Good chance I will end up there this fall and extremely excited about it! Any of you guys planning on taking a second look at the school anytime soon?

i am definitely going back to check it out (but i'm definitely going either way). one of my closest friends is currently a 3rd year, so hopefully i can get a little personalized tour.

Yeah i have two friends there myself, both of whom are first years. All I have been getting is really positive feedback which makes me that much more enthusiastic about attending in the fall. I heard that this year's match was pretty nuts too...

When I stayed over with a student prior to my interview last Fall, I absolutely loved the school. Like a few people here, I am seriously considering Einstein, but am still waiting on other factors (mainly cost), and so am about 50% sure about going there.

Has there been any word about housing? Does anyone know if there is an official second look weekend? Maybe I missed an email or notice about the second look.

Around 75% sure I'm heading to Einstein, pending waitlists for my state schools. So where's everyone from? I'm from California. Gonna be a big change, but does sound exciting. I'm waiting on housing too. Don't want to be stuck in the apartments away from the main ones, like some had to go through last year.

I'm 85% sure I will be there next fall, pending one waitlist which I probably won't take over AECOM anyway.. I was at second look for the MST program a couple weeks ago. I like it.

Currently I'm a Texas resident and the cost of the state school is the major strength to staying here. However, i was born and raised in the NYC, so I strongly desire to return......

Hi from Florida.....I am fairly sure I'll end up there next year also. Just waiting on the state schools but really have a desire to get out and in all my interviews Einstein seems like the perfect place to do so. Thanks for starting this thread by the way. It'll help as time comes closer to making the decision for me and I am sure others too. One thing I've noticed from most students at Einstein is the camaraderie between them and I have also been able to see in the students who have been accepted to Einstein. Looks to me like eventhough their interview day was weak as far as orientation they do a good job at seeking out students who are academically qualified but are also down to earth. All in all seems to be a great place to learn. Well hopefully there will be more to come from everyone and the Bronx will be our new home come Aug. '05.

See you all later,

ST

Did everyone get the email with the 2005 Match List? Pretty impressive, but seems like most people matched back in NY, especially in the more competitive residencies. I'm a bit concerned as I want to move back to CA for my post-graduate training. Nonetheless, students matched into some excellent programs. Now where is my fin aid package and housing info?!

Hey, I just saw the 2005 match and I was completely blown away. Three to radiation onc and matching neurosurgery at Yale is pretty ridiculous. Needless to say, seeing the list has got me really excited about AECOM. And Uegis, what specialties are you considering b/c it seemed to me like there was a fair amount of matches out west in some of the big fields. I think the reason that matches were so skewed with respect to NYC hospitals is that most of the students from AECOM are from the surrounding tristate area, but I could be wrong...

Uegis
03-29-2005, 03:37 PM
Haha, on second look, there are a lot of matches in California to some good programs like UCLA and UCSF in internal medicine. I don't know what I want to do yet, but do know I want to go back to California to practice. There was one match for rad onc USC. Sweet! I can't wait to meet all of you guys. Hopefully we'll be able to find each other amongst the huge class.

Uegis, I actually spoke to one of the women in the admissions office about why so many of the students match in and around NY...and she said that I have to remember that a lot of them are from there...You see, I'm from florida but probably would want to match up north as well (I think that I'll be more interested in location than prestige when the time comes, thoguh both would be nice lol!)...Anyway, just a thought...

Thanks for the insight Sasha. It's true that a lot of people are from NY , but a huge majority of them are also from CA. My tourguides, both from CA, said that NY and CA competes for representation in the class each year, jokingly of course, haha. I am still leaning towards Einstein, but Rochester has been real good to me recently too. Decisions decisions.

I'm between my state school and Einstein--probably leaning towards Einstein because I'm looking for a change of scenery (not that the bronx offers the nicest, but what can you do?), but also waiting on money/housing/etc.

I want to hear everyone's thoughts on the location--anyone have a chance to look around the neighborhood outside of the campus? I've heard rumors of a Barnes and Nobles but have yet to acutally see it. :)

I am in the same boat. Only my state school is a bit south of yours. It would be such a big move, but I'd like to get back to the tri state area. Does anyone know how many students receive the scholarships that were mentioned in the most recent email from the financial aide guy? Money is definitely a huge factor for me. Also, if anyone does some recon around the school I would love info on what is around. Good luck to everyone!!

