I'm hoping to start an interesting discussion. For those of you with family in the profession, what kind of impression do they give about the outlook of the field? Where are they located?

I've shadowed with a couple of ODs in two different areas and have seen very different levels of career satisfaction. I've read some of the posts on the 'optometry sucks' yahoo site and would like to hear another side of the profession.
