I'm planning to arrive Thursday evening ~7pm and leave Sunday morning. I'm sad I can't be there for all of Thursday, but it's also my last day of class, and unfortunately my senioritis only affects motivation to work....and not tendencies towards guilt. :p

I got my packet today.. I'm in jersey :-) And I didn't see it yet, my roomie read it to me over the phone, but it seems like basically everything you can get online with the exception of the health requirements... like what immunizations you need and so forth. However, in your case, (I think?) there will prob be merit money info too! hehe congrats!

I had the exact same experience as mictoTas--~18-20$ for a cab to walnut street. I had wanted to take the SEPTA train that takes you from your airport terminal to the 30th street station (close to where my host lived) for ~6$, but it only comes every 30 minutes and I missed it by like 2 minutes, so I just took a cab out of impatience. But if you can catch the septa train, there's also a stop for University City which apparently is even closer to Penn than the one at 30th street.

Called the financial aid office today and they said would not be making decisions until at least april 20th.

I'm actually revisiting twice. Going tomorrow to talk to 6 faculty members i'd like to do research with, then returning for PennPreview.

So.

I just called the admissions office about dress code/attire for Penn Preview and was told to dress, "casual, please!" I was then told that it's most important that I be "comfortable and be able to take everything in." Isn't that so sweet?!

So, I'm going dress low-key business casual (I don't think I'd be able to truly just wear casual clothes). I'll bring jeans and khakis and a couple nice shirts, oh, and my fleece if it gets cold, and my cool coat, and shorts and sneakers and shoes. Now you know my wardrobe for the event. Heh.

Since we're going out on the town on Friday evening, it'd be nice to have a couple of outfits to choose from, right? Gotta look cute in Philly!

in reference to Penn's financial aid - perhaps it's random? I don't know. my aid package was actually quite good, but I have two siblings in college, and my parents are staunchly middle class. Not sure what Penn's exact formula is, but for me it helped to confirm that Penn is where I'm meant to be! I do know that there is an opportunity to meet with a financial aid representative during Preview - perhaps s/he can help to clarify things, or get things straightened out? From friends, I also know that Penn has, in the past, matched aid from other comparable institutions (Columbia and Yale come to mind)...

And now I'll stop, as I'm plum out of advice.

Do you mean application process? Well for starters there is no essay for their secondary. Takes ~5 min to complete :thumbup: That's awesome that you will be there for a post-bacc and get to know a few people.

Yeah, ain't that the truth! When I think back to all of those secondary essays! What a waste of time. Yes, Columbia - I'm talking to you. TO YOU! You too, Sinai and Stanford. Penn's was like, are your parents physicians? Yes/No? Great. Please give us money and click submit.

Honestly, there's no clear cut formula. Sometimes the admission process is random. And while Penn's secondary is eazy, breezy and beautiful, it's drawback is that it doesn't give you a chance to talk about why you want to go there. Hrm...After you've taken classes for a while definitely ask to meet with someone in the admissions office to talk about your application, how to strengthen it, etc. Again, can only help!

Man, you were smart! My stupid ass spent a LOT of time on UChicago's FOUR, yes FOUR different essays on their secondary. They were nice enough to send my rejection back speedily, making them my first! GRRRR

ya if anything i think penn looks at your activities and personal statement more than most schools ie they don't have much else. i know that i had a good personal statement (got comments on it at a bunch of schools) so perhaps that helped me.

Haha! That was my interview experience! But seriously, the Ctown bus isn't _that_ sketchy. Well, can be. But I think it's gotten better? Also depends on who you ride with! Eastern and Vamoose through ivymedia.com are pretty good. Except they've been a bit stingy with the movies lately!

riceman- i suppose if push comes to shoves i could look at your personal statement. however, what i did was draft a few zillion times and a multitude of versions including different things and sent them to some of my friends who are good at writing. so my best friend was one. but, i have another best friend who is now getting a phd in english and is brilliant at writing who was an incredible help. so, i'd recommend searching out those english major friends =)

Well, Preview came and went!

Hope everyone had a great time. I particularly enjoyed meeting bidster, rugirlie, skichic and javert in the flesh - and would have loved to have spent more time with Matt and Noah (my apologies you guys if I came off as aloof - I completely spaced on Saturday night plans and, due to travel crap, couldn't make the LGBT lunch...).

