View Full Version : UMass Medical Class of 2009
goblin king 03-17-2005, 02:24 PM Hey I just wanted to see if there's anyone else out there pumped to be spending the next 4 years on the banks of mighty lake Quinsiggamond? I heard back in december, and promptly withdrew from everywhere else. I can't wait... 8K in tuition, baby!
So yeah if there's any of you out there who are going to be joining me, we should get a little online party going here.
Speaking as one who grew up in the worcester region, it won't be thaaaaat bad hanging out there....and speaking as someone who did 4 years of hard time up in Lewiston Maine.....Worcester is like the Rome of the modern world compared to Lewiston.

Pretty sure I'll be right there with you - would definitely be excited! I'll be the girl grinning like an idiot the first few days on campus. :D
AnotherDork 03-17-2005, 03:19 PM I hope against hope that I will be joining you (1st choice), but for right now I'll just sit back, pray, and check the mail obsessively every day. Congrats to everyone who got in!
Mephisto 03-18-2005, 11:56 AM Hey guys, can't wait for UMass!! Are you guys all going to do that MOE thing? You know, where you go camping and rafting in maine for a few days? That sounds like a lot of fun. Also, since matches just went out yesterday, any word on how UMass students fared? There was an article in the Worcester Telegram about it today, but I couldn't get access to it. Maybe I'll call the school and request a match list.
FrauBlucher 03-18-2005, 12:03 PM I'll see you guys there!!!! :) :D :)
But we start so early! August 11, I think, we have to be there. What's MOE? And are any of you going to that thing in June? (I can't)
To everyone waiting - good luck!!

Moe is the outdoor orientation, I believe. I'm unlikely to go (saw DELIVERANCE at an early age). I half feel like I'm going to miss out on valuable bonding experience, and half know that I'll have four years of bonding to look forward to.
FrauBlucher 03-18-2005, 12:23 PM from the umass website...
"MOE [UMass Outdoor Experience] starts the year with a wicked successful rafting / camping trip to Maine."
let's celebrate the fact that we can all start saying "wicked" again without getting laughed at!
but I think MOE could be really fun - it seems like a chance to get to know everyone in a very un-stressful environment. plus maine in august is awesome. (i'm guessing it's in august; anyone know?)
goblin king 03-18-2005, 12:49 PM yep its in august up in baxter state park...its about an hour north of bangor. so it is certainly qualifiable as deliverance country. its beautiful up there...though i seem to be unable to escape the state of maine. :D
have any of you looked into apartments/real estate in the area? i live in the area and have spent a bit of time cruising around, there seem to be a ton of housing options...there area quite a few apartment complexes that look intriguing. plantation towers looks ok, and is pretty close, but i dont know a whole heck of a lot about it. anyone have any leads?

Hey, I woiuld also like to know the housing situation in worcester. I was also wondering what the UMass Medical social scene is like. What have you guys heard? I know that we'll have to study a lot obviously, but my major concern about not being in a city like NYC or Boston or even a private school in a small town was the social scene. I have a feeling that since most of the students are from MA and that there isn't a centralized location where you can find most of the students living (i.e. an apartment complex or housing area with local undergrad students), most students will have their own lives outside of med school and it may be kinda tough to meet people.
skylinewrx 03-19-2005, 10:01 PM Bump.
FrauBlucher 03-20-2005, 12:25 PM We could all live in the library together! no, wait, i hate the library...
I know what you mean about wanting a centralized place where we all can live and meet, but at the same time we're probably going to be spending many days (and nights) together, so sometimes it's good to have your own place separate from school to go home to. Also, there are only gonna be 100 of us (right?), so we'll probably meet pretty much everybody (I hope).
Mephisto 03-20-2005, 10:45 PM That's very true. I'm really looking forward to this.
Mephisto 03-21-2005, 11:30 AM Hey Guys, I just received some information on the UMass 2005 Residency match. First of all, there was an article and the Worcester Telegram following three students who matched in their top choice. One was a girl who is going to UConn for Family Practice and another was someone off to Penn for Dermatology (probably one of the top programs in the country!) Anyways, here are the hilights from the Match list.
2 people matched in Dermatology (Penn and UMass)
5 people matched in Anesthesiology
12 matched in Emergency Medicine (programs include Beth Israel and Dartmouth)
1 person matched in Ophthamology
4 matched in Surgery
2 matched in Urology
4 matched in Radiology
Good Program matches are the following (keep in mind, I'm not experienced, but this is just my perception)
Univ of Mass - Dermatology
Boston U Med Ctr - Radiology
Boston U Med Ctr - Medicine
Mass General Hosp - Pediatrics (x2)
BI Deaconess Med - EM
Einstein/Montefiore Med Centr - Orthopaedic Surgery
Dartmouth - Hitchcock - Medicine
Mt Sinai Hosp - EM
Hosp of Univ of PA - Dermatology
U Pitt Med Cetr - EM
BI Deaoness - Medicine (x2)
UC San Fran - Orthopaedic Surgery
Brigham and Women's - OBGYN
U Southern Calif - Urology
NYP Hosp Columbia Presby - General Surgery
U Washington - General Surgery
Yale New Haven - EM
Yale New Haven - Medicine
St. Luke's Roosevelt (NYC) - OBGYN
Mass General Hosp - Anesthesiology
California Pacific Med Ctr - Ophthamology
BI Deaconess - Radiology/Diagnostic
Any other opinions??
blankguy 03-26-2005, 07:18 AM I heard that UMass is considered to be among the top ten med schools(to the extent that you can rank med schools). They in fact get more funding than MIT  (Overall funding). It is second only to Harvard in Massachusetts. What is your take on this?
EDIT:
Do you have to take sociology/psychology for UMass?

