View Full Version : University of Oklahoma Class of 2009 Go Sooners! lfesiam 05-08-2005, 09:03 AM just want to say hi to all of my future classmates! eggdrpsoop 05-08-2005, 10:45 AM sup buddy. ill be joining you there next year. congrats on you acceptance. WhoisJohnGalt 06-10-2005, 08:19 PM Sup guys? Where's the rest of our class? I'm surprised we haven't gotten any info on our new classmates. DrMom 06-10-2005, 08:31 PM class of threads belong in the allo forum, since you guys are accepted. I'm moving this one there. :) putzeled 06-10-2005, 11:57 PM So has anyone found any student health insurance that is any better than what the school has with Macori? And for anyone getting alternative loans in addition the the staffords, what lender are you using? See you all in 2 months, lots of partying to do between now and then... WhoisJohnGalt 06-11-2005, 07:11 AM I'm using Bank One for my Alternative Loans, but not for any particular reason- it just seemed like the thing to do :) I'm (luckily) still covered under my mom's insurance for one more year. pbehzad 06-11-2005, 10:23 AM I dont have any alternative loans, but for the stafford loans i did the bank of america health maximizer loan. The one oudoc08 recommended. That may work for the alternative loans too. Is anyone planning on enrolling in that CPR class or whatever it is we have to take before school starts? the 3 days are all kinda bad for me, and then driving to OKC is another pain in the ass. I may take it at a hospital in tulsa, but does anyone know if we just need basic CPR or is there anything else about basic live saving skills. oudoc08 06-11-2005, 10:49 AM I dont have any alternative loans, but for the stafford loans i did the bank of america health maximizer loan. I'm fairly certain the only requirement is that the certification you must have is a CPR for Healthcare Providers class, not the basic Heartsaver course. Dr Turninkoff 06-12-2005, 08:50 PM With all the talk on the discussion board about this, I was wondering if OU has any AOA chapter? ad_sharp 06-13-2005, 10:33 AM With all the talk on the discussion board about this, I was wondering if OU has any AOA chapter? Alpha Omega Alpha.... We have a chapter. OUdoc, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that it's above a certain grade point (like 3.5 or something) or the top 1/6 of the class at graduation whichever is smaller. lfesiam 06-13-2005, 12:02 PM i signed on for the august 2nd CPR class at OUSHC anyone doing the geriatric pre-matric program from august 1-5? pbeh- what sup dude, have fun in chicago man. Amxcvbcv 06-13-2005, 12:37 PM Another thread to keep track of! It'll be tough not posting in the one from pre-allo, especially considering how many posts we have there. :p I went for the no-fees Medloan. OU does have an AOA chapter. I believe what you're thinking of is that exactly the top 1/6th of the class graduates with special honors. However, this is does not necessarily get you AOA. More than just grades are required to be AOA. You must be nominated or something like that, based upon your entire history including things such as community service, class service, recommendations, volunteer work, research, etc. etc. etc, in addition to stellar grades. In other words, one nice big package. Does any of this ring familiar from orientation, or am I just blowing this out my ass? Dr Turninkoff 06-13-2005, 10:51 PM Does OUHSC have a used book sale? They had one at the beginning of last year. Email May Nour (our class pres) to find out if one is planned for this year. I buy a lot of books at half.com or in the new and used sections at amazon.com. I bought a $25 dollar book brand new for $12 on there yesterday. Dr Turninkoff 06-14-2005, 09:04 AM Thanks for the book info, I've already started browsing. I know that some of you current students say that the syllabi are enough and that many of the required texts are not necessary. However, do you find the BRS books, other than Chung's, to be helpful for class? It seems like many schools test on minute details, and since the boards are more general, those books really aren't all that helpful outside of studying for boards. Do you think that OU's exams are more "board style", i.e. general, or more detailed and specific? speedo542 06-14-2005, 09:35 AM Another thread to keep track of! Do you think that OU's exams are more "board style", i.e. general, or more detailed and specific? This answer may or may not make any sense. The exams are both...... You will have to know broad concepts for the tests (of course). However, most instructors will expect you to know all of the little tiny details-some of which you'll have to infer from other little tiny details. For some classes like phys, I would read the syllabus once and go and read the BRS a couple of times to learn the broad ideas and go back to the syllabus to add the tiny details into the framework that the BRS provided. It's different for different people. You will probably find that something different works for you. I used BRS in anatomy (of course) and phys. I only used the lippencott book for biochem a little, but it was helpful. Don't even worry about the HB book. Many people (including myself) found the embryo book worthwhile. You don't have to buy the Mosby book for PCM right now either. You won't use it much until 2nd year. One more thing....the best investment that I made my first year......a 