RaaMD 05-07-2005, 11:37 PM Who's going to NYMC this Fall? bbtbay 05-08-2005, 10:08 AM I just made my decision to go to NYMC over a few other schools. For me it was a matter of being comfortable with my surroundings, strong clinical rotations, and good residency match. I'm looking forward to meeting and talking to my future classmates!! boyz of 4d 05-08-2005, 10:11 AM I'll most likely be there pending not getting into Rochester or Stonybrook off waitlist. I made a thread about this eariler, probably got lost. I just made my decision to go to NYMC over a few other schools. RaaMD 05-08-2005, 07:30 PM bump ruwan 05-08-2005, 07:34 PM I was waiting for this thread. I'm almost certain that I'm going to me going to NYMC next year, and glad to see that someone else is starting there. Has anyone got there financial/housing packages yet? Also, I know some med school classes have their own forums, anyone know if NYMC '09 has a forum, or place to discuss stuff? Cheers to you all. Crasavitsa 05-08-2005, 07:36 PM Yeah I am most likely going there also, I love everything about the school except the tuition so I'm going unless Stony Brook takes me off the waitlist. Cant wait! spongebob_sq 05-08-2005, 09:47 PM I heard that we will get our housing packages in June sometime. I am still waiting on a response from FA too... RaaMD 05-08-2005, 09:54 PM Deciding between this school and Drexel. What do you guys think? ruwan 05-08-2005, 11:04 PM Deciding between this school and Drexel. What do you guys think? I think I might find myself in that position. I should be hearing from Drexel soon, but I had a good feeling. Right now, I'm leaning towards NYMC. Here's why: - They teach to the USMLEs (and *I* need that b/c I'm bad at standarized tests.) - They have clinical starting from the first week. - Better matches. (This probably means nothing for me individually, but goes to show that it can be done.) - NYC is better than Phili. (imho) - More research, more facilities. Drexel campus is very small (one building!?), and I didn't hear about any research on my interview day. - Drexel has PBL/Trad cirriculums, but according to the Drexel students I met, they never meet. So there's a 1/3 of your class you might not know. - I kind of like the dorms idea b/c i'm only 21 (22 when I start), I don't know anyone in either area, and don't want to worry about housing my first time there. - 3/4th years in NYC is more desirable than in Phili. (At least in my opinion right now, having visited each city once.) - NYMC has a Trauma 1 hospital, right there. - Easier to fly b/w NYC and Sac (home) than Phili and Sac (not a real factor at all, but whatever) Things I like about Drexel more: - The people seemed nicer. - 3/4th years in Atlantic city (woah!) - Nice new building. - Not next to a prison. (but kinda in a crappy area.) That's what I'm thinking. I'd love to hear from the rest of you about your opinions. RaaMD 05-08-2005, 11:15 PM I think I might find myself in that position. I'd like to see anyone talk about Drexel's good points (other than the Eagles and 76ers), because you could use that info for your decision (and that might be something I have to consider later too.) Freakingzooming 05-09-2005, 09:03 AM hey guys: I think there is a lotta overlap between people deciding between Drexel and NYMC. I'm one of them too: Here's my takes- Drexel Positives- Obviously they try to make it their technology. The fact that everything, lectures, class notes, and slides, are all online. The whole campus is wireless and the path/histology lab is nice. I agree the technology is pretty nice but I don't think it makes the school that much better than NYMC. I personally think the real strength in Drexel lies in their teaching style. The IFM curriculum is what I chose and although it's not like PIL, what with it's completely different small group teaching style. I think it's pretty integrative. The students at Drexel seem to feel the teaching is overall excellent at Drexel, while at NYMC it's a hit or miss. The testing schedule isn't taxing either. The administration seems to be much much more receptive to the needs of students than NYMC. I like the fact that they have an undergrad campus that I can study at. Maybe use their gym... etc. I like that the class is large, which means I'll be this less likely to hate everyone by the end of 4 years. Negatives- Campus size, lack of teaching hospital, name changing. Although both NYMC and Drexel seem to be fit into one building, Drexel's library is tiny and their gym is inadequate. I didn't get to see the Hanenham hospital but the fact that it is almost across town. You can take the shuttle there but it's still really far away. I know the name changing was due to the hospital's financial problems but Philly is already loaded with med schools (Temple, Penn, Jefferson) and the fact that Drexel is having trouble finding a more secure affliate troubles me. You might have to do a rotation at Pittsburgh. Anatomy lab was crowded. It was sorta ridiculous, they somehow fit 250 people down there in a tiny room. NYMC: Positives- Tests are all multiple choice. End of classes have mini-boards, hence the high pass rate and how well students do on the boards. Anatomy lab is excellent. You cant smell the chloroform. It might seem minor but if you spend half a day for three months in a stuffy anatomy lab, you'll notice the importance. Being in the outskirts of NYC is the selling point for this school. if you had a car, you could get to downtown in less than 30 minutes. Thru taxi and then train, maybe 45 minutes. The clinical rotations are diverse and you'll have the opp to do them in NYC. The school has two main hospitals they rotate thru in NYC- St. Vinny's Manhattan and Metropolitan. I've heard Metropolitian is not a good teaching hospital but it's on the Upper East side and the patient pop is diverse. Negatives- Testing schedule is rough. I think students are overworked and stressed out all the time. I had a 1st year show me the campus on a 2nd look and she was telling me that she had a midterm on Friday and then a neuro midterm on Monday. So she went from finishing her midterm to a review session for a neuro midterm on Monday. The testing schedule seems to be like midterms once every two weeks. Miniboards at the end. A lot of testing. Overall, I've heard clinical rotations are not great and it varies between hospital to hospital. Westchester is not doing so well financially. The new Children's Hospital is great but NYC rotations are okay at best. Housing is a question for NYC cuz they sold their 95th street housing. bbtbay 05-09-2005, 10:48 AM It took me a while to decide to attend NYMC. I also got into Drexel and Penn St. I chose NYMC for these reasons... 1. Very good residency match (competetive specialties and excellent hospitals in CA --- I'm from CA) 2. Westchester Hospital located on-campus 3. Patient contact during first year 4. I enjoy the dormitory feel -- I got a good "gut" feeling about the school when I visited. 5. Opportunity to do rotations in Manhattan during third year (I am a city guy) 6. Sure the atmosphere is competetive, but I talked to a lot of people, and they said medical school in general is tough and stressful. For me, I feed off of that and it helps me. 7. Good scribe service for lectures. 8. Very nice facilities --- the anatomy lab 9. I want to come back to CA for residency, however if I end up matching in a "local" hospital, I'd rather live in NY than PA 10. I know a lot of people who have gone to NYMC from my undergrad (UC Berkeley) and they have been able to deal with the stress and testing schedule fine. They are having a great time --- they work hard during the week, and make time to relax during the weekend (go to Manhattan, spend time in Whiteplains). 11. I have relatives/family within 30 min of Valhalla. 12. Diverse patient demographic in Manhattan, and ability to do more hands-on work with residents during clerkships --- busy hospitals of St. Vincents and Metropolitan) rather than at Penn St (not as busy -- have been told you learn from doctors --- not working on patients, you are just taught what to do) I could go on, but for me it ended up being where I would be most comfortable and happy --- NYMC for me. Thanks for the reply bbtbay! nairay 05-09-2005, 12:59 PM Hi, I'm deciding between Stony Brook and NYMC. I've noticed that some people would rather go to SB if pulled off the waitlist. I'm from CA, and NYMC's matches in CA are enticing, but financially, I could get in-state tuition at SB after a year. I've been trying to organize pros and cons for each, but I would appreciate anyone else's input. Thanks! ruwan 05-09-2005, 03:11 PM Has anyone recieved any financial info or student housing from NYMC yet? I'd like to get mine done asap so I can travel this summer, but just want to check with everyone else. Who is planning to live in the dorms? Anyone living off campus? What about laptops/desktops/handheld computers and other equipment? Anyone planning to get any of those? bbtbay 05-09-2005, 03:39 PM I think we don't get housing info until the end of May. I am going to bring a laptop, but I had a similar question regarding which kind we should get??? spongebob_sq 05-09-2005, 08:46 PM I’m getting a new laptop to bring too. I think I am either going with a Dell or a powerbook. I'm not sure if the campus has wireless. I only know that the dorms have high speed internet of some sort. dukeduke 05-09-2005, 09:02 PM I’m getting a new laptop to bring too. I think I am either going with a Dell or a powerbook. I'm not sure if the campus has wireless. I only know that the dorms have high speed internet of some sort. at the interview they mentioned that the main medical ed building has wireless. hope that helps. ruwan 05-09-2005, 09:47 PM I'm almost certainly going to bring a laptop too. I'm thinking Dell, but maybe I'd like an IBM -- they seem "better" but more expensive. Or Toshiba. I'm sure there's wireless internet around, at least in the lecture hall/anatomy/library building (they've gotta be wireless now, don't they?). Do you guys know of any NYMC-specific message board? Should we make one or something like that? RaaMD 05-10-2005, 12:15 AM I made my decision to attend NYMC today over Drexel. Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll see you guys this summer and fall. Since most will be living on campus, I'm sure we all will have a chance to meet. sdnstud 05-10-2005, 12:31 AM i might join you guys/girls at nymc next year. i found out today that i got a $80K scholarship ($20K a year) from nymc. i had my heart set on rush, but now I am seriously considering accepting nymc's offer. what do you guys think? boyz of 4d 05-10-2005, 12:45 AM I got the dell 700m (when the 750 off 1500 laptop deal was available), altho I talked to my friend who is an MS1 there nad he siad there really is no use for it. Dude, that's awesome. I've seen your posts around and saw that you were really interested in Rush. I actually interviewed at Rush as my first interview and it went horrible, mainly because I didn't know what I needed to know for interviewing. If Rush had been a later interview, I might have been able to have gone there. Anywho, man that's awesome. Congrats. I'm from California too. ruwan 05-10-2005, 02:00 AM i might join you guys/girls at nymc next year. i found out today that i got a $80K scholarship ($20K a year) from nymc. i had my heart set on rush, but now I am seriously considering accepting nymc's offer. what do you guys think? hey man, congratulations! looking forward to seeing you there. btw, when did you fill out your financial aid stuff?, and when did you hear back from NYMC? I'm just wondering what the time-frame is on these sorts of things. bbtbay 05-10-2005, 09:06 AM Hey sdnstud- Congratulations on the scholarship offer! That is a really good amount also, since it cuts your tuition in half! I am biased because I already decided to go to NYMC, but I think you should go too! You are in the same boat as me (coming from CA, wanting to return to CA for residency, and from Berkeley). From everyone I talked to who goes there -- I know a lot of people from Cal who go there, went there -- it seems like a great place to attend. I don't know much about Rush, but I've posted why I chose NYMC. Congratulations again! And what type of scholarship was it (need based or did you apply for it (private)?? DonnyV17 05-10-2005, 09:32 AM wow, 80k from NYMC, not bad man congrats. As for laptops im prob gona get a 15" powerbook, ive had 2 dell laptops over the past few years and both of them blew. I know for a fact that the school has wireless within the main buildings, not sure about the dorms (but im sure you can hook your own router up). Im pissed about having to give my parents info for financial aid because i know im not going to get a dime from NYMC, eventhough im totally on my own throughout school. I would really love to get one of those unfurnished apts because i have a ton of stuff from my apt. Im not sure that i can get one of those though... any thoughts on the other dorm style apts? Anyway, see u guys in august ruwan 05-10-2005, 10:19 AM I was under the impression that all the student housing dorms were pretty much furnished (bed, desk, dresser, chair, a couch+coffee table in the common area). I'm not 100% sure though. has anyone gotten their student housing packet? superso 05-10-2005, 11:13 AM i might join you guys/girls at nymc next year. i found out today that i got a $80K scholarship ($20K a year) from nymc. i had my heart set on rush, but now I am seriously considering accepting nymc's offer. what do you guys think? hey man, i got that same thing yesterday. I wondered, what is the actual cost of nymc per year? that is, tuition + housing but excluding all the other stuff. I'm seriously considering nymc over downstate if i can figure out how much of an award this really is rummaMD 05-10-2005, 11:13 AM I too received an 80K scholarship. It's split 40K in grants, 40K in low interest loans. I just received the letter yesterday, and it is decided by the "scholarship committee". Not sure if it's need-based or merit-based. BTW, I will be attending NYMC, and doing a combined MD/MPH. Anyone else taking MPH classes this summer? Vitamin_Ng 05-10-2005, 02:28 PM hey everyone-- i'll be going to nymc this fall too. i actually applied during the previous app cycle, but took a year off to work and travel, so now i'm pumped about starting school. re: financial aid nymc asks that you fill out fafsa w/ the student's AND parents' tax info. i originally tried to file fafsa as an independent, but had to go back and include my parents' financial info also. the nymc portion of the FA app can be found on their website under "student financial planning", and requires your date of birth and SS# to log in. re: housing i received an email from candy hack (housing director) saying the best time to submit housing forms is may/june. these forms can also be found online. there are 2 types of housing, dorm-style suites which are furnished single bedrooms attached to a common room and the unfurnished garden apartments, which, from what i could tell, are better for families or students who prefer to live alone. o, and btw, i'll be a southern transplant (having only lived in atlanta and houston so far)...any tips for making the transition up north? ~marie Freakingzooming 05-10-2005, 03:31 PM When did you guys turn in the financial aid app to get the 80 k scholarship package letter? How can u call it a scholarship if 40K is loans??? rummaMD 05-11-2005, 10:57 AM How can u call it a scholarship if 40K is loans??? Well, technically it is all packaged together, i.e. you must take out the loans with the grants (this is how I interpret the letter). But yeah, 40K in "free" money. nairay 05-11-2005, 11:01 AM How can u call it a scholarship if 40K is loans??? Decisions, decisions... my parents just called me saying a FedEx package came saying I got a $20K scholarship (not as much as the others out here, probably because I wasn't on the ball with financial aid stuff). If i took it, it'd only cover probably the cost of living, seeing how tuition is so high and living in westchester is high. Stonybrook, unfortunately, doens't give out their packages until June!!! Oh how nerve-racking. ruwan 05-11-2005, 11:11 AM hearing all this talk of scholarships has made me pretty envious... but thankful to know i'll be going to school with some pretty bright folks. anyway, i'm planning to submit by finaid paperwork soon, and just want to make sure that i'm not forgetting anything: - 2 copies of MPN - NYMC finaid app - my + parents 2004 taxes - credit report for the credit report, did you guys get all three companies to give you one? i was able to get one from equifax for $5, but the other two companies were unable to get me one. my equifax is score is pretty good, so what do you think i should do? oh, and is all hope lost for people doing the finaid thing for scholarships at this late-ish date? nairay 05-11-2005, 12:36 PM I hadn't even turned everything in (just the fafsa) and i still got something. ruwan 05-11-2005, 02:03 PM I hadn't even turned everything in (just the fafsa) and i still got something. that's just downright impressive. spongebob_sq 05-11-2005, 04:06 PM a little offt topic.... but anyone plan on doing any research? synapse 05-11-2005, 07:33 PM anyone know if the class is full yet? i wonder if they're still giving out straight acceptances or if they're all just waitlist spots. i interviewed in march and haven't heard back yet :( ruwan 05-11-2005, 07:34 PM a little offt topic.... but anyone plan on doing any research? yeah i'll probably end up doing some. i didnt like research during my undergrad years because i felt it was useless and too difficult. after i stopped doing it, i began to appreciate it more, and i'd like to get involved with it at NYMC. i'm thinking maybe clinical research instead of scientific maybe, but i'm not 100% sure yet. Good luck, all you NYMCers and I hope one of you gets my scholarship. bbtbay 05-12-2005, 09:43 AM Hey sdnstud, where did you decide to go?? Does anyone know when the whitecoat ceremony is?? rummaMD 05-12-2005, 10:26 AM The White Coat Ceremony is October 7, during the Convocation. I'm trying to decide if it'd be worth it for me to bring my car to school. I'd have to bring it all the way from CA! rummaMD 05-12-2005, 10:47 AM Cars are not "essential". There is an intra-county bus system - BeeLine, which is pretty good (covers a lot of places). To get into NYC, there is Metro North (stops in Valhalla and White Plains). However, as you know, the campus is somewhat "isolated", and from talking to other students, it seems having a car on campus is a great idea. Quick and easy way to get around. (I'm bringing mine). Also, I believe parking for students is free. BTW - great resouces on the area: www.westchesterny.com http://www.westchestergov.com/planning/research/ DonnyV17 05-12-2005, 11:39 AM Bring a car if you can. We are by no means isolated however, life with a car is so much easier. Metro North is key for getting to and from the city (never drive into manhattan unless you are really familiar with the area), but to do every day things, you will probably need a car, or know someone who has one..... I for one am bringing mine. Anyone know the parking situation? Is it free, or do we need to pay monthly? dankev 05-12-2005, 12:48 PM i would say it is full.....waitlist is probably where all late interviewees are headed. I can't say for sure about this year, but last year I interviewed right at the end and was accepted without being waitlisted. It wasn't until June, but no waitlist. For anyone deciding on their car, bring it if you can. You can certainly get by without one, but it is really nice to have. jkamed 05-12-2005, 01:09 PM Bring a car if you can. My friend who goes there told me the parking situation, but I dont remember the details, I believe that the students who live on campus get free parking and the students who live off campus pay a small amount to park on campus, but it might be the other way around, and I'm not sure of the price. I do remember I thought it was not even slightly a big deal (but I pay $150/month to park my car outside my apartment now). ruwan 05-12-2005, 03:03 PM Thanks rummaMd! Does anyone know what the public transportation system is like in the area? I'm trying to decide if it'd be worth it for me to bring my car to school. I'd have to bring it all the way from CA! I'm in the same boat as you. I'm debating on bringing the car. On one hand, it seems super useful to have it there, but driving across the country isn't too appealing to me. Can you ship a car? How do these things even work? In other news, I submitted all the paperwork I need for the financial aid step 1 process today. It should get to NYMC early next week. I'll let you guys know what I hear. Btw, I've been reading the student handbook they gave us at the interview, it seems pretty helpful. bbtbay 05-12-2005, 03:16 PM You can ship a car, but I have to look into the rates for that (I heard it can be quite expensive). Also, I have a two-door car (Accord) and I don't know if it will be able to stand those icy highways in the winter -- something else you may want to