Figured I might start trying to meet people headed for North Chicago so make yourselves known.
What are you doing to prepare, where do you plan to live etc.

Hey! I am also a UCB grad and will probably be at RF starting July. I'm excited that someone finally posted something b/c I was interested in talking to other people thinking of going. Anyone planning on applying to stay in the dorms at RF or is it apartments for all? Any ideas of the best areas to look for housing if I was to look for an apartment? Do you guys think a car is really needed?

okay, a few questions...

What tuition scholarship? Is that for the extra smart/exta-achieving people only?

Does RFU/CMS require parental info for school-based aid?

Is March 28 an official 2nd look day? If so, why didn't I hear about it?

Have they cashed your $100 check yet? Mine was sent at the end of Feb, but it's not cashed yet. Makes me worry that they didn't get it.

Thanks everyone.

I am from california too and might be going as well. :) I think 50% of their class is from california. Just waiting on a few schools before I decide for sure. does anyone know anything about their probation status? in the worst case scenario if they don't come off probation and lose their LCME status, what happens to the students?

You DON'T apply for the merit scholarship. They invited a few applicants for scholarship interviews for the last two weeks of Feb. These interview dates were reserved for the potential scholarship students only.

They were only planning on giving away one $20K scholarship or two $10K scholarships. If you weren't invited for the scholarship interview, then I don't think you qualified for their merit scholarships.

I'm not sure if there are any non-merit based scholarship offers out there though.

Actually, they are currently on a 5 year tuition freeze and the tuition is at ~37k per year. This means that for the next 5 years at RF, the tuition will not increase (which is less what can be said for many other private schools. 37k is less than other places like Tufts, BU, Albany, Drexel, and many other private schools. Plus it seems like they attempt to give some sort of scholarship to ~50% of their incoming class (given most of these scholarship amounts are most likely quite small). Anyone have any other feedback on this?

yah, sorry about the confusion; the above poster has it right. Did you get the scholarship mdin09? Im surprised they only offer 3, and even then 10K isnt too enticing when compared to the total costs; the financial aide at some schools is even better than that. They have a good match list to tout but they need to do a better job on the scholarship front.

I personally thought the anatomy lab at RF was pretty sweet! They had mobile flat screen tv's on which a professor could project a good dissection. I thought that was pretty cool! The facilities there seemed so new too!

While the accreditation probation is a little scary, I still believe that RF would be a great school to attend. I actually emailed the LCME, which is the group that determines accreditation, and the person who replied told me that although they could not release any information in relation to RF's case, medical schools very rarely ever lose their accreditation. Basically RF is going to be fine; you have to figure so since they are attending to the items that the LCME pointed out they wanted fixed. Plus, doing rotations in Chicago would be a great academic, and non-academic experience. While I am still looking at my possible options at a few other schools, I could definitely see myself in North Chicago at the end of this July. What are your guys thoughts on RF's Pros, Cons, and its match up vs other private schools? Anyone else applying to Drexel as well? Albany? Temple?

about the probation thing, I remember that the dean said we are not going to be affected (not sure if i remember correctly). If they lose accreditation, the entering class of 2006 will be affected, not us. Because when we are accepted, they are still accredited. Anyone remember this? If i'm wrong, please correct me.

That's an unofficial second look. Just going with parentals to look at dorms and the campus more. I was there when it snowed on Jan 5th for my interview so I drove in and drove out.

Match list is on the thread sticky called "Residency list for medical schools" on the pre-allopathic forum.

I don't think the dean quite said something like that about the accrediation issue (2006 would get the shaft not us) but I wouldn't worry about them losing accrediation. They took it seriously as a wake up call and many schools have gotten this probationary status. I think it's more of a threat to improve the situation and I like how the dean actually sat down with us to explain the situation out.

I loved RF when I was there. I actually got a chance to spend about 3-4 days in chicago before my interview and I really loved it, I could definately see myself going there. I am just a little concerned about the probation thing. I have an interview at drexel next week and I am planning to go. I think the LCME have to review RF again in may. That's what it says in their website so hopefully we should get some sort of clue. Anyone tried calling their admissions office?