Uh-oh, did I miss something? Could someone PM me the email that jdovez mentioned? I haven't received an email from Einstein except for the one from Ms. Kerrigan this Tuesday. Thanks!

Is there really a Barnes and Noble nearby the school? Are there any grocery stores (not convenience stores) nearby, too? (Not convenience stores.) I heard people would need to drive out 15 minutes or so to get groceries.

They pick who can apply to the scholarships. I didn't get the email either. I was wondering the same thing about the B and N. I heard its pretty far away, even by bus. And its not in the safest place at night. This is from the aecommunity website ( www.aecommunity.com ).

I got a regular mail about financial need scholarships going up in cost but did not get this most recent email. Can someone post it? Also, I've heard the grocery story is walking distance but you'd have to make a few trips because you can't really CARRY all your groceries lol! (wheeling suitcase anyone? ;))....but I live in the BNs here at home and hope that the one there is a decent bus ride away...I'll be ALL over that! :)

Yea, for the financial need, the most they give is 2500, which isnt much at all considering that tuition is so high. At least they offer loans, but I wonder what the interest are on them and if they are subsidized.

Does anyone know how roommates are chosen yet? I have some weird habits so I want to make sure I am compatible with who I live with.

They're not that weird. Just that I shower in the morning in addition to at night and some people dont like that. And also, I'm a clean freak. I can't even stand water next to the sink. I guess they are more pet peeves than weird habits.

Man I'm really sorry about the previous post. I must have email on the brain. I meant mail (I received a letter 2 days ago saying their scholarships have gone up from 2500 to 3000 max and their einstein loans have increased by a bit too). As for showering, its a good thing to do. I had a suitemate in college nicknamed "stinky"......*shudder*....he would drink a lot but didn't have much else to do with water.

Thanks for the clear-up! And thanks for the info on housing/roommate.

As for a car, if I do decide to go to Einstein, I would like to bring my car. However, I heard Einstein was also tight on parking and that it might be a long wait to get student parking in their garage. I don't feel comfortable leaving my car on the street for a prolonged period of time --especially if I'm only going to be using it for infrequent trips to get groceries and such. (I don't know why food has been such a prominent matter on my mind today.) Anyway, I heard about this parking situation when I talked to my student host back in Sept. '04. Maybe it has changed, but I doubt it. I also remember hearing that the monthly fee for student parking was comparitively cheap --I don't remember the figure though. It might've been about $150/month?

I second the 65 a month for parking. VERY CHEAP. As for me, if I come I will have my significant other in tow and she will need a car to get to work (I am assuming).....so......I think I would need a space. Also, I don't know about the BX, but in other parts of the city just FINDING parking is a mission.

Quick question... I was just looking at my checking account and I realized my deposit check for Einstein hasn't been cashed... I sent it back in January so I'm wondering if it's their policy not to cash checks until after May 15 or if it's just mine that hasn't been cashed???

Anyone else not have their checks cashed? I know I've got my spot reserved because I've communicated with the admissions office recently but I'm really curious about the check. Thanks!

Mine has also not been cashed in many months. I think its easier if we withdraw not to cash it and just void it than to cash it and have to reissue one. That would be my guess anyway. Has anyone else gone to get all the bloodwork they require?? I went and the doc said it would be over 400 bucks!!! and insurance wouldnt pay cause I didnt "need" any of the tests. Hey there, no I left Davis almost 2 years ago when I decided to do medicine and forego research.

Guys, if you havent checked them out, the shots are some weird ones. I spoke with the doctor in depth about them (it was at the UT-Houston clinic and the guy is very involved with the school so he was trying to convince me to go there). In evaluating though, we need antibody tests for varicella, measles, mumps, rubella and for hep B. We also need a surface antigen test for hep B (the doc and I were like WTF?? If you have the antibody there is no need for a surface antigen test). You also need a CBC and metabolic profile. You may have the CBC and met profile (although they may be too old for einstein if its more than a year out from when you will begin classes, but thats pure speculation). However, each of these antibody tests, which you most likely have not had (you prob had the hep B immunization, but there is usually no need to double check that you got the antibodies given the series of shots). Each of these tests down here in cheap ass Texas is about 50 bucks +/-. That's a hefty chunk of change. I talked with a friend of mine who went to Davis undergrad and is now an MSII at aecom and he said he dropped over 250 at the clinic in davis for the series of shots.

