Hey Michael,

Most of the people have been posting on the "Anyone heard from KU" thread but this is as good as any. I wish I could post here but I'm still waiting to hear something.

Out of curiousity, when did you hear that you got in?

I heard on the Saturday the 20th by snail mail. I was one of the lucky ones to get accepted on the first letter. I think there will be more to come in March. Good Luck.

Michael

Hey guys - great idea to get an 'official' thread going. Sounds like there are quite a few KU med students here that will be starting in August 2005. I'm excited to begin, though I'm sure that enthusiasm will wear off by the middle of August. Oh well - we can party hard during orientation week! :hardy:

I have not gotten a letter from KU yet but I wanted to give this a bump so any recently admitted future kansas jaydocs can post here since it is "official"

Hopefully there will be several posts here in the next few days

See you then!

hi all. well, i got my letter today and i'm an alternate, in the 40's. so is that just a super long shot? any idea of how many they take, they say it always varies but i'm sure there's an average. i just want to start planning for next year and now i have to put it off even further. ugh!! i thought maybe evajaclyn would have an idea, i know your bf found out late-and is doing really well!!! just wanted an honest opinion. i find it hard to believe that over 40 people would decline acceptance. thanks!

Hey Dulcinea~ You're right, my boyfriend was in the low 40's on the wait list and he was accepted the first week of June. Its a long wait, but it could still definitely happen for you. :luck: :luck: :luck: I hope that it will all work out.

How are you guys doing with staying focused on classes this sememster? I've pretty much completely checked out from undergrad at this point...

every three weeks or so I panic and call them, frantic that i have been dropped, my admission revoked, my med-school dreams placed on hold for a year. the very nice Peggy H. said that they are going to try and send them this week. and not to worry (short of getting arrested for something nefarious they don't drop anyone and are very much in contact with if they do). so soon enough.

I don't know that there's anything you can do to improve your ranking once its set. It wouldn't hurt to call the admissions office and see what they have to say about it. The list moves pretty quickly though. Last year, it got to the 40's by the first week of June. I don't know how far it moved after that. Good luck. :luck: :luck: :luck:

By the way, I just received notice that scholarship apps are due March 25. That's only 10 days from now! So all you fellow March accepteds better hustle if you want a chance at the free cash. It should be in your AMCAS email.

Oh and get the ball rolling on your financial aid apps too. First step is to get your PIN number from the fed'ral gummint, www.pin.ed.gov. Of course, since it's the government, it takes them 3 days to process this simple request :)

no clue. but i do remember peggy heinin? (i think it was her) talking about a deposit fee which will include the cost of a now mandatory background check. which of course we have to pay for. i'm not worried about the amount though--i just want to make this thing official and move on with my life. it's been a long, drawn out process.

by the way, i'm already about to sh*t my pants thinking about the hawks playing in this tournament; we've got a pretty tough road ahead of us (if not the toughest in the tournament). but a unc vs. ku elite eight game would be a college basketball fan's wetdream. there's no way the ncaa committee "accidentally" set that one up. i'm already getting goosebumps...

Anyone here familiar with the changing vision for KUMC. I cant find anything on it but does anybody have the old vision or mission statement before Atkinson took over. I thought I remember KUMC having a focus on supplying kansas with primary care physicians with a strong emphasis on kansas residents. It seems now that they are focusing a lot on the research side of things and trying to put KUMC on the mapy (US News map that is).

Does anyone else have any thoughts or concerns about this?

Here is the current vission and mission

Our Mission
The University of Kansas School of Medicine commits to enhance the quality of life and serve our community through the discovery of knowledge, the education of health professionals and by improving the health of the public.

Our Vision
The University of Kansas School of Medicine will work with its partners to become the premier academic medical center in the region known for its excellent education, innovative scientific discovery, outstanding clinical programs and dedication to community service. It will be known as the place where everyone wants to come to learn, to teach, to conduct research and to receive his or her health care.

Alright guys I'm psyched up to come to KC, Got accepted in December, and have been working frantically to get all this scholarship stuff and FAFSA done. I'm originally from denver and although I'm in the minority, I m sick of Denver and can't wait for school to start. Fortunately I graduated one quarter early, so I feel for those of you still in classes, I'm not sure I could finish strong.

