That was a tough loss. WVU beats Wake and yet we are both accepted to Wake and waitlisted at WVU.

I'm excited to be joining Wake Forest Emergency Medicine c/o 2008. Are any of the medical studs. looking to buy rather than rent? If so, let me know if you know anything about neighborhoods, etc in W-S.

Go Deacons!

Go Deacons!

I'm looking to buy -- found a few houses in the Ardmore area, but they're selling like hotcakes. Any other areas you recommend?

Wake's defense was frantic in those fatal minutes in OT. That was a tough game to watch for a future demon deacon.

I got a big map and started marking locations. There are plenty of houses online in the 130K range within 7 or so miles of the medical center that are new and nice. I am trying to contact a current resident to find out about the area. I'll let you know.

Congrats on your acceptance! The next four years will fly by!

Don't you guys think that it's a little risky to buy? We may only be in W-S for 4 years. With all of the fees associated with buying and selling it could be tough to make money in such a short time. You could even lose money. Plus, as full time students we will have no income. You can't deduct mortgage interest on your taxes if you have no income. Also, what if you need to make a major repair or replace an appliance?

I'm not trying to talk anyone out of it. I myself have considered buying and these are some of the concerns that I have.

If you are in W-S for four years and you pay rent, then you lose money. If you buy you can reasonably hope to sell for a profit. As a student with no income the question is more valid. For a resident, it is almost a no-brainer.

In my experience, Real Estate in small southern cities is often a good investment. The population of these cities is growing as people realize the benefits. I will likely not have too much pressure to sell the house, when I am an attending, considering the house will cost ~700$/month and I will likely have 15,000/month pre-tax income. Everyone's situation is unique, however. But I am reasonably certain that if I choose my location carefully, I will profit when I sell. And if I decide to stay in the area, I'll benefit from the deal.

You have to consider factors such as: Do I intend to move 'back home' when I finish/where do I want to do my residency, etc? What kind of loans can I get? I agree that buying might not be for everyone.

I rented as a student and have seen my peers who bought houses profit while I have been a tenant and can not possibly get any of that money back. Probably not even my security deposit.

As far as repairs go, I'm not even considering houses >5 years old. I think that cuts the risk. New homes come with a 1 year warranty, if I'm not mistaken.

If there is anything I'm missing here, let me know.

Like EPA7X1 said, you'll be loosing money if you rent. The housing market in W-S is affordable and fluid, largly because of the residents who buy and sell homes surrounding the medical center. Even after having a home for 4 years, you'll build up a nice amount of equity. Even at a conservative estimate of 1 or 2% appreciation a year, you'll be making about $4000 - $8000 profit when you sell (assuming a $100k home).

Repair-wise, anything major is usually taken care of by the seller after you have an inspector thoroughly examine the home. Most existing-home sales come with a 1 year warranty where any major problems (roof, structure, termites, etc.) are covered by the previous owner. There is a risk involved in buying, but from what I hear it is one of the safest investments to make.

I will be in Wake's MD-PhD program, so I'll have income from the stipend to gain tax benefits.

Are most people using a real estate agent or buying direct from owners? I am seriously considering buying. I would at least be able to get a nice deduction on my 2005 taxes because I will have worked for half of this year.

Some of my reservations about buying come from the fact that Wake only budgets $480/month for housing. I don't know if I can come up with a large enough down payment to make my monthly payment that low.

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure that I can rent something for $480 and I won't have to worry about foreclosure, repairs, etc.

The other consideration for me is eligibility for scholarships. Wake might offer me some scholarship money and I'm not sure if owning a home would affect that. I'm sure I'll get an answer to this in the next couple of months.

I know that renting is a waste of money and I really do want to buy. It just seems like a scary proposition to me. A house is a big financial responsibility and I will be living on a fixed (and tight) budget. However, talking to you guys is helping me to get more comfortable with the idea.

On an unrelated note: Does anyone know anything about a 2nd look weekend? I haven't heard anything yet.

