Judge & Dr.BB,

Congratulations on your respective acceptances!

MSUCOM is an excellent school. Welcome to the program; I hope to see you around next fall, or during the summer if anatomy is again offered in July. By the way, if you value your leisure time, I would highly suggest the summer anatomy course. The end of your summer will be very intense, but the fall semester, sans anatomy, is freaking awesome!

Admittedly, I don't check SDN as often as I did during the application process, but feel free to post or PM me with any questions about MSUCOM; I will, albeit delayed, reply.

All the best,
-ky

I applied really early and was complete 7/21. I was notified of an interivew 9/7. Interviewed 9/19. Accepted 9/28 (officially).
I think it depends because I read on their website that you are scored and they interview based on that. I think I was in the second interview batch, but I am sure it helped that I am a MI resident. How long has it been since you were complete?

My timeline was very similar to Dr. BB's; i.e., I finished the secondary application in late July, interviewed in mid-late September, and received my letter of acceptance two weeks later, the first week of October.

Although in state residency is important to MSUCOM (typical class = < 10% non-residents) it seemed to have no influence on either my date of interview or acceptance; as I am a non-resident from that Red & White school over the lake and a short drive West.

I looked at my secodnary and primary essays, i read all of the interview questions supplied on SDN in the interview feedback section. Especially you should know the osteopathic philosophy, what it means to you, how you came to want to pursue osteopathic medicine, why you would like to be a physician. Also they might throw something out about a current healthcare problem so I would know something about the state of healthcare today (i.e. shortages, premium indigent, uninsurable, unemployed). Just be confident that you know why you want this and everything should be cool. You made it through the hard part now all you have to do is sell yourself to the school and show them that your both mature and confident you can make through four years of med school. I would also know how you plan to pay for school, what you like about MSUCOM, some history about osteopathy and MSUCOM history, finally I would make sure to ask questions when they ask if you have any. This shows a genuine interest in the school and in your education.

First and foremost,
CONGRATULATIONS on your acceptances. It is an extreme honor to have been accepted to any medical school in the US, and MSUCOM is an excellent school that has produced outstanding physicians.

I've heard a few questions in reading the posts and if you have anything to ask, please don't hesitate to PM me and ask anything from curriculum to housing.

From what I've heard, the summer anatomy course will be offered for the incoming class in 2006. I've heard rumblings from the Anatomy Profs and the Administration. Whether it is mandatory I have not heard, but stay tuned for information. Call the Admissions Office with any questions and you'll likely get more information than from me.
Also, from what I understand the incoming class will remain at 200 for a year or so. The next scheduled increase cannot occur until CHM relocates, which may happen at any time between tomorrow and next century (seriously, it's in the works and considering the difficulty and complexity it will be impressive).
If you are an out-of-state student, please hold your acceptance for a bit, if you can. The Non-Resident Scholarship is an excellent way to lower your costs, I speak from experience, and it will be offered around November (most likely). You likely won't have to commit to the school until you know your financial situation.

If you have any other questions, I check my PM Inbox every couple days. Best of luck to everyone and I hope to see you next year!

I'm not exactly "in the know", but when we met with the administrators last month Dr. Falls said they would be making summer anatomy mandatory. But, they also said that they hoped to allow a longer break before fall than we received (essentially two days with homework to do :(). But, don't hold me to this as it seems things are in a modification phase. To future students, do not be turned off by the number of changes being made. Everything is going great for us (2009) and we're the guinea pigs. The changes are excellent and they really seem to be listening to what we have to say about it.

Cool!
Sounds like marie337 has it down. Dr. Falls seems like a reliable guy.
I'll echo everything that marie337 has said, even though less has been different for me, as I am taking anatomy now, the administration is amazing here at MSUCOM.

Yeah, that one night transition they gave you from summer anatomy to fall orientation was ridiculous. Especially after the loss of your summer. At least things are easier now during the semester. :D

Just wait until you guys have him for anatomy.