Anyway, I am going to wait until I make my final decision. If anyone comes up with any brilliant ways around spending that much, PLEASE let me know. Thanks.

There was an email from Dean Kerrigan w/the subject Welcome Back to Einstein. Its sort of an informal revisit (dinner, stay overnight, go to classes next day). Thats weird that you didn't get it. well, i'm not a minority student... since the subject is "welcome back to einstein, new york" i'd say it might be for NY students? but that's just a guess. here's the text of the email for those who didn't get it.

Subject: WELCOME BACK TO EINSTEIN, NEW YORK!

Dear Incoming Student:
We'd like to invite you to come back to Einstein on Sunday, April 17th, for an informal dinner/party with our first and second year students, who will be your hosts in our Faculty Club.* You are also invited to visit the second-year’s classes on Monday, April 18th .
Many of you have already been hosted by our students on the eve of your interview and have gotten to know our students well; others have not had the opportunity.
We hope that those of you who are available, will avail yourself of the opportunity to take a second, more relaxed look at Einstein.* If you can only join in for a segment of the weekend, let us know.
Some of you have already scheduled a second look weekend.* If so, you need not read further unless you'd like to return yet again!
Those of you who are available and would like to join in, need only email us at joanb@aecom.yu.edu.* There are about 20 openings for overnight housing with our students, if you are traveling from a great distance and would like to stay for classes on Monday.
Let us know if you have any special requirements.* Please call Admissions at 718-430-2106 and ask for Ms. Lorraine Longo or Ms. Joan Baldassari.
Please R.S.V.P. by Monday, April 11th .
We look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you.

But for all those who can go, can you post about how it went, your impressions, etc, and how it has affected your decisions? I'd love to hear your thoughts. I'm still very indecisive in terms of where I want to be this Fall.

I'm a current AECOM student, a first year from upstate new york. I can answer any questions you have - pm me. Also, I'd like to invite you to post on the boards on www.AECOMmunity.com which is a really nice guide for new students.

Congratulations on your acceptance! I choose this school from a long list and am very happy with my choice.

Seriously, I love nyc so much and I have a lot of friends, some fam etc there, so it is the natural location for me, but the cost is pretty staggering. On the other hand, I am not so fond of Texas in general (being polite), and although the people are nice, they are not, for the most part, my "cup of tea". This makes it a difficult choice given that tuition is about 1/3.5 as much as at einstein. Alas the decisions of life. If you have any epiphany please let me know.

There are a number of cali people there for sure, a good friend of mine from davis goes there and he says cali is very well represented. I think a half decent way to gauge the number of cali folk would be to look at the match list and see who ranks back to cali. I would say its safe to assume that that number represents 50-90% of the number of cali people in the class (not a great estimate, but ballpark). I think the % just picking randomly off the top of my head is probably closer to 60-70, but who knows.

jdovez,
if you really don't like the texans, etc....and won't be happy there...then its worth the price difference--its only debt, after all...however, if you can stand it, it probably is better to have less debt whenever possible, especially if you're not prepared to go into one of the higher paying fields---being most interested in primary care, myself, I figured I'd never get out of debt if I got into it! (while not really true in any case, its how i felt)

You have essentially summed up the bulk of my dilemma. I also am interested in primary care, and am very cognizant of my financial situation at all times. Hence the debt would be weighty for me, but would it outweigh the benefit of being back in nyc and around friends, etc.? I don't know. Oh well, I guess I have more meditation to perform.

I think on my interview day someone told us that every year CA and NY are "competing" for being the most represented. So I guess that means that there are almost as many people from CA as there are from NY.

OK, so I am trying to justify spending enough money to go to aecom. I really like the general location, the philosophy, the students, etc but thats some dough. I was wondering if anyone else is in the same boat as me, ie they have no money saved for school, and they are not going to receive 1 dime of support from anyone but the loan agencies. Are you guys cool with taking out THAT much money? I still shudder to think that I may go into roughly 240K in debt plus my 20K undergrad. *shudder* ....see there I go shuddering again!!