I thought the 'weekend' was a lot of fun - and really think Penn's going to be a wonderful experience...and most likely a little intense. It was really cool to hear that most people who attended are actually going to be there next year!

One question though: Did anyone feel off socially? I did. I'm not sure why, but I was definitely not my fun-loving, outgoing self. I felt really subdued. Hmmm. I think I was nervous. But why?! I guess it was like going on one massive date, and hoping that you clicked with the other prospective students, the administration, the curriculum, etc. A lot of pressure...

Just had to get that off my chest.

Oh and Tony, I definitely found you socially lovable, so I'm sure your off feeling was more in your head than you think. However, I did feel like I didn't use my time in the best way as to maximize meeting a lot of my future classmates. I don't know when they're due, but just send them to the general office (the same address to which we've sent everything else). I specifically asked about that last week and was laughed at by someone in the admissions office! She was like, "where else would you send them?" I was like, "I don't know. Sometimes you guys are sneaky." Heh.

I wanted to resurrect this thread.... none of us are representing on SDN anymore. Anyhow, for those of you who have set up your penn key, if you haven't found it yet, there is a first year survival guide which is awesome. It is written by students and it covers EVERYTHING from how to study to what cool comedy clubs to go to to grocery stores, places of worship, etc... Go to www.med.upenn.edu/student and hit the tab on the top, student to student and then you'll see it listed. You can only access it through your penn key though. Also, on there somewhere was a link to old exams. I suggest NOT looking at them because I am now officially freaking out that I'm gonna fail out of Penn Med. Lets hope I'm worrying for nothing.

Just put in the transcript request with your registrar and have them send it to the Office of Admissions/UPenn School of Medicine/Suite 100, Edward J Stemmler Hall/3450 Hamilton Walk/Philadelphia PA 19104 (yes...somewhere between fedexing my deposit and re-entering the transcript request about 3 times before the computer would take it, this address is seared into memory :p )

Maybe we're just silly girls but still, how awesome is that? As I have been doing lately as these threads for the schools I interviewed at hit the first page, I wanted to wish you all good luck in Philly. Penn is an amazing place and I absolutely loved it when I was there. Nonetheless, I wished to end the application madness and accepted a sweet fin aid package elsewhere, so I withdrew from the first teir waitlist a while back. Anyway, you all seem very excited to be at Penn...rightly so and best of luck again.

I honestly have no idea.... I can tell you there were def a few upenn ugrads or alum with me on interview day...

I'm going to be in the incoming class and I went to Penn as an undergrad as well. As far as I understand there are around 20 Quaker alumni in this years class of around 150 so your chances of a comeback seem to be at least decent. Good luck (cave)man.

I know for certain that it doesn't matter what type of PC a student gets, because my hosts for Preview had a desktop and a laptop from different pc companies and I asked them about that...but I didn't hear them say anything specific about macs not being "allowed".

I know that UMich made a statement about online lecture videos only having full capabilities on PCs. At the *worst*, if the same applies to Penn, you could stick with mac and then just use school pc's to watch videos whenever necessary. But this might not even be an issue with Penn...

I actually asked this exact question to the virtual curriculum gurus. They told me that there are only a few small glitches when using a mac. One of which is with the online lectures, normally one window will show the lecture and another will show the specific slides that the teacher is using for the lecture. With a mac, only the window with the lecture shows up on the screen. They did tell me however that they hope to get this glitch figured out and plan on doing so this summer. Other than that, there wasn't anything I noticed that made much of an impact on my decision. So... I went ahead and purchased my new Powerbook and I absolutely love it. I have since gone online and viewed the Virtual Curriculum and seen no real problems. So good luck with the decision process!

Just got a new laptop today.....a Dell, I honestly cant stand Macs.

If anyone wants a coupon from Dell for $750, yes $750 off laptops, they are all over the place. I just got the top of the line one for under $1500...cant beat that.

Your best bet probably is just to call whatever infotech division manages email accounts for the med school, and they might be able to change it manually....I don't think we can change it on our own :(

(I'm just happy I don't have a number attached to my username like my undergrad made me have! :) )

Wait - did we meet? In person? I felt so antisocial during Preview. I shouldn't have traveled/eaten/shmoozed with the other Columbia postbaccs (there were four of us there). If we met, I think I would have remembered. But maybe not. Maybe at Tragos? I was drunk there. Hmm. Regardless, there's always the next 4 years to "meet," right?!

