Anybody doing anything exciting before starting? mac11cron 04-25-2005, 08:57 AM Im another waitlister that would definitely be there if accepted. Was really thinking maybe UNC, being in state, but after having that blow up in my face last week I am full speed ahead for GW. Its not a tough place to get excited about in my opinion. I work with some people that went to Gtown and GW and all swear that there is no better place than DC to go to school. Now if these cream of the crop multi acceptance holders would only make up their minds after the months they've had to think it over, many of us could start making some real plans. I am sure others feel the same way. Mac gdubb 04-25-2005, 09:01 AM Im another waitlister that would definitely be there if accepted. GW2009 04-25-2005, 07:47 PM bump dpill 05-02-2005, 02:13 PM I will be there! ... either this year or next. I am waiting to see if I get picked up for an AF scholarship. If so, I will start this fall; if not, I will ask to defer a year- I will find out in two or three weeks (the scholarship board meets tomorrow). GW was definitely my first choice and I am very excited to know where I will be going to school (if not when). Good luck to everyone on the waitlists :luck: docdaname 05-02-2005, 03:45 PM I will be there in August. Where is everyone planning on living next year? dpill 05-07-2005, 09:11 AM I hate waiting! I should know in less than 2 weeks. My husband and I bought a 1 br condo between Dupont and GW... pricey, but we hope to get our money out of it in 4 years. Fortunately my husband is working while I am in school. I love the idea of walking to class!!! koalabear 05-07-2005, 11:29 AM GW is one of my top choices. I was wondering what you all liked about it and where else you applied if you don't mind sharing. Pura Vida 05-12-2005, 01:26 PM Well after lots of deliberation I finally withdrew my other acceptances, so it looks like you can add me to the list of people who will be going to GW next year. What do you guys think you'll do for housing, live with a roomate or live alone? I think living somewhere within DC proper would be ideal, but my budget may force me to live in Northern Virginia. Also, have any of you started to look for a place to live? If so, does anyone have any suggestions for buildings to look at. It could be really nice to live in a building where other GW med students live. chika_NYC 05-12-2005, 09:30 PM Hey you all, Just wanted to revive this post..good to see this going! Am confused by all the terminology, and going to the FinAid forum leads to more confusion? eralza 05-24-2005, 08:49 AM Hate to be such a pisser, but how are you all paying for the ginormous tuition? And which lenders did you guys file your MPN with? I'm trying to figure out which is the best, but so far, going nowhere. Am confused by all the terminology, and going to the FinAid forum leads to more confusion? Good question! I've been pondering it a bit as well. From what I can decipher from the FinAid maze, I'm going with the $38,500 in subsidized and unsubsidized gov loans. More options are T.H.E., the military HPSP scholarship, Public Health Service, and various other scholarships (that don't require a contract). I remember seeing that 37% of GW students received GW Aid last year, so that route has potential. Selling a kidney really doesn't bring in enough cash to justify the suffering, so I've ruled that out. Any other ideas? chika_NYC 05-24-2005, 11:43 AM I think if you don't have any other scholarships (which I don't), the T.H.E in private loans is the best option. The 2...% interest rate is one of the lower ones and it has this bonus program that i am unsure about. Just seems like the best option compared to all the others that GW fin aid office has posted (AAMC loan, studentloans). I also think fin aid is really backed up..it says on their website that people will not hear from our class at least until April 27th..(I guess they are at least a month behind). But it would be nice to know how much money we need to come up with b4 school starts. Also, have any of you been able to find affordable housing in the foggy bottom area? I have been trying to find some solution to this 13,500 per year living expenses budget when the average rents are around 1200 per month! chika freddydpt 05-24-2005, 11:49 AM Dude, I never thought about selling a kidney... they should add that to the financial aid site! :) In reality, if you're heart is set on primary care sorts of endeavors, then the NHSC is the way to go. It's super competitive so good luck to those who apply. I know a couple of HPSP people in my class. They seem to be pretty satisfied with the program so far but don't do it if you don't plan on being career military. It's not worth it unless your heart is in the right place. If you have high need, there is GW aid available. There are also a ton of scholarship opportunities that become available once you matriculate. You receive a bzillion emails from financial aid with applications to fill out... (and totally not to be sexest or racist), especially if you're a woman or a URM (under represented minority). With that said, many of us are on full loans, but my advice is don't be afraid. It's an investment just like buying a house would be. If you're gonna spend a bundle of money on something, it might as well be on fulfilling a