Dr. Paganini showed a video of Dr. Falls from the summer, so much of the brachial plexus made more sense with Dr. Falls explaining it simply and functionally.
Drs. Paganini and Rechtien are very good, but sometimes I wish we had Dr. Falls for parts of the fall. :D

I actually preferred Dr. Rechtein (AKA Dr. Speedy) because his test questions were much better than those of Dr. Falls. Dr. Rechtein is very straightforward and clinic based because of his background. Dr. Falls is an anatomist so his questions focused much more on detailed anatomy. Plus, it's hard to fall asleep when Dr. Rechtein is speaking faster than you can process.

Very true about Rechtien, I have definitely enjoyed his style as a contrast to Paganini, who is an anatomist, and I imagine similar to Falls.
Also, Rechtien knows his stuff so cold that he just rattles it off, it's amazing. Like you said, "JR" is a fast talker and his little jokes are priceless.

Shaw,

you have to relax. I know you have a lot of questions, but don't stress yourself out. Trust me it will only make matters worse. You have gotten the hard part over with, now all you have to do is do well in your interview. The latter shouldn't be hard if your confident and have answered the questions I pinpointed for you. To answer your questions I believe everybody receives those pages to sign. Take one step at a time and you'll be cool. Good luck, like I said you can pm me anytime

Nope, I figured I would wait as long as possible until I had to spend the $500 dollars. I know its due before or on Dec 15th , so I still have some time. It's just hard for me to concentrate on my studies right now, because I have my acceptance. I guess i'm just happy to know i'll be in East Lansing thins summer, but bummed that I still have to take classes in this term and next. ______________________________________________

I am taking two classes now (after having dropped one that I knew I wasnt going to concentrate on it). I have decided not to waste money, as an out-of state student, and not take classes this spring. I am just going to work and apartment hunt. I need a car, so I will be saving up for that.
I am really excited about the summer. ~B

I didn't take anything with me to either of my interviews (note; i interviewed once in february and again in sept.) The day is very simple and short so don't worry about anything. Your interviewer will have a copy of your essay and they will give you a folder with all of the information that you will need.

so just relax and enjoy the day. Both of the interviewers I had were very relaxed and interesting people. Just sit back and enjoy the conversation.

Good luck.

if someone gets into msucom does that person have to finish up his/her bachelor's degree or is it ok to get in with let's say 109 credits done. can they reject you after you have been accepted because you didn't get a bachelor's.

Dr.BBasket
11-17-2005, 01:54 PM
The website says:

"Completion of at least 90 semester or 135 term credits in an accredited college or university. Completion of eight semester or 12 term credits, including lecture and laboratory, with all grades at 2.0 or higher, in each of the following blah, bla, blah."

But, I would call for clarification.

i want to understand this. the first two years we are at msu taking classes on campus. the next two years we do our clerkship at a hospital that we choose in the statewide campus system .while in our last two years doing the clerkship where are we going to live. on campus at msu? at our house if it is close by? and also the same hospitals we do our clerkship are those the same hospitals we do our residencies?

during the first two years you will live in the Lansing area. I don't recommend living on campus though, It sucks. Living in Owen Hall is aweful, the rooms are small and you barely live in a closet. For the clerkship phase you will move to where the hospital is and live there. You may be able to do your residency at the hospital you are at but there is obviously no guarantee.

I am sure it doing your clerkship there probably will help you in getting a residency there.

can some of you guys tell me what time (specific) the admissions office called you in the morning or afternoon or whatever to let you know if you have been accepted or not and also does the admissions office mainly call notifying of acceptances and declines on wednesday, and thursday of the week?

They called me (the first time) on Wednesday afternoon, around 3:30pm. Tamara must have called me right after they finished meeting. She called again on Thursday morning. I interviewed on Sept 19th and found out Sept 28 (ok Sept 29th). I was nervous waiting because I didnt know if I had went in the batch for the Wednesday after my interview or what. Be patient. You'll probably get a call today-- Good luck!!!

Tamara called me and I missed the call on Wednesday. I called her back the next morning, and she wasnt there, and she called me back. She asked how my interview went and told me my interviewer recommended for entrance and the admissions committee agreed.

