BananaSplit 06-14-2005, 03:19 PM Do any of you know if we're supposed to do a health clearance and where all the forms are? Like most schools, UCSD requires a physical before starting medical school. Last year, forms were on the new admit forum/webpage. I don't know if they have put that up yet. But it's probably a good idea to book an appt with your physician now and start digging up those immunization records. serendipiddy 06-14-2005, 03:38 PM hey, Who is from Cal and going to UCSD this fall? Supersunny, that's a very disturbing avatar. Have you ever seen Mack Daddy Mario 3? CaMD 06-23-2005, 10:16 AM Hey Class of 2009! Can I ask what made you guys decide to attend UCSD? Also, in light of all the UCSD bashing on SDN, did you all have great interview days that dispelled the competitive rumors? Or did second look weekend convince you? Or did you decide any school is going to have the same mix of more and less competive people so to just go with it? I didn't get to meet more than a couple students on my interview day and I just got in off the waitlist so I didn't get to go to second look, so I sort of feel like I'm choosing blindly here. In choosing a school I feel like the #1 important quality for me is the student body. Of course I know this is hard to figure out because I'm sure it does vary year to year and even at second look you don't really know who's coming. Nonetheless, any thoughts you guys have would be helpful! :) doozenberg 06-23-2005, 10:40 AM Congratulations CaMD! I just recently got off the alternate list too and will be at SD this fall for sure. I talked to a couple of friends who are finishing up their 2nd years and what I gleaned from their perspective is that there is a mix of people who are just there to pass and then there are those who are always going for honors. If you are in the latter group, things will feel competitive, but there isn't any backstabbing and overt gunning. Cliques form and people gossip about each other, but this happens anywhere you have a relatively small group of achievers together in one place, ie any medical school. Class chemistry probably also affects the experience. Who knows, since we're the first entering class admitted under the new dean, Dr. Kelly, this class might be a little different in terms of the intangibles. I get the sense she reads personalities and character traits very well (she interviewed me), so perhaps we'll have a dynamic different than the classes before us. Vacant 06-23-2005, 11:49 AM I'm trying to find a good place to rent and got something nice in North Park area, $750 (all included) for 500sq.ft 1bed/1bath. The owner says it takes about 15-30 to get to campus. Do any med students live that far? I don't want any roommate and will be renting either a studio or 1 bed/1bath for myself. I won't be able to find anything under $700 in La Jolla or Pacific beach, right? What do you think? I need your response right away since I have to decide before the end of today. CaMD 06-23-2005, 12:02 PM Hey Doosenberg! Congratuations to you, too! I was so shocked when Dr. Kelly called! One thing I'm concerned about is only getting 4 weeks for boards/vacation after 2nd year. Do your 2nd year friends have a perspective on this? I have a friend at another school who only had 4 weeks and said it was horrible and was something she would put a lot of weight into when choosing a school. Also at the school I was/am currently going to, they were bragging about how much time they had to study and were sure that was why their scores were very good. Is the theory that UCSD's traditional curriculum prepares one well enough that you don't need much time to review? Also, while it seems like the super long lecture hours are an over-exagerated myth, it does seem like UCSD gives us way less clinical exposure during the first 2 years than most places. Do you have a sense of exactly how the clinical stuff (precetorships, learning physical exams etc) fit into the curriculum? Thanks for your help! I don't know exactly when I need to decide by but I'm trying to gather as much info as I can. Congratulations CaMD! CaMD 06-23-2005, 12:17 PM Can someone please post a link to the financial aid paperwork? I filed my fafsa for them, but need to get their institional forms. :) doozenberg 06-23-2005, 08:49 PM Well one of my buddies is actually taking it tomorrow, the very last possible day before he starts 3rd yr rotations on Mon. He agrees that there isn't a whole lot of time to review between the end of 2nd yr and the start of 3rd. He