I'm an MSIII with a hefty commitment to the Navy (academy+HPSP+grad school=10+ years), and I just recently discovered this board. I'm trying to find out how to make the best of my service, and was wondering if anybody has any experience in pediatric surgery. I know it's been said in past posts that peds is being downsized, but are there still spots for peds surgeons? What sort of lifestyle/cases are out there? Any info you might have would be appreciated, and thanks for the help.

General pediatrics is being downsized to some degree. Although Gen Peds and Peds Surg are completely different. There are very few Peds Surg Billets in the Navy(only at NMCP, NMCSD, and NMCB) and obviously no internal fellowships meaning you will have to get a civilian fellowship, which are extremely competitive. If you are able to get a fellowship I would highly doubt the Navy would say no. As there are very few Surgeons in the Navy to fill these billets.

Your best bet is to try for FTOS in General Surgery and match into a top program. That would be the start. I would doubt that You would be able to continue into fellowship without being a gen surg for the Navy for a few years. Hope you arent scared of making the Navy a career lol

The pediatric surgeon at NMCP got so fed up with the Navy that he left at the 18 or 19 year mark....What does that tell you?

He was an academy guy too.

at the walter reed/national naval consortium, we're currently down to one peds surgeon (he's navy). we had two, but one retired and has yet to be replaced. it's gotta be costing the military some $$$ because everytime our current guy goes on leave (the last two weeks) we have to refer *all* potential peds surg cases down the road to Children's National. luckily he's back now

as a sidenote, we're also currently wihthout peds radiology support. they knew the person we had was leaving but (shocker) they haven't been able to hire a replacement.

He was a great surgeon too. Just goes to reiterate what alot of us have been saying about the unfortunate problems with Military Medicine

Yes he was...If any of my children....hell, even if I needed surgery...I would have him do it.