dream, right? T.H.E. loans is the company that GW recommends. So far they've been good to me with awesome customer service and supposedly the best rates and bonsuses you can get. I'm sure most of you have seen this but, MD2 (monetary decisions for medical doctors is a great site). Also, www.northstar.org has an excel file that is a great budget organizer thinga-ma-bob. Good question! I've been pondering it a bit as well. From what I can decipher from the FinAid maze, I'm going with the $38,500 in subsidized and unsubsidized gov loans. I did the private loan through T.H.E. program and got some GW assistance too. I'm glad GW takes care of it. eralza 05-25-2005, 12:54 AM I tried to get all the financial aid stuff in early and I already got my award offer last week. I did the private loan through T.H.E. program and got some GW assistance too. I'm glad GW takes care of it. About how long did it take for them to process everything and get it back to you? bqj 05-25-2005, 09:09 AM About how long did it take for them to process everything and get it back to you? I filled out everything during the middle of April and heard back May 9th. chika_NYC 05-25-2005, 09:22 AM I filled out everything during the middle of April and heard back May 9th. Oh wow, so the same rule of applying early applies here too! Pura Vida 05-25-2005, 09:54 AM I submitted all my financial aid info around the end of April and haven't heard back from them yet. Hopefully it's coming soon. alrobmac 05-25-2005, 11:44 AM The financial aid office might kill me for saying this, but I suggest you call if you've filled out the online application and if you think they have had all of your documents for a week. I received my financial aid package today and I only sent in my documents about 2 wks ago. I called and spoke with someone yesterday to confirm that they had everything and they emailed me today saying that my package was ready to be reviewed. So, there might be nothing holding you up and a phone call will remind them that you're waiting. I think they're busy and handling a lot of people, but they were friendly and I felt like I was a priority. ChaiLatte 05-25-2005, 10:31 PM Hi everyone, I was accepted in the spring and it's nice to now have new classmates. Has anyone received any info on orientation? All I received was a save the date letter for orientation and the white coat ceremony. docdaname 05-25-2005, 11:30 PM Hey so I called today (after a few days of calling and no one answering the phone), and the result was they were missing a copy of my parents tax return. SO thats why i have heard nothing, even though i didnt even know i had to send that in (i thought putting that info on the FAFSA was enough). Anyways, those of you that have also not heard back may be missing something like that. On the subject of rent, finding a roomate may reduce your rent a little bit, also living in arlington will help (tho i hear it is slightly unadvisable), either way, I still dont see how you can meet that 13,500 a year living expense. those whores. bring on the loans (on a brighter note, when i was interviewing at miami the gguy said when he went to med school his loans had a 17% interest rate) eralza 05-26-2005, 12:55 AM I was looking at some of the areas outside of D.C. (Silver Spring, Falls Church, etc.). If there is a metro line nearby, the commute is still only about 30 minutes. Considering the hellish commutes that most make in the D.C. area, I figure that anything under 45 mins isn't too bad. Besides, if it is on the metro, it's a good time to read, listen to music, and just chill out. WaitCommiserate 05-27-2005, 08:38 AM Hi guys, Is anyone looking for a roomate? I am extremely clean, am obviously going to study the majority of my time, and am looking for a roomate who is also clean yet pretty chill? Somewhere near GW! gdubb 05-27-2005, 09:05 AM i can play now!!! i'll see ya'll in august! bjackrian 05-27-2005, 10:12 AM I was accepted off the waitlist yesterday, and GWU was my first choice, so I'll see all of you in August. Do people know when they're planning to move? I live in Nevada, and it's the first time I've moved cross-country, so my fiancee and I are wondering how early we should move and when we should look for apartments (i.e., separate trip, or drive out and stay with a friend and look once we're there). Any advice from people who've done this before would be much appreciated! skitlez 05-27-2005, 10:25 AM I will be coming to GW as well, I was just accepted this morning, I am really excited to meet everyone!!! :):) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DEFINITELY got to have that party! Pura Vida 05-31-2005, 07:51 AM Does anybody know if GW has any recommendations for buying a laptop. My computer just died after four years, so I guess I'm in the market for a new one. I would really like to get a Mac G4 powerbook. What do you guys think, good idea or bad idea? freddydpt 05-31-2005, 08:58 AM Does anybody know if GW has any recommendations for buying a laptop. My computer just died after four years, so I guess I'm in the market for a new one. I would really like to get a Mac G4 powerbook. What do you guys think, good idea or bad idea? There's no specific recommendation. Students have all kinds of computers and laptops. I'm actually in the market for one myself so if you see any good deals, feel free