Anyone from the area what to let me know where the best places to live are. House or apartment (though from past experiences, I'd prefer a house to rent). I'm not opposed to a bit of a drive... especially since traffic in Kansas is nothing compared to the mess on Colorado roads.

See you in August!

Congrats on your acceptance! Some KU med students live in the apartments right around KU Med (like Rainbow Ridge) or at Woodview which is a short drive away. And a few try to get together and rent houses/etc. I'll be living in a house where we'll be renting out rooms, but we're filling those pretty quickly! I think that KU will start a listserv for us in early summer (they did last year) so that we can all start emailing each other. That will be a good time to try to get in contact with other KU students about renting together, etc. When will you be moving to Kansas? Enjoy your time off while you can!

Yes. From what I see and from what I hear from others who work or go to school there, you want to live nearby. Otherwise, the commute on I-35 during morning rush hour is absolutely beastly... and that's not even with the everpresent orange barrels on that road. I have a place that I'm going to have to put on the market because it's in the southern part of the area :thumbdown

A word to the wise, though: if you do live near KUMC, be sure to invest in a good home security system. :scared:

I'll have to take I-35 in from where I'm going to live, but I'm hoping that it won't be too bad! I only have to be on it for about 3.5 miles, but I hope that doesn't get to be a real drag. All in all, I'll be living about 5.5 miles from KU Med. So if anyone ever wants to get away from school, they can come and visit me in the boonies. :)

Uhhh yeah, i don't really see a reason to be concerned about this......You'll soon see that KU is still extremely dedicated to providing all corners of Kansas with great physicians and nurses. I think its great that KU is expanding by buidling new research and clinical buildings, including a heart-hospital that should be top notch. KU is working hard to improve technologies on campus, including a complete revamping of our library and the implementation of virtual microscopy, which will allow you to cram for CTB from the comfort of your own home sans microscope (i think you're class will be the first one that solely uses virtual microscopy). I love it here at KU, and it definitely deserves to be on some sort of map....the route it is currently taking towards that end is a good one :horns:

See you all next year.....and if you're my lil' sib, I gots hella books for you. Some good advice is to NOT BUY BOOKS until you chat with your big-sib first :horns:

Just tryin' to breathe some life into this thread!!! There's got to be more future KU med students lurking about out there.

So I went to the KU Med school formal dinner/dance last Friday (my bf = MS1) and it was pretty crazy - good to know that KU med students know how to party when they have the opportunity. :)

So does anyone have any big plans for this summer before school starts? I've set the last day at my job for May 20th and am headed to Europe on May 23rd. Can't wait!!!

Haven't heard anything yet from KU except that they are working on getting documents ready and will get those out to us soon. Anyone else hear any news? Alright, back to my fun and exciting desk job. :p

Well I found out that I have to go test out of Physics 1 because I had skipped it. So I get to spend a couple summer weeks cramming for that. Yummy!

I wandered the campus the other day with another applicant (she's on the waitlist and works there as a labbie). Got to see various parts of what we will be calling home. Some of the facilities have seen better days but there's massive construction all around, and frankly I think KU's new emphasis on research is exciting. There's also a new bar and grill across the street from Murphy, and as I understand it, business there is quite brisk. What? Party school? naah...

It was called "The Grande Affair". All MS1s through MS4s (and their dates) are invited (of course, there is a fee) to a really nice dinner, presentation w/ awards (which I skipped out on being an MS0) and followed by dancing. It was a great time - a HUGE turnout. My bf and I sat at a table with all the recently matched MS4's - pretty awesome to see what we have to look forward to in a few years!

Yeah, I'm not planning on getting a Eurorail pass either - its actually pretty cheap to fly between some cities, so you might want to check out that option to (if you haven't already).

Yeah, I'm not planning on getting a Eurorail pass either - its actually pretty cheap to fly between some cities, so you might want to check out that option to (if you haven't already).

you're right there are some REALLY cheap flights available in europe. but, I am deathly afraid of flying (i'm really dreading the trans-atlantic flight) and i've heard some horror stories from my friends who have flown on some of those cheaper euro-airlines.

yup, they informed us of acceptance oct 1st, and said the info/deposit package would follow in a few weeks....