Shawmahmed, you really need to chill out. I am reading your posts and have the image that you're some insanely jittery and overstressed pre-med. I live in East Lansing and have talked with several COM students who were accepted from the waitlist throughout the spring semester and into the summer. Being waitlisted simply means that they are keeping you around and will review your file each wednesday meeting and decide whether or not to grant you a seat in the next class. Ultimately, they just want to review some of the upcoming applicants first before giving you an offer. I think they take rougly half of the ppl from the waitlist. Its much better than being rejected, I can tell you that. I honestly wouldnt get yourself worked up over this. You are through the hard part and now all you have to do is sit back and wait. Its out of your hands, and worrying or constantly checking this board isnt goning to do anything but make you more excited than you already are. Go have a beer or something, its not the end of the world. Since your questions are very brief and peripherally related to MSUCOM 2010, would you mind just PMing me your questions to save board space? Thanks

I have to agree, having been waitlisted for the 2009 class and then accepted into the 2010 class, just relax and have some fun.

by the time you get into medical school you will have all of the stress that you want.

did you apply to any of the other osteopathic schools?

I just got accepted yesterday. It was everything I hoped it would be, and a little bit more since MSU beat GT last night. I interviewed on the 21st, and the ADCOM will review your file the following wednesday. (They were one week late for me due to the holidays) And I am pretty sure that they will call you regardless of the decision.

IT's still really early in the interviewing season. A lot of students get off of the waitlist at MSUCOM. Getting into medical school was one of the most stressful events of my life. I am now an MSII at MSUCOM and I was waitlisted, and it wasn't until after May 15th that they called and offered me a spot.

Hello New Admits!!
I've been waiting on the new wave of people and I am excited that we will be classmates this summer! It is really nice to not have to worry night and day about whether I am going to go to med school.
About housing--I am slowly looking into housing for this summer. If anyone comes across nice aprtment close to campus. please post on the board.

Shawnmed--I feel you. I am poor as well, and from Detroit, so I understand your comment. Just hold in there and stay positive and in a few weeks, submit a letter explaning your continued interest. They want to see how much you want this, but stay cool in the meantime. Stressing wont help.

Congratulations to all who were recently accepted. I looked on MSUCOM website and saw that they have dorms, off campus housing, and co-op housing. Although that co-op housing seemed a little weird (I just haven't heard of it before). I will probably start looking for housing around January or February just to see if any vacancies will be available for the summer. Take care

hey guys jessie from farmington hills, i am new to this forum, i just got on the f***** alternate list at msucom, anybody know the f***** stats of how many getting in out of how many are alternate listed.

can someone confirm this for me. msucom will take approximately 205 students this year. i found out that 66 interviews will take place between now and may. it says on their website that the class is 90% filled by mid-december so 90% times 205 equals around 184 so around 184 seats will be filled up by mid-december. this leaves 21 seats for alternates so whoever is alternate listed from those 66 interviews from now until may will compete for approximately 21 seats. lets say 50 of these people are alternate listed and 16 are declined. so at least 50 people are going to compete for the last 20 seats. does this sound right? and also is there a waitlist rank?

Keep in mind that some of the people MSUCOM has accepted are being waitlisted at other schools that they would prefer to attend. When I applied, there was some deadline in May when allopathic schools did not allow students to hold acceptances at multiple schools. After this date, the waitlist starts to move pretty fast.

Good Luck!

Having already received one degree from state, I think that I can comment on the housing situation in East Lansing

I am currently living in kzoo and will be looking for a place to live in march or april.

I personally hesitating about living near campus and the reason is the trains.

there are train tracks that run right through campus and a train runs through about once every twenty minutes, and if you want to wake up in the middle of the night to a train whistle, then yes I definitely endorse getting an apartment adjacent to campus over on Hagadorn. Most of these apartments are in great proximity to campus, as in across the street, but the price you pay is insomnia.

There is the upper tier, which opened my last year at state, I am not familiar with the set up of the apartments but you live with three other people and have to drive 10 to 15 minutes to get to Fee Hall.

There is always the student ghetto between grand river and burcham. I am thinking about going in on a house in this area, but be warned, there are plenty of undergraduates and house parties, so once again you will wake up in the middle of the night to rock music down the street.