to post'em :) Make sure to get one that you can watch videos on (although I'm not talking high quality DVD here... just basic video), so nothing super duper slow. There is also wireless internet available on all floors of Himmelfarb and for you guys next year, rm 117 and rm 201... your main lecture halls. With that said, there's a bzillion computers in the library and hardly anyone types up their notes while in lecture (although a few tech saavy people do), and it is kind of annoying to hear click click click while in lecture anyways. Keep an eye out for the first orientation mailing. I know it went out last week. Also, your class web site should be up pretty soon with lots of information! I hope you're all excited. If you have any questions feel free to post questions here and I'll try to answer them (and the advantage is I don't BS... if I don't know the answer I'll ask). The reason I say this is because I've seen some fiction on this board already so just be VERY careful what you read from people who haven't been attending GWmed. Pura Vida 05-31-2005, 09:14 AM Thanks for all the advice Fred!!! IDPHARM 05-31-2005, 09:27 AM Thanks for all the advice Fred!!! Fred as always great advice. Pura Vida, I am now an MS-2 at GW and I have a PowerBook G4. I love my laptop, however, there are some programs that may not work on your laptop. Right now with the new Tiger OS, the VPN that is used by Himmelfarb library is not compatible. I was running the Jaguar OS so that wasn't a problem until I upgraded last month. In the first semester, there are some anatomy programs like Netters that did not work and I also bought a Mac version of HistoTime (very valuable for looking at histo slides) You can view the online anatomy websites that GW recommends no problem. I loved my laptop for viewing powerpoint slides for histo, physiology, immunology. But again you don't have to get a Mac to see powerpoint slides. But I love my Mac (and I have a PC at home) so I can live with some of the incompatibilities. I know that Apple gives educational discounts to students, so if you are still interested in buying a PowerBook, wait until you enroll and get the student discount. Adrian gdubb 05-31-2005, 10:52 AM thanks fred and idpharm  WaitCommiserate 06-01-2005, 08:47 AM Hi everyone, still looking for advice... what do ya'll think about cell phones? Should we get cell phones with DC area codes? my parents want to buy a condo or townhouse in foggy bottom, anyone know some good resources? mac11cron 06-01-2005, 08:53 AM I would get a DC area code phone if i get off the waitlist. I think 4 years is long enough to change it. And a condo or townhouse in Foggy Bottom would be awesome. A great place for you to live, and probably a good investment for your parents. gdubb 06-01-2005, 09:15 AM I was trying to figure out the whole cell phone thing. My parents don't want me to change it because I can call home for free and I'm still on their plan (why I don't want to change it because I don't pay for it..haha). I think I have to find a new bank. Lots to do..aaahhh.....and I just heard we had to get shots   oh and we have to plan our party... :D let's not forget the important things! :hardy: IDPHARM 06-01-2005, 11:06 AM Hi everyone, still looking for advice... what do ya'll think about cell phones? Should we get cell phones with DC area codes? my parents want to buy a condo or townhouse in foggy bottom, anyone know some good resources? If you have a national plan or roam free plan I wouldn't change your cell phone. The drawback is that DC people will have to call long distance. If you travel the Metro(subway) and want to talk while on the Metro, you need to get Verizon b/c they are the exclusive Metro carrier in the tunnels. Can't help you with condo in DC, I live in Alexandria, VA...sorry. docdaname 06-01-2005, 02:10 PM thats good news, because i have verizon. i had a state-wide plan, and i went to the store to ask them what i should do, and they informed me that now they only have national plans, so i upgraded (which actually now costs me less), and kept my same number. i figured this was easier, and most everyone uses a cell phone anyways these days, so most people wont even think twice about calling a diff. area code. gdubb 06-02-2005, 10:30 AM soooooooooo. when is everybody movin on up to dc? anybody already there? i was thinking first of august. we need to start plannin our foggy bottom party! computers, cell phones, apartments, oh my! :p freddydpt 06-02-2005, 02:10 PM http://www.gwu.edu/phonesurvey.html http://www.gwu.edu/~med09/ WaitCommiserate 06-02-2005, 02:35 PM hmm, looks like verizon isn't that good in the library...maybe that is a good thing.....so what is everyone getting? gdubb 06-02-2005, 02:41 PM hmm, looks like verizon isn't that good in the library...maybe that is a good thing.....so what is everyone getting? haha i'm too busy checking out houses to worry about cell phones just yet.. thanks fred!!! bcartin 06-02-2005, 07:12 PM The Class of 2009 Orientation Committee would like to congratulate you on your acceptance to the GWU School of Medicine and Health Sciences. I have spoken to a number of current med students at GW and they have all told me that the extra price you pay to live in that area is offset by the fact that you can walk to school. That's a huge consideration for me Also something