I'm using a real estate agent to help close the deal. Since this is my first time buying, I wanted an expert to help make sure everything goes smoothly. Its a lot easier to just tell her what houses I want to see and she can contact sellers to organize the viewings. Plus, it doesn't cost me anything. Her commission fee is paid by the seller (~3%). I can PM you my realtor's info if you want.

I haven't heard anything about a second look weekend, I'm not even sure Wake has an official one. When I was accepted, I asked to re-visit the school and meet with some current students and faculty members to make sure it was where I wanted to go. They were accommodating to the request.

It would be nice to get together with the entering class, but I'm not sure if we have a huge SDN class.

congratulations on your acceptances.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me.
BTW, I bought a house but I am a little further from the school. I live in an area called Clemmons. I also have a wife and baby. Most people live in the ardmore area. Walking distance to school.

Considering how cheap houses are in the area you would be crazy to rent. You will get none of that money back in equity.

Wow. There's been no action on this thread in ages. You guys still out there? I'm still freaking out about the housing situation. I took a trip to W-S a couple weeks ago and the properties that I looked at were dismal (rentals). It seems like it will cost me ~$700/month for something big enough for my family. If I'm gonna spend that much anyway, I might as well buy. I need to talk to a real estate agent.

Hey i6,
I agree with you on the rental housing situation -- fortunately buying is affordable in W-S. I've been working with a realtor from Prudential who's been very helpful, I'll PM her info to you.

Does anyone know if classes start exactly on July 25th? That seems early.

Congrats to everyone accepted. We look forward to meeting all of you. Buying or renting there are plenty of options and plenty of people with experience either way. I personally rent... but that is because I am a single guy living totally on loans. Buying definitely has its virtues though. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me or ask here. Oh and just for the record don't listen to anything dsblaha has to say... just kidding

Thanks for the info. I doubt that classes begin right away. We will probably have a few days of orientation stuff first. I know that some schools do a whole week of orientation before setting foot in class.

Hmmm. . . I guess it is too easy to figure out who I am. I should change my user name because if you know who I am you will immediately know that I am full of it.

Anyhow, when I suggested that you buy instead of rent I assumed that anyone who is considering buying is married or has a significant other who works, who can make a mortgage payment. Otherwise, unless you have a lot to put down it would be hard to make the payment.

There is a week of orientation, so classes don't start immediately. But orientation is mandatory so you will have to be here. Classes actually start the first week of August. Last year it was August 2nd.

Yeah, my wife and I found that any apartments/houses that were big enough for us (we have a 2 yr old daughter) were much more expensive than $480. So, if my wife will have to work either way, we might as well buy. It seems to me that we can get more house for the money if we buy.

For you single folks, you can get a really nice place for around $350 with roommates. Roomates aren't such a good option if you have a wife and kid though.

My classmates that are married with kids (one has a 2yr old daughter like you) rent houses. My other married friends without kids own houses. I don't know if this means anything but I noticed the coincidence while reading the last post. Being single is more flexible in terms of roommates... of course. Luckily there really are plenty of options to fit just about any need.

I got my info about orientation this weekend. I knew that I would have to get vaccinated against Hep B, but it looks like I can just wait until I get to Wake and have it done right there at Baptist. I will have to go to my doctor to get some proof that I am immune to chickenpox and to get a Tuberculosis test though.

What else was interesting?

How about the laptop? It looks nice, but the screen is a little smaller than I would like. 14".

I read that there are $600 of required textbooks. I wonder if we can get them cheaper online or get hand-me-downs. I'm not buying any books until I have to. I've gotten by the whole last year without buying a text book.

I like how they tell you not to bother studying this summer. You don't have to tell me twice.

