W: I don't like you man! You getting all these interviews already? What'sup wit that fool? Share the wealth man! All jokes aside, strong work, strong work. The only ones I'm affected by it on list are UMiami and CWRU.

Should I just simply crossed them out of my "hope list" if you guys are already getting interview invites and I have not? One of my classmate and I both applied to UMiami, but neither him or I received anything from UMiami, not even a PASS Acknowledgement Receipt Card stating whether if our applications are complete or not?

Also, isn't UMiami PASS deadline on October 3rd and program deadline on October 15th? So doesn't that mean that UMiami haven't invited everyone that they want to invite yet because there are still applications and application materials rolling in until the deadline dates?

So, I bet some OMFS residency programs such as UMiami are doing the rolling admissions routine on their interview invitations! What do you guys think?

I know I lost my chance at CWRU because their PASS deadline is 8/19 and program deadline is 9/01. So if I haven't received an invite by now, I'm out as I am sure they have invited everyone that they feel the requirements were met.

One down, 19 lottery tickets to go! :thumbup:

Don't lose hope. SOme programs will send out late interview dates dependant on if ppl from the "first batch" cancel .

How much are the residents involved in the application process? Do you guys oversee the entire thing (down to acceptances), interview, or hang out to get a feel of a student?

Depends on the program entirely. Some programs may have residents look through applications (although most don't). Some will have chiefs or seniors in on the interview and will ask the rest who they liked and some won't ask any input. I would think for the most part, program directors and chairmen will select interviewees and will ask resident input when they make their rank lists.

As residents, we don't have a lot of say in who gets an interview, but we have a lot to say about rank order. We each make up a list seperately, and then we all tally up our lists. My list, as an intern, will count toward the final rank list just as much as each of our staff. It's a good system because it continues a trend of residents that get along well with each other. We spend the majority of the time with the interviewees, and we have a lot to say in the process. This is, I believe, unique to our program. The fact that a lot of the say comes from the residents was one of many reasons that I chose to rank my program so high.

When is Iowa offering interviews? I noticed that you there.

Iowa has not sent out invites, nor given us exact dates for the interview, but all signs point for the interview to be on a Saturday either late October or late November.

wow you guys got a lot of interviews already. I mostly applied to the northeastern programs and have not gotten anything yet. Do you mind posting a little info about yourself ex board score, GPA, or class rank...whatever you feel comfortable. I just want to see if it's just me or the programs I applied to haven't sent out invites yet.

The list is on going. I have not been given invites to all of these programs, nor did I apply to all of these programs. I don't think that you need to worry this early. There is still plenty of time.

I would be more worried that you didn't apply to the midwest and south programs. ;)

Unquestionably!!!! Though I have heard that many of the New York programs aren't incredibly competitive (I have heard many odd things from those who have interviewed-New York is...unique?), so in the end your chance should be reasonable with such a limited geography.

I WOULDN'T be worried about not applying to midwest and southern programs. I would agree that there are a handful of programs in the northeast that aren't the most competitive, HOWEVER, there are a good number of excellent programs in the northeast...to name a few: UConn, LIJ, Pitt. There are also quite a few programs in the midwest and south that I would consider undesirable and a good number that are some of the best training programs in the country.

I've heard good things from Pitt but I haven't heard anything stellar from OMFS who did externships at UCONN. They said there wasn't anything special or that it was mediocre for the most part (I know three people-one finished 2 years ago at Minnesota, one currently at LSU-Shreve, and one at USC). My buddy is chief at BU and it sounds okay but our second year interviewed there and said it was middle of the road compared to others where he'd externed and interviewed. Our chief and second year interviewed at a couple of Programs in NY and they both left during the middle of the interview and both said they'd rather do an intern year and apply again rather than go to NY. Who knows... just some points of view.

u are better off not ranking a crummy program just for the sake of hopefully matching... Do an internship year at a strong program, and that should help boost u into a better program.

hey i'm starting to worry too, but then again i'm at the bottom of the list i have a feeling i won't get an interview, here are my stats, anyone has an idea? nbd1 85, nbd2 82, dental gpa 3.1, one oms externship, currently gpr resident with a lot oms work. :scared:

It looks like we are all interviewing the same people! It is possible that the face of "ESCLAVO" might be revealed to many who pass this way. I await for perceptive individuals to discern my true identity in person. Here is one hint... my personal appearance is almost as appauling as my posts on SDN but not nearly as entertaining.