Im from chicago and will be attending RF as a choice over other schools. Its really a great school. Expensive yes, but so is many, many of the other schools many consider. Their matches are great. I talked to a current medical school and they were informed that the school would be off complete probation in a few months, before the summer. The rotation sites are a great diverse experience from what I have witnessed with my brother in law and others. I think its going to be a great education and we will come out doing very well.

Nope, didn't get it. But, I got a letter along with my acceptance telling me that if someone with a scholarship withdraws, I would be considered again for the scholarship. I'm pretty sure you got the same letter though.

Either way, I'll just wait for the rest of my fin aid packages to come through before making a decision.

Basically, the accredidation issue is something we shouldn't even be worried about. If by chance, the school, or any school, for that matter lost its accredidation, current students would be transferred to other med schools. According to the dean from my interview day, the students that WOULD be affected would be the next class. In other words, if you got accepted to the school, but the school lost its accredidation before you matriculated, you would be outta luck. I think there's some sort of deadline before it would be SOL, but I'm not sure. But the dean made it clear to us that we shouldn't even worry about it, and it sounded like it wasn't even possible to lose accredidation this year, it would be later.

For those of you from out of town, you should know that you don't HAVE to live in North Chicago. If you wanted, you could live downtown and take the commuter rail to school every day (there's a shuttle bus service to/from the Lake Bluff train station). Highland Park is a decent choice too, and it's only 20 minutes from campus. The only reason to live near/on campus is camraderie (actually, that's a very good reason). I felt pretty disconnected from the world for my first two years of med school (I lived at Northern Crossing in Waukegan), but in retrospect that may have been good for my study habits.

Congrats to those who got in, it really is a great school that's only getting better. The faculty and administration are warm, caring people, you WILL learn to be a good clinician, and opportunities abound for research if you need publications on your resume. The third/fourth year experience is outstanding. Consider doing rotations at the most difficult sites, you will be rewarded with an excellent education. Definitely do something at Cook County; you'll get lots of procedures there. The Sinai ER is good for procedures as well. The match list speaks well of the school. If you're good, and you work hard, you can match almost anywhere you want.

Hi there,

I'm a 27 year old non-trad who applied to 8 schools for '05 and didn't get in. I am re-applying this summer for fall '06. My stats are: overall GPA (art history): 3.45. Post-bacc science: 3.7. MCAT (August '04) 25Q. Re-taking April MCAT. Work experience in the O.R. this year for my glide year.

Do you think I have a shot at R.F.? I didn't apply there this cycle. I so badly want to be a doctor! I'd love to go there!

Did you guys just look online regarding how to apply for on-campus housing, or did you get information via mail or email?? If so, how long did it take for them to send you this information?

the housing application came separately, after the acceptance, but there's no point in you waiting to fill it out - they send a paper application but also say that the same thing is online...

just go to www.rosalindfranklin.edu/housing and fill it out.

on that website, click on "prospective residents and guests" and then "application and contracting process 2005-2006"

I think it is difficult to tell anyone's situation and their chances of getting into any particular med school. I have heard from quite a few people who applied who had decent numbers and didn't get an interview to RF. The whole process is quite random. I believe the average MCAT for R.F. matriculants in 2004 was ~29. Since I have no idea about each part of your application I cannot be exactly sure your chances.

I do support your actions to retake the MCAT and say you should try to boost your score and reapply. Your work experience in the O.R. will support your interest in medicine so that will be a plus to your app for next year as well. I also recommend checking out the reapplicant forum to get some more good tips. Many people there are in the same boat of figuring out what they would like to do in the next year to beef up their applications. Good luck with everything!

I agree with Calizona. The process is pretty random, and it's hard to tell if you wil get an interview/acceptance from a particular school.

You definitely have good clinical experience. Just try to boost up your MCAT score a bit. If possible, try to have some research experience as well. Definitely try to get LORs from people who know you well (i.e.from O.R. people). And, write a good personal statement. And apply early

Good luck

when i asked how admissions works, this is what they told me: after your interview, they will review your application at the next monthly meeting (i believe that's the 15th of the month)....if you get accepted, they let you know right then (my letter was postmarked on the 16th of the month)....if not, then they just hold on to your app and review it again at the next meeting...etc etc....until you either get accepted or get on the official waitlist.