And yes, I think our class will be cool. One of my good friends just got in off the waitlist - and she's awesome and fun and interesting and wonderful - yay for our class! Most everyone I met at Preview (MOST) who were set on Penn seemed real and down to Earth.

That Sigma Nu thing sounds like fun (?) - and yes, alcohol better be involved. I feel like I need to get BACK in to the whole undergrad thing; I've been out of school for 4 years! And the real world sucks! Hard! Let's party again and eat lots of pizza.

I didn't catch on to it, ajt! :) I did feel guilty at times during the night outings though--I couldn't hear well with all of the noise and I felt like i had to smile and nod a lot whenever I didn't catch every word when I was talking to people. :o Hopefully it'll be better at orientation...

there's a store on walnut between 20th and 21st (or maybe chestnut? anyway, in that general area :confused: ) that sells very nice furniture. several girls in class got their beds, desks, and sofa from there.

I'm actually going to try to invest in a nice queen-size bed, with a good mattress. So far, I'm not exactly impressed with Ikea bedroom stuff. I plan on sleeping a good amount, and I definitely want to upgrade from the ****ty dorm extra-long / extra-narrow bed.

Just a heads up....Air Tran is having a sale and there are some good deals on flights to philly from different cities. Thought this might be of use as August (slowly) approaches and airlines become less generous!

Thanks to my mother, I stumbled upon a partial solution today....she emailed me and forgot to put the "mail" bit in the suffix, but her email still came through. So we can tell people to send email to whatever@med.upenn.edu and it still works--it at least saves people having to remember the "mail-dot." :)

That makes it more palatable.

I've been finishing up work-related things in NYC, prepping for a week-long cruise to Bermuda with my boyfriend (yay!), and figuring out moving logistics (headache-inducing).

Oh! Anyone gonna be on South 22nd between Pine and Lombard? If so, well, we're neighbors!

Also, SDN seems a whole lot less fun nowadays, so posting's not as fun. The new kids have taken over - and rightly so, I guess! Plus, I'll see you all soon enough, right?!

I am ecstatic about starting UPENN and meeting my new classmates- (due to a family medical emergency I was mostly absent from revisit weekend). Heh...I was thinking the same thing. This is my first post in quite a while now. It's sorta nice not having the SDN addiction anymore!

I think you can get Dental Insurance from the Student Health Services when you get Medical Insurance. You have to buy it separately but its pretty reasonable at 150$/yr I think. I will ask and get back to all of you.

2) We have an excellent clinic in the Oral Med section to treat medically compromised clinic. Also we do a lot of Oral Medicine than the DDS students do. I strongly believe that DMD and Med students can work very closely together.

Its funny but when ever I have made this offer, a lot of them feel its for free. I do it for free but the school does charge the patient.

You can get dental insurance from the school, but from what I've seen it kind of sucks. It doesn't really cover anything. If you really want dental insurance you'd probably be better off buying private insurance elsewhere (Delta Dental is a name I hear occasionally). The students I know in the OMFS program have a different dental insurance (through the residency or the dental school?) and they actually get good coverage. My understanding is that the med students don't get access to that coverage. Similarly, the physicians at the school get better health care coverage (and food in a separate cafeteria) than we do. Welcome to Penn ;)

I believe you pay approx 180$ a year and that gets you:

1) One complete set of xrays of all teeth once/3 years.
2) 2 free check ups twice a year
3) 2 sets of bitewing xrays(to check for cavities in between 2 teeth and bone loss)
4)All fillings at 5$ copay per vist(May be composite ones too,tooth colored oens that is)

stuff like Root canals and crowns are at a reduced fee. But if you get the basic insurance and come in regularly for cleaning and check up and get the smallest of cavities filled in time,you don't need any root canal or crown unless you play a lo of contact sports.

Yup, although my spam filter removed all of them except 1.

Of course, now that the address it's posted on a popular public website, the number of spams will probably increase ;) One would think that it would be set up to be a restricted email list, but I guess not. :(

Yeah, I'm pissed. I couldn't wait to be done w/ my previous school account and all the crap I would receive each day. What I did was click on those messages and blacklist the senders (next to the delete/undelete options).