also said that while the traditional curriculum doesn't prepare you explicitly for the boards (like UCI does), it molds you into a certain type of student that is used to managing the merciless volumes of info and nitpicky details. I've heard UCSD students score well above the national mean with a 100% pass rate. I'm not sure if scores are published anywhere... anyone know about this? Anyway, yeah I'm concerned about board study time too. And they also make you take Step 2 during the beginning of 4th year instead of at the end like most places. These are definitely drawbacks to the school, but I could not turn it down because the school's location, low(er) tuition, and stature far outweigh those of my other options. I figure if classes before us have gone through this and succeeded, then I'm just going to suck it up and endure it. Afterall, this is medical school, not a walk in the park. For the forms, login to your status check page and the link below "final decision letter sent" is a link to the pdf of the finaid forms. passthesashimi 06-23-2005, 08:51 PM Can someone please post a link to the financial aid paperwork? We had a class on history taking during the winter and one on physical exam skills during the spring. You get as much out of these classes as you put into them. My understanding is that in the second year there is more instruction in exam skills, both required and elective. Compared to basic science it's not a huge part of the curriculum (2-3 hrs/week) but I don't think it's "way less" than most other schools. The elective system lets you arrange preceptorships in all sorts of fields. Some students also arrange preceptorships with particular faculty members by asking them directly. There's also the popular free clinic elective, which can give you about as much pre-3rd year clinical exposure as you could want. I understand that UCSD is not the best choice for everyone, but I would not be concerned about lack of clinical exposure or clinical skills instruction in making your decision. I don't know exactly when I need to decide by but I'm trying to gather as much info as I can. lord_jeebus 06-24-2005, 03:15 AM I've heard UCSD students score well above the national mean with a 100% pass rate. I'm not sure if scores are published anywhere... anyone know about this? It's not published. From what I've heard the pass rate is close to 100% if not 100% each year. The average scores (again this is total hearsay) are above the national mean but not as high as they should be (ie. if we had more study time). There are a few people who score 260+ here, as there are at most schools, so it is possible to do very well with our curriculum. It depends on your study habits and how well they match the UCSD system. Personally the depth of the curriculum helps me form an intuitive understanding of concepts that works better for me than a pure memorization approach. My hope is that this intution will be retained to help me efficiently prepare for the boards when the time comes. If you use a pure rote approach at UCSD, and try to memorize everything they teach without developing a conceptual understanding, I think you will probably burn out before the boards, and you would be better served at a school that teaches to the test. That's just my opinion and I know there are other schools of thought regarding the good and the bad of UCSD. Congrats on UCSD!!! I'm also going to start at UCSD in the Fall. I graduated there from undergrad - it seriously is the BEST school!!!! Anyway, all my roomates graduated, and so I'm looking for roomates currently. I have a 2 bed/2 bath condo in la jolla, right next to ralphs and about 5 mins walking distance from UCSD; it's also right on both of the shuttle stops (UCSD shuttle and SD city shuttle). The place is pretty big, w/ vaulted ceilings, in-house washer/dryer, etc etc. It comes almost fully furnished and has a gym w/ pool and 2 spas in the complex, as well as a private garage. Please let me know if you guys are interested, or if you even need help finding a place in SD. Mark maschult@ucsd.edu sdnstud 07-22-2005, 03:35 PM Can you tell us how much? Also, are you looking for 2 people to fill one room or one to fill the living room, or one to share a room with you? I prefer 2 people in a 2 bdrm apartment and my max budget is $800-900 a month. PM me if I fit the person you're looking for. Hey all you soon-to-be-MS1's! Congrats on UCSD!!! I'm also going to start at UCSD in the Fall. We can negotiate a price probably if you want the room