consider. I also sent in my financial aid stuff yesterday. I'm not planning on getting any financial aid (my parents make too much) but what sucks is that I'm paying (like mostly everyone else) by myself. So it's going to be a lot of low-interest loans hopefully. --- That scholarship would be soo nice, but I didn't get it... jkamed 05-12-2005, 03:27 PM I'm in the same boat as you. I had some friends in the opposite situation as you about a year ago (they were moving (with some belongings) across the country, but didnt have a car, and they hooked up with someone like you (had a car but didn't want to drive it across country) and it worked out well for them. I'm not sure exactly how they found that person though, craigslist.com maybe. I think you can also ship it, but it might be expensive. naach83 05-12-2005, 03:57 PM anyone interview late march and hear back yet? i know it's only been about 6 weeks, but still wondering... i haven't gotten anything yet, but i heard from some first years that acceptances are still offered even if you interviewed late in the cycle. ruwan 05-12-2005, 04:59 PM You can ship a car, but I have to look into the rates for that (I heard it can be quite expensive). Is there no hope left for us? There were people who were getting scholarships solely on turning in a FAFSA. Others were getting scholarships prior to committing to NYMC (sending in a deposit). A part of me feels like they were sending out scholarships to people who hadn't decided on NYMC yet --- and needed a little enticing. If that's the case, then I don't think I'll be getting anything considering I already sent in my deposit (saying I'll see you in the fall) and turned in all my financial paperwork. Zweihander 05-12-2005, 10:45 PM I can't say much about the public transportation, but from the looks of the campus most people need a car. I wasn't planning on bringing my car to med school, but when I got to NYMC and talked to people there I decided I couldn't live without it! There's not much to do in the area of the school (not even a grocery store!). Just my opinion though. Maybe you should try to get in contact with a current student to see if living there without a car is that big of a deal. Living without a car here is definitely doable -- a lot of people do it and manage. But the upshot is that you have to rely on people who *do* have cars to get around. So make friends and don't be an a**hole. :meanie: Seriously though it is manageable if you don't mind the dependency and the inconvenience of not having one. ruwan 05-13-2005, 02:45 PM Hey guys, I got an email from NYMC today. Registration begins Aug 1, welcome week/orientation is Aug 2-5 and classes begin Aug 8. Wow, things are happening so quickly. Anyway, just wondering if anyone knows anything about signing up for housing? Anyone heard from student housing officially yet? Crasavitsa 05-14-2005, 09:36 AM Did NYMC ever offer a re-visit day? DoctorV09 05-17-2005, 04:40 PM don't worry guys, they aren't just waitlisting people now. I interviewed on March 9th and found out last Friday (May 13) that I was accepted (no waitlist, yay!). I'm sending in my deposit tomorrow and will be there in August unless one other school that I'm waitlisted at comes through for me. On another note, I haven't seen the acceptance packet yet--they emailed me saying I was accepted and that they were also sending out the package via snail mail and I had to accept within 7 days, except they said they were sending it to my permanent address (parent's house)--so my parent's have to fill it all out and send it in since I'm not living at home right now....anyways, my question is: what do i have to do for financial aid stuff? all I've done so far is submitted my FAFSA (i did that about a month ago)--now what do I have to do specifically for NYMC? Thanks! casanova70 05-18-2005, 02:27 AM Hi guys, My name is Peter, I've been posting in the UIC Class of 2009 thread, trying to decide whether to attend UIC or NYMC...Reading an earlier post in this thread, someone said they got a good "gut feeling" about the school, and that's the boat I'm in. For the past few days I've had a mental WrestleMania steelcage match in my head trying to decide where to go. Today, I decided on NYMC, one big reason being tuition ($46K/year vs $37K). Also, I love NYC, and I'd be bringing my car, so doing 3rd/4th years IN the city is ridiculously incredible. But every time I think I made a decision, I get doubts...do you guys think that choosing this school over UIC is a good decision? Regarding interviews/acceptances: I interviewed April 28th, was told I'd have to wait 8 weeks, but received my acceptance on May 13th, basically 2 weeks later. I was super surprised, I wasn't expecting it, but believe me I'm not complaining. So I guess spots are still being filled, so don't lose hope. Anyway, I guess I'm just looking for reinforcement in my choice. You guys are happy to be going to NYMC, right? And, if we have to move in August 1st, and classes don't start till Aug. 8th, that gives us 7 days to start all sorts of drama. Let's give "Melrose Place" a run for its money! ruwan 05-18-2005, 10:57 AM don't worry guys, they aren't just waitlisting people now. Thanks! if you go to the nymc website, theres a pretty detailed description of what you're supposed to do. get your 2004 and your parents 2004 taxes photocopied and ready to send out. also you'll have to do something with T.H.E. loan program (master promissory note or something like that), and one or two other documents depending on your status. it's not difficult, just a pain to put everything together. ruwan 05-18-2005, 11:03 AM Hi guys, My name is Peter, I've been posting in the UIC Class of 2009 thread, trying to decide whether to attend UIC or NYMC...Reading an earlier post in this thread, someone said they got a good "gut feeling" about the school, and that's the boat I'm in. Glad that you decided about NYMC.... but you know that the estimated cost of living at NYMC is 57k right? At least that's what it says on the financial aid website. I think like 10-12k of that is for housing+food, but just to let you know. I think "tuition" by itself is 37k though. I'm not sure about UIC, so just don't want you to make a bad decision. Anyway, if you're still coming to NYMC, it's good to meet you. Have you gotten your financial/student housing stuff taken care of yet? I'm still waiting for my fin.aid. package and any info from housing. Are you thinking about moving in Aug 1? I figured that since orientation starts Aug 1, we'd have to move in earlier....I don't know. What's everyone's thoughts on that? bbtbay 05-18-2005, 11:04 AM Peter- It sounds like you had a real hard time making your decision, but I'm glad that you chose NYMC! I was one of those people who went with their "gut" and chose NYMC over a couple other schools. For me, what it came down to was where I would feel the most comfortable. I'm a huge city guy (living in SF right now) and I enjoy working with a wide diverse range of patients --- which I will be able to do in Manhattan, 3rd and 4th years. As far as the competetive atmosphere that people talk about, I know people who are second years there, talked to people who are third years, and those that are residents right now who graduated from NYMC, and they said the competetiveness comes from a small group of students who are "hard core." In reality, there are always a few people who are like this --- gunners. But everyone said that an overwhelming majority are very friendly and they have formed quite a close-knit community --- I trust these opinions more than any other that I could have heard (specifically from this website). Its going to be hard for me leaving my family, friends, and nightlife of SF in July, but I'm looking forward to beginning fresh in NYC. I can't wait to meet you and the other NYMC students for orientation and have a great time... ruwan 05-18-2005, 11:10 AM bbybay, casanova70, and all the rest of the people on the thread who are NYMC '09, how about we be the overwhelmingly friendly group, and definitely not the gunners. I hated gunners in college, and I'm not looking forward to dealing with the best of the gunners in med school. DonnyV17 05-18-2005, 11:28 AM Yech, i totally agree. NYMC is great, cya in Aug. totally agree with Donny and ruwan - i honestly don't think i CAN be the gunner type if i tried... i'm just not like that. and donny, I feel your pain man cause a girl that works in our lab is totally a gunner and user/abuser - only friendly when she needs something. sooo... yea I still haven't received my formal acceptance packet yet (was told by email), or housing/fin aid info. i feel soooo rushed since classes start so early. i guess i should get on top of fin aid stuff but when are people moving in? i have to decide when i am ending work here at the NIH. see ya'll soon! casanova70 05-18-2005, 02:49 PM WORD! Yeah, I saw that the estimated budget @ NYMC is like 57K, but at UIC, for out-of-staters like me, is like 70K...that's a 26K difference the first 2 years, and, after interest, it'll balloon to like 35K or something, and that's money I can invest into putting a stripper pole in my Manhattan penthouse apartment. JK!!! THAT WAS A JOKE! I plan to live in Beverly Hills. I haven't gotten ANYTHING done yet, not even my FAFSA, cause there was some trouble with my parents' tax return, and they barely worked it out last week. Yeah I want to get up there as soon as possible, but I haven't received any financial aid/housing info, so I don't know when that will be. As far as being a gunner, I'm far from it. I think that it's gonna be vital for all of us to help each other out, we're going to need it. Let's keep our eyes on this thread, ok? I'd really like to be able to meet up with ya'll somewhere in the city a few days before school starts or something so we can get to knowe each other. spongebob_sq 05-18-2005, 03:52 PM I was in the same boat as you guys as far as deciding on NYMC goes, but I followed that gut feeling and now I'm really glad I did. I think most people move in the weekend before orientation (July 30th & 31st). I also heard orientation is a blast. Last year they went on a night cruise up the Hudson and went to a Yankees game. I thought August 1 was kind of early to start too, but I am really looking forward to getting started and to meeting you all! P.S. I’m definitely not a gunner! :) casanova70 05-18-2005, 03:59 PM TWAAAAAAAAT??? A cruise up the Hudson, and a Yankees game? Oh man that spells all sorts of trouble. I'm WIGGING out ppl, and would love any advice, words of wisdom you have to offer. When I visited