View Full Version : prior mental issues
biomajor 09-21-2005, 03:58 PM If anyone has any serious advice about this topic or could direct me to someone who could i would greatly appreachiate it.
i know that every person is differant but does anyone know of anyone who has been treated for any type of mental illness in their past and has later successfully completed a Carib. MD program. im not talking about the more serious illnesses like schizophrenia, but possibly the ones that are better controlled including Anxiety, OCD, dysthima, etc. Maybe someone out there knows of some of the resources the carib schools have if any to work with students like this
Im determine and will get my MD or DO eventually but i'd be kidding myself if i said i was not a bit nervous
thankyou very much
lvspro 09-21-2005, 05:34 PM I think half my class had add, 75% personality disorders, and virtually everyone was dysthymic, or had MDD.
btw, the above is an observation.
Fact: I knew at least 4 people with ADHD, 1 got on the honor club. 1 bipolar, and a few scattered MDD's. They all did fine. I think it depends on the way you approach your Dx. If you use it for excuses for yourself, then it gets tough to do well. If you use it as a motivation to study harder, and longer, then you'll be OK.
"It's more important to know what type of person has a disorder, than what disorder a person has." Osler
The above is one of the quotes they use on the home page every once in a while.

a la chris rock.
McGillGrad 09-22-2005, 11:43 AM Considering some of the people in medical schools, I imagine that minor psychological conditions are common.
If they are dealt with effectively, they are no different than any other obstacle to conquer.
skypilot 09-22-2005, 06:41 PM If you didn't have any mental problems when you started, you will have a few by the time you are finished.
a psychologist at my school said that near 3/4 of med students have some sort of psychiatric illness. He believed that the stress from school made them apparent.
Plus, you gotta be a litty nutty to put yourself into studying as much as you have to, to pay to work long hours and sometimes get yelled at, and then subject yourselves to 3+ years of rigorous post-grad training while making peanuts. Then to finally get out in the real world, where most people look at us as a way to get rich quick. Or take money from our pockets to make their bottom line look better.
ummm ok
erichaj 10-13-2005, 10:49 AM Stop labeling yourself.
Get over it.
Go to medical school.
You will do fine if you work hard.
Seek an education counselor (if you have not already). They will help you with ways to study that may help you be more efficient.
Good luck.

I have also wondered and thought about this topic, thanks for starting this thread. Its so supportive and encourageing to hear success stories esp when people have struggles to over come. WE CAN DO IT
erichaj 10-15-2005, 11:46 AM Well ok, lets look at the alternative.
Lock yourself in a room, feel insecure about yourself and feel that you have a
"Mental Problem".
Then, tell yourself that you won't make it, but try to make it anyway, then fail, and say to yourself " I knew I would not make it".
Self Prophecy.
Now, get angry at yourself that you tried in the first place and get more insecure and have more "Mental problems".
That's that circle people talk about.
If Tom Cruise says don't do the above. His right. By the way Tom Cruise is a millionare. Which one of you are millionares in here?
I'm not a huge fan of his, just responding to the post.
The point is, If you tell yourself your are Mental, you may become mental.
FOCUS ON THE THINGS YOU HAVE TO DO AND LEARN TO GET AHEAD.

This comment discredits your whole post.
What kind of person assigned value to someone's opinion based on their wealth?
erichaj 10-17-2005, 03:08 PM Well, Like I said I'm not a huge fan of his. But, Since you choose agrue the point:
Anyone who is capable of making that much money must know something you don't. that does not mean that he knows about medicine or psychology or anything relating to healthcare.
The fact is, your the one that brought his name into this.
anyway. you need to chill or get out more often. lol.