Dude, like you I am irrationally afraid of flying! I missed out on a lot of stuff b/c i didn't want to get on a plane. So I went to the doctor and got an Rx for Xanax that i take before flying. Now I like flying

I can only imagine what its like to have a fear of flying. I went on my first plane trip at before I could walk and I've been going non-stop since then. Jumped out of one once too! :)

[QUOTE=phleebie]what kind of work do you do? i'm working as a phlebotomist until school starts, and I'm itching to quit my job, too--i'm pretty tired of poking people with needles all day. it's so mind-numbing.

I work in at Harborview Medical Center on the Psy ICU. I run around all day saying dont do this, take this medication, whats up doc and you might want to look at this with you patient. It's a great job, its part of the University of Washington and so it is a teaching hospital. I get to help train med students on psy issues and learn from the residents and attendings on that floor and the ones that come to do consults with the patients on our floor.

[QUOTE=phleebie] i say, live it up while you can. i'm definitely going to check out some coffee shops in Amsterdam, but i think i'll pass on the red light district. a bad case of crabs would be a horrible way to start med school .

From the time that I began applying and all through my acceptance period KU has been weeks/months behind their stated schedule for getting us info. Does anyone know if this will continue all through our time there or is there some sort of anomoly with this year's starting class? I really hope that this is not a sign that KU doesn't know what their doing -- Most of the time I have no idea what I'm doing so I really need them to have a clue. Anybody know if this tardiness is typical for KU SOM? Can't wait to start.

To all that were wondering about the wait list: I am on the list and I have inquired a great deal about the subject around my work space. I work over at KUMC and I have gotten some pretty good feedback from those that have knowledge.
1) They accept more people than actually attend the school up front(~30 canidates)
2) Once those 30 or so reject then they dip into the wait list.
3) The number that they accept from the list range year to year, but in recent years the numbers have been very high. Last year they went into the upper 60's, which means a decline of nearly 90 students. The worst year in recent date for the wait list was in the mid to lower 20's a few years back.

Unfortunately it is just a waiting game, and I am onboard with all of you all.

There is a series of apartment complexes off of the I-35 Lamar exit that are popular. The commute is rather short, and during morning rush hour you can even avoid the highway and take the side roads. You take a right just before the Quiktrip and head on down that direction. They're considerably nicer than what you can find near KUMC.

Oh i would definitely imagine so. i looked at a few of the more "economical" apts around KUMC just to see what they were like inside, and a couple of those places were complete shiit holes, no joke. i mean this one place literally smelled like poop while the lady was showing me the apt. i was trying really hard not to gag, again no exaggeration.

Too funny - yeah, I was pretty laid back at the interview. I was so excited because you were saying she was so nice, and this other guy just had an interview with someone who was pretty intense, so I was really hoping I had the nice lady! "Yessss!" - I hadn't even seen Napolean Dynamite yet at that point.

Definitely excited about Europe - had to modify the trip a bit because we were trying to go to too many cities too quickly. We're actually booking hostels and stuff now, so its really happening. Can't wait!!!! I think we're going this route - Frankfurt - Prague - Budapest - Athens & Greek Islands - Venice - Florence - Cinque Terre - Sorrento/Naples/Pompeii/Capri area - then meeting my family in Rome and heading off to Croatia. So you wanna talk about going broke? Oh well, I've never been to any of those places before, so I'm sure it will be worth it. Definitely one big last hurrah.

As for apartments - I know of several people living at Rainbow Ridge right now and they seem to enjoy it there. I also agree with the person who mentioned the apartments by Lamar and I-35. There are some peeps there too. I'll be living by I-35 and Antioch. About a 10 minute commute, but it'll be worth it. Pretty close to a nice Gold's gym too. We'll get to work out at KU for free, and its an alright gym, but the equipment is by no means new. At least you know that wherever you live, you're only locked in for a year, so if you don't like it, you can easily move! Good luck to all of you figuring it out.

My goodness the second week of may. :wow: Hey isn't the packet full of a bunch of photocopied forms they already have on file and maybe like 2 or three 3 personal things specific to the applicant?

