Hey Red,

Should ALL the LECOM class of '09 reply, or just the Americans? Oh, and by the way, the FAB has their eye on you... so if you still wanna be cloned, you better think twice about it!

Speak up M.D.s.!.. "Wait... you forgot D.O.s!"

I will be joining you this year at LECOM. What pathway are you enrolled in? I have been kinda curious where everyone is coming from, as I am moving from Colorado in May.

Not sure if they do now.....they did, and I rode mine a few times every year, but remember a) there is a dress code and riding in slacks, shirt and tie, isnt all that fun, b) weather isnt very condusive for most of the school year (oct-apr, snow will be in the forecast....aug/sept high humidity and potential rain)
It can be done, just dont plan on doing it much.

That really sucks. My wife and I are bringing 2 road bikes, and 2 mountain bikes from Colorado. I was really looking forward to getting some "East Coast" riding done. I know that the campus has a dress code, but what if we show up and change before classes start. Isn't that acceptable?

It would be acceptable if you plan on changing in the bushes, but otherwise, they won't let you in the building between 8 and 4:30 out of dress code. ;)

You cant change in a locker roome before hand??

If not, thats crazy. Has anyone tried to appeal to the school about biking to school?

Just wait til Anatomy starts (along with embryology and histology), followed by Core sciences (Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Medical Genetics, Pathology, Immunology), followed by systems (Dermatology, Musculoskeletal/Rheumatology, and Neuro)... of course thrown into the mix along with all of that you'll experience what it's like to cram OMM into an already busy schedule, H&P/OPEP obligations, Spirituality & Medicine, Health Care management.... etc etc etc.

You won't have time to think about getting bike racks, muuahahahahhaa!!!!

Don't worry, don't stress out, you'll all survive... I have thus far and it's been an interesting, difficult, challenging, (at times quite frustrating) yet fun ride.

Actually I never found workout time a hard thing to come by. Ive been able to lift 6days/week (45-90min each session) cardio 2-5days/week (30-60min) in the early am. I wasnt able to do any bodybuilding shows....but that had more to do with the diet and carb depletion, et al. and brain function (or rather lack thereof). Aside from a couple of 2 week rotations without access to a gym, I never missed the gym, and NEVER missed a cardio workout. Now internship and residency....this may be a different story....Ill be happy with 3-4 workouts (either cardio or weights)/week.

Stomper, those statues always provide me with entertainment. The best is that they make Dr. Silvia look like an Audrey Hepburn type, when she really looks more like Harry Potter.

Unfortunately, the Ferrettis can't build the statues until they die, so they will never get to see big stone depictions of themselves.

Hi everyone -

I'll be joining the PBL Pathway - I'm so psyched, and I can't wait to meet everyone at orientation in late July.

Any advice on housing? I'm looking to find a nice condo/apt nearby with one or two bedrooms and preferably garage access...

mrm1682

jerseygirl...what you're looking for is Lakeview Apts. they're beautiful, spacious, and right next to LECOM. they have one bdrm apts or 2 bdrm townhouses both with garages. they are kind of pricey if you're alone but great with a roommate. but then again, housing in erie in general is pretty cheap so it depends what your budget is and your definition of pricey. by the way, i'm from jersey too ;)

Good lookin' out! Jersey in the hiz-ous! ;)

Lakeview sounds exactly like what I want... I've read really good things about the complex on other postings as well, so I will definitely be checking it out first when I go apartment hunting in a couple of weeks. If you don't mind me asking you a few more questions about lakeview apts, about how much is a one bedroom apt there, if you can recall? And just how close is it to LECOM?

Also, when is everyone gonna be making the move out to Erie? I'm shooting for early July so I can get acquainted with the area, and get settled with my furniture and whatnot. When I interviewed up there I didn't even get to see Lake Erie at all! Can you believe that? So lame.. so I'm excited about going back up there and really getting to check out the area.

The same company that owns Lakeview also owns Scenery Hills apts. They are the exact same as the townhomes at Lakeview in terms of floor plan and design, but I think a little older (built in '97). Don't know if they have one BR's up there, but they are right next to LECOM (I think less than a block away, walking distance). The two BR townhomes there are 695/month, they are 705/mo at Lakeview. The only disadvantage is that the laundry/and gym facilities are at Lakeview, so you gotta go there to use them.