NYMC I fell in love w/ NYC, but was ho-hum about Valhalla. Then again, how much free time will we have? : ) I guess I just wanted to ask everyone this for some perspective. I'm from Ohio and if you have ever lived in the mid-west people are usually very warm and friendly, say hi, etc. NYMC was my only non mid-west school, but it is also the only school where the current students didn't really say hi or chat to the kids who were interviewing. Is this more of a big city thing? An east coast thing? The current students were kinda hard to read. The first girl who talked to us came up from Manhattan, she was a 4th year and was super super nice. But the girl who gave us our tour was stand off-ish. She was a REAL gunner and pretty much stated that you could choose to be friends with your class mates or you could choose to beat them in test scores, I'm just trying to read the flavor/personality of the students there. What are your thoughts guys/gals? Also, if you were wrestling with this VERY hard decision, how did you make it. What were 2 or 3 of the things that SOLD you on NYMC? Well, I guess there's people like that in every group. I'm making a promise to you SDN people I'll meet at NYMC that I'll work hard, ask for help, and help as many people I can as possible. We're all going to be in this thing together... and fortunately, it seems like the fellow SDNers are with me on this one. I liked NYMC's scores and the fact that they do mini-boards. I also like that there are so many hospitals to choose from. And that we can choose if we want to go to the Manhattan life or not. So there's a lot of choice, and hopefully a lot of good friends. cassanova70, et al: I'm down for a meet-up in the city. Mine isn't that reliable, so I think I may not....I certainly don't want to be spending money on a car I would have for 2 years b/c I would do the manhattan roataions. DonnyV17 05-19-2005, 07:12 AM Hey guys, where is everyone from? undergrad etc? I went to BU, ive been in boston for like 5 years, originally from Long Island. BTW if you are within driving distance to NY, bring a car, its worth it for the first 2 years. As for living in manhattan, a car is the last thing you need. My jeep rocks in the snow but any 4wd car would be fine. Ive spent tons of time in the city, and only on a rare occasion would i ever drive in. Metro North and the LIRR could be the most efficient mass transet system in the USA. Dont let this thread die :) Biffer 05-19-2005, 10:24 AM received email acceptance offer~ 1 hr ago!! really pleased as i had a great interview day and also got great feeling about the campus/children's hospital/research potential/etc... I also received an acceptance to drexel on monday... so--tough decision here, any comparisons? NYMC: exceptional location, on campus hospitals/research pavilions, great rotations...didn;t see many current students...any comment on boards/match? Drexel: decent location (i've lived in philly for the past 6yrs), cozy-modern medical education bldg, very friendly and accomodating student body/staff... any comment on boards/match? I'm suddenly leaning towards NYMC as i am a huge fan of the metropolitan area that, in my humble opinion, has a singular monopoly on global culture and commerce... excited, biffer casanova70 05-19-2005, 10:30 AM That's what I'm talking about! I think we're about to enter into 4 of the hardest years of our lives man, and we need to be surrounded by people that are going to encourage each other and not try to back-stab to get ahead. Yeah we definitely should meet up a few days before move-in. I'll be in the same boat (i.e. parents in tow), but it's cool, it won't matter. Plus, I have friends in the city, so they can tell us what would be a good place to go for whatever type of scene we're looking for. I too am bringing my car, I don't think it's gonna be too good for snow-weather, it's definitely NOT a 4wd, but hell I'm not going to leave it here for my little brother to tear it to pieces. pumpkin628 05-19-2005, 11:11 AM Just got my email acceptance today and *think* I will be joining all of you at NYMC in August! Any other older and/or married students thinking of living in their family housing on campus? Has anyone seen it and care to share what it is like? Also, does financial aid/housing info come with the acceptance package they mail out or is it separate? Looking forward to meeting all of you in August! bbtbay 05-19-2005, 11:25 AM dobs737 - I also plan to do my part to contribute having NYMC being a friendly, cooperative environment for the next four years. Med school should be a time simply to learn as much as is possible in a supportive environment. I can't wait to start! DonnyV17 - I have lived in northern CA my whole life, and graduated last July from UC Berkeley with a Bioengineering/Business major. I am currently living in San Francisco and am working in an Americorps program called HealthCorps --- it has been the most amazing experience of my life. I finish on June 10, and leave for Eastarn Europe on June 12 (until June 30). Biffer - I also got into Drexel (and Penn St...yea I got a lot of love from the PA schools. For me NYC much better suits me than Philadelphia, but since you lived there for 6 years you may have a stronger affinity to it. I liked NYMC's match better than Drexel's and I liked the overall feel of the school more than Drexel. I have friends who currently go their and I stayed with them for a couple days. I went with my gut, and my friends even told me to go to NYMC over Drexel. (for the reasons I listed in this post before) pumpkin628 - Housing applications come out in the last week of May. Financial aid comes randomly, depending upon when you turned everything in (FAFSA, NYMC appliation, credit reports, tax returns). Hopefully you'll stick with NYMC!! casanova70 05-19-2005, 12:07 PM Yo Donny, I'm originally from El Salvador, was there for 4 years, and then moved to the states (Miami->NY->McAllen, TX)...Did my undergrad at UT Austin (best school ever), then moved to Dallas where I've been for the past 3 years. I moved back to McAllen upon getting accepted @ UIC (which I'm turning down to in order to go to NYMC) so I could spend some good quality time with my 4-year-old daughter, Londyn, who lives with her mom, before shipping out for school. BTW, along the lines of pumpkin's question, does anyone out there have kids/family/is married? Is anyone thinking of getting a single in the dorm instead of sharing a room? dobs737 05-19-2005, 12:58 PM Hey, I was thinking about getting a single room if I go just because I pull weird hours and study better at home vs. the library. Who knows. I am kinda hesitant on the apartments. Ever have the freshman roomate from hell? That is what I'm scared of reliving! So I have a question for all you folks out there, it has been nagging me in the back of my head. For all the other schools you had visited, how many students did they have per cadavar? For my schools it was 4-6. 6 max. And then NYMC said 8. I am really not liking that part. The best way to learn is to do the dissection yourself, not watch everyone else do it...I think we will be bumping elbows with all those people around the table! bbtbay 05-19-2005, 01:03 PM Hey, I was thinking about getting a single room if I go just because I pull weird hours and study better at home vs. the library. They said the professor did a great job of incorporating the systems and outlining each of their clinical siginificance. DonnyV17 05-19-2005, 01:11 PM I had the freshman roomate from hell, believe me it wasnt fun. I lived in an apt ever since. Im not to crazy about goin back into the "dorm" life and would love to get one of those 1br/2br apts... but whatever how bad can it be im sure we will all be buisy. I thought there were only 6/body, i always hated dissections, never really learned form them, i learned more from the atlas and books, i was never a lab person.... oh well i guess that has to change. alfie110 05-19-2005, 03:29 PM Hi Everyone, I received my e-mail acceptance today and am really excited! While still waiting on waitlists at other schools, the comments and questions are really helpful on this thread. I'm glad I can finally read it and actually know I could be a part of NYMC Class of 2009! Although I'm not sure if I'll be attending NYMC in the fall, you all seem like a great bunch :) I will continue to read this thread and keep you guys updated with what's going on with me. Congrats to all those already accepted and good luck to all of you who are still waiting..I sincerely hope you hear soon :) casanova70 05-19-2005, 04:35 PM Man this is getting out of control. Ok, so not only did I like NYMC better than UIC, but it was cheaper. UIC tuition is $46,000/year for out-of-staters, while NYMC tuition is $37,000. So I chose NYMC and withdrew from UIC. Well, the dean of admissions at UIC wrote me and said that they would waive out-of-state tuition for me, bringing it down from $46,000/year to under $19,000, which would make it $18,000 cheaper to go to UIC! But like I said, I had my heard set on NYMC, but can I ignore this opportunity? That means that, in total, I could go to med school for like $120,000...and that's crazy...now I don't know what to do! MD Rapper 05-19-2005, 04:47 PM x dobs737 05-19-2005, 05:31 PM Casanova70 - I got to go w/ MDRapper, UIC. Chicago is a GREAT GREAT place! And such a good bargain too. Just ask yourself this. If you go to UIC, do you think you will ever look back? If not, then take it! dobs737 05-19-2005, 05:33 PM casanova70, BTW, how did you pull the extra money from the dean? I mean, you already withdrew and everything! Did you have a 40 mcat or something? Tell me how you did it so I can get some extra money from schools! casanova70 05-19-2005, 05:59 PM Nah man, all I did was wrote them an email telling them I was withdrawing, and that financially it was better for me to go to NYMC, and they said that in that case waiving the out-of-state tuition wouldn't be a problem. I've written back asking him to clarify, so we'll see what he says. dobs737 05-19-2005, 06:16 PM Nah man, all I did was wrote them an email telling them I was withdrawing, and that financially it was better for me to go to NYMC, and they said that in that case waiving the out-of-state tuition wouldn't be a problem. I've written back asking him to clarify, so we'll see what he says. That is beyond SWEET! I'm still really struggling w/ the NYMC decision. At first I was going to reject, but now I see that these NYMC kids are really nice. Question: Why does NYMC attract so many California students? If I go I can almost gaurentee i will be