I'm gonna call financial aid and see if they will at least tell me about the package they awarded so I can get on top of looking for more loans if necessary. For us out of staters, 50 grand a year is more than they loan out from stafford, and I'm worried about the amount of time they are gonna leave us for planning.

I'm getting a house too. I've had more of apartment living than I can stand lol. too many loud neighbors during finals. I'm not sure when I'm coming out though probably the beginning of July. What areas are you guys looking around for housing other than right next to the school. It'd be great to have some classmates near by.

I've been trying hard not to complain (because I'm truly grateful for the acceptance) but this is pretty disconcerting.

First it was "sometime in Feb." Then it was "within the next few days." Now it's "we're changing offices so it'll be the second week of May." My gosh--how is it that the original mailing date was three months off?!!

I don't mind waiting. I just want the school to be upfront and tell us the truth. If they're merely waiting for the field of entering matriculants to narrow down as other schools hand out acceptances, this is a horrible way to go about it.

ok, so I called financial aid, and they say that they won't tell us anything about our financial aid packages (even though they have been awarded and are simply waiting for us to approve and accept them) till we get the groupwise email... in our packets.

I keep telling myself that patience is a virtue but my frustration level at not knowing what's going on and not knowing if they're gonna tell us is starting to rise. and I'm getting worried, about the info packet, and about what this means for the years ahead.

I'm totally psyched to be going to KU, it was my first choice, partly because they really seemed to care about their students, but I don't want the excitement to fade into worry.

I'd just like to thank everyone who has figured all this info packet stuff out. I've been quietly complaining to stoic and others about the lack of information. Caesarsgrl, I wouldn't worry too much about what orientation is going to be like. I'm sure it will be explained in this mythical information packet, or quite possibly it could be in the "Orientation packet" that will arrive sometime afterwards (I made up the orientation packet, I've never heard of one). And not to be rude but I hope it takes awhile to get to August 1st when I get to meet you :) because I'm going to have a long, beautiful summer that will be ended when I meet you. However, if you are in K.C. in mid-july drop me a PM and maybe we can arrange a pool party/bbq. As part of my summer vacation I plan to sit for hours on end drinking colorful drinks, soaking up harmful UV rays, and accomplishing absolutely nothing.

Once again, thanks for the info...and for anyone else's info I still haven't gotten an email or packet. I think it would be funny if they sent the email to our new email accounts.

You get your financial aid info online - just log in to your kumc webmail account (should have the info in your packet, I think) and you'll find an email from financial aid mixed in with all the others. Follow the steps in the email and you can find out your reward package.

I was watching the news last night when I saw a late breaking report of a fire near KUMED...
(that's interesting, I thought)
The fire was at an apartment complex near 35th and Rainbow...
(hey that's close to my future apartment)
The footage showed major fire damage on the third floor of the Apt. Complex...
(hmmm, my future apt is on the third floor)
The anchor said up to 15 apts had been damaged at Rainbow Ridge Apts...
(F**k)

I didn't even wait to see the rest of the report. By the time I arrived at the scene, the place was surrounded by fire trucks. It turns out the fire was not at my building, but at the one adjacent to it. I was happy. Then I saw the people who had lost their homes to the fire standing outside--no outbursts, just blank expressions. As a drove home, I made note of two things:

1. Don't ever use grills on third floor apt. decks, especially when it's windy
2. I need to lose the me-first attitude: people lost their homes yesterday while I was celebrating my own dumb-luck. The larger picture is always more important.

Rainbow Ridge is supposed to be my new home for next year as well. I called a couple days ago to ask when I could sign a lease and the girl there said she wanted to wait until june to have us sign a lease but gauranteed us a spot. I wonder if that promise is still going to hold true or if stoic and I will have to be looking for a new home. :( I'm going to call tomorrow and find out the good/bad news. Maybe the fire will make people scared, cause them to move out, create lots of vacancies, and thus force the apartment complex to give us a really good special to live there. Is it bad to hope that a fire will lower my rent? In any case, I hope those 15 apartments aren't damaged so badly that all of those people have to move. I don't think Rainbow ridge had that much extra capacity.