For those of you that are residence or have already interviewed. What types of questions are commonly asked during the interview? Or, what questions do you ask future coffee makers, dusters, troll care givers (i.e. interns)?

Do you like mild, medium, or hot salsa?
Are you a vegetarian?
Are you a democrat?
Can you show me a picture of your shoe shine box?
Do you stir the hot chocolate clock-wise or counter clock-wise or figure 8?
If an intern falls over in the middle of the night from exhaustion and no one is there, does he make a sound when he hits the floor?

The rest are surprises for the interview....... ;)

.......bastards. I was out of money and yet i had to somehow scrouge up the coin to make it to the interview, and of course didn't have any cash left for the nudie bars that night.

Oh and for all you interviewees out there.....dallas is made up of two things, steers and nudie bars......and i didn't see any horns at parkland!!!!

Everyone in the health professions is a 'geek'...while you may be bright, I'm sorry that socially your views are still framed by your own insecurities over immature high school notions of 'geeks' vs. the cool folks...

What clique do I fit, in? I wasn't even bright enough to notice it was alphabetized... I guess I know what group I fit in.... the ones that served the food in the lunch line and attended the "special classes".... but we had the best student/teacher ratio in the school and our bus could do a u-turn on a two lane highway...

You can pretty much plan on the residents asking you to go out the night after your interview. I would always stay the night after the interview for this reason--good face time with the residents. I used Priceline a ton for hotel reservations when I interviewed--stayed in four-star hotels for about $50/night. This didn't work everywhere, but give it a shot. That can just about get you two nights for the cost of one.

I also took the AMTRAK from New Orleans to Birmingham and from St. Louis to Kansas City. It was awesome. They had plugs for my laptop and iPod, and the seats were more like the first class plane seats. When cities are around four hours apart (driving time), you can take a train in about the same amount of time that it takes to go to the airport, go through the checkpoints, board, connect, get your luggage, etc. It sure is a lot more relaxing than travelling through an airport.

Pitt told me (last night) they were only sending information to those that they confirmed over the phone for an interview (12/9/05). KY's last interview is next week so I don't think they will be sending out any more info.

We've had 3-4 people not accept interviews (I assume because of conflicting interviews). I am looking to suggest a movement of our interview dates. Which conflicts are the most common and what dates would be appealing to you as applicants? We are a four year program. Do you think it would be better to move up our PASS deadline and interview earlier (currently Oct 15) or interview later? If you don't feel comfortable posting, pm me.

which program are you from? Just want to see if I applied to your program. Will you invite other ppl now because of the declines? if you don't want to reveal your secret identity, at least tell me what state your program is in. thx

November is way too crowded. I've had to decline 3-4 because of conflicts. I think there should be more in december, except dec. 5th (Part 2 boards). Loma Linda pulled that one. The secretary told me I needed to decide between boards and their interview. I told her I'd rather go to Esclavo's crappy residency than to theirs anyways :laugh:

I think the only thing wrong with October is that it is so far away from Match day. I think programs that interview in December have the advantage because you always remember the last few the best.

The positive thing about all of these residencies is that they'll train you so you can someday (if you match and then if you survive) stand before boards and possibly become a board certified OMFS. We won't tell you what you want to know before you ask specific questions. During your interview you have to be intelligent enough to ask the right questions to get your answers and then perceptive enough to see what is really there. I didn't apply to most of these programs when I went through the cycle, but I will tell you what I do know:

Alabama: Phenomenal program in all respects. The only downfall is living in Alabama (ONLY if you consider that a downfall). Birmingham is supposed to be a nice town, but not if you don't really want to be in the south.

Parkland: Speaks for itself as one of the nations best.

Michigan: I don't know too much about it. Nice name, but I heard they are kinda malignant. See for yourself.

Oregon: Big on cancer, solid program otherwise too.

Maryland: Residents were NOT happy there. Pretty malignant program. Do a lot, but not a happy place.

LSU-Shreveport: Supposed to be one of the best up and comming programs over the past few years. I believe they do a lot and cut a lot.

Louisville: Don't know too much about them, but they do a lot of tibial bone harvesting procedures under sedation.

Jacksonville: I have no idea.

You are interviewing at SOLID programs. Good luck.