Don't buy any textbooks before you get here. For that matter I don't think I would buy any textbooks period. Textbooks are a total waste of money... you will never have the time to read them. The only books I have purchased lately are review type books. And I buy everything online, the bookstore is a rip off. If you are really paranoid and have to buy the text books there are plenty of students who will sell you theirs (cause... thats right they don't use them and they just sit there and collect dust). When you guys get here for orientation there will be plenty of people to talk your ears off about the does and don'ts of first year.

Our Academic Computing department is very good. They do a good job of getting good computers and putting the right stuff on them. You guys are basically getting the newer version of the laptops we got last year (with the biometrics, etc)... I really like our laptops. Just the right combination of size and power.

That's what I like to hear. I had no intention of buying any books, but then the info packet that we just received suggested that some books would be required. If that turns out to be true, I will try to borrow any required books from upperclassmen.

Hello everyone! I'm heading to Winston-Salem this July 2005! Is anyone out there going to Wake Forest this fall from California? I am so stressed about the move. Anyone looking for a roommate? Hehehe! I look forward to meeting all of you July 25! Yay for Wake Forest!

I used to live in San Diego years ago, but now I live in Charlotte so it will be a very short move for me. I just received a packet of info from Wake and there is a form you can fill out if you want a roommate. Wake will do their best to facilitate. There is also a housing section on their website and I think there are listings for "roommate wanted." Good luck with the move. I recommend that you only bring the bare essentials since it's such a long move. Leave the rest behind if you can.

Do any of you wear glasses? I am wondering if I should look into getting prescription goggles for anatomy lab.

themann
04-27-2005, 08:30 AM
I don't wear glasses or contacts, but plenty of my classmates do. I wouldn't worry about the prescription goggles. I don't think you would need them. Lab isn't usually that chaotic and messy and I don't ever remember getting anything in my eyes. I think they tell us not to wear contacts, but I can't remember. They tell us a lot of things like don't wear open-toed shoes that no one listens to. I would maybe check it out first and then make a decision before wasting any money.

One of my classmates moved out from Cali, I for one drove from Utah so I am familiar with the long drive. We just packed our cars as full as we could and left everything else behind. My married classmates that had to move 2000+ miles bought space on ABF trucks, packed their stuff, loaded onto the truck, drove out to Winston in their cars and got their stuff off the truck when it arrived.

Hey, everyone, thanks for the advice about a California move. I'm in contact with a second year at Wake who moved from Northern California and she recommended shipping my car on a closed car carrier and then flying out. I think that's what I'm gonna do. It's kind of expensive but saves me the hassle of driving out. I can also pack my car all the way to the top since there won't be anyone riding in it. I got the pre-enrollment packet this weekend and have already sent in the paper about roommates. I'm just such a planner and it's bugging me that I don't know yet. But all in due time I suppose. :-)

Shipping the car is a good idea. I did that once and everything worked out well. It is pricy, though. I would double check with the moving company that they allow you to pack things in your car. The company I used required the car to be empty.

I know, it's more of a comfort issue than anything. I'm not real crazy about the big goggles with elastic that leave a red line on your forehead and under your eyes. A friend of mine that worked in a lab had some goggles that were a lot like regular glasses but they had little shields on the sides. I imagine that they could be made with a prescription, but it probably would be expensive. It's probably not worth it if I'd only be using them for a few weeks, but if I was going to be using them for a long time it might be worth it.

I am currently making a tough tough decision between wake forest and a couple of other schools. So I could be a member of the class of 2009 and I will DEFINATELY be looking for a roommate so watch out! Hey, give me some good reasons to choose wake over the other schools (UIC/Ohio State). Well, Wake gives you a free computer and printer your first year. That was an incentive for me. It's really cheap to live in Winston-Salem. (I'm from La Jolla, CA, it's outrageous to live here.) It has one of the prettiest hospitals/schools I have seen. Although, Ohio has a pretty campus too. I got accepted at UIC but Chicago freaked me out. NC is just a really pretty place to live. It has the feel of a small town but has all the things you would get from a decent sized city (i.e. malls, restaurants) The anatomy lab at Wake Forest is really cool, especially with the flat screen monitors over ever table so you can look up histology slides and x-rays. Good luck with your decision!