Hi everyone-
I am fellow LECOMER class of '09 as well. I am moving to Erie the last weekend of May and will be dissecting in the anatomy lab this summer at LECOM. I got a really nice townhouse in Lakeview (I'm rooming with a MS II) because I'm moving in for June, but the lady at Lakeview said that there is already a waiting list for people that want to move in in July. She said that there will be alot of apartments and townhouses opening up, but if you think you want to live there I suggest you call asap just to get on the list. I hope this helps you out! Also, if anyone is coming up early this summer let me know, I'd love to meet you! :)

Along with lakeview and scenery hills (Maleno Dvlp), check with Pastore. The have Willowood and a new one (I think Laurel RIdge???) which just opened a year ago. Its even closer to school than scenery hills. I know pastore also owns a few more units closer to Millcreek Comm. Hospital, but Im not sure what the names are.
All, I believe are similar in prices....anyone coming from a big city willl be amazed at how cheap living in erie is.
Anyway, my place will be open in a week (were moving out on 5/9)...even though our lease is up may 31...
Its a nice 1 bdrm for 450/mo. Its perfect for a young couple.
I also have a Washer and Dryer for sale....almost brand new (weve only had them for 3 months)....we dont really want to take them with us as our apt has them and wed have to pay for storage...they are Admirals by maytag and were asking for 550 for both, but are willing to deal....

stomper, are scenery hills walking distance from LECOM, or do you have to drive? Also, is there a sidewalk so that it is easy to walk and you dont end up walking on the road?

It is walking distance....and there is a shoulder (no sidewalk). Unfortunately, W Grandview is pretty busy with the speed limit at 45 (but cars are usually over 50). Also note that you have to walk to the back of the school to get in, you cant enter along the W Grandview entrance.
It can be done, ive both walked and riden a mountain bike. However, in Erie, dont count on the weather being kind....rain, wind (whips pretty good down Grandview....) snow, sleet....
Better off driving.... :)

i'm in ISP currently, and i originally thought that i would only be in and around erie minimally after anatomy was over. buffalo is 'reasonably' close of course, but trust me, you'll wind up being there more than you think. for instance, i was in erie for the past 5 weeks because of OMM class, mandatory ISP meetings, exams, H&P/OPEP obligations, etc. isp is great though in that it affords you the opportunities to get out of town for a long 'working' weekend a lot more often than those in ldp. i love it.

Thanks for the heads-up regarding housing waitlists and other apartment complexes... I'm gettin right on it.

I'd love to meet up with people before classes start--I'll know a lot more about when I'm actually moving up to Erie in a couple of weeks...

And, interesting info about the ISP schedule...

I'm looking for some similar inside info on the PBL track.. To all my PBL people, what's your typical weekly schedule like? I know we're going to take anatomy, histo, OMM, and a few other classes along with the LDP people... but aside from that, are there particular/assigned days of the week that you come into school to meet with your group and work on cases, or is it more flexible (dependent on the group's preferences)?

any more advice would be appreciated.

it is usually only once or twice a week... typically wednesdays same as OMM. however this is an example of a weekly cycle i fell into last month... Test on monday.... OMM/ISP meeting Wednesday.... OPEP preceptor meeting thursday.... Monday Neuro lab.

see my point, it was just a hassle to drive home and come back a day later. its not like that all the time, but occasionally you'll have a string of days where you have to be there.

by the way, ISP Rulz!

Willow Wood Village on West 38th Street (owned by Pastore Realty) has nice 2 bedroom/1.5 bath townhouses. Also it has a pool/basketball courts/is family oriented/ affordable....although a bit older than Lakeview Apts., these in my opinion are better simply b/c the complex is not filled with Lecomers. I'm telling you, after 3months with all of the same people, you will welcome the privacy. Most apts have decks/patios. I lived there for about 3 years and loved it. Good luck!!!

PNC Bank is a popular one. In fact, there is a PNC ATM in the cafe at the school. I'm pretty sure they offer free student checking as well.

I'll be using USAA! I can withdrawal from any ATM and will be refunded the fee. By the way, it is a military-related insurance/banking association. If you are in the military, military dependent, or HPSP awarded (not for sure, but I think), you can join. If you separate from the military, you can't join after that...stupid.