On campus housing and apartments; DON'T DO IT! especially Owen Graduate Center. unless you are monk and like living in a closet and sleeping standing up, then I fully endorse this option also. Also, the on campus cable SUCKS. You probably won't get much opportunity to enjoy it, but they options are limited.

If you are interested the university will give you free housing to live on one of the research farms between service road and I-96. the price you pay for this is taking care of sheep and mules at three in the morning while they give birth. so unless you are have a degree in animal science I would not endorse this option either.

You can always see what options exist in Okemos, Williamston, mason, and Holt also.

PM me for further questions or post them on here\

Also I am looking for a roommate/roommates next year

Hi guys! I was accepted to MSU via email last week. I am SO excited!!!! :) I graduated from MSU last spring and do research on campus now. Just wanted to throw my 2 pennies in on housing...I live in an apartment west of lasning (almost in Grand Ledge). Rent is SO much cheaper here and campus is only a 10-15 min drive from campus, plus no street lights on the way. Bottem line--the farther from East Lansing you go, the cheaper (and quieter) housing is.

How much cheaper?

I used to live in the Northern Tier in a 1 bed/1 bath for around between 8-850 a month (it included cable and internet but not ConsumersE). To be fair, the Northern Tier is probably one of the most expensive places to live in E. lansing--espeically if you just have a 1 bedroom. I live in a 1bed/1bath now that's just as nice (and larger) for $499 (i pay for all utilities here but it's still at least $250 a month cheaper). There's no issue with guest parking out here like they had in the northern tier when I lived there--this could have changed though since it's been a few years since I lived there.

A lot of my classmates matched up w/ roommates using the link that judgehopkins posted. If you want to live alone and are willing to shop around for apts for a bit, you can definitely afford to do so on loan money (I spend 499/mo + util and live alone)

btw, hopefully you'll be getting a list of apartment recommendations from the class of 09 soon, I know the class president is working on it right now.

hi future classmates! i finally took the time to register so that i could post threads instead of just reading yours.

anyway . . . i just started looking for apartments the last couple of days. from what i hear from other people, living away from east lansing is the best because it's cheaper and more quiet.
i looked on rent.com, and they have a lot of apartments listed in the area. i'm going to visit a few next week.
personally, i'm planning on living by myself. i got pretty much every experience there was during my undergrad (dorms, sorority house, apartments with roommates). who knows . . . i might hate it, but i'm going to try it out while i'm living on loans!

has anyone gotten any info about specific orientation dates or deadlines for tuition due? let me know because i haven't heard anything.

talk to you all soon!

Yeah, it's about 700/mo -- I got lucky this semester and didn't quite spend all my loan money from the Fall (so I went to the mall...)

btw, when planning your expenses I'd 100% recommend high speed Internet -- you'll want it for downloading lectures, etc.

Working construction in upstate New York  until April, then putting my brain back in and dusting off the old bookshelf... Oh, and for the record everthing is cheaper in Lansing, taxes, rent etc. I pay 500 a month for an exquisite house in Lansing (5 bedroom) for the mortgage! as opposed to the 420 I was paying for a basement apartment-o-death in East Lansing. And im starting to get light headed thinking about going back to school while so many others of you speak of research projects and lab works, Im concerned with booming 4 tons of steel into a valence so I can automate some conveyor. I just found the MSUCOM match results website last night. Here it it: http://www.do-online.osteotech.org/index.cfm?PageID=sir_match06main

You can get exact MSUCOM numbers here: http://www.natmatch.com/aoairp/ . Click "Results" on the left. Then look at "Statistics: Summary by college".

I was looking for specific residencies more... anyways you in Indy for the Big Ten Tournament? Are you already a full Sparty or are you still cheering on the Maize and Blue ?

I hope you'll all enjoy it here as much as I do. The opportunities are limitless at this College, just grab and hold on for the ride. :D

I don't really visit these parts of the forums that often, but I check SDN every so often. Shoot me a PM if you like for a question.