Will you be leaving "on campus" or in individual apts close to the school.
The "on campus" housing seems so expensive and I don't know why.
Is there something that they provide and other regular apts don't? Am I missing something?
I will be bringing my own car so I don't care if where I live is not across the street from the school.

most ppl who don't get into student housing live at the woodlands. I've heard some +'s and-'s about it. I will be attending Rosalind this fall in the AP program. I am very excited and look forward to meeting everyone. I have lived in Chicago for 7 years and know the city / suburbs well if anyone has any questions, let me know. The school is great and the probation will soon be a non issue.

I'm going to be an Orientation Advisor for next year, and have some info about that may be helpful to you guys.

As of right now, orientation week is scheduled to start July 25th. However, the school is still deciding whether to shorten orientation to 3 days or keep it as is. If that's the case, orientation will start Jully 27th. No matter when orientation officially starts, the white coat ceremony will be July 29th. First day of classes is August 1st. Orientation dates are the same for AP, and you pretty much go through the same type of sessions.

I can't answer any questions about housing, but they just gave info for continuing students about housing like 5 or 6 weeks ago I believe. I heard there's a waitlist for the woodlands, but you guys have to consider that woodlands don't require their residents to renew their lease until the month before their lease ends. Most lease ends June 30 or July 31st. Oh yeah, try to get Phase II. If they give you a Phase I..... don't take it. It's nasty. I don't know if there will be a lot of Phase II apts opening, but I know a lot of students are moving out of PhaseI at Woodlands into the dorms. I put up a post about housing options in the RF AP program thread in the post bacc forum if you guys want more suggestions.

Finally!! someone who has some info.
I want to know what the 1st yr class schedule is like. Will it be 8-5?
What are some of the 1st semester classes besides anatomy ofcourse; how are the classes structured?
What are some of the things you wish you had known prior to starting.
I'm assuming you're a student there since you are an orientation advisor. Forgive me if I'm wrong in my assumption.
Also, I got an apt in the "dorms" and I've seen pictures on line but how nice is it really?
Any other info you can render will be appreciated.

What about health insurance? Has anyone looked at the health plan yet? It seems expensive to me (especially since I have a sweet deal now).

Just got an e-mail today. It's official, the first day of orientation is July 27th and only 3 days. Lucky you as most of the sessions were boring with just a lot of talk/info we could have learned in 10 mins dragged out to an hour.

Health insurance..... If you have a nice packet, just submit proof you have it and they will not bill you for it. The prices were comparable to blue shield or $20 less a month for a similar package on an individual plan. The plan is Destiny Health, with 3 different plans. I might get the recommended plan as I noticed I don't get check ups on a regular basis if when I had to pay out of my pocket. That's bad coming from someone who wants to be a physician herself. Right now I'm paying $42 a month from a cali health ppo plan that covers only catastrophic (ie hospitalization and emergencies with a hefty deductable) or until I reach out of pocket costs of $3K or so a year. Catastrophic insurance is all the school requires you to carry. They also have a great dental and vision package as well which I plan i purchasing.

About classes: RELAX enjoy your summer as school will start in 2 months! Ask questions during orientation. As far as books go, I can't speak for the M1's as I was an AP. I think you need the histo, ICM and netter for anatomy (don't buy it yet...... because AMSA can get you a sweet deal...... free if u join ama or something like that) As far as MCB, Physio and Embryo, the notes are really good, and I only used an old book as a reference.

Thnks for all the info! I was just wondering if you knew what was going on with the probation status. I loved the school when I visitied but I am just a little afraid of what will happen is they lose accreditation. Also, what us better in terms of housing, the university apartments or woodlands for a single bedroom? I got offered a single bedroom on campus but I don't know which ones are nicer. I have seen the woodland apartments and they are really nice but how are the university apartments? Thank you so much for the updates :)

For those interested, I went to basically all the different apartment communities around the school and decided on Northern Crossing in Waukegan. Its only about a 5-8 minute drive. They had the best and newest looking interiors. Its a gated community as well. I thought about the woodlands and the dorms, but decided that for about the same amount of money I'd rather have something nicer. Plus I think the little distance will be beneficial for my study habits. I'm sure people might have not gotten the same impressions from the other apartments, but this is just from what I saw. I went to woodlands, but they wanted me to sign on an apartment but did not have anything to show me besides the little pamphlet. That irked me. So anyway, if anyone has any specific questions about the other off campus places, PM me. Oh and thanks the Orchid for the updates on orientation.