3'X5' dry-erase board. I used the crap out of that thing in anatomy, biochem, and hb. It makes learning pathways, the brachial plexus, charts, and a bunch of other stuff a lot easier (at least for me). I got the lender code from the mpn linked off this page: http://www.aamc.org/students/medloans/loanstates/loans/bothstaffordoptions_bankone.htm I can't open up the .pdf file from this crappy work computer, but the lender code is in the file linked under "Apply Now." I'm looking into the lap top vs. desk top issue and thought I'd ask around. Just wondering if anyone has heard anything or has advice on which one is the best. Amxcvbcv 06-14-2005, 11:10 AM Hey everybody, I'll be joining ya'all in less than 2 months (can you believe it???). I'm looking into the lap top vs. desk top issue and thought I'd ask around. Just wondering if anyone has heard anything or has advice on which one is the best. This is a very subjective choice with many factors to consider. Have you used a laptop before? Are you comfortable with using a laptop? Do you have a desktop? If not, do you have the space for one? Do you plan to do your studying at home? On campus? There are so many things to think about. For me, I wanted a laptop to use on campus, around the house, and when I am visiting relatives, so I bought one. However, I also have a desktop pc, which I am modestly upgrading (lcd monitor, more ram, etc.). I am also purchasing a wireless router, so I can use my laptop anywhere in the house to access the internet and my wife can still be on the desktop computer if she needs it. I love the versatility of a laptop and am willing to deal with their shortcomings (although, the one I did purchase isn't much of a sacrifice at all over my desktop pc). speedo542 06-14-2005, 11:54 AM I got the lender code from the mpn linked off this page: http://www.aamc.org/students/medloans/loanstates/loans/bothstaffordoptions_bankone.htm I can't open up the .pdf file from this crappy work computer, but the lender code is in the file linked under "Apply Now." Just wondering if anyone has heard anything or has advice on which one is the best. I used to have a desktop, but since I've had a laptop for the last 2 years (Well, I just got a new one thats a gateway and I love it), I'd never go back. It's just so easy to take your work wherever you need to go. And its a lot easier when you are moving or something and you don't have to lug a heavy monitor and tower around :) And like someone mentioned before, it's great having wireless internet, you can sit on the couch or on your bed and do all your internet shopping (ok mabye that's just me hehe) or whatever you need to do :) Just my opinion on the matter :D ad_sharp 06-14-2005, 01:37 PM I agree with the above. Wireless is awesome. I use my wife's laptop all over the house and back yard. I also use it to play with my psp online  oudoc08 06-14-2005, 04:09 PM Laptop w/ high-speed internet and a wireless router. A most excellent setup. Amxcvbcv 06-14-2005, 04:17 PM Laptop w/ high-speed internet and a wireless router. A most excellent setup. I used the crap out of that thing in anatomy, biochem, and hb. It makes learning pathways, the brachial plexus, charts, and a bunch of other stuff a lot easier (at least for me). Agree 100%. Another point, general Board review books such as 1st Aid are most definitely not enough detail for tests. As far as specific subjects go, Chungs (obviously) for anatomy and the BRS Physiology by Costanzo are great. Other than that, none of the BRS series are particularly helpful. I also didn't use Lippincott for Biochem much, though it is a very good book overall. The biochem class is much too piecemeal and doesn't folllow along with any one text. The syllabus will be your best friend there. Embryo is a tossup. The book is about 55.00 and may clarify a point or two if you are very anal about wanting to get that last point crystal clear, otherwise the syllabus and notegroups are enough to get you 98% of what you're wanting. Don't even think about buying the Psych book. An absoulte and complete waste of money. After hearing this piece of advice repeatedly, I caved and convinced myself that I needed it. $20.00 for a used book later, I never opened it and it sits collecting dust and wasting my bookshelf space. The only thing that I noticed that people had a various preference on was Anatomy atlases. I personally like Netters, but some others used Grants. My best advice is to visit the bookstore and find which works best for you. I also wouldn't recommend Moore's anatomy. It's the large anatomy textbook. While it is a great book, and I do have it, I never opened it for class. Basically, there are tons of great resources, but you only have a limited amount of time. I think you'll find that the syllabus, notegroups, Chungs, and Netters will more than give you the information. Moore's is nice to have if you want to give away 100.00, but not necessary for learning anatomy IMO. oudoc08 06-14-2005, 04:26 PM Where are all of you located? I haven't flown since the summer of 2000, and I'm really missing it. I'm flying at Oklahoma Aviation at Wiley Post. I just did my S-turns, turns around a point, forward slips, etc. today, and have a prof. check Fri. I don't think they would let me have anyone ride along during lessons, and you can't have anybody even after you solo until after certification, but if you have a