That bites. Sorry, guys.

I mentioned earlier in one of the KU threads, a string of complexes just off of I-35 and Lamar. A number of med students and other KUMC types live there, and I've heard the commute is not bad at all. Plus, the area is much nicer. (you may have noticed the email from KUPD about car thefts near KUMC, ugh)

we hadn't signed on a specific apartment yet, but had put down a deposit. they told us to come in a sign sometime around june 1st, but who knows what will happen now.

how many people have been displaced because of this? and where are they going to be staying?

Felipe - no damage to your apartment, right?! I hadn't heard anything, so I didn't think so... Hope everything is alright.

As far as orientation goes, Felipe could probably tell everyone a lot more about that. From what I heard, its getting to know each other and the school during the day and partying while you still can at night. As for exact details, I'm not really sure.

Oh, and to follow up the big bash that we had two weeks ago with the MS1's, we're planning on having some sort of MS1/MS2 BBQ/Beer Fest at our place in early August...so keep your calendars open! :)

I called Rainbow Ridge today. They said not to worry. Only 3 of the apartments were damaged enough to make people move out. They told me that they still have plenty of space for us. I'd just like for them to figure out what apartment we'll be living in so we can sign a lease. I was a little worried there for a second, all my hopes for a good place to live were flashing before my eyes.

In other news...I'm struggling through my last 2 weeks. I don't know how much longer I can do this undergrad thing. How am I supposed to care about finals when I know that I can't get worse than a C in any class regardless of my test outcomes? So right now I find myself playing this game Kitty Cannon (http://www.ebaumsworld.com/kittycannon.html) most of the time. It is mindless fun, but be careful to not get addicted!

Hey Kendall,
Just make sure that your daily commute isn't too long, and you won't have a problem! Mine will be about 10 minutes from door to door - as long as the traffic isn't too bad on the highway. There will be a lot of people living right next to KU, and at the same time, plenty of others will be making a commute. Personally, I don't think I would like waking up every day and seeing the med school right outside my door, but then again, those people can just walk to class. Its all about personal preference. Where do you think you'll end up living?

there are a lot of apartments within a few blocks of the campus. rainbow ridge is popular (myself and several other sdn'ers are going to or already do live here), and so are rainbow towers.

I'm living in a house that we're sharing with 4 other KU med students. However, there are some really nice looking apartments just down the street from our place.

Like Stoic wrote, a lot of students live at Rainbow Ridge. It seems like that's a great place to start your first year and get familiar with the area. Rainbow Towers are also there, but I've never seen the inside of that place, so I'm not sure what its like. Also, I've heard that a lot of medical students live out at Woodview - not too bad if you're sharing, but expensive if you're living by yourself.

Here's a link I just found: http://www.apartmentcities.com/Kansas-City-Apartments/KU_Medical_Center_Apartments.asp

Not sure if it will be helpful, but a few apartments are listed.

Another link, with many apartments, Rainbow Ridge is #24. At least this gives you an idea of the locations of a lot of the apartments in the area!
http://www.apartmentcities.com/Kansas-City-Apartments/Kansas_City-KS_Apartments.asp
As you can see - there are plenty of places to look at!

And if you're out of state, you can check out the Missouri side too. I spent a few months living at City Place in Westport in Kansas City, MO. Great area, also right next to the Plaza, but a little bit more expensive because of the location. Its also about a 2 minute drive to KU Med.

Anyways, hope that this helps a little bit in the apartment search!

On par with NateKSU's post, is anyone privy to how quickly the waitlist may or may not move? I recall someone saying that last year they hit the 40s by early-June. Was that typical or was that an exceptionally large and quick amount of movement? Either way, did the website accurately reflect said movement last summer? I know the application site is supposed to be up-to-date, but this one number a day routine is excruciating. Also, without prying, has anyone forfeited his/her spot on the waitlist? If so, what number? I hate to be blunt, but I know many like myself are painfully curious... Thanks and best of luck to everyone who's waiting and congrats to those who've been accepted!!!

I heard the list got to the 60's a couple years ago. But on other years it didn't get past the 30s.

The snafus they were having in the admissions office may have helped get some people to accept elsewhere. I hope so, mainly because someone that I care about is on the waitlist. What is your position, myx?