Yeah, actually, that was another thing. I really liked the curriculum. It's organ based all second year. And during the first year, for the first four or five months, all you do is anatomy and histology. It's just really intense but it's all you do academically. Then the second half of first year is biochem, genetics, mol. bio., etc. The whole curriculum really appealed to my method of learning.

Well when I finally made my decision, it was between two schools, Wake and George Washington. GW was like $48,000 a year and no computer plus either a massive commute or $200/mo. for parking. At Wake, it's $34,000 for tuition, a computer, printer and $15/mo. parking. For me I thought I came out way on top. I agree though...it's one of the toughest decisions I made.

Decisions, decisions...

My thoughts exactly. The word "free" does not really apply here. I would say it's "included" in the tuition. The total budget at Wake is $50K (according to the FA package that I recently received). It's not cheap, but it's actually not that bad for a private school. I know some people that are paying $55-$60K to go to other privates or even state schools from out-of-state.

I like it. The curriculum is nice in the way that first year is set up. I also like the organ system based 2nd year even though a lot of schools are starting to use this. Just let me know if you have any specific questions, and I'll do my best to answer them.

What's your impression of the grading system at Wake?

It's H/P/LP/F. Some people really care about grades and want the H, so there is a competative atmosphere here (from what I hear some classes are more competative than others). I for one am less concerned about grades than some other people. My objective is to learn as much as I can to prepare for the boards and for life, even if that means leaving out some of the very fine details.

Good luck chooxu. You should call Wake and see where you are in the waitlist. They will tell you something general like top third, middle, bottom third. At least you can get a sense of where you stand. If you don't make it I would strongly suggest that you take the August MCAT and focus strictly on the verbal section. If you only bring the 7 up to an 8 it will make all the difference. Good luck. :luck:

I don't know from experience, but remember, there will only be about 50-60 women in our class and we are not a part of the larger Wake Forest community. I wish we were, but it seems the med school is somewhat segregated. On the other hand, all it takes is one so maybe you'll get lucky.

There's like three other universities there, an art college, an all women's african american college, and Wake Forest. There's also women in the graduate school and some of them are on the Bowman Gray Campus. I don't think it will be too bad at all as long as you are trying to get out there and meet people.

I loved Wake when I visited. I'm another person hoping to get off that darned waitlist.

You do get a printer... it's actually a printer/copier/scanner... well at least that is what we got last year. And you do get the printer before the computer. You don't get your computer till later in the orientation, and one of the earlier days as you are leaving they just hand you a box with your printer in it. So yeah it is kind of a cart before the horse thing.

Half of your class will be women. There are women in all of the other health sciences like the PA school. There is also the undergrad... The ladies are around, you will just have to convince them that you actually are cool despite being a med school nerd.

Wake is technically pass/fail but don't get caught up in that too much... pass/fail is a total sham. Schools (including wake) still keep track of every point in every class and then rank you according to that... which is what residencies look at. I think Wake is really friendly and a lot of people share notes and outlines. But everyone will work their butt off to get a better score than you.

This was an important question when I came here too. I had high hopes for the city of Winston-Salem, but the nightlife sucks. Most of the undergrads go to frat parties instead of the bar which sucks unless you want to bust up in a frat party. It's been my experience that it is hard to find young professional single women in this town.

Tomorrow the month of waitlist madness begins. The last MSAR says that roughly 150 more people were accepted than there are seats. They say they don't, it actually says it on your post-interview/"you are waitlisted" letter. I'm expecting major movement between May 16th and early June, but I'm also expecting for it to start picking up from what it is now on Monday. This is based on past SDN Wakeforest waitlist threads.