BTW - When you get here in the summer start looking up the Friendship Clinic (http://studentdoctor.com.msu.edu/Friendship/) to get some amazing patient contact. It looks like we'll be expanding the days of operation to every weekend, or at least I'll be pushing for that. The prior Coordinator said that the few students last summer did really well.
Hopefully the site will be updated soon! ;)

Should this be a great concern for us now? If so, I wass unaware first years get patient contact at all! anyway more information on the subject would be helpful.

I was just wondering if anybody had any idea of when we are going to hear anything from the financial aid people. I am getting this feeling like I should be doing something now after getting all that FAFSA stuff turned in two months ago. If somebody could let me know if I’m missing something I’d really appreciate it.

Dreamless,

As a first year you do get some patient contact, but most of it is self-initiated. As part of your Fall semester Doctor-Patient Relationships class, you'll do 3 taped interviews (gather history info, etc) with standardized patients who are hired by MSU. In the Spring of first year, we just did Physicals for the Area 8 Special Olympics, which was good pt contact.

You can also volunteer at the Friendship Clinic starting in the Fall, though I don't know the details. In January, I went to several health screenings put on by MSUCOM and we did blood pressures/glucose/cholesterol checks for ~70 people in the community. Opportunities like that come up every couple months or so.

You can also sign up for electives as a first year to get involved either by shadowing a doc, volunteering at Cristo Rey/Friendship Clinic, etc. Near the end of 1st year, you can also put your name in the hat to work in the free OMM clinic. Anyway, there are some patient encounters for first years if you're interested.

As far as thinking about internships, matches, etc, it's never too early to start thinking about them; I wouldn't be terribly concerned about them yet however. Do keep in mind that by the end of your first year, it's already time to pick your base hospital.

hope some of this was helpful, pm me if I can help w/ other questions or clarify.

Okay, so I thought that since I'd posted info regarding the clinic, I should take it upon myself to update you guys (still hoping you're interested :D ).
The clinic will remain operating on a two weekends per month schedule, as it has in the past. There will be regular updates letting everyone know when these are. Unfortunately, my e-board has decided to reserve the summer dates for second years as incoming students as a whole don't have clinical skills and won't be able to participate to any great degree. However, once the semester starts, look us up to hone your clinical and doctor-patient skills.
There will be several outreach programs in the community this year, such as health screenings (bp, cholesterol, glucose, ophtho/glaucoma, etc.) so watch for those!
Once again, CONGRATS to all the future physicians of America and welcome to MSU! :D

Overall, it was ok. It was kind of hard to tell who was an incoming student, and who was an aspiring incoming student. I did get to meet some students though.

The orientation seems to be pretty in depth for a 3 day event (If I'm not mistaken). Just looking at the lineup has persuaded me to stop partying completely and memmorize my Anatomy book cover to cover. I was wondering though since the bills are due for the summer already... Even though I posted and agreed and accepted the financial aid it hasnt shown up on my bill as of yet. I have also never had financial aid before anyone know how this is supposed to work?

I agree that it is weird that our financial aid is not being applied to our bill

Hey Dreamless,

go to the msu financial aid site and then go to the med student info link.

there is a link for US06 COM admit page. I found this statement on the page.

You will receive your MSU registration bill via email in April for summer 2006 and your payment is due May 3rd (these dates may vary depending on when you enrolled for class). Any financial aid that is “ready” when the bill is processed will appear on the bill either as actual aid or a temporary credit and reduce the amount you owe. Note: if your aid is awarded after the registration bill is processed you can contact the Office of Financial Aid to have aid applied to the bill online.

Just wondering kind of had me a little worried. I didn't get a chance to call the finaid office today, but I will try tomorrow for sure. Just wondering if anybody else is a\ having a similar experience?

Hi Coach,

thank you very much for the offer and your warm welcome :)
I just recieved an email from fin aid regarding my 06-07 aid and I am a little confused. On efinaid for 06-07 it showes fall and spring as 2 separate amounts and I guess I don't have any aid/loans for summer. But when you look at finaid spread sheet with costs for tuition, housing etc, fall/sping are combined and summer is a separate semester. I guess my question is whether my summer finaid will show later or may be the fall/spring aid that I have on my account is all I get for 06-07 year?