Its a lot of money, I don't know if I would really be able to rationalize it if I had other choices that didn't cost as much. The fact of the matter is that the debt is NOT permanent and it WILL end...You could also always do the primary care route where they take care of your debt--have you thought about that?

THanks for the input. I have considered the primary care money, but I am not 100% sure that is what I want to do. The last thing I want is to be indebted to a position which I do not want. And they charge substantial penalties if you opt out. Therefore, I don't feel that it would be prudent to commit at this stage.

I also just spoke to a friend and he told me that the consolidation laws are changing (he's starting residency next year). He said that at least at his school, after 2006, when you consolidate you can no longer get a fixed rate. That could result in 10s of thousands of additional debt over the life of the repayment (if not more).

I spoke to my Aunt Alberta about the course...She actually took it last year. She said:

It gave me the
opportunity to get comfortable with Einstein, and get settled in and to explore
NYC. And it does help a little bit for the real courses, and you dont have to
study very much. Plus, you get to meet 50 of your classmates and that was
really nice. There are also orientation activities planned so you have a good
time, you meet a lot of people, and study a little (very little) :)

A lot of people who didnt take it said that they preferred to spend there last
time before med school traveling or chilling at home.

Am I happy I took it, and would i have taken it again? Yup.
And I think that was the consensus for most people.

That is what I'm told by an MS II buddy of mine. He did it and said it was alright. You learn a little and don't really have to study or anything, but if you have other summer plans, he said go for those because you'll be learning for a long time. And if any of my future AECOMers can offer some advice, that will be appreciated. Rochester just offered me a 26k/yr scholarship, which seemed like an offer I can't refuse. But I had my heart set on AECOM and wanted to live in NYC. I think AECOM aid is capped so I wouldn't expect them to give me much. What would you guys do if you were in my position?

Its a tough call. How much is rochester? I am in a somewhat similar situation with the option of going to the 8th least expensive medical school in the nation (10K tuition is basically like a huge scholarship), but it is in an area in which I am not likely to be happy over the next 4 years. Furthermore, I have a lot of relationships with people in nyc, so essentially it comes down to cost vs location. It is difficult to turn down having little or no loans and instead knowing you will borrow in all likelihood greater than 200K, but you have to think about your future. Also, depending on where you want to do residency different schools have different reps, and that is something to look at. I was pretty impressed with einstein's match, so I am pretty sure (for today at least) I am strongly leaning toward owing a buttload to be where I want to be. Good luck, its a really tough call.

Hi,

My mailing address is just outside of Boston. I got my financial aid letter yesterday. It basically detailed how much "scholarship" I was getting (a few thousand, but that's better than nothing!), how much Einstein loan they could offer me (with interest rate of 7%...which is comparably huge at this point compared to other interest rates now) and that was it. I didn't read it carefully enough and all the details are at home (I'm at work right now). I remember a short sentence about having to apply for Federal loans.. and I got very confused by that because I had already turned in my FAFSA in February and I thought that Einstein would at least be able to say how much I will be getting in Direct or Stafford loans. So yes, very very confused right now. I will have alook at it again once I get home since I didn't read it so carefully the first time around. Did anyone else get a letter who can clear up this confusion?

Thanks!

To answer my own quesion :D , the prep course is for all incoming students and is optional. There is an exam at the end but it doesn't count for anything (just for your own feedback I guess). Of the students I talked to, some said that it helped them to get back into studying, etc since they had been away from school before coming to AECOM; others said it helped them refresh on these subjects; other said the subjects were pointless but it was a really good experience because it was more of a social/get to know your classmates sort of thing. So I guess the experience was different depending on the student, but they all seemed to enjoy it/find it useful in some way. So, I would recommend going! (unless of course you have other plans, in which case I guess it isn't that big a deal)

Overall, my experience at Revisit was very positive. All the students I met were definitely happy/excited to be there. They also raved about the clinical experiences; they have a Intro to Clinical Medicine course first year where they have case conferences (to relate basic sciences to relevant clinical cases), as well as a preceptorship where each students gets matched with a physician (except EM, where there are 2 students/physician). Students get matched into 1st or 2nd choice specialties, and they all seem to have good experiences. Basically they tell you to go in w/a patient and interview them (no physical exams). It seems like a really good experience and a big help towards 3rd year.