the only ohio girl there! bbtbay 05-19-2005, 06:27 PM dobs - You should come! I doubt you'll be the only Ohio girl, but even if you are that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing! I'm from CA, and I don't really know why there are so many kids from CA there. I think it has to do partly with the match list (matched well to a lot of good CA schools/hospitals), NYMC having goodluck with "CA students" in the past, and NYC being similar to other big cities in CA like SF and LA. Regardless, I'm really looking forward to getting started and meeting everyone! dobs737 05-19-2005, 07:41 PM Hey does anyone know more about how you are introduced to working w/ patients initially? Our tour got cut short so I missed out on it : ( In most of the ohio schools I interviewed at the school has anywhere from 15-30 "exam rooms" with video. You swipe your ID, enter the room and the camera starts recording your exam w/ the standardized patient. This helps you fix your mistakes b/c you get to watch them later. The footage is usually put on a CD for you or on the web. It was hard for me to gague the technology of NYMC. You start patient care in the first semester like this, not shadowing/observing. Plus, are the exams @ NYMC on the computer or paper/pencil? Most places I know are at/going to the computer format which helps for the boards, and you only get the same time per question as the boards. At some of the schools I've interviewed at, especially U cincinnati, they have GREAT teaching labs like the SimMan, I don't know if you are familiar w/ that. You can practice starting lines, drawing blood, intubating, etc before you try it on a real patient. The robot can tell you what you are doing wrong, etc. All this is done in years 1 and 2. Any idea what NYMC does? idq1i 05-20-2005, 08:32 AM I thought it was 6 per cadaver. Anatomy was a good experience. However, you guys will really appreciate the pathology preparation in your second year. Also, don't listen to people who tell you to leave your car at home. Unless you enjoy waiting hours for the bus, or nagging other people for rides, you WILL miss having your car. Contrarary to popular belief, you can even bring your car to manhattan for your 3rd/4th years. idq1i 05-20-2005, 08:43 AM Hey does anyone know more about how you are introduced to working w/ patients initially? You may even get hands-on experience, depending on your M.D. 2nd year: You are also assigned to a preceptor (often at a hospital) where you get to practice taking histories and performing complete physicals. You also get to practice writing up your sessions, as well as presenting them orally. You will also learn how to perform GYN/GU exams. Start searching now, before everyone else starts the same search. Also, check to see if you already have access to your nymc email - many students send out a head-up to others when they move out of their apartments. ruwan 05-20-2005, 10:47 AM how do you get at your nymc email? I haven't received anything else from the admission dept regarding that. i just got an email today saying that they'd recieved my deposit, and more things are coming in the mail. idq1i -- any idea on when they let you move into the dorms? ruwan 05-20-2005, 10:48 AM from what student housing has told me, they wait to get a list of people who've made deposits from admissions, and then send housing info out to those people after they have the list. idq1i 05-20-2005, 11:46 AM how do you get at your nymc email? If so, you could contact them: !!! For problems with e-mail, remote access, LAN, or employee terminals, contact the Help Desk at 914-594-4582 or E-Mail them at helpdesk@nymc.edu. Move-in is generally on the weekend before orientation - most likely 6th/7th of august. I don't know all the details - I have lived in NYC all these years. Btw, the commute to school from the city is quite doable (by car, only) rudi 05-22-2005, 09:03 AM idq1i- you've lived in NYC since 1st year? How'd you manage parking down there? Also, how long was the commute? Would you do it again or choose to live in the dorms, they are after all, right there... Thanks! idq1i 05-22-2005, 10:08 AM idq1i- you've lived in NYC since 1st year? How'd you manage parking down there? Also, how long was the commute? Would you do it again or choose to live in the dorms, they are after all, right there... Thanks! I park in a garage (~250/month). Street parking is possible if you live in northtern manhattan (me) or the bronx (tons of street parking). However, I chose to pay the $ rather than having to spend time cruising the streets for parking. If I had to do it over again, I'd still live in NYC. There is nothing wrong with the dorms - it was simply a matter of personal preference. How comfortable are you living with 3 strangers for a whole year? Dorm pros: (relatively) cheap, can start strong friendships, class/library right across the street Dorm cons: 3 strangers (at least for a while), you are living in the middle of nowhere (Valhalla  ) NYC pros: You are in NYC, you get to laugh at your classmates as they scramble to rent apartments for their 3rd/4th years NYC cons: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$ Commute: Morning = 30 minutes if keeping up with traffic, 20 minutes if making the traffic keep up with you(it helps to have your military ID handy  ) afternoon: 30 minutes if I pay the toll (~$2), 50 min if I avoid the toll road bbtbay 05-23-2005, 10:02 AM Has anyone gotten housing information yet??? boyz of 4d 05-23-2005, 11:44 AM Anyone considering doing the Md/MPH that starts in the summer? Does anyone know the actual day its supposed to start, please let me know, thanks I was considering it boyz of 4d. It seems like we have until August 1st to apply. I was interested in doing a MPH in emergency medicine. Not sure what kind of classes I would take for it though. It seemed to be hot poshly put together. The classes for MPH are at night and I think it starts in September? Not too sure. I would look at the website and try calling. It seems really easy to get into the MPH program. Only a couple years old. I'm still on the fences to doing it though. The testing at NYMC is already hard as it is. Vitamin_Ng 05-23-2005, 02:22 PM I was considering it boyz of 4d. (fall, spring, and summer sessions) MPH degree: 45 credits, requires core curriculum of 6 courses plus a thesis (21 credits), $7500 optional concentration: for additional 24 credits in * behavioral sciences and health promotion * biostatistics * disability and human dvelopment * environmental health science * epidemiology * general public health * health informatics * health policy and management * international health * maternal and child health NOTE: there's also the option of obtaining a certificate (18 credits), rather than an mph. Vitamin_Ng 05-23-2005, 08:41 PM that sounds brutal. what's the benefit of getting an MPH? well, i'm guessing that the curriculum isn't designed so that you're booked solid four nights a week. perhaps the classes are just offered during the afternoon or evening sessions, and you can choose the ones that best fit your interests and schedule. nycmed8 05-23-2005, 09:32 PM Hi guys! Thanks I chose nymc over slu so i could say something about this. When i went to visit slu i felt sort of awkward because i am from california. i rode the metro a few times to check out the city and it seemed a bit scary. but other things: the rent is cheap. i think about$350. you do need a car. the hospital is right next door. nymc: a lot quieter but also close to nyc. uhh, i guess just go with your instinct and where you feel comfortable (the universal sdn answer) premed 05-29-2005, 02:43 PM I chose nymc over slu so i could say something about this. BenzBen 05-29-2005, 08:09 PM Congrats NYMC Class of 2009! See you at the end of July, I'll be helping you guys move in if you are in building 14 or 15. :) Anyone from UCSD? Prepare to have a blast orientation week. Then bust your butts 1st week. Tip: Get an air conditioner as soon as possible (it's gonna be hot and humid). Either buy a used one or a new one at Sam's. I recommend at least 6,000 BTU (8,000+ if you are on the 4th floor, gets hot in herre...so take off all your... ahem). If you are in Grassland 2, the way you figure out where you are is the first 2 numbers is the building number and the last two is your apt number. 01 - 04 is first floor, 05 - 08 is second floor, 09 - 12 is third and, 13 - 16 is fourth. (example: 1415 will be building 14, fourth floor). Ben bbtbay 05-30-2005, 06:06 PM Hey guys & gals- Has anyone gotten the official housing information packet sent to them yet? Wow, I was just going to make the exact same post. Yep got my good ol' 57k in loans for next year coming up. My question for current NYMC studnets is: it has living cost at 17300. Is that enough? Too much? What do you think? Also, if you don't use all 57k, what do you do with the extra? Do you have to give it back? Put it towards the already out loans? Anyone have any good loan re-paying strategies? Because, the reality of having nearly 240k in loans after 4 years is going to hit me very hard, very soon. Bigsheed - any housing/health stuff yet? Bigsheed920 06-03-2005, 06:19 AM It means your parents have money; time to go a-beggin'. Not the case Ifellinpothole, I worked all of 2004 so that is why I got no help. I wasn't really expecting much because my parents make too much money. I wish they wouldn't take this into consideration, especially since I vowed that I would pay for medical school by myself (receiving no help at all from them)...Oh well, debt for a long time... sparky5 06-04-2005, 06:51 AM Hey all welcome to NYMC, damm these pages grew fast! I wrote a long reply last night but SDN was down by the time I tried to submit it, so here we go again: Fin Aid- I feel the pain of those who got the big 0k in scholarships, I am in the same boat and it kind of sucks. I hate everytime people bring up that they are only getting Xk in loans or daddy is only paying the cc bill and the BMW lease. I have no savings, and am getting almost no help from my parents. So, I take all the 57k of loans each year. Occationally my parents help with my flights home but that is it. I think some may be need based but from who i talk to there also seems to be a competitiveness aspect, and those with more acceptances early in the cycle have more $. Car- If you can, bring it. I am a huge public transit/bike guy, but biking here is just dangerous on the side of the road, and the public transit aint great. Having a car keeps me saine esp since I took a year off and got used to being able to go shopping when I want where I