I dont know about top 10, but umass does get a raw deal in the USnews rankings. All its stats are ~ top 30 except for selectivity which can never be changed because they only take people from instate so they dont get as many applicants.
oniwindu 03-27-2005, 10:44 AM Just wanted to bump this up.
Also wanted to add a superfluous message:
Goblin king, I love that pic of Bowie. It's funny, because I actually borrowed the "Labyrinth" movie and watched it two weeks ago. Jim Henson and David Bowie, what could be better?

or more scary :scared:
that movie still gives me nightmares...david bowie and spandex? yikes!
goblin king 03-31-2005, 09:27 AM hahaha
dance magic dance?
the match list for this year is really encouraging.....especially for EM. not that they mean anything but it looks like umass fell 1 spot in the primary care rankings and went up in research a bit. so sort of encouraging that we're inching up the research ladder, but whatever, us news is bunk anyways.
to those waiting for the committee to finally get back to them, good luck! i hope to see you at orientation. from what our tour guide said, it seems like they tend to sit on quite a few people until may, so hopefully you'll hear good news shortly.
i think i'm leaning towards eventually settling in plantation towers, i looked at the place last weekend, and its very close, plus its next to green hill park for running and such. the 2 bedroom apts. are like 1200/mo, so with a roommate that would be like 600+a few utilities (i think they take care of water and heat...could be wrong about that). the location is really sweet...its literally within sight of the school....but im keeping my eyes open for cheaper alternatives- though umass is cheap, the fewer checks made out to stafford & son, the better.
aaah!!! bowdoin!!! ...jk i have spent quite a bit of time there over the years.....at least we're out of maine....though i'll miss the skiing, popham beach, orrs&baily's island, and the whole red hot dog thing. ok, not the red hot dog thing...those continue to scare me.

dance magic dance?
The soundtrack is a huge favorite of mine.
BraneDoc 04-02-2005, 05:14 PM Looks like I can finally add to this thread. Got the letter today, nearly 6 months after interviewing.
You will all have fun and be prepared well - I finished in 2004. The whole rankings crap is silly. Most of the things that the schools are ranked on are things that have no real impact on teaching or making you a better physician. My advice is to completely ignore them
But have fun at Umass - the teaching there is very good, better than most places, because the people there are interested in teaching above all. And there are more and more grads staying in Worcester for residency, so when you do 3rd and 4th year stuff you get to work with them, which is a plus.
2tall 04-02-2005, 05:41 PM did any of you read leonard laster's life after medical school: how 32 doctors shaped their careers? it's a really great book. it made me want to attend umass, but alas i'm not a resident. congrats to all of you who were accepted!
nades333 05-14-2005, 07:29 PM Finally decided to go to umass next year, so I'll be entering the class of 2009!! Does anyone know when the rafting trip to maine is? Also, do we have a white coat ceremony during orientation? Any thoughts on living in worcester?
jkamed 05-20-2005, 07:16 PM Hey everyone,
Looks like I'll be joining you in August, I cant wait! Is everyone going to the June 4th meeting?

I'll be there! You can recognize me as one of the many who are grinning from ear to ear. I can't believe that orientation is June 4th. Everything is happening so quickly!
FrauBlucher 05-21-2005, 10:46 AM hey all!
i forgot there was another umass thread kicking around here...
congrats to everyone who's heard already! i myself am quite excited about moving to woostah (not for worcester itself, alas, but for school to start). we start aug 11, right? is white water rafting before or after that? anyone have any suggestions for looking for apartments from afar? (websites, etc.) or do any current umass folk have tips/pointers?
enjoy the rest of your time off before the craziness begins... :)
bostonabe 05-21-2005, 11:39 AM hey all!

Hi, I'd like to join this thread, as I got off the waitlist just last week. I don't think I've ever been this excited for school to start...I must be turning into a geek or something. Anyways, I think MOE is in early August. And I just recieved an email about the June 4 orientation...from the forms sent to me, it seems you have the opportunity to learn about housing and potential roommates at this orientation, so don't miss it!
Look forward to meeting y'all soon!!
scattered 05-21-2005, 03:27 PM Hey all:
Very high likelihood I will be there this upcoming August as well. Congratulations to everyone who got in and those who were just pulled from the waitinglist. I'm looking forward to meeting you all in two weeks.
kaps22 05-30-2005, 10:10 PM Hey guys- I'll be at UMass next year as well! I can't wait!
--- I actually have to miss the June 4th event, which sucks-- but maybe someone can fill me in later. Where are you guys planning on living? I haven't started the search yet, but heading down later this week... excited to meet all of you

It sounds like they give out a lot of housing information at the meeting this weekend (they also send it to you if you cant make it), so I am waiting until then to really check it out, but I have looked a bit on craigslist and it seems like there are tons of options. Also, I have a friend going to the grad school there who says that students send out mass e-mails about apartments that they are leaving, that is probably a great resource. Is anyone else trying to find roomates at the meeting? It seems like a difficult thing to do in a single meeting, but I guess we'll find out!

I'd like to join too, I got the call on Friday the day before orientation! Talk about everything happening so quickly. When I called the lady back , she was on her lunchbreak and I had to wait a half hour. Longest 30 minutes of my life!
FrauBlucher 06-15-2005, 04:30 PM hey, how was the orientation for anyone who went? thoughts, impressions, anything interesting to share?
thanks
n0chi 06-20-2005, 07:13 AM hey,