In terms of paperwork: have you all only gotten that first mailing that had the checklist and other stuff? i thought they were going to send out another with parking and more information.
but, with that health stuff, i had my dad make copies of my immunization record and i filled out the student health immunization form with those dates, and attached the copy of the record. also, for the TB test, i had that done back in WYO at that student health. for the physical, i had my ER attending fill it out for me--it was great.

i'm actualy working on campus right now for the kidney institute, which is in Wahl Hall East. so, i've gotten familiar with parking and the commute from mission, and everything else.

which part of kc are you moving to?

honestly i'm coming kinda slow on the paperwork. the university still hasn't confered our degrees (it was supposed to be done on the 24th), so I'm still waiting on that to send a transcript (they're supposed to do it as soon as the degrees are official). i told them that if i got kicked out of med school b/c of their delay i'd be back with guns.

my pcp filled out the immunization record, but didn't attach copies of the record... so i'm gonna try to deal w/that today.

and i'm currently completing the online safety training.

anyway, i'm going to KC to get the keys to my place on the friday (the first) , so i'll just hand deliver all this junk.

I have everything done that came in the first mailing. Except, I have yet to get my TB tests completed. They told me to fill in the tentative dates for the tests and send the official paperwork in when the results were back.

I am trying to sign a lease for a house this week. If we get the lease terms agreed upon, my two roommates (one other Med Student) and I will be moving into a house on 43rd St (1 block east of Rainbow) around the 23-25 of July. I could move up earlier if it looks like there is going to be a good number of people from our class already in KC. Our house, once we move in, should be available for a social gathering of sorts. :D

I'm interviewed 2X now at KU, am non-trad 30 year old white male, did great in undergrad my 1st 2 years then current wife said no to med school and I slacked the last year and went to chiropractic, but after devorcing during first year left.
I owned several successful businesses in the following 5 years, sold them took the mcat 9,8,9 after 8 years off and like I said got KU interviews.
Premed gpa was about 3.3, but I have over 240 hours of pre and post bac that have my overall gpa at 2.98.
I havn't given up and have been on the alternate list (only due to a late late interview) at KCUMB. Im sure that my 25 mcat and my gpa and time out of school are not helping.
I grew up and have always lived in KS and KU is my 1st choice.
I am considering retaking the only 2 premed courses that I got a C in and a biochem class this fall before my 3rd interview.
What do you think?

A shout-out to felipe5 and evajaclynn, and all those other friends of mine whom I know but don't realize that they are people on sdn...

I'm excited to hear back about the "abnormal" fun you guys will be having this year.

Great to hear from you dogg.....next time i get a chance i'll come up to L-town and give you a call so's we can jam a little and, well, of course, kick it

I missed all my classes today...so I suppose that means that I'm off to an excellent start?! :)

That would be the definition of an excellent start if you looked it up in the Jaymarc Dictionary of how to do well in Medical School....my definition is not much different :)

Oh, and a friendly reminder to all you M1's to
a.)study and get through ALL relevant pre-test questions for CTB a few days before the exam
b.)if you have Wheaters, be sure and glance at all micrographs in relevant chapters as most pics come from here
c.)if McGregor provides information online, you better damn well learn it. K-baum's sections on his stuff aren't that great...plus getting through that book is like chugging pancake batter
d.) and for biochem....uhhhhh, well, just pray that he doesn't d!ck you over. Learn those notes like no other, including the "on your own" slides, for he'll sift through that stuff with a fine-tooth comb.

Thanks for the advice -- I just asked my big sib about this today. She said almost the exact same thing -- except the advice about MacGregor's online content. It seems insane that he essentially wrote his own textbook to accompany his part of the lectures. I may be a bit slow, but his explanations for bio switches are about as clear as mud.

I thought I had a handle on this material... but then... did anyone check out those old biochem and phys tests someone sent out on email?

Those made me  and  and :scared: and :barf:

Let's just say that it covers slightly more than just "general concepts."

They'll be playing a pity quartet for me the day of the test: +pity+ +pity+ +pity+ +pity+

Am I the only loser who plans on spending Saturday night studying for this Friday's tests (that is when I'm not checking SDN to make sure that nothing important was posted -- "I promise just a quick look-see then back to studying")?

