Hello Everyone,

This is my first post here and hopefully, it won't be the last! I have just ended my 3rd year and about to start my 4th year with a bang...Acting Internship in the ICU! (it should be a fun experience). I was wondering if you guys can help me out with coming up with a pertinent list of programs in the MidAtlantic region..I am interested in Cardiology (had done some basic science research and got a poster presentation; no publication unfortunately..and I intend to do some clinical research 4th year). I was wondering if someone can give me insight into where I would be competitive and have a solid shot. I have scored a 249 (99) on step1, is not AOA, I have High passed most of all of my classes/rotations with the exception of 2 rotations that I honored (surgery and psych!; I technically honored medicine as well (average at the end 91) but my school has this absurd rule that you have to score a 90 on the shelf and I ofcourse scored an 89!). I am interested in a good IM program that can get me a cards fellowship. I would appreciate your suggestions and guidance.

I'd say the Mid-Atlantic as a whole is a buyer's market in your case, but since you asked about the better programs:

Penn (everyone loves Penn, so might be a reach, but go for it!)
Hopkins (same as Penn, but tougher environment)
Jefferson
U of Maryland (take a lot of their own, great VA hospital)
U of Pittsburgh
UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson
George Washington U. (I'm told better for primary care, but has a solid reputation)
Georgetown (some accred. problems in the past? not sure of the story)
Temple
Penn State-not one of the more competitive or best known programs out there, but reportedly strong cards dept.

New York Programs (if you consider NYC to be Mid-Atlantic):
NYP-Columbia (possible reach)
NYP-Cornell (possible reach)
NYU (5 of my classmates matched there and seem happy to be going)
Einstein-Montefiore
Mt. Sinai

Thanks for the reply Irlandesa,

Honestly, my number 1 and 2 choices are Columbia and Mt. Sinai. Mt. Sinai actually is very attractive since they have a strong track record with our school (about 3-4 interns from our school go to Mt. Sinai every year!), but again, I would love to end up in Columbia. I am doing a cardio elective there probably in october/november and I will sort see how things are there. From what I heard, if you are at Columbia, you take crap and shut up because you are lucky enough to be there! (that's the attitude of some of the attendings there; I don't know about the whole program though). I think I will prosper and shine in a more resident-friendly program. Will see.
