medicine etc. but the major one is the clinical skills section. Almost every week if not twice a week you will have a doctoring class, this includes your preceptor and society sessions, to get trained on the clinical stuff. You have a midterm exam and final which are part of competency week, Okay I have one more. I talked to this lady(Daisy, I think) who takes care of the waiting list for parking decals and she said I would be competing for a spot in Highland garage on the day of registration since there were like ten of us who asked to put our name on the list on the day I called to reserve a spot. On the school map, Highland garage seems REALLY far away from our classroom building. Is it better to just let someone else have it and wait for a better garage spots to open up or do you think they are already full ? What happens if I don't get the Highland garage spot(like someone else already got to it before me)? Highland looks farther than it is on the map, it connects to the red garage on the second floor. it takes less than 5 minutes to walk from the red garage to class, hope that helps. Also you can tell daisy you will rather wait for the red garage, and try the metro rail, student group for a month, this way you get to know your way around and some of your classmates. The best garage, i think is the west garage and has a ridiculous 3 year waiting list, so most students just pack in the red garage. Okay and this may sound like a silly question but I have no idea what kind of clothes I should be shopping for before starting school. Do people wear jeans and tank tops or slacks and button down shirts to class? Should I go casual or conservative? I guess it will help to know if you are male or female, either way it's the same ,the choice is yours. Some students dress casual, some too causual, and others a little more formal. The choice is yours, as long as it is not too extreme. The only time outfits are regulated are during official school functions, such as some doctoring sessions, preceptor, etc. I've heard that a lot of UM med students go to the undergrad UM campus library to study. Do you have to buy separate parking decals for undergrad campus? I know they have people giving out parking tickets for cars without decals. Yep, last year the SG worked out a deal, that allowed med students to get discount passes to park on the undergrad campus. keep in mind there are labs, gem rooms, and a library on the med campus. And this is my last question: on the schedule, I see that they give us lunch break from 12 to 1. Do you guys normally eat lunch at school ? Do people bring lunches? Is there a place to eat inside school like student lounge? Yes, some students bring their lunch, while others buy from several places on campus, however the two closest places and most popular are Au Bon Pan and a cuban cafteria that will cost around $8 per meal. We do have a student lounge on the second floor, with vending machines, fridge, microwaves, TV, pingpong table and also houses your student mail boxes.