to yourself. ideally, i'm looking for 2 ppl to share one room, but that's not too important. rjb 07-22-2005, 08:41 PM hey guys, i got an email about my transcript... just wondering if it was a mass email. kinda worried, a response would be great guys. Anyone who went to UCSD or knows the area know a few of the better complexes right around campus to look into? I would really appreciate it. Thanks, y Like I said before, I have one room for rent that is in a Condo complex. In any event, here is some info about apartments and condos (I just graduated from UCSD this past June); passthesashimi can also help too (he went to UCSD w/ me and was in my MCAT prep class): The first idea is that La Jolla is inexorbitantly expensive, and if you want to live west of I-5 (close to UCSD SOM) it will cost you an arm and a leg, or maybe both legs. Here is a list of apartments, etc. I-5 side: 1. Archstone - there are two of these - one over by UTC (far from campus but it is accessible by the UCSD Cityshuttle) and one right off Gilman Drive (about a 5 min walk from UCSD SOM); the complex is pretty nice; expensive if using Archstone La Jolla (by UCSD). 2. Villa La Jolla - a little dumpy and no in-house washer/dryer, but they are close to campus 3. Cape La Jolla Gardens - a condo complex where I live - its very very nice albeit pretty expensive. It is on Via Mallorca/Via La Jolla; there are a ton of condos/apts/townhouses on this street so check 'em out, as they are right on the UCSD shuttle's route and close to campus. 4. There are small studio apartments right behind the Ralphs in the La Jolla Village Square shopping center. I-805 side: 5. Costa Verde - this is a mammoth apartment complex - it is very nice, but a bit farther from campus (between I-5 and I-805); it has a really nice gym and a ton of pools, etc...free juice bar, too! 6. La Regencia - a lot of UCSD college kids live here because it is cheap; be cautious here as the walls are thin, it is loud a lot of the time, and the leasing office can be very unreliable and greedy. The hallways smell like a delightful mix of curry and BO. But it is an awesome place to go for parties and it is pretty convenient as it is right next to Vons and the local La Jolla boba shop. Check around this area, which is called "La Jolla Colony" for townhouses and other apartments. 7. International Gardens - next to La Regencia; cheaper, so popular w/ UCSD undergrads; it's a bit run-down, but not bad. 8. La Scala - right next to IG and right on Nobel; small apartments - kinda reminds me of a Florida hotel or something. 9. Trieste - small but full of parties; the complex doesn't have much parking; the rooms are average sized. 10. There are a few apartments right behind the UTC complex and a new complex that just got put up right off the I-805 off of the La Jolla Village Drive Exit; you can also find a few more complexes off of Genessee and Nobel Blvds. I think that's most of them - I'm sure I missed a bunch of places, but everyone should be advised that in La Jolla there is this big movement to turn most of the apt complexes into condos, so you may find that a problem when trying to lease; also, La Jolla-ites are kinda cynical when it comes to college/grad students; if you have an opportunity to go with a parent or some older individual, it might give you an easier time with the somewhat rude leasing agents who might want to take advantage of you, etc. Good luck!! Newquagmire 07-26-2005, 02:29 AM seriously? yes. they'll ask soon. as for housing, unless you're looking to buy, see above. hamid32 07-27-2005, 11:31 AM Do you know what address we're supposed to send our transcripts to? I visited best buy to check out that crazy dsl yahoo deal and it doesnt work in most places, so you have to look into that. if you find anything, keep us posted :) b kourinnoseiji 08-14-2005, 07:34 PM There are two major ISP's in San Diego: 1. COX - which is the best by far (cheapest with the best options and fastest internet), but you can't get it if you are north of the I-8 (so most of SD can't get it). 2. Time Warner - most ppl in La Jolla have this one - I use it myself; it's pretty fast, not too expensive, and rather reliable. For cellphones, I would suggest Cingular/ATT or Verizon, as those have signal towers in the UCSD Price Center, so you can get a signal pretty much everywhere. Cingular/ATT is a better service here at UCSD. Hey guys, any recommendations on which internet service provider to get? I have a cell phone so I don't plan on having a phone at home.