hmmm, what else can I tell you...oh, students go down to manhattan relatively frequently/easily; there is a bus right in front of the housing (speaking of housing, I'll tell you about that too!) which takes you to the subway in 5-10 minutes. There is also an Express Manhattan bus on which you can get to Manhattan in ~40 min. Going to Manhattan on the subway is ok, but most people didn't recommend coming back to AECOM on the subway. You can get a cab back for ~$40, which isn't so bad if there's 4 people-only $10/person. The area around AECOM was nice too (and it was a beautiful day which made it seem really nice). I think if you go 5 blocks in one direction it gets bad (?). but they have nice italian restaurants in the area, I was told. There is a pathmark nearby for groceries...not much to do in the area. The area around the medical school is pretty safe.

Housing! It was great! All the apartments-2 bdrms, 3 bdrms, or studio were all very spacious and low rent. I think its like 275 for 3 bdrm, 330 for 2, and 480 for studio. If you want a studio, you have to put yourself on the waitlist; unless you're mstp, in which case you're guaranteed a studio. Also each of the three apt buildings have 2 penthouses on the top (28th) floor - so 6 total. They were beautiful! Its 3 bdrms on two floors and there is a balcony from where you can get a beautiful view of the city. The penthouses are handed down, so you have to become best buddies with someone thats moving out to get it.

I'm probably leaving a lot of other stuff out, but thats all I can remember for now! feel free to ask q's!

Fee for Year I and II increases from 2,150 to 2,250

they didnt say when, but whenever we do get it, you should send it back asap. sometimes, if they run out of space, you may get stuck in a studio w/someone else for about a month before you can move into your own apt's - I think this is because sometimes the 4th yrs are a little slow in moving out.

Sounds interesting for sure, I guess it all depends on the timing. With that said, does anyone know when the earliest we could move into housing would be? If I attend, I need to plan a cross country move with my gf (I'm sure many of you are in my boat), and I want to start researching different cost options but it depends on the timing I'm guessing. I also want to know exactly how long I can work for before I must quit.

On another note, I got the financial aid yesterday and it said I will apply for the 8500 in sub stafford and 10000 in unsub stafford. Then when I get registered, I can apply for more unsub loans. I was confused by the wording. It didn't say that I could apply for the remainder of the unsub stafford after registration. Does anyone know if there is any chance one would not be able to get the full unsub stafford loans? Thanks.

For those who got some grant money from Einstein (about a few thousand dollars), do you know if 2nd, 3rd, 4th year's financial aid package will be similar to what they offered for your first year? Has anyone asked the FA people this? To me, even a few thousand each year, would make a huge difference.

Thanks everyone! (I'm still undecided about where to go.)

I turned down my two state schools, Robert Wood and NJ Med and the waitlist at BU.

Did you go to the "second look" dinner? That's what sold me on the school. The students I met were SO interesting--they came from all different places and schools, had interests outside of medical school they had all done/were planning neat trips during the summer between first and second year. Happily, Einstein offers help paying (significant help paying) if you can relate it to medicine. I know that may seem like a small thing, but I felt it was indicative of how the administration at Einstein treats their students; they really want to take care of you and do all that they can to make your four years there good. That's what did it for me. :)

I turned down Mt. Sinai, NYU, BU, Tufts, Emory, SUNY SB & SUNY Downstate... I'm really happy with Einstein!

As for the white coat ceremony... I think Einstein is one of the few schools that DOES NOT recite the hippocratic oath. I think the jewish religious affiliation might have something to do with not wanting students to be swearing to Pagan gods. Who knows, it's not a big deal.

OK, so I just got the housing info... it's all straightforward, $100 nonrefundable deposit, application w/ roommate questionare and a waitlist application for studio appartments (or 1 & 2 bedrooms if you're married with children). Also, there's a pamphlet included with some useful info (I guess this is what they were waiting on being printed).

I really wish studios were available to everone in a lottery or something... seems unfair to favor MD/PhDs... Oh well, I should be used to it by now!

PS - Rooms are unfurnished, I never really thought about it but I guess I'll have to be buying some furniture!

Hello, so the email answer I got from Lloyd Greenberg is:

That's a relief --hey, a few thousand dollars matters!