want, something that is much much harder without a car. NYMC vs Drexel- I feel like a good chunk of the 2008 class was also torn in their choices. One thing drexel never told me was their lecture hall is too small to fit their entire class!!! That is why they have so much technology, so you can webstream it to your house and not take up a seat!!! I hear that if the whole class shows up the overflow goes to a separate room to watch the lecture on a screen. I haven't talked to people from drexel about this but you might want to. Also the NYC vs. Philly thing is huge!! NYC is an experience, so for 2 years i will try manhattan, something that supposedly we should all try at some point. If you have any questions let me know. Oooh new news, just announced yesterday, the entire campus is going wireless!!! The dorms will be wireless when you arrive! In terms of computers, I read my scribes on mine so I love having a nice laptop, but some people rarely use their computers (most people print out their scribes), so don't feel that you need to run out and buy a new one. ruwan 06-04-2005, 01:11 PM A few (more) questions: (thanks in advance). How does the scribe service work? Is it just for notes or does it include old exams and stuff? Oh and what do we have to do for the health insurance stuff? Thanks guys. Looking forward to seeing you in the fall. (Or rather, the late summer.) Oh by the way, anyone hear play football? Weekend football kept me sane in college, and I'm hoping that I can continue playing with the folks there. (very very non-competitive, just for fun, touch/tackle/flag?, just mainly for running around purposes). Is there a field we can use in the area? sparky5 06-04-2005, 02:10 PM The scribe service is like $400 a year which is word for word dictations of the lectures done in a coop sort of way where everyone takes a turn. Health insurance you automatically get enrolled in and can opt out with proof of health insurance. There is a little round robin the first week to take care of all these issues. there is a flag football league and softball league set up as well as an interclass powderpuff game. The games are usually fridays. There is a large oval in front of the ER for all the field sports you can use all the time. A few (more) questions: (thanks in advance). Vitamin_Ng 06-08-2005, 05:21 AM hey everyone-- got my financial aid package of pure loans yesterday via e-mail. like another all-loans kid who posted earlier, i spent the year working. perhaps nymc will be more generous w/ their scholarships after i've spent a year accumulating debt. :scared: on a positive note, the FA office was extremely fast w/ their response...took less than a week after i mailed in all my documents. also, i received my housing forms in the mail yesterday, and will be sending that in soon too. -m BenzBen 06-08-2005, 06:19 AM Just wanted to say that if you didn't get a scholarship this time around, don't expect one within the next 4 years. Most people get full loans here. That 18K in living expenses... that includes your rent. So really, you'll have about 700 - 800 per month as far as living goes (food, cell phone, gas, clothes, household items, entertainment, etc). For some it's more than enough... for me, it's tough because I had a well paying job before med school. ruwan 06-08-2005, 09:25 AM Guys, I just accepted my 57k in loans form today. Man that felt... interesting -- knowing I'm signing up for 240k of debt. Oh well. Still no housing info here, but VitaminNG gives me hope. Freakingzooming 06-08-2005, 03:38 PM hey guys: I just wanted to toss some info about the loans. I too got the 57 K in all loans deal. Not sure if I want to accept the T.H.E. loan though. The break down of each one: Stafford's interest rates are right now at 4.7% for next year's academic year. They went up by two percent from last year. The T.H.E. loans have an interest rate of 4.8% if you don't have a cosigner and 4.6% if you do. They are capped at 18%. I asked the financial aid lady if they have ever gotten that high and she told me she's worked there for 18+ years and they have gotten that high when she first started. Dont know what to make of that. Other than like 8,500 from the Stafford subsidized, the rest of the package (49K) is all unsubsidized... it's going to be painfully expensive for me to go to NYMC. Oh well. I already knew that. For the housing, does anyone know how hard it is to get a triple instead of a quadruplet apt.? Was anyone confused on the utilities? Thank you! renox9 06-09-2005, 05:17 AM Sparky5- Could you provide some insight into the schedule for an MS1? When I interviewed they essentially said 9-5 most days. Is this the case? How often are you finished with lectures/labs before 5? After 5? Thank you! I can help u with this one, as I'll soon be an MS2 after our last neuro test tomorrow (whooohoo!!) Sorry, I've gone a little crazy from all the studying these past two weeks. Anyways, you'll have those 9-5 days, but mostly in the first block of Anatomy/Histology. After that, the full on 9-5 days are few and far in between. Expect lecture every day, M-F, from 9-12. Some mornings in the first block are lighter, only 9-10 or 9-11, but once the 2nd and 3rd blocks start it is 9-12 every morning. Lots of people go to every lecture, and lots of people skip lectures and read the scribes. You end up doing what works for you, I personally like hearing it in lecture 1st, and so I go to them all. The afternoons are variable. Some Anatomy days you'll have lab from 1-5. Some days you'll have a class from 1-2 and that's it for the entire day. Some days you'll have nothing at all! I didnt feel like I spent too much time in classrooms. If you're in one till 5pm on tuesday, chances are wednesday will have 9-12, and then 1-2 and you're free. -Renox p.s. CONGRATS to all you incoming 2009'ers. I'll meet you all soon, as I'm helping to organize and volunteer at orientation. Feel free to ask me any questions here, I'm off campus and so can help other people who are thinking of going that route. p.p.s. to all those nerdy kids talking about friendster and myspace before...yeah, I'm a huge dork and have profiles on both of those. all I can say is that it's a great procrastination tool! u can look me up there, i have red hair. jmmmmm 06-09-2005, 08:39 AM I posted in the other thread first, but I'll be coming to NYMC in the fall, too - I'm really excited. The buildings seem 10-15 years old. There are furnished apartments which have lounges and smaller bedrooms and unfurnished apartments which have almost no common area and larger bedrooms. I think for the price you can't do anybetter. I am in a furnished 4 person room, and love it. I have a married friend in a unfurnished 2bdrm and he loves it. You really can't do much better for the price. If you have some extra $ or really want the independance you can live off campus, talk to renox9 about it. ruwan 06-09-2005, 02:03 PM For anyone else waiting for info and seeing who is getting what at this time, I would just like to let you fellow MSzeros know that I got my housing packet today. Not having family there was a little wierd with so many people having family there, but, as was said it was a short ceremony, so in the end it probably wasn't worth it for people to fly out for me since it is costly, and i wasn't totally alone, I got to hang out with another "no family" friend and we just drank beer and watched a movie. dankev 06-14-2005, 06:23 AM So apparently I am a "no family" friend. Yep, Sparky and I were about the only ones there without family. I don't feel like anyone missed anything, but there are some parents who are so proud, you just can't keep them away. If family is looking for an excuse to visit, it's as good a time as any, but I wouldn't make the trip just for the ceremony. premed 06-14-2005, 06:36 AM hey does anyone know when the white coat ceremony will be? If we wait and don't turn in the housing application now but later and it is received before June 30th, it won't affect our chance of getting a trio instead of a quad? Someone gives a speech about Medicine. Someone else reads the hippocratic oath to you. You don't even get to say it  Here are a few pics from my class: http://www.nymc.edu/convocation/2003/index.htm PS: but you do get free cake! aw man- I thought it was in Carnegie Hall. Why so late into first year? I thought most schools stick the white coat ceremony into orientation. I went to Rush's in August or early September. idq1i 06-14-2005, 08:25 PM aw man- I thought it was in Carnegie Hall. Why so late into first year? Got a problem? idq1i 06-14-2005, 08:35 PM I PMed this to someone in reply to a question. I figured I'd contribute my view on 1st block books to the rest of the incoming class. Main point: don't waste $$$. I'd like to think that my study methods work since I got H's in almost all 1st classes, and in all of 2nd year classes <<Warning: desire to use proper grammar and spelling atrophies in advanced stages of step 1 preparation>> I did not proofread this I was one of those people who never used review books. I will say that many of my classmates swore by the "small Moore" (abridged anatomy book). Many others get Netter's flashcards. There is also a Larsen review book (embyo) that people rave about. However, it is out of print - check your email when you get to campus - upperclassmen should be selling them. Speaking of upperclassmen... When first year starts, you will be barraged by multiple daily emails about books for sale by 2nd and 3rd years. You will be able to pick up all the review books (and regular books too!!!) you want for $2-10 a book. Hold off spending money now - you can always pay full price at the bookstore A couple of points about Histo: DO NOT waste $$$ on cell bio books. You don't need them for class. Plus, you can find alberts for FREE online (pubmed) Do get ross and Romwell. Most histo lecturers will refer to this particular book Wheater's histo helps in lab - buy it Anatomy: Moore Anatomy: Good book. Get it! Larsen embryo - get it only if you can't find the review book by same author Radiology book: Ehh... somewhat useful. You can find better pictures online, for FREE Netter: Hah! You do need it. If you didn't know, withdraw from med school now. Do not get the hardcover - no, it's not "cool" Rohen: Picture of cadavers. Don't need. You can get the same effect from spending an extra hour in the anatomy lab before the exam sparky5 06-14-2005, 08:51 PM I PMed this to someone in reply to a question. I figured I'd contribute my view on 1st block books to the rest of the incoming class looks like that pm hit me too... here was