to consider is that even if you save a $100 in rent by living further out, you will lose that money by paying to ride the metro everyday. This is just my opinion, but I for one will be living in Foggy Bottom. gdubb 06-08-2005, 12:05 PM I haven't found a place to live yet, but I'm sure that I will be living in Foggy Bottom next year once I can find a place. You can get it done at the MFA at GW for 20 bucks (if I remember correctly from last year). Here's a little inside tip: Make sure after you send in your immunizations, you check the GW banweb system to make sure that student health did not misfile your immunization card and put you on administrative hold. This happened to a few of us this year... just an FYI. Hope you're all enjoying your summers and looking forward to moving to DC!!! There is one, one page paper in Neurbio that counted toward 2% of our grade (if I remember correctly) and took all of half an hour to write. You will have weekly or biweekly presentations in POM, though, where you'll forced to look into the literature for your sources and present your findings the following week (PBL) With that said, no lab reports doesn't mean less work required for labs. For example, microanatomy, you'll spend a ton of time looking on the slides and using HistoTime (which your big sib will likely provide for you on CD). A few students even made a decision tree on how to diagnose each tissue during the second block of exams (I think that will be given to you guys, too). The more active the studying process, the better you'll learn. With Gross lab, it's almost all hands on learning and lab time. You'll all smell terrible. I promise ;) Hope that helps! msigman 06-27-2005, 07:28 PM Hey, I'm a linker from Goucher post-bac program and I'm joining you guys this Fall. I wish I found out about this site earlier. Wow..the days are creepin up kinda fast..I can just feel the thrill of sleepless nights and tiredness of long hard days... kate12345 07-04-2005, 12:41 PM Hi everyone--I'll be starting at GW in August as well! I'm from Northern Virginia and have been living in DC for the past year--if anyone has any questions about the area (neighborhoods, metro, etc), let me know, I might be able to help. I've just found this thread, so I'm going to weigh in on a few of the topics discussed over the past few months: Location: I moved here like a year ago and lived in Tenleytown, which is in the northern part of DC...I think the day I went for my interview at GW, it took me like 45 minutes to get there, including the walk from my apartment to the metro. Tenleytown was an OK place to live; there were several restaurants, it was a short metro ride away from Cleveland Park, Dupont, and Adams Morgan, which have more restaurants and bars and stuff, and it was cheap ($600/month). After I decided on GW, I moved to a studio in Dupont circle, which I love...Dupont's a really fun neighborhood with tons of stuff to do, a young and vibrant population, tons of beautiful old row houses and quiet streets, and it's about a 20 minute walk from my house to GW (I live a little northeast of the circle). I suppose the relative "fun-ness" of a neighborhood will matter less next year than it does this year, but I'm still looking forward to living here. I decided against living in NOVA just because I wanted to be able to walk back and forth to school at any hour to study or whatever...if I lived in NOVA, I'd have to rely on metro which stops running around 12 on weeknights. And you're right, metro will run you about $100/month depending on where in NOVA you live, so add that to the rent. And to answer someone's earlier question, metro unfortunately doesn't offer any sort of student rate or monthly pass or anything--everything is pay by the ride, unfortunately. You could definitely find a place in DC for as much as you'd pay in NOVA (plus the metro), but you most likely won't be able to find a place in Foggy Bottom for that price. I'm not sure about this, but I think that Foggy Bottom is probably the most expensive area in DC--at least Dupont and Georgetown have older apartment buildings that rent for less, and houses that can be shared, whereas much of Foggy Bottom doesn't. So I guess you just have to ask yourself whether the extra money you'd pay is worth it for the convenience or if you want to live further away. And if you live further away, do you want it to be a walkable further away or a further away that requires metro (ie it would take less time to ride the metro from Rosslyn to GW than it would to walk from my apartment, but I wanted to be able to walk)? Anyway, that was a lot of rambling--if you want to chat about this further, let me know, I'm better with directed questions :). Cell phones: Most people I know have either Verizon or sprint. Verizon offers the advantage of working on the metro, but I think sprint tends to work better inside buildings. Two of my friends have Verizon and their phones always have really bad service inside bars and restaurants and stuff, whereas my sprint phone almost always has a stronger signal. For me, having a phone that works inside buildings was more important than one that worked on the subway, but that's probably because I only ride the subway like 15 minutes a day. Plus, with sprint, my phone roams off the verizon network inside the metro and you can make/receive