private pilot cert. and did a proficiency checkride (or even if you didn't, since I would be cert'd), we could fly together after I get my cert (probably sometime later this fall), split rental costs and both log some time for half the cost. Aircraft rental is a little over a hundred bucks an hour, wet, and there is a minimum of 2hrs/day rental. So for a hundred bucks a piece, we could get 2 hrs log time and maybe go grab a cheeseburger in Ardmore or somewhere. Along the way, we could buzz those poor suckers at the HSC that are studying their butts off, while we're taking a much deserved study break. :) The aircraft are relatively new C-172's and lots of fun to fly. Here's a link to their site: www.oklahomaaviation.com Small company, great instructors/staff, and well-maintained aircraft. I did all my training in a 182 down at Southeastern in Durant, and the hand control I use only has a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for installation in a Cessna 182. Even though I only have 100ish hours, I do have both my complex and high-performance sign-offs. :) I think 60 or so of my hours are logged as pilot-in-command. ad_sharp 06-15-2005, 08:46 AM Where are all of you located? Your top priority is making it to December and passing all of your classes with flying colors. lfesiam 06-15-2005, 03:08 PM not sure about the flying colors though ;) i'm more of a slowly-walking colors type hahaha jk what's the least passing grade at OU? C or D? If you get below a C avg your first year do you have to repeat it again? I know some schools have that policy. oudoc08 06-15-2005, 04:13 PM not sure about the flying colors though ;) i'm more of a slowly-walking colors type hahaha jk what's the least passing grade at OU? C or D? If you get below a C avg your first year do you have to repeat it again? I know some schools have that policy. C is the lowest passing. The best way to avoid worrying about it, is to shoot for an A. Whether or not you get the A, if you put forth the effort and envision yourself going after that goal, there's no way you'll have any problem passing. If you made it into med school, it's not even an issue if you give it the effort. Yes we have people who didn't pass, but I guarantee it had much more to do with laziness, procrastination and lack of self-discipline, than in intelligence. My best advice: The best way in the world to start getting scared and flip out, is to do badly on the first exam. So, study as hard as you possibly can for the Anatomy mini-exam that comes about halfway through your first test block. I'm talking eat, drink and sleep it. That way, you'll do so well, you'll have alot less anxiety about the larger test block which comes a couple weeks later. Alot of people made 100's on that test, but while I believe everyone passed, there were a few that made low 70's. I would bet you a beer that they're the ones who didn't pass some classes this year. For me anyway, as the year progressed, I became much more efficient in my studying, and I found myself with more and more free time, and less and less stress. A large reason was I started homeschooling the second semester. But basically, you'll just figure out your groove, figure out what the tests are like, and figure out what effort you need to invest in order to get the return you want. Also, the details about repeating classes or remediating is not so clear. Maybe Adam can clear it up a bit. ??? lfesiam 06-15-2005, 05:09 PM C is the lowest passing. It seems like last year at this time when I was buying mine, I tried to get one, and they wouldn't sell me one because I wasn't a business, didn't have a tax ID, etc. They then steered me towards the pavilion which works fine, but I was wondering why the distinction. oudoc08 06-16-2005, 11:57 AM Ok, so everyone's heard the "4 foot of paper" horror stories about MS1, but nobody really knows what to believe. I was cleaning out from under my bed today, and my box that I had my MS1 stuff in was falling apart, and not big enough, so I put everything into a new box. I then had this bright idea to weigh and measure it. So how much does a year's worth of syllabus and notegroups weigh? A: 45 pounds, and measures 20" high. Dr Turninkoff 06-19-2005, 08:54 AM I also emailed for July 7 but have not heard back. The guy has been out of town, he emailed me back yesterday (Saturday). I asked him if I could do recertification since I'm current with basic heartsaver CPR from being in AED. He said that any roughly equivalent course is fine, but I'm going to recertify since mine expires at the end of the year. By the way, if you want a comprehensive history of OUHSC, check out the big special in Sunday's Daily Oklahoman. There really isn't much mention of OUCOM though, except that it and a few old hospitals comprised the rinky dink campus before the changes started in the 1960s. However, in typical Daily Oklahoman style, there are articles about how dental hygiensts and nurses are the way of the future. aj114 06-19-2005, 02:58 PM The guy has been out of town, he emailed me back yesterday (Saturday). Went to the doctor for the TB test, hep shots, etc. the nurse asked if these tests were for school, I said "Yes, medical school." She then says "Oh, you're going to be a medical assisstant, that's wonderful." So, I don't correct her and she keeps going. "How long is the program there at OU?" I say 4 years. "Oh, so you're going