Oh yeh, so what other schools did people give up to choose Einstein. I'm very curious myself. I just can't decide between the few schools I am holding onto and it's really bothering me. I even had bad dreams about making a decision over the weekend.

Perhaps we should try to correlate how many of us have B of A? I too have it and that 1.3 miles sounds like a decent distance (it would be nice if we can find a B of A atm somewhere closer!!).

No no......I think the way it works is that you fill out the app and that applies you for a split 2BR apt. You get 1 BR another student gets the other. If you fill out the waitinglist, that is for couples or married people who want their OWN apt....be it a studio, 1BR or 2BR. Basically, if you are single, you are going to get an apt with another student. I'm pretty sure thats whats up.

Yea, the housing application is a bit confusing. If they didn't tell us during the interview, I still wouldn't know what they were trying to say..

I was wondering, can we specify if we want a 1bdr/2 person, or 2bdr/3 person setup? Which ones are you guys picking?

And can single students get on the waitling list for studios now? They sent a card with the application.

loudawg

I requested a 1bdr/2 person setup because I figured 1 less person sharing a bathroom is a good thing... I just wrote in the additional comments section that that is what I wanted. As for the waitlist card, I went ahead and sent it in... the earlier they get it the sooner you'll get a studio! I just didn't fill in the info I didn't have yet (like e-mail and current apt. number).

Another question... the app. asked if we would be participating in the biochem class. I marked yes because I want to participate but does anyone know when we'll be getting info about that? Also, I know it's not manditory but do you have to be invited in order to participate or is it open to everyone?? Thanks!

I guess I had just assumed I'd be rooming with another M1 but I got an M3 roommate... I guess this could be a good or bad thing but I'd be interested to hear what other assignments people got.

Also got the application for the biochem course: August 1 - 12 from 9am - 1pm. Basically you just have to agree to show up to the classes and take the exams (which don't count toward anything). I think I'm in... I never took biochem or cell bio.

I think living in the Bronx won't be that bad. For the most part you won't have the time to "see" where you live anyway...you'll be doing the class<> dorm routine. But for post exam you can enjoy the city...and having spent four years there already...let me assure you it is an unparalleled experience. Actually I even prefer Einstein's location to that of NYU, b/c of the following reason:
1. The city does get too crazy and it is nice to keep a distance
2. Since we are in the Bronx, we will be a tighter knit group of students...as opposed to the city where we will all scatter (as is the case for my undergrad)
3. We get decent living conditions while still remaining in NYC.

But after all you should choose what fits your lifestyle best.
As my mom told me all med. Schools are a great choice, but no matter what you end up choosing at some points in your life you will still regret it.

As someone who has lived in the Bronx for more than 10 years, it is always disappointing to see threads where people explicitly or implicitly bash the Bronx.

Wends if you believe that the living conditions in the Bronx are deplorable and you are worried about your safety, then by all means go to Jefferson. I see that this issue concerns you as I've read your comments on this site and the Accept09 e-mail list. If you don't feel safe and/or comfortable, then you won't be happy at Einstein.

Sinephra, I'm assuming you had good intentions with your "you won't have time to see where you live" statement but you are only reinforcing the stereotypes of the Bronx being a scary dangerous place. As someone who knows the Bronx, the Morris Park area is one of the better areas of the Bronx. I've been in that area many times and I've never been shot at, been approached by a drug user, approached by a prostitute, accosted by masked men... [insert any Bronx nightmare stereotypes here].

In my opinion, if you'll be in the Bronx for 4 years, you should get to know the borough. It shouldn't just be a conduit to Manhattan! How about going for a run in Van Cortlandt Park, going out for dinner in City Island, experiencing the ethnic fair on Fordham Rd, going to a Yankees game, visiting the world famous Bronx Zoo or the Botanical Gardens?

There is so much more to the Bronx than the negative stereotypes. If you're willing to see pass the bad hype, then you'll have a great four years at Einstein AND the Bronx. Hope this helps.

is everyone guaranteed on campus housing? i hope im not too late in applying...the letter was sent to my permanent home and I cant go back till after my grad in the beginning of june....i think the 3 br apartments are an awesome deal!

That's freaking sweet!