calls if there's some sort of emergency. Not sure how well sprint works inside GW (where did you find that information?), but that's been my experience. OK, I'm looking forward to meeting everyone at orientation--if anyone wants to chat about anything beforehand, my email address is katie.chiotos@gmail.com and my IM name is KtCht1! RachMD2B 07-05-2005, 05:35 AM Hi everyone! I just found this post and wanted to welcome you all to GW!! I am a 2nd year, so if you guys have any questions, please feel free to ask, I love talking about GW! I remember being really nervous last year, but it is such a wonderful school and orientation is great, most people in my class felt comfortable right away. In terms of living, my class is pretty much split 50-50 between DC and VA. The advantage of VA seems to be that you get more for your money (a really nice apt for the same price or less than a small one in DC). However, I personally live in Foggy bottoom and wouldnt want to live anywhere else! It is SO nice being able to go home during the day, even just for a quick break and the library is REALLY convenient. Another thing to consider is the social aspect, most of the school's events are in DC, which is another reason to live in the city. Even if you have a ton of work to do, you can stop by an event for a little while without sacraficing an entire night and dealing with the metro, etc. (Don't worry though, there will be plenty of times that you can take a night off!!!). A lot of people in my class live in apartments around school such as The Claridge House (where I live...about 10 other people from my class live here too), The President, The Jefferson House, etc. Anyway, if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask!! Good luck with the housing search! ~ Rachel jendc08 07-05-2005, 08:41 PM Must be nice to not have to study... :) :luck: Hi everyone! I just found this post and wanted to welcome you all to GW!! WaitCommiserate 07-08-2005, 11:33 AM i checked out the claridge house...its a dump...=(...what do you guys think of an efficiency for 1300 a month/util included? Is that too much? esp since our budget a little over 1500 a month..... that is the only decent place that i found a few blocks from campus..... RachMD2B 07-08-2005, 12:59 PM I live in the Claridge house and LOVE it, I don't think it is a dump at all...I guess it just depends on personal opinion though. After visiting a lot of different apts that my classmates live in around campus, Claridge House was one of the nicest. The people living in efficiencies here are paying around 900-1000, which seems to be pretty good. I am paying 1000 for one room in a 2 BR apt here (including utilities). We have laundry on every floor, a nice (heated) parking garage, pool on the roof and they are building a coffee shop inside too. The other thing I love about it is that so many classmates live here too, there is always someone around to hang out/get dinner/study with. I guess it depends on exactly what you are looking for though. laya533 07-11-2005, 08:45 PM Hey guys, I am trying to convince myself why should I leave tx to come to washington for my medical school. D.C. is totally diverse, so you'll meet a ton of interesting people. Almost every med school is going to give you a good academic background, but GW will especially give you an understanding of how to work with a diversity of people. It's always uncomfortable taking such a big step, but, as you probably already know, the benefits of seizing this opportunity far outweigh the drawbacks. p.s.-If your hesitation to move has anything to do with a boy, then you probably shouldn't even be asking this. hehehh Best of luck! bcartin 07-13-2005, 08:47 AM Greetings Class of 2009! It is great being here, and I'm getting excited about orientation/class in a few weeks. My fiance and I were able to find a place in Clarendon. Is anyone else in this area? Be sure to send out any messages of upcoming parties. See you soon, Eric supersnuffles 07-25-2005, 08:04 PM Ditto on the Clarendon area. Have a question about computers... notebooks...yay or nay? I don't really think I'm a classroom computer note-taker, the temptation of playing on the internet is too great. I would like to invest in an awesome desktop, but wondering if the convenience of laptop outweighs having a super computer. Any suggestions? Thanks. ;) Hey all, Just got relocated form Germany to D.C. It is great being here, and I'm getting excited about orientation/class in a few weeks. I'm currently applying and was wondering if anyone is an international student and applied to the IMprogram. If so, can you please let me know how the interviews, application etc went, and how well you did on the mcat. GWU is one of my top choices and I would really appreciate your help! thanks jannahz@gmail.com Spider-Man 04-05-2006, 02:39 PM OK, sorry in advance for being spacey (you guys will get used to it if/when we hang out next year :)), but I was talking to someone else who was starting at GW on IM the other day, and I closed the window before I buddy listed you. I know you had an 88 in your screen name and we talked a lot about where to get cheap beer in DC--IM me again? And speaking of cheap beer, I'm in for a party. :) Ahh, good old beer. It was always great b/c I would always get it for free at Lulus, too bad they're closed now :( |