Have I missed the point of this forum?? I would expect more from such an omniscient, exceptional scholar as yourself esclavo. I was unaware that there were actual OMS residents on this thing that could afford the time and mental effort to engage in such prepubescent retorts to an obviously unqualified, needy OMS applicant who has no independence and must always have his hand held :laugh: . Having your petty comments "spoon fed" to me is enough to make anyone sick. "Heaven help" health care when you are cut lose from your program...

I was in the same predicament. From the overall consensus of what I've heard about these programs, Oregon and LSU Shreve are very strong programs with UCONN not being the program it used to be. Much of the feedback I've received about UCONN has not been positive. Hope this helps...

I didn't interview at Oregon but I did at the other 2. I really liked UCONN. It's a really pretty part of the country. They sometimes don't fill their spots for some reason. I think it's because people tend to apply regionally and all the big-city yankees from that area go visit UCONN and are like "dude...where are we supposed to go clubbing dude?"

I love it. Just make me a promise that you won't change and automatically become humble when you walk into your residency. On your interviews ask this question of the attendings interviewing you, "can you tell me anything positive/negative about your program?"

When you walk into your first operation, look at your attending and ask, "can you tell me what I need to know to do this case?" Or when your first patient has a hypertensive crisis on the floor, ask your senior resident "can you tell me what I need to know about hypertension?"

You've demonstrated well what other applicants should know about the interview. Ask specific questions that demonstrate you've actually had some exposure to OMFS. This is where guys who have done externships and networked with residents on those externships will shine. Instead of a questions like "What kind of stuff do you do here?" Ask questions like "how many orthognathic cases are done here in a year and how many of those does the chief resident get to cut at least half the case?" Instead of asking "Do you pull alot of teeth in your clinic?" Ask questions like what percentage of your clinical procedures are done with a sedation/IV anesthetic. As some of you already know, the tough interviews are when the attending turns to you and says, "Interview me for the next 15-20 minutes". Then your lack of exposure, insight into the specialty will show. Organize what you think is important to you. Do your homework. Don't ask questions that can be easily answered if you would just google the program and read yourself on the internet. It is like those guys in dental school who go in and ask, "what is on the test?" Be the guy that looks at each class and determines what he wants to know.

I've always got time and energy to make a point using questions like Tigger's as an object lesson. His question was like a big fat underarm pitch down the center of the plate. It reminds me when I was an intern writing my first set of post op orders and I just flatly looked at my senior and said, "what do I write?" After I got ripped a new hole through which I could eat or poop, I never made that mistake again. Tigger is still grumbling thinking I have verbally abused him. I have done him wrong, I have hurt his feelings. He hasn't seen anything yet. I'm one of the nicer ones in this profession of OMFS.

Its funny the mentality that some of these dental students have. I guess the mere fact they are applying to omfs shows that they are top of the class and they have an attitude that goes with it. Even at interviews, many programs will be extremely nice to get new residents. BUT.. once the residency starts, then the game begins and theres no crying for mercy when the going gets tough. :meanie:

Shows me he hasn't been in a heated externship or that he applied to programs by looking at the little book. It is just a whole other world. I'm not worried about Tigger... he'll be fine. But I'm on the sun and he is on pluto... he is used to being the apex preditor in his dental class....I don't blame him for not understanding... it appears I am the first to rough him up a little. It is good for him to get a first taste of his future 6 years.... most who have enough exposure know exactly what I am talking about. It is hard going from almost done to the starting all over...new culture/customs/methods...starting all over...on the bottom...I was once there getting whipped....but if I would have pulled Tigger-attitude on my seniors or chiefs at my externships or in my program, they would have knocked my noggin back to dental school.

I didn't interview at Oregon, but I liked UCONN. They covered 3 hospitals...UCONN, Hartford hospital (trauma) and Children's. Good scope between trauma, orthognathic, pathology and dentoalveolar. Don't know how their cosmetic scope is though. You're not gonna get very much in the way of cosmetics in the Northeast without a fellowship, but it doesn't matter if you're not really into cosmetics. Anyway, attendings were nice and residents were good. Academically they were pretty strong in terms of journal clubs and resident presentations at rounds. You have to take the USMLE step 1 prior to starting the program though, so you basically start studying after match day. If you fail, I believe you can take it again after your intern year (good luck studying during that year). I know they have a strong private practice attending base, but I don't know how many full timers they have there at this point, I heard they lost a few. Either way, good program, at least a few years ago it was.
I don't know too much about Oregon. From what I have heard it is cancer heavy (although everyone says that about programs that do cancer i.e. Maryland, Michigan, Miami, Oregon...usually the fellow cuts half and the attending the other half, I don't even know if the chief really gets to do anything in terms of cancer prior to graduation without a fellowship). That aside, Oregon is supposed to be a solid program, but it would be better if people who interviewed there commented because I could be wrong.