It appears my wife might, MIGHT be called to duty before we get moved into the house. IF that is the case I might need some help from a few class mates If possible to help move my three children and myself into our new house. Only really need help with the heavy lifting, I can handle all the boxes and such. We will be moving up there Saturday May 28th if any one can possiblly help. My wife and I just got a townhouse with Joe Palermo Rentals at (814) 833 9565. They were awesome with helping us get a great townhouse that we will be moving into on May 28th. The owner met with us personally with only about 2 hours notice and had us all signed up with a deposit within an hour. The complex is called Brookwood Village on Bear Creek Road. I timed my commute at about 15 minutes to the school, but then again most everything there is just about the same. They have a website at www.joepalermo.com, and have all kinds of different options for students no matter what the price range. The good news is that these guys know, and favor LECOM students.

I have been using Adelphia for my cable/internet for almost a year. Adelphia services the Erie suburbs (Millcreek Twp.) while Time Warner is the primary servicer for residents within the city limits.

hey future Erie LECOMers. if you are going to be around about a week before school starts, the class of 2008 will be having a number of "get togethers" before we venture into whatever it is we are doing.......( at 3 a.m., coming back from tim horton's for a test at 8 a.m. and you can't sleep, and it has been like this for the last week +, i am not sure many of us know what we are doing any more, thats neuro!)
anyways, let me know and i can add you to a list and email you, letting you know where things will be going on besides LECOM sanctioned events.

This year PBL started meeting a few weeks after school started, only about once a week whenever we could fit in a 2 hour meeting. After the first 12 weeks of anatomy, histo, and embryo, PBL groups met 3 times a week for 2 hours each meeting. Meeting times are decided by the group members and facilitators, so it is pretty flexible most of the time. The PBL schedule is pretty open, with the exception of OMM on Wednesdays and a few other classes that only last a few weeks in the fall and spring. There may be a day or two during the week when you'll have nothing on your schedule, but it is expected that you're studying at that time and not taking a 3 day weekend...

...also be sure to email dylan about the non-LECOM sanctioned events.

Hope that helps,

Thanks for the inside word on the PBL track, Adam -- that was exactly the kind of info I was looking for...

I plan to make the move to Erie at some point in early July, so
I will definitely be getting myself on that social events email list --

"non-LECOM sanctioned events" sounds like a good time to me :)
hope my other fellow 2009-ers come out to play too before class starts!

Hey Future LECOM'ers---

I am a finishing 2nd year right now, and am offering you my apartment, as I am moving to Pittsburgh for third and fourth year rotations. To be honest with you, if I was staying in Erie there is NO WAY I would give this place up!

Here are the details...

For the past year I have lived in a duplex on Chestnut Street and 26th and love it, but I am leaving for rotations and my landlord would like to rent my place to another LECOM student.

It is a 2 bedroom place, w/ one full bath, living room w/a gas fireplace and a dining room, both of which are hardwood floors. There is a washer and dryer in the basement to do your laundry and a back porch for storage. You also have your own backyard and an off street parking spot. The areas is nice, quiet and safe and only about 5-10 min from school, 5 minutes from Erie, and 2 minutes from St. Vincent's Hospital. The best thing about it is the rent is only $475, which is cheaper than most 2 bedroom apartments. If interested please email me (futuresoxdoc@gmail.com) and I can then give you my landlords number so you can come check it out.

Also, no pets.

Good luck with your first two years...they fly by!

Does anyone (current student or incoming student) have thoughts about what type of laptop they are going to buy.

I was thinking about a mac due to the fact that I hear of less virus/spyware problems, however I remember reading some literature from LECOM stating that a program or two may not be able to be run by such a computer.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks

i never really liked macs mostly because i didn't want to spend the time learning how to use a "different" computer. probably laziness on my part but hey, i'm happy with my PC. i'm still debating whether or not to replace my 3 year old laptop now or sometime during the school year.

You can consolidate your undergraduate loans, as long as you are in grace, deferment, or repayment. The loans you will be receiving for medical school will not be considered, though, since they are not disbursed until august. Hope this helps.

I'm a current MS I and my suggestion is to avoid Toshiba. I had one in undergrad that was fantastic, but a lot of people in our class have been having major problems w/ toshiba. I have a dell inspiron myself and absolutely love it. Other popular machines around class are eMachine, Sony, and HP. Happy shopping!