Do you mean that people did not wear safety glasses at all? I have to decide if I'm going to buy prescription safety glasses in the next month or so because I can get a discount with my health insurance until I quit my job in mid-June. Did some people wear goggles in lab or nobody?

nobody wore safety glasses. the only people that wore any eye protection were the ones that had glasses. a lot of people would wear contacts even though they tell you not too; i don't think it's that big of a deal.

Yeah... nobody wears safety glasses. There are a couple of times when they will give you little face shields to wear. Like when you flush the GI tract, or when you are sawing through some major bones, but other than that you don't need anything in my opinion.

Question.

Does Citibank have an origination fee for their stafford loans?

I can't seem to find that anywhere.

I talked to the people in Wake's financial aid office and asked about the differences between their preferred lenders. What they told me that the only difference between them was their repayment plans. Otherwise, none of them had any fees. So my quess is that Citibank has no origination fee. I didn't go with Citibank so I'd double check on that before you go with them.

la gringa
05-02-2005, 02:48 PM
and take some of the repayment with a grain of salt -- you lose/change many of the benefits if(when) you consolidate... for example i have Medloans which had an origination fee of 3% - i just did w/o the little bit of extra money and now i am getting 3.5% of my principle back at graduation! not a bad little sum to move, pay first 2 months rent before i get my first paycheck, etc. you should see if "healthier returns" is still available. i will have borrowed about the max in staffords during med school - ya'll do the math on that one.

there are repayment benefits but once i consolidate (this year everyone is recommending to consolidate right after graduation b/c the rates are goin up - we get to lock in 2.875% for staffords!!!) they will change to whatever the offer is for a consolidation loan.

bottom line is try to keep the future in mind on your loans... they suck majorly but they are a necessary evil and they aren't going away. try to milk them for what you can in before consolidation benefits b/c you might lose them!

From what I gather, they are all pretty much the same.

I went with Citibank because their incentives seemed to be a little better than the others. I think they are offering 4% cash back or principal reduction at repayment. The terms on their alternative loan were also better than the competition, but you won't have to worry about that DrThom.

None of the preferred lenders had any upfront fees (except Medloans which had a no fee option and also a fee option like AMBinNC described) and the only difference in the Stafford loans seemed to be the bonus at repayment.

The alternative loan is a different story. My interest rate with Citibank is prime, while other lenders charged prime + x% or LIBOR + 2.75%. Also, read the terms of MEDLOANS carefully. They charge some fee (like 1.5-1.75% of principal) at repayment.

I don't know what happened to Marysville, it sounds like it was a pretty nice place when my Father was being raised there. Maybe it has a lot to do with the levies that protect the city from flooding, I think they have hindered growth.

I think 100 is good, In 2003 I think they accepted about 150 people off of the waitlist. Obviously that's the kind of thing that changes year to year, but don't count yourself out yet.

I got the number by subtracting the number of people they accepted from the incoming class, the answer was bigger than 150 but I figured there were some people that withdrew after being accepted before they finished interviewing.

Is she just guesstimating based on your number or does she actually have an accurate idea of where you stand? Also, I'm on the west coast and visiting with Ms. Tise is impractical. Do you think I can call her instead?

Question...

So I have been a slacker and will probably pull a C in one of my classes this semester (its definately an elective I don't need to graduate) and maybe another C but probably not (again, see "blow off elective")

Do you think the school will make a big deal of this if I get a couple of Cs?

It does say that my acceptance is "contingent on my continued satisfactory academic performance" but this phrase is delightfully vague...

Thoughts on this?

i61164
05-09-2005, 08:03 AM
I just spoke to Ms. Tise about satisfactory academic performance. For science classes and classes in your major, a "C" is not acceptable (except maybe in extenuating circumstances). A "C" in a blow off elective is not a big deal, but I wouldn't risk getting two C's. You will be required to send in your final transcript and they will subjectively determine if your academic performance was acceptable. If you got two or more C's or you got one in a science or in your major, they will want a good explanation (they don't want to hear that you had senioritis). If you don't have a good explanation, they may recind your acceptance on the basis that you lack the maturity to handle med school.

