What is it about pediatric dentists that allows their earnings to be higher? Aren't they doing most of the same procedures as a GP? Do they just charge more?

All the pediatric dentists I know say their $$ comes from pure volume. Most pedo guys will see 40-60 kids a day. Mostly this is exam (that takes all of 5 min for most kids), prophy, btwx, maybe a pan, and fluoride. All very low overhead procedures, with decent reimbursement. Then operative is done at breakneck speed a quadrant at a time, so let's say they need occlusal alloy on 19, pulpotomy & SSC #K, DO on L (for example), this needs to be done quick due to kids lack of patients and cooperativeness.

In anycase, when they do operative it's done fast and a lot at a time.

honestly, I have seen such brutal and scornful remarks between specialties only in dentistry! I can't ever imagine medical specialties or even engineering specialties trying to claim superiority over each other!! in every other discipline, interspecialty respect and appreciation is so obvious! i can't ever imagine a cardiologist or a radiologist making fun of an orthopedic surgeon or a pediatrician!
so what is wrong with us dentists? are we all so insecure with our profession and specialty? or are all type A personalities??
i guess having thus said,lets start a thread where everyone will ONLY comment on the GOOD aspects of other specialties! please don't even start off the OMFS v/s PERIO even as a sign of displaying your boring sense of humor...i think for the next few days (atleast for a change..please!!) let's focus only on the good aspects of ALL specialties....!

All of them. And, believe it or not, I've heard a couple outrageous, positively unbelievable reports that it's actually possible to scrape out a living wage as a measly general dentist.

There is nothing wrong with us. Its the summer for some, I'm just bored sitting here in medical school, others just have no social life so we just poke fun at each other to get a razz out of them because we have nothing else to do.

I don't know about you, but I come to the dental residency forum to get away from all the predents on the dental forum. And the twixt shall never meet.

Location. You set up practice in high density areas loaded to the gills with middle to upper middle class families. The moms bring in the kids by the box cars because they want "the best" for their little angels. The real need for much of a pedo's special expertise that is learned during residency manifests in underserved areas where kids' oral health often takes a real beating before they finally get into a dental clinic. Pay is not bad for pedo's in the public health arena, but the big money is found as mentioned above.

Yeah I read that too.

I think anyone with successful practice management skills can make a lot of money irrespective of the speacialty.

Pedos have seen a rise in their income lately due to the demand of pedodontists in the country. Oral surgeons on the other hand have seen a fall in their incomes thanks to the managed care fiasco of the physicians.

Also, with the popularity of "cosmetic dentistry" in recent times, I expect prosthodontists to make a lot of money in the near future.

I think only public health dentists are at a disadvantage when it comes to demanding high salaries (unless they take up executive positions at dental/pharma companies).

in short, I dont see dentists really starving anywhere unless they are in the habbit of injecting their love juice in the patients mouth.

Easy: Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery esp. in CA, Cardiology, Anesthesiology, Radiology.

it doesnt matter in which faculty we make more money..........i think what matters is your interest in the subject
like i never liked prostho ...no matter how much money i make being prosthodontist.....i cannot do that!!!!
i always liked oral surgery ....n even if i dont make money ....i would prefer being that
but ....i still have long way to go for it!!!!
well my purpose of mentioning this was just to tell .....its the proffesion with which we have to live.....not just money .....n also u'll make bucks neways being a dentist :)