Orchid 209

Go with the dorms! It's about the same amount of money. The 1 BR's in Phase II are around 970 a month I think. The same as the dorm. The dorm's rent includes gas, cable and internet service. Only live in Woodlands if you get Phase II and a two bedroom/two bath apt so u can save money. In woodlands, they may give you Phase I, which is totally not worth it compared to the dorms.

Probation status, honestly? I don't think anybody here is worried about it. I'm not. Haven't heard anybody mention it since orientation of 2004.

I was in N.Chicago a few days early for my interview, and spent time doing the tourist thing. I also drove around campus, and someone was moving out of the dorms... being the overly social person I am, I walked up, introduced myself, and basically peppered them with questions. I talked to someone walking by (who had just finished being an MS-1... yay for him!) and also the family of the person moving out.

They offered to let me into the dorms to look around, so I jumped at the opportunity. I looked at a 1-bedroom dorm (which was SOOOOO *not* a "dorm" as I recalled from living in them at Cal Poly). The entrance-way opened directly into a living room, with a very small kitchen (kitchenette?) to the immediate left of the doorway. The bedroom opened off of the livingroom, and included a small bathroom. The dorms were new, had nice high cielings, and I was suitably impressed.

Unfortunately, I'm both sure that the dorms are full, and equally sure that I'd miss my cat... so (if i get in... supposed to hear tomorrow???) it's apartments for me. Woodland looked nice, but pets are only allowed in Phase II. I actually liked Forest Pointe, and they have a deal going... high 800's for a 1 bedroom (a decrease of 100 a month). They're 7 minutes to RFUMS (which i didn't believe, but checked... they were right! :D ). I didn't look at any other apartment complexes.

What I liked about Forest Pointe was that due to proximity to Abbot, they have a high percentage of professional tennants, and the place was a freakin ghost town during business hours on a week day... meaning the occupants were out working. They don't accept section 8, which was good too.

just a suggestion. If you have since moved out of your local/mailing address listed on AMCAS, I highly recommend that you give the school an update. Hi guys/gals,

Just finished my first year at Rosalind Franklin/CMS and will be an M2 next year.

With regards to some Q's:

1) In my opinion and that of many others, the dorms are 'nicer' than the woodlands. I prefer living there, you get your own bathroom (even if you share the apartment with a roomate) and the buildings are very new and well designed. Here's a helpful hint: if you can try to get buildings 101 or 201 because they are abit closer to the main buildings (building 301 is just behind these 2). Price wise the dorms/woodlands are pretty equal when you factor EVERYTHING in (gas, heat, a/c etc...)

2) For those of you still deciding between schools, I was in the same boat last year between 2 schools. I chose CMS because of its amazing facilities (anatomy lab), financial aid and staff support, looking back I am VERY glad I made this decision. I honestly feel that I'm getting an amazing education at CMS and feel that this is a top notch medical school. Yes, it is pricey, as most private med schools in the US, but I really feel that the money is worth while the education.

3) As for those taking Anatomy over the summer, VERY SMART, our first year last year was very front loaded, and I wished I could have gotten Anatomy completed in the summer. HOWEVER, I do feel that Anatomy is better learned over a long time period, it is a very intense course (in terms of lots of memorization).

4) North Chicago is a nice peaceful area, you won't be distracted while studying. I also find the campus very safe. You do need a car though to get to the grocery store and back, so if you don't have one get to know people that do!

5) and yes, don't forget about the immunizations, get those out of the way as soon as possible

6) finally..... as for textbooks, I STRONGLY recommend that you wait until your classes begin to buy books. I know every year there is an M1/M2 book sale at the beginning of the year as well. I bought many books last summer than I didn't need, however some did come in useful (ie: Anatomy atlases!). SO WAIT until classes begin to really see if you need books.

OK if anyone has any questions feel free to ask :)

Hey i heard at least 5 former AP's that are going to decline their acceptances and go to another med school, so that may potentially open some spots. Declaration of intents should be all in by next week, so may be you guys will hear some news. I'm pretty sure there are always a ton of people accepted at CMS and waiting to get off of a waitlist elsewhere. The only bad thing is our start date is so early (orientation July 27th!) so u know.....