Thought I might throw this out there. I'm trying to get as many opinions as possible for each program I'm interviewing at. Can anyone offer some feedback on Alabama, Parkland, Michigan, Oregon, Maryland, LSU Shreveport, Louisville, and Jacksonville?? All feedback, posivitve/negative, and details are appreciated. Here's the skinny on Maryland. I know this program very very well, so you'll have to trust me on this one. I'm not at Maryland now, but I have a lot of ties with them still.

When you interview with Dr. Ord, make sure you tell him that your biggest interests are in the area of oral cancer and that you are contemplating a fellowship in Head and Neck Cancer. If you went there you would then like to proceed to MARX's program in Miami for fellowship. They are good buddies and like to send eachother applicants. Those of us who know them can attest to this, because they never shut up about eachother.

As far as Dr. Coletti, he covers a lot of trauma and absolutely hates it. He's amazing at hit, but he hates it. Your party line should be that it just doesn't pay $$$ and isn't worth doing when you are in private practice. :D :D

A few more things... Maryland is not a malignant program that you hear about. Its practically country-club when you get there. No formal attending rounding except on Wednesdays. Trauma call is moderate. Implants galore. The dental school is a wonderful experience to have under your belt as well.... they love the 1st year residents.

I ranked them 2nd....

Probably Pitt. San Antonio is a great city to live in and the campus/hospital are nice. My last interaction with the program there was about three years ago. At that time they were having issues with resident salaries (not enough dough to go around, I think they were splitting 10 salaries for 12 residents or something), money for the department and attendings. The San Antonio medical school got in trouble for medicare fraud and was slapped with several million dollars in fines. The Health Science center as a whole decided that every school should help pay the medical school's fines; therefore, the dental school was being sucked dry, particularly the OMFS dept b/c they had the most revenue. They may have enough attendings now but I'm not sure what's going on with the money situation.

I have met at least one guy that wasn't all that happy at Pitt, for what it's worth. Maybe go to whichever interview is the cheapest for you to arrange.

I know 5 people have left the Pitt program over the past 2 years. From what I hear, it’s miserable there. I know that during my interview, they told me these guys left for family reasons. They put on a good show, though.

Five residents in the past two years is an almost 50% attrition rate, given the fact that they accept 2 residents a year

Yeah Maryland folks rock! The trail is interesting to say the least. My new favorite show is "Tool Time" with Tim the Tool Man Taylor (I know it is not a real show ;) )! Seriously though this stuff is pretty fun and there are some pretty cool ppl out there that I would love to be co-residents with. About the pros and cons... so true... the programs I thought were :thumbup: were not as :thumbup: and the ones I thought were not as strong were more strong ! I just hope one of them likes me :confused:

As for dinner at first i thought the night b4 for money reasons and staying another night. But the unwind afterwards is the best! That is when the other applicants self destruct! :meanie:

A program director I met who went there said he liked it... trauma heavy, med school issues, tons of DA. That is all I know. Hope it helps.

My interview at Pitt is coming up. Can anyone tell me something about it, since I’m trying to weed out a couple of interviews (it’s getting really expensive). I heard on the interview trail from several people that they try to fill their vacant spots by accepting residents from programs that close or by accepting their non-categorical interns….

I know that they accepted 4 residents from the St. Francis program when it closed. They also tried to get the LSU-NO people to fill all their empty spots. This is the only way they survive their resident shortage. When everything else fails, they accept their own dental students and make a “special 4 year tract” since they need to have 2 chiefs every year.
Another thing is that every year they try to get their non-categorical intern to accept a position out of match and ALL of them, with the exception of one, refused to stay and took their chances in Match. I heard their non-categorical intern from 2004-2005 hated the place so much that he left mid year to another program after a position was opened. So, I'd think very hard about it if I were you......