I dont mean to change the subject but did everyone else get a letter about health insurance. It seemed kind of strange that we have to go with the schools recommended insurance plan unless we go under our parents or spouse.

I read somewhere that students were having a hard time with the schools insurance plan (no docs wanted to use it). Is this the same plan or is it a new and improved plan?

about the computers....i really don't like dells. my undergrad school had dells in all the computer labs and they never ran well at (froze, ran slow, etc). my sister got a dell laptop too (after i told her not to) and always has problems with it. on the other hand, i personally LOVE gateway. i have had 2 gateway desktops and a laptop (my current pc) and i have never had a problem with them.

Attention all LECOM students that will be in Erie for the coming year...
i have 2 bedrooms in my large house that i am renting out.
the bedrooms are small, but the house is large and you only have to share it with me and I am hardly ever there (and i do have one very annoying cat that i will be glad to kill if necessary) only 2 miles from school (takes less than 8 minutes in the AM), not far from downtown.
Pets welcome. washer and dryer in house
off-street parking
full access to all of my school books so you don't have to buy a lot of them
$450/mo for each room takes care of everything except cable/internet... if you want those you gotta pay for em yourself.
if anyone is interested or if two people wanted to live in the same house together or whatever, give me a call:
(814) 455-5272 -leave a message if i don't answer- sometimes i am like that. Nicole
ps-
[If two people want to get in on this together and take the two rooms right away, i might be able to work a better deal (like $400 ea./mo), so find a friend.

- don't message me about this, i posted for a friend - call the # above

I say the odds of your wife finding a "professional" job in Erie is slim to none and slim left town. I have been here 2 years and my wife who has her Master's in Public Health still hasn't found a job. She works at a tanning salon for work. Good luck and be prepared for your wife to lower her standards on the working in Erie. There isn't much in this town.

Just some thought to share.

Wife and I found a house on Stanton rd. Just being built, brand new, will be done in early July. 3 Bdrm, 1 bath, full basement. It about 15 minutes from LECOM straight out 38, which runs behind LECOM and parellel to W. Grandview.

I think if we had a roomate I would committ. It would come out to be 225 each plus utilities each.

We could even use the 3rd bedroom from anyone looking for temp houseing.

Hi - our family moved to the Erie area into a house that already has appliances, and also has a lot less room than our old house. Consequently, we have several appliances (2 fridges, 2 stove/ovens, over-the-stove microwave oven, washer and dryer) that were only used for about 6 months available for sale, as well as a few bits of furniture in fair condition. Please private message us if you'd like to hear more about them or arrange to see them.

I've lived in Erie for a year now (I was a post-bacc). I use Adelphia for my cable and cable internet. They have good promotional packages (maybe like $80-ish for both for a few months), but paying full price is tough (like $150-ish). YES!! I highly recommend you get a drivers license here in PA. The process may be a bit different than what you are accustomed to. Be sure to have your ORIGINAL birth certificate with noterization, social security card, and TWO bills with your new PA address. The plates may also be different.... If you own your own vehicle you shouldn't have a problem, but you must have the title with you in order to get the plates in addition to providing the proof of insurance.
Hope this helps and hope to see you soon.

I would actually buy an older edition of just about everything, except for pharm which is ever-changing. It's amazing how much $ you can save.

Checks for first months rent, computer, etc...things that are considered in the FAFSA application and the generation of the cost of education, but that cannot be paid for until we have our financial aid from the school, otherwise, i guess we just write checks that are out of our own savings/checking.

For example: I just spent 1600 on a laptop. in the packet it says they allocate 2000 for a computer in out financial aid. Because I have already bought the computer on my own, does this money now become available for the rest of my budget?

Sorry, the whole med school loans thing has given me the willies over the past couple of days.

you will get a check from the school, two weeks after the start of classes, that will be for 1/2 of your total loan award minus tuition and fees associated with the school (1/2 because you will get the second portion in jan.). this money is your responsibility to allocate as needed (utilities, rent, car, computer, etc.) so, for the first few weeks, you will have to pay out of pocket, but all that money is yours to spend however you like after you receive your check. hope this helps. see you in a couple weeks!

I've been told not to purchase any books til you need them. Since we have 12 weeks of anatomy/embryology, we can hold off on some of the other books til then.