Good luck, hope you hear something in the next couple of weeks.

So I've been in constant communication with David in the admissions office, for those of you who may be on waitlists I'm sure you know who I'm talking about. The list isn't moving as fast as I'd hoped, but last I heard they needed 7 more drops to begin taking students from the waitlist. Still holding out for a CMS spot =).

Anyway, I've been accepted into their AP program and am definitely going to be in the North Chicago area next year, but I don't have a lot of time to shop around for living arrangements. Northern Crossing sounds like the best bet, as I've talked to woodlands and the dorms. Dorm waitlist is about 100 strong, so thats Out of the question. Woodlands has zero one bedrooms available. Anybody have any other recommendations on where to look? The only other place I've seen mentioned repeatedly is Northern Crossing.

And if anybody is looking for a roommate pm me. 22/m/ns. Currently debating the monetary consequences of living alone, but as I had the roommate from hell this year... (he has a fifth of whiskey or case of beer a day habit and refuses to smoke outside, this being said you can imagine his hygeine habits) I'm not opposed to a roommate, as long as you're easygoing, and a non-smoker. That's all I care about.

Oh, and I'm from Northwest Chicago area (and I bleed cubbie blue) so any of you cali kids curious about just how bad the snow might be around there or whatever you want to know, well yeah. pm away.

Your Corolla should be fine in the snow. Front wheel drive is a plus, at least better than rear wheel, but all wheel or 4 wheel is best. You don't have to go buy a jeep to survive a winter in Chicago, as I manage to pilot my neon without much a problem. My only advice to you is be very cautious your first time driving in the snow. Maybe go to an empty parking lot and practice if you're really nervous, but no worries, you'll be just fine.

is RF going to send us the paper version of the orientation package?

Paper version?? I have not recieved any version. Where we supposed to have been e-mailed something pertaining to orientation?
The only thing I saw on their web site is the class schedule.
What up?

i'm wondering the same thing.. at least until i get off it... but side note, should we be working on amcas for reapplying? i know it'd be dumb to submit amcas, burn $1000, then get off the waitlist and find all that work unnecessary. but i think it'd be worst to never get off the waitlist, and then find myself submitting amcas late july, early august, in the "applied late" pile... shoot.. LOSE LOSE SITUATION!!

Today I called the admission's office and was told that 5 people have to drop before they give acceptances off of the waitlist. So this may or may not happen in a week or two.

Echinoderm -- you could submit amcas to just one or two schools and then add more if you don't get in. That way you won't lose all the money. Or, you can start working on it and not submit till the end of July.

ocean11, do you have any recommendations for off-campus housing? I'll be down next week to look for a place. I've looked at the apartments listed on the website using apartments.com.

I'm not going to be moving until right before school starts (i.e. July 25!! ), but I think that it would be awesome if a bunch of us got together either right before or during orientation. I'm not really sure what orientation has for us socially, but I think it would be fun. :)

I move in July 22nd up in Northern Crossing (AP still waiting on a CMS spot). Looking forward to orientation and meeting all of you. Despite being from about 45 minutes away I don't know anybody up in the waukegan area, as I am from Schaumburg. Keep me posted on any get togethers. In addition I'll be in Schaumburg all week this week, and on campus somewhat tracking down financial aid people, anybody in the area wants to meet up PM me. Again, if anybody want's to know anything about the area, feel free to contact me. :)

There will be a social event every night of orientation and saturday evening as well. Save your money to relax before the craziness begins.

the events are: going to cubby bear (a hangout place i think), individual group events depending each person's liking, going to a bar/club, and Navy Pier saturday followed by clubbing. I think the club on saturday may be a little pricey, but it's unlimited drinks.

I'm going to MCW. I got the call when I was 1/2 hour away from looking at apartments in Waukegan/Gurnee. Craziness. MCW is way cheaper for me since I'm a WI resident. Good luck to all of you waiting!! :luck: It's a great school. I feel bad saying no to them. :o I'm overnighting my letter tomorrow.

You should call the admissions office for CMS (remember to mention to them you are in AP) or talk to Dr. Pullen. I'm assuming you don't have to retake the MCATs, but I'd ask just to be on the safe side.
