i'm all in for the 2006 match.

recently, a community pediatric ophthalmologist asked me if i could work part-time for him as an ophthalmology tech and he would "show me the ropes." what do you guys think? will it hurt or improve my chances in the match?

Work and gain experience.

I did exactly that, but it was after I had matched. I needed a job between med school and residency and I was hired by my department to work as a tech for a few months. I learned how to "work up" an ophth patient, how to correctly check vision, check IOP, refract, check glasses Rx, etc. It was a GREAT experience for me. I am about to start my PGY-2 year in ophth and I feel pretty comfortable with the equipment and much of the exam. I would strongly recommend doing this because you will learn ophthalmology from the ground up, and not take for granted what your techs do. Good luck!