my response: For histology, use your undergrad cell/micro book ex. Alberts(The Cell) or Cooper or Lodish for the first part of the course. That all depends on how strong your bio background is. Most of the bio is simple cell bio so depending on your background you may not even need a reference. The rest of histo I would recommend Histology A Text and Atlas, Ross, M.H., Kaye, G.I. and Pawlina, W., 4th ed., 2003, Lippincott Williams and Wilkins. It is a pretty through book. Anatomy is mostly textbook/reference book based. The notes are slim at best. You need mandatory: *Grant's Dissector 12th Edition by E.K. Sunderland *Atlas of Human Anatomy by Netter and one of the Clinically Oriented Anatomy by Moore and Dalley books. Moore makes 3 different anatomy books nicknamed: big, little, tiny. Tiny is strongly advised aganist. I used little and big, and ended up liking big better. Everyone will tell you different things, the big is well bigger, thus more pictures and more text, the little moore is condensed with terse language which sometimes i found helpful. You also might find larsen's embryo book useful. If I was you I really would relax, not go out and buy books unless you really feel you need to. Unlike undergrad, since everyone takes the same classes there are TONS of used books for sale at the beginning of the term, and the bookstore stays well stocked. also, if you sign up for the AMA you get a free big moore (i think) soooo... you might want to wait. Afterall, the first week of school is orientation where you are relaxing and getting things like books. You don't really need all the books till second week. I don't think anyone showed up with textbooks in hand at orientation. at the beginnning of orientation i felt a little wierd that everyone had different choices of books, and there was no single source, but that is med school. There are 3-4 different review books: pretest, brs, highyield,.... for everyclass plus all the texts. I would strongly urge you to study from real books, and use a review book for just that, review. good nightall sparky5 06-14-2005, 08:56 PM Renox9 had answered some of my questions regarding schedules for an MS1, but I wanted to know approx how many days/week during the Anatomy/Histology cycle are 9-5 days. I'll be a first year in AUgust. I was supposed to be class of 2008, but then decided to defer. All in all, I will have been out 2 years which makes me 24. Does anyone know how many people are fresh out of college and how many have had a year or two off? Also, I've been spoiled here in NC by an apartment the size of a small house and my own bathroom. I'm thinking of living off campus. Has anybody heard anything about it (other than it's expensive). How many students live off campus? How horribly will it impact my (already nonexistent) social life? Also, how about those loan packages? Anyone else having to take out the entire amount in loans? I pray I'm not the only one!!! The lady from downstate called me this morning and offered me a position off the waitlist. Needless to say i am very happy about this, however, i really did not think i would have to make a decision on where i was going to go this late in the game. Did any of you have to choose between NYMC and downstate? I have read all of the forums but nothing sticks out besides cost. I know the upsides and the downsides to both, they seem very similar in all respects. Im really looking for some help here. I love NYMC, and from the minute i interviewed i knew that i would fit in. However, since i havent really thought about downstate much i really dont know what to do (im screwed in a good way). Can anyone who had to go through this give me some advice. I have 2 weeks to make my decision. Thanks tora 06-23-2005, 08:19 AM ascrimmins - thanks for your input! ive decided on NYMC! Yay class of 2009! :) abcabc 06-23-2005, 12:20 PM DonnyV17 If you are close enough, it might be a good idea to go and see the schools again and the areas around them. For months I was trying to decide which school would be my top-choice (though I was accepted at one, waitlisted at another, and waiting for initial decision on the third). Finally the week I got all 3 acceptances, something clicked in me and told me Stony Brook was the best for me (the others were Albany and NYMC, which is why I'm reading this thread). Try making a list of things that are important to you - cost, things to do around there, residency placements (like where you would want to be), school prestige (where you would be PROUD to be a med student). I really liked all the hospitals that Stony Brook matched into. Don't worry, you still have 2 weeks, try your best to evaluate in this time, and you'll definitely make a good decision. It's easy to get stressed about the decision, rather than focus on the lifestyle you want. If you have a pre-med office to discuss this with, that might help too. You can ask for advice on the pros and cons of both schools. Good Luck! You'll definitely make the right choice! fuzzyerin 06-27-2005, 06:34 PM Having worked out my whole entire life and having seen the NYMC "gym" I was just wondering if anybody had suggestions regarding gyms to join. I've got 28k of "Anticipated Aid" coming in and 20k of "Charges" on my account. So does this mean that the office of the Bursar is going to cut me a check for 8k when the aid comes in? How do I know when the aid has come in, or is there anything further that I need to do? Currently, the bill says "Balace Due: 20k", but they're not expecting me to pay that are they? I mean, the aid will come through by August 1... I hope. Anyway I can check on this/make sure? so I stop worrying about it. Hmmm...interesting that they don't seem to care about MY financial stability much! 1 - You can share the scope with someone else - just make sure that the second person is in the same room for histo lab 2 - look at the earlier posts - all the books that you need are listed/described. Also - the "required" book list is available on the NYMC bookstore webpage Dr Brentwood 07-18-2005, 04:26 PM i think i'm planning to buy most of my books from 2nd years who'll probabaly sell them for less than the bookstore/amazon. i'm sure there are some 2nd years who'll want to get rid of their stuff. (i think that's what one MS1 said earlier in this thread.) also, i'm in nor-cal and just received my housing info today. I'm in grasslands 1307. that's pretty close to a lot of you, and i think i'm your neighbor donnyv17, and right down the hall from boyzof4d. right on. as for sharing microscopes, count me in on that too. lets try to save money any way we can. um for you MS1s... how hot does it get up there? do we really need an a/c -- and can any of you tell us what books (if any) we should try to get before we get there? also, is anyone starting this after a very long break from school/work? i haven't taken notes really since march, and have been enjoying an extended vacation since then... hopefully i'll be able to jump right into the frenzy without too much difficulty. This is my yr off, so I haven't sat in a lecture room since June 2004. Don't worry about it and enjoy what's left of your break! I was reading old threads and I came across a MS2 saying that 4th floor suites can get extremely hot, so he needed the a/c. Yeah, for the tuition that we're paying, microscopes should be included in each lab. I went to a public high school and each lab class was equipped with microscopes for everyone in the class. DonnyV17 07-18-2005, 06:01 PM Buy an air conditioner. It will be the best investment you can make over the next 4 years. Welcome to NY everyone, where its hot and humid from may--> sept and starts to snow in late october. jmmmmm 07-18-2005, 07:17 PM Are there any banks on campus? What banks do most students use? I'd like to find a bank that is both at home and at school. bbtbay 07-18-2005, 08:01 PM i think i'm planning to buy most of my books from 2nd years who'll probabaly sell them for less than the bookstore/amazon. i'm sure there are some 2nd years who'll want to get rid of their stuff. Looks like KCAccidental and I are also neighbors...I'm in 1407. I also was wondering about sharing a microscope. But in the information that was sent, for the rental of the microscope (the cheaper one), it says $400 for 2 years, and it says "first come first serve" which leads me to believe we can't wait to find out what histo room we are in to find someone to share with. What do you all think? ruwan 07-18-2005, 09:32 PM Looks like KCAccidental and I are also neighbors...I'm in 1407. I also was wondering about sharing a microscope. What do you all think? bbtbay- yes, that's exactly what i am thinking. i want to share a microscope, but how do i find out who? or if i chose to share with my roommate(s?)/SDN folks is there anyway to switch people's histo labs around? idq1i -- how do you deal with this problem? (also, should i accept that microscopes are necessary unlike in undergrad when you can get by without one?) idq1i 07-19-2005, 03:04 AM idq1i -- how do you deal with this problem? (also, should i accept that microscopes are necessary unlike in undergrad when you can get by without one?) You should have access to a microscope during your 1st year. They will also tell you that you need it in your second year - however, you can get by without one. The administration makes it difficult (why = ?) to share scopes because you sign up for a rental during orientation, but you get assigned to a histo lab room on your first day of classes. Frankly, I don't know how you can make arrangements to share a scope. Try calling the department in early August to see if they already broke up the class into different modules oli84 07-19-2005, 02:01 PM Anyone have any recommendations for what kind of a/c to buy? I'm a little worried about the size of the things though, they might not fit in the sleeves the apartment provides.. I'm in Grasslands II I believe, one of the 4-person apartments.. KNightInBlue 07-19-2005, 07:05 PM YES!!! I finally found an apartment off campus! Its actually quite big for one person but at $900 (in westchester especially), it was a steal and I took it. Now if I can get past that 30 min commute everyday, I'd be golden. Do we have to wait till orientation to get stethoscopes, microscopes and other equipment? I ask because my aprents offered to buy me a stethoscope and I am thinking of going for a really top model and was wondering if it's really worth it. boyz of 4d 07-19-2005, 10:09 PM About the AC, I talked to my friend who is going to be an MS2 and he said go to a local shop and buy one, they are like 100 bux, but theres no