don't know much about the programs that you are specifically asking about.
re: rankings:

Start by asking people in the field about good residency programs. There are two main ranking sources for residency programs and ophthalmology departments. One is offered by US News and the other from Ophthalmology Times. Click below for the rankings:

http://www.ophthalmologytimes.com/o...=76764&pageID=1

please search the FAQ index (sticky) for this and other really useful info.

Good luck!

I interviewed at Nassau University Medical Center and can confidently say that not too many programs could be worse. I actually did not even put it on my rank list. I believe that it was one of two programs in this past year's match with an unmatched position (MLK Drew was the other in LA) which was later filled through the scramble. Regarding LIJ, I've heard that its a pretty good program (although I cancelled my interview and didn't visit the program). It just merged with Northshore this year making it a larger program and even better from what I've heard.

hey eyedr. can you elaborate on what you liked or didnt like about the two "LINY" programs? I was thinking about crossing off Nassau from my list of programs to apply to- but NY is so tough... :luck:

Well I dont know much about LIJ other than its a pretty good program since I did not interview there.

Nassau on the other hand I do know a little about. First, their clinics practically operate out of a trailer and during our interview they had us sitting in the same small/congested trailer waiting room with all of their clinic patients while attendings would practically alternate between interviewing and seeing patients.

My interview day was totally messed up and prolonged. I arrived at my interview at about 7am at their Stonybrook VA facility which is nice and where the program director works out of. For some reason he states he has no idea of what goes on at the Nassau University Medical Center site and cannot offer any information regarding the experience at Nassau. Later that morning around 11am all the applicants were asked to drive to NUMC where we sat in the waiting room with clinic patients described above. I had 3 individual 15 minute interviews which lasted until 7pm that night!!!!! It was the most absurd interview I went to.

This is a program that seems to be lacking a lot of money. They were in the process of putting up a new hospital a few years ago, ran into a financial roadblock, and now that project seems to be on hold. Nassau's selling point to me was that they are looking forward to moving into their new facility when their financial struggles are resolved. The program doens't look to optimistic right now.

As an addendum:

That was a program that I personally did not like, and there is nothing to say that you will feel the same. If NY is the only place you want to be or you are an applicant who would be happy to simply just match, then I ask that you not listen to what I've said above and apply anyway. In my opinion it doesn't hurt to just apply now. If you do get the interivew, you can always cancel it at a later time if you wish. You dont want to end up with a small number of interview offers and say at a later time that you had wished you had applied to more programs. You're absolutely right in thinking that NY is a super competitive ophtho market!