So, don't sweat that one "C" and do well on your finals and everything should be ok.

When Wake wins a big game, the undergrads toilet paper the academic quad. I hope to finance med school by selling rolls of toilet paper on campus for $5 per roll the day after the big games. When you really gotta go, $5 is worth it.

I'm not a huge fan, but I'm still a little bummed about the loss to WVU.

I would just wait and get it during orientation. I think it costs about $7, but don't kill me if this is wrong. Everybody has to go through employee health during orientation, so you might as well just get it when they look through your file, but it's really up to you.

Hey,

I just got a letter from Wake on Thursday offering me a spot! I'm really excited! I'll have to turn down my undergrad school, univ. of south carolina to attend. They gave me two weeks to make that decision! So it looks like wake for me. I'll be in need of some roommates (girls) and such as soon as I make a decision for sure. I'm originally from Charlotte. I look forward to meeting everyone!

I just bought a house in W-S. It's 1 mile from Baptist Hospital. The current owner is just finishing his path residency at Wake and he went to Wake for med school. He started a gas residency out West and switched to path because it's easier (his words). I'm really excited about it because it is big enough for my family and I will be able to walk to the hospital. Of course the payment is higher than what is covered by the financial aid budget, so my family and I will deplete our savings until eventually my wife is forced to bring in enough money to support us. I am hoping that she can accomplish this by working from home, but I guess we will see. We have a two year old daughter and neither one of us wants to put her in day care. In another year and a half she will be old enough for preschool. Buying a house was exciting and frightening at the same time. This is our first house after living in apartments for seven years. I like Ardmore a lot more now that I've gone through the house buying process. Back when I was looking at rentals I was getting really depressed because they were so ****ty and/or small. For you renters out there, I think you can get something nice if you are willing to live with two or three roommates. Admittedly, my standards would be a lot lower if I didn't have a wife and kid.

Good luck with your house hunting and good luck to the waitlisters. :luck:

PS: Don't worry about being a nerd. I will be reading Harry Potter in the 9 days before orientation. I'll probably finish it in 3-4.

Guys,

I just got off the waitlist at WVU. Having just entered into a contract to buy a house in Winston-Salem, I doubt that I will accept WVU's offer, but I would like to see their financial aid package. How much time do you think I have to make my decision? WVU doesn't seem to expect an answer for a couple of weeks, and I don't know if Wake is aware that I was accepted, but I haven't told them. How much time do you think Wake will allow? Should I call them, or wait until they figure it out on their own?

You could hear within a few days, via e-mail or phone, from Wake that they know you have another acceptance at WVU and ask what your decision is. I've had this happen to other friends (at other schools) within days after getting off the waitlist, all post May-15th.

I decided not to attend the summer program. I think it's really meant for those that haven't taken any classes in the last few years, or anyone that is really worried about their ability to handle med school. Besides, the upperclassmen have advised us to relax and have fun this summer. My only school related activity this summer will be going down to the Deacon store and buying t-shirts to send to my relatives.

I used Coldwell Banker Triad Realtors (336) 725-0506. They have several agents that know the area around the hospital very well.

Oh, a couple of us had just talked about getting together on July 24 at a bar or restaurant for drinks and dinner before we all began. Nothing has been set in stone; we were just throwing the idea around. I thought we began orientation on July 25 and classes on August 1...

there are only a few bars in winston-salem that are worth anything. one has pretty good drink specials, but no food. Of course there are the normal restaurants that also have a bar, but no good specials.

Ambs! I'm excited for me too! I know the grin you're talking about, I've been wearing it most of the day. Thanks for wandering over to the Wake thread to congratulate me. I'm looking at OHSU in my beaten up MSAR, looks like our class sizes are about the same. When in August do you start? We're beginning orientation on the 26th of July and classes begin on the 2nd.