exact fit, so he recommends you buy like 12 bux of insulation and make it fit. I guess it wont look as clean but it will be like 1/4th of the price (according to him). Biffer 07-20-2005, 07:19 AM I'll be in a double in grasslands I (unfurnished)--which is exactly what I requested. I am really excited to get things underway and look forward to meeting my future classmates... love, biffy KCAccidental 07-20-2005, 10:37 AM i have a question about our addresses- the housing booklet says to use this format - name, apt #, Old Farm Road, Valhalla, NY 10595 - when listing our apartment do we list is as: just 1408 or should we include our room number, 1408-4? thanks guys ascrimmins 07-20-2005, 02:04 PM Hey all. I know I mentioned a pre-orientation get-together so thought I'd follow up. I'm thinking the evening of the 31st would be a good time to do it. I will call my uncle who lives in the area to see any place he might suggest. If you are interested, PM me. Thanks! bbtbay 07-20-2005, 03:14 PM Hey everyone, Does anyone know if the suite Grassland apartments come with a television (probably just wishful thinking)? Also, still was wondering how we know if we have Grasslands I or II? Thanks. lhh147 07-20-2005, 03:17 PM hi future classmates :) this might be a silly question but...do we get a closet in our rooms? im going to be in a grasslands 3-person suite. also, i wasnt planning on getting an aircon since it was so expensive but then someone mentioned we could find one locally for maybe 100 dollars..? where locally? and what else is in the area in general? easy to get to grocery stores and stuff? i wont have a car so maybe there is a bus? pyra 07-20-2005, 03:34 PM Hey everyone, Does anyone know if the suite Grassland apartments come with a television (probably just wishful thinking)? Also, still was wondering how we know if we have Grasslands I or II? Thanks. Grasslands II is the suite style apartments and I is for the 1,2,or 3 bedroom apartments for married/ older single students. I think it said this on the housing application. Anyone familiar with the area know how to use the bus system (how far is the nearest bus stop from the school) to get to a grocery store or shopping area (I am not bringing a car) or do we have to bum rides from our suite mates? rummaMD 07-20-2005, 05:18 PM Do not list the room number, all suitemates share a mailbox. i have a question about our addresses- the housing booklet says to use this format - name, apt #, Old Farm Road, Valhalla, NY 10595 - when listing our apartment do we list is as: just 1408 or should we include our room number, 1408-4? thanks guys rummaMD 07-20-2005, 05:19 PM There are no TV's provided, but all rooms are cable-ready. Thanks. rummaMD 07-20-2005, 05:27 PM All rooms have fairly spacious closets, with 2-3 shelves above the rack. There is also a communal closet. As for the AC - Definetely worth it. It gets very hot and very very muggy in the Hudson Valley. Lastly, there are basicallt two shopping areas nearby; Elmsford - Sam's Club, Restaurants, Deli's etc. White Plains-ish - A&P, Kmart and other various stores There is also White Plains propper with 4 malls and many many smaller shops, restaurants, etc. Lastly, from what I can tell there are two main buses routes on campus, 14 and 11. Check the westchester.gov site for more info. A car would be best though. hi future classmates :) this might be a silly question but...do we get a closet in our rooms? im going to be in a grasslands 3-person suite. also, i wasnt planning on getting an aircon since it was so expensive but then someone mentioned we could find one locally for maybe 100 dollars..? where locally? and what else is in the area in general? easy to get to grocery stores and stuff? i wont have a car so maybe there is a bus? paradiselost 07-21-2005, 05:06 PM http://www.sovo.com/2005/6-24/view/actionalert/action.cfm "Officials at the New York Medical College in Westchester County, N.Y., continue to hold fast against allowing a gay student group to form, arguing that the group would “advocate and promote activities inconsistent with the values” of the Catholic school." This article surprised me a little bit; I was under the impression that NYMC isn't explicitly religious. Does anybody know exactly how big a role Catholicism plays in student life on campus, and also in what they teach their med students? DonnyV17 07-21-2005, 06:10 PM First off realize that I am not religious whatsoever. What you people need to realize is that although NYMC has a "catholic tradition" there is no catholic doctrine in their teaching. That aside, people have to realize that as a private institution, whose hierarchy is somewhat influenced by the church, there may be some issues that the school will favor the laws of the church, ie homosexuality and abortion. There arent priests running around teaching the M1 classes, there are no nuns. Relax. Just because a student group doesnt get the backing of the school, doesnt mean that they cannot meet and have activities. I was in an off campus frat and believe me we had a better time when we were off campus than on (i know its a horrible comparison but you get the picture). ascrimmins 07-21-2005, 06:19 PM Hey all, In case any of you are buying any books - Harry Potter, Netter's Anatomy (softcover, apparently ***Thanks idq1!***) there is a coupon from Border's - 30% off. Here's a link: http://f.chtah.com/i/9/276579820/071905_coupon.htm It's good through 7/24. Onto other topics - I've only heard one positive response re: a pre-orientation get-together (Yay Ruwan). Anyone else??? Freakingzooming 07-21-2005, 07:26 PM if you visited the campus, you'll see why we call it the "catholic tradition" but in essence, it's more of a convenience for the school to be Catholic so it can maintain their Catholic hospitals affliations. When I visited, I saw that there were no nativity scenes or crosses hanging around. I don't even think very many of the students there are even Catholic or Christian. Compared to SLU and Loyola, both Jesuits schools (SLU had a ministry office next to lecture rooms with crosses in each classroom), there wasn't much of a visible religious presence on the campus. You really have to visit the three schools to see the difference. pumpkin628 07-22-2005, 11:30 AM Could anyone tell me what info they have received in the mail from NYMC over recent weeks (since late June/early July)? I have been away from home for the past 3+ weeks and was having my mail forwarded, but there was a mix up and I have not gotten all of it. The last thing I received was a packet from Fin Aid with my first billing statement and info on health insurance. Have I missed anything??? bbtbay 07-22-2005, 12:07 PM I'm not sure if this applies to you, but we also received a packet from the housing office with our assignments. In that packet was also information regarding moving in, air conditioners to rent, and other relevant brochures. You may also have it already, but we also got something from health services regarding information for immunizations and a physical history form that needed to be filled out by a doctor (this may have been more than 3 weeks ago). ixisameerixi 07-22-2005, 01:08 PM Hey guys, I'll be joining you at NYMC. Im new to SDN but have been reading the posts and you all seem really cool, which is definitely comforting. Well i cant wait to meet everyone, and I'll see you in about a week. Vitamin_Ng 07-22-2005, 01:48 PM hey-- i just got back from a 2 1/2 week jaunt in japan...and wow, this thread has really exploded! anyway, i just found out i'm in 1413 grasslands. see you guys soon! and whoever is planning the pre-orientation get-together, please post the details once things are finalized. fuzzyerin 07-22-2005, 05:53 PM There arent priests running around teaching the M1 classes, there are no nuns. Relax. Um, actually there is a priest running around at NYMC teaching first year classes - Dr. Pravetz. He's a monk, actually, says mass fairly frequently on the chapel on campus, and is one of the most humble and excellent teachers I have ever met in my life. His religion doesn't affect his teaching, but he does offer a type of reverence in anatomy lab that students pick up on quickly and respect. He is often one of the favorite faculty members. And Dr. Sulmasy that does the ethics curriculum is also a monk. Just so you know. (That's what OFM after someone's name means - Order of Franscican Monks). But otherwise, as an alum, I loved every second of NYMC and am so glad of the clinical experience I got when I was there - it has paid off 10 fold in residency. Vitamin_Ng 07-25-2005, 06:43 AM hey, so i'm officially leaving atlanta this morning to make my way by car to new york for school-- it'll be a combined send-off/mini-family vacation/b-day celebration for brother type thing. see you kids at orientation! :D Freakingzooming 07-25-2005, 08:43 AM "The nightlife in Westchester is pretty bland. Although after reading it, I'm really thinking that a car would not just be useful but essential. KNightInBlue 07-25-2005, 10:50 AM I am living off campus in Yonkers, anyone else living off campus? (I know ascrimmins is :) ) ascrimmins 07-25-2005, 11:05 AM One more call for interest in a pre-orientation get-together. Who's up for it? Come on, you know you are. A few beers with classmates before class starts? I'll even DD :). Ok, well, let me know. I will post the location here. I'm thinking 7 pm on the 31st (for selfish reasons - have to drop someone at the airport at 6). Come on, you know you want to! bbtbay 07-25-2005, 11:13 AM Count me in for the get together. But where?? ascrimmins 07-25-2005, 11:19 AM Ok, executive decision. Let's meet at Grasslands. I will scout out a place earlier in the weekend. Who: ANYONE - I think we could use a few older and wiser students if they would care to "tag along" (ha, just kidding), but ESPECIALLY ANYONE who is NYMC Class of 2009. What: a few drinks, a few appetizers, some fun! When: 7:30 PM (I originally said 7 PM, but changed to reflect the barbeque that is on the orientation schedule) Where: Let's meet in front of the suite-style apartments and go from there. That way people won't get lost! Why: to kick off a very long four years the RIGHT WAY!!! How will you know? Well, I'm 5'0" (and therefore one could reasonably assume I'm a girl :))and have shoulder-length brownish-reddish hair. I will have my car - a white Volvo S40. Should you bring your car? Well, I will be DD, but I'm hoping we'll end up with 10 people or so. So, bring your keys and if we need another car someone can get theirs?? YAY! Can't wait!!! PM me for my cell # if you would like it!! |