to be an RN, then?" Grrrrrrrrr. Anyways, this is a question for the guys that just finished their first year. What's the policy for missing exam blocks? Obviously, it'd be best not to miss, but, I'm feeling a lot of pressure from my undergrad university to attend a conference that falls on the dates of one of the exam blocks. I'm thinking it's going to be too much of a hassle, but I'd like to hear your thoughts. Thanks. I don't think that you can get excused for a conference (at least not by every instructor). It all depends on the individual instructor. I'm pretty sure that they will make you take a written version of the test if they let you out of taking it in the first place. I haven't done one of these, but I imagine that they suck. I would contact Drs Chung, Unger, Rada, and E. Micheal Smith to find out for sure. oudoc08 06-19-2005, 11:20 PM glad to be back on sdn after a long absence - hope all of you are having a good summer! just a few quick ?'s - what do we do if we're already certified? i'm assuming just take our certification card by the dean's office before classes start? also was just wondering if there are any other out-of-staters on here, and if any of you play golf? i'm back home in MI right now - but i'd definitely love to get a few rounds in when i get back at the end of july - looking forward to meeting all of you! You'll delay the posting of grades, exam keys, etc. There's nothing worse than a bunch of nerds who want to know how they did on the exam. Amen. Unlike most undergrad classes, where you might not find out your grades for awhile, many med school instructors will post the answer keys almost immediately after the exam, that is unless somebody doesn't show up to take the test. In addition, some of the professors will let the entire class know who didn't show, and essentially let the lions feed. I wasn't ever brave enough to miss even one test, and I wouldn't want to be the person who planned on missing an entire block (3-5 tests) for anything short of their own death. Bottom line, there is plenty of time in your medical career for other things. Test blocks are the time to take tests and nothing else except maybe a sandwich and a few hours of sleep now and then. oudoc08 06-20-2005, 09:44 PM By the way, it's nice to have all the school threads lumped together in a short forum, to avoid having to surf through multiple pages. You can check the homepage at hippocrates.ouhsc.edu to see when the new schedule is out (I don't think you'll be able to access it w/o a password). It still shows a spring 2005 MSI calendar as of now, but when it changes to Fall 2006, you'll know it's out, and on it's way snail mail to you. Each day's class hours are different. Some days you're there from 8:00 to 5:00, other days you might only have class for 2 hours. Occasionally, you have a day w/o any class. The only thing that's consistent in 1st semester is, you'll have anatomy lab on every other lab session (every fourth class day - ex. Mon. and Fri. one week, then Wed. the next, then Mon. and Fri. again, etc.) That only changes around test block time and the prep week before each block week. I liked the variablilty, as it prevented things from getting too monotonous, and all it required was a schedule check everyday to see what you were doing the next. As far as your other question about dress for the W/C ceremony, it's essentially nice clinical dress, for ex. suit or shirt/tie for the guys, nice dress or dress slacks/blouse for the girls. They did it last October when I signed up and again in the spring sometime. The discounts are minimal. Despite their location, they are still a private business with no university affiliation or subsidies (that I know of). As an employee of OUHSC I pay $66 for my wife and I because I have the amount direct debited from my paycheck each month. Without direct debit and employee discount is was around $78, so $12/month savings....not great, but better than nothin' It is a nice facility and generally not too crowded (there is a lap pool). Have a safe trip, and see you in a month! Can't agree more. If your relationship isn't rock solid on both ends, it will ineveitably dissolve during medical school. Better for it to happen before, than to try to deal with it during. Still sorry to hear about it though. Was engaged once, and she broke it off. Sucks I know. In hindsight, I'm now married with two kids and in a relationship that I have no doubts will survive med school, residency and whatever life throws at us. It is only now that I can look back and see how the first was much shakier than I could see at the time. My best advice, don't try to continue the relationship, or let her try to reestablish the relationship at a later date. By the simple action that she has taken, she has proven that she is not prepared to accompany you through what will be an arduous adventure, and you should take it as a blessing that you've been "cut free", rather than drug along. It probably doesn't mean much now but....When school gets here, you'll be surrounded by a whole new group of people that are understanding and supportive of your life circumstances. I can honestly say that I'm surrounded by some of the best individuals that I've ever met. Don't be discouraged. A whole new huge opportunity is right around the corner for you. As a married man, I can say that your significant other is by far the biggest "x factor" that will determine your success in med school-you don't want someone who isn't serious. You may have experienced a loss, but you'll make tons of new gains in the coming months-just be open to them. On a lighter note, the BLS class should be held in the BSEB. I didn't want to dive in just to have another line on my resume. There are tons of interest groups for each various specialty, and most people go to their lunch hour meetings for the free food (usually pizza) or do participate in the various things they offer. For example, last year the Fam. Med. interest group (FMIG) offered IV/phleb clinic, and the the surgery interest group (SIG) and the FMIG both offered suture clinics. My primary interest is emergency medicine, and last year I acted as the "unofficial" clinical coordinator, and set up a ride-along program with EMSA, the EMS service here in the OKC area. This year, I actually have an official position with the emergency medicine interest group (EMIG) as "activities coordinator", and plan on offering, in addition to the ambulance ride-along program, an advanced airway clinic, teaching oral and nasal ET intubation, as well as some other invasive techniques. In sum, you don't need to even have a slight interest in a particular specialty in order to take advantage of its skills clinics, programs, and most of all, free food. A bit of advice, don't eat any Papa Johns pizza until school starts. You'll eat it just about every day at one of the above mentioned interest group lunch hours. A few pitas, a few subways, but for the most part, pizza. There will probably be a get-together somewhere after the presentation (Tapwerks usually). I'll be there, I think. ad_sharp 07-11-2005, 08:14 AM Btw, you guys that are going to be driving the southern OKC portion of I-35 every morning are nuts-the traffic through there has been horrible for the last few weeks. speedo542 07-11-2005, 08:19 AM Btw, you guys that are going to be driving the southern OKC portion of I-35 every morning are nuts-the traffic through there has been horrible for the last few weeks. Yeah, they've had one lane closed in Moore while they work on the exit for NW 12th. It's not usually as bad as it looks. And yes, I live in Moore. I'm a mile west of the Wal-mart that's at 19th and I-35. putzeled 07-11-2005, 09:48 AM So has anyone found any better alternatives to the macori health insurance the school offers? Is this possible? - do you guys know any good dental plan? i signed up for macori but they don't have dental!!! sigh...(not that i have bad teeth haha, just like to get them clean twice a year without paying a fortune) speedo542 07-11-2005, 09:58 AM So has anyone found any better alternatives to the macori health insurance the school offers? I saw some plans on ehealthinsurance.com that seemed to compare favorably in terms of price and coverage. I get health insurance through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma. Try www.bcbsok.com to check rate quotes. I'm not sure they beat other carriers, but it was cheaper for me than through Macori, and has better coverage. From what i can tell, anyway. speedo542 07-11-2005, 10:01 AM just have a quick question: is it possible to change my NY residency to OK residency after one year and pay the in-state tuition? Is this possible? I have heard of some people doing this, but I don't know if they had other things too, like a spouse working full time in-state, etc. It is something worth looking into, though. I would like to say that, yes you can do that, but I don't really know for sure, or what hoops you have to jump through to qualify. lfesiam 07-11-2005, 10:06 AM wow so many of u guys are logged on right now, they should have a chat function hehe  putzeled 07-11-2005, 10:27 AM do you guys know any good dental plan? i signed up for macori but they don't have dental!!! sigh...(not that i have bad teeth haha, just like to get them clean twice a year without paying a fortune) You can always take advantage of the dental school. Getting dental work done their is pretty cheap. I don't know how much I would trust them doing root canals and such, but getting your teeth cleaned shouldn't be too dangerous. putzeled 07-11-2005, 10:31 AM For anyone that needs any vaccinations I found out today that the student health center gives them out pretty cheap. I need tetanus and the tuberculosis test and its only $10 for one and $12 for the other. (I already forgot which is which though.) You just walk-in, no appointment needed. I know I definitely want to hit the Smithsonian, Museum of Medicine, and a few of the major monuments (Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington, White House, Capitol Building). Have fun! I wouldn't mind doing my residency there in 4-5 years. :) WhoisJohnGalt 07-12-2005, 08:49 AM Does anyone know of a good bank that has ATMs/branches on or near campus? I'm doing research through the NACOE program right now at the Family Medicine Center (I work with ad_sharp). I applied to present my research poster at the conference, and was selected, so now I have to present at the poster competition going on that week. Should be cool, but now the trip isn't completely relaxing with no worries. I'm not too worried about it, though. The itenerary for the conference looks pretty full, so I hope we get time for sight seeing. It will be my first time in DC, and I want to experience it!!