I snuck onto SDN at work (I know; I'm an addict), and I saw you post on the matriculation thread. I literally jumped with excitement. :D

Orientation is on August 15th, and classes begin on the 22nd at OHSU. My birthday (the big 23) is on the 25th -- my first birthday as a med student...

You're right, I don't know how I got off two days. I think that sounds like a good idea, I'm definitely up for it if it happens.

Congratulations Medikit! It sounded like there was good news coming your way.

kuma -- there are plenty of realtors in W-S, I used Prudential Carolina Realty (http://www.prudential-carolinas.com/) and had a good experience.

As for the dinner get together thing on Sunday --- how is the Marshall Street smokehouse and wine bar (http://www.triaddiner.com/view_rest.php?restid=146) in old salem, tarheel04? If we made it for Tuesday instead of Sunday they have live jazz. Prices are around the middle range ($15 an entree). Any other good places you can suggest?

Stay clear of your future classmate Chris X. He dated my best friend and was a huge dick to her!
Lol. Dude, he's gonna be pissed if he finds out you're blacklisting him on SDN. It's gettin' personal in here.

BTW: Congrats to Medikit.

I'm looking to sublet for the month of July. I love Wake as a school, but my friends and family are all up in New England so I'm hoping to get off a wl at a school up here.

Anybody have a place to sublet? I'm planning on attending the pre-matriculation program b/c I think it might ease me into things.

Thanks!

I called this morning. I'm accepted :). Now I need to find a place to live. I know a doctor who just finished his residency and is moving out at the end of June so I might look into that.

Cheers all the way to Chico, dude!

Very nice, Medikit. Really gives you permission to live life again, huh? Congrats!!! :D

Is TN your first choice or are you hoping for a little waitlist action coming your way?

How are those medical forms coming? I was lucky to get an appointment with my doctor before 7/1/05.

To Do List:

- Get eyes checked
- Get a TB test
- Get a blood test to show immunity to chicken pox
- Get a physical

Once I get to Wake:

- Get another TB test
- Get vaccinated for Hep B

Nope. In college it was suggested, but not mandatory.

I just moved to Winston-Salem today and had a few cold ones at a neat place called 6th and vine. Most of the bars I saw have live nightly music. If I wasn't so tired I'd stay out later.

is anyone here into wine tasting? There are a few vineyards in the area.

I've never actually been wine tasting. Something new to try I guess! Ahh, the countdown continues....

I think It would be great to get people together and tour the "wine country" near Winston.

It's no napa valley, though.

Hehe, so true. I wish I could do that; it sounds like fun. But I won't be free until that Sunday. And I'll only be in WS the Thursday before. But we'll all have plenty of time to hang out. I have a feeling we will get to know each other very well. hehe Alright, back to studying for finals. :(

I will be moving to W-S the weekend of July 4th. We can hang out or go wine tasting or whatever. My house is on Lamont Dr. From the hospital you take Queen to Gales. Gales turns into Lamont and the house is only 1 mile from Baptist. I just can't wait. If I could fast forward I would. I am so jealous that you are there already.

Counting down the days...

Gotta love the quarter system. I didn't actually start school this year until September 28, or at least close to it. So normally I have a decent 3 month long summer. Not this summer though. It's going to be a short 4 weeks. I can't complain that much though. This last quarter I only took my classes pass/no pass. You could say I have officially "peaced out." My poor brain has turned to mush b/c I don't hardly study. :D :p

i know what you mean about fast forwarding ... the week before I moved out here seemed to take longer than usual. I'm in student summer housing now, but get to move into my new house on June 15th. The house is off of craig st --- take queen to hawthorne to craig. We should definitely check out the local bar scene and maybe a vineyard or two.

to keep this thread alive, I thought we could go ahead and try to organize the dinner and drinks meeting the sunday before orientation. add your name to the list if you want to go (i'm adding names of people who already indicated they wanted to go -- just remove it if you changed your mind or something came up). We can pick the time and place when the date gets closer.