Really? I didn't interview there, but I never heard this reputation before. Why is it so bad?

They did take a 4 year guy to fill a spot but it's not like it happens every year. If you were a 1 year intern and a program offered you a categorical spot in their program you'd go too.

i thought it was a good program when i interviewed there. only thing is the way the program is structured your there 1st yr and u dissapear and basically come back 6th year and operate like crazy. they have ochs as chairman, and costello as program director. very nice people. they are very selective in who they invite for interview so u should take the opportunity to check the program out if u received an interview.

My friend from dental school just received an interview on King-Drew in LA. And he's debating on whether to go to the interview, despite having a few other good interviews. He asked me to find out a little more info on it, but I just don't know much aside form where I've externed and the program I'm in.

All I know about King-Drew is that its in a really really really really bad part of Los Angeles.

Anybody got any input?
King drew is the worst hospital that i've been to. its a lot worse than usc-lac, and charity in my opinion. located in very rough neighborhood in the south central. traditionally a very trauma heavy program. they just lost their trauma center so i imagine the only trauma they get are walk in mandibles?? their outpatient clinic used to be busy because they used to be walkins, but now everything is by appointment so less cases for extractions. not a very strong program in my opinion.

It seems every 6-12 months there's a scandal at King Drew that results in threats of permanent closure. I don't know if that's even possible, but the remote probability would scare me off.

I've been to that part of LA. I actually fit in quite well. The disturbing part was there was a couple thousand "esclavos" running around...hard to tell the imposters from the real thing..."will the real esclavo please stand up?"

I interviewed (somewhere else) with a dental student from there. He said the exam is just a "formality" the med school requires because it's the same test the med students take (for some reason). Apparently the OMFS faculty don't even see the results or care. But it does suck to spend a whole day taking a test.

I interviewed there last year and they do not make you take a test anymore, but it is still a malignant interview. They do not even ask the usual 'get to know you' questions. Every 20 min interview is a pimp session. Even the resident's pimp you. Overall, the program had some nice aspects to their scope, but I felt that the resident's were unhappy.

The art of "pimping" involves someone higher on the totem-pole belittling those lower on said totem-pole by asking questions they aren't really expected to know the answer to. It's a way for insecure faculty/residents to "establish" the pecking order over lower residents/students. Mostly done in med school, in my experience. But done correctly, it can be a useful teaching tool. But not many people do it correctly.

Example:

Faculty: "Toofache, who was the first surgeon to perform a complete gastric resection?"
Toofache: "Umm...what does this have to do with teeth?"
Faculty: "That kind of attitude and response won't get you a good evaluation on this med school rotation."
Toofache: "Umm....I've kind of already matched and stuff."

They filled one of their spots with the four year guy they accepted from their own school (the one you’re probably talking about), right now one of their 3rd year spots is empty and one of their 2nd or 1st year spots is also empty. I’m not sure which one. Just ask them about it when you go there or go to the aaoms website and look under open positions. I know for a fact that during the last two years they lost five residents, which would concern me. I’m not trying to put it down, just giving out the facts I’m aware of. I know that I would appreciate knowing the pros and cons if I was applying right now. Basically, don’t believe everything that you hear, do your research before choosing a program.

It sounds like you have an ax to grind. Your facts are not accurate and you are clearly trying to put that program down. It's obvious you don't know the real deal there, so I wouldn't clog things up with additional rhetorhic. I agree w/ UNLV ; he's got the experience of being there and it certainly hasn't been my experience that the residents are unhappy there. It's a great group of people and an excellent program. And yes....everyone should do their research.

My pimp session was kinda interesting.
I had an attending during my surgery clerkship who gives you a marking pen and tells you to write what you know about the procedure, anatomy, pathophysiology , and with drawings and after your done he will start pimping you on what you wrote and drew.

I'll be at Rochester. Honestly, don't know much about it but I really enjoyed visiting Strong Memorial when I was out there several years ago, a very solid medical center. Unfortunately, it is in Rochester which is in a pretty remote corner of the state.....

Has anyone heard from Miami yet? I know someone posted that they heard from Miami a while back, but my classmate who also had applied to Miami claimed that they haven't invited anyone yet according to the dept secretary (this was last week).

If you've already received an invitation from Miami, then can you please post the interview date(s) and method of the invite (email, phone, snailmail)?