As far as getting your driver license in PA LEGALLY ( I have a lawyer friend) you do not have to get it IF you are here purely for education as in not employed or in the military. The benefits of not registering is TONS OF money, at least from where I am registered in TN. In PA, if you are a licensed resident you must register your car there (unless its in your parents name), once you register then your car becomes liable for YEARLY INSPECTIONS. A neighbor of mine had to replace the shocks and tie rods on his 2002 ford because they claimed it was bad (cost $1300). From what several of my neighbors have told me expect substantial yearly cost to pass inspection. But by keeping your out of state licence AND residence (AKA parents, grandparents, siblings address) then you are liable for that state inspections, in my case NONE. You may get harrassed by an officer or two during your time there but as long as you tell them you are only a student if they ask, then they can not issue a ticket (as I was informed). So as far as I am concerned I will be a Tennessee resident until I graduate.

I haven't moved to Erie yet, but I signed up for internet service through Adelphia (w/o Cable service) for ~$26/mo. Not a bad deal.

I'm living in Mill Glen Apts., is anyone else going to be my neighbor there?

sounds like a good deal, also something else to consider. Vonage for our phone service, I've only done a little prelim research, but it looks like we can keep our hometown area code so family doesn't have to pay LD calling in, free LD out, and its only like 24.99 a month. You have to have broadband service already, but it looks good for a phone solution.

pm me if you want to know about voip @ 19.99 a month and you can have a second number of any area code (your hometown) for 5 dollars a month...its also unlimited europe as well as the us which NO other carrier offers.

I signed up for Adelphia's Cable Internet service for $27/mo. (~$15/mo for 1st 3 mo.) at Mill Glen Apts. It seems to be the best deal for any "high speed" service in Erie.

I have dsl from Verizon, and have been happy with the connection. I was very disappointed with their customer service. Our order was lost, delayed, then set up wrong. We were then charged for a whole week while we didn't have service. DSL is however just as good as a cable connection (plenty fast). Look for specials in the mail when you get here.

I did the math several times and I keep getting a different number than the answer. Here's my math: 13x12x2.54/1.36 and i get 291.35 then I add the 30 mmHg and I get 321.35. On the answer sheet they have 291, but then when the add the 30, they add it to 286. The pressure to 286 from 291? I was figuring it was a typo, but I'd like to know for sure.

Hey everyone!

Finally made it to Erie!

So two things:

1) does anyone know WHEN the exam is for the physio module? I'm trying to figure out if I need to start cramming now or if I can enjoy the summer a little while longer..

and

2) I am selling a dark black/brown colored TV stand that I just bought for $129 and assembled from IKEA last week. To get a better idea of it, this is a picture of it off the ikea website:

Two problems with it: 1) i accidentally got the wrong color (I really wanted white) and I thought I could deal with it, but I just can't; and 2) there is a small scuff/scrape on the wood in the front left bottom part-- email me at katmango@aol.com if you want to see any pictures.

I'm asking for $60 or best offer..

Is anyone else bothered by all these corrections? A typo or two is one thing, but this assignment is basically being completely re-written. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't really like to learn things twice...once the wrong way and then once correctly (or presumably correctly). I just hope this isn't foreshadowing for our next few years.

Ok, so I was picking a patient up from the CCU today and I came across a memo posted up at the nurse's station. The content of the memo is not important but this is how it was addressed:
"To MDs, PAs, DOs, RNs, and clerks"
Is anyone else bothered by the fact that PAs are placed before DOs?

no.

You could just not bother studying and go golfing instead.
I've got to go return some video tapes.

Rick(Cornell Medic), I crap bigger than you.

P.S. Patrick Bateman would be proud.

To get a better idea of it, this is a picture of it off the ikea website:

http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=12&productId=32210&langId=-1&parentCats=10104*10174

Thanks! Kat :D

The first phisio exam is in late Oct or early Nov. Physio is not hard except for few clinical applications of molarity, osmolarity and such. If you really want to study ahead spend some time with micro.

good luck

I am going to be attending LECOM this fall, class of 2010 and will be at Erie looking for apt sometime in April. Do you guys have any suggestions regarding apts that take pets? I have printed out some apt information already, but don't know too much about them.
my email is margaret@poznalski.com
Also, any other suggestions how to get ready for the first semester? Books, atlases, instruments, ...etc.?!

thank you

Margaret