Thanks again,

I think it's pretty hard to pass the waiver exams... I wasn't strong in either Genetics (did take in ugrad) or Biochem (never took), so I didn't take them. Hopefully someone who did try them can give you more info, but I wouldn't take them unless you're very experienced in those classes.

I just remember what a horrific nightmare that entire exercise was. especially considering that I did it two years in a row. And then thinking about all of the money that I threw at applying over the last two years makes me sick. good question...anyone?

Nearly all first year lectures are recorded using Camtasia -- the instructor uses a tablet pc to project to the overhead (usually using powerpoint), and the audio and the overhead projections with notes are recorded into a file -- so essentially you have audio and video. The only thing you don't get is to actually see the instructor.

OMM lectures aren't recorded, but that's one of the very few exceptions for first yr classes. Camtasia is awesome and I use it almost daily to review lectures or to listen to ones I skipped.

There's no schedule for this coming fall lying around, is there? I looked on the COM website and didn't see one, but I was wondering if I had missed it. My family is planning on taking a trip during my winter break, and I need to figure out flight reservations ASAP. Let me know if you guys have seen anything. Thanks.

On the Academic Programs site there is a link to "Key Dates" on the far left corner. Click that and it gives some key dates. Also, you can get an approximation of dates based on last year's schedule. It's always tricky to try to get dates for breaks from MSUCOM - I had problems with that trying to plan a wedding over a year in advance.

hope you guys are enjoying your last weeks off

Also living at Berrytree for the summer, and possibly for the next academic year as well (meeting potential CHM roommate tomorrow for lunch). Moving into sublet this Saturday, then home for a day, then back to EL for good on Monday.

As for what I'm doing now...working out and reading...a lot. But don't worry, the reading is completely unrelated to med school ;)

Looking forward to meeting you guys soon...peace.

i second that. i think we are all freakin' out. i at least have some comfort in knowing that a couple of my friends are also starting at COM this year. yay! however, we don't all get the same emails. we forward every one we get to each other so we don't miss out on anything. i never got the one about biosketch. anyone else having the same problem?

Not sure if youguys know this information. But I was wondering if MSU is still doing acceptances. I have a student waiting and wondering and has not heard a thing from MSU. Can anyone give me the heads up?

I came off the waitlist at MCW just yesterday and today I called MSUCOM to decline my spot. So, there is at least one spot open as of now. Someone is going is to receive some very good news soon :)

I freak out...sometimes, but I strive to keep it to the ultimate min. because seriously, i dont retain info when I am stressing. And I am sure as heck not going to stress before I have my first lecture, LOL.

hey- i am here on campus already and there is construction going on, that consists of yeah- dirt roads.
nanya- i will co-sign on your comment about not doing dirt roads. but i will just wear some sturdy sandals.

i loving all the conversation going on the thread. it was hella quiet before!

I don't know how I was thinking I was going to start getting ready for orientation. I just know that I am not in the school mood after all this time off.

Dr.BBasket, I am guessing (for some reason) you are not a girl..you may actially in fact be a guy...I apologize if I am wrong..so sturdy sandals would probably work for you.. :)
but some of us here are girls...like myself...so to hear that I would have to wear sturdy sandals for orientation is ..well..not be best case scenario...especially for girly girls...
so I think I will disregard the warning and go for something more feminine.. ;)

LOLLOLOLOLO I am a woman, and as girly girl as they come! I cant wait to meet you so we can have a good laugh about this one! I cant wait til I tell my friends!!!
I said sturdy sandals as opposed to sandals with high heels- like low sandals.

wow- i thought the "sunshine and clouds, la la la" would have been a giveaway. ~Brandi

now that I think about it espcially the "la la la" should have given me a clue..
I am blaming my lack of intuition on the stress of what's coming..MS1 :D

Man, seeing all you girly-girls deal with cadavers in anatomy lab is going to be pretty entertaining. Although maybe I shouldn't talk, I guess I have no idea how I'm going to react to all that stuff either.

Out of curiosity, how old are you people? I'm 22.