Soup...if you're out there, don't take stoic's advice. That self serving gunner is just out to get ahead of you. If it were up to stoic we'd all be at keggers every night of the week while he got ahead on biochem. If you ask me, I say you study until you can't see anymore, your brain aches, and you have to call the KU med police to come scrape you off of a desk. But on the other hand...if you wanted to have a beer with someone...I "might" be able to find "someone" who could use a break too. Then you wouldn't have wasted your saturday night studying and you can say that you went out drinking this weekend yet still found time to be productive.

Whose the gunner you or Stoic? You're both memorizing footnotes from the biochem slides while trying to encourage me to imbibe. I goofed around too much last night (adult beverages may have been involved) so tonight I'm doing the work. I must admit though its a bit hard to concentrate -- I got together with a buddy of mine this afternoon who leaves for Iraq on Tuesday. I feel a little embarassed worring about collagen while he's worrying about being shot. Anyways, I glad that I'm not the only loser with nothing better than biochem to do on a Saturday night.

i'm not a gunner, i just don't know how much effort i need to put out to scrape out a "B" average quite yet. I'd rather have a cushion and float down to a "B" than have to struggle up to one.

ps.

favorite word from med school so far: syncytiotrophoblast. you sound smart if you say it.

Not in class now, but I'm planning on going at 9:00 -- I find Dr. Klein sort of amusing and am hoping to pick any tips for the exam.

Hey guys, best of luck on your exams tomorrow and be sure to enjoy the hell out of the weekend......just don't get too drunk and decide to burn Kiertzenbaum in effigy......but by all means burn the biochem book cuz god knows it makes a better fireplace log than a reference :horns:

I would burn the biochem book, but, Helmkamp wrote one of the chapters.. which means that he will abuse the hell out of it when it gets tested :(

Which reminds me, Klein cowrote that Pretest book... back to studying for me /burnout

I don't want to call it burnout one month into school, but I think I'm approaching the point of diminishing returns with regards to preparation for this test. That is a bad thing because I still know nothing about @#$@#$# embryology. Good Luck Tomorrow Everyone.

There's an electrophys supplementary lecture tomorrow (9/10) at 10am at WHE. I just hope there's something for CTB... those tests are brutal, more so than Biochem which surprised me the first go-around. It was biochem that made me go :scared: and I did not study enough for Klein's. Now I'm worrying that I'm not studying enough on genetics and have the reverse problem... simply planning out your studying is surprisingly hard.

On the other hand, my preceptor rocks. Can't wait for my next visit

Two rounds of tests down... how's everyone feeling? While I'm ok with my performance so far, although to be honest, I'm surprised (disappointed) that I haven't been able to get better grades on the exams. First block I studied too much biochem, too little CTB. Second block I studied too much CTB, too little biochem and definitely not enough physiology. Actually, I think that I'm studying enough its just trying to figure out what to emphasize that trips me up. Overall, I'm getting "sats" although with little or no room to spare -- it's a bit unsettling to have no cushion and to be number crunching all of the time. All of that being said, I'm still having a blast.

I'm really glad to hear that. My wife is starting to doubt my capabilities (I have zero doubt that I can do it, but without her support it will be much more difficult). I don't have much of a science background, especially cellular and chemistry stuff, so I expected to struggle a little in biochem and ctb but I also thought that anatomy and physiology would be areas of strength for me. I was planning on using them to balance my lower scores, but so far that hasn't quite worked out the way that I planned it. Despite showing improvement across the board, she has asked me several times if I'm going to be able to pass med school and be competitive for residency. I keep telling her that I've got to crawl before I can walk -- besides, despite starting behind most of the class, I feel like I'm catching up. "Sats" are good enough for now, especially if I score well on the boards, aren't they?

Soup,

Hang in there.. "surviving" is all you need to be doing for now, according to what I hear. "C"s here aren't the poison they are in "normal" college. I'm pretty much locked in for a C in biochem myself, since the course is already 2/3 done.

The number one thing residencies look at is your Step 1 score. Grades are too