I think everyone is guaranteed housing. Get someone to send in the housing form for you. I told my brother to do it for me also since mine was sent to permanent address like yours.

reggae girl, i didnt mean to imply that i think the bronx is deplorable or unsafe. please do not mistake my concerns about my living area for med schools as negativity towards the bronx. for undergrad i spent 4 years in a small town and found it stifling, i wanted a city experience for the next 4 years of my life. im concerned about having things to do on a weekend, having more than 3 choices of going to a bar/club, etc. the area around a school is very important to me as my life is not encompassed by studying and ive learned to hard way that the city a school one goes to has a huge part in the experience of going to that school. this is where im coming from.

Hey wends, no hard feelings. If you're looking for bars, you'll definitely find a few in the Bronx. But I must say, Manhattan has better bars and clubs than the Bronx :D I look forward to meeting you and everyone else in August. Maybe we can do something fun in the Bronx ;)

Good lord, I'm so borin' compared to the lot of you. I'd send my "hello world" email, but I don't know what to say. As tempting as the subject line of "Hail to thee, Champions!" is, and detailing my exploits as the living incarnation of Count Chocula, I'll have to be Bland Man, the Uninteresting.

Seriously though, this group is gonna be fun to be around.

I thought the exact same thing. Felt like I am the only one that doesn't play an instrument, sing, and traveled to a dozen foreign countries, haha. You're right though, looks like a fun group to hang with. Can't wait!

locki and ugeis, im sure you're interesting and special as well! we all downplay our own uniqueness, but I do have to agree that our class is filled with amazing people! maybe some of it will rub off on me...im pretty bland too lol.

it seems like there will be a NYC get together....but I think for us Westcoasters, we should do a pre-get together in Cali! Can anyone say Disney Land?

hey reggae girl...I apologies if I came off harsh but I was leaning more towards the general atmosphere, not any shooting or robbing.
However, I do think that compared to a small pretty town the Einstein area...or many other big city areas, can look depressing...especially in cold and rainy weather. It is on those middle-of-the-week days that you become grateful that your apartment is across the street.

Having said that, I think it would be awesome to live those rainy streets behind and go to Cali. for a visit. It has been on my to-do list for a while :D

Hotels?:

Anyone know decent/safe/cheap hotels in the area right around the med school? My parents are looking for somewhere to stay for a night or two when they come up with me...We were thinking there must be somewhere decent to stay very nearby for example if a family travels to have something done at AECOM's hospitals...right?

Thanks!

In the 3 bedroom option you will have 2 roommates...t(they ask you if you want someone vegetarian, kosher, etc...and some other questions about your habits and preferences)...there is a waitlist for the studio and 1 br...

i haven't gotten my roommate info yet but at least one person has, i thijnk...

There's a Howard Johnson Inn around a mile away. It isn't in the nicest area, but decent. Short cab ride away from the school. Cheap too, around 60 bucks/night.
Again, not in the best area, but close to school.

My housing assignment said the appartment is available starting July 1. I assume if you want it that early though you have to pay for rent for all of July. They let you decide when you want to move in though so I went for July 15... I figure that gives me 2 weeks to move in slowly and get settled before the biochem class starts.

Is Loudawg the only one that got the apt. assignment?

Anyway, I got the form for the biochem course. I've been out of school for two years, but I was a biochem major. I'm contemplating whether to take it or not. I just want to get settle in before school starts and buy furniture etc. Who else is taking it?

Does anyone have a minute to let me know the requirements for married housing application...I did not get the forms yet.
Mainly I want to know if you MUST be already married...or are lease contract and bank account sufficient?
... and if you are married is housing guaranteed?
Thanks

Hey there,
Well, I am not going to the school, but I had submitted this info. Basically, its ok if you are not married, but they want as MUCH paperwork as you can give them showing your committed relationship. I talked to some current students and they kept telling me to give them EVERYTHING possible. So, I guess do the same. Any shared utility bills, shared lease, shared accounts, shared cars or whatnot. You do not have to be married, but Im sure it doesnt hurt. I also spoke to Dean purpura and he said not to worry, if I submit everything I would be fine. The person who deals with the housing information is Joe Zagreda in the housing office, so if you are unsure, I would suggest calling him directly. There is also a woman in the office that deals with incoming students (I forget her name though), and she would be a good one to contact as well (you can call the office and tell them you are incoming and have would like to speak with someone that handles incoming